Let’s take a moment to recognize the Hall-of-fame, our past extravaganza winners. 2009 – The Decemberist’s Hazards of Love. 2010 – Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs. 2011 – The Felice Brother’s Celebration Florida. 2012 – Dr. Dog’s “Be The Void”/Father John Misty’s “Fear Fun”, 2013 – The National’s “Trouble Will Find Me”.

I looked over my list prior to writing this and realized that 2013 > 2014 overall. My #1 this year would probably be #4 last year, but there’s still plenty of good discoveries out there. Want to discuss it, you can find me on the website known as twitter.

Unfortunately I was diagnosed with the flu earlier this week. Why do you care? You most likely don’t however this post was almost ready to go but is at my office. Hence I’ve had to recreate everything and leaving out the sentence blurb about each album. Basically, my main genre is indie rock, folk singer-songwriters, some electronica that isn’t too weird, garage rock and older sounding country music. With each passing year I’m getting into more female indie artists as well.

I’ll write some thoughts about the final list at the end. Here are my top 42 albums of 2014. Remember, 42 is the answer to life, the universe and everything.

9. Felice Brothers - “Favorite Waitress”

8. First Aid Kit - “Stay Gold”

7. Strand of Oaks - “Heal”

3. The Men - “Tomorrow’s Hits”

2. Conor Oberst - “Upside Down Mountain”

1. St. Vincent - “St. Vincent”

Congratulations to St. Vincent for making the best album of the year. I’ve always been a fan but this record changed my perception of Ms. Clark. I’ve listened to it all year.

I’ve always been an unabashed Conor Oberst fan-boy, but his last few albums have lacked something starting with his second solo release. This effort is a perfect mix of a style he feels comfortable combined with his patented lyrics.

Much like The Hazean himself, I was blown away by The Men this year. Jack White and Beck round out the top 5, with Jack White improving upon his first solo album and Beck making me a fan again.

The rest is an eclectic (if you disregard no rap, metal or pop music) blend of other genres. Thanks for reading.

Favorite Albums Of 2014: Embrace Your Inner Swifty

Nice to meet you, where you been?

First four weeks in the NFL are in the books and the BACKDOOR COVER is 13-7 on the year thus far. Big week with 7 games on the slate for us.

I don’t go hard in the paint on college football anymore, but I will let you know I have dropped U.S. currency (the kind that folds, not the kind that jingles) on the Alabama Crimson Tide this weekend. If you like folding money as well, I suggest you get in on that sweet, sweet action.

This is the point in the year where we have to decide if wacky results are a week aberration, or a trend that we don’t want to be late recognizing. Don’t forget to get on social media to dish out EBOLA jokes while the gettins good!

Good luck this week amigos.

On to the games!

NFL

GREEN BAY -8 vs. Vikings – As a Mississippi State fan, I can relate to a group that takes pride in the quality of their cheese. I couldn’t live up there but glad cheddar makes you happy too. As far as the game, I’ll take the home team on a short week against a forecast of murky Bridgewater, with a chance of Ponder.

NEW YORK JETS +6.5 vs. Chargers – This isn’t really about the Jets as much as it is fading the Chargers. They aren’t as good as they’ve seemed and I do not trust them to win by a touchdown. I seem to remember that Rivers isn’t great against Rex Ryan defenses but that could just be a dream I had, who knows.

DENVER -7 vs. Cardinals – America’s team has yet to have a win that is easy from start to finish. I think the offense gets out and the defensive pass rush gets to unleash hell on whoever is taking snaps for Arizona this week. Now’s the time to insert Wes Welker into your lineups gang.

SAINT LOUIS +7 vs. Eagles – Team that runs the ball off a bye week facing team that played on the west coast and lost a heartbreaker. Seems simple but yet it’s still more complex than the plot of Jurassic Park 3.

TENNESSEE -1.5 vs. Browns – Going to try the Titans one more time, even though they break my heart. Too bad George Strait retired, because that line is country gold. I love George but wish he played Heartland in concert. It’s not like he’s lacking for #1 hits though.
JACKSONVILLE +6 vs. Steelers – How bad does everyone think the Jaguars are? /looks at JAX box scores. Never mind, they’ve been awful. But it’s not like the Steelers deserve to be laying this on the road. Banking on the Bortles effect.

CINCINNATI -1 vs. Patriots – One game with the Patriots and I could call it a fluke. Two games are alarming. Three games is a sign that they team needs to be Ole Yeller’d. I’m going to put money on the better team to beat the worse team and see how that works out for me.

THE BACKDOOR COVER: WEEK 3

Have I mentioned yet that I went 6-1 ATS in this very column last week? That would be shallow and a pointless ego exercise, so I’m going to not even mention that I picked 6 games right to only 1 game wrong seven days ago.

While capping games this week it occurred to me that I was honing in on mostly underdogs. Sure dogs have raced out to a 19-12-1 ATS mark this season, but even I know that will even out eventually. My goal this week is to find the ones that offer value, but are also not named Raiders or Oakland. I believe I have succeeded.

If you were wondering – UNDERS are beating OVERS at an 18 – 14 clip. That seems about the right pace. If you can’t choose a side and want action, take the UNDER. It’s always a little better than 50% and you get to root for things like: punts, tackling in-bounds, penalties, dumb timeouts, etc. Really just a grand time for the whole family.

Any questions about these games or games I’m not taking, I always have an opinion on sports or Jennifer Anniston on the twitter @bryan_CTP and unlike those celebrities you keep stalking, I’ll answer.

Good luck this week amigos.

On to the games!

NFL

TAMPA BAY +6.5 vs. Falcons –Because why not. My Atlanta Braves have completely nosedived to end the season so I don’t feel like I can trust any team in Georgia at the moment. Think this might be a shootout as well.

WASHINGTON +6.5 vs. Eagles – Too many points. And I’m good at spotting too many points. All I had to do was look at this line to see that it was too many points for a football game that should be close. Book it.

NEW ORLEANS -10 vs. Vikings – Not sure why I can’t quit the Saints. Bet against him past two games but ready for them to get on the cover train now. FYI: that train does NOT stop in Metairie.

NEW YORK GIANTS +2.5 vs.Texans – OH NO, HERE COMES RYAN FITZPATRICK!! BETTER LAY THE POINTS ON THE ROAD!! HE’S SURE TO COVER THREE STRAIGHT WEEKS!! These statements are outrageous yet part of normal society it seems. Stop it.

TENNESSEE +7 vs.Bengals –You know how when you are channel flipping and BOOM! There’s the Hannah Montana movie. Of course you have to watch but in the back of my mind I wonder – Does Miley watch this movie ever? Does she even remember who she used to be? I hope so because that’s the whole point of her visiting Tennessee in the film.

PITTSBURGH +3.5 vs.Panthers – Nothing draws me in to a SNF game like getting the hook. This game has field goal spray-painted across its forehead. While their defense is atrocious, the Steelers don’t deserve to be buried just yet.

THE BACKDOOR COVER: WEEK 2

There are already enough words on the internet.

One of my favorite movies (PURE COUNTRY!!!) has a scene with a grandpa explaining why no one in his family talked during breakfast. Basically everyone knows everything and nothing is gained from people yapping their gums all the time. No reason to state the obvious.

This week we could talk about over-reaction vegas lines and or teams getting value. But I don’t have the time and you don’t care more than likely. You are here for picks and I have them hot’n’fresh from the oven below. Sure you could follow other people’s picks who have a lot more notoriety, but why? If I lose you money you can yell at me on twitter @bryan_CTP and we can work through why I’m an idiot together.

Good luck this week amigos..

On to the games!

NFL

PITTSBURGH/BALTIMORE UNDER 45 –I hope the Steelers win 44-0, the Ravens franchise disintegrates, front office fired and everyone in the stands wearing a Ray Rice jersey catches the stomach flu simultaneously after discovering sugar was poured into their gas tanks.

CLEVELAND +7 vs. Saints – Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Man walks into bar. Sits down and bets against New Orleans on the road. Wins money. Leaves with hottest girl there. The End.

NEW ENGLAND -3 vs. Vikings – In what should be a trap game ends up being exactly what you thought. New England isn’t starting 2-0 and has been straight cash after a loss then going on the road throughout the years. Don’t go re-inventing the poptart.

NEW YORK JETS +9.5 vs. Packers – Lot of fancy trends at work here say take the Jets and I love fancy. Reminds me of when I used to wear braided leather belts in jr. high. Until the Packers show they can stop the run I can’t trust them at a high number.

CHICAGO +7 vs.49ers – Don’t have reason behind this pick, but it will cover. Remember – you lose 100% of the bets you don’t make involving Jay Cutler.

OAKLAND +3 vs.Texans – I’m not ready to live in a world where the Texans are favored on the road just yet. They beat a bad team at home last week. I’m going with they can’t beat a bad team away from home this week. Or can’t beat two bad teams in a row. Whatever you want.

PHILADELPHIA +3 vs. Colts – I don’t think the Colts are very good. Can’t run, defense is suspect doesn’t equal the lofty post-season expectations I’ve seen from them. Think the Eagles are a better team with a smarter coach.

Waiver Wire Week 2: Ray Rice Fallout

Ray Rice was cut by the Ravens yesterday (you already know the story, so I won’t go into here in a fantasy football column), which was something we alluded to here several months ago.

Rice already was suspended the first two weeks of the season. In his absence, Bernard Pierce was expected to fill Rice’s role in the Ravens’ offense. But after an early fumble, Pierce was benched and that paved the way for an old but familiar name.

Justin Forsett.

Rice’s departure coupled with Pierce’s shaky start certainly does not clarify the situation in Baltimore. Forsett, 29-years-old, is not the future of the running game in Baltimore. But he will be used now that he’s proven to be effective in the Ravens’ offense.

Pierce may still be the heir apparent, but there is another young runner on the roster whom fantasy owners should add to their radar: Rookie Lorenzo Taliaferro, who got a lot of run in the preseason.

I wouldn’t add Taliaferro in shallow leagues (10 teams, 12 teams with small benches). But I would add him in deeper formats as well as long-term formats. Worth a stash.

Plenty of other names making waves this week, which figures to be a busy one of the waiver wire.

Buys

Justin Forsett, RB, Ravens
Bobby Rainey, RB, Buccaneers
Isaiah Crowell, RB, Browns
James Starks, RB, Packers (Eddie Lacy owners especially.)
Lorenzo Taliaferro, RB, Ravens
Markus Wheaton, WR, Steelers

Sells

Jake Locker, QB, Titans (I don’t believe it yet. Stay healthy.)
Allen Hurns, WR, Jaguars (Let someone else overpay for him.)

THE BACKDOOR COVER: WEEK ONE

Because just watching football is not enough is it.

Hardly anyone wants to be just a fan of their teams and keep up for the whole season anymore. So we devised a way to care about players instead of team by using their stats as points and playing with friends. But then that got boring as well. So now we have weekly fantasy leagues that you can compete in.

You know what’s never going to get boring?

Making fat stacks on top of fat stacks of theoretical internet dollars. Nothing gets you a prime VIP seat in the club and the ladies headed your way like proclaiming that your betting account is fully loaded with make-believe cash. You know it.

The key to making money is cashing out and having a plan to cash out. Sounds simple but the majority of people who bet put money in and don’t ever really think about stopping until their account is gone. It’s not real money at that point. If you want an action account that you know you’ll eventually lose enough that it’s empty, that’s fine but understand it’s what you are doing. The only way to win is money management. But hey, that’s not as much fun is it.

This is the fourth (I think) year of this column. I might not win every week but I win every year. Refresher – pick teams to win against the current oddsmakers lines, usually have between 5-10 a week. Win money. Be Happy.

Definitely adds the element to watching games that is currently lacking no matter how many fantasy leagues you enter or how much you want your team to win it all.

Good luck to each and everyone of you this season. I’m always available to hold your hands on twitter @bryan_CTP

On to the games!

NFL

SEATTLE -6 vs. Packers – People first look at this spread and think “oh man, with all that offense ain’t no way the cheeseheads can’t keep it close” while getting excited about the almost touchdown spread. Seattle is a weird place where they think mason jars are a new thing, so I’m not going against them at home until they prove me otherwise.

ATLANTA +3 vs. Saints – but tha black and gold have Drew Brees! Look, there are a few certainties in life. I don’t care about news that isn’t on twitter, people who prefer smooth peanut butter profile as serial killers and the Saints on the road don’t deserve my greenbacks.

ST. LOUIS -4 vs. Vikings – No idea who that guy is starting QB for the Rams, but I fully expect that defense to make up for any offense ineptitude. Unlike Seattle, the Rams have the opposite of a home field advantage so I’m not counting on any help in that department.

JACKSONVILLE +10.5 vs. Eagles – Getting double digits? Check. Have a running game? Check. (please God let Toby Gerhart have a great fantasy season, thx) Have a good defense? Check. A team the average fan assumes is a dumpster fire? Check. Everything I look for in a big underdog.

CHICAGO -7 vs. Bills – Speaking of dumpster fires, I think the Bills are overrated. Even for a team that is supposed to be average. I’ve eaten hot dogs for lunch the past two days which means not only am I poors, but I feel like I can relate to the normal Chicago resident’s daily life of processed mystery meats and overwhelming depression.

TENNESSEE +4 vs. Chiefs – You absolutely cannot give Jake Locker more than three points on the road. Absolute cardinal rule in odds-making, yet Vegas seems to be trolling the gamblers of America. I was told today I need to replace a toilet so I’m gonna let Shonne Greene and Co. buy me a new one. It’s that easy.

ARIZONA -3 vs. Chargers – Can’t have a MNF two-game slate and not have action on something, so here is that action. RELATED: I will be starting Carson Palmer in two fantasy leagues I waited juuuuuuuuuuuust a little too long at quarterback for this year. When the experts say wait on a quarterback they don’t mean go in a coma during the draft.

The Hazean's 2014 Survival League: Supporting St. Jude's

Supporting St. Jude is the most charitable thing I do all year, and probably the most important thing I do all year.

Every single dollar we raise for St. Jude goes toward operating the hospital. Every. Single. Dollar.

So we need your help. We’re doing a NFL Survival League in support of St. Jude. We did a similar fundraiser this past spring for March Madness, raising $75 for St. Jude in the process.

That’s a nice start for our fund-raising efforts. Our goal is to raise $500 for St. Jude this year, and we already have raised $125 toward that goal.

We’re going to do the same setup for the 2014 Survival League that we did for the March Madness league. $10 entry fee – five goes toward St. Jude, and the other five goes in the pot for the winner(s).

Sign up using the info/link below and, more importantly, help by spreading the word.
After you pay using the the PayPal link above, you’ll get an email with login information for the league.

Thanks for helping to support a great cause. Looking forward to another great football season in the process.

World Cup Names To Know: Group H

Previously:

Group B Names To Know

Group C Names To Know

Groups D, E, And F Names To Know

Group G Names To Know

ALGERIA

Who you know:

Madjid Bougherra – Algerian captain with more than twice as many international caps as anyone else on the team. Bougherra has played his club ball all across Europe and Asia, and at 31 years old, finds himself without a club for the 2014 season. Look for Bougherra to make this a statement tournament as he will have his hands full dealing with a power Belgian attack.

Who you should know:

Sofiane Feghouli – with only 20 international caps, Feghouli has made his claim to fame with Spanish club Valencia, where he has played 136 games. Feghouli is not known as a pure goal scorer, but will can create goal scoring opportunities from anywhere on the pitch. Look for Feghouli to find his way onto the stat sheet in the assist column or perhaps from a free kick or two.

Who you will know:

El Arbi Hillel Soudani – Soudani has the makings of an attacker that just likes to score goals. Having scored double-digit goals for every team he has ever played for (club and country), Soudani will look to keep adding to his goal tally.

*NabilBentaleb – mark this one as a gut call or one for the future, but this 19 year old has a talent that can’t be ignored. If he is given a chance on the pitch, keep a close eye on this <strike>little</strike> large hell on wheels.

BELGIUM

Who you know:

Vincent Kompany – turn on England’s Barclays Premier League and Kompany will either be playing or being talked about. This mountain of a defender earns his money the hard way by knocking down and dominating any opposing attacker. The rock of the Manchester City defense, Kompany is even more deadly when part of a free kick attack. Kompany will most assuredly get his dome on any stray ball in the box and bury it in the net.

Daniel Van Buyten – 80 international caps and 158 games with Germany’s Bayern Munich, Van Buyten is more than battle tested. Van Buyten will be standing tall at 6’6” and lined up right next to other Belgium tower Vincent Kompany. I don’t know of any mountain ranges running through Belgium, but if there are, they most certainly include Kompany and Van Buyten.

Who you should know:

Marouane Fellaini – Fellani has plenty of caps with his nation team, but is another Belgian who is more widely known for his club play at England’s Everton and Manchester United. Another towering figure at 6’4”, Fellaini combines that size with an impressive speed that allows him to roam all over the pitch. Look for Fellaini to move from box-to-box and get his foot on a strike or two.

Thibaut Courtois – one of the best and least known goalkeepers in the world, Courtois led his Spanish club team Atletico Madrid to a La Liga title and Champion’s League finals appearance. Courtois will turn heads with impressive performances and improbable saves. Courtois looks to guide Belgium to a deep run this World Cup.

*Simon Mingnolet – not only does Belgium have a top 5 goalkeeper in the world in Courtois, it actually has a second top 5 goalkeeper in Simon Mignolet. Playing for England’s Liverpool club, Mignolet had a stellar season.

Who you will know:

Eden Hazard – a young attacking midfielder, Hazard has a promising future ahead of him. One of English club Chelsea’s most dangerous attackers, Hazard will undoubtedly have a superb World Cup.

Romelu Lukaku – even after losing striker Benteke an injury, Belgium doesn’t even need to blink in order to replace him. Lukaku has a healthy mix of speed and ball striking and he, too, will make his mark in Brazil.

RUSSIA

Who you know:

Aleksandr Kerzhakov – leading the Russian national squad with 25 goals (next highest is 8), Kerzhakov is synonymous with Russian soccer. Kerzhakov has played his last 6 years of club football in Russia, logging over 150 games and 70 goals. Kerzhakov will need to be fully prepared to carry his nation to World Cup glory as there are not too many others on the squad that can make an impact like he can.

Who you should know:

Igor Akinfeev – another top notch keeper, Akinfeev has played his entire career (280 games) for Russian club CSKA Moscow where he has won five league titles. Often courted by English clubs, Akinfeev has refused to leave his Motherland and gained the respect and admiration of his fellow countrymen and fans.

Who you will know:

Alan Dzagoev – Russia will need a solid showing from its midfield in hopes of making it out of the group stage. Dzagoev is an attacking midfielder who can help out on defense just as much as he can lead a Russian attack. Even though given limited opportunities, Dzagoev knows how to score and will not hesitate to prove it.

SOUTH KOREA

Who you know:

Park Chu-Young – tied for most international caps at 64 and leading his squad with 24 goals, Park may just be the most valuable player on this Korean side. Having scored most of his career club goals from 2005to 2011, Park was picked up by English club Arsenal. Not given many opportunities to prove himself at Arsenal, Park was sent out on loan from 2012 on and has yet to achieve the level of his earlier success. Park will hope to use this tournament has the kick in the pants his career needs.

Who you should know:

Lee Keun-ho – Lee also has 64 international caps and is the 2nd leading goal scorer with 18 goals. Unlike Park, Lee has spent his career around Asian football clubs, but also possesses that ability to score. Lee will rely on his speed and key passing ability to create some golden opportunities for the Korean attack.

Who you will know:

Ji Dong-won – this 23 year old striker has already netted 8 goals in just 28 international appearances. Ji has supreme talent and the rare size (6’2”) of a Korean footballer. Ji recently signed with German force Borussia Dortmund and he will look to show the world just how deadly he can be.

World Cup Names To Know: Group G

Previously:

Group C Names To Know

Groups D, E, And F Names To Know

GERMANY

Who you know:

Bastian Schweinsteiger – about as rough and tough as the come, Schweinsteiger looks to punish any opponent that dare enter his midfield. Playing in over 100 caps for Germany and over 300 for his local club team Bayern Munich, Schweinsteiger’s over decade long career has made the world take notice of his talents. Dubbed the “midfield mastermind,” Schweinsteiger will slice and dice his way through most opposing defenses.

Philipp Lahm – another nation team member with over 100 caps, this 30 year old German captain still looks like a young man. At only 5’7”, many argue Lahm is undersized as a defender, but he utilizes his speed on the outside to punish teams that dare not respect him. Lahm’s corners and crosses should find their way to awaiting heads of the imposing German attackers

Who you should know:

Mesut Ozil – logging over 100 games for Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid will certainly help a footballer appear on many peoples radar. And that’s exactly what happened last year when he was scooped up by English club Arsenal in a deal which made him the most expensive German football player of all time. Ozil’s presence and creativity in the midfield is hard for most defenses to match and look for Ozil to make some headlines in Brazil/

Lukas Podolski – fellow Arsenal club member for Ozil, Lukas Podolski is another well-known and well respected German midfielder. Podolski will spend his time pushing up the left sideline and will punish other teams with his booming free kicks and surgeon like precision passing.

Who you will know:

Thomas Muller – Germany has never lacked goal scoring ability and this year will be no different. Muller is one of the most deadly headers of the ball in the world and is no stranger to scoring in the World Cup. After scoring 5 goals in 2010, look for Muller to pick up back where he left off and lead the German squad in goals again

Mario Gotze – another young, talented attacking midfielder, Gotze has made the most in his limited role with German club Bayern Munich. Always seeming to find the ball at his foot inside the box, Gotze has lighting quicks speed and finishing capabilities.

GHANA

Who you know:

Michael Essien – this extremely talented midfield has made a living on his ability to stretch the field and play from box to box. Most widely known for his time spent at England’s Chelsea club, Essien recently signed with Italy’s AC Milan after what is mostly considered and unsuccessful loan period to Real Madrid, Essien will look to revitalize his game in Brazil

Who you should know:

Sulley Muntari – another solid Ghana midfielder, Muntari is well known in Italy for his services at both Inter Milan and AC Milan. Muntari is 2nd in goals scored (20), but is the only midfielder in double digits. Look for Muntari to puts shots on target from anywhere on the pitch.

Asamoah Gyan – Ghana captain and leading goal scorer, Gyan will be heavily relied upon to by the Black Stars if they hope to escape the so called “group of death.” Scoreless draws are unlikely to help this team advance against the likes of Germany and Portugal, so look for Gyan to appear in the stat sheet more than once.

Who you will know:

Kwadwo Asamoah – Asamoah is a natural playmaker and will most likely be lined up on the outside of the midfield for Ghana. Look for him to sneak up a sideline and deliver cross after cross to Gyan.

PORTUGAL

Who you know:

Cristiano Ronaldo – another player who needs no introduction. The 2nd best player in the world, Ronaldo is an electrifying footballer. Ronaldo bests Messi in Spanish league goal-to-game ratio (a staggering 1.07), but falls in behind Messi in overall at a still impressive 0.73. Ronaldo has been unable to put the Portuguese side on his back and really advance them deep into the World Cup, but he will hope to change that this year with a bit more talent surrounding him.

Who you should know:

Nani – a poor man’s Ronaldo, or “Ronaldo-lite,” Nani is capable of producing wondrous balls from his winger positions. His youth, speed and athleticism have aided Nani into making his mark while at England’s Manchester United. Nani’s flopping style and penchant to try to do too much at times, leave him as a player with plenty of talent, but also plenty of room to improve.

Hugo Almeida – Almeida’s size and skillful finishes will draw plenty of attention from both fans and opposing defense this World Cup. Although he loses some of the spotlight to the likes of Ronaldo and Nani, Almeida will need to be on point in order to help Portugal advance from this group.

Helder Postiga – another pure striker much like Almeida, Postiga is a little less deadly in the air, but more than makes up for it with his right foot. Coring the 2nd most Portuguese goals behind wonderboy Ronaldo, Postiga adds to an already scary attack.

Who you will know:

Fabio Coentrao – with all of the Portuguese attack being named already, the attention turns to the back line. Coentrao has all the necessary skills to be an elite defender and also finds himself in the center of many attacks on his Spanish Real Madrid club team. Portugal will desperately need a strong defensive showing in order to play deep into this tournament, and Coentrao is someone they can rely on to lead them in the right direction.

UNITED STATES

Who you know:

Tim Howard – 100 caps as the United States goalkeeper and recent face of US soccer. Howard boasts the most impressive club record for any current American while playing in nearly 300 games for England’s Everton. Howard is one of the best keepers in this World Cup and will need to play like it if the US has ANY hope to move to the knockout stages. The US backline is largely untested, so will Howard be able to save America on the 1-on-1 attacks? Only time will tell.

Clint Dempsey – even at 105 international caps, Dempsey has largely played in Landon Donovan’s shadow in the American midfield. Dempsey is talented, fit, battle-tested and ready to lead this squad to glory. Having played for both English clubs Fulham and Tottenham, Dempsey recently returned home to play for American based Seattle Sounders. This is the tournament Dempsey can become a US soccer legend.

Who you should know:

Jozy Altidore – it would be hard for a follower of US soccer to not know who Jozy Altidore is, but he is not quite at that “world-wide” level. Jozy has played for Spanish, Dutch and English clubs and is known for his physicality. With a rare combination of size and sped, look for Jozy to out-muscle defenders for Portugal and Ghana in this group and out-run the German central backs.

Michael Bradley – a truly unheralded US midfielder, Bradley had impressive performances at Italian clubs Chievo and Roma. Like Dempsey, Bradley has returned to play his club soccer locally, even though it is across the border in Canada’s Toronto FC. Bradley will be able to run box-to-box and will make at least a big play or two in the American attack.

Who you will know:

Chris Wondolowski – even though Wondo is 31 years old, he does not have much experience for the national team. He does, however, have plenty of experience putting balls in the back of the net. Look for Wondo to be a nice relief for Jozy and make a big impact when he is on the field.

Aron Johannsson – Icelandic-American Johannsson will also look to make an impact as a substitute. Playing in his first World Cup, Johannsson will need to rise to the occasion and make the most of his opportunities here in Brazil. Look for Johannsson to try to make a claim to be a starter for the US team in World Cup 2018.

*Julian Green – Green has dual citizenship in the USA and Germany and has played on U16, U17, U18, and U19 squads in both countries. Look for Green to be a staple of the US midfield in the very near future.

World Cup Names to Know: Groups D, E, and F

Playing a little catch-up this morning in advance of today’s matches.

Previously:

World Cup Preview And Predictions

Group A Names To Know

Group B Names To Know

Group C Names to Know

COSTA RICA

Who you know:

Bryan Ruiz – captain, 2nd most international caps, and 2nd most international goals bring Ruiz to the forefront of Costa Rican soccer. Of course, playing on clubs such as England’s Fulham and the Netherland’s PSV certainly doesn’t hurt his chances of being the go to guy for this up and coming squad

Who you should know:

Celso Borges – the rock in the middle of the Costa Rican midfield, Borges will look to provide stability to both the attack and defense. Having gained most of his international fame while on the U-17 (under 17 years old) national team for Costa Rica, Borges failed to capitalize on that momentum and turn it into a booming career. Borges remains a solid player and will be heavily leaned on if Costa Rica hopes to advance out of this extremely challenging group

Who you will know:

Joel Campbell – the youngest Costa Rican to make to the journey to Brazil, Campbell shows plenty of promise as a 21 year old. He was called up to England’s Arsenal club at only 19, but has spent most of his club career on loan throughout Europe. His most recent stop at Olympiacos produced his best year by far while playing in 32 games and scoring 8 goals. It’s Campbell’s international career which shows the most hope scoring almost 10 goals each for his U17, U20 and current senior Costa Rican teams.

ENGLAND

England will also receive 2 players per category, not that they are on the same level as Spain, Brazil, et al, but rather because the Barclay’s Premier League (which boast almost all of these lads) is the most watched League in the world.

Who you know:

Steven Gerrard – the ageless wonder, Stevie G captains both the English national team as well as England’s club team Liverpool. The heart and soul of the midfield, Gerrard is looking to lead his squad to the ever elusive World Cup title. England is getting younger, but even though he is 34, Stevie G plays with the passion of a 20 year old. Wherever England hopes to go this World Cup, Gerrard will be the one leading them there, proving that You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Wayne Rooney – the Energizer bunny of an attacker, Rooney just doesn’t stop when it comes to attacking. Rooney’s headers and flying bicycle kicks make him a walking highlight reel and he will look to gather back some of that magic as he prepares to lead England past the Group stage.

Who you should know:

Frank Lampard – appearing to have gained quite a bit of weight recently, Lampard will still hope to be the vice-leader of an otherwise strong English midfield.

Daniel Sturridge – an up and comer for England’s Liverpool club, Sturridge is deadly with the ball on his foot. A natural finisher, he will look to punish any club that focuses too much on Wayne Rooney and should have plenty of chances to do so. Look for Sturridge to have have the most goals from an English striker this World Cup.

Who you will know:

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlin – fresh on the scene at only 20 years of age, The Ox has quickly made a name for himself as a part of England’s Arsenal club. Rivaled in thickness and pure muscle mass only by Brazil’s Hulk, Ox will make his presence known as soon as he enters the game.

Raheem Sterling – the youngest of English footballers at 19 years old, Sterling earned his spot on this squad with an impressive year at the English club Liverpool. His speed and versatility should present him with several playing opportunities, but the depth of talent in the English midfield could limit his exposure in this World Cup. If he does find his way on the pitch, rest assured he will be involved in the best of ways.

ITALY

Who you know:

Buffon – Buffon is the captain and backbone for the Azzurri and has been for many years.Buffon’s list of accolades is beyond impressive, leading his home club Juventus to 5 league titles and Italy to a World Cup title in 2006. Buffon suffered a leg injury in a friendly only weeks ago and it is rumored he could miss “significant time” in Brazil. If this is the case, the Italians are going to need help from its backup keepers in the worst of ways.

Andrea Pirlo – another Italian mainstay who has over 100 caps to his name, Pirlo is a natural born leader. Pirlo has toured Italy’s elite clubs having spent time at AC Milan, Inter Milan and now rests at Juventus. He has won 5 Serie Aleague titles, 2 Champions League titles and a World Cup. Pirlo is known as the greatest distributor of the ball in recent memory and he has a multitude of options on this current squad.

Who you should know:

Mario Balotelli – nicknames Super Mario, this bizarre creature is a walking headline. Not even his biggest haters can deny his raw talent and ability to break a game wide open, but much like Luis Suarez, Balotelli makes headlines by letting his emotions get the best of him. He will be the focal point of the Italian attack this World Cup and will hope that will be his only appearance in the media.

Daniele De Rossi – playing in only slightly fewer games than the aforementioned Buffon and Pirlo, De Rossi is the last of Italy’s older generation to make the World Cup squad.

Who you will know:

Lorenzo Insigne – Insigne, although very undersized at 5’4”, finds a way to score goals in almost every way imaginable. Using his speed while playing from either the left or right wing, Insigne seems to deliver crosses and touch passes. He may also find his way onto a free kick or two and opponents better not blink when the ball his on his foot.

*Salvatore Sirigu – Sirigu may go down as the hero or the villain of this World Cup. As of this writing, Buffon will almost certainly miss Italy’s game against England, which some have called a must win if Italy hopes to advance. If true, Sirigu will be making only his 9th cap for his nation’s team, although he has plenty of experience while serving as France’s PSG club goalkeeper.

URUGUAY

Who you know:

Luis Suarez – Suarez is a footballer who makes headlines not only for his rare soccer talent, but more so some of his on-field antics. Although he leads an extremely talented Uruguayan team in goals, Suarez more notorious events come from his purposeful handball to save a goal against Ghana in the 2010 World Cup (Uruguay would eventually win that game) and his biting off a bitter-rival Chelsea player at the end of the 2013 Premiership. Suarez has won the adoration of his countrymen and Liverpool supporters, but Suarez is without a doubt the most polarizing figure in all of soccer.

Who you should know:

Diego Forlan – aged 35 years old and with over 100 caps, Forlan has been the face of Uruguayan soccer for over a decade. Playing in his first World Cup in 2002, Forlan has impressed even the stingiest of football fans. Forlan’s venomous strikes on goal have heralded him a savior on his many club teams and for his nation. With the help of Suarez and Cavani, Uruguay may have the most deadly attack in Brazil.

Who you will know:

Edinson Cavani – also known as the Matador, Cavani is a true slayer of beasts. Boasting two separate 3 years stints on Italian clubs Palermo and Napoli, Cavanni has most recently moved to France’s Paris Saint-Germain where he plays alongside Sweeden’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Cavani is deadly from almost anywhere on the pitch and will be a key component in what could be another run at the semi-finals for Uruguay.

ECUADOR

Who you know:

Antonia Valencia – Far and away the most recognizable name on this rather faceless Ecuadorian squad, Valencia has been making a name for himself for quite some time. His breakthrough performance came while on loan to England’s Wigan Athletic, who later picked up his contract. After another stellar season, he was picked up by English powerhouse Manchester United, where he has played in 130 games and scoring over a dozen goals from his winger position.

Who you should know:

Edison Mendez – Mendez is the longest tenured Ecuadorian footballer having played in over 100 international matches. He spearheads the teams attack and will look to take most of the free kicks, from which he is known to be quite deadly. This will most assuredly be his final world cup, so it’s a safe bet that this 35 year old attacking midfielder will be leaving it all out on the pitch.

Who you will know:

Felipe Caicedo – at only 25 years old, this striker has the 2nd most international goals for his team. At only 20 years of age, Caicedo caught the eye of English giant Manchester City, who signed him in 2008 but sent out his services for much of his 3 years career with the club. Caicedo has a proven ability to score and he will most assuredly find the back of the net at least once during this World Cup.

FRANCE

While most likely not deserving of the “2 player” treatment, The Blues are getting it here as they are my dark horse team of the tournament. Losing Ribery is devastating, but I’ll stick to my guns and say they have a great chance to win the group, should easily win their Round of 16 game, and will be one stellar performance away from winning the Round of 8 and making it to the semi-finals.

Who you know:

Karim Benzema – much like the golfing adage that “chicks dig the long ball,” so too do they dig goal scorers. This is precisely what Benzema is – a world class goal scorer. He will not wow you with his speed, touch, or one-on-one moves, but he always seems to be in the right place at the right time to put the final (sometimes unnecessary) touch onto the ball to bury it in the net. With 130 club goals (72 at Spain’s elite Real Madrid) and 21 international, I introduce to you “Mr. Steal Yo Goal”

Patrice Evra – perhaps one of the best left backs in the history of the game, Evra and the rest of the French defense will be heavily relied upon this world cup. Playing almost 300 matches with Manchester United, Evra is rock solid on the back line. He will occasionally sneak up to put a shot on target and will be looking for his first ever French national goal in this year’s World Cup (Spoiler alert: he gets it).

Who you should know:

Bacary Sagna – while he may not have this distinction quite yet, I believe Sagna to be on the best right-backs in the world. It comes at quite the convenience that France has two of the best outside defenders on their squad, which is why they are poised for such a deep run this year. Sagna is a player that English club Arsenal can’t afford to lose and will need to sign him to a new contract before this World Cup, as he will be demanding a salary they cannot afford after the World sees his talents this Sumer. (Update – on day 2 of this World Cup, June 13th, Sagna was signed by the deepest-pocketed English club, Manchester City… called it?)

Franck Ribery – France suffered it greatest blow pre-Brazil when it was announced that Ribery would not make the trip due to an ailing back injury. Ribery is renowned for his service balls into the box and France will be looking to one it’s youthful midfielders to pick up the slack.

Who you will know:

Olivier Giroud – a true assassin in the air if there ever was one. Standing at 6’4”, Giroud will look like a man amongst boys against the Central and Southern Americans he faces in the group stage. Even few Swiss players can match his physicality and presence in the box. If France is going to put up some big point totals, this will be the man to get it done.

Mamadou Sakho – with opposing teams knowing how strong France’s outside backs are, many will try to attack the French goal head on. For those that try, they will be running into this monster. Preforming exceptionally well with new club Liverpool, Sakho is ready to rise to the occasion and shore up and already stout back line.

HONDURAS

Who you know:

Noel Valladares – the one man who can give Honduras a chance to advance will be none other than their last line of defense – the goal keeper. Having played in 122 international games, Valladares had an exceptional showing at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Holding opponents Switzerland to no goals, Chile to 1 goal, and eventual Champion Spain to 2 goals, Valladares did his part. Honduras will need a repeat performance from him as well as some offensive help in order to move on.

Who you should know:

Carlo Costly – the man who has proven he can score time and time again will need to do so once (or twice, or thrice) more to help Honduras win. Having scored 31 international goals, but 0 World Cup goals, Costly is poised and ready to break through.

Who you will know:

Jerry Bengtson – playing in his first ever World Cup, Bengtson is rather green behind the ears. Scoring almost 20 international goals in only 44 games shows that Bengtson has a nose (or head) for the goal. As mentioned earlier, if Honduras hopes to win, then they must score. Bengtson is the man ready to make that happen.

SWITZERLAND

Who you know:

Gokhan Inler – Swiss captain and central midfielder, Inler is a born leader. He will be the calming force in the middle of this potent goal scoring midfield. Having toured Swiss and Italian clubs over the past decade, Inler has seemingly settled down at Italian club Napoli. He leads his country with 74 caps and will be looking to lead the Swiss to the knockout rounds.

Who you should know:

Stephan Lichtsteiner – an attacking right-back currently playing for Italy’s Juventus, Lichtsteiner draws comparisons to “Forrest Gump” with his athletic attacks up the sideline. Nicknames “The Swiss Express,” this is one man opposing teams do not want to see barreling down on them looking for a chance to score.

Who you will know:

Xherdan Shaqiri – perhaps what Switzerland misses the most is a true presence in attack. While the left-footed Shaqiri is a true midfielder, his speed with and without the ball will allow him several chances to lead the Swiss attack. Look for Shaqiri to be all over the box as well as getting a look from a free kick in which a deadly left foot is required.

ARGENTINA

Who you know:

Lionel Messi – The greatest soccer player in the world, Messi is known worldwide. Scoring 243 goals in 276 matches with Spanish club Barcelona, Messi’s goal to game ratio is almost unheard of (Messi also has 26 hat tricks to his credit). For all of Messi’s accolades and club success, he has yet to lead his national team to glory even though scoring 38 goals in 86 matches. Messi will hope to live up to the high expectations in this World Cup and cement his national glory next to the likes of Diego Maradona.

Who you should know:

While a couple of the names could be argued for the “you know” list, I believe it only suitable for Messi to stand alone. Thus, this category will have an extra name or two on it.

Maxi Rodriquez – Argentine midfielder of yester-year, Maxi has had a grand club and national career. His notorious mid-range blast on goal may have lost some of their bite, but when he is on the pitch, he is still a threat to score from anywhere.

Javier Mascherano – another aging midfielder, Mascherano’s contributions cannot go unmentioned. A true leader in the midfield, Mascherano will spend most of his time tracking down opposing attackers. It is safe to say, however, that his defensive duties won’t keep him from taking a shot or two on goal.

Martin Demichelis and Pablo Zableta – not only to these two defenders play side by side for Argentina, they also fill the same roles for English club team Manchester City. If Argentina hopes to reach the finals, and it is assumed they can, these defensive pillars will need to be steady on the back line.

Who you will know:

Gonzalo Higuain – Higuain certainly needs no introduction as he surely introduced himself to the world playing for Real Madrid and netting over 100 goals. After recently being bought for 40 million euros, but Italian club Napoli, Higuain has taken a step out of the lime light. Higuain will be chomping at the bit to help lift his country, and himself, into the championship discussion.

Sergio Aguero – another striker who is not being introduced to the world, but certain to make the most of his chance to perform on the world’s biggest stage. Aguero joins countrymen Demichelis and Zableta on England’s Manchester City club team and has been a major contributor to Man City’s two recent BPL titles. Aguero will look to capitalize on every scoring opportunity he is presented with.

BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

Who you know:

Zvjezdan Misimovic – being the most capped player in the history of his nation and being 2nd in goals, Misimovic will look to solidify the midfield with his role as vice-captain. Spending his club career in Germany, Turkey and China, look for the 32 year old to regain a spring in his step while trying to help B&H exit this wide open group.

Who you should know:

Edin Dzeko – a diverse striker with both speed and size, Dzeko has scored goals in almost every way you can think of. Leading the Bosnian team with 35 goals, Dzeko has proven time and again he can deliver on the big stage. A fine 4 years at Germany’s VfL Wolfsburg, Dzeko was called up to the English league to play for Manchester City, where he has had an equally impressive run. Dzeko will not sneak up on any defender in this group, but with his skill set, he won’t have to.

Who you will know:

Miralem Pjaniic – as fine of an attacking midfielder as there is in this group, Pjanic will rely on his youth and speed to be a game changer in this World Cup. While not a pure goal scorer, his technical skill, stellar dribbling, and visionary passes will have Pjanic involved in nearly every B&H scoring chance.

IRAN

Who you know:

Javad Nekounam – with an astonishing 140 caps for his national squad, Nekounam has earned his captaincy with nearly 40 goals (note the 2nd most on the team is 10). From his central midfield role, look for Nekounam to blast some of his patented shots from long range.

Who you should know:

Karim Ansarifard – at only 24 years old, Ansarifard has already managed 42 caps. With a penchant for scoring, and scoring A LOT for his club teams, Ansarifard will look to reach double digit national goals with a strong performance in Brazil.

Who you will know:

Reza Ghoochannejhad – with a nickname like “Gucci,” you just know this kid loves the spotlight. Playing for 5 different clubs in the past 5 years, this 26 year old strike is certainly road tested. This stage is the chance Gucci has been waiting on to impress a club enough to secure a long time contract and he may do just that.

NIGERIA

Who you know:

John Obi Mikel – while helping to lead Nigeria to its 2013 Africa Cup of Nations title, Mikel is most widely known for his 8 year stay at English club Chelsea where he has played just over 200 games. Mikel will be all over the pitch from his central midfield role and could certainly help lead Nigeria to the knockout rounds.

Who you should know:

Peter Odemwingie – aged 32 years old and leading Nigeria with 10 goals, Odemwingie has also proven himself with club success. Bouncing around England the past 4 years, Odemwingie had his longest and most impressive stint at West Bromwich Albion. Wherever there is a scoring chance Nigeria, bet the house that Odemwingie will be nearby

Who you will know:

Ahmed Musa – riding an impressive 2 year career with Russian club CSKA Moscow, Musa is riding high coming in to this World Cup. One could certainly question how many true scoring chances Nigeria will muster, but Musa will find himself spearheading at least a few.

Victor Moses – listed as midfielder for the Nigerian national team, look for Moses to sneak up into his more comfortable winger position. Moses can move the ball from the backline to the attack with blazing speed. Having played for England’s U16, U17, U19, and U21 national teams, Moses chose to return to his birth country of Nigeria for this World Cup. Moses brings his vast experience to a rather inexperience Nigerian side.

World Cup Group C Names To Know

Previously:

World Cup Preview And Predictions

Group A Names To Know

Group B Names To Know

Group C

COLOMBIA

Who you know:

Radamel Falcao- one could argue that this is most devastating injury for any country leading up to the World Cup. Sure there are better players around the world, but the drop off from Falcao to his Colombian counterparts is devastating. Let’s face it: the only Colombians you have ever heard of are Juan Valdez and Pablo Escobar and while both offer their own unique “pick-me-ups,” neither can help Colombia reach the World Cup finals. Will Colombia advance past the group stage? Absolutely. Their 1st knockout stage match against England/Italy/Uruguay will mark the end of the line,

Who you should know:

Teofilo Guiterrez- having scored almost twice as many international goals as his remaining Colombian footballers, Guiterrez has proven his ability to rise to the occasion. His number will be called upon early and often and must prove that he can replace the attacking void left by Falcao.

Who you will know:

Jackson Martinez- Mark this as a “gut call,” but Colombia will have to score if they want to advance. There is no question that their defense is supremely talented and will keep them in most of the games they play. Someone will have to present a threat to opposing defenses and Martinez will be your man. Porto (Portugal) has produced some amazing players from their club (see Colombian striker Falcao) and a betting man should not feel hesitant to let his money ride on Martinez becoming the next B.M.O.C.

GREECE

Who you know:

Giorgos Karagounis – being the most capped player in the history of the Greece national team (135 to be exact), Karagounis has led an impressive club and international career. After superb 5 years at the local Grecian club Panathinaikos, Kara most recently spent time at England’s Fulham. At 37 years old and currently unsigned by any club, Kara will most likely bid adieu to the football world at the end of this Cup run.

Who you should know:

Dimitris Salpingidis – close your eyes and imagine a Grecian footballer and this is who you will see. Though short on stature, this Greek Adonis has been the face of a nation after scoring Greece’s first ever World Cup goal in 2010. Scoring again in Greece’s 2012 Euro Cup run, Dimitris could lead Greece to it’s first ever appearance in the World Cup knockout round.

Who you will know:

Konstantinos Mitroglou – while Greece lacks that one superstar, “Mitrogoal” will look to capitalize on the world stage. Having recently been called up to play abroad at Fulham, Mitroglou has the size and scoring ability to be an immediate game changer. His ability to find the back of the ole onion bag is unrivaled by his teammates and look for his touch to be the precursor to almost every Grecian scoring opportunity.

IVORY COAST

Who you know:

Didier Drogba – a man who truly needs no introduction. Drogba has been the heart and soul of the Ivory Coast. With over 100 caps and 65 goals for the Cote d’Ivoire, Drogba will catch the eye of every defender he faces. Scoring over 100 goal England’s Chelsea club, Drogba has been touring Chinese and Turkish clubs collecting his deserved pay-day. Standing at 6’2”, Drogba is literally head and shoulders above most Grecian and Japanese defenders and should have no trouble rising up to bury many headers during his group stage games.

Who you should know:

Yaya Toure – with a name like Yaya, it will not only be easy to spot him on the pitch, but also easy to cheer his name at home. Coupling his physicality with precise passing ability, Yaya is a force to be reckoned with. With his stellar play at Barcelona and Manchester City, Yaya will be a marked man in them midfield. One can expect that even the added attention won’t keep Yaya from booming one of his patented 30-40 blasts on goal

Who you will know:

Consider this a true toss-up between Saloman Kalou and Gervino. Both will likely be starting wingers outside of both Yaya (midfield) and Droga (striker), so it is anyone’s guess as to who will make the most noise. Kalou has had a more impressive run of goals recently at the French club Lille and amidst rumblings from Ivory Coast Coach Sabri Lamouchi that Drogba will have to earn his playing time (most likely idle threats), Kalou is more apt to fill that potential void. While Gervinho will most certainly make some waves on the outside, Kalou will be the one riding those waves in for a goal.

JAPAN

Who you know:

Keisuke Honda – after scoring the lone goal in Japan’s first ever World Cup win on foreign soil back in 2010, Honda propelled Japan to the knockout stages by scoring and assisting goals against Denmark. Wining two “FIFA Man of the Match” titles in his three group stage games, Honda almost led Japan to an improbable win over Paraguay in the Round of 16 before falling short 3-5 on penalty kicks.

Who you should know:

Yasuhito Endo – it’s not often that a player with 144 international caps is not the most well-known player on his team, but this is the case with Endo. This lack of notoriety is not a reflection on his skill, but rather his choice not to leave his home country to play club soccer. Endo is wildly popular in Japan after playing for over 13 years and 400 games for the local club Gamba Osaka. Endo’s veteran presence and stability while be key if Japan looks to advance to the knockout stages for the second straight attempt

Who you will know:

Shinji Kagawa – this 25 year old attacking midfielder is looking for a break through tournament. His amazing skill set led to an impressive two years at German based Borussia Dortmund. This performance was quickly noticed by English juggernaut Manchester United, who scooped the young lad up in 2012. Kagawa seems buried by talent at Man U, even though he has played in almost half of the club’s games since 2012. Brazil will be Kagawa’s chance to showcase his talents to the world.

World Cup Preview And Predictions

Brazil won its opening match of the World Cup yesterday 3-1 despite an own goal that gave Croatia the early lead, and the World Cup was off and running.

Big day today, with three games on tap – including Spain and The Netherlands.

Preview of each group, and predictions, are below.

By: Lucas Cole

Group A

Brazil (Manager: Luiz Felipe Scolari; Projected Formation: 4-3-3)

For decades, Brazil has been known for its free-flowing style in attack; this World Cup cycle, Brazil relies on a back line that is arguably the best in the world. Centerback and captain Thiago Silva, one of the best defenders in the world, is the rock in the back, and fullbacks Dani Alves and Marcelo are dangerous going forward. Defensive midfielder Luis Gustavo is one of the most underrated players in the world, and his work rate in front of the back four allows the forwards for Brazil to concentrate on attacking. Striker Fred’s breakout form has continued during recent friendlies, and the dangers caused by Neymar freely roaming the flanks are well-documented. Oscar, the playmaking midfielder, is the most important player of the tournament for Brazil. If Oscar’s on form and cutting through defenses with creative passes and runs, Brazil will build leads for its top-notch defense to protect. If Oscar struggles and Brazil can’t break down opposing defenses in the final third, right wing Hulk and his teammates can become too enamored with taking shots from distance, making an already-challenging path to the finals nearly impossible.

Croatia (Manager: Niko Kovac; Projected Formation: 4-4-2)

After a third-place finish at the 1998 World Cup, Croatia failed to escape the group stage in 2002 and 2006, then failed to qualify for South Africa 2010. The Croatians are back, however, and they have enough attacking talent to pose a real threat to return to the knockout rounds. Up front, Mario Mandzukic’s heading ability poses a major threat. He’s not a one-trick pony, though, as he works hard in defense and is dynamic with the ball at his feet. Behind Mandzukic is the most dangerous aspect of this Croatian team: the midfield. Luka Modric, the best player on the team, is a dribbling and passing wizard, capable of creating offense out of nothing. He can be useful defensively as well, if not always reliable. Ivan Perisic and Ivan Rakitic are both threats to create chances at any moment, with experience playing at big clubs in giant leagues (Borussia Dortmund and Wolfsburg, and Sevilla, respectively), but it remains to be seen if they can hold up defensively for an entire match against some of the better competition. The defense is full of lesser-known players, but Darijo Srna is the captain and leader in the back. Against some of the better teams, such as Brazil in the opening match, the midfield may have to sacrifice some of its attacking tendency to help prevent goals. If Croatia is able to create a goal or two off of counterattacks in those games, it could play the role of spoiler against a team or two that’s considered a contender.

Mexico (Manager: Miguel Herrera; Projected Formation: 5-3-2)

The loss of midfielder Luis Montes in a friendly leading up to the World Cup to a broken leg certainly stings Mexico’s chances of escaping the group stage, as Montes was the squad’s leading scorer during qualification. If they are to make up for the loss of Montes, Mexico will need Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez to rediscover his form of past years that established him as a star. Giovani dos Santos will join him in attack and is perhaps the most skilled player on the team. Midfielder Andres Guardado offers pace and skill on the left flank, while centerback Rafael Marquez is now 35 but offers experience in the back, as well as an aerial threat on set pieces. Midfielder Hector Herrera is a name to watch, and the rest of the squad is made up of players from Liga MX who don’t offer the same name recognition but have been Mexico’s most consistent and reliable players throughout an unusually tenuous qualifying campaign. If this team can find a way to click, the talent and skill is there to make a run and escape the group stage.

Cameroon (Manager: Volker Finke; Projected Formation: 4-3-3)

Cameroon is in a transitional phase that sees its top players, for the most part, before or beyond their primes. Striker Samuel Eto’o has had a long and celebrated career, playing at several top clubs in Europe, but has seen his form decline as he’s aged. Cameroon’s captain, Eto’o is now 33 years old and, along with winger Pierre Webo (32), provides something to think about for opposing defenses, if not striking the same fear into them he has in the past. Barcelona’s Alexandre Song and Sevilla’s Stephane Mbia provides Cameroon with a solid, if unspectacular, duo in the midfield, and Nicolas N’Koulou and Joel Matip form one of the tournament’s most talented partnerships in central defense. N’Koulou and Matip are still probably a cycle away from their primes, however, and can be given trouble by some of the more experienced attacking players. The defensive unit does have talent, so Cameroon could prove tough to score on; however, a lot would have to break right for the Cameroonians to progress past the group stage.

Group A Overview

The host nation is the odds-on favorite to hoist the trophy at the end of the tournament, but the pressure of winning a sixth world title on home soil could catch up to a squad still littered with young players. If the 2013 Confederations Cup, also hosted by Brazil, is any indication, these Brazilians won’t be rattled. Brazil put on a show for its fans last summer, solidifying its status as the team to beat this year. The path to the championship is arguably more difficult for members of Group A than any other group, but expect Brazil’s sensational ability to pressure defensively, combined with its irresistible individual creativity and skill in attack, to comfortably advance through the group stage.

While the Brazilians are the heavy favorites to win Group A, second place is up for grabs. Croatia’s individual talent and ability to create chances makes it the favorite to advance past the group stage, but Mexico and Cameroon both pose threats to steal points and find themselves through to the knockout rounds.

Projected final standings:

1. Brazil

2. Croatia

3. Mexico

4. Cameroon

Group B

Spain (Manager: Vicente del Bosque; Projected Formation: 4-3-3)

The defending world champions entered the 2013 Confederations Cup, held in Brazil, as the favorites. The Spanish team seemed invincible, having gone five years without suffering a loss in a meaningful match, until being dismantled 3-0 in the final by the hosts.

Now, the Spaniards still boast the same talent level, even if the core players are beginning to surpass their primes. Still, it seems as though Spain is being overlooked in favor of favorites Brazil, Argentina and Germany, as well as flavor-of-the-Cup Belgium. Spain, with its tiki-taka style of forming passing triangles and boring opponents into checking the stands for ladies a slick give-and-go or two leads to a scoring chance, is still as big a threat to win the Cup as there is in the tournament. This squad has as much experience playing together as any at the World Cup, and no group of players in the field has achieved nearly the same success as this one.

Captain Iker Casillas, despite his poor showing in the UEFA Champions League Final with Real Madrid, is expected to start in net. A recognizable, if not consistent, quartet of Juanfran/Azpilicueta, Ramos, Pique and Jordi Alba is expected to start in front of him; it isn’t clear who will start at right back. CB Sergio Ramos has been on a goal-scoring tear for club Real Madrid of late.

The midfield is unfair, to both opponents and players trying to crack the lineup; there are a plethora of world-renowned names in contention to start. In attack, Pedro and Iniesta seem to be the most likely names to grace the lineup as the wingers, while the Brazilian dual-citizen Diego Costa is the favorite to play center-forward.

Despite the aging of the core group of Spanish players, make no mistake: this is one of, if not the, World Cup favorites. Spain cruised through its qualifying group in Europe. Though Group B offers tougher competition, expect much of the same.

The Netherlands (Manager: Louis van Gaal; Projected Formation: 4-3-3)

The Dutch excited world fans all the way to the World Cup Finals in 2010, but experienced a much more disappointing campaign in Euro 2012. In Brazil to redeem themselves, the Netherlands boast one of the most dynamic attacking groups in the tournament. Right Wing Arjen Robben, despite ignoring his right foot for his entire career, uses pace and skill to cut in from the right and take advantage of the most dangerous left foot in world football. Robben, with the right service and support, is fast and skilled enough to create chances out of nowhere for himself or his country’s captain and leading scorer, Robin van Persie. van Persie, the Dutch Striker, is one of the more dynamic goalscorers in the tournament himself, despite an injury-riddled season at Manchester United.

Wesley Sneijder, Nigel de Jong and Leroy Fer will service and defensive support to the front three. Sneijder is one to watch on free kicks and set pieces. The Oranje aren’t without their own injury concerns, with starters Kevin Strootman and Rafael van der Vaart out for the tournament.

For all of the attacking talent, making the Dutch among the most exciting teams in the tournament, the defense is the biggest concern. The back four will feature several green players from the Dutch domestic league. Despite the talented individual defenders, the unit is unproven and won’t strike fear into any opposing attacks. The Oranje will aim to outscore opponents, a goal that is far from out of the question with the dynamic players they have at their disposal.

Chile (Manager: Jorge Sampaoli; Projected Formation: 3-5-2)

The Chileans offer a different look from most teams, relying on their outside midfielders to provide the majority of the attack. Midfielder Arturo Vidal is Chile’s best player and, combined with Juventus teammate Mauricio Isla, is the focus for Chile going forward. Strikers Eduardo Vargas and Alexis Sanchez are Chile’s biggest threats to score goals, while the back three, led by Gary Medel, will try to stay compact and frustrate opposing forwards. Keeper Claudio Bravo is the captain and he’ll control the defense, which needs to have a good tournament should Chile expect to advance.

Chile will enjoy more of a home-field advantage than the European favorites of the group, and the Chileans have the attacking talent to escape one of the toughest groups in the World Cup. The defense will need to be on form if Chile wants to advance past the group stage.

Australia (Manager: Ange Pastecoglou; Projected Formation: 4-2-3-1)

A qualifier out of Asia, Australia is at a major disadvantage in this group, or any for that matter. Forward Tim Cahill, the face of Australian soccer for years, is now 34 years old and reaching the point where somebody else will need to step up and take the lead. That person has not emerged, and Australia will struggle to earn any points in the 2014 World Cup, especially with Spain, Chile and the Netherlands so tightly contested. The other three members of Group B know they need to not only beat Australia but pad their goal differential stats as much as possible, so the Aussies will face a stiff test in Brazil.

Although Australia is a long shot to advance past the group stage, it could still decide who does. Cahill, along with captain Mile Jedinak and Mark Bresciano, both midfielders, could be good enough to steal a goal or two.

Group B Overview

Despite featuring aging stars, Spain is the still the team to beat in Group B. The biggest battle is for second place and a spot in the knockout rounds, between the Netherlands and Chile. The Oranje feature more prestigious names, but their unfamiliarity with South American soil as well as their poor showing in the most recent big tournament, Euro 2012, makes Chile the favorite to escape the group. Australia has little chance of placing in the top two, but could play a crucial role should it upset one of the top three, or even cause problems for one of them and affect the goal-differential tiebreaker.

Projected Final Standings:

1. Spain

2. Chile

3. The Netherlands

4. Australia

Group C

Colombia (Manager: Jose Pekerman; Projected Formation: 4-3-3)

Belgium is the popular pick as this tournament’s “dark horse,” but Colombia will be the best unsung squad in Brazil. The only hype surrounding this team is of its loss of its best player, striker Radamel Falcao. Another notable player, promising young forward Luis Muriel, was left off the squad; however, there is still plenty of talent in this squad to make a run and, with a little luck and a few breaks, Colombia could find itself challenging for the World Cup.

The two biggest strengths of this team are athleticism and defense. The back line of Zuniga, Zapata, Yepes and Armero could be the best in the entire tournament, and the midfield will lend plenty of help in defense.

There’s plenty of attacking talent as well, led by 22-year-old James Rodriguez. Freddy Guarin and Victor Ibarbo will also provide dangerous passes and runs, and the forward group is led by the experienced Teofilo Gutierrez. The loss of Falcao is certainly a big one, as he is one of the top-five scorers in the world, and it means Colombia will need a few more breaks if it wants to contend for the championship. With the defensive talent and experience they have, and the individuals talented to create goals, though, the Colombians can’t be counted out against any side in the world.

Greece (Manager: Fernando Santos; Projected Formation: 10-1-0)

The Greeks are known for their proclivity to commit their entire team to defending, which led them to a European Championship in 2004. Greece will likely set up in a 4-3-3 formation, with a heavy emphasis on defending. The forward group of Samaras, Mitroglou, Salpingidis and Gekas are fully capable of stealing a goal on the counterattack, and also have little problem tracking back to defend.

Captain Giorgos Karagounis and Kostas Katsouranis are older players but provide much-needed experience and leadership for the midfield, as well as the back line. Center-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos and fullback Vasilis Torosidis lead a defense that always proves difficult to find space against.

The Greeks will certainly cause problems for opposing attacks because of their defensive discipline, but they will need to find a few goals if they want to advance past the group stage.

Ivory Coast (Manager: Sabri Lamouchi; Projected Formation: 4-3-3)

There’s plenty of name-recognition on this Ivory Coast squad, led by the legendary forward Didier Drogba and The Elephants’ best player, Yaya Toure. Toure is the Lebron James of soccer, reminiscing of a thoroughbred racehorse in size and power, overmatching opponents physically and athletically while possessing the skill and vision to dance around them and set teammates up for scoring chances. Like Lebron, Toure can put the ball in the net, leading Manchester City with 20 goals.

Salomon Kalou, Wilfried Bony and Gervinho join Drogba in attack. Bony, coming off a breakout campaign with Swansea City, provides size and strength up front, even if he doesn’t start over the established Kalou, Gervinho and Drogba. Cheick Tiote and Max Gradel are the likely starters alongside Toure in the midfield, and both have two-way ability.

The biggest question for the Ivory Coast is on defense, where only the aging Kolo Toure is a world-established center-back. The rest of the backline must be on form and compact to prevent enough goals for the Ivory Coast to see an early exit.

Japan (Manager: Alberto Zaccheroni; Projected Formation: 4-2-3-1)

Japan was a popular team during the 2010 World Cup for its ability to score from seemingly anywhere on the field. Midfielder Keisuke Honda is now famous for his deadly free kicks from range. Midfielder Shinji Kagawa is among the most creative players in the game, capable of picking out the right final pass for a chance from all over the pitch. Atsuto Uchida and Yuto Nagatomo are dangerous fullbacks going forward, while Maya Yoshida anchors the defense. There isn’t much depth between the star players, however, so gaining enough points to advance past the group stage will prove difficult for the Samurai Blue.

Group C Overview

Colombia is clearly the deepest and best team in Group C, and the 2014 World Cup taking place in South America only helps its chances of placing first in the group. Colombia boasts the best back line in the group, and has plenty of goal scorers to accent it.

The battle for second place is much more intriguing, with the Ivory Coast leading the way. The Elephants have a lot of experienced attacking talent leading the way, with Yaya Toure, the best player in the group, pulling the strings from the midfield. Greece is always a wildcard with its ability to keep its defensive shape, while Japan can score goals out of nowhere with its quick-strike ability. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Greece advance, but expect the Ivory Coast to join Colombia in the knockout round.

Projected Final Standings:

1. Colombia

2. Ivory Coast

3. Greece

4. Japan

Group D

Uruguay (Manager: Oscar Tabarez; Projected Formation: 4-3-3)

If the Uruguayans have Luis Suarez, who joins Edinson Cavani as the best players on the team, they will likely go with three forwards; Diego Forlan would join them up top. If Suarez, who is fighting injury, isn’t fit in time, Uruguay will likely run a 4-4-2. Any combination of Forlan (the Golden Boot winner at the 2010 World Cup with the most goals scored), Suarez and Cavani provides Uruguay with one of the most formidable attacks in the tournament. How far they advance will depend on the Uruguayans’ midfield and defense, which have talent but can be inconsistent. Walter Gargano, Alvaro Pereira and Cristian Rodriguez are the likely starters in the midfield, with a good balance of defense and attack when they’re at their best. Diego Godin, one of the key defenders for Atletico Madrid this season, anchors the back line, which also features Diego Lugano, Martin Caceres and Maxi Pereira. Fernando Muslera is the keeper, and he’s a solid one.

Uruguay features a balanced team, with talented players across the board. Although Forlan is aging, he is still very skilled, while Suarez and Cavani have the ability to break down any defense in the world. The midfield and defense, despite their name recognition, need to be at their best if Uruguay expects to challenge for a chance to win the tournament. If they slip up, Group D is good enough to send them home before the knockout rounds.

England (Manager: Roy Hodgson; Projected Formation: 4-2-3-1)

England has plenty of quality players, it just hasn’t been able to break through on the biggest stage. Injuries to Arsenal midfielders Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain robs the English of two of its primary young threats on the flanks, but there is still a good balance of experience and youth, of athleticism and skill.

Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge are the biggest names at forward. Steven Gerrard is the captain and leader of the team, while he shares the midfield with a few young studs, such as Raheem Sterling, Ross Barkley and Jack Wilshere. Glen Johnson and Leighton Baines will start at fullback, while Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka will man the middle of the defense. While there’s talent in the back line, there’s also inconsistency, and the midfielders good enough to start may not be committed enough to cover them. As a result, England may struggle to score and defend at the same time.

The English team has a nastiness and physicality that may not be matched at the World Cup; the question is, can they score enough goals while defending at a high enough level to defeat some of the more technically-sound teams in the tournament and in their group.

Costa Rica (Manger: Jorge Luis Pinto; Projected Formation: 4-4-2)

The Costa Ricans are at a severe disadvantage talent-wise in this group, but they’ve proven to be tough to beat in CONCACAF qualifying and will be a tough out in Brazil. The captain is forward Bryan Ruiz, while Joel Campbell is one to watch for the future. Celso Borges will command the midfield, while Michael Umana and Junior Diaz lead the defense.

Costa Rica doesn’t feature any household names and relies on chemistry, but it’s dangerous to any team that takes it lightly. Like Australia in Group B, Costa Rica could be the team to decide who advances from a group made up of teams better than itself; unlike Australia, the Costa Ricans are good enough to steal a point or two in group play.

Italy (Manager: Cesare Prandelli; Projected Formation: 4-3-3)

Italy is the most prestigious team in Group D, and has the most talent and depth as well. Like Spain, the core group, especially in the midfield, is getting old. Like Spain, the older players still have plenty of quality to take this squad deep into the tournament.

Keeper and captain Gigi Buffon has been at the top of the game for more than a decade now, and defensive-midfielder Andrea Pirlo is an inventive passer, the puppeteer pulling the strings for Italy. Daniele De Rossi, Claudio Marchisio and Thiago Motta are among the several defensive-minded midfielders who excel in creating offense with key passes. The forward group is stacked, featuring Lorenzo Insigne, Antonio Cassano, Ciro Immobile. The best of the bunch is Mario Balotelli, a loose cannon that is capable of changing a match with a single touch. The defense is led by a trio of experienced Juventus players in Andrea Barzagli, Giorgio Chellini and Leonardo Bonucci.

The Italians have struggled in recent friendlies, as well as the qualifying campaign for the 2014 World Cup, but have risen to the occasion to become major factors in the biggest tournaments in recent years. Expect them to find their form at the right time and escape Group D.

Group D Overview

Italy is the deepest and most talented team, while Uruguay features a good, balanced squad with forwards that strike fear into opponents. England brings a squad with less talent and athleticism, especially with the injuries to Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain, but with physicality and toughness that could frustrate the other two favorites. Costa Rica will play an important role in this group, as it won’t qualify for the knockout rounds but has a chance to steal crucial points away from one of the favorites. Uruguay has the greatest potential to win a tiebreaker on goal differential, while Italy and England will focus on defense to win matches.

    Projected Final Standings:

1. Italy

2. Uruguay

3. England

4. Costa Rica

Group E

Switzerland (Manager: Ottmar Hitzfeld; Projected Formation: 4-4-1-1)

Switzerland benefitted from a relatively easy qualifying group, but still played its way into one of the top eight seeds in the World Cup. The Swiss won’t feature any household names, yet they play with great chemistry, and there are some very talented players in the squad, led by Bayern Munich’s winger Xherdan Shaqiri. Shaqiri possesses the pace and skill to become a star during this tournament.

Captain Gokhan Inler sets the wheels in motion for the attack from the midfield, and left midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta is capable of punishing defenses. Juventus Fullback Stephan Lichtsteiner will join Shaqiri in attack on the right flank, and offers a major weapon for the Swiss as well.

Those four players will be counted on to create most of the attack, while the rest of team does a great job with playing defense as a unit and frustrating the opposing offense. Switzerland was one of the best stories throughout World Cup qualifying, and has carried that momentum through the friendlies in preparing for the World Cup. In a Group E that lacks the star power that some of the other groups possess, the Swiss are in a great position to qualify for the knockout rounds.

France (Manager: Didier Deschamps; Projected Formation: 4-3-3)

Like Colombia, France will be without its best player throughout this tournament due to injury. Left wing Franck Ribery, a top-10 player worldwide, will be unable to play because of a back injury. The cupboard is far from bare for France, but replacing Ribery’s dynamic ability on the left will be difficult.

The new best player will be midfielder Paul Pogba, who led France’s U-20 team to a World Cup title last summer. Most of Pogba’s midfield companions are, like him, defensive-minded, but Mathieu Valbuena is the exception. Valbuena usually opts to create offense whenever he’s in possession, sending cutting passes and dangerous long-balls up the field. However, Deschamps has given him a role up front, because his high-risk, high-reward style often hurts France’s possession numbers.

At forward, strikers Karim Benzema and Olivier Giroud are best suited for the middle, while the young Antoine Greizmann offers a dynamic style most reminiscent of Ribery on the wing. The back four will feature Arsenal teammates Bacary Sagna and Laurent Koscielny, along with Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho and Manchester United’s Patrice Evra. Raphael Varane is the future for France’s defense, and will likely see some playing time.

France still has plenty of talent, but chemistry has been a big problem in recent tournaments, and the loss of Ribery doesn’t help its cause. If the French can pull together, they can make a run in the knockout rounds. Another lackluster performance, creating as many problems amongst each other as for the opponents, will send Ecuador through and France packing.

Ecuador (Manager: Reinaldo Rueda; Projected Formation: 4-4-2)

South America boasts five teams that are considered legitimate threats to reach the semi-finals; Ecuador is not among them. That’s not to say they don’t have the talent to escape Group E.

Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia is the best player on the team, and serves as captain. Joining him in the midfield is Edison Mendez, now 35 years old but one of the best players in Ecuador’s history and one of the leaders of this year’s squad. Jaime Ayovi and Felipe Caicedo are the strikers, and must be on form if Ecuador wants to gain enough points to advance. 34-year-old Walter Ayovi anchors a solid-but-unspectacular back line. There’s enough talent on Ecuador’s team to reach the knockout rounds, but Switzerland and France are better teams, and one of them must play poorly enough for Ecuador to take advantage.

Honduras (Manager: Luis Fernando Suarez; Projected Formation: 4-4-2)

Honduras is a solid team, but one that will be at a distinct disadvantage based on talent in Group E. Jerry Bengtson and Carlo Costly lead the attack, while Wilson Palacios and Oscar Garcia are the primary playmakers in the midfield. Hull City’s Maynor Figueroa is the best defender on the team.

Honduras doesn’t feature any well-known names, but it is a solid team capable of causing problems for the opposition. Switzerland, France and Ecuador each outclass Honduras, however, and anything but a fourth-place finish in Group E would be a surprise.

Group E Overview

Switzerland is the team with the best combination of talent and consistency entering group play, and are likely to advance to the knockout stages. France possesses the most talent by far, and if the French can find a way to play together, they will finish atop the group. Ecuador is the wildcard, more than capable of taking advantage if one of the top two slip up, especially on South American soil. Honduras will likely be on the outside looking in.

    Projected Final Standings:

1. France

2. Switzerland

3. Ecuador

4. Honduras

Group F

Argentina (Manager: Alejandro Sabella; Projected Formation: 4-3-3)

With a starting front line of Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain and Sergio Aguero, no team boasts an attack as dangerous as Argentina. Midfielder Angel di Maria has the best blend of offensive skill and defensive work rate in the world, while Fernando Gago and Maxi Rodriguez will battle it out to be the third midfielder beside di Maria and defensive specialist Javier Mascerano.

The defense is led by right back Pablo Zabaleta, but it becomes murky aside from him. Martin Demichelis will be one of the center backs, while the other two positions are up in the air. There are certainly worse defenders in the world to choose from, but the defense, at least on paper, is a major weakness for a team that’s considered a favorite to win the World Cup. Monaco keeper Sergio Romero isn’t among the best in the world at his position, but he’s good enough to win as long as the defense plays well in front of him.

There’s no question that Argentina is among the major players for the World Cup, but the defense is concerning. The offense is downright scary, though, so outscoring teams is a probability for Argentina until it reaches, at the very least, the quarterfinals, should Belgium advance that far. On South American soil, anything short of a semifinals berth will be a disappointment for Argentina.

Bosnia-Herzegovina (Manager: Safet Susic; Projected Formation: 4-4-2)

Bosnia-Herzegovina is one of the most underrated teams entering the 2014 World Cup. It features several dangerous attacking players, along with a couple of talented defenders. The Dragons aren’t quite a complete squad, and won’t challenge for the title, but they are a talented bunch capable of making a run and spoiling a superior team’s tournament.

The biggest names are up front in strikers Edin Dzeko and Vedad Ibisevic, but midfielder Miralem Pjanic is the best player on the team and a future star on the world stage. Zvjezdan Misimovic and Senad Lulic provide experience to the midfield.

Captain Emir Spahic leads the defense at center back, while his central partner, 20-year-old Sead Kolasinac, is a rising star. Sejad Salihovic and Avdija Vrsajevic are the fullbacks.

Bosnia-Herzegovina isn’t nearly as talented as Argentina, but the Dragons offer plenty to think about for opponents. Especially in a group that doesn’t feature a dangerous third team, it would be a surprise if Bosnia-Herzegovina failed to qualify for the knockout rounds.

Nigeria (Manager: Stephen Keshi; Projected Formation: 4-2-3-1)

Nigeria challenged itself against some of the best sides in the world in the friendlies leading up to this tournament, and has experience (although not positive experience) playing great teams in Brazil after participating in last summer’s Confederations Cup as Africa’s representative. If you’re looking for the ultimate dark horse, look no further, as the Nigerians have plenty of world-class players, but they’ll all have to be in the best forms of their lives to really make a splash in this tournament.

Vincent Enyeama is the keeper and captain, and Efe Ambrose, Azubuike Egwuekwe and Joseph Yobo will be three of the four defenders protecting him. John Obi Mikel will roam the midfield, providing cover for the back line, while Victor Moses will look to make runs forward. Emmanuel Emenike, Peter Odemwingie and Shola Ameobi are all forwards who are capable of grabbing a goal against nearly any defense.

Nigeria isn’t expected to get through Group F, but there is enough talent to do so if one of the favorites slips, or if the Nigerians play the tournament of their lives. As it stands, Nigeria will likely head home before the knockout stages, but this is a team with the potential to make a little bit of noise.

Iran (Manager: Carlos Queiroz; Projected Formation: 4-4-2):

Iran is one of the biggest underdogs at the 2014 World Cup, and the outlook is bleak for Iran to do much damage. Its best player is captain and midfielder Javad Nekounam, while Karim Ansarifard and Reza Ghoochannejhad are the strikers. Pejman Montazeri and Jalal Hosseini lead the defense.

Iran won’t likely make much noise at this tournament, but the accomplishment is being in Brazil for the Iranians. Unfortunately, the gap in talent is too large for Iran to advance to the knockout stages.

Group F Overview

Argentina is the clear favorite in Group F, and would be the favorite in most other groups as well. Bosnia-Herzegovina is the most likely team to join Argentina in the knockout rounds, but Nigeria will be waiting to pounce if they underachieve. It’s a great accomplishment for Iran to be in the field, and they will play with pride, despite being overmatched.

    Projected Final Standings:

1. Argentina

2. Bosnia-Herzegovina

3. Nigeria

4. Iran

Group G

Germany (Manager: Joachim Low; Projected Formation: 4-2-3-1)

Germany, another of the short list of favorites to win the whole thing, is not without its own injury concerns. Attacking midfielder Marco Reus, one of Germany’s top scoring threats, rolled his ankle and suffered tendon damage in his ankle in a recent friendly. The Germans already struggle to score at times because of their lack of a true striker, but make no mistake: this team is loaded.

The midfield is the greatest strength, with Mesut Ozil playing a central role. Ozil is one of the most captivating and magical players in the world, capable of creating something out of nothing at any moment. With Reus’s injury, Ozil may have to move to the flank, because wingers and strikers are running low for the Germans. Either Thomas Muller or Mario Gotze will likely be the striker, with the other playing on a wing. Ideally, Gotze will play up top as a false-9, while Andre Schurrle, Ozil and Muller will occupy the attacking midfield. The defensive midfield will be chosen between the versatile Toni Kroos, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Sami Khedira and Philipp Lahm, Germany’s captain and a fullback who has impressed in the defensive midfield for Bayern Munich this season.

The defense can be concerning at times as well, especially if Lahm is used in the midfield. Mats Hummels, a very talented center back, will be joined by Jerome Boateng, Benedikt Howedes, Per Mertesacker and the youngster Erik Durm on the back line. If Lahm plays right back, the defense becomes a strength. If not, it could let Germany down. Keeper Manuel Neuer is among the best in the game.

Germany is not only the favorite in Group G, but one of the favorites to win the tournament. This group is among the deepest in the tournament, but Germany should win it and advance to the knockout stages, where the Germans will be a very tough out.

Portugal (Manager: Paulo Bento; Projected Formation: 4-3-3)

The biggest name at this world cup, and the best player, is winger Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo has the best combination of size, quickness, pace, athleticism and skill this generation has seen, and he’s capable of scoring at any moment in any game against any team. The Portuguese captain will have the freedom to roam at forward, allowed to make runs anywhere across the pitch. Hugo Almeida, Helder Postiga and Eder are the other forwards for Portugal, and are much more static players, still with the abilities to net goals when set up properly.

The versatile Nani, an outside midfielder, is the outlier in the midfield because of his pace and athleticism; the rest of the midfield is strong, but with less-athletic, highly-skilled passers in Miguel Veloso, Joao Moutinho and Raul Meireles. Defensively, a back line of Joao Pereira, Bruno Alves, Pepe and Fabio Coentrao is very talented, if always teetering on the edge of being sent off by stupid challenges.

Portugal didn’t seem to play up to its potential throughout qualifying, having to beat Sweden in a playoff to qualify for the World Cup after losing its group to Russia. However, if the Portuguese, Ronaldo excluded, can find their form, this is a very talented and dangerous team. On paper, Portugal is probably the second most-likely team to advance past the group stages; however, the matches aren’t played on paper, so Portugal had better find its form. A 5-1 dismantling of Ireland in a friendly just before World Cup play begins is a good start.

THE United States of America (Manager: Jurgen Klinsmann; Projected Formation: 4-1-2-1-2)

The big news state-side has been the exclusion of arguably the best player to suit up for the U.S., Landon Donovan. Donovan is America’s best and most creative attacking player, always turns it up for the U.S. and will be sorely missed.

But the U.S. has done well without Donovan in recent matches, and is on a roll unlike any the country has seen entering a World Cup. Striker Jozy Altidore, perhaps the most important player for the U.S. in this tournament because of his ability to put the ball in the back of the net, finally got the monkey off his back by scoring tap-in early against Nigeria after going goalless since December 4 for club and country. He later chested down a fantastic long ball from midfielder Michael Bradley, made a move to create space, and fired home a laser finish that raised the hopes and dreams of soccer fans across America.

Altidore, and his forward companion and captain Clint Dempsey, are key to the U.S. hopes of escaping a tough Group G. If they can provide goals, with the service of Bradley, The Land Of The Free’s best player, it takes pressure off the rest of the team playing defense. Midfielder Jermaine Jones has been fantastic of late in his defensive role, patrolling the space in front of the defense to win the ball back. Jones, though, is always prone to a dumb foul and is a danger to be sent off at an inconvenient time. Alejandro Bedoya and Graham Zusi have emerged as the favorites to start on the outside of the midfield.

The defense has started to gel lately, with fullback Fabian Johnson leading the way. A fantastically talented two-way player, Johnson is a danger to the opposition on both ends of the field. Geoff Cameron and Matt Besler have formed a surprisingly solid central defense, while the aging-but-athletic Damarcus Beasley will start at left back. Keeper Tim Howard will try to save whatever shots get through between screaming matches with his defenders.

The U.S. has the least individual talent in the group, especially without Donovan, but has been playing a good brand of soccer throughout the past two years. Riding high on that momentum, the Americans expect to advance through the group, and can do so with a few breaks. It won’t be easy in likely the most balanced group in the World Cup, but the U.S. has a decent shot at playing into the knockout rounds. And if they don’t make it through Group G, at least the Americans get to return to the greatest country on Earth.

Ghana (Manager: James Kwesi Appiah; Projected Formation: 4-4-2)

Ghana, the Achilles Heel for the USA in the past two World Cups, was fatefully placed in America’s group again. Forward Asamoah Gyan, the Ghanaian captain, has been a thorn in the U.S.’s side, along with several other clubs and countries throughout his career, and returns as Ghana’s top threat to score goals. Majeed Waris and Jordan Ayew join him up front.

The midfield is the strength of this Ghana team, with Michael Essien, Kwadwo Asamoah and Sulley Muntari playing more defensive roles. This frees Kevin-Prince Boateng and Andre Ayew to go forward and create problems for the opposition. Boateng is the most dynamic player on the team and a real problem when he’s playing well.

The back line is the weakness in Ghana’s team, and Appiah may call upon Kwadwo Asamoah to play in the back four, as he did in the most recent friendly. John Boye, Harrison Afful, Samuel Inkoom and Jonathan Mensah are the other primary options in defense.

Ghana has a lot of talent in its team, and is a real threat to escape the group stage. If Boateng, a real wildcard, and the defense play well, Ghana could find itself in the knockout rounds. It will be an uphill climb, but the Ghanaians are fully capable of sending Portugal and the USA packing earlier than they hope.

Group G Overview

Group G is the most balanced in the 2014 World Cup, with each of the four teams having legitimate hopes of advancing. Germany possesses the most talent, and is a favorite to not only win the group but advance to at least the semifinals. Portugal is second in the talent standings, but have a few chemistry kinks to work out. Ghana has the individual talent to advance, but must play well together to achieve the results they want. And the United States are balanced and on-form, and expects to continue its winning ways.

    Projected Final Standings:

1. Germany

2. Portugal

3. United States of America

4. Ghana

Group H

Belgium (Manager: Marc Wilmots; Projected Formation: 4-3-3)

Belgium has quietly formed one of the most talented and deep squads in the world over the past few years. It is unclear which formation they’ll fall into, as top forward Eden Hazard was unavailable throughout qualifying due to injury. Without knowing the Belgians’ formation, it’s still easy to name the laundry list of players who can make an impact for them at the World Cup.

Striker Christian Benteke will miss the World Cup with a ruptured Achilles, but Romelu Lukaku will capably take his place. Eden Hazard is a left wing on par with Ribery and Ronaldo in terms of quickness and skill, and can create chances out of nothing. Kevin De Bruyne is dangerous on the right side, while Kevin Mirallas and Dries Mertens offer dynamic skillsets themselves.

Alex Witsel and Marouane Fellani serve as good defensive midfielders, while Mousa Dembele will back them up. Steven Defour is a good two-way midfielder.

The defense is led by captain and center back Vincent Kompany, one of the best two or three defenders in the world. Thomas Vermaelen or Daniel Van Buyten will serve as his partner in central defense, while Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld are the favorites to start at fullback.

Belgium has become most people’s “dark horse” for the 2014 World Cup, but that title does this squad a disservice. Make no mistake, Belgium is talented and deep enough, with plenty of individual ability, to be one of the favorites. With such an inexperienced group, winning the whole thing will be difficult, but the Belgians will be very tough to beat in the knockout rounds.

Russia (Manager: Fabio Capello; Projected Formation: 4-1-4-1)

Russia surprised by winning their European qualifying group over Portugal, but will be without captain Roman Shirokov. Russia is another very good team that lacks any big names, relying on chemistry and player roles.

Forwards Aleksandr Kokorin and Aleksandr Kerzhakov are the threats to score goals. Igor Denisov and Sergei Ignashevich will serve as defensive midfielders and captains, while Yuri Zhirkov and Alan Dzagoev serve as other goal scorers in the midfield.

Aleksei Kozlov and Vasili Berezutski lead the defense. Russia plays tough defense in front of keeper Igor Akinfeev, making it difficult to beat when it can poach a goal or two. Russia is a very cohesive unit, and one that makes it difficult on whoever they play against to win. The Russians lack of talent keeps them from being a contender to advance deep into the tournament, but they should escape a pretty light Group H.

South Korea (Manager: Hong Myung-bo; Projected Formation: 4-2-3-1)

Most Asian qualifiers don’t offer much of a threat to advance past the group stage, and South Korea is no different. However, despite their lack of individual talent, there’s a reason the South Koreans made it to Brazil. Park Chu-Young is the likely starter at striker, while being fed by attacking midfielders Son Heung-Min, Lee Chung-Yong and captain Koo Ja-Cheol.

The defensive midfield is led by Ki Sung-Yeung, while the defense is anchored by center back Kwak Tae-Hwi.

South Korea will likely feature an open playing style, susceptible to being scored on. It’s unlikely that the South Koreans will advance past the group stage, but they shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Algeria (Manager: Vahid Halihodzic; Projected Formation: 4-3-3)

Algeria is the biggest threat to Belgium and Russia to qualify for the knockout rounds, and there’s a lot of talent on this squad, especially in the midfield. Sofiane Feghouli and Medhi Lacen. Madjid Bougherra is the captain and leads the defense, while Mehdi Mostefa, Carl Medjani and Djamel Mesbah, among others, offer additional defensive support.

Islam Slimani and El Arbi Hillel Soudani are the best strikers, two names for opposing teams to keep track of.

Aside from Feghouli, who is a fixture in Valencia’s midfield, there aren’t many notable names in Algeria’s squad; however, the Algerians have a dangerous and tested group, and one who won’t go away easily. Belgium and Russia are the heavy favorites to advance, but Algeria is a team to be reckoned with.

Group H Overview

There’s no question that Belgium is the best team in Group H, and it would be a surprise if the Belgians didn’t finish first. Russia is the clear-cut second-best team, and should take second place and a berth in the knockout rounds. Algeria is good enough to take advantage should Russia or Belgium fall on its face in the Brazilian heat and humidity, while South Korea seems likely to finish in fourth.

    Projected Final Standings:

1. Belgium

2. Russia

3. Algeria

4. South Korea

World Cup Overview

Despite rumors circulating about the potential downfalls of the 2014 World Cup, Brazil should be a fantastic host, showcasing its well-off economy, soccer-breathing natives and gorgeous scenery. With such a unique and fun-loving culture, the world won’t be able to wait the two years until returning to Rio de Janeiro for the Summer Olympics in 2016.

The host nation has high expectations for its World Cup squad, but an incredibly dominant Confederations Cup in 2013, along with a difficult draw in the elimination brackets, lead to a little bit of slack for Brazil’s squad and its manager, Luiz Felipe Scolari. There’s more of an optimistic pressure on the hosts, knowing that their team is among the best, but isn’t a clear-cut favorite by any means.

Fellow South Americans Argentina boast the second-best odds of winning, while Colombia and Uruguay are major threats to anybody they play against. If the defensively-loaded Brazilians don’t win the Cup, the offensive juggernauts Argentina are in the mix to hoist it, with an especially interesting final should the two South Americans meet.

No European nation has ever won the World Cup in South America, but Spain and Germany are the favorites to end the drought. Spain is twice the defending European Champions and the defending World Champions, while Germany has a similarly strong midfield, while offering a more dynamic style that could match up better against some of the more fluid South American sides. Belgium is another talented and deep European team that has a chance to challenge the best for the Cup.

Brazil, Germany, Spain and Argentina are heavily favored to reach the semifinals, while Belgium, Colombia and Uruguay are the next men up should one of the top teams falter. Neymar has a great opportunity to continue his work from the past year towards becoming one of the best players in the world, while Lionel Messi looks to lead Argentina to a World Cup for the first time after a series of disappointing performances on the world stage. Spain’s endless squad list of notable names is reinvigorated by center forward Diego Costa, a Brazil native who will play for Spain for the remainder of his career, while Germany will rise and fall with Mesut Ozil.

There are several notable names that have been already unfortunately excluded from the World Cup, including Franck Ribery of France and Radamel Falcao of Colombia. If Luis Suarez, a Uruguayan, is healthy, he could be good enough to lead his country to a berth in the semifinals or better. Cristiano Ronaldo, the top player in the world, is surrounded with a good enough supporting cast to allow him to carry Portugal to the semis– and a chance at the Cup– because of his ability to cause problems for any defense.

Although there are several reasonable outcomes, and there are no perfect teams who are heavy favorites, this should prove to be one of the most exciting World Cups in recent history. However, the chalk final four of Brazil, Germany, Spain and Argentina is a good bet, with Brazil and Spain meeting for the final in a rematch of last summer’s Confederations Cup, when Brazil dismantled Spain for a 3-0 victory, ending Spain’s reign at the top of world football.

I see a similar result, with Brazil’s incredibly deep, balanced and talented squad riding the wave that the home crowds will provide to a record sixth world title. Captain Thiago Silva will hoist the World Cup Trophy, the most prestigious in the sport, and 22-year-old Neymar will stake his claim as the most dynamic player in the world.

World Cup Group B: Names To Know

See Group A from earlier.

Group B

AUSTRALIA

Who you know:

Tim Cahill- an ageless wonder and 34 years old, Cahill currently plays stateside with New York’s Red Bulls. It almost seems like this is Cahill’s farewell tour, but he was known to do some serious damage during his 8 years at England’s Everton club team. Cahill’s international career has also been quite impressive while scoring 32 goals in 69 appearances with the Socceroos

Who you should know:

Mark Bresciano- 2 months Cahill’s younger, but 5 international caps his elder, Marco has is making his 3rd World Cup appearance for the boys from down under. Marco has climbed the ranks from Australia’s Under-17 squad and competed extensively in Italy’s Serie A league.

Who you will know:

Mile Jedinak- captaining both the Australian nation team and his English club Crystal Palace, Jedinak is the bridge between the young core of Socceroos and its aging starters. With many miles still in the tank, Jedinak helped Crystal Palace promote to the Barclay’s Premier League after the 2012-13 season and led his squad to a middle table finish in 2013-14.

CHILE

Who you know:

Alexis Sanchez- it’s hard to think about Chilean football and not think of Sanchez’s contributions over the past 8 years. A goal scoring machine, Sanchez caught the ever insightful eye of Spain’s Barcelona. While leading an impressive stint at Barcelona, Sanchez will have to get in line for media time at Barca behind the likes of Argentina’s Lionel Messi.

Who you should know:

Artulo Vidal- nicknamed the Warrior, Vidal may just be the best, but least known footballer in the world. Starting for Italy’s Juventus (loving known as the Old Lady), Arturo wreaks havoc in the midfield. Vidal will be the key to helping Chile defeat it’s fellow Group B giants in Spain and the Netherlands.

Who you will know:

Arturo Vidal- this may be a cheat putting him here, but I can’t think of anyone who may gain more fame from helping his team advance to the knockout rounds of the World Cup. While there are many other names that may emerge from this talented roster, Vidal will be talked about around the water coolers for at least the next 4 weeks.

NETHERLANDS

Another giant of the football world which will receive 2 players per category

Who you know:

Arjen Robben – the face of the Dutch, Bayern Munich and the X-men, Robben amazes soccer fans from around the world. Ok- so maybe he is not an original X-men member, but you can’t tell me he doesn’t look like Professor Xavier minus the wheelchair. If there is an honor out there, Robben has helped to win it. The lone achievement Robben has not been a team member up is that elusive World Cup title and after finishing as the runner up in 2010, Robben and his left foot will look to rewrite that script.

Robin van Persie – thought of as possibly the best finisher in the world as recently as last year, van Persie arguably struggled in last year’s role as the primary Man United option. van Persie is no stranger to the back of the net and there is no doubt he will be infuriating many opposing goalkeepers down in Brazil.

Who you should know:

Wesley Sneijder – with his best years behind him, yet only 30 years old, Sneijder was once one of the world’s elite. Working wonders in his time at Ajax (Netherland’s best football club), Real Madrid and Inter Milan, Sneijder has been around the block and back. He will no doubt deliver some jaw-dropping crosses, but seems to have lost a step in defense.

Rafael van der Vaart – unfortunately for both van der Vaart and the Netherlands, he was a late scratch from the Brazil roster. His impact and history for the national team cannet be ignored, thus earning the brief shout-out

Who you will know:

No list of the force from Holland would be complete without mentioning Nigel de Jong, Dirk Kuyt and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, being 29, 33, and 30 years old, respectively, leaves much desire of me from mentioning them as the stars of tomorrow. While it’s not just their age, it is extremely hard to envision a revitalization of their career. The biggest question mark for the entire tournament comes from the Dutch defense. Of the young core, Daley Blind is poised for the breakout. Switching between Left-back and a defensive midfielder, Blind will have opportunity, coupled with the size and talent to rise to the occasion.

SPAIN

The only team who probably deserves 3 people in each category, La Roja will be looking to defend their title and refill the World Cup with what I can only assume was an abundance of Sangria

Who you know:

Andres Iniesta – a one man wrecking crew that can cut through a defense with the skill and poise of a world class surgeon. Opposing teams will be keeping tabs on Iniesta at all points during the game. Having every tool necessary to be an elite midfielder, the only thing Iniesta needs may be a bigger trophy case.

Xavi – the yin to Iniesta’s yang, Xavi is equally as talented as perhaps an ounce more deadly. Xavi gets the edge when it comes to free kicks over Iniesta, but that gap is not huge by any means. When (not if) Spain has a free kick, DO NOT leave your seat.

Who you should know:

There is no way any writer can do this section justice. While Iniesta and Xavi may separate themselves above other Spanish footballers, not only is that margin paper thin, but the next grouping is almost half a dozen deep. Names to know by position:

GK – Iker Casillas. Captain and second to none in the world at his position

Defender- Sergio Ramos & Pique. As formidable as it comes. Mighty Ducks Bash Brothers, anyone?

Midfielder- Cesc Fabergas & Xabi Alonso. Seriously… deepest midfield in the world.

Forward- Fernando Torres & David Villa. Relentless scoring from ANY angle

Who you will know:

Diego Costa – if there is one “future star” you can take to the bank, it is this guy. Leading his home club to an improbably Champions League final, only a hamstring injury was able to slow him down. It’s rumored he is fully healed, and if that is the case, Spain is a lock for semi-finals or beyond. Costa will have teams salivating to pick him up once his contract with Atletico expires, or may just even buy him out as early as late July.

The World Cup Starts Today: Group A Players To Know

Every four years.

Hard to believe four years have passed since Landon Donovan’s iconic goal in group play that send America to the quarterfinals in 2009. Still seems like it just happened.

But it has been four years, and now the World Cup is back. We have a couple of guys on staff (Brad Jones and Lucas Cole) for the next few weeks who will be helping bolster our World Cup coverage.

Starting with this, a team-by-team look at players you know, players you should know, and players you will know by the end of group play.

Group A

BRAZIL

As with the rest of the great teams, Brazil has too many household names and will have two players for each category

Who you know:

Neymar- With the eyes of the world falling on Brazil, it’s safe to say that at least one eye from every soccer fan worldwide will be on Neymar. The host nation’s all-star player is poised for a tournament that could define his career. While he needs no further introduction and his status among the world’s elite is not in question, nothing sets a player up for immortality more than international glory- ESPECIALLY when it is in his own backyard.

Dani Alves- Turning to Brazil’s backline, Dani Alves is a name even novice Soccer names may know. Whether through his multiple Champion’s League titles with Barcelona, 4 La Liga Championships, or finding himself as an unfortunate prime target for racism, Alves has made headlines. Is he the best Defender on Brazil? Absolutely not, but he always seems to find the spotlight.

Who you should know:

Thiago Silva- It’s hard to believe that the Brazilian wearing the Captain’s armband needs any introduction, but a central defender doesn’t always the make SportsCenter’s Top 10. Silva may be one of, if not the, best central defenders in the world and he will be vital to Brazil’s success when facing the offensive juggernauts Brazil must go through to reach the World Cup finals.

David Luiz- While bearing a striking resemblance to The Simpson’s Sideshow Bob, his talent is without question. Another central defender/defensive midfielder, Luis will make his presence known while stopping opponent attacks and while creating his own scoring opportunities.

Who you will know:

Ramires- barely beating out his Chelsea counterpart Willian, Ramires will be the most deadly midfielder Brazil has to offer. Hard to stop with the ball on his foot or finishing goal scoring opportunities, Ramires will become a “Who you know” for Brazil post World Cup 2014

Oscar- this may be a stretch as his goal scoring opportunities may be limited, but it is hard to ignore the pure talent possessed by this attacking midfielder. When pressed to score, Brazil will surely throw Oscar up on the wing and so many of his crosses are a thing of beauty.

CAMEROON

Who you know:

Samuel Eto’o- and rightfully so’o. No footballer has brought more pride or national notoriety to Cameroon than Eto’o. Few boast a club career as impressive as Eto’o boasting stints at Barcelona, Internazionale (Inter Milan) and Chelseas. 3 World Cup appearances, an Olympic Gold medal and 56 international goals for Cameroon later, Eto’o will be looking to make a statement in possibly his last World Cup appearance

Who you should know:

Nicolas N’Koulou- a rising star defender, N’Koulou piqued the interest of several big name clubs after an impressive run at Monaco. Finally landing in Marseille, a famous French club, N’Koulou has lived up to the billing as a premier Cameroon defender.

Who you will know:

Joel Matip- born in Germany, Matip has a German mother and Cameroonian father, Matip held himself off of the Cameroon national team in hopes of being called up by the German squad. Committing to the Cameroon team since 2010 and being a key player for the German based club Schalke 04, Matip will be looking to make a name for himself this year.

CROATIA

Who you know:

Luka Modric- the most famous current Croatian was made most famous during his years at England’s Tottenham Hotspur. The people paying most attention to his success were his current bosses at Real Madrid. Modric continues to be among the best at his position, even amongst the worldwide names he shares the Real crowned jersey with

Who you should know:

Ivica Olic- an aging striker known for his “bulldog-like” approach. He always finds himself near the action and could win a game for Croatia in the blink of an eye

Who you will know:

Ivan Rakitic- younger than most of his international mates, at 26 years old Rakitic still has many good years in front of him and you assume at least one more World Cup. Being recently named the Captain of the Spanish Club Sevilla, Rakitic had a very strong year which will inevitably spill over to this tournament.

MEXICO

Who you know:

Chicharito – Javier Hernandez has found most success while wearing the Manchester United kit. He wears that jersey with pride while being the first Mexican to ever do so. Chicharito has certainly helped the Red Devils forget about losing their prized Cristiano Ronaldo to right before his arrival in England.

Who you should know:

Andres Guardado- with over 100 international caps to his name at only 27 years old, Guardado has been a Mexican main-stay at this stage. Playing in his 3rd World Cup, Guardado will certainly resume his deadly assault of both assists and goals.

Who you will know:

Giovani dos Santos- this spot would most certainly have been filled by Luis Montes had he not fractured his leg weeks ago in an international friendly. dos Santos is more than capable of holding his own in the Mexican attack and will need to perform in order to draw attention and double teams away from Chicharito.

May Music Recap

</xml><![endif]-->

May was a good month for music. Borderline my favorite artist Conor Oberst came out with an outstanding second solo work that continued his path into folk with his unmatched songwriting. Along those same lines were Neil Young and Jessica Lea Mayfield. On the more fun side was Chromeo and the Roots. Lastly, even though the original Thickfreakness era Black Keys are gone and never coming back it appears, I liked Turn Blue better than the past two Black Keys records. Still think they need to get away from so much Danger Mouse produced sound.

Here is what I liked this month:

CONOR OBERST!!! – Upside Down Mountain

The Roots - ….And then You Shoot Your Cousin

The Black Keys – Turn Blue

Sharon Von Etten – Are We There

Neil Young – A Letter Home

Chromeo – White Women

Jessica Lea Mayfield - Make My Head Sing

Here’s what I’ll probably forget:

Coldplay – Ghost Stories

The TuNe-yArDs – Nikki Nack

The Swans – To Be Kind

What are we looking forward to this June? The frontman for one of my favorite bands (The Walkmen) has his first solo album - Hamilton Leithauser. The pretty harmonies of First Aid Kit, the unpredictable folk of my 2012 top album winner The Felice Brothers, the rock icon himself Jack White has his second record, the always underrated The Antlers and finally the how much should we hate her sounds of Lana Del Ray.

Should You Attend Bonnaroo?

Excited to continue my series on nearby music festivals because now we get to ask the important question – Should I go to Bonnaroo? If you keep up with music at all, you’ve heard of this place. It’s in the middle of nowhere southern Tennessee and is considered amongst the top (if not the top) U.S. festival each year. This coming year marks my fifth straight in attendance and it’s not for everyone. With so much information to cover, I’m going to use a question and answer style to help you decide if attending is right for you and your loved ones.

ARE YOU NERVOUS ABOUT CAMPING? Look, this isn’t solo camping in the Alaskan Wilderness. There are food stations and a general store. But you do need an adequate camp site with plenty of shade. One year two guys from Canada showed up with a tent and two chairs. That’s it. They would sit outside their tent and fry like bacon. Bring things that make your stay more comfortable. I prefer a cot because sleeping on the ground hurts. DO NOT GENERAL ADMISSION CAR CAMP. I can’t stress this enough. You have two viable options – Tent only or Groop Camping (costs extra). Also – pay for showers. It’s worth it.

DO YOU NEED MORE THAN THREE – FOUR HOURS OF SLEEP A NIGHT? Your typical day goes like this: the hot TN sun overhead at 7 a.m. forces you out of your tent. You try to sleep in a chair in the shade until about ten or so. Then you head into “centeroo” (the stages, vendors, etc. area) around eleven since music starts before noon each day. You typically stand/walk the rest of the day. Music ends around 4:00 a.m. each night. You go to bed in your tent. Rinse, repeat.

CAN YOU BE WITHOUT YOUR PHONE FOR A WEEK? This is important because although everyone has their phone at the festival, there are two forces working against you. One is terrible service. I haven’t been able to send/receive text messages ever inside centeroo. *SIDERANT* Which sucks because a few years ago Bonnaroo went to waiting and sending “alerts” about cool impromptu things happening during the fest on their twitter feed. TWITTER DOESN’T WORK ON THE FARM. Because of this stupidity, I missed a secret Deer Tick show after midnight where they performed only Nirvana songs. *ENDRANT* Second, it’s a losing battle keeping that thing charged. Nothing makes me hate humanity more than seeing people wait in lines for hours and hours to get to drop off their phone at a charging station. Seriously, stay at home.

ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH TENNESSEE WEATHER IN JUNE? It’s going to be hot. The only question is how hot. The first year I went temps were in the 100s and it felt like the end times. In 2012 it was in the mid 80s. You can always count on the humidity, it’s like that guy at work who tries to talk to you about Big Bang Theory reruns. What you don’t want is wind gusts at the end of the festival. Because even though there is grass planted when you arrive, by Saturday it’s all gone and that wind triggers dust-storms. Tie down your campsite good because winds were so bad one year it was flying tents/canopies far, far away. Two out of the last three years there has been a rain storm. Here’s the god’s honest truth – I know you are excited to play dress up Hippie, we’ve all been there. But dress comfortably above all else. It’s not a damn fashion show and you sure as hell aren’t going to out-weird anyone at this fest.

CAN YOU HANDLE THE HIGH-SCHOOLERS? The high school kids are by far my least favorite Bonnaroo attendee group. They are just awful and their parents should be sent to Alcatraz. You’ll recognize them by lack of clothing, glow-in-the-dark body paint and unable to handle their party favors.

YOU LIKE STANDING IN TIGHT GROUPS OF PEOPLE? Look, I’m tall. At least I can see over and not start to panic after a while. But still, it is uncomfortable. You stand in groups before shows and during shows. As the festival has become more crowded, it is necessary to get to stages earlier to get a good spot but this means rubbing elbows with the masses.

CAN YOU CONFRONT YOUR FEAR OF OTHER PEOPLE’S POO? I wish I could sit here and tell you that you’ll escape the festival turd free. That just isn’t going to be the case. It will be in random places so you’ll always need to be on the lookout. *PRO-TIP* I know you’ve probably heard this before but it bears repeating – NEVER EVER LOOK DOWN A PORTA POTTY. IN FACT, DON’T EVEN USE YOUR FLASHLIGHT. Our campsite usually revolves around lots of ez-up canopies that have walls on them. These walls stop about half a foot to the ground so you can see underneath them outside. I was sleeping on a cot and my friend was on another cot in an adjoining ez-up. This was our exchange one morning:

Him: something smells like shiznit. (not sure of tumblrs rules so I’ll be safe)

Me: it’s Saturday at bonnaroo, this whole place smells like shiznit.

Him: No. No I see it.

And there it was right under a wall in front of someone’s tent. Luckily someone in our group took it upon himself to get rid of it but you will have to face your fears at some point.

Calm down. I’m not trying to scare you but It’s important to realize just what you are getting yourself into. Now that I’ve outlined the risks, let’s focus on what you do get to do in attendance from Wednesday until Monday:

· People watch. Holy moly the people watching. You wouldn’t believe the amount of people who take hula-hooping seriously but super-suck at it.

· Live your dream to participate in a drum circle that goes on for days. These people don’t contribute to society and like the hoola-hoopers, they take banging their hands on a single drum waaaaaay too seriously. Absolutely nothing funnier.

· Comedy shows. It’s air conditioned! I’ve gotten the chance to see a show every year and it’s a great place to have few laughs and drink a wine cooler.

· Listen to great music. Lost in the hoopla is you get to see the best music in the world. Every genre from tons of artists. I can go from bluegrass to rock to Ice Cube in the span of a few hours.

· Take a week off from everything. I love my world wide web ya’ll but it feels good to leave it all behind for days.

· Wander around. Take some time and head to the giant craft beer tent, play some beach volleyball, check out a small tent of a band you don’t know or throw a Frisbee with strangers.

It’s one of the best weeks of the year for me. If you have any questions or suggestions, hit me up on twitter @bryan_CTP. Have fun out there and remember to bring Gold Bond. It makes all the difference.

That green circle is me for Paul McCartney last year. nbd

The gist: It’s not HBO Go, but there is going to be a lot more HBO content available through Amazon Prime. Current stuff eventually, too.
