"...I love the Grateful Dead’s music. It’s true. I didn’t always, though. After I began playing and singing with Phil Lesh, I started to appreciate it more. Over time, it grew on me and I began to love it...Having professed my love for their music, I must say that I’m a tad annoyed at the fact that sometimes all people want to hear is Sugaree. I love that song. Sure, yeah. You got me. But really, I can sing other stuff, too. I like the Beatles as much as the Dead. Probably more. I like the Velvet Underground, Tom Waits and Merle Haggard just as much too. And believe or not, I even like singing some of my own songs. In fact, that’s why I’m here to begin with. I refuse to be reduced to a Grateful Dead cover band, and if that means never singing Sugaree again…so be it. There will be a time in the not-too-distant future, when Dead songs will show up in our set as a rarity. Not a regularity..."

1973 was a turning point for the Grateful Dead. Only a few months after the death of PigPen McKernan, the Dead began work on their first studio album since 1970's commercial breakthrough, American Beauty. They'd left Warner Bros., started two record labels (Round & Grateful Dead Records), opened their ranks to outside players (Keith & Donna Godchaux) and began recording what would become the exquisitely wonderful Wake Of The Flood. Three years between studio albums was an eternity in the early 70s and the band's growth was immediately evident, displaying a new found depth in their writing and playing - as evidenced by the ambitious 'Weather Report Suite' and the simply gorgeous 'Stella Blue.' Having worked much of this material out on the road before recording, it's no surprise these studio outtakes sound nearly as finished as the finished LP. You'll hear tapes spooling, count-offs, cut-offs and miscues... and some beautifully articulated music. These tapes are well known in Dead trading circles, but should be appreciated by anybody interested in the early development of what many still consider to be the greatest rock band America ever produced."

"When Jerry Garcia's band abandoned acid-frazzled psych-rock for close harmonies and pastoral folk, they created a classic roots sound that continues to influence bands today...Somewhere along the rock'n'roll timeline an imaginary barricade was built between rock fans and Deadheads. Liking the Dead became taboo. Personally, I never understood this crazed reaction, but it was probably to do with their fans. Grateful Dead were one of the first bands to establish themselves as a cult, with a large dedicated following showing up at every gig. While the Dead seemed to lock into their summer ‘73 vibe early in June at RFK stadium, the three show run at Universal City, CA holds a special place in my heart, even while for most people, it lives well in the shadows.
