You’ve sought meetings, reached out, sent notes, extended invitations … and nothing seems to move. At times like these, silence can be discouraging.

In major gifts work, a pause in communication does not always signal a lack of interest. We all know relationships develop over time. These in-between times call for perspective, patience and disciplined strategy.

When prospect movement slows, consider these three approaches:

Evaluate the Messenger

Peer-to-peer relationships remain one of the most effective tools in fundraising. Sometimes the opportunity for progress can be as simple as a different messenger.

Would the prospective donor respond more readily to a board member, volunteer leader, CEO or another donor? Is there someone with shared experiences, greater credibility or a stronger personal connection who could reach out instead?

Change the Strategy

When outreach slows, resist the urge to use the same approach through different channels: another email, another meeting request or another invitation. Instead, shift the type of engagement. Ask for advice on an initiative. Share a meaningful impact story or book connected to their interests. Introduce them to a program leader or beneficiary. Thoughtful engagement keeps the relationship grounded in mission, curiosity and shared purpose.

Assume the Best

Sometimes, people are simply busy. Maybe they aren’t uninterested or intentionally disrespectful. Maybe life is simply happening—vacation, illnesses, caring for children or elderly adults, celebrations with friends and family. Give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they still care about your mission. Remain thoughtful, consistent and mission-focused; when the timing is right, you’ll be positioned to move the relationship forward.

When you’re stuck, control what you can, which is quite a lot. Major gift fundraising requires long-term relationship thinking. Continue cultivating other prospects, stewarding active donors and building future opportunities. This steady, forward movement across a portfolio may put “gas in your tank” and position you to return to slower-moving relationships with renewed focus and energy.

“I’m not sure we should include it,” the person said. “It doesn’t feel very fundable. I mean … who wants to repaint a boiler room?”

I understood the hesitation, but I couldn’t help sharing a story – one that still makes me emotional every time.

My dad spent 42 years as the plant engineer at our hometown hospital. He knew every inch of that building. It was his second home. To him, the boilers, walls and grounds weren’t just systems and structures, they were an integral part of caring for people well.

When we were teenagers, my brother and I got our first jobs thanks to him: mowing hospital lawns and painting yellow parking lines. At the time, it didn’t feel glamorous. But to my dad, it mattered. All of it mattered.

In 2010, my dad was diagnosed with cancer. For treatment, he stayed at the Hope Lodge in Iowa City, four hours from home. He was there four days a week, for 12 weeks. Treatment only took about an hour each day, so he had a lot of time on his hands.

He didn’t sit still for long.

He found the maintenance team and, before long, was volunteering. Changing light bulbs, painting rooms, sharpening mower blades, fixing whatever he could. That was who he was. Caring for a place was his way of caring for people.

When my dad passed away in 2014, my mom made a gift to the Hope Lodge in his memory. She had one condition: The funds would be used for maintaining the building.

At first, the development officer was puzzled. But when my mom explained, it made perfect sense. The maintenance crew was thrilled and honored.

For some donors, there is nothing more meaningful than making sure a place is well maintained with excellence, consistency and pride. So when you’re developing a campaign budget, don’t leave out the so-called “unfundable” needs.

This is the power of philanthropy: the transformative potential to connect an organization’s greatest needs with their donors’ deepest passions.

What seems ordinary or overlooked to one person may hold special meaning and significance to another. Instead of assuming what won’t resonate, take time to share the need in earnest. If it matters, there may be someone for whom it will matter deeply.

Someone like my dad, who understands the value of a boiler room, and someone like my mom, who knows how best to honor a loved one.

Thank you, Mom! And miss you, Dad!

Copy-paste it into an AI platform, ask for improvements, and the options are virtually limitless: “From the very start, Marley was dead.” “Marley was, from the outset, quite dead.”

A classic opening … dead: to begin with.

AI is astounding and an invaluable tool for innovation. Used well, it can take you where you want to go at lightning speed. For a deep dive from AI experts speaking at Kinetic’s 6th Annual Power of Philanthropy Summit, explore the summit recap.

For tips from a novice in the trenches, here you go:

Asking AI for help is fun and functional, but it’s a tool for inspiration and accuracy, not dependency.

Mull, imagine, gather information, move things around, think deeply. Then, ask AI. Like relying only on navigation apps to drive, losing the ability to discern north from south or retain situational awareness might be a bug or a feature. Either way, good instincts are priceless. Don’t let them atrophy. Start with human intelligence and use artificial tools as a means to an end, not an end in itself.

Sharing options with others is easy, but options aren’t answers.

Rule of thumb: If someone else can plug it into AI and generate a list (they can), don’t send that list. Yes, it’s speedy—with a hit of dopamine after hitting send—but it’s neither creative nor helpful. Look over the options, use critical thinking (head), trust what feels right (heart), envision the end audience (empathy), imagine the desired outcome (aspiration), make the call (leadership). Then, share good ideas or act on them.

Accepting everything at once is fast, but not always better: The A is still artificial.

Finish as you begin: with a human point of view. Don’t accept paragraphs out of whole cloth. Use discretion to retain authenticity. AI will give feedback indefinitely, so consider diminishing returns. Is the product improving or simply changing? And always guard the mission and style guide or the nonprofit’s culture will drift over time. Stay thinky: “Do we even use serial commas? Are so many em dashes really necessary?”

AI’s incredible, especially when it’s coupled with human intelligence and intuition. Less A, more I.

If you’ve spent time in fundraising, you know the rhythm. Thoughtful planning. Meaningful conversations. Strategic follow-up. And sometimes, slower movement than you hoped for.

Earlier this year, I found myself in one of those quieter stretches. Nothing was necessarily wrong, but nothing felt easy either. Decisions took longer and the momentum was hard to build.

In the middle of that season, I had a conversation with a donor that shifted my perspective. We were not discussing a specific ask or a campaign total. Instead, we talked about why the mission mattered to them. At one point, the person said, “I just want to know that what I’ve worked for can make a difference for someone else.” It was a simple statement, but it captured something profound. Beneath every proposal, every strategy and every benchmark is a human desire to matter and to contribute to something larger than ourselves.

Philanthropy is often evaluated by numbers. We celebrate benchmarks, track commitments and measure progress toward goals. Those metrics are important because they translate into services delivered, buildings constructed and lives changed. But numbers are only the visible expression of something deeper. Every gift represents a decision. A choice to invest in hope, possibility and community.

Over the years, I have seen generosity expressed in many ways. Some gifts are highly visible. Others are quiet and steady. Some come easily. Others require sacrifice. What remains consistent is the motivation behind them. People give because they want to change lives. They may give because they remember a moment when someone showed up for them. They may give because they want their success, their gratitude or even their hardship to serve a purpose beyond themselves.

That is why I still believe in philanthropy. Not because every campaign is effortless or every conversation ends in a commitment but because I continue to see people choose generosity.

Even in quieter seasons.
Even when progress feels incremental.
Even when the outcome is not immediate.

Fundraising, at its core, is not about persuasion. It is about alignment. It is about connecting what people value with opportunities to act on those values. When that alignment happens, something powerful occurs. A community and our world grows stronger. The donor experiences the quiet fulfillment of knowing they helped make it possible.

The pace may change from season to season, but the desire to make a difference remains. And as long as I continue to witness individuals who want their lives to count for something beyond themselves, I will continue to believe in the power of philanthropy.

Assessing an organization’s internal readiness is fundamental to ensuring a positive outcome. Evaluating your readiness prior to a campaign also instills confidence in your leadership, knowing that the proper structure, strategy and leadership is already in place, right from the start.

Drawing on several benchmarks, an objective evaluator is able to access a nonprofit’s readiness to not only ask for gifts, but receive them and maintain good relationships for the long term. Some essential benchmarks include a strategic plan, case statement, donor base, leadership engagement and systems for tracking data and communicating with donors and prospects.

Here are just a few benchmarks used to help determine a nonprofit’s campaign readiness:

Strong Strategic Foundation

A clear strategic plan and compelling case statement are critical. Your board as well as donors need to understand what your nonprofit does and why it matters. Once you have a clear vision and a path for moving it forward, aligning the fundraising plan with the campaign goals ensures consistency and credibility.

Solid Relationships and Infrastructure

Major gifts are developed through relationships. They are not transactional. A measure of readiness includes evaluating your donor constituency, identifying prospects and engaging them meaningfully. We look at your in-house systems, including record keeping, communications and research to ensure they are efficient and data-driven to support personalized donor cultivation.

Support From Leadership and Board Members

Successful campaigns require active involvement from leadership and board members. Their participation not only provides meaningful support, but it signals confidence and commitment to potential donors. Strong fundraising leadership and a fully engaged board can open doors, validate the mission and help secure transformational gifts.

Major gift fundraising begins with readiness. An honest assessment by an outside evaluator is a solid first step on a long and rewarding journey. By evaluating the organization against benchmarks and strengthening key areas in advance, you can position your nonprofit for sustainable success and deeper donor partnerships.

I walked into an office with Major Amos Shiels to present a multi-million-dollar naming opportunity for The Salvation Army of Springfield’s Harbor House. While we were strategizing for the meeting, I suggested a bold ask amount grounded in data and giving history, as fundraising professionals do.

Amos had something bigger in mind.

He swings for the fences, trusting God to deliver the outcome, or not, if it is not His will.

As we wrapped up that birthday meeting, I joked that the only gift I wanted was for them to consider our proposal. They did. And later, they said no.

Amos did not lose faith.

When he was first transferred to Springfield, Amos inherited a previously approved capital campaign with an aggressive goal and a great deal of work to do. The project had been discussed for years, and moving it forward required persistence, adaptability and steady leadership. The campaign has faced challenges of every kind. Shifting plans, timelines tightened, invitations declined and expectations tested. Through it all, Amos kept the faith.

“God’s got this.”

Months later, we received a call from that same prospect. He shared that a real estate sale was coming together, and he felt led to give the full amount we had originally asked for to the Harbor House project!

Since then, my colleague and I have adopted using a new phrase anytime we need to believe for something big: faith like Amos.

Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the Harbor House groundbreaking. Standing there, listening to donors and civic leaders talk about the impact of The Salvation Army, I was reminded that moments like this carry a weight that is hard to put into words.

Harbor House will give men a safe place to get their lives back on track. The Food Pantry will help ensure fewer families in Springfield need to wonder where their next meal will come from. Long after the equipment is gone and the ribbon is cut, those doors will keep opening and those shelves will stayed filled, year after year.

This is a project The Salvation Army has been talking about for fifteen years. What once felt distant is now becoming real, not because the path was easy, but because people stayed faithful to the vision and committed to seeing it through.

That kind of faith, faith like Amos, is a clear example of the power of philanthropy. It turns generosity into real impact and long-held hope into lasting change for a community.

As artificial intelligence reshapes how we fundraise, govern and measure impact, the most important advantage may not be the tools we adopt, but the questions we are willing to ask.

The Power of Philanthropy Summit is a free virtual event designed for nonprofit professionals, board members, volunteer leaders and philanthropists navigating change and innovation. Hosted by Kinetic in partnership with the Bloch School of Management at the University of Missouri–Kansas City, the Summit brings together thought leadership and practical insight to explore how curiosity, discernment and responsible innovation can strengthen philanthropic impact.

But, then, there is this: You have been assigned to ask potential donors for contributions. It feels uncomfortable, because: You worry about making the perfect ask; you dread being rejected and wonder how it will appear to your campaign peers; and/or you are concerned soliciting gifts could intrude upon relationships you have with potential donors. Guess what? Most everyone who has been part of a capital campaign has experienced similar emotions. Here are strategies to help you rest easy and embrace the ask:

Don’t Expect Perfection

Your role isn’t to deliver the perfect soliloquy or hit a giving threshold. It’s to invite people, genuinely and in your words, into the process of supporting something that has deep meaning to them and you.

You Aren’t Speaking With Strangers

Asks are expected and overwhelmingly welcomed. This isn’t a solicitation of strangers to contribute to a campaign. You’re making asks of others with a nexus to – or at least a positive knowledge of – the organization you are supporting.

Your Invitation Will Acknowledge Their Value

An ask is a sign of respect for the person’s belief in the organization and their standing in the community. Those who meet these qualifications would much rather be asked and listened to than be overlooked. You have already expressed your support for the campaign by being part of its volunteer team. Your ask allows others to express theirs.

Remember, always, that giving is a privilege, turning means into impact. You know this, and so do those of whom you ask. Your interaction is a precious moment to remind you both. Giving it its own reward – trust asking to offer nothing less.

My son’s fight with cancer took a devastating turn last fall.

In a previous blog, I shared he had been No Evidence of Disease (NED) for nine years and off treatment for four years when his cancer, Neuroblastoma, returned the summer of 2024 at age 16. We celebrated July 1, 2025 when we confirmed the treatments once again worked, and he was NED.

However, the celebrations turned to sorrow just a few months later when some scary symptoms led to learning his disease had now invaded the leptomeningeal area – the tissue that surrounds the brain and spine.

Despite it all, the one thing we have held onto and continue to hold onto is hope.

Hope can be found in many places – in the stories of others who are thriving after similar setbacks, in the hum of the Ronald McDonald House playroom where volunteers bring joy through meals and play, in the hospital hallways where countless donors are recognized for believing in hospitals’ missions.

It’s also seen in the faces of audience members or museum visitors whose lives are enriched by the arts, in classrooms where students are given opportunities to succeed and in the hearts of children and families whose bodies are warmed and tummies are filled by the kindness of strangers.

Ultimately, what the power of philanthropy delivers is hope to those who are personally impacted by a mission’s donors, fundraising professionals and volunteers who, together, work to support nonprofits every single day.

No matter how big or small the gift, and whether it is a gift of time, talent or treasure, the hope philanthropy brings is priceless and greatly appreciated by our family and countless others.
