Handsling Bikes are the proud sponsor of U16 National Champion Fred Wright.

We met Fred down at the Herne Hill velodrome to give his new Handsling Bikes RR1 frame.

The frame is a custom painted version of the RR1, finished in the colours of Velo Club Londres, for whom Fred rides.

Fred won the 2015 National U16 championship road race last Sunday in Paisley in Scotland.

John Veness' Handsling Bikes RR1

My long anticipated new road frameset for 2015 arrived a few days ago, handily in time for the Easter break allowing a couple of days to get it together. I’ve been collecting parts for it since Christmas so am pleased the get the carpet space back from the pile of bags and boxes. Team boss Si Whiten from Handsling bikes has been hard at it for 6 months specifying and importing a wide range of full carbon frames, wheelset and bottle cages.

The framset is the superlight T800 carbon Handsling RR1 frameset consisting of frame, fork and seatpost all in UD carbon custom painted finish. Everything is a hard wearing matt finish. I opted for the minimal paint job (there are several to choose from) with the company colours of blue and orange highlighting the inside of the rear triangle and main tube accents.

The wheels use the fantastic and light weight ‘Chosen’ hubs with the latest in rim design, 40mm deep, 27mm wide with rounded profile that is much less resistant to cross wind deflections and with a basalt breaking surface giving what feels like alloy rim breaking performance. Again these are in the matt UD finish complimenting the frame perfectly. These are optimised to pair with 25mm tyres giving maximum aero-dynamic advantage.

For the build I went for SRAM components again, having used the same Red and Force kit on my previous bike for 3 years without issue. 11-speed is here so I acquired a full Red 22 groupset bit by bit from ebay, experimentally using a 10 speed chainset in the 11 speed setup, this is reported to work in the forums with no issue and are way cheaper than the current 11-speed model. BB86 bottom bracket went in without issue for creak free operation; previously BB30 I found had poor bearing reliability, prone to shell damage after repeated bearing replacement and the dreaded noise once the grease had dried or washed out.

Colour matched in orange the Aerozine integrated headset was a doddle to fit, just drops in with 1’1/4 race on the fork crown and 1’1/8th top race. Holding the forks in place a Superstar components CNC stem upgraded with black titanium bolts. Front end finished off with some Thompson carbon bars, Deda carbon bar tape.

The frame features internal cable routing and electronic groupeset wire drilling, a selection of rubber plugs are supplied to fill the holes depending on which way you choose to go. I’m still keen on cable operation and found the internal routing very easy to do. Just unscrew and remove the cable channel plate on the bottom bracket shell, feed the wires down the down tube and they fall out of the BB ready to feed up to the front mech and along the drive side stay to the rear mech.

I did weigh all the bits before fitting, the most interesting figures come from comparing the claimed frame/fork weights (though for a size 52cm) to the actual delivered item (a 56cm):
Frame: 840 +/- 20, actual = 1038g
Forks: 320 +/- 10, actual = 384g
Seatpost, 350mm long 201g.

The only issue I found with the frame was during setting the rear mech up, I couldn’t get the shifts smooth, this was tracked down to the rear hanger not sitting quite square due to some residual masking tape and paint trapped under the hanger.

Total weight for the build came in at 15.2lb’s without any really fancy components, force cassette not the super light power dome and steel wheel skewers (these will be upgraded at some point). That’s 1.5lb’s less than my previous Trigon, very impressive.

So, once the build was complete I went out for a shake down ride to Richmond park, initial impression was of a lower flatter position than my previous machine. This a good thing for me, coming from mountain biking, my road position has always been too upright. Front end was more stable and very precise in the corners, the ‘S’ bend steep descent in the park felt much safer and controlled than on my previous bike. The wheels were rolling so smoothly, no perception of wind resistance, very little effect from side winds noticed.

I really didn’t want to go back home so headed out to Kingston and on down to roads I know well in the Surrey Hills, reverse loop around box hill, up Ranmore, across to the magnificent Staple lane road and home via Ockham, Chobham, Hampton Court.

The bike was a joy on these roads, surfaces were poor and broken at times, the 25mm rubber rolled so well taking out a lot of the vibration. Swooping down the box hill zig-zags put a huge grin on my face. Climbing was immediate, stiff frame transferring what felt like all my power to the wheels. I have used the wheels in one crit so far on another bike and took to them right away, very smooth and very tight. Braking, very powerful and highly modulated.

I just wanted to ride and ride, unfortunately not being prepared for a long ride I only had half a bottle of water and no gels or bars with me so had to head for home after 2.5 hours having run low on energy levels. It was a fabulous first 100km on the bike, I cant wait to ride it again and get racing, time to remove the winter growth from my legs and get some miles in !

As the 'cross season came to its end, I finally managed to get a proper 'cross frame I could call my own - the Handsling CXC - shame I only got to race it once before season's end.

But that's not a problem because the Handsling CXC is much more than 'just' a cyclo-cross frame. I've been riding it all through the spring and I have been bowled over by just how versatile it is. Whether on club runs, the local chain-gang or early season sportives, the CXC has tackled them all with ease.

The frame is constructed from Toray T700 carbon fibre and builds up into a light and stiff frame - bunny hopping over obstacles is a breeze! The huge BB shell does not allow any flex and the CXC climbs like a mountain goat. The beefy straight forks come with a 1 1/8th to 1 1/2th inch taper which means no flex when braking or steering; great for last minute changes of direction.

I was worried about the matt UD finish, but it has stood up amazingly well; the chainstays remain un-marked despite some heavy abuse from the chain.

If I could only have one bike, the Handsling CXC would probably be it.

Cross rider, Alan Dorrington provides a quick report the build and first impressions of his Handsling Bikes CXD

The arrival of my new Handsling Bikes CXD frameset opened up the opportunity to build myself a race-specific bike to a chosen spec, with the parts that I wanted, rather than run with a manufacturer specced bike where inevitably some compromises would have been made for cost and ready availability of components.

So, in building up the CXD, each individual part could be chosen for either durability, weight, performance or a combination of all three. The CXD frame itself is strikingly finished in Handsling livery and combines practical solutions to the usual 'cross conundrums of cable routing, clearance, carrying practicality and pleasing aesthetics. A huge bottom bracket shell promises stiffness, but without the shelf at the rear between downtube and rear tyre where mud can often collect unhelpfully. Cable routing is internalised along much of the frame tubes meaning the top tube and down tube are 'clean' from cable interference, aiding carrying greatly. Clearance around the fork crown is more than ample and at the rear a wishbone arrangement again offers good clearance, particularly on the sidewalls of the tyres where mud tends to accumulate. Overall then, it appears really well thought out, rather than being a road frame 'crossed up' with little care or attention to the specific demands of the discipline.

As indicated, I tend to prefer an eclectic mix of components, partly out of practically in use and partly for durability or ease of service during wet and muddy racing seasons. Single ring setups with a thick-thin chain retention system are increasingly popular and I have been running this on my 'cross bikes for some time now. It saves weight, money and increases clearance with very few downsides. Braking options for disc adopters were previously thin on the ground, but have now increased substantially though the choice is still mostly between simple mechanical, cable actuated set ups and full hydraulic systems. I still prefer the old-school BB7 cable set up - it is simple to use, very robust, doesn't present odd pad wear dilemmas and is cheap to buy and install. Full hydraulic versions clearly give better feel but in pure 1 hr 'cross races, braking is not usually the most important aspect of a lap and the BB7s do the job.

Bars and stem are simple, light alloy jobs for durability with a concession made to a carbon seatpost to add a bit of comfort in the relatively rare event of the ground actually being anything less than soft and mud laden.

Where I do go for the best available is in tyres - tubulars to be precise. Artisan tubs are to be fair as much a fetish item for the keen crosser as a performance choice, but nevertheless a choice where significant gains in performance can be made from using a really high quality handmade (preferably in Brittany, France) tubular, lovingly glued to a light wheelset.

Tubulars according to ground conditions from FMB (Slalom, SuperMud, custom made Green Michelin Mud treads), Challenge (Grifo, Chicane) and Dugast (Small Bird)

And the ride? First ride impressions can be mercurial things, with positive impressions taking more than one ride to filter into one's consciousness, and often only becoming truly apparent under race conditions. However, the CXD stood out immediately in a number of areas - stiffness, stability and chuckability. Oh, and weight.

It rides like a full on race bike - accelerating with a vivid quality under power, cruising at speed over challenging terrain and feeling delightfully light and comfortable when picking up or shouldering. Interestingly, it also passed the stability under dismount test with flying colours, giving a planted feeling when coasting at speed into barriers or before a run up.

More riding and racing will reveal how the CXD handles in more challenging conditions, but for now I am more than happy with the chuckability, apparent raceability and startling lightness this frame gives.

Evening racing for the experienced rider at Dunsfold Aerodrome – home of that show Top Gear – in Surrey.

It was very windy conditions that greeted everyone at the Dunsfold Park Airfield as gales blew into southern England.

Our interpid correspondent and Handsling Racing team rider, Graham Crow took advantage of a slow moving peloton and attacked early, bridging to even earlier attacker Jeremy Brougham of London Dynamo and bringing VC Meuden’s Craig Wilson with him. They forged a massive gap over the peloton.

The last lap saw some cat and mouse tactics between the three of them, but unfortunately it didn’t pay off for Crow, who ended up 2nd in the 40-50 aged riders and 3rd in the race!

Vince Halpern's 2014 season

Vince Halpern had a reasonable season in 2014. He managed to keep his 1st Category License for 2015.

National Points 122

National Rank 1st Category riders - 85th

Vince was the Imperial Winter Series Overall Champion 2013-2014 with a great record of top 3 placings in 7 out of the 10 rounds, and a win in round 9.

Over the summer season, Vince focused on the Twickenham CC Vets Races again winning the 9th round. "9 seems to be my lucky number!!", he says. He had multiple top 10s in these Twickenham CC Vets Series races.

Vince endured a unseasonably cold and wet day National Masters Road Race Championships (D (45+)) - 11th

He also raced in the super fast Tuesday night crits at Hillingdon securing multiple top 10s in the BC West Thames Series, all of which are E/1/2 races and attract a top field.

As well as all this regular action, Vince managed to squeeze in an Ironman. The DATEV Challenge Roth Ironman 2014 saw him finish in 11hrs 30mins for the 3.8k swim/180km bike/42km run.

Not too shabby for a 45 year old... Oh, he and Monica also managed to squeeze in having their first child as well. A good year indeed.

Fuelled by my love of most things French and Alpine, and having watched this years Tour De France peloton race up the iconic Col De Lautaret and Col D’Izoard during stage 14, I decided it was time to get out to the Alps to experience the pleasure and pain for myself.

La Routes Des Grandes Alpes was built between 1909 and 1937 by the French Touring Club at a time when the Alps were still relatively inaccessible. It was intended to facilitate ease of movement for local people, as well as to open the mountains up to the growing tourism industry. It also made it possible to drive South from Thonon Les Bains right across the Alps and down into Nice on the Cote D’Azur.

The 2014 edition of the Vuelta Majorca consisted of two individual road races followed by a 3-day stage race…

No small undertaking, especially given Majorca’s tough terrain and the fact that the previous year’s event had a rest day before the start of the 3-day; this year the rest day came after the first stage.

We had fantastic weather for the whole week with daytime race temperatures from 26 to 30 degrees.

Four of us travelled over from the UK and stayed in the centre of the island, in a villa in the town of Inca. Ah, the off season. That time of year where the weather is starting to turn, the nights are drawing in, your legs seem forever heavy and sometimes even the thought of getting the bike out of the garage is almost an intense session in itself.

You have had a full summer season, be it road racing, hitting the sportive trails or hammering up and down a dual carriageway. Either way the time has come to back off, unwind and take things just that little bit easier.

So, what now? Lock the bike away? Rip open the donuts? Hit the pub on the mother of all benders?

It is very easy to go completely the other way to the strict path that you have been following all season, to not watch the calories or fat content that you are consuming and to cease all or any form of activity. After all, you have worked so hard this year and will work hard again next year, so where is the harm?

But is this really the best option? It may well feel good for a while but consider this sudden change in lifestyle and what effects it could have on, not just your physical state but, on your mental state as well.

If you have spent the last few months on a strict diet and a hard training regime, then to suddenly change all of that could have severe consequences and make things tougher for you down the line when you do need to get back in the saddle again... Read more>

The Hillingdon Imperial Winter Series saw Vince Halpern net 3rd in Elite race, whilst a resurgent Andrew Rigg grabbed 3rd place in the 3rd cat race.

Vince has now done enough to secure the 2014 season overall.

Looking comfortable on his Trigon, 'aero' helmet way back on his un-aero head, ever present grin... that's our Vinny, soon to be crowned the 2014 Winter Series champion.

Riggy is ready for the racing season proper and has lost 6 kilos apparently...

I feel quite guilty writing this post, as my good mate Vince 'Vegas' Halpern is on fire, and I had planned to accompany him during his annual 'winter racing season' but illness took me out after just two rounds, both of which were somewhat marred for me by mass crashes.

Whilst I seem to be at that age when thanks to three young kids illness is a constant threat, 45 year old legend Vinny Vegas isn't a man to let either age or illness get in the way of anything.

Any day now he will become a proud Dad for the first time and that's at a time when he is leading the overall standings in the Imperial Cycles Hillingdon Winter Series, regularly putting the sword to riders to whom he could actually be their father - mathematically at least.

Not even neo-pro rider Jake Martin, now hiding over in Majorca, has managed to shake Vinny this winter, despite his annoying tactic of lapping the field to avoid having to take on Vince in the bunch sprint!

Vince on form in Hillingdon Winter Series

Simon and Vince have been racing the Imperial Winter Series at Hillingdon, though in reality only Vince has been racing... He's been 3rd at both rounds so far. The races have been marred by major, multi-rider crashes on the last lap at both events, but Vince has good form and has managed to stay well placed ahead of them, unlike Simon!

Reality check at the last round though after Jake Martin lapped the whole field - mind you he is half of Vince and Simon's age, and does the amount of training in one day that we manage in a whole week, so we need to maintain perspective.

Now that the 3 Peaks is over, Rob's hoping to get back to race pace with a few more intense sessions over the next few weeks. He got off to a good starts with 28th in the senior's race at the London Cross League round held at Herne Hill.

If anyone fancies having the most fun you can possibly have on a bicycle - even falling over doesn't seem to matter or hurt - then get along to Handsling's new weekly cyclocross training sessions at Barnes Bridge, as organised by Rob Allen and Tim Granshaw.

On a Friday morning for a 9-30am start. Mountain bikes welcome.

Here they are in action - lots of drills in and out of cones and a few mock races with a lot of shoulder barging and general tom-foolery - especially from the Grinch!
