One of my favorite Grateful Dead books. It doesn't go out of its way to glorify them or smooth over the rough spots, but its not trashy, either..."insider" enough to be interesting but not obnoxious. From Library Journal:

In a release, the society said that the exhibition, to be called “The Grateful Dead: Now Playing at the New-York Historical Society,” would feature artwork, posters, marionettes and other stage props as well as banners and decorated fan mail from throughout the band’s 30-year career. Prior to its opening, the society will hold a fundraising event that will be attended by the Grateful Dead members Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, where items from the Grateful Dead Archive at the University of California, Santa Cruz, will be previewed..."

I don't remember where I picked up this one but it is an odd little book. There is really no trace to be found anywhere of the book's publisher, Moonbow Press...Sadly, there is some info available on the books author, Robert Nichols...this is from the April 12, 1997 edition of the NY Times: "A 58-year-old man found dead under a purple shroud in his trailer home in Northern California left behind a suicide note suggesting that he hoped to join members of the Heaven's Gate cult on a space ship in the trail of the Hale-Bopp comet.

Sheriff's deputies said today that they knew of no other link between the man, Robert L. Nichols, and the 39 cult members who committed mass suicide last week in the affluent San Diego suburb of Rancho Santa Fe.

Mr. Nichols, whose body was found early Monday, worked as the caretaker of a piece of land in a remote area of Yuba County. Family members said Mr. Nichols was mostly known as a devout fan of the Grateful Dead, and had written a book about one of the rock-and-roll band's more famous road trips, ''Truckin' With the Grateful Dead to Egypt...''" Lost Live Dead: Keith and Donna Band, Tour History 1975

"Keith and Donna Godchaux led their own band for about 8 months in 1975, while the Grateful Dead were on hiatus. The duo recorded an album that was released on Round Records in March 1975. Keith and Donna played intermittently around Bay Area clubs, and then did one tour of the Northeast. Keith and Donna then joined the Jerry Garcia Band in early 1976, bringing their time as bandleaders to a close until after they left the Dead.

The Keith and Donna Band was apparently a somewhat ragged group at the beginning, but I did see them at the end of their tenure, and they were pretty good. Not earthshaking, but way better than the average bar band. At the time, there was both an understandable if unfair comparison to the Garcia/Saunders group and Kingfish, and also some unreasonable hostility towards Keith and Donna. It seemed to be a fate of Dead keyboard players to be unpopular with many folks until after they had departed, so Keith's performances were complained about endlessly, and I felt irrationally, while he was in the band. Once Brent Mydland joined the band, Keith was revered, a process that seemed to repeat itself with Vince Welnick. As for Donna, she had monitor problems with the Dead that caused her to be offkey at times, but criticism of her often seemed more like the usual grumbling when women appear in all-male enclaves. As a result, although the Keith and Donna band were not the best Dead spinoff, they have never gotten any kind of consideration from obsessive Dead historians, so I will attempt to rectify that now with a brief concert history.

This concert history comes from various sources that are available, including East Bay newspapers in 1975 that have yielded up numerous obscure club dates. However, Bay Area nightclubs only publicized their shows intermittently in the papers, so there are probably many more dates to be found, particularly in Marin County. My information about the Northeast tour is also limited, and I'm sure there are more dates to be found there. However, with no other lists accessible, I thought I would present my information as it currently stands..."

In addition to Weir and Lesh, the multi-generational band features The Duo’s Joe Russo (drums), Dark Star Orchestra’s John Kadlecik (guitar) and two additional members of Weir’s RatDog: Jeff Chimenti (keyboards) and Jay Lane (drums). The band’s three, two-set shows touched on a range of Grateful Dead material, from forgotten early material like “King Solomon’s Marbles” to 1980s hits such as “Touch of Grey.”
