Why I'm Leaving WolfNet

(Photo from www.s-sm.org and property of Shattuck-St. Mary's School)

Over the past 12 years, I’ve worked at WolfNet Technologies. I’ve helped grow the company from a small brochure-ware website company that serviced anyone with money in the bank to one of the most respected and successful IDX and real estate tech firms in the industry. I stress the word “helped”; so many other key players at WolfNet deserve the lion’s share of the credit. But I've been a part of it all, coming on board when WolfNet had a only a single real estate client, and we were building the business one customer at a time. 12 years later, it seems like an eternity ago, full of great memories of late nights and weekends, hard travel, lots of "no's", some very lucrative "yes's", and lots of blood sweat and tears for earned rewards.

And now I’m leaving it all.

I honestly believe WolfNet will continue to be an industry leader in IDX and related services. If I were to stay in real estate tech, WolfNet would be the place where I would proudly continue to ply my trade. But that is not my path.

I’m leaving what I’ve spent the last 12 years building because my priorities demand it. I want a better life for my family. More time together. A better environment for Kaitlin growing up. More chances to explore the wilder and more remote areas of this great nation about which I am so passionate. Most importantly, a much happier Rich Bailey.

Thus I have taken a position as a History Instructor at Shattuck-St. Mary’s. My wife has taught here for three years, and loves it, so we will be working together. I will have less than 70 students total, something unheard of in my days as a public school teacher before coming to WolfNet. I’ll be coaching athletics. I’ll be a dorm parent and student advisor. Living on campus and dining with students and other staff in the dining hall. Services in the school chapel. The setting: a picture postcard of stone buildings resembling an East Coast prep school, situated on a hill overlooking a quaint Minnesota farming community. We’ll be part of a family of teachers, coaches and staff dedicated to making a difference in the lives of young people from all over the world, people destined for greatness.

I will dearly miss my friends and colleagues at WolfNet, and throughout the real estate industry. I sincerely hope social media channels will permit us to remain close. It’s been a great adventure and I’ve learned so many things, things that have made me a much better person, and will make me a better teacher.

Simply put, I have sincerely loved the last 12 years. And now I can’t wait to start living the next 30.

Most people talk about the Apocalypse hypothetically. Questions like: "If the world ended tomorrow, would you be happy with your life?" or "If the world ended tomorrow, would you have made a difference?"
There are a significant number of "Rapture" enthusiasts who really do believe the world will end tomorrow on 5/21/11. I will not go into the origins of this particular doomsday theory, but it did get me to contemplate the "what if's." And I thought about this photo, and two contributions I've made to the world in the last 2 years.
In September, 2009, I built a flower bed on the boulevard in front of my house. Tulips and daffodils for the Spring, and other perennials for summer color.
My greatest creation came into this world in May of 2010, my beautiful baby daughter Kaitlin. We didn't know it at the time, but my wife was already pregnant with Kaitlin when I built the flower bed.
So when I look at these two creations together, I am confident in my answers to the questions above. I'm pretty happy with things right now. And while I didn't change the world, I'd like to think I made my own little corner of it just a little prettier.

A Thank You To Remember

A few years ago, I wanted to buy my wife a kayak for her birthday. I didn’t have $800 in cash lying around, so I solicited family members to pitch in, and collectively we gave her a present she will continue to enjoy for years to come.

On the way home from picking up the boat, we passed by Lake Nokomis. I suddenly had an idea for a special Thank-you card, so we pulled over, unloaded the kayak, and walked it 50 yards out onto the still-frozen lake surface. The result was the above image, with the tag line “Tabitha loves her new kayak, but found Spring paddling overrated.” The card was a huge hit, both among contributing family members, as well as friends who saw it on message boards or our refrigerator. It remains a conversation piece today.

When it’s time to send a Thank You card to your customers, consider taking the time to go above and beyond the bland, blank card in a white envelope. Get creative. Use photos or multimedia. Make the card remarkable, and your customers will talk about it, and share their experience with others. It’s one more way to broaden your sphere of influence and grow your business.

Thinking of Clint, Rethinking Priorities

Clint Miller, aka The Real Clint

I spent the early part of this work worrying about money. I have to fix some damage from ice dams, and a recent energy efficiency audit revealed I should add more insulation to my attic. We’ve just had a baby in a less-than-routine delivery, and bought a badly needed car. The bills are piling up, and the thought of putting thousands more into the house with only a long-term return feels a bit overwhelming.

Then I learned Tuesday that my friend Clint Miller has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer in his lungs and liver. Clint and I have never met face to face, but we’ve spoken on the phone and exchanged Twitter and Facebook banter many times. I know we would be very close friends, and in a sense, we already are. Now he’s fighting for his life.

When tragedy impacts someone close to us, we are often left pondering the what-if's, reflecting on our own good fortune...for the time being. I think about the life insurance quote I have collecting virtual dust in my inbox, and the vacations we've put off because of cost. What remains is a need to balance seizing life's fleeting moments that my entire family can cherish, while at the same time securing their future should something happen to me. In a nutshell, perhaps the insulation can wait for now.

So I’ve relaxed my stress over ice dams - today that seems petty - and decided to focus on what’s important, to count my blessings. Namely, my good health, my loving family, and yes, even the under-insulated roof over my head. And once I'm done counting, I'll go back to praying for Clint's recovery, and for the well-being of his beautiful family.

If you would like to contribute to Clint Miller’s fight against cancer, please visit http://clintmillerbenefit.wordpress.com/.

Whatever It Takes - Making Yourself Remarkable

In his book, Small is the New Big, Seth Godin asks, “How dare you settle for less when the world has made it so easy for you to be remarkable?”

On the surface, it’s easy to disagree. Sure, easy for Godin, because he is remarkable. But maybe he means people too often people simply follow the masses , attempting to exceed the existing standards of what is deemed remarkable by others. Maybe to be truly remarkable, you have to achieve according to a different standard. Like former NHL player Lyndon Byers.

NHL players are remarkable if they score a lot of goals, or have a long, illustrious career. Lyndon Byers was not a prolific goal scorer, and played in fewer than 300 NHL games. But I remember Byers as much as I recall any NHL player. And I only saw him play one shift.

Byers was a defenseman whose primary role was to help protect the Bruins’ star Ray Bourque. Fresh from the minors in a game against the old Minnesota North Stars, he took the ice and immediately skated hard into an opponent, resulting in a 2 minute roughing penalty. He picked up another two minutes for cross-checking while skating from the penalty box to the bench for a line change. So 4 minutes in penalties from less than 30 seconds on the ice. That’s rather remarkable, wouldn’t you say?

Byer’s final NHL stats: 279 games played - 28 goals, 43 assists and 1,081 penalty minutes. Nearly 4 penalty minutes per game for a player who wasn't even on the first line. That is also pretty remarkable.

I don’t condone violence in sports, though fighting is part of professional hockey, and we accept that. Behind every star is a goon watching his back. Most people won’t remember Byers as a remarkable player like Wayne Gretzky or Gordie Howe. But in the 20 years since I saw him play one shift for Boston, I never forgot the name Lyndon Byers.

As a REALTOR®, you may never be remarkable through sales volume or closed transactions. But doing something remarkably different than your competition, or displaying one moment of remarkable service may endear you to your customers in a remarkable way, one they’ll never forget.

“Teach Them Properly, Major!” – Creating Real Estate Soldiers

The 1989 movie Glory has many memorable scenes, but the rifle training scene always sticks out in my mind. Colonel Shaw knew from his own battle experience that anyone can be taught to aim and shoot a rifle. But what really mattered was preparing soldiers for combat, and to remain cool under fire. Education and training lack value when they do not prepare someone for real life situations.

As you evaluate how you train your agents and staff, ask yourself: “Am I teaching farmers how to shoot? Or am I training soldiers how to fight?” The company who tailors their training to creating real estate soldiers will recruit better agents, generate more business, and create customers who will sing the praises of your brand to the world.

I've neglected the Gopher Files lately, and felt it was long overdue for a post, but couldn't think of anything to write. Then I came across this photo from a fishing trip on Rainy Lake near Voyagers National Park. Our guide made something called "Shore Lunch", which features freshly caught walleye. But the first course is a bacon and onion sandwich, which tastes even better than it sounds.

This is about 2.5 pounds of bacon cooking on a Coleman stove, and 4 of us polished it all off. I'm pretty sure our guide had a defibrillator on the boat, just in case.

Apparently bacon cures everything, even writer's block.

Hyper-local Revisited - Now Are the Foxes!

I have blogged before about the importance of knowing your market on the hyper-local level. Understanding the intrinsic value of a neighborhood puts you ahead of those who would only assign value to a property based on bedrooms and bathrooms. I have cited access to local trails and natural features, and proximity to parkland and festivals.
Sunday was a beautiful Autumn day in South Minneapolis, and we took a walk through around Hiawatha Golf Course. We were fortunate to see wildlife that normally are only reserved for more remote locations, but the preponderance of green space in Minneapolis provides healthy habitat for many critters. This spectacular pileated woodpecker was easily 18 inches tall, and pecking away at a neighbor's tree. The homeowner didn't even notice it, nor seemed to care about such an amazing bird in his front yard. His loss.

After getting ice cream, we returned home along Minnehaha Parkway, and saw a red fox making his way along the 13th fairway. Fox are not that uncommon in urban areas, but the brilliance of his red coat against the green grass was a beautiful sight. I've also seen mink at HGC, especially near #2 along Lake Hiawatha.

We finished our walk at one of several playgrounds within walking distance; this one at Hiawatha Lake Community Center has swings for little babies like Kaitlin. What a glorious afternoon with family. I cannot imagine a better place to be living.

Understanding the ability to experience days like Sunday can make you a better real estate agent with better knowledge and understanding of the communities you serve. Be the expert, be hyper-local. Your business can thrive from it.

Once upon a time there was a great River that flowed unhindered from Northern Minnesota to the Gulf Of Mexico.

The River used to manage itself, and we lived in harmony with the Father of Waters. Flood plains were great for farming, so long as the farmers understood that occassionally their fields would flood. The River provided good transportation, so long as pilots understood the river would sometimes be too low to run, and full of snags and boulders to be avoided. Towns could flourish near the river, so long as townspeople understood they had to build on high ground.

But we wanted more.

So the Army Corps of Enginners created a series of locks, dams and levies to control the Old Man. Dams and locks created pools north of Cairo, IL to St. Paul, where even during drought, a constant depth of at least 9 feet could be maintained for boat and barge traffic. Levies enabled farmers and townspeople to encroach the River and live in flood plains, or even below sea level. Wetlands - nature's best flood and pollution control - were developed and all but disappeared.

The result? We've had 3 or 4 100-year floods since 1993. Safe to say the levies and dams turned the 100-year flood plain into a 10 or 20-year flood plain. Pollution has been a terrible problem, especially from farm runoff (though we've made great strides recently to improve this). Erosion has created a dead zone in the mouth at the Gulf of Mexico. Ultimately, our dependence on the River forced us to build more dams, levies and flood control devices. The more we tried to control the uncontrollable, the greater the catastrophic failure would be. 5 years ago, we saw what such a catastrophe might look like in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, and the failure of New Orleans river levies.

Was the bursting of the real estate bubble our industry's Katrina? In a sense, yes. I think the tax credit probably offered legitimate relief for a time to the industry; we had no "Brownie, this tax credit is doing one heck of a job, " moment that I can identify. But it wasn't a permanent solution; lobbying for another extension might be something akin to just sending in more FEMA trailers. Perhaps the real estate market is capable of correcting itself, and the list of unintended consequences in attempts to fix it may be long and scary.

But like the Mississippi, we've already done too much to simply let nature take its course at this point. Too many people live in the River's hinterland to simple remove the dams and levies. Likewise, millions of people have so much of their existence tied to real estate. I don't think we can simply stop enacting policy to help distressed property owners any more than we can stop maintaining dams. NAR will continue to lobby for tax credits and incentive programs as the Corps will continue to reinforce levies.

The keys will be in how we understand the natural forces of the market, and what we can and cannot control. We need to recognize the difference between a short-term solution, and sound, long-term policy and practice. Balancing the needs of the banks, homeowners, and REALTORS® will be a lot like balancing the needs of shipping, farming, environmentalism and residents who live near the river. There will be winners and losers, especially in the short term. Do we have the strength to withstand this flood?

This post is in part a response to Jay Thompson's blog post - http://www.phoenixrealestateguy.com/will-the-homebuyer-tax-credit-return

Don't It Make Her Brown Eyes Blue

Tabitha and I both have brown eyes. Kaitlin's eyes are blue and have shown no sign of changing over to brown, though I understand this can take up to 5 years. And there is the remote possibility we both have the recessive blue gene, and Kaitlin got two little "b"'s and will keep her baby blues forever.
Of course, the typical jokes have been made by friends. Some suggested the mail man, though I doubt she can father children at all. But looking at baby pictures from both Tabitha and myself, I think there can be little doubt who the parents are.
So no real estate moral, lesson or tip. Just a shameless opportunity to post photos of my precious little girl, and of the parents decades ago.

Could a Raccoon Steal Your Clients?

We took Kaitlin on her first camping trip last weekend. Tabitha and I are experienced campers, and we were well-prepared for the heavy rain we had the first night.

But even the most seasoned veterans make mistakes. On our last night, I neglected to put the dry food bin into the truck before bed. A very opportunistic raccoon had a craving for junk food and coffee. Our normal "leave no trace" mantra was disturbed by a trail of Cheetos and snickers wrappers leading into the forest, and gourmet coffee grounds scattered all over our picnic table. I spent 20 minutes securing trash from the woods by flashlight, and putting the rest of our food away. The next morning, we scouted the remaining trash and food on the gound and cleaned it all up before heading home.

While even the most experienced real estate professional is capable of making rookie mistakes, it's how that agent takes ownership and corrects the problem that truly reveals their character. For your clients, you alone can choose how you confront a mistake. You can be the agent running through the woods at 2am to retrieve that empty Cheetos bag. Or be the one who stays in bed and leaves the site trashed for the next camper.

Going Hyper-Local: Just Another Walk in the Park

Recent heavy rains in Minneapolis found us walking along lower Minnehaha Creek to Minnehaha Falls to see the raging torrent. Minneahaha Falls Park was packed on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, as it has been for decades. Normally the falls are a trickle in mid-summer, and not nearly this dramatic. In a 1967 visit from President Lyndon Johnson during a severe drought, city officials ordered local fire hydrants opened up fully to create a more scenic waterfall via the storm drains that lead to the creek. Certainly it was nothing like this.
But the falls weren't the only attraction. The park happened to be hosting Swedish Heritage Day. Tabitha's maiden name is Nord, so she felt right at home in the Svergie blue and gold. We ate Swedish meatballs and lingenberries; normally we'd have to trek to Ikea for such a delight. And we heard an acoustic rendition of the Abba tune "Fernando", sung in Swedish. Who would have thought I'd be getting so cultured when I woke up that day?

Amazingly, only 3 blocks of our entire walk is on normal residential streets. The remaining miles are all along designated trails and paths as part of the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation system. The pleasant walking, the great scenery and the accidental Swedish encounter reminded us of why we bought a home in this neighborhood.
Only a hyper-local expert can impart to their clients the intangibles of owning a home in a specific neighborhoods, and the opportunities for experiences like ours. Blog about it, talk about it, and learn your clients' interests so you can cater to directly to them. Your value as an agent rests largely on your local knowledge, and how you impart it to the greater community.

The Regional Multiple Listing Service of Minnesota now offers a complete price change history as part of its VOW data feed. Web site visitors can access this and other data like Days on Market so long as they register and authenticate their email address. It's a terrific benefit for the consumer, and a great lead capture tool.

Of course, this information is quite revealing when you find a listing that has been on the market for over 9 months, had 10 price reductions, and is now listed at less than 46% of the original list price. It begs all kinds of questions, and I would love to hear your comments.

NOTE: This listing is not a Roger Fazendin REALTORS Listing; but merely one accessible via their VOW solution.

Engage Me, Please!

I am following a certain someone on Twitter. I retweet her comments, throwing in the odd question to stimulate dialogue. I am a fan of her Facebook page, and a friend. I read her blog and submit comments. I am also one of her customers, passionate about her industry and her business. I've even sent her testimonials and photos from my experience with her service.

Yet she doesn't engage. Not at the personal level, or as a representative of her business. Any response or question I post is a dead end. She's a one-way street on the information superhighway, a passive voice in an interactive world.

Doesn't she know that this social media thing is all about engaging with others? You engage your customers and contacts to build a sphere of influence. You take an interest in their interests and their interest in you grows. Subsequently their own followers and contacts may also take an interest in you, creating overlapping spheres of influence. Perhaps they also will engage you in dialogue. And so on, and so on. Eventually, someone needs the service you provide, and they engage you on that. Congratulations, you've just generated business from social media.

But she doesn't follow this path. She just posts and stops there. If you build it, they will come. Nice theory.

I would shout about her from the top of the tallest tree to anyone who would listen. If she engaged me, anyone in my sphere who shares my passion would likely engage her, too. But she's leaving my reach on the table. Too bad for her, even if my reach isn't the biggest.

Still, I don't need her to engage me. I'll continue to spread her message to my own little corner of the virtual world. I am happy to do it because I believe in what she does, not because I expect something in return. Engagement sometimes means giving unconditionally. I have to believe sooner or later she'll see the light.

I am my mother's only child, and will turn 40 later this month. It's fair to say Mom at one time had given up hope of ever having grandchildren. So you can imagine her elation when she got to hold her new granddaughter for the first time. I thought her email would make a nice post, and I think it speaks for itself.
Dearest Kaitlin,
I can't believe I'm back in New York and you're still in Minneapolis. I
woke up this morning wanting to hold you. I've already looked at the
pictures your mom & dad posted to the Web at least a dozen times. I'm
hoping they'll post some new pictures of you soon, 'cause I know you're
staying awake a lot more than you did when you were in the hospital.
What I'd really like is a picture of you and Scarlett together on the
couch. I love the way Scarlett snuggles up against your mom when she is
feeding you. Very cute. And maybe if the weather's nice this weekend,
Dad will take some pictures of you OUTSIDE!
It's cold and rainy in New York today too. So I'm thinking I might as
well be back in Minneapolis with you and Mom watching the Marriage Ref.
I'm having a hard time concentrating on work, I confess, 'cause all I
can think about is you and what a great time I had and how I can't wait
to see you and Mom and Dad again. It was the best Mother's Day ever!
I hope you're having a good day today and not getting too upset when you
have your diaper changed. I miss you, miss you, miss you. I think you
are the luckiest baby to have been born to your Mom & Dad, and I know
I'm the luckiest Grandma.
I can't wait to show you New York, but I expect I'll see you again in
Minneapolis before you come here.
Grandpa John can't wait to see you in person, and you have a whole slew
of cousins who are waiting to meet you too. So hurry up and grow.
We all love YOU!
Xoxoxoxoxo,
Grandma Di

Full Disclosure - Scarlet is our cat, who has to our surprise really warmed up to Kaitlin, in spite of the attention she gets.

For over 5 months now I've been caring for a 14-year old yellow lab named Cleo. Cleo's master is now able to take her again, and today was the last day we're officially roommates.

I am happy to be relieved of the burden Cleo brings. She needs daily medication, and has to go out more often that adult dogs normally require, which forces me to bring her with me to work every day. This in turn limits what I can do before or after work, such as going to the gym on the way home. I couldn't leave her in the truck for an hour when it's -20 outside, could I? And besides, my wife and I are expecting our first child next month, so we're going to have our hands full. We don't need someone else's dog adding to the chaos ahead.

Yet in spite of all the hassle, Cleo has enabled a voyage of discovery since she's become a more regular fixture in our lives. I tried Skjoring for the first time. I discovered the wonderful off-leash parks Minneapolis offers its residents. We found the only dog-friendly bed and breakfast in Alma, WI last month. And the additional voyage of self-discovery by having a sweet old pooch in our lives has been even more rich and rewarding.

So it's fair to say today I was feeling a sense of loss in spite of the relief. To help ease this pain, Cleo and I grabbed lunch and headed down to a picnic area on the Mississippi River, where we could enjoy one last outing together. I'll still see her every day at work, but I admit I'll miss her taking up the corner of my dining room.

While on our picnic, a middle aged woman in a wheelchair sat nearby on the riverbank with another woman who appeared to be a caregiver. She just kept staring and smiling at Cleo, so I indulged her and brought the dog over for introductions. The woman was overjoyed at this opportunity. It was clear petting Cleo made her day; such is the healing power of a sweet and friendly dog.

So as we returned to the office, I thought of the past 5 months, and how I am probably going to miss Cleo more than I imagined. I thought of the woman in the wheelchair, and how many days of mine Cleo has made over the years.

Lessons from Naive Optimism

This patio table isn't dirty. I just cleaned it two days ago. It's pollen, deposited by a rainshower that moved through town yesterday.
After a hard winter even by Minnesota standards, we've been blessed with an unusually warm and early spring. It's as if we skipped March altogether, and April lasted only a few days before experiencing conditions more akin to early May. Tulips and daffodils are already blooming in some yards, and trees and shrubs are budding rapidly. Our annual surge of Spring optimism has erupted everywhere.
But the past week of 70 and even 80 degree temperatures has carried with it invisible demons. Allergy sufferers like me have endured sleepless nights and suffered from swollen, scratchy throats, watery eyes, and terrible congestion brought from massive clouds of invisible tree pollen.
And the risk of a late season snowstorm or hard freeze still threatens. With a marginal sense of dread, I am aware the bulbs I labored to plant last fall that have sprouted weeks early could be destroyed overnight with a relapse into winter's grasp.
As Real Estate markets stabilize, it's important to understand what signs are truly indicative of recovery, and what are only temporary furloughs that may disguise more trouble ahead. Make sure you aren't celebrating the return of happy days prematurely, and be prepared for the possibility the worst may be yet to come. Make business decisions with these realities in mind.
And much like writing a blog at 4am because I can't sleep with these terrible allergies, be sure you continue your hard work to make the most of temporary setbacks. Doing so will make sure they remain only temporary. Winter never lasts, but we have to remind ourselves sometimes it snows in April...or even May, in Minnesota.

A Special Anniversary

My wife and I have an anniversary coming up...in June.
But today marks the 7th anniversary of something arguably much more important. Today marks seven years of life resulting from Tabitha's generous gift to her mother.
Penny was diagnosed in the 80's with a benign brain tumor that had been causing seizures. Tabitha's father died from the same kind of tumor that had grown on his heart. Make your own call on the incredible coincidence of two people from the same small farming town in South Dakota getting the same rare tumor. We've speculated DDT or other pesticides may have played a role, but I digress.
Years of medication to control the tumor and resulting seizures took their toll on Penny's kidneys. In 2003, she was told within only a few months, she would be forced onto dialysis unless a donor could be found. You know about those organ donor lists. Tabitha did not hesitate to submit to a compatibility test, and scored high as a match. Surgery was scheduled for a few weeks later.
The technology used is amazing, the results even more so. Tabitha's kidney was removed via a laparoscopic technique, leaving only one visible two-inch scar, and went home 2 days after surgery. She ran the Twin Cities Marathon and skied the American Birkebeiner less than a year later. Penny was producing urine using the transplanted kidney within an hour of the procedure.
So today is special because 7 years of life is an amazing gift, and worth celebrating. And organ donation, whether live or post-mortem, is a gift that keeps on giving.
Please make sure you are listed as an organ donor on your driver's license. A mother's life may depend on it.

Would You Like a Window Seat...Sort Of?

There may not be a more uncomfortable seat on a commercial airliner than the last row window seat of a DC9.
Actually, there isn't really a window; it's a white piece of plastic sealed into a window-shaped frame on the cabin wall of the fuselage. This is because one of the plane's two ancient engines is just on the other side, so there wouldn't be a view anyway. But what you cannot see, you can certainly hear. And feel. The noise is deafening, especially at takeoff, and continues throughout the flight, making conversation all but impossible with the person sitting next to you. And even at full, ear-shattering volume, it's hard to hear music on your i-pod.
And the seat itself isn't much of a seat, either. It rests directly against the rear bulkhead, and thus cannot recline. The vibrations reverberrate through the metal frame directly into the muscles of your back, which aches for hours after landing.
And so it was I found myself in such a seat on the second leg of my flight to New Orleans to attend the Keller Williams annual conference know as Family Reunion. For three hours I suffered through the noise, the bumps and the pain. And not once did I complain.
Because I was grateful to be in that seat, on that flight. I almost wasn't. Not because of bad weather, delay, unexpected emergency, mechanical failure or act of God.
It was because of the airline I like to refer to as Delta Novus, or if you're a Prince fan, the airline formerly known as Northwest.
While connecting in Detroit, we were refused entry to the jetway. The flight was overbooked, but that wasn't the issue. We had boarding passes and confirmed seat assignments, and normally would have boarded anyway.
The problem was that this particular flight was scheduled on a DC9. The gate agent told us there was a weight issue. The full flight and it's luggage apparently made the decades-old aircraft too heavy to meet FAA standards to take off. At least a dozen passengers were in the same boat, standing at gate A17 with bewildered stares.
Delta Novus was asking for volunteers to stay overnight. $500 travel voucher, hotel, dinner and breakfast. All if we would agree
to be booked on a flight the next day. Of course, as convention exhibitors, this was not an option. Thousands of dollars on overpriced Internet connectivity, booth furniture and hotel reservations were riding on our arrival that evening to set up for the exhibit hall opening the following day.
Fortunately, this was our lucky day. It's amazing how far being polite and patient with a gate agent can go. She didn't create the
problem, but it was her responsibility to handle it, something anyone in the service industry has experienced at one time or another. Within a few minutes, we happily settled in infamous DC9 row 21.
I didn't know why Delta Novus had these fuel-guzzling antiques still in service. And I didn't care. I sat in my noisy, uncomfortable seat with a smile on my face knowing I would sleep in the Big Easy that night. And maybe I'd dream of a window seat with a view.

When Tabitha and I were first dating, we agreed Valentine's Day was best celebrated with a home-cooked meal. Going out can be fun, but having both worked in food service, we considered the holiday an amateur night, like St. Patrick's Day or New Year's Eve for drinking.
Our theory is the best servers want the night off because so many people go out who normally don't.Diners try to impress their dates and spend more than they otherwise might, and any shortage of funds can easily come out of the server's tip. Service can be poor accordingly, especially with the inevitable crowds.
But an intimate dinner by candlelight removes most of the intangibles, and leaves the evening's itinerary solely at our own discretion.
Tabitha cooked for us our first Valentine's Day in 2002, making a rack of lamb cooked to exquisite medium-rare perfection. There were sides and of course, red wine. And a homemade chocolate mousse for dessert. It was an evening unparalleled in romance; never mind it was in my dumpy apartment on St. Paul's West Side. We might as well have been in the honeymoon suite of a Swiss Chalet.
The tradition continues to this day, and last night the rack of lamb once again took center stage. This will be our last Valentine's Day as a couple; next year our daughter will join us, so the intimacy will change, we expect. But we've never once looked back on staying in on the nation's most popular date night. No restaurant can give us what we've been able to give each other.
Happy Valentine's Day, and thanks again for reading the Gopher Files!
Rich
