UNUSUAL FOR US, THAT'S FOR SURE!

This trip was an unusual one for my husband and I: we planned it where the journey was the destination, rather than vice versa. Because of its difference for us, it will be written up in a variety of ways.

Our journey was almost not to be. We had some stumbling blocks placed in our way, when it comes to house repairs. One of the biggest hurdles, after everything was reserved and set, was our house A/C -- it froze up and killed itself in the height of one Missouri heat wave in late June. When it was finally determined that we weren't going to get a new one installed for about 2 weeks, we made an appointment for an install for a date in July, and made the decision to just leave. (Spoiler alert: the new A/C was installed the day after we returned! Right smack dab in the middle of yet-another-Missouri-heat-wave.)

The theme of this trip was Scenic Highways and ByWays of the Pacific Northwest -- that we had not visited on previous trips. Where we could, we threw in a history stop or something else that we really felt was a "must see" for us.

Our lodging was a mixture of different brands of chains, building up as many points as we can. Only one place was a very small chain with hotels mostly in Montana. Food was a great mix of local places, chains that we don't have here in our area, and occasional breakfasts at the hotels where available. We found fuel to be more expensive in Oregon and Washington, and we had the diesel truck on this trip. (It's getting up in years and may be sidelined to local trips only. As you read the report, you may understand why.) Fuel was anywhere from $2.99/gal up to $4.65-- that's what we paid -- you could find diesel up to $5.35/gal in WA state, but we used Gas Buddy and didn't mind going 3 or 4 miles out of our way if the price was right.

That said....here goes!

FIRST DAYS - HOME TO LA GRANDE OR

We wanted to get away from our area during the 4th of July weekend, so we left before that and spent the 4th of July in the Strategic Air Command Aerospace Museum in Ashland, NE.

35F89054-E56C-47DF-9195-772BC5CB9FDE_4_5005_c

2222688C-50CB-4A8F-9632-4374121F4B0D_4_5005_c

The next day, we headed west across I-80. Of course that's not exactly a "scenic" highway. But there was some history to think about, and if you get off the highway, you can see a Pony Express Station at Gothenburg. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it was small and a wee bit disappointing.

CF8263F6-F29A-46FB-96EC-1C2348AC416C_4_5005_c

We overnighted at Cheyenne, WY, Tremonton, UT, and then that's where we started having issues with the truck (despite having it checked, oil changed, new tires, etc before we left). We were just outside of La Grande, OR on I-84 when the truck, whose battery icon had been flickering all day, suddenly had the gauges go nuts. We got off at the La Grande exit and lo-and-behold, there was a Ford dealership 3 blocks down. We pulled in there to request some help, and they immediately came out to see what was going on. We weren't there for 3 minutes when the engine completely died. Legacy Ford service managers tried to jumpstart it, but when that was unsuccessful, they stated it was probably the alternator. It was 4:15, they were closing at 5, and they'd be able to get us an alternator the next day. So we were stranded. Their driver got us and our stuff over to a nearby Hampton Inn. We were there for 2 nights, as they couldn't get us on the road before 4 pm. We had to replan some of our trip, but by golly, Legacy Ford had our vehicle ready so that we could leave after our 2nd night in the Hampton. This wasn't the first issue with the truck on this trip, but there was nothing as serious as this.

Quite an amazing sum of dirt and rock has been removed thus far.
May 30th at 3:00 pm
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Water is still flowing down the channel, and most of the tractors are out of sight today.
The thing to notice from last month (May 30th) is that sides are cleaner, they have removed alot of rock on both sides. It looks to me that the drop over the last month is about five feet or so.
Well-- on to July 30th in a a month!

Hi!
My wife, daughter, and I are planning a road trip from Phoenix, AZ to 3 Utah national parks (Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef). It looks like the majority of the trip is on highway 89 north (goes all the way from Flagstaff to Zion) and then after Capitol Reef we'd go south on highway 163 and 160 back to PHX (this part crosses a bit through the western part of Navajo nation)

My main question is, is this a fairly safe route? Safe meaning we'll have plenty of gas stations, not too much isolation, bigger highways, etc.? My daughter will be 6 months old or so then so for sure want to make sure its safe.

Thanks!

Having received tremendous help before, I am now planning a long, solo road trip, one last challenge for a 77 year old man. I would like to leave St. Louis, travel through Omaha (2 nights to visit friend), see Glacier National Park and head towards San Francisco (3 days) and then back. Have already been to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons, so skipping those.

Mostly looking for scenic drive, some picture taking (too old to hike far or tough ones). Want to do Omaha to Glacier park on a mostly direct route. After that, from Glacier National Park to San Francisco area is where I am sort of confused. A part says to go to Seattle and drive down the coast.

In any case, please suggest a scenic route. I can take as much as 3 weeks with 2 days in Omaha, 4 in San Francisco.

Your suggestions are deeply appreciated.

Good day!

recently married and moving Raleigh in the Fall to purchase our first home. Going to avoid that first Southern Summer. ; )

So far it's seems best to do the small Uhaul truck/chase car method.

We understand so far it's about 35 hours total, 5,200 Miles.

We want an efficient straight route, we understand the 10>15>40, straightaway across.

Time is of the essence as I need to get back online for work asap upon arrival. So no side trips, or unnecessary stoppage.

Please recommend,

Route:
"Recommended miles driven in a day, likely cities we would end up at to stay overnight" (Assuming at least 8 hours behind the wheel if not more, we will start at 8 and find our tolerance/pace to add) Newbies at this. Are we looking at 5 days? 6?

Lodging and truck safety:
What types of places to overnight with our truck contents and us in mind. Any particular Hotel chains that have cameras in the parking lots for example?

Of course Cities and anything else you can think of to avoid. And general trip recommendations for this adventure!

I'll stop here, please ask any questions you like!

Thank you!

D.

Hey everyone,

This group has been a fantastic resource for planning our budget-friendly trips to the West Coastthanks for all the great tips and advice!

Were now planning a road trip east to Tampa, FL sometime in May or early June to visit my wifes sister, a retired nurse whos been inviting us for years.

It looks like we have two main route options:

One via I-20 to I-10

The other taking I-45, which eventually merges into I-10, then briefly shifts to I-12 before reconnecting with I-10.

Were not planning any major detoursjust looking to enjoy the drive and scenery. Well be stopping overnight about halfway to break up the trip.

Would love any input on either route, especially from folks whove done this drive. Thanks in advance!

In addition to solving the bugs previously mentioned, Tom has added some new functionality to the Advanced Maps page. Now when doing a keyword search, it is both possible to restrict the number of new maps or expand the number of found attractions.

This is explained in the notes and reproduced here:

Quote:

To Find an RTA Library Map that you can use and/or customize for planning your trip:
1. Look at the left-hand side of this page. You will see a box labeled "RTA Maps Library." Scroll through the list until you find one that interests you. Hint: The first word in the map name is a geographic designation that makes it easier to browse the list. An example is the word "West," as in "West AZ-NM SST 1 Van Horn to Las Cruces."
2. Use the Keyword search box. A search term must be at least three letters long. You can use state names or towns or whatever you wish. If an RTA Library Map exists that includes that keyword, it will appear in the "RTA Maps" list in the box directly below the RTA Maps Library. (Note: When the map pane first loads, only the attractions appear on the map. But if you click on the map link in the "RTA Maps" list, the map (blue line and attractions) will load in the map pane.
3. There is another button "Narrow Search" that can be used to refine the keyword search. Once the Keyword Search has run, you will see a list of maps and attractions, you can narrow the search results to find what you are looking for. As an example: A keyword search for California returns lots attractions and maps -- So enter lodging and click Narrow Search -- this could be further refined by entering desert in keyword search box and so forth.
4. Update April 2025: "Widen Search" is used to expand the keyword search. Complementary to Narrow Search above, this button will enable you to add other attractions and maps to a previously run search - for example, if you want to see attractions in an additional vicinity than that of the attractions you’ve previously found.
5. Use the vicinity search. Identify a search radius in miles and then click the map pane and you will find any RTA Library Maps within that radius. Look for "Search for RTA Library Maps within."

One idiosyncratic aspect of this program is that when you request a "Widened Search" the program loads the new results in alphabetical order but it can't re-sort the entire list, because the program doesn't "see" the original data.

But it is still a cool add-on.

Check it out and let us know what you think of it.

Hi Everyone! Appreciate any advice you all can provide in advance!

My family and I are moving from Philadelphia to San Francisco in June. We have a senior dog that 60 lbs, so flying is out of the picture and we like the idea of a family adventure to start off our life on the other coast. We looked into renting an RV and costs are surprisingly not as bad as I thought it would be for a one way, ~$4500 plus gas, tolls, campgrounds, etc. Just the cost of having a service transport our pup west was going to be $7k so we're saving money :)

We have never taken a trip in an RV anywhere, let alone across the country so I'm looking for some advice on planning the trip. Mapping the trip, it looks like right around 3000 miles plus whatever stops and detours we make. As much as we want to be able to see some sights, we have a pretty compressed window for getting out west. The notional plan is to leave on a Sunday morning and then arrive in San Francisco that next Saturday (6 days). We would need to return the RV on Saturday morning so really 5 days of driving unless we get an early start Saturday. Is 600 miles per day unreasonable with two drivers?

Just for reference, I have done the trip from Philadelphia to Chicago (730 miles, 11.5 hours) by car, solo in a single day three times now. It wasn't pleasant but I made it work.

Tom and I have been working the maps database for most of the past year, updating the RTA RoadTrip Attractions on the RTA Custom Maps database, keeping everything current and reducing the link-rot.

A new glitch has arisen that is changing the correct GPS locations for RA's that we have edited and updated to GPS coordinates in Pasadena, California and Cloudcroft, New Mexico. If you wanted to see an example of this bizarre issue: put Louisville Slugger in the keyword text box on the Advanced Maps page

Quote:

-- click "Keyword search" and see where the marker is! (Yep, the marker has moved from Louisville, KY to Pasadena, California.)

We are on the case, so if you are looking at RA's in the RTA Custom Maps and see peculiar map placements for the RA -- this is the reason. We will get it resolved and restore all of the GPS locations to the proper locations as soon as we can.
