Amazon started buying books and textbooks via the Amazon Book Trade In program in July of 2011. Over the 9 years, the program was very successful, millions of books and textbooks were traded in. In the early years – the program was very aggressive on price – especially the textbook trade in component. Amazon was able to offer more than other buyback companies because it paid with Amazon Giftcards. Amazon also saw the Textbook trade in program as a great way to entice students into the Amazon Student Prime program.

The way the program worked was 3rd party vendors would load a “trade in guide” to the site. Amazon then would inspect the books and put them into the vendors FBA account.

Wondering where the Amazon Book Trade In program went? No you are not crazy – its gone….

On April 1st, 2020 Amazon closed its book trade in Program. No, it was not an Aprils fools joke – Amazon stopped purchasing Textbooks on April 1st, 2020. Although Amazon made no announcement on why they decided to shut down the program, we think the closure is most likely related to

Counterfeit Textbooks – Textbook Publishers have sued many of Amazon Vendors that participated in the program and found that the Trade In Program was a source of Counterfeits.

Textbook Rentals – With more Textbooks Rentals there is less Textbook Trade In – and Amazon has been really pushing Textbook Rentals and has acquired a massive textbook inventory.

Does Amazon still buy back books?

No – Amazon closed it’s Book Trade in program as of April 1, 2020.

Where can I sell books now that Amazon Textbook Trade-In has closed

Where can you sell textbooks today? Our first choice would be Cash4Books.net – we have been buying textbooks since 2004. Besides us – there are about a dozen other sites that buy textbooks online.

The good news – even with Amazon Book Trade-In closed – you can still sell your books without leaving your house. The benefit of selling to a company like Cash4books over the Amazon Book Trade:

We buy more non-textbooks – Amazons trade in catalog was typically limited to under 100,000 titles – we buy over 1 million

Amazon Only paid with Amazon gift cards – while we admit Amazon Gift cards are almost like cash – Cash is still better : )

Recommerce is also sometimes referred to as “reverse commerce”, “buyback”, “trade in”, “return management”, “reverse logistics”, or “reverse supply chain”. In some contexts, it refers to product returns, but many business models now use recommerce as their main supply chain to acquire used or new products from customers.

I started Cash4Books in 2004, as a recommerce business for buying and selling used books. And, it eventually became focused on college textbooks as the business evolved. Over the course of those 13 years, I’ve learned some valuable lessons and best practices on how to run a successful recommerce business.

Know your margins. You can base your margins off of a percentage, or in dollars per item. For us, we have found it useful to use a percentage margin for low dollar books and then switch to a flat margin for high dollar books. Switching to a flat margin makes us more competitive on our offer prices in the high-end space.

Know your shipping costs. Shipping is our #1 expense. We pay the shipping in and shipping out, so we must build this into our cost structure.

Know all of your variable costs that contribute to your cost of goods sold (COGS). We can up with the acronym “FLOMBIC” for our variable costs, and then taught that to all of our employees. It stands for Fees, Labor, Outbound-shipping, Material-cost, Book-cost, Inbound-shipping, and Credits.

Understand that you will have marketing spend on both your supply chain and your sales chain. Recommerce businesses are somewhat unique in the fact that we have to spend marketing dollars to get a reliable supply of product. Then we have to spend more marketing dollars to sell that product on the other side of the business model.

Know your overhead cost (fixed cost). The way I think about financials is that I’m selling products that have a certain amount of gross profit after my variable cost (COGS). My gross profit must be used to cover my fixed costs (overhead) each month. By using a percentage calculator, I know exactly what my overhead runs every month. So, I have a target of how much gross profit I need to hit each month to cover my overhead. If I have gross profit leftover have paying my overhead, then that’s called net profit. Our largest overhead cost is payroll and benefits.

Invest in automated software and systems. To keep efficiency and productivity high, we invest heavily in software systems. This includes a number of cloud based software platforms, databases, and a mixture of 3rd party software with our own. The devil is in the details on software platforms. Something as simple as making it so that warehouse workers do not have to touch the mouse can add significant improvements in productivity.

Have a QA and test plan. One of the reasons why we failed at TechTwice is because we did not fully understand what it would take to fully test our products. We developed a 20 point testing checklist, but it was not sufficient. And, in the end, this is one of the key reasons we shut down the business.

Use multiple supply chains, and multiple sales channels, whenever possible. When we first started the business, we had one supplier and one sales channel. But, the most success we’ve had has been when we’ve been able to expand our supply chain through partners and relationships and also open multiple sales channels (some retail and some wholesale). And vise versa, we’ve had our biggest struggles and pain points when we’ve been constrained to one supplier or one sales channel.

Have fun! If you don’t enjoy the recommerce business, then do something else! It’s certainly not for everyone.

Last, but not least, take care of your customers. We obsess about our online feedback ratings and reviews. Maintaining great customer relationships is absolutely critical to success.

It may be July, but it’s not too late to book a great summer getaway! From camping to house trades to staycation tours and summer skiing, we’ve picked some of the best last-minute ways to enjoy summer, all while keeping costs in check.

If you haven’t already, now is the time to sell your textbooks from last term. Not only will you have extra cash to enjoy your vacation, you won’t have to worry about trading in those books when the new school year starts.

It’s all about flexibility and a go-with-the-flow mentality to snag an under the wire, before summer ends escape. No matter where you’re spending summer vacation there is always room for more fun!

1. Camping

From simply pitching a tent to upping your game by canoe camping or backpacking, camping is a great way to immerse yourself in nature and get away from it all. While prime campsites are most likely booked through the rest of summer, weekdays and off-the-beaten-path campgrounds will give you a better chance for available spots.

2. Houseboat

All throughout the country are hidden lakes and reservoirs where you can rent houseboats. Gather a group of friends and prepare for a few days of fun and sun surrounded by water. Call around to find last-minute cancellations that rental companies are trying to fill.

3. House Trade

As a college student, you most likely have made friends all over the country — possibly even all over the world! A house or room swap is a creative way to see another city and not pay for lodging. While there are companies dedicated to setting up home exchanges, trading with friends or friends’ roommates is an easy way to do it, especially last-minute.

House swaps are a great way to save money on travel expenses.

4. Bed-and-Breakfast

Not just for mom and dad, bed-and-breakfasts run the gamut from being quaint and old-fashioned to modern and high-tech. Nestled in neighborhoods, cities, and secluded locales, B&Bs are usually converted houses, mansions, castles, even firehouses, that offer home-cooked breakfasts with your stay. Again, weekdays and cancellations will be in your favor here.

5. Amusement Park Tour

If you’re staying put no matter what this summer, create do-it-yourself tours close to home. Round up some friends or family and map out a plan to visit all the amusement parks, water parks, or even taco trucks in the area. You could choose to cram them into one week or spread them out to extend the staycation.

6. Ski Resort

Summer is an incredible time to enjoy ski and snowboard resorts. Many of them turn into an adventurer’s playground with lift-accessed mountain biking, crazy slides, gorgeous resort pools, hiking, zip lining, and more. In some cases there is still snow, so bring your skis and boards! Room rates are significantly lower than during the prime season and you’ll get to enjoy all the amenities, including hotel swimming pools, hot tubs, restaurants, and scenery.

In the summer, ski resorts turn into a playground of outdoor adventure.
