Follow these tips to ensure a good haircut and a good time on your next salon visit.

1. Bring in a picture. Try to find close up shots, front and back if you can find them. Magazines are great to find your latest celebrity hair crush, just tear out and bring in. Google or Pinterest are great search options, too. You can then bring your desired look in to your stylist printed out or on your phone. You can even print out pictures to show what you don't want your hair to look like to help get on the same page with your stylist.

2. Speak up. If you see your stylist doing something you're not sure about - ask questions and express your concerns. The more you communicate the more your stylist can understand what you are looking for. Hair professionals are not mind readers so speak up and tell them if you're not happy so they can adjust their technique immediately or get on the right track for next time.

3. Build a relationship. Hopping from one stylist to the next is oftentimes not the answer to finding a good stylist or haircut. The more a stylist works with you and your hair the more they will understand your needs and how your hair behaves. Don't get me wrong if you have a terrible first visit - move on! But if you feel you were listened to and your stylist got very close to what you asked for then more than likely things will only go up from there.

4. Show up on time and be pleasant. Your stylist doesn't want to rush due to your tardiness or grouchiness. Especially if you want to change your look - you should be prompt to your appointment time. This allows for your stylist to have adequate time to give you the proper consultation and haircut you deserve.

5. Be a good client. Show him or her that you appreciate her work when a job is done well. This can be done verbally, through a tip, a positive review, or all of the above. A stylist will put you on his or her VIP list for sure and will bend over backwards to make sure you are happy.

There are a lot of hair terms and vocabulary that can be confusing to use when you're in the salon. This entry hopes to clear up some of the frustration clients stumble upon when wanting their hair colored. I get asked often what the difference is between semi-permanent and permanent haircolor. What is the best coloring choice for gray coverage? Will my haircolor wash out? And more. Educate yourself with some basics below and check back for more helpful salon tips on the Happy Hair Stylist blog.

Highlights:

Lower Maintenance
Grows out with faint lines of demarcation
Coverage: blended
How it works: Your stylist can specifically place lighter pieces or darker (often called a lowlight) pieces of color throughout your hair. Adds dimension and helps to blend and break up a darker all over color. Highlights can also minimize the harsh look of an all over gray hair color.

Semi Permanent:

Low to Medium maintenance
Grows out with very faint to no line of demarcation
Coverage: blended
How it works: Applied from the roots to the ends of the hair strand with a bottle or brush. This type of color is extremely safe on the hair and adds richness, vibrancy, and color-change. If you have gray the dye stains white hairs to look like highlights. This type of color can only make your hair darker or change the tone of the color. It cannot lift color out or make your hair lighter.
Benefits: Low maintenance, low commitment to color, no peroxide, fantastic shine.

Permanent:

Medium to High Maintenance
Grows out with a subtle line of demarcation
Coverage: blended to complete coverage
How it works: Applied with a bottle or brush, this type of color adds richness, vibrancy, and color-change. Permanent dye stains hair and deposits pigment to give nice coverage to gray hair. You can also make your hair lighter with permanent color due to its lifting properties. Color cannot lift color so you can only lighten virgin hair with permanent dyes.

Advanced Permanent:

High degree of Maintenance
Grows out with a strong line of demarcation
Coverage: complete to opaque
How it works: Applied with a bottle or brush, this type of color adds richness, vibrancy, and color-change. You can make your hair lighter with permanent color due to its lifting properties. Color cannot life color so you can only lighten virgin hair with permanent dyes. Advanced Permanent dyes stain the hair and deposit pigment to give strong coverage to gray hair.
Benefits: Excellent for complete coverage on coarse, wiry, and resistant gray hair.

Note:
*All color fades whether you are coloring with highlights, semi, permanent, or advanced permanent applications. Have your haircolor last longer by using the right products and keeping it hydrated.

The top 3 reasons why I LOVE hair and my job.

Hair is exciting! It's the very opposite of boring. Everyone's hair and taste is different so nothing is ever repetitive or redundant. Highlights, curls, cuts, or blowouts, are all the tools I use to let me express my creativity through hair. Not sure what I wanted to do out of high school, I tried a couple different things but none compared to that great feeling when, with comb and shears in hand, I chopped my mannequins hair for the first time. Love at first snip and still going strong.
I love Salon Amnesia. What a wonderful place to create beautiful hair! The atmosphere is chic and fun and the whole team is fabulous. From gorgeous chandeliers to gossip magazines it's certainly a great place to come into work everyday.
My clients. Some clients I have had for so many years that I consider you true friends. I love hearing your stories and spending time with you in my chair. Meeting new people and helping you love your hair is the best feeling in the world. As clients you challenge me, make me laugh, keep me on my toes, and most of all inspire me. Hydrate Your Hair

Tips to Add Moisture IN the Shower:

Use a deep conditioning mask on your hair once a week. If you have extremely dry and damaged hair use the mask every time you’re in the shower. Using a conditioner that has both hydrating and proteinizing properties helps heal and build up hair from the inside out.
Squeeze out as much moisture as you can before applying any type of conditioner. Hair will absorb more of the nutrients without being diluted by the water. Always leave in for a few minutes before rinsing.
Moisturizing shampoos and conditioners may build up over time so make sure you use a clarifying shampoo once a month to break up any weight and clear the way for the moisturizing properties of your daily products to penetrate the hair shaft easier.

Tips to Add Moisture OUT of the Shower:

Sleep in a mask or put a deep conditioner in your hair while you clean around the house so the moisture can really soak into your strands. Then rinse with lukewarm water to seal the cuticles.
Use a creamy leave-in conditioner to really lay on the hydration even after you get out of the shower. I like to apply one after using a light detangler. Towel blot your hair, spray in the detangler, brush with a wide tooth comb, and then apply your leave-in.
If you have fine hair a light hydrating detangler will be enough. A creamy leave-in conditioner may weigh hair down so skip it altogether or only apply on ends since they need the most TLC.
I see many brittle and dry bangs. Spot treat your hair in those areas by applying a moisturizing mask while you sleep and shower as usual in the morning.
Take a break if you can from any hot tools or blow dryers that may damage your strands. Even if it's just for the weekend, a little vacation for your hair never did any harm.

Take these tips to heart and you'll on be way your way to silky soft hair in no time.

Hair Trend: Bows!

Bows are in! Bows on headbands, bobby pins, pigtails, braids, ponytails, - you name it, bows are in. This trend is so girly and I love it! Solid colors are really on trend but feel free to experiment with florals and patterned ribbons. Satin ribbons look prettiest in my opinion but other textures can create fun styles, too.

This fresh look is fun and it's easy to create your own bow accessories by simply heading to the craft store and buying a few pretty ribbons. This trend is absolutely amazing at making simple ponytails or other hairstyles look chic and modern. It will look like you made a real effort in the morning when all you did was tie a bow.

I hope you are inspired by these ribbon accents!

The Wedding Diaries

January 7th, 2012 - I arrived at lovely Mount Hermon in the Santa Cruz mountains to help a bride get ready on site with her hair. The weather was perfect and 60 degrees midday in January! Shining sun and gorgeous redwoods surrounded the beautiful day. The wedding party got ready in a cute cabin in the forest - a perfect backdrop for the preparations.

My long time client and pal, Lisa is beautiful inside and out and was a delight to work with as always. We swept her shoulder length hair to a pretty unkempt side bun secured with bobby pins and one glittery diamond pin. Her signature long bangs framed her face in the front and helped keep softness as well as kept Lisa looking like Lisa.

Her bridesmaid Melody was also a pleasure to work with. Long chocolatey hair curled to perfection was tastefully teased, pulled half up, and secured with a diamond bobby pin for glitz. The ombre haircolor technique is everywhere these days and blondes are getting in the fashion trend. The ombre style of having one color slowly fade into another has been seen in fashion designs for years and is still going strong in salons for haircolor.

The blonde ombre is creating a beautiful darker root fading into lighter blonde ends. How can you get a haircut without taking off length? - Add layers! Cutting in layers to your hairstyle adds texture, shape, and volume. They help lighten up heavy and bulky hair and help make your styling time quicker and easier.

Long Layering
Long layers help break up the heavy perimeter of your hair, keeping your style from looking too blunt and straight at the ends. The layers lighten up the ends of your hair and make it easier to flip out or under when styling. Long layers are great if you are active and need all of your hair to fit up into a ponytail. This type of layering is also easy to grow out and maintain. Longer layers add a soft bit of texture on the ends for instant sophistication.

Medium Layering
If longer layers just aren’t cutting it, take your layers up to the next level with medium to long layering. The medium length layers help frame your face and add a little extra body and volume to your style. These layers can give you a more rounded shape so make sure your stylist blends them in well to the longer layers for a seamless look. Medium layers tend to add a beautiful hourglass shape to your cut.

Short Layering
I love short layers because they are the key to getting easy and practically instant volume! Adding short layers to the top crown of the head makes round brushing volume into your hair a breeze. Combine short layers into medium and long for root to end texture and shape. Short layers add interest and dimension and work great on any length of hair.

Have Thin Hair? - Take these tips into consideration. Tons of layers are not recommended for clients with thin hair as this can make hair look sparse or straggly. Have your stylist layer just the top crown area to add some volume and keep the bottom length of your hair still looking full. Or consider skipping the layers but add in some bangs for face framing and shape.

Halloween Hair Tips & Guide Lines

Considering coloring your hair this Halloween? Read through these tips and guide lines as a precaution so you your hair won’t be scaring you after the spooky night is dead and gone.

Tons of spray dyes line the shelves of Halloween Super Stores calling out your name as a quick answer to colored hair. The temporary hair sprays come in an array of natural and neon shades. They are fun to use to make your hair look wacky but don’t expect smooth shiny hair with consistent coverage. Stick with lighter colors that will wash out like they claim but stay away from dark colors like brown, black, sometime even dark blue and purple. If you’re hair is naturally light or blonde you are more at risk for dye pigments to stick around in your hair even after you get out of the shower, so take precautions and opt for lighter colors to spray. These sprays are the easiest to wash out but if you are really concerned, try spraying a small test strand in the back of your head to see how it washes out before committing to your entire head on Halloween.

You may also be haunted by the shelves of semi-permanent hair color that claim to come out after several washes. A lot of time this is true but there are scary times when this is not always the case. Hair color even in semi-permanent dyes contain pigments that enter through the cuticle of the hair shaft. They do not penetrate much deeper making them easier to fade and wash out but if you have fine hair or damaged hair, the color molecules can “cling on” longer to your hair making it much more difficult to wash out. So be extremely careful when opting for dark colors or simply be prepared for not all of it to wash out in the time claimed.

If you are planning on using more of a permanent color for the night of Halloween know that your color will be just that – permanent. If you are fine with being a Lucille Ball redhead even after you’ve eaten your last piece of candy then that’s fine. Be prepared to live with whatever color you’ve chosen. The worst mistake you could make is dying your hair black to be Morticia and wake up the next day wanting to color your hair back blonde or even brown. It takes more than a magic wand to reverse the effects of permanent dyes in the hair. Bleaching, color stripping, and several sessions of lightening services will be required to lift dark pigments out of the hair. These services are most times damaging and very time consuming. Moral of the story for wanting black hair on Halloween - opt for a wig instead!

More Spooky Tips:
♣    If you’re a blonde stay away from dark colored hair dyes of any kind.
♣    Use the old-fashioned “flour-in-your-hair trick” for looking like a sweet old grandma or a young ugly zombie on Halloween.
♣    Try a wig! Even if you can’t find the perfect cut for your wig, take the scissors to it yourself to custom make your look or take it into your stylist for a makeover.
♣    Look for a costume that your natural colored hair can pull off so you won’t have to worry about coloring it at all.
♣    Attempt to stay away from the color black at all costs.

Did I scare you yet? Enjoy your Halloween but just keep in mind it is just one night of fun and you don’t want to be haunted by the ghost of bad hair days to come.

Hair Inspiration: Pig Tails!

This classic double pony style is not just for little girls anymore.

I also love this on women with short hair. Try pigtails with braids, accessories, curls, or straight. Use fun matching hair ties, ribbons, or put a flower on one tail for a cute summery look. Pigtails are a sweet casual style that will make you feel like a kid again. Think outside of the box the next time you need to break up your style routine and try pigtails!

I have been taking clients at the lovely Salon Amnesia in Los Gatos for almost a month now and it has been going great. I have been receiving lots of positive feedback about the new location – thank you for your continued business!
