I was irritable all day, and I finally realized at about 1pm that it’s because I’m getting sick. Not cold/cough sick, but the drained, aches and pains, fever sort of sick.

I really shouldn’t take the day off tomorrow, because we have a full run-through of our production of  A Midsummer Night’s Dream happening after school that I’m supposed to be directing. Also, if I go back in tonight to make lesson plans for a sub I’ll miss my second week of RCIA in a row.

Either way, I don’t have it in me to blog anything of substance, so let me just show you what’s been on my mind lately.

1. Facebook – With millions of users each with personal photo libraries, home videos, and constant updates about every miniscule event in their lives, Facebook is definitely the most invasive and widely used social networking site.

Everybody and my mom is on Facebook, so why not you? Seriously, this is a picture of my mom’s Facebook profile (fyi my aunt is on there too). 

2. Twitter – Tired of reading the blogs of friends, celebrities, and tech gurus only once a day? Well, Twitter offers you the chance to read hundreds of mini-posts (140 character limit) from your favorite people, constantly. The downside of Twitter is that it is far less popular than Facebook, but, on the other had, it doesn’t force you to go through the pesky “friending” process, allowing you to follow whoever you want.

That means that if I want to know what Tina Fey is eating for lunch, by golly I can know what Tina Fey is having for lunch.

Heck, you can RT @TinaFey what YOU are having for lunch.

3. Blog – Blogging, as all you loyal readers know, is a delicate and subtle art. With literally tens of readers spending upwards of 2 minutes (on average) on my blog every day, I constantly feel the weight of having to produce excellence on a daily basis. In short, blogging is not to be taken lightly.

If, however, you do feel the call, be sure you choose your platform carefully. While content, site design, and artistic voice mean very little to your overall success, the network that you make yourself a part of does:

4. Gravatar – Ever wonder how I get my handsome mug next to every one of my comments on this blog? Well, Gravatar is the key. Short for “globally recognized avatar,” your Gravatar is attached to your e-mail account and will show up on any of thousands of Gravatar-enabled blogs when you comment.

5. YouTube – I haven’t quite crossed the vlog (video log) threshold yet, but I won’t say I haven’t contemplated it.

YouTube is becoming increasingly mainstream, and everyone from universalmusicgroup and CBS to the NBA and The Vatican is now on board. However, many of the most subscribed channels of all time still include personal vlogs like hotforwords, LisaNova,and, sadly, Fred.

Disappointed by the fact that only the top earning artists in each category are eligible to win a Grammy? If you were handing out the awards, who would have been big in 2008?

Playing Stephanie Gooch, Ted’s ukulele-weilding love-interest (a peripheral, though hopefully recurring, character), Kate not only stole every scene she was in, but even overcame a great Dr. Cox-centered storyline and claimed for herself the title of the episode, “My Lawyer’s In Love.”

Whether you’ve already seen the show or not, you need to check out this extended version of Ted and Stephanie’s duet as captured in the Scrubs Interns webseries (PG-13):

Immediately after watching the episode, I headed to YouTube to hear this song again. YouTube then led me to the rest of Kate’s video repertoire, including her work with Riki Lindhome in the acoustic-comedy duo Garfunkel and Oates, and the the enthrallingly cute solo piece, “Dear Deer”:

YouTube in turn led me to Kate’s personal site, where I found her 5-song EP “Songs” for sale and immediately snatched it up. Though it only amounts to a little less than 12 minutes of music, every second of it is enjoyable.

Irrepressibly  cute, incredibly witty, and seemingly a reasonable person too, Kate deserves 15 minutes of your time today.

It’s not that I didn’t date, it’s just that I always dated guys that appeared normal and then ended up being freaks.

Once, on a first date, in a middle of a restaurant, my date pulled out his Bible, read aloud to me Proverbs 31 and then asked me how I thought I compared. “I don’t,” I replied, “I’m not motivated to wake up at the crack of dawn to spin flax into robes for a boyfriend. Sorry.” 

Sometimes I would lie awake at night dwelling on mistakes made in past relationships, wondering if I was ever going to meet anyone. In retrospect I recognize my problem - I had never defined what I was looking for. Also, quite frankly, I never actually took the time to learn from the past, which left me in a constant cycle of making the same dating blunders again and again.

And it all changed when I decided to build my very own relationship resume.

At the time, I had a married co-worker who, unable to comprehend why a funny, pretty, fashionable gal like me was not dating anyone, offered to set me up. Jokingly, he informed me that I should give him a copy of my resume and some head shots to pass out.

I knew he was kidding, but at the same time it occurred to me that his idea had merit. This was going to be a cathartic experience; it was time for me to put on paper everything I had learned in the past. It was time for me to assess what I had to offer and define what I was looking for. This is what I came up with (click to enlarge):

I’ve coached many people in building their relationship resumes. Here are the basic 5 steps I teach:

1. Create Content That Sells: In today’ dating climate unless you are savvy with your resume, you are not going to land a date. Your resume design should get attention, but it’s really the content of your resume your skills and abilities that determine how many callbacks you can expect. Now is not the time for modesty. Be accurate and honest with your bullet points.

2. Quantify and Use Power-Words: The more specific you can be in describing your past experiences, the better. Identifying the amount of time you spent in your last relationship is a great display to future prospects of your past dedication. Also, power words such as “facilitated,” “participated,” and “encouraged” are real eye-catchers.

3. Avoid Negativity: It is easy to get down on yourself for everything you weren’t in past relationships. This is not the time to dwell on your mistakes, instead positively frame these experiences. For example, let’s say that one of your relationships was basically a glorified booty call and you don’t know how to spin it. Try: “Learned to thrive on last-minute changes” or “Gained ability to be spontaneous.” Always look for the positive.

4. Acknowledge and Accept Gaps: Sometimes you will have gaps between relationships, but this doesn’t have to be a disadvantage. You just need the right take on it. General Rule: Tell what you WERE doing, as gracefully as possible--rather than leave a gap. If you accumulated skills or experiences during the drought, say so.

5. Tweak and Target As Necessary: Keep in mind that depending on your target audience your resume may need to be altered slightly. For example, some potential dates might consider your extensive knowledge of medieval jousting, or your Scrabble win/loss record particularly important. I myself keep several tailored templates: Nerd Guy, Sport’s Guy, Goth Guy, Philosophical Guy, etc.

Finally, if you feel that the paper resume is a bit outdated in the Web 2.0 world, you might try a video resume:

So, during “love month,” if you are feeling left out of the red, white, and pink festivities, build yourself a relationship resume. At worst it will give you a good laugh, and help you reflect on your relational past. At best it could finally land you Mr./Ms. Right.
