The first few times I tried shopping, I made the obligatory trips to the famous malls — Dubai Mall, MoE, and even smaller ones — you name it. However, this quickly turned into a discouraging experience. As I previously lived in Morocco and Europe where outdoor walking is actually the norm, I have never been a fan of malls; I prefer to get in, get what I need, and get out without wasting time. You can look for international certifications like B-Corp, Carbon neutral, Plastic neutral, 1% for the planet. They may not be perfect, but they are all based on criteria which are audited on regular basis.

Moreover, one of the more recent developments we’ve begun participating in is utilizing seawool-crafted garments. 

But what is seawool, you ask? Well, after nearly a decade of testing, engineers figured out a way to turn trash into treasure. Simply put, this vegan wool alternative is a mixture of ethically sourced oyster shell composites and recycled plastic bottles. Both are pulverized into a fine powder and then transformed into yarn. (Pretty cool, right?)

According to an article from WWD, this hybrid fabric is as soft as cashmere and has an almost identical makeup to standard wool. Additionally, it’s antibacterial, anti-static, odorless, and insulating (yet still breathable). What’s more: it even provides UV protection and is wrinkle resistant.

Further, The Beet. reports that one sweater contains around five oyster shells and eight post-consumer plastic bottles. So, by putting upcycled and recycled waste to use, seawool leaves behind a significantly smaller carbon footprint than traditionally manufactured wool.

That said, there’s a tasteful and tacky way of donning a retro ‘fit. Leaning too far into the concept can come off costume-y, so be cautious of the way your pieces come together. But otherwise, it’s easy-breezy to assemble an effortlessly cool ensemble.

STRIPES

Stripes have had their moment in every decade of style but tend to show up differently for each. Rather than wearing the polished, nautical take on the horizontal pattern, we’d suggest stripes of earthy faded hues. Now that we have sorted out the t-shirts in our previous article, let’s continue with the most important piece of a casual chic attire, the dress shirt. In this article, we will provide you some tips to chose the best fit for your body!

Custom-made shirts

Custom made shirts are a good option in cities where tailors are not so expensive, like Dubai or Singapore. They usually provide the perfect fit for your body and allow customization to a certain extent.

However, they can also come with some disadvantages: The hassle of going back and forth to the tailor to try the shirt is often a no go for the modern online consumer.

Moreover, the choice of fabric is often focused on formal shirts. Going for ready-made gives you access to much more creative choices.

Fit

There are two main types of fit: Regular and Slim. Many brands will propose their own version of “adjusted fit”, but it will most probably fall between the two types above. You will also find Loose Fit, but this is ultimately just a larger Regular fit.

A perfect fitting shirt needs to flatter your body shape, while allowing a certain degree of freedom in your movement.

Let’s make it simple: if you are 2 and 3, go for regular fit. If you are 4 and 5, go for slim fit, or chose your regular fit with care (see below). If you are 1, well you are lucky, you can go for both: Slim for a sharper look, Regular for a more casual, relaxed look.

Some Important details to check before buying

• Collar/Neck space: You should be able to put 2 fingers between your neck and the collar when buttoned up. Otherwise, you will have difficulty breathing and moving your head.

• Shoulders: Same as T-Shirts, the shoulder seams should fall at the edge of your shoulder bone, not lower not higher.
• Sleeve Fit: Like in the picture below, not too tight, not too loose. Especially for muscular arms, too tight does not look casual chic!

• Sleeve Length: The trick is to put your arm alongside your body and to measure about 2cm above the base of your thumb.

• Shirt length: Formal shirts that are aimed to always be worn inside the pants should be long enough to allow about 15 cm below the belt. For other shirts that you may wear outside the pants or inside them for a smarter casual look, allow a length of about 8 cm below the belt. It is not an exact science; you just need to make sure we don’t see your skin when you make reasonable movements.

If you live in a hot climate country like UAE, T-Shirts will represent a large part of your wardrobe, so you better get it right! Here are a few tips on what to look out for before you buy a T-Shirt.

Colour

You have probably already discovered it by yourself, but it never hurts to remind it. Light colours reflect the sunlight whereas dark colours absorb it. Go for lighter colors during the day, and keep dark colors for evenings.

Materials

If you want your T-Shirt to be durable, the safest choice is to go for 100% cotton, with ideally a label certifying it, like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) or Okeo Tex. You will do your bit for the planet as cotton is a natural, biodegradable material or get even extra points by opting for recycled cotton.
By all means, we suggest avoiding cheap T-Shirts in famous fast fashion stores, as they will lose their shape after a few washes.

Fit

The shoulder seams should fall on the edge of your shoulder bone. if they are lower, the T-Shirt is too big and vice-versa. Similar rule applies to sleeves. They need to be about halfway your upper arm. If they are longer/shorter, the t-shirt is too big/small respectively.

The length of the T-Shirt should be aligned with your waist plus 5-10 centimeters, so we don’t see your belly when you raise your arms.

The fit of the T-Shirt will depend on your body shape but the rule of thumb is not too tight and not too large. If you have a muscular body you can go with confidence for a slightly slimmer cut; if you have a bit of extra weight, choose a looser cut.

An exception to all the guidelines above is the oversized t-shirt look which does not really apply for a casual chic attire.

Neck

The round (or crew) collar is the most classic neck type and suits everyone, in particular if you have a long neck and narrow face, or if you have a sporty build. It will keep your silhouette balanced.

The V neck is less formal and more original. It is particularly good for shorter people as it lenghtens the body. 

How to style your T-shirt

The classic way is to pair a light T-Shirt with darker bottom, like a pair of jeans or navy/kaki pants. Similarly, darker tones of T-Shirts can be combined with light beige or grey pants for instance.

Try to avoid using the same tones for top and bottom, unless you already master the art of matching:)

This commercial initiative originally coming from the US as part of the Thanksgiving celebrations has then seen the world jumping on this golden opportunity. From an eco-conscious perspective, the debate is open. Are those super aggressive promotions pushing people to consume more? And especially more of what they don't need? Should every business run a Black Friday sale?

• Consumers tend to over purchase as they are motivated by hefty discounts. However, the original prices are often inflated before Black Friday so the discounted amount looks amazing while in fact the seller's margins are not much impacted. What is the point for the end consumer then?

With those elements in mind we can start wondering if we can effectively enjoy Black Friday discounts while mitigating some of its effects on the planet.

One idea to be an eco-responsible consumer during those tempting times would be to have a very precise idea of what you really need to buy. We recommend putting it on paper so that there is less room to deviate. Another, could be to ensure the brand you purchase the item from is making efforts to reduce its carbon footprint (by using recycled materials, giving back to the planet etc.)

Most of the mass-produced wrapping papers you find in stores are not recyclable due to the glossy coatings, films and colors, and therefore ends up in landfills.

But what is it exactly, and what are its impacts on the environment?

An innovative shipping method with Limits

In order to serve their customer base locally, major online retailers rely on stocks that they acquire from wholesalers around the world a few times per year as big orders. Stocks are stored in their local warehouses and fulfilment centers.

This way, the retailer has a better control on his margin, packaging, service and image since he plays the role of an intermediary between the brands and the end consumer. The major drawback is that it is quite costly since the retailer needs to buy large amount of stocks in advance, with a significant risk of not selling everything.

When huge players like Alibaba entered the game, dropshipping has become very popular. Through this shipping method, dropshippers simply display products for end consumers, and when an order is triggered, the supplier ships this specific product directly to the consumer.

This method is more adapted to cheap commodities, but has also been extended to fashion products. While the main advantage of this method is the riddance of stock, it has several downsides, like a low barrier on entry which involves lower diversification and cheaper products, but most importantly poor client service since shipments can take weeks, stay blocked at customs and sometimes be lost in transit. Not to mention return and exchange management which is far from exemplary due to timelines and logistics complexities. 

A significant impact on the environment

This method has without doubt the worst impact on the environment since each products are shipped one by one from any country around the world.

Let’s take a simple use case. A retailer buys a stock of 100 shirts and get them delivered from country A to country B by plane. The simplified flow to get 100 T shirts delivered to consumers is:

Country A Supplier Warehouse x1 -> Country A Airport x1 -> Country B Airport x1 -> Country B Warehouse x1 -> Country B delivery to customers x100.

Now imagine the same thing using Dropshipping. For 100 T shirts bought by customers online, the flow is the following:

Country A Supplier Warehouse x100 -> Country A Airport x100 -> Country B Airport x100 -> Country B Shipper Warehouse x100 -> Country B delivery to customers x100.

Obviously each flight does not transport only one T Shirt (thank God!) but you can easily understand how dropshipping carbon footprint since there are billions of consumers around the world.

So what can I do?

Switching our consumption to better quality and durable products will allow consumers to buy less and enjoy more. Buying from retailers already available in your country is the way to go to avoid uncertainties on service and delivery timelines, while diminishing consumption impact on the planet.

Finally, choosing brands which promote a conscious and eco-friendly fashion model will motivate more and more fashion actors to act responsibly, beyond bold statements in newspapers.
