Flip the top over once it feels fairly solid. It’s time to actually bring your DIY scaffold board table to life by attaching the legs.

Once clamped, let the glue dry for 24-48 hours. Remove excess glue and fit slotted braces across the underside for strength while allowing for slight wood movement.
• Mechanical Join (No Glue): Use slotted or fixed braces alone to hold the boards together. This approach leaves room for a small amount of movement as the boards settle indoors from their original 15-20% moisture level to around 8-12%. You may see tiny gaps appear later, but it keeps the look authentic to reclaimed wood.

Step 3) Sanding/Planing

Sand or plane the entire surface flat once the boards are joined. Start with a coarse grit (80-100) to even out the joins, then move up to 180-240 for a smooth finish. You can make a perfectly level tabletop with a surface planer, but an orbital sander will work just fine if not.

Today we're talking to Karen of @beautifulhomesinthenorth about her recent kitchen redesign featuring our Knurl Pull Handles. Read on for interior design tips as we talk everything from colour scheme, mood boarding and the importance of hardware in the home.

Hi Karen! What was the initial spark of inspiration behind your space?

I love green so it was just a case of finding the right green tone for the kitchen doors, while the plum VP7 flowerpot pendants were on my moodboard from the start. After prevaricating between a more traditional shaker style or more contemporary (and easier to clean) flat slab doors, I went for the latter. They suit the Mid Century aesthetic I’m drawn towards, even though I live in a Victorian cottage! Walnut wood slats give it a Japandi twist and add some warmth, while the terrazzo effect porcelain floor tiles have an industrial look and hide dirt very well.

Kitchens are primarily functional spaces… did you come up against any challenges along the way? How did you overcome them?

We had a supporting wall knocked down between the kitchen and dining room to make it open-plan, so the key challenge was creating a new layout that flowed, was well balanced and fitted in everything we wanted.

After getting a few designs and quotes (as well as creating my own design on DIY Kitchens’ online planner) I chose an independent company called Alexandra Interiors in Ashington, Northumberland as their design was different to all the others. 

They made use of the dead space on one side of the room, previously a thoroughfare by the side door with a small radiator on the wall. Now it houses floor-to-ceiling half-depth cupboards that hold tonnes of storage including all our food, glassware and even a utility cupboard for taller items. 

Adding a recessed shelf at eye level, with LED strip back-lighting, has ensured it doesn’t overpower the space and gives me some display space. It works perfectly both on a practical and aesthetic level. The opposite wall features a sink beneath the window, a dishwasher, pull-out bins and washing machine, flanked by a floor-to-ceiling double oven unit and fridge freezer on either side. In the middle is a narrow but long Island, with deep drawers for all our crockery, cookware, pans, cutlery etc, and a Bora downdraft extractor hob. This meant we could have nice lighting above the island rather than an ugly extractor. 

Amazing, what do you love most about what you've designed?

A few things! They are...

• There are no corner cupboards. The designer really listened when I said I hated them!
• All appliances are integral so the design looks sleek and streamlined - an important consideration when it’s open-plan.
• The microwave is hidden away in the cupboard above the double oven - the height of the double oven was lowered slightly so both the microwave and ovens are easy to reach.
• The dishwasher is perfectly placed to unload crockery into the drawers opposite.
• The pull-out bins are deep so you’re not having to empty them every other day, and are perfectly positioned between the sink and dishwasher. 
• Strangely, even though there is more cabinetry than before, the space feels so much bigger.
• There was room under the Bora hob to have a spice drawer.
• We were able to have bespoke units to the ceiling - no dust gathering and it just looks so much neater.
• The end set of drawers on the island are shorter so we could have an overhang on two sides for a sociable breakfast bar.
• The dining area feels very open and spacious. In previous designs I had a tall cupboard on either side, but the designer said it would feel too busy and I think they were absolutely right!

Tell us about the importance of handles in a kitchen.

The handles were very important. I knew I wanted black, as it would look more contemporary and stand out well against the green to make a statement. The knurled finish adds a nice texture too. 

Although I did consider brass, I feel black is so much easier to match to other fittings such as the tap, sockets, switches and lighting. They also complimented my black window frames. For practical reasons, I wanted something sturdy and easy to grab, so the pull handles were ideal. I chose six 300mm handles for the 800mm wide island drawers, and 18 180mm handles for all the cupboards. 

While discreet handles can look very stylish, on a day-to-day basis I prefer something larger, especially for the fridge freezer and dishwasher, where ease of use is so important. The handles are beautiful and the kitchen fitter was very complementary about the quality. 

We absolutely love the colour scheme you landed on. How did you decide on bringing these tones together and what advice do you have for others?

Thank you! We spent a long time choosing the colour scheme. Making a physical mood board rather than a digital moodboard really helps - so collect as many samples as you can. We were able to take several different green door samples and wood slats home to see what worked best in the east facing light. Balance is really important - since we wanted wood slats on the island, shelf recess and dining wall, we knew we couldn’t have wood or LVT on the floor as it would be wood overkill! Instead we felt a large speckled taupe floor tile would pull everything together.

The quartz worktops also have a brown vein that works with the flooring. I’d fallen in love with the plum pendants right from the start and I nearly went for a plum coloured island but in the end I settled for more pops of plum in the artwork and accessories. I even painted a few existing vases and a chair with a sample pot of Farrow & Ball’s Preference Red, which is a close match for the pendant colour. I’d always suggest choosing the wall paint colour last rather than first - we went for Taupe 02 by Lick after getting about 8 different samples - as there’s always going to be a shade that will work.

As a stylist, bringing a vision of a space to life can be a long and challenging process - what motivates you to see it through? 

There’s always a point where you get decision fatigue but if you can plan as much as possible before any building work starts, you’ll be in a much better position. We probably spent around 4 years thinking about it on and off, while we saved up. A good kitchen designer is worth their weight in gold too, especially one who liaises with your builder and ensures everything runs smoothly. Once the plans were nailed and I could see the 3D renders, I knew it was going to look great and that really motivated me to keep going. 

And finally, what projects are you working on in 2026?

I’ve got a snag list for just about every room! But I’d also like to re-paint my living room as I feel like we haven’t quite nailed that space yet. It’s a fairly dark room with two exposed stone walls so I’m debating whether to lean into the darkness and go for Preference Red on the walls for a really cosy feel. I keep seeing plum colours everywhere - on Instagram, in clothes shops and even on the kitchen in The Traitors - so it’s seeped into my subconscious!

You’ll find instructions online for putting up a shelf with adhesive wall strips or tension rods. But what you gain in convenience you lose in strength. Installing a secure shelf requires proper mounting. That means it must be affixed to masonry or a wall stud with screws. 

Do You Need Nails?

Can you put a shelf up without nails? Yes - in fact, you should never use nails to put up a shelf bracket. Nails are prone to pulling out under tension. They will slowly wriggle loose, causing your shelf to fall unexpectedly. Use nails to hang photos and light paintings, not shelves.

Pilot holes provide space for your screws to enter. This prevents wood studs from splitting and masonry or brick from cracking. Pilot holes support anchors to prevent plasterboard damage and they also guarantee that your screw enters straight.

How to Put Up a Shelf By Yourself: Step-by-Step Guide to Putting Up a Shelf

Many of our customers worry that they’re not capable of putting up a shelf. They fear the shelf will be crooked or that they will damage their wall. Don’t worry - we’ll show you every step of how to put up a shelf by yourself.

Envision How You Want Your Shelf to Look

Generally, you should hang a wall shelf between 4 and 5 ft from the floor. You can use a single shelf as a focal point. Or you can use multiple shelves on an otherwise blank wall.

Choose a Wall and the Right Fixing

Will you be mounting your shelf on a solid wall made of brick or block? Or do you want to put it on a stud partition wall covered with plasterboard? If you’re not sure, knock on the wall. A solid wall sounds dense. A plasterboard wall sounds hollow. 

Rawlplugs, also called wall plugs, expand when screwed into a solid wall. They provide a powerful grip that fixes your shelf in place. You must use rawlplugs to mount shelves on a masonry wall. 

If hanging on a stud / plasterboard wall, we highly recommend screwing both shelf brackets directly into the wooden studs. Use a stud finder for the strongest hold. If you must screw one bracket directly into plasterboard, use a spring toggle or butterfly anchor for fixing, and only place lightweight items on the shelf. 

Be Sure to Check for Pipes or Cables

Your stud detector won’t just help you find vertical studs for bracket mounting. It will also help you spot pipes, cables, and live electric wires. You should purchase a proper detector, as cheaper models will give you unreliable readings. 

Calibrate the device against a clear part of the wall, then move it slowly across the wall horizontally or vertically. Place a pencil mark on each area where the detector lights up. Scan a second or third time to make sure before drilling.

Mark Where the Shelf Brackets Should Go

Mark the planned location of each bracket using a pencil or masking tape. Ensure the bracket locations line up with the market wall studs if you are installing your brackets on plasterboard.

Measure the distance between the brackets. The shelf must fit properly and be correctly centred. 

Use a spirit level to make sure your planned bracket locations are along a straight, level line. Place your level at the desired height. Draw a perfectly horizontal line to use as a bracket guide. Mark the top screw hole of one bracket first, then use that point as a guide for the other holes.

Drill Guide Holes in the Wall

You must drill guide holes, also called pilot holes, before putting up a shelf. A screw’s threads act like a wedge when you drive a screw directly into the wood. A pilot hole creates a clear path. The screw threads can grip the wood without splitting the wood.

Guide holes make it easier to drive the screw, which can save wear on your drill bits. And a pilot hole ensures that your screw goes in straight and in the location you marked. You’ll need a masonry drill bit if you’re installing on a solid wall. You may also need to use your drill’s hammer setting.

Insert Wall Plugs (if Applicable)

You’ll need rawlplugs if you’re installing shelf brackets on masonry or brick walls. Tap gently with a rubber mallet to ensure the plug is secure within the pilot hole. 

You can use a wall plug to affix your shelf bracket more securely to plasterboard if you can’t find a stud. But we advise against it. Always affix each shelf bracket to a wooden stud when you’re putting shelves on a plasterboard wall. 

Screw the Brackets in Place Using a Screwdriver

Screw the first bracket to the wall using a drill or electric screwdriver. Check your second bracket to confirm it is level with the first. Then screw the second bracket to the wall. 

Double-check that each bracket is securely affixed. There should be no give or wriggle when you tug firmly.

Place the Shelf on the Brackets

Place the shelf on the brackets and ensure it is centred and positioned properly. Mark each mounting hole with a pencil. 

Using a drill bit slightly smaller than your screws, drill shallow pilot holes at each marked location. Be careful to use screws that are shorter than the shelf thickness, and don’t drill your guide holes through the wood.

Do Final Checks for Stability and Levelness

Make a final test with your spirit level to ensure your shelf is level. Check to see that it is level both side-to-side and front-to-back. Make any necessary adjustments and tighten any loose screws. Cheers! You’ve succeeded at putting up a shelf!

Distribute your heaviest shelf items close to the brackets where the support is strongest. Avoid placing your heaviest items in the middle. This can cause your shelf to sag over time.

A shelf bracket screwed into a wall stud or masonry can hold considerably more weight than one that is simply affixed with heavy-duty drywall anchors. Solid hardwood shelves are stronger and less prone to sagging than MDF or particleboard shelves. 

Consider adding a third or fourth bracket to longer shelves or shelves that hold heavy items. Extra brackets prevent sagging and can dramatically increase your shelf’s overall weight capacity.

How to Finish Wood Furniture: Tips on Self-Finishing Wood Furniture Legs

You may get nervous at the thought of finishing wood furniture. But the process is easy when you follow the proper steps! 

Here’s how to finish wood furniture in six easy steps.

Step 1: Sanding the Surface

You must properly prepare the wood surface to get a good finish. Sanding removes imperfections and prepares the wood to accept a finish. See our guide on how to sand furniture legs for more sanding tips.

Start with 120-grit medium sandpaper. Move up to finer grits and finish with a 180 to 220-grit fine sandpaper. You’re done when the wood feels perfectly smooth, and further sanding doesn’t make it feel smoother.

Step 2: Clean the Wood

Leftover dust can result in a bumpy, uneven finish. Clean the wood surface using a vacuum with a brush attachment. Then wipe the wood down with a tack cloth or a rag lightly dampened with mineral spirits. 

Step 3: Choose Your Finish

Penetrating finishes soak deep into the wood to beautify and strengthen it. Some common penetrating finishes include tung oil, linseed oil, and Danish oil. 

Surface finishes create a film atop the wood. Polyurethane, lacquer, and varnish are popular surface finishes. 

Hardwax finishes give you the best of both worlds. They combine wax for a thin but strong surface shield and oils for penetration deep into the wood. Like we said earlier, we use hardwax oil on our finished table legs.

Step 4: Apply the Finish

This step depends on the type of finish you choose for your project. Oil finishes are typically applied with a clean rag, while surface finishes require a paint brush or sprayer. Here are more detailed instructions regardless of your chosen method.

Oil Finish

Soak the wood well with the oil finish and let it set for about 10-15 minutes. Most of it will soak in. Wipe off any remaining excess oil, then let the oil cure for 24-48 hours.

Sand the finish lightly with 320-grit sandpaper before applying a second coat. Multiple coats take time, but will give your wood a shiny, satiny sheen.

Surface Finish

Don’t use cheap brushes for your surface finish. They leave unattractive thin spots. Use a proper brush or sprayer. Also, be sure to stir your finish thoroughly before application. 

We recommend a minimum of two coats, but more may be necessary to get the desired sheen. Sand with a 320-grit sandpaper between coats to remove imperfections and help the coats bond together. 

Step 5: Buff or Seal (If Necessary)

A final buffing gives your furniture a satiny smooth feel and a warm shine. It removes bubbles and imperfections and levels the finish. You can use a buffing pad or a soft towel. Buff firmly but not too hard. You want to perfect the finish, not damage it.

Furniture wax provides additional protection and adds a warm glow. Rub on a thin coat and let it set. Then buff it until the coating is even.

How to Measure for the Correct Leg Height

Decide on the total finished height you want for your table. Take tabletop thickness into account. If you attach our 71cm table legs to a 3cm thick tabletop, the total height of your table will be 74cm. With our 86cm counter-height table legs, the table would be 89cm high.  

It’s best to have about 25cm to 30cm  of space between the top of the chair seat and the tabletop’s underside. Measure your chairs to determine their seat height and factor those decisions in when choosing your table legs. 

Factoring in Tabletop Thickness and Overhang

A table with too much overhang can become unstable and prone to tipping if someone sits or leans on the edge. Too little overhang can make a table look "stubby," while too much can make it top-heavy and precarious.

For a standard four-legged table, place the legs about 5cm in from the edges. This keeps your table in place while hiding the mounting hardware. 

With our industrial box section legs which come in sets of two to place at each end of your table, you can leave a 35cm to 50cm overhang at each end if you want to be able to sit at the ends of the table. You can even have more of an overhang if you’d like, as long as the overhang isn’t over 25% of the full length of the table. These legs come in two width options. The standard 58cm wide option will be good for tables that are up to 120cm wide, while the 78cm wide option will be good for tables that are up to 150cm wide.

Place the threaded cap fixings between the hook and the screws before screwing in. The screw cap will then screw onto the cap fixing to cover the screw head.

Line the holes in the J hook up with your screw marks. Then do the following:

• Wooden surface: Drive the screw directly in with a drill or electric screwdriver on a low-torque setting. Use the 15 mm screw for a wooden surface of 11 mm or less. Use the 30 mm screw if the surface is greater than 31 mm thick. 
• Drywall: Screw the 30 mm screws directly into the plugs. 
• Masonry:  Screw the 30 mm screws directly into the plugs.

The hook should sit flush against the wall when you are completed. Be careful not to overtighten the screw, as that can strip the hole. Attach the screw cap to the cap fixings.

Be careful not to overtighten screws when you're screwing into wood as this can strip the hole and lead to the screw slipping out over time.

Hi Ryan... Thanks for chatting to us. Firstly, we LOVE the desk you've created, from the stunning top to the use of our Oak legs! Can you tell us where you started and then how the making process evolved? 

Thanks so much. It all started as the desks I was looking at were just far too expensive, I needed a new project so thought "I can make that..." (having never built anything before, so this was blind confidence).

Firstly I managed to source a beautiful piece of marble from Facebook Marketplace, it was once a hearth from a fireplace which I paid just £20 for. This created the desk top. From there I built a frame for it to sit on out of plywood, clad the frame in moulding and stained in a rich, warm teak colour.

The legs were the final piece of the puzzle; I had so many different ideas. I knew they needed to hold the weight of the marble but also look good. When I came across the Oak Legs from The Hairpin Leg Co I just knew they were the one. They have such a beautiful shape and are solid which was perfect for holding the weight of the desk top.

The desk is such a strong, bold, characterful piece. What design inspirations did your draw upon?  

I'm inspired by the likes of The Hoxton Hotels, Gleneages Townhouse and Soho House/Home and their use of gorgeous materials like marbles and beautiful fluted woods. 

Marble is such an impressive material, and I used the wood moulding to create a ribbed effect which I think compliments perfectly. 

On that note, what's your favourite period of design and how does this show up in your home? 

There's a lot of mid century influence in my home - I think that period offered such innovative and timeless design and has had such a powerful influence even in design today.

Over the last 4 years we have curated mid century icons (like the G Plan Astro Coffee Table, teak sideboards etc) and paired them with some more modern day pieces. There's also a heavy Nordic and Scandinavian influence throughout.

Your home is so uniquely you. Do you have any advice for anyone wanting to make their home more bespoke? 

I would say to not be afraid to try making something yourself if the thing you want either doesn't exist or is too expensive. I have never made anything like the desk before and now it's something I'm most proud of, and very personal to me, nobody else has one!

Also, fill your home with the things you love, whether that's a colour, fabric, material or a piece of artwork. 

And finally, your desk is full of gorgeous trinkets. Which is your favourite? 

I'm having a real burl wood moment right now, so I would say the burl pen holder. It is completely unnecessary as I'm paperless, but it looks the part. Closely followed by the HK Living clock. I love adorning my sideboard, shelves etc with trinkets, so naturally the desk had to have the same treatment.

Firstly, we love the dressing room you've created! Can you tell us the inspiration  behind it all?

Thank you- I love it too! It’s a tiny space (essentially a walk- through) between the master bedroom and the en -suite. 

We had the vision early on in our build to use it as a dressing room, so we set the walls at the correct distance for some Ikea Pax wardrobes to avoid the cost of bespoke cabinetry. The space below the roof light was chosen for my dressing table/office space because of the natural light that floods in. I wanted the space to feel calming and ‘grown up’ so I chose a neutral palette. The simple design of the Hairpin desk is the perfect fit with its exposed edge and crisp lines while the wall mural with its muted greens is the ideal backdrop; we have similar trees surrounding the house so it felt like everything fell into place!

How was the experience of building your own furniture? Did it match your expectations or throw in any surprises? Do you have any tips for first-time DIY'ers?

It was an absolute dream. The Hairpin Co have thought of everything to make the process easy from pre drilled holes in EXACTLY the right places and good quality screws that are up to the job. All you really need is a screwdriver! It’s the perfect project for anyone new to DIY because it’ll build your confidence – the first thing a novice DIY-er needs is a ‘Can Do’ attitude! I’d also recommend a simple tool kit, an electric screwdriver and a lazer level… and you’ll be off!

Your home gives a serene, sustainable feel. Can you talk us through how you approach home design? What aspects are important to you when creating a space?

I’m glad you feel that because that was our aim – thank you!

I’m a firm believer in a ‘fabric first’ approach to building & design which means focusing on the build ‘envelope’ – orientation, high levels of insulation, airtightness, high performance glazing etc. If you get those correct your chosen renewable energy sources can work in harmony with those choices.

Next, I consider other large purchases like flooring & lighting; these can’t be changed easily so I recommend investing the most you can afford here.

Only then do I consider final finishes such as colour palettes, furniture & accessories. I like to outline how each space will be used and make a list of non-negotiables – you can refer back to this regularly when things become overwhelming or when the budget gets out of hand, it really helps to refocus you.

I enjoy being led by the surroundings too, whether you’re in the countryside, in a town or by the sea you can include a nod to these without going OTT- the best interiors are subtle, they work because they look effortless but in fact a great deal of consideration is behind them! 

And finally, create a home for YOU, not for the latest trend. Inject your personality by bringing in trinkets collected on holiday, family photos and handmade gifts from your children. Pinterest is great for inspiration but the images we see there are rarely the full story and it’s the personal touches you add that will make your heart sing!

We love the self-build focus you have! Can you provide some advice for people wanting to take on their home renovations themselves? What do you wish you knew before you started?

This is our first full house build but my husband and I have done several larger scale renovations previously and thankfully are well equipped with a skill set that lends itself to being able to do a lot of the build ourselves. That said, this build was extremely stressful due to its technical nature and we learnt a lot along the way! 

If you’re planning a renovation, it really pays to be able to tackle elements yourselves, you will save thousands! Be prepared to sacrifice weekends and holidays, even small room upgrades have a tendency to take over your life! 

If you are using trades, don’t be afraid to ask questions and reiterate your own points more than once! It’s better to be crystal clear at every stage than leave grey areas open to interpretation, I'd also recommend following up with an email. 

Remember that everything takes longer and is more expensive than you think so plan a contingency both in hours and pound coins!

And finally, what's next? What projects have you got on the horizon for your home?

What’s next? Another build! I don’t think so but never say never ;-) 

Honestly, we have jobs to do here wherever you look but we made a promise to ourselves to get a bit of balance back now we’ve moved in so things are taking longer and I’m (trying to be) ok with that!

We spent a lot of time in the garden over the summer laying the patio and lawn but with the weather on the turn we will bring our focus back inside to finish the decorating. 

We also have a lot to do in the lounge with cabinetry and a woodburner to install. 

Our next big project is the little cotswold stone weavers cottage at the bottom of our garden – it was built in 1750 so will take on a very different feel to our home but I am brimming with ideas already!
