2011 Porsche Boxter Black Edition

As is typical of a Porsche sportscar, at the heart of the Porsche Boxster S Black Edition beats a flat-six ‘boxer’ engine. Mounted in front of the rear axle behind the seats, the 3.4-litre six-cylinder engine is similar to that fitted to the Boxster S, with direct fuel injection for greater power and efficiency. In the Black Edition its output is 320 hp – 10 hp more than in the Boxster S. The revised engine reaches its rated power at 7,200 rpm, the Boxster S power pack at 6,400 rpm. Peak torque of 370 Nm – boosted by 10 Newton metres – is available at 4,750 rpm. This increase in output and power equals more dynamics, and the Porsche Boxster S Black Edition underpins its leading position with a superior driving performance. With its standard six-speed manual transmission, it accelerates from 0-62 mph in 5.2 seconds, a tenth of a second faster than the Boxster S. This extra performance has not been achieved at the expense of fuel economy, however, for the Porsche Boxster S Black Edition contents itself with as much fuel as the Boxster S: 28.8 mpg Combined (NEDC).

The colour concept of the Porsche Boxster S Black Edition is consistent in every detail. The model lettering painted in black on the rear luggage compartment lid identifies the Black Edition as much as the embossed Black Edition model designation on the side of the fabric hood. The roll-over bars are painted in black, together with the rear side air intake grilles and the twin tailpipe of the exhaust system.

The black theme of the exterior is continued inside. The stainless steel door entry guards feature the “Black Edition” model lettering in black. The standard, three-spoke Sport Design steering wheel has a black leather rim. The trim strips of the dashboard and of the gear shift lever or PDK selector are painted in black. The dials on the instrument cluster are black, as are the partial leather seats with the Porsche emblem embossed in the headrests. A bespoke badge on the glove compartment lid further identifies each Black Edition.

Upon request, the Porsche Boxster S Black Edition can be individualised even further with other options. For example, the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) is an option as well as the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and the adaptive sports seats with memory function.

The Porsche Boxster S Black Edition goes on sale in the UK and Ireland from March 2011 and is priced from £47,426.

2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG

The introduction of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission with the “Controlled Efficiency” mode as standard along with a new power steering pump helps to reduce the combined NEDC fuel consumption by about ten percent to 12.0 l/100 km (Estate: 12.3 l/100 km). The output of the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine is unchanged at 336 kW (457 hp) and can be increased to a maximum of 358 kW (487 hp) with the optional AMG Performance package. Agility, grip and ride comfort have been enhanced as a result of numerous measures to optimise the AMG sports suspension.

The new bonnet with its modified powerdomes is now made of aluminium. New clear-lens headlamps emphasise the car’s distinctive, self-confident presence, especially when the optional Intelligent Light System (ILS) is also specified. The wide front wings with the “6.3 AMG” legend and the new 5 twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels which are painted in titanium grey and have a high-sheen finish dominate the side view. Good contact with the road is provided by the wide 235/40 R 18 and 255/35 R 18 tyres at front and rear respectively.

The Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG features eleven new driving assistance systems which are already established in the S-Class flagship range and the trend-setting CLS. These assistance systems use the latest radar, camera and sensor technology and are designed to combat common causes of accidents, such as insufficient distance to the vehicle ahead, drowsiness and darkness. They raise the safety standard of the C-Class to a new level by warning the driver of a hazard, or, if necessary, taking active corrective measures.

2011 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible Indy 500 Pace Car

The 2011 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible is the 22nd Chevrolet chosen to pace “The Greatest Spectacle In Racing®” and the seventh Camaro. Adding to the rich heritage is the fact that 2011 will mark the 100th anniversary of the first Indianapolis 500, as well as the centennial year of Chevrolet.

The pace car, along with the matching festival cars, features a Summit White exterior accented with orange stripes and door graphics. The interior is trimmed in orange leather, including front seat headrests embossed with the Indy 500 logo, along with white door panels and instrument panel trim. The instrument panel trim features extensions of the orange exterior stripes. The color combination is similar to the design used on the 1969 Camaro Indy pace car – replicas of which have become among the most popular Camaros in the collector world.

The Chevrolet Camaro Convertible will be offered in similar model configurations as the Camaro coupe. The standard model will have a 312-horsepower direct injection V-6 engine delivering 29 mpg highway. The SS model will feature the 6.2L V-8 engine producing 426 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission will be standard, with an optional six-speed automatic.

Camaro LT convertible models are offered with a 3.6L direct injection (DI) V-6 that delivers more power through increased efficiency, while maintaining fuel economy and lowering emissions – including a 25-percent drop in cold-start hydrocarbon emissions. It is rated at 312 horsepower (232 kW) and 278 lb.-ft. of torque (370 Nm). Peak fuel economy with the direct injection V-6 is 29 miles per gallon on the highway.
Two 6.2L V-8 engines are offered in Camaro SS models, including the L99 on automatic-equipped vehicles and the LS3 on manual-equipped models. Both engines are derived from the LS3 that debuted on the 2008 Corvette, with an aluminum block (with cast iron cylinder liners) and aluminum cylinder heads. Horsepower for the L99 is 400 (298 kW) and torque is 410 lb.-ft. (556 Nm). The LS3 develops 426 horsepower (318 kW) and 420 lb.-ft. (569 Nm).
The L99 features the fuel-saving Active Fuel Management System, which saves fuel by shutting down half of the engine’s cylinders during certain light-load driving conditions, such as highway cruising.
All Camaro models can be equipped with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The Aisin AY6 six-speed manual is standard with the 3.6L engine, and a Hydra-Matic 6L50 six-speed automatic is optional. A Tremec TR 6060 six-speed manual is standard on the SS, and the Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic is optional.
Chevrolet Camaro convertible is offered in 1LT/2LT (V-6) and 1SS/2SS (V-8) trim packages and priced from $30,000 MSRP (including $850 destination). Nine production exterior colors are available, with tops offered in black or tan. Rear parking assist is standard on all convertible models.

FORD gifts new MUSTANG to its fan with some new features and updates

The reborn 2011 Ford Mustang GT's most obvious competitor (obviously). While the Camaro is certainly a head turner, it's just not that great of an all around performance car. However, despite the 2010 Mustang GT coming out on top in many comparisons against its crosstown rival, one fact is undeniable: When it comes to power, the Camaro SS kicked the Mustang GT's butt up and down the block. Across the drag strip, too. The 6.2-liter LS3-equipped SS (manual only, as automatic Camaros get the weaker L99 motor) produces a screaming 426 horsepower and 420 rumbling pound-feet of torque, enough mojo to embarrass the 2010 Mustang GT's relatively wimpy 4.6-liter V8 with its 315 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. True, the Mustang handled better, rode better, had a much better interior and cost less, but at the end of the day we're talking muscle cars. Gumption matters. Chevy was king. Ford had to act.

The engine of the Ferrari 458 Italia is coupled with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Ferrari 458 Italia emits 320 g/km of CO2 and has a fuel economy of 13.7 l/100 km in a combined cycle. The top speed of the Ferrari 458 Italia is 325 km/h and the car is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds.

2009 Suzuki GSX-R1000

When you’re one of the most popular platforms for superbike road racing success, how do you out-do yourself? In the case of the ultra-victorious Suzuki GSX-R1000, nothing less than a ground-up overhaul was in order. The 2009 Gixxer liter machine underwent such comprehensive redesign (though it looks remarkably similar to ‘08) that Suzuki refers to the update as “a full model change.”

Whether or not this smacks of some rightly deserved aloofness will be up to you: Essentially, Suzuki perceived the task of crafting its new liter-class missile as a challenge in delivering a bike with the performance to exceed “… its biggest rival – the current GSX-R.”

The phrase “total balance” is bandied about routinely in press materials for the new bike. Integral to achieving this target of perfect symbiosis between powerplant and chassis, the 999cc mill is now all-new. Much of the engine’s re-make conforms to the mandate set forth by Suzuki that “close-to-ideal” chassis dimensions are the driving force behind the heavily re-vamped liter bike. A New Engine for a New Gixxer Thou

In addition to fostering chassis development goals, the more compact engine design was also influenced by “increased performance potentials as a base engine for racing competitions.” Gee, wonder if Suzuki wants to keep winning championships?

Here’s a brief look at the myriad changes in the engine:
• Bore and stroke increased to 74.5 mm x 57.3mm (73.4mm x 59.0mm in ‘08). The more over-square (shortened stroke) design equates to slower piston speeds at the unchanged 13,750-rpm rev limiter.
• Piston diameter increased by 1.1mm; longer (0.5mm) connecting rods receive shot-peen treatment for increased strength.
• Compression ration up to 12.8:1 versus 12.5:1 from 2008 model.
• New crankshaft-end lubrication system – first ever on a production 4-cylinder Suzuki – increases lubrication efficiency equating to reduced mechanical losses; the counter-balance shaft diameter reduced by 3mm also reduces mechanical losses.
• Intake port is larger “to realize cylinder-head construction suited to modification for higher revving.” Read: better suited for race tuning
• New camshafts; relocation of cam-angle sensor to middle of camshaft translates into shorter camshaft length equating to a lighter camshaft.
• Ti intake and exhaust valves are both 1mm larger than previous and employ dual springs, rather than a single spring; exh. valve angle is decreased by 0.5 degree to 12.5 degrees.
• New crankcase is now 2-piece instead of 3-piece, and has improved venting; transmission countershaft was repositioned from forward the driveshaft to directly overtop resulting in a reduction of over 2 inches between crank and drive shafts. New 2-piece case design and stacked tranny aid in creation of more compact engine; primary reduction ratio increased a smidge while final reduction ratio decrease a bit, all to better capitalize on improved drive out of corners.
• Slipper-clutch was refined and joined by new one-piece clutch/starter cover that saves a claimed 200 grams; equally as important was the switch from hydraulic to cable-actuated clutch for improved feel, according to Suzuki materials.
• Race-developed radiator is now narrower and lighter; new oil cooler also is narrower and provides better heat dissipation.
• On the fuel-induction front: airbox outlet funnel is now plastic rather than rubber for weight savings, and the air funnel length can be shortened by 10mm for racing applications. Throttle body length is 5mm shorter via a new attachment to the airbox; SRAD (Suzuki’s ram-air system) intake has been repositioned closer to the bike’s centerline for improved intake efficiency. Suzuki’s PAIR (Pulsed-Air) system (pumps clean air into exhaust ports, largely an emissions thing) is now more compact.
• All-new MotoGP-inspired exhaust system uses titanium cans and is claimed to shave 400 grams of unnecessary weight; the stainless-steel under-chamber contains the catalyzer.
• Finally, the new Thousand uses iridium-tip spark plugs (just like its little brother, Gladius), and the ECU was redesigned for weight savings.

A new chassis: the kingpin of GSX-R evolution

In the cutthroat realm of sportbikes, a supremely powerful engine is often the paramount motivator ensuring a good shot at winning championships, both at the track and in the showroom. But making effective use of the impressive horsepower available on current literbikes usually generates a whole new set of challenges.

To that end, Suzuki has crafted a new twin-spar aluminum frame. Of course weight reduction came about, but so did a wheelbase now 10mm shorter. For us in the U.S. that difference looks like this: 55.3 inches vs. 55.7 inches. However, swingarm length increased by 32mm via the reduction in engine length. The objective behind the new swingarm is twofold: retain stability via reduced rear suspension squat, and increase rear tire traction. Rake and trail have increased barely perceptible amounts. Attention given the new engine and new frame might’ve gone unrivaled if it weren’t for the use of Showa Corporation’s big newsmaker, the Big Piston Fork, or more commonly, BPF. The BPF was developed from top-level road racing events over the past few years, and a race-application iteration was used to great success by Suzuki in recent Suzuka 8-Hour events. The BPF is relatively new to production motorcycles: its only other placement thus far is on the 2009 Kawasaki ZX-6R in 41mm flavor, while the Gixxer Thou’s BPF has larger 43mm stanchions.By using a much larger main piston in place of the cartridge system with smaller piston traditionally used in most modern sportbike’s front suspension, a reduction of damping pressure via increased piston surface area/volume is possible. The result is less dive under braking, reduced high-speed compression harshness and overall better feel. Also, eliminating fork internals means weight loss; 720 grams less compared to the ’08 GSX-R1000 front end.

The shock remains mostly unchanged, but shock linkage was altered for greater progressiveness aiding improved traction and is lightened by way of extruded aluminum alloy rather than forged construction. The electronically controlled steering damper received revisions in the form of increased damping force at higher speeds, reduced damping at low speeds, and lost some weight with the now-hollow damper rod.

Spinning at both ends are new, lighter wheels carrying grippy and consistent-wearing Bridgestone BT-016 tires tailored specifically for the new liter-capacity Suzuki. Hauling in the flagship GSX-R from speed is the duty of all-new mono-block radial-mount Tokico calipers pinching new 310mm rotors; the new binder package saves hundreds of grams, naturally.

According to Suzuki staff, claimed wet weight for 2009 is 6 lbs less than last year. Published figures have the 2008 GSX-R1000 scaling in between 473-475 lbs wet.

ike any pretty girl who just shed pounds following a rigorous diet plan, the venerable Suzuki superbike needed a new look. From a distance the 2009 model looks very similar to last year, but closer inspection reveals a new headlamp design followed by a narrower tailsection with redesigned LED taillamps, and a trimmer fuel tank maintains ’08 fuel capacity of 4.6 gallons. Mirrors are updated for improved visibility a la reduced vibration and greater ease-of-adjustment.
Of these styling updates, an all-new instrument panel is likely the most appreciable change. The new clocks prominent alterations include a more visible A-B-C display from S-DMS (Suzuki-Drive Mode Selector) and a new programmable 4-bulb shift light system as opposed to the single shift light from last year. The new shift light system incorporates three yellow bulbs that light sequentially leading to a larger final white light. Adjustable rpm settings for the lights can be made in 250, 500 and 1,000 rpm increments.
While we’re near the subject of S-DMS, the selectable mapping system’s switch has been relocated, from the right clip-on switch gear to a new location on the left switch gear, for less-complicated operation while riding. What was formally the location of S-DMS toggles on the right is now occupied by a switch that toggles through the numerous functions of the new instrument panel. S-DMS access is now comprised of two trigger-style switches, one at the index finger and one at the thumb; both triggers scroll through A-B-C modes.
Wind protection is still good (or as good can be noted on a track), ergos are essentially unaltered and re-styled footpegs remain 3-way adjustable over a 14mm vertical and horizontal range.
Proof in the GSX-R pudding
Circulating “The Big Track” at Willow Springs International Raceway in Rosamond, CA, is where U.S. moto-journos would taste-test the new bike.
Apparent right out of the gate is how potent a mill it is that powers the ground-up revamp of the GSX-R. It seems to pull with unmitigated grunt right off idle, but my seat-o’-the-pants dyno detected a notable ramping up of power around the 7K mark. From that point, all the way to rev-limit, speed builds not only ferociously, but in an exceptionally linear manner. Fueling on this day was flawless with instant throttle response available anywhere.
The salient point in all this talk of the engine is that despite the incredible rate at which power, and subsequently speed, builds, managing it is easier than ever. The new Gixxer Thou’s tremendous torque and wicked acceleration is wonderfully tractable, likely due to chassis updates as well as numerous engine updates aimed at linear powerAs wowed as I was by the engine, the chassis’ user-friendly character also caught my attention early on. From turn-in to turn completion, the bike is compliant and ever-obedient, as it rolls easily from left to right. Alterations in trajectory, or say, increasing lean angle, are always predictable. And even if the bike does get out of shape, bringing it back in-line isn’t an exercise in blind faith. Tell the bike where you need it to be and it’ll be there, probably quicker than you anticipate. I couldn’t help but be left with the impression that the Suzuki’s handling is just as linear as is its power.

Once preload in the BPF fork was backed out a couple turns from initial settings for my 155 -lb frame, the front-end did an excellent job of telegraphing everything that was happening. Indeed, front-end dive under braking is minimal and good stability is a hallmark of the new Suzi. The new mono-block brake calipers provide heaps of easily modulated power, making for a perfect fit in the overall GSX-R1000 package.
Though we had plenty of lap time, the race track doesn’t always exhibit real-world conditions, so street environs may reveal issues not perceived at 140 mph. Nevertheless, 2009 GSX-R1000 gave me no significant fault-finding points of interest.The best I can do is remark on the slightly sticky tranny that would, on occasion, resist high-speed/high-rpm clutchless upshifts. In reality, this minute trouble is probably more a function of a brand new, and thusly stiff, gearbox more than it is some inherent woe, as Suzuki transmissions are typically excellent. The only other niggle is that the point of engagement on the new cable-actuated clutch seems to happen rather early in lever release. No big deal.

We’ll get more seat time on this overhauled Suzuki in our annual literbike battle, but for now it seems the goal of making the 2009 GSX-R1000 a bike with “total balance” has largely been realized.
Bikes are making their way to dealers now. They’ll come in Black/Matte Black, Red/Black (the red is really more Maroon), and of course traditional GSX-R Blue/White, all at the MSRP of $12,899.

2011 Aprilia RSV4

The term high tech has never had a more suitable subject to describe outside of NASA than the Aprilia RSV4 Factory APRC SE. Traction control, launch control, wheelie control, triple ride-by-wire riding modes, quick shifter, and its even got blinkers incorporated into its mirrors! The RSV4 Factory APRC is what legends are made of.

Aprilia, by offering the APRC technology to a mainstream audience, has the recipe to shatter everything that stands in its way in 2011. You’ve got to love Aprilia’s attitude of daring to fail to succeed.

It takes guts to bring along a bike such as the RS3 Cube MotoGP bike using ride-by-wire as the first manufacturer to do so in MotoGP. It failed; Aprilia packed up its GP ambitions, rebooted its computers and came back stronger than ever in World Superbike with the RSV4 Factory and Max Biaggi.Aprilia developed a three-cylinder Cube from scratch then binned it. Then it went about building a new V-Twin, binned it, and finally chose a V-4. It built the V-4 from scratch in-house and launched it as quickly as it could with complications, but at the same time with race wins. Finally in 2010 Aprilia won the world superbike championship with BiaggiHaving followed this bike from the pre-concept stage to reality, I’m delighted to be able to give unconditional praise.

The RSV4 Factory APRC can be called a motorcycling virtuoso in the technical area. A combined (but competitive) effort from Aprilia,BMW and Ducati has bloodied the Japanese noses seriously in the last couple of years. Aprilia and Ducati have done it on the World Superbike circuits and BMW on the sales charts.

Now, let me tell you how good this bike is. On my very first lap the Aprilia technicians force-fed us level eight on the traction control. I thought; “how dull they are ruining my fun like this!” However they were right and I was wrong as this was the perfect way for me to ride the tightest Jerez corners using first gear, full throttle and just let the traction control automate me through the corners.

Without traction control such behaviour on your warm-up lap would end in tears guaranteed. After that I simply used the Mana (absolutely no reference whatsoever to anything else on that bike I promise) switch gear using the minus button to reach lower levels on the traction control or the plus button to go back up. A rider’s left index finger toggles the minus button, and a left thumb for the plus button which is intuitive, all while on the moveThere’s no sound or chugging or anything when the traction control kicks in. I could feel when the rear tire slipped but trusted the ATC instantly. The amount of rear wheelspin allowed is pre-determined depending on which TC level you choose. I worked my way all the way down to level one but I did a whole session using level four which suited me just fine.

Each of us had five sessions on the bike of which the first was to test traction control alone, second session to test wheelie control with traction control, third session to test launch control and the two last sessions to freely explore. That’s nearly two full hours of hardcore undiluted adrenaline pumping action.

Aprilia’s wheelie control is highly sophisticated and not only stops wheelies from happening between low-gear corners but it knows how much it should allow and how to land them soft to avoid upsetting the handling. Don’t you tell me that’s not very clever! The physicality of trying to curb a wheelie while racing is immense. Riders have to use their upper bodies like athletes forcing weight forward while accelerating and withstanding G-forces and wind resistance. Aprilia have with the AWC taken that physicality away, allowing the rider to concentrate on pinning the throttle.

The AWC has three levels to choose from, where I suspect level one is the only race one. Some front wheel lift is always allowed because as long as the wheelie isn’t too high you can still be at maximum acceleration levels. What’s really good about this from a racer’s perspective is to keep that front down between really quick directional changes in low gears while keeping the throttle wide open. A small wheelie is then accepted while you pin it and turn the bike over from side to side, landing it just in time to steer out of the next corner. And landing it smoothly to avoid upsetting the front more than the steering damper can handle. There’s gyrometer wizardry involved here, and not only sensors between the two wheelsHow does it work? Two gyrometers and two accelerometers are at the ECU’s disposal for any data it may need for the various systems. Anything a motorcycle can do whether it is vertically or horizontally the ECU is aware. So when we stupid people do something wrong with the throttle in the wrong place the system saves us from ourselves. Through the ride-by-wire system the ECU also knows the throttle position and based on pre-calculated algorithms based on a variety of conditions (you choose the levels, computer performs to that level).

2011 Kawasaki ZX-10R

Although seven years have elapsed since Kawasaki introduced its first modern superbike of liter-size displacement, it seems like only a couple of years that the ZX-10R first hit racetracks and streets.

Even harder to fathom – especially in light of the rapid progression of product development in the literbike wars – is the fact that the all-new 2011 kawasaki ZX-10R is the first ground-up redesign of the master assassin since the ZX’s introduction in 2004.

This iteration of the Zed-X received such an overhaul this go ’round, during the 2011 model’s recent press introduction at the hilly Road Atlanta race circuit in Braselton, Ga., Kawasaki’s Karl Edmondson cautioned the moto media to “forget everything about previous ZX-10R models.”From top to bottom, almost nothing went untouched in the new 10R’s engine. About the only thing retained from the previous 10R is its bore and stroke. Check out Ed-in-Chief Duke’s exhaustive technical preview for full details.

Camshafts are now made from chromoly steel rather than cast iron. A soft-nitriding treatment that Kawi revised for the new camshafts reduces deflection (an “untruing” if you will, of the straightness of the camshaft) during the metal hardening process by upwards of 30-40%, according to Kawi. Cam lift and valve overlap are increased as part of the update – a move generally used to increase peak power.

All this rather dry talk of cams gives us some early insight to how intent Kawasaki is about rebirthing the 10R’s total package.

Valve tappets are designed to work with the new high-lift cams, and the intake valves’ diameters are increased to 31mm from 30mm for improved cylinder-filling efficiency. The exhaust valves (in the head) are the same size, but stronger valve springs are employed all ’round.

Cylinder intakes have increased volume and are hand-ported, while, according to Kawasaki's Rob Taylor, the exhaust ports are redesigned to reduce engine braking and allow the rider better control over the bike via more precise throttle control. Piston skirt size was minimized for the sake of reducing engine noise. Use of “dummy” heads bolted in place during cylinder boring means a more accurate machining processA new instrument cluster for the ZX rivals the complexity of Ducati’s MotoGP-derived instruments, and it’s much prettier, too!

A prominent LED (not lesser-contrast LCD) bar-graph tachometer doubles as a programmable shift light that can pulse or flash at a couple different rates of your choosing and will change from yellow to red at the shift point. Also, the tachometer LEDs are colored rather than just backlit with color, and you can adjust LED intensity or allow the ambient light sensor on the dash to adjust them automaticallyThe remainder of the instrument panel is all LCD and is switchable between standard mode and race mode. Standard mode features mph/kph as the central figure, with gear position to the right and the current selections of power mode and S-KTRC to the right of that. Basic data, like trip meters and engine temp, are also displayed.

In Race mode, gear position takes center stage where road speed is normally displayed; the mph display takes the clock’s position in the lower right, and the odometer becomes a lap timer.

With TC enabled, and regardless of which view you have the instrument set, a graduated bar graph at the bottom center of the screen indicates TC activation. No bars displayed, naturally, means traction control isn’t currently in play. But when it does activate, the segmented bar graph will increase and decrease as an indicator of how much S-KTRC is working to prevent you and your new bike from wadding up.

The specialists have replaced the series production front spoiler on the front axle with an in-house development that features two integrated LED day lamps. At the heart of the new Lexus RX models are two improved powertrains. Entering its second generation, the Lexus RX 450h will feature an enhanced Lexus Hybrid Drive system with a 3.5-liter V6 gas engine that runs on a highly efficient Atkinson cycle.
