The application process has unfortunately been blighted by a flyer, full of inaccuracies, that has been circulated around North Walsham. Deadline Monday: Stop the plan to make Illinois residents pay for a $3 billion dirty coal gasification plant.

Dear Daniel,

Illinois ratepayers could soon be forced to foot the bill for a new, three billion dollar coal-to-natural-gas plant in Chicago's southeast side.

New York based Leucadia National Corporation wants to use costly and dirty technology to turn coal into synthetic natural gas, which consumers would then be forced to purchase at above-market rates.

The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) has the power to protect Illinois consumers by rejecting Leucadia's outrageous plan — and it is taking public comments for the next few days before its likely decision on Tuesday.

Deadline Monday: Tell the Illinois Commerce Commission to reject Leucadia's plan for making Illinois residents pay for a $3 billion dirty energy project. Click here to submit a public comment now.

While Leucadia's Orwellian marketing materials refer to the proposed coal gasification plant as a "clean energy project,"¹ the reality is that coal gasification is an energy-intensive process with greenhouse gas emissions more than twice as high as traditional, dirty coal plants. This plant would also use more than 10 million gallons of water from the Calumet River each day, while returning just two million gallons.²

Under the plan ICC is considering, Illinois residents would be forced to pick up the tab for this dirty coal project, potentially paying higher rates for decades.

Understandably, many Southeast Chicago residents don't want the dirty Leucadia coal plant in their neighborhood,³ and they've been holding rallies and protests in opposition.⁴

Over the next few days, ratepayers throughout Illinois need to make sure the Illinois Commerce Commission knows that Illinois residents don't want to pay for Leucadia's dirty new coal gasification plant.

With Chicago's Fisk and Crawford coal plants now scheduled to be retired later this year,⁵ Illinois has made real progress recently in the fight against dirty sources of energy. Allowing the dirty Leucadia coal gasification plant to be constructed at the expense of ratepayers would be a huge step in the wrong direction.

Where old bumper cars go

Remember driving the bumper cars at amusement parks or a fair, don't you? They were so much fun.....

Well, now what do you do with old Bumper Cars? (check out the license plates!)

Yes, you read that right; these little beasties are street legal.

They run on either Kawasaki or Honda motorcycle engines and co-opt vintage bumper car bodies into the most awesome form of mini-car we've seen in too long. There are seven of these little monsters floating around California and they're all the creation of one man, Tom Wright, a builder in the outskirts of San Diego who figured the leftovers of the Long Beach Pike amusement park needed a more dignified end than the trash heap. They were originally powered by two cylinder Harley Davidson Motorcycle engines but they rattled like heck because of the two cylinder Vibration and Tom replaces them with four cylinder Honda or Kawasaki 750'sAnd a couple have been measured as capable of 160 MPH, which is terrifyingly fast in machines with such a short wheelbase. By the way, they are almost indestructible in accidents!

(And they'd also be very good on gas...

Shell plans to drill for oil in the Arctic Ocean this summer.

Take action and demand Shell stop its plans to drill in the Arctic.

Right this minute a global fleet of Arctic destroyers is speeding towards one of the last unspoiled places on earth.

The ships are part of oil giant Shell's mission to drill the very first wells in the pristine waters off the coast of Alaska. It's insane, but melting sea ice from global warming has made it a reality. If Shell finds oil, the Arctic oil rush will be on.

It's not over yet though. People are pushing back. Greenpeace New Zealand activists (including Xena Warrior Princess star Lucy Lawless) occupied a drill ship and prevented it from leaving for the Arctic for several days. And just last week later activists occupied two icebreakers in Finland.

But to stop Shell for good, we eventually need the public support of millions around the world. Daniel, that means you.

Join the 350,000 people from around the world who have already taken action and demand Shell stop its plans to put the fragile Arctic at risk.

Widespread public opposition here in the US is going to be the key to stopping Shell. The US government is responsible for giving Shell the green light to drill. Greenpeace will be delivering these messages to the company soon. Our goal is to add the names of at least 40,000 Americans to that list before we do. Your message matters.

Shell isn't prepared for a disaster in the Arctic Ocean. No one is. The Arctic Ocean makes the Gulf of Mexico look like a flat, calm lake. With constant high seas, icebergs and massive waves, there's no way to effectively cleanup an oil spill in the Arctic Ocean. Even the head of the US Coast Guard has publicly admitted that his agency would have little chance of dealing with a spill in the frozen Arctic on their own.

The plan Shell has submitted actually includes using things like shovels and brooms to cleanup a potential spill. It would be funny if there wasn't so much at stake.

All Shell cares about is its corporate bottom line. Polar bears and unspoiled natural beauty are just obstacles to making ever greater profits. Together we can create a public obstacle Shell can't overcome — but it's going to take millions of us.

Add your voice to the growing list of people who will not stay quiet as one of the last wildernesses on earth is destroyed and help save the Arctic.

We need healthy food — not five more years of giveaways to Big Ag.

Dear Daniel,

Every five years, the federal farm bill sets our nation's food policies — it's the single biggest factor in determining what ends up on your plate.

Right now Congress is only providing minimal support for healthy, local and organic foods while expanding wasteful subsidies and giveaways that support the wealthiest agribusinesses — at the expense of family farmers. This year's bill could be even worse.

The Senate Agriculture Committee just released a draft version of the 2012 Farm Bill which preserves these handouts while cutting vital conservation programs.²

We need a better Farm Bill. So we're we're standing with Environmental Working Group to stop the giveaway to Big Ag and support food and farm policies that protect our environment and expand access to healthy food.

Meanwhile, Big Ag is working hard to keep open the spigot that sends billions of dollars a year in subsidies to growers of commodity crops like corn, soy and cotton. More than 74 percent of that money goes to wealthy agribusinesses, not to small-scale family farmers who need them.

The bill that emerges from the Senate Agriculture Committee will likely be the best version we can hope for right now — as it will only get more unbalanced in negotiations with the House. It's vital that the committee members hear from you now.
