Personal Branding: An Introduction

Lately, our group coordinator Greg Lockett, has been speaking on the importance of creating a positive personal brand on social media.

So, you might be asking, “ Just what is personal branding?”

Personal branding is how you want your image to be viewed or how you want to market yourself. Personal branding describes the way in which people differentiate themselves and stand out from a crowd by identifying their unique value and style.¹ In other words, as actors/actresses in the entertainment industry we must be intentional about creating a personal brand.

What do I mean?

Well pause for a second, and go through your profile pictures on Facebook and take an honest inventory. Ask yourself, is this how I want to present myself to casting directors and other industry professionals?

I now challenge you to remove any pictures of yourself that could keep you from reaching your goal of getting on screen work.

Why?

Remember, as actors and actresses, how we present ourselves on social media is like a business card. When you submit to a project, a casting director will oftentimes do a Google search to view your social media sites. Based on what they see, they will make a final determination about whether or not to book you.

For instance, if you have a profile on Facebook, the first thing that they will do is go through your pictures. Though I am constantly tweaking my Facebook page, I am intentional about how I am portrayed on Facebook. If a casting director were to go through my pictures on Facebook, not only will they find numerous head shots, but also pictures of my children and my husband.

Why?

I want to be seen as a mother, wife, neighbor or a friend on social media so that it won’t be a stretch when I submit for these types of roles.

Action Step: Clearly define your goals in the entertainment industry. What type of roles do you want to be considered for? How can you clean up your personal brand on social media to match your goals?

The Hardest Lesson Yet

One valuable lesson I have learned in my entertainment endeavors is to never give out valuable information for free, especially to someone whose character does not line up with their goals. I do realize that I have gained a world-class education from Full Sail University. I even stated in a previous blog post that I would not be stingy with some of the knowledge that I’ve gained. Well, I believe it’s time to take that comment back. I was giving out valuable information to someone who wanted to take advantage, and wanted everyone else to do the dirty work. The thing is, when you want to get into ANY industry (be it education, nursing, etc.) you have to be willing to learn, and start from the bottom, and then go to the top. It’s not possible to try to be the “big wig” when your first starting and have no knowledge. When someone has the knowledge that you don’t have (especially when you are trying to break into any industry) show some humility, and be willing to learn. I know I am just now starting off in the entertainment industry, but in order to gain some experience in the field I have to find the BEST way possible. Daily, I go onto a website called The Southern Casting Call, to try and find some on camera work. No, I’m not trying to be the famous actor on the screen, but rather a background extra. I want to gain some on set experience in order to gain more knowledge of what a Producer or a Script Supervisor does. To me, that is one of the BEST ways to get your foot in the door and get your name recognized in the industry. Sometimes people in the entertainment industry are not very open to hiring certain people, unless you not only have some credentials, but also have a good reputation. This is not only the best way to get in, but you never know who those people may know. Don’t try to pretend that you are so knowledgeable about something, and then make a complete fool of yourself. Be willing to learn. Trust me on this. This is the BEST free advice I can give!

Auditioning Etiquette

I know I have not blogged since I graduated from Full SailUniversity in May, however I wanted to blog and give some advice on casting. On August 31^st, 2013, I had the opportunity to assist Lifeline Casting Company with auditions for a theatrical production. Lifeline advertised the casting on Craigslist.com. The process went something like this:

· The people who were interested in auditioning for a role in the stage play, were told to submit two recent photos, and a resume’.

Once an email was received from those who were interested in this casting, they were to reply with a confirmation email, saying that they would be in attendance.

Many confirmed but only a few people showed up. No-shows are a waste of time for the casting company because they still have to pay for the location and other costs. This can also cause a no-show to be blacklisted in the entertainment community.

Here are a few tips to consider if you want to audition with a casting company (television show, film, stage production etc.)

1. Once you confirm the date and time for an audition, make sure you follow-through. Make sure you call the agency ahead of time if you must cancel. If not, casting agents will remember you, and your name will end up on their “do not hire” list.

2. If you do not know where the location for a specific casting may be located, take the time out the day before to find out. Give yourself ample time to make sure you have the correct address and phone number to put in your GPS. Make sure that you leave for your casting early, to give yourself time just in case you may get lost.

3. Make sure that when casting for a television show, film, etc. you know which role you are auditioning for.

4. Arrive at the casting call early. This will ensure that you have time to go over any lines for the character that you may be auditioning for. This will help relieve any nervousness that you may have.

5. If you are not called to be a part of the cast DO NOT call to harass the casting company. This could only prevent you from being cast in any other projects in which you may be interested. Besides, the role that you auditioned for and did not get may not be the right fit for you!

The Film and Television Industry's Got Georgia On Their Mind! Part 2

Film studios are opening up left and right in the state of Georgia. This not only brings many job opportunities, but it just goes to show that Georgia is truly the new Hollywood Of The South.

Here is a list of studios that are right here in our own back yard in metro Atlanta:

• Located only 5 miles from downtown Atlanta, EUE/ Screen Gems Studios, is a newly renovated 33- acre, film and television campus. It houses stage 5, which is one of the countries largest stages, at 37,500 square feet and has five sound stages.

• Tyler Perry Studios, opened in 2008, is 200,000 square feet, and is located in southwest Atlanta. This is where television shows such as House of Payne, and For Better Or Worse are filmed.

• East Mountain Studios, located in Conyers, is a premiere television, film, and commercial and video production studios. East Mountain Studio had its soft grand opening in February 2013, for the citizens of Rockdale, County. Some of the latest projects that East Mountain Studios their work includes: Joyful Noise, starring Queen Latifah, KeKe Palmer, and Dolly Parton. Fast 5, starring Vin Diesel, and American Reunion.

• Triple Horse Studios currently operates out of Hollywood, CA. Triple Horse Studios have the pleasure of working on projects such as; The Casting Crowns latest concert, titled Life Song, a children’s production called Miss Patty Cake, as well as Songs of Praise for America, which will air on the fourth of July. On April 13th, 2013, Triple Horse Studios announced that they will build a Hollywood style film studio in Covington, GA. They will “ultimately (be) investing $100 million with the goal of solidifying Covington’s position as the Hollywood Of The South.”

Before moving to Atlanta in 2000, I considered moving to Los Angeles, CA to pursue acting. However I am very glad that I did not because of all of the great opportunities for film and television here in Georgia. This is only the beginning!

The Film and Television Industry's Got Georgia On Their Mind!

Atlanta, Georgia appears to be the industry’s new hub for filming. I guess that is why Georgia is called the new “Hollywood of The South.” Filming not only takes place in Atlanta, but also on the outskirts of the city. I live in a small town called Conyers. As of late, filming for a movie called Prisoners starring Hugh Jackman, and Jake Gyllenhall took place about 3 miles away from my home. This spring, Draft Day, starring Kevin Costner, Jennifer Garner, and Dennis Leary, will be filmed in the Cleveland, GA area. During the summer months, movies such as A Friggin’ Christmas Miracle starring Lauren Graham and Robin Williams will be filmed in Atlanta.

Not only are there major motion pictures being filmed in and around Atlanta, there are also a plethora of television shows filmed here too! The Vampire Diaries is filmed in and around the city of Covington (two highway exits east of Conyers). Its pretty cool to drive downtown on the Covington Square and often times see the television set, set up for the cast and crew. Shows such as, Lets Stay Together and Reed Between The Lines are both filmed at TBS studios, and air on BET. Movie and television mogul Tyler Perry, also films all of his television programming in Atlanta, right at his very own studios! Television shows such as; Meet The Browns, House of Payne, and For Better or Worse all air on TBS. Perry also has a few new television shows, which will begin airing on the OWN Network, in May. These shows are The Have’s and the Have Nots, and Love Thy Neighbor.

As I have stated above, there are many major motion pictures and television shows filmed right here in our backyard. Most of the productions are always looking to cast certain characters, or even background extras to be included in those productions. If you are and actor and want to gain some on camera experience and you do not know where to begin, you can always start by “liking” certain pages on Facebook. These pages will point you in the right direction as to how you can get involved. Pages such as: Extras Casting Atlanta, or New Life Casting. These casting pages, update daily as to what is filming, and what is needed.

My Crossroads

In my previous post, I blogged about two “sharks” from ABC’s hit television show, Shark Tank. Lori Greiner and Daymond John. I mentioned what they believed to be the key and critical components that investors look for in a business plan.

Based on my own research on these two experts that were highlighted in my post, there was one thing that stood out to me. I also plan to implement this advice in my own business plan. Lori Greiner made mention in an interview with Soledad O’Brien, “Will the product be successful?” I thought about that statement long and hard. I thought about the advice that I received from numerous instructors, and even heard that same advice coming from Tyler Perry in a video. That was to focus on one thing. My business idea was way to broad. For my production company, I wanted to focus on numerous things, such as, plays, film, television, fashion as well as children’s books. In order for my business to be successful I had to narrow it down and really focus in on one thing. It was not until I heard those words that Greiner mentioned that I seriously asked myself “Was my business going to be successful?” I had to revamp everything that I worked on for the past ten and a half months, in order to ensure the success of my business. How did I do that? My target market is for young families and women. Having multiple children can oftentimes mean that going to the movies is way too expensive. Until I realized that there was a market for web series. I decided that in order for my business to be successful, I needed to go where my target audience was, and create web series’, catered to the entire family.

When an investor is reviewing my business plan, the section that I believe will be the most important is the management portion. This will allow the investor to know how our company will operate. What are the different roles people will play within your company, and how will money be made? I believe this section is important, so that the investor will know the “how” behind them receiving a Return On Investment.

Business Plan Advice From "Sharks"

This month I am taking a Business Plan Development course, which is designed to help put together my business plan. Before I decided to complete this program, I thought that I knew everything that I needed to know about starting and running my own business. I was terribly wrong. When it comes to developing a business plan, there are many things to consider, such as when it comes to investors investing money into your company. In this blog post, I will talk about two recognized entrepreneur’s who have written and reviewed many business plans. Lori Greiner and Daymond John, who are both “Sharks” on ABC’s hit television show, Shark Tank.

· Lori Greiner has created over 400 products and 115 U.S. and international patents. She is a well -known personality on QVC, and has hosted her own show “Clever and Unique Creations by Lori Greiner” for over 14 years. On the show Shark Tank, she is known as the “warm blooded shark” and has a reputation of being highly invested in helping the careers of others. (Williams, 2012)

· Daymond John along with four of his friends in Hollis Queens, NY “created one of the most iconic fashion brands” FUBU, which he formed in his home. In an interview with Donny Deutsh on MSBNC’s Big Idea, Daymond John makes mention that his mother could not afford to buy him clothes, so she made his clothes on a sewing machine. By watching his mother, he learned how to sew and began by sewing tie up hats. He then began the FUBU fashion line right in his mother’s home. John has “evolved from being one of the most successful fashion icons, to one of the most sought after branding experts, business and motivational speakers in the country.” John has also created Daymond John’s Shark Branding which was formed to provide companies with the marketing insights that has made his company’s successful over the years.” (Haire, 2012) He has also written several books such as, The Brand Within and Display of Power.

Lori Greiner gives some critical and key components of what investors look for in business plans. In an interview with Soledad O’Brien on CNN Live, Lori Greiner gives some advice as to what she looks for as an investor on Shark Tank. She says that she looks for two things. The first key component that she looks for is the product and if she believes that it will be successful. The second key component is if she thinks that the product will sell to a mass market. Is the product that is being presented before her, going to be something that a majority of the people are going to want? What will the product cost to make, and what will people pay for the product?

Daymond John also gives some critical and key components of what he looks for in a business plan. The first thing that he looks for when a product is presented before him is, “what is the value of the product?” Secondly, “how will the world find out about the product?” Thirdly, is “what is the pricing of the product, and what will people pay for the product?” These key components are important because helps to make sound business decisions, instead of making a decision based off of your excitement about a product.

Girl Power In The Film and Television Industry

During my Entertainment Media Publishing and Distribution course, I was apart of a collaboration team dedicated to finding interesting websites, blogs, or articles, related to the film and television industries. Someone from my group pointed out, that a majority of the members on our team were women. In recent years, more and more women have been directing and producing films, television shows, and web series.

Neema Barnette

Neema Barnette directed 13 episodes of the Cosby Show as well as the 2012 film Women Thou Art Loose and On the 7^th Day.

Issa Rae.

Issa Rae writes, produces, directs and even stars in the popular web series The Misadventures Of An Awkward Black Girl.

Shonda Rhimes

Shonda Rhimes is the creator and executive producer of the hit television show Scandal, Greys Anatomy and Private Practice.

While conducting some research, I have found many organizations that encourage women to not only get into the entertainment industry, but to get into the field of television and film as producers and directors. Many of these organizations list many resources for women who produce and direct television and film. Listed below is list of organizations for women directors and producers in film and television:

1. New York Women In Film and Television is a non-profit that energizes the careers of women in film, television and digital media, by illuminating their achievements, providing training and professional development and advocates for equity. In order to join this organization, you must have at least four years of professional experience. For more information, be sure to check out their website!

2. Alliance of Women Directors supports, advocates women directors in the entertainment industry. This professional organization lists a plethora of downloadable resources, as well as several upcoming events. To join, you must have directed a feature film, TV episode, TV movie, documentary or short film.

3. Located in Atlanta, GA, Women In Film And Television Atlanta is a non-profit organization, member-based professional organization that is dedicated to improving the portrayal and status of women in film and television.

4. Black Women Film Network was founded to increase the number of women of all cultures in the film industry. Membership in this organization will include notifications of screenings, seminars and events, invitations to receptions and other activities, where there will be an opportunity to network with others in the industry!

Film and television historically has been a male dominated industry. It is refreshing to see women making their mark not just as actors but also in key contributing roles behind the scenes.

Getting Your Work Noticed: Part I Literary Agents

This month, the course that I am taking is Entertainment Media Publishing and Distribution. So far, I have learned a plethora of information such as the importance of a literary agent. Around 2008, my husband and I created a treatment for a television show. Once our treatment was completed, we did not know what to do with it. After years of sitting on our creation, and meeting with several likeminded people, we were told that we should try and pitch it to a television network. Even though we live in Atlanta, GA we did not know where to even begin looking, because the city is full of major television studios. Without knowing the proper protocol, my husband decided that he was going to give Tyler Perry Studios a call. Well, he did not get very far because the lady that answered the phone told him that what he needed was a literary agent!

The importance of literary agent

It was great that we had a completed treatment for a television show, but the only thing that we were lacking was a literary agent. Literary agents are important because they can do things that those who are not, cannot do. For instance, what if we would have sent our treatment over to Tyler Perry Studios? It would have been thrown in the trash, because it would be considered unsolicited. Having a literary agent will guarantee that what you have written will get into the hands of the correct people.

Getting a literary agent

So you may be asking the question “How do I get a literary agent?”

· The first step is to make sure that what you have written is completed, and free of any grammatical errors.

· Secondly, you can see if anyone you know can refer you to a literary agent. If that does not work, you can go to your local library or do a search online to find literary guides.

· Make sure that literary agent represents works that is within your specific genre. If you are a screenwriter, you want to make sure that the specific literary agent represents those who write for television and films.

One website that I would recommend is the Writers Guild of America. You can either go to the Writers Guild of America East, or West. Once you find a literary agent that fits your specific genre, then you will want to write a query letter to request their services to represent you as a screenwriter. After you send a literary agent your query letter, it will hopefully spark an interest. They may even consider you to be one of the clients that they represent.

Getting Your Work Noticed: Part II Writing a Television Show Treatment

Gaining knowledge in the entertainment industry can be very challenging. Sometimes, people will even go as far as to keep their knowledge to themselves. Ever since I began my journey to obtain my masters of science degree in entertainment business, I have vowed not to be stingy with the knowledge that I have gained. A few years ago, my husband and I had a concept for a television show. Since we lived in Atlanta, there are a plethora of major television studios. We decided that we wanted to pitch our concept. All we knew to do was to write a treatment for our television show. Just like many of you who may be reading this blog post, might not have a clue as to what a treatment is or what it entails. When submitting a television treatment, there is no correct way to write one, because different companies may have different ways that you should submit one. In this blog post, I will give some tips on how to write a treatment for television.

Steps to writing a successful treatment for television

· You first want to include who the author of your television show is, or you can include “available by request.”

· Secondly, you want to include the title of your show.

· Thirdly, include a logline, for your television treatment. A logline is a summary of what your show will be about, and should be able to “hook” your readers in. Without a logline, your readers will not have an idea what your television show is about.

· Next, you will want to include your Writers Guild of America (East or West) registration number. Including your registration number in your treatment allows you to appear to be more of a legitimate writer.

· Finally, when you write a treatment for television you will want to include the synopsis of your show. The synopsis is a brief summary of what each episode of your show will entail. To be considered a full season, it is customary to include between 11-13 episodes.

Legal Matters in Entertainment Business

This week, I had the opportunity to listen to two different podcasts from entertainment attorney Gordon P. Firemark, from his Entertainment Law Update. For this blog post, I will be discussing the liability issues that I not only found to be interesting, but also that will be of use as I develop my company’s business plan.

The first podcast that I reviewed was Entertainment Law Update: Podcast 13. The first case that I found to be interesting in his podcast was Sofa Entertainment v. Dodger Productions. Sofa Entertainment, who produced the play, The Jersey Boys used at least 6-7 seconds of Ed Sullivan’s introduction of the group, The Four Seasons. Dodger Productions, who owns all the rights to The Ed Sullivan Show alleged a claim of copyright infringement and filed a summary judgment motion, on the basis of the fair use defense. The judge found in favor of Sofa Entertainment stating that “their use of the introduction of the Four Seasons was a commercial use.” The judge also stated that: “the clip used was only a brief historical reference, and that Sofa Entertainment only used a small portion from the Ed Sullivan Show.” The knowledge that was shared from Gordon P. Firemark was, had Sofa Entertainment used the Four Seasons performance from The Ed Sullivan Show, then the judge probably would have found in favor of Dodger Productions, because they owned all the rights to the show. My thoughts are to always make sure you first have the owners consent before proceeding, no matter how much of a clip you use. You do not want to take something that is substantially similar. This could cause someone to file a lawsuit, which can become very costly.

The second case that I reviewed was Davis v. American Broadcasting Companies, Inc. Author David Davis, alleged copyright infringement for a book he wrote called Ely Stone. The American Broadcasting Companies, Inc., produced a show with the same name but with a different spelling, Eli Stone. The judge at first wanted to see if there were any substantial similarities between the book and the television show. In the end, the judge said there were not enough similarities and that what the American Broadcasting Companies did, was not considered to be an infringement on Davis’ copyright. The takeaway for here was that American Broadcasting Companies should have checked first for all of the similarities between the book and the television show before proceeding. My advice would be not to bother with filming a television show that is similar to that of the book with a similar name. I would rather create something fresh and new instead of taking something that someone else has created. This would not only prevent a lawsuit but it would also prevent a lot of legal confusion.

The second podcast that I reviewed was, Entertainment Law Update Podcast: Episode 33, Cease and desist, but nicely. The first case that I found to be very interesting from this podcast was the case of Mine O’ Mine Inc., v. Calmese. Shaquille O’neal and his Mine O’ Mine Inc. alleged trademark infringement, cybersquatting, and right of publicity against Michael Calmese and Dan Mortensen and their company True Fan Logo. Shaquille O’neal licensed his “Shaq” trademarks. After he began playing for the Phoenix Suns, True Fan Logo purchased the domain name SHAQTUS and even created a character that was later put onto t-shirts. In the end, the court first found in favor of Shaquille O’neal, and believed that his trademark was a very strong mark. For the alleged trademark infringement claim, the judge also thought this Shaquille O’neal’s trademark could be considered to be a family of marks and that the defendants would more than likely cause some kind of confusion. On the other hand, for the right of publicity claims, the judge found in favor of True Fan Logo stating that: “Nevada state law provides every person with a statutory right of publicity in his name, voice, signature photograph and likeness.” The Ninth Circuit also recognized a transformative use of defense when cartoons depicting real people are distorted for purposes of lampoon, parody, and or caricature. The knowledge that was given by Gordon P. Firemark in regards to this case was that the court ruled too narrowly because the image or character that was used had Shaq’s likeness, had the number 32 on it, and was also bouncing a ball. The advice that I would would be to make sure that you first get the consent of the trademark owner, so that you will not be sued for a claim of trademark infringement.

The second case that I found to be interesting from the second podcast was Zen Bear, Inc. v. Dreamworks. Terence Dunn pitched a film concept to Dreamworks, who was not interested in the idea. A few years after Dunn pitched his idea to Dreamworks, a film that was remotely similar to his concept, had been stolen. Dunn felt as though he should have been compensated for his concept and been involved in the filming of the movie. The judge found in favor of Dreamworks, stating that they did not enter into an implied contract with Terence Dunn, and that Dreamworks did not use Mr. Dunn’s ideas. The knowledge that I took from this podcast was that Terence Dunn probably should appeal, and that there were obviously errors in the findings. The advice that I would give is to make sure that when pitching a concept or an idea is to always have a contract in place. When there is something in writing, you always have something to refer back to, especially if an issue should arise.

Deal or No Deal: The ugly side of entertainment

Growing up, I have always wanted to be a director and producer of my own production company. Not only because I love seeing my creations come to life, but just like many other people, I thought that being in the entertainment industry was only supposed to be fun and entertaining. After taking many courses in regards to the business side of entertainment, I have come to the realization that being in the entertainment industry it is very important to know what is going on. Especially when it comes to the legal aspects. This week, I will be discussing three legal controversies that I have found to be very interesting.

DLT Entertainment vs. David Adjmi

In July of 2012 DLT Entertainment filed a lawsuit against David Adjmi, who wrote and directed the play 3C. This production has several similarities to the popular 70’s hit show Three’s Company. DLT Entertainment is the company that owns the rights to Three’s Company sent David Adjmi a cease and desist letter, claiming that the play is an act of copyright infringement. The letter also stated: “the play is a satirical work, and like all parody, should be recognized as protected speech under the First Amendment.”

I feel as though David Adjmi deserved receiving a cease and desist letter from DLT Entertainment. For one, the name of the play 3C can cause a lot of confusion. Before reading in detail of this case I was very confused. I thought that the play 3C was Three’s Company on stage. Having the name 3C as the title of the play could have very well meant apartment 3 C. But here again, there is more confusion and a lot of similarity to the sitcom, because the show took place in an apartment. As a future playwright and filmmaker I would not want to have to deal with something of this nature. Only because if I am the original creator of a play, television show or film, I would not want someone to come along and try to make something that I created out to be their own.

Carol Burnett is sued by Bob Barner Associates

Filed on November 21^st, 2012, Bob Barner Associates sued actress Carol Burnett. Bob Barner Associates helped Carol Burnett create many of her productions including her hit show The Carol Burnett Show. Bob Barner Associates caught wind that Carol Burnett’s productions were being released on DVD without compensation to their firm. Bob Barner Associates claim to be co-owners of the productions.

Bob Barner Associates in my opinion should be compensated for being co-owners of The Carol Burnett Show. Bob Barner Associates claimed that they are listed as co-owners of the copyrights to The Carol Burnett Show in the credits. If this is true, then this could be proof that Bob Barner Associates is entitled to a share of the revenue.

Forest Park Pictures vs. Universal Television Network, Inc.

Forest Park Pictures pitched a television show idea to USA Networks. Four years later, USA Networks used the ideas that were pitched to them without the consent of Forest Park Pictures. The show that was aired was very similar to the concept that Forest Park Pictures presented to USA Networks with the exception of the title of the show. The title that Forest Park Pictures used was House Call. The title that USA networks used was Royal Pains. Even though the title’s were different, the concept that Forest Park Pictures pitched to USA networks were the exact same. Forest Park Pictures sued for a breach of contract.

In my opinion, Forest Park Pictures should have sued USA Networks for copyright infringement instead of a breach of contract. The contract between Forest Park Pictures and USA Networks was not a written contract. It was however an implied contract.

In closing, we writers and creators must be extra careful when pitching an idea, or even sharing an idea. Even large multi-million dollar stations such as the USA Network will be tempted to act without integrity.

I'm an artist. Do I really need a manager?

In my last post, I had the opportunity to interview my friend Yolonda Jay to ask her a few questions about being an artist manager. As an up and coming play and screen writer I wanted to get an artist's perspective, in regards to having an artist manager. This week, I had the opportunity to ask those questions of my friend Comedian Marcus Harvey .Marcus Harvey is also a host and an actor. He is currently on tour with the rapper Nas, as his luxury barber. Marcus has also signed a contract to tour several college campuses for 19 days, and will be showcased in 18 shows, with the APCA and NACA.

MAJ: As an artist, how do you feel that having a manager has helped you as opposed to not having one?

MH: Well, right now my wife Khrystina is my manager. It has helped me to allow her to be the bad guy for me. She is the one that takes care of anything business related, such as reaching out to past clients and responding to e-mails, bookings and making sure my web presence is up to par. She does this so I can focus more on my craft.

MAJ : Do you feel as though you have had more success as an artist with a manager?

MH: I do feel that having a manager has given me more success. People that you work with tend to look at you more as a professional. Having a manager, causes those with whom you are working with to take you more seriously as an artist, instead of looking at you like they are you’re their friend. Sometimes people don’t take comedians seriously, as they do “regular artists”. The gigs that I have booked are solely based off of relationships, instead of notoriety. Within the next few years, I will more than likely book gigs based off of relationships that I have formed. I feel as though an artist manager should have a bigger vision than the artist does. Unfortunately, I have worked with a manager where it didn’t work out that way. They thought that the work that I did, was going to be their hustle. Some managers are over-achievers, or don’t do their job as a manager well. I think that an artist manager should be more of a middleman for the artist.

MAJ: Do you think your career would be different, if you did not have an artist manager?

MH: Yes, I do feel as though my career would be different. Having my wife Khrystina as a manger is a good thing for me. Not only is she sweet, she is also stern and very thorough all at the same time. As my manager, she see’s what needs to be done before I see it. She also makes sure that I am focused on writing jokes and not on doing the dirty work. She also lets those who want to book me know that before anything goes forward, that a deposit must first be paid. So if I didn’t have her as my manager, my career would not be a little different because I would be the one doing all the dirty work.

MAJ: As an artist with some experience, why would you recommend other up and coming artists, to possibly consider having an artist manager?

MH: I wouldn’t necessarily recommend an up and coming artist to have a manager until someone approaches you. The artist should start off doing things on their own, so they know what to expect. An artist really doesn’t need a manager until they feel as though they cannot do certain things for themselves. For instance, when an artist becomes overwhelmed with auditions, and bookings, that is when I feel like an artist needs someone to manage them. When an artist does decide to use a manager, the artist must make sure that the manager they chose is someone who will build them up. Also the artist should make sure the manager they chose is very thorough, persistent, and will not take no for an answer.

MAJ : You made a mention as to having a web presence. Why is it important as an artist to have a web presence?

MH: When you have multiple resources about your self on the web, people can make their decisions about you quickly. People don’t realize the quality of their web presence. It really helps you out, and gives you a “dressing for your career.”

An Interview with an Artist Manager

Product and Artist Management, is the course that I am taking this month and I have found it to be particularly interesting. I live outside of Atlanta, GA, which is now considered to be The Hollywood of the South. Many things entertainment wise has been done here, from the filming of major motion pictures, to the filming of major awards shows. To fully grasp the concept of what exactly an Artist Manger does, this week I had the opportunity to interview my friend and Artist Manager, Yolonda Jay, of J. Squared Entertainment, LLC. Yolonda Jay manages several different types of artists. Such as, instrumentalists, writers, speakers, actors, dancers, poets, models and television personalities.

Mandisa Johnson: Can you elaborate on what exactly your job as an Artist Manger consists of?

Yolonda Jay: As the CEO as well as the Senior Promoter and Manager, I handle the logistics for each of my artists from conception of their ministries, career goals to its execution.

Mandisa Johnson: How long have you been an artist manager?

Yolonda Jay: I accidentally got into this business. I had no plans to working in the industry. An Indie Artist that I went to church with, asked me to help her build her brand and a shifting occurred within her management. I then found myself being called her “manager.” It was maybe around 2009. Up until 2011, I was asked numerous times by several different artists and industry professionals for consultations. Through that I launched my own business. J Squared Entertainment Group in 2011.

Mandisa Johnson: Did you have any formal training before becoming an Artist Manager? If so, what kind?

Yolonda Jay: No. I had no formal training. I just kind of found some things out on my own as I went along.

Mandisa Johnson: Can you elaborate on a few of the artists that you manage?

Yolonda Jay: My artist roster is a collective of performance artists. From vocalist and musicians to writers and actors. One of the artists I have worked through J Squared is Cassi Simmons. Cassi is an entertainment triple threat. She is an awesome actress, radio personality, television personality and prolific speaker. She has appeared on the small stage, and is currently preparing to move to the big screen! She is a certainly a force to be reckoned with, yet she is very humble

Mandisa Johnson: What is your job like on a daily basis?

Yolonda Jay: Every single day is different. Having a roster of 15 artists keeps me very busy. I have found that the artist types certainly are challenged with compliance. From the time I step into the office, I am immediately connecting with other industry professionals through social networking, responding to client inquiries (requests for our artists), updating marketing information, planning/executing an event or simply making calls to get work. Outside of the office, I am likely networking at an event such as the Stellar or Dove Awards or even local industry gatherings.  

Mandisa Johnson: When new artists want you to manage them, what are some of the things that you look  for?

Yolonda Jay: It is very important for me to have a one on one conversation. During that conversation, I am trying to sense if our personalities will “mesh”. Since we will be working intimately, cohesion is a must. Secondly, during that conversation I assess where they are in their career and also see if they are “ready for show time”. If I feel they need any assistance, I will call in my team. My team consists of, a photographer, producer, writer, stylist etc. It’s hard to tell someone who is in a fragile place in their career, “no” when I feel like their ministry or their gift is not a match for my services. I have learned different ways to say it. An artist needs to have an “it factor”. It sounds cliché but it’s so true. I’m looking for something I don’t see or hear when I listen to the radio every day.

Mandisa Johnson: Can you explain, how you develop your artists?

Yolonda Jay: I normally don’t begin working with an artist, until their business is in

order. I use a nine -step process when developing the artist that I manage. Step 1.

Is where the artist (s) must have an official business entity, with papers before we

move any further. The artist’s need to be aware of that step, keeping in mind that this

industry is a big business. Then we move on to their music. My clientele so far in my

career have only been indie artists. I also want to know if their music is professionally

mixed and mastered. Step 2. This is where we get the artists’ pictures done

professionally. Steps 3 & 4. This is where we build the artists’ website, create business

cards and promotional flyers Steps 5 & 6. This is when we make sure that the artists’

have a strong media presence. We also help the artists’ build a fan base in order to

keep their fan’s informed. Step 7. This is where I ask the artist if they are ready for their

single to be released. If their answer is “yes”, then the artist’s single must be made

available online. Step 8 This is when the artists’ CD is designed and packaged for direct

sales. Step 9. This is when it is time for the artists’ exposure.

Mandisa Johnson: What have you done well as an artist manager?

I do well giving the artists their start. I'm learning my foundational skills are the best and bring me the greatest sense of achievement. I've learned that I really don't like "managing" as much as establishing.

Mandisa Johnson: What is one of the biggest lessons you have learned as an artist manager?

Yolonda Jay: One of the biggest and hardest lessons that I have learned is, to always have your contracts in place before anything moves forward. I have lost investments both monetarily and physically because contracts were not in place. Secondly, before proceeding with an artist (s) to always have your paperwork in order. Even if the artist is a small deal. Thirdly, you have to be ready for the future. I preach it to my artists all the time but I was not practicing what I preached.

Standing Your Ground: Negotiating and Play Production with April Crawley

This week, I had the opportunity to interview my friend and fellow entrepreneur April Crawley to ask her a few questions as it relates to negotiations. April and her husband Sheridan run C & D Entertainment in Warner Robbins, GA. They are responsible for putting on the hit stage production A Young Mother's Love. In October 2012, April and Sheridan will be holding their annual auditions for the Middle Georgia Idol Contest.

Mandisa Johnson: What types of negotiations are involved when producing a play?

April Crawley: The types of negotiations that I deal with on a regular basis are where my play venue will be. Not just the venue for the production, but will the venue also include space to hold my rehearsals. Sometimes, the price of the venue is negotiable. Let’s say I offer to pay one of my actor’s $200. They may want to get paid more, because they have been acting for a while, and feel as though they are worth more than $200.

Mandisa Johnson: What is your strategy when negotiating?

April Crawley: Honestly, to maximize on my profit. But in the long run I must be able to keep my actor’s happy.

Mandisa Johnson: What would you say is your style of negotiation? Would you say that you are a soft or a hard bargainer?

April Crawley: I would have to say that I am a soft bargainer when it comes to negotiating. I am a soft bargainer because I have been a performer for a while, and have a little bit more empathy when it comes to actors wanting to get paid more. Sometimes, I am able to take more into consideration from being an artist my self. On the other hand, when I am faced with a tough negotiation, my husband is the hard bargainer. He isn’t as empathetic, especially when it comes to giving my actors more pay.

Mandisa Johnson: What is the toughest negotiation that you have done?

April Crawley: When we advertised for one of my productions with a local radio station. The commercial started out at a particular price. Our commercial kept getting pushed back, due to the 2008 elections. We paid for ten commercials and only two were aired. It was very tough, because we had to re-negotiate and money had already been paid. It was basically the radio station’s fault due to lack of managing their time.

Mandisa Johnson: In that situation, how were you able to separate the people from the problem?

April Crawley: I didn’t. The problem was, the person who we did the negotiation with for our radio commercial was a personal friend. They weren’t as competent as they claimed they were. So in the long run, we weren’t as confident in her and realized that you shouldn’t do business with people you know because they could very well take advantage of you.

Mandisa Johnson: Do you go into each negotiation with a back up plan?

April Crawley: No I don’t. And honestly. I should. I don’t go into the negotiation with a back up plan, because I am quick on my feet and kind of go with the flow. I am also able to read a situation.

Mandisa Johnson: What was the toughest lesson to learn when negotiating?

April Crawley: The toughest lesson I learned was not showing my weaknesses. You have to be stern when making negotiations. You also have to have a bottom line and stand your ground. If you don’t you can get burned easily.

Mandisa Johnson: Can you give me an example of how you worked toward a mutual benefit when you were negotiating a deal?

April Crawley: Well, in 2010 we did a trade off when we did our annual Middle Georgia Idol contest. We wanted to hold our contest at the Warner Robbins Conference Center. This venue was a little pricey, and for holding our event at this location, they also wanted publicity. We had been looking for sponsors. So for a smaller fee, we advertised for the convention center on our website, which helped them to get their name out. In return, we were able to get a cheaper rate and the audition space for free.

This week I had the opportunity to sit down and interview my friend and business owner Egenia Elam. I asked her a few questions related to owning and maintaining her own business in the fashion industry. Egenia and her sister Evonia own a fashion and accessory boutique called Accessories Galore and More. They both felt that there was a need in the community to open up a fashion and accessory boutique, in order to make purchasing fashionable clothes and accessories affordable. Together, Egenia and Evonia have a knack for fashion. If you ever need help putting an outfit together they will also be your “go to” fashion consultants. Everything that is ordered for purchase is chosen with care and care and consideration for their target market. They also know each of their loyal customers by name, and if it is a customer’s first time, they will not only extend you a warm welcome but will also gladly give you a tour.

Mandisa Johnson: What was the biggest lesson you have learned as a business owner?

Egenia Elam: To always make sure that you do your research, and to keep up with the latest fashion trends, because they are always changing. Continuously re-invent yourself, even while running your business.

Mandisa Johnson: What are your long-term goals for your business?

Egenia Elam: To ultimately open up multiple fashion and accessory stores, and more profitable stores.

Mandisa Johnson: What gave you the idea to open up your business?

Egenia Elam: To supply a fashion need in our community. People felt like they couldn’t afford nice accessories for their outfits. So the need was to sell fashion and accessories and an affordable price for our customers.

Mandisa Johnson: Was it hard starting a business as a young black woman? What were some obstacles that you had to overcome?

Egenia Elam: It has not only been difficult to start a business as an African American woman, in general, starting any business is hard. One of the biggest obstacles that I have had to overcome is crossing-over to present a store to reach several demographics.

Mandisa Johnson: What advice do you have for young women starting their own business?

Egenia Elam: Continuously research. Always over estimate your cost. Believe in your vision even when no one else can see it.

Trending fashion colors for Fall 2012

Tangerine Tango, is a third color that is trending this Fall season. This is a reddish orange color. You may consider these first few colors that I have mentioned to be colors that you would wear in the spring or summer. However, these colors that are now trending are sure to brighten and uplift your fall wardrobe! The fourth color is Ultramarine Green. It is a blend of jade and mint tones. Honey Gold, which is a yellowish color, and a color that works great for the fall! A beautiful color that you may want to consider this season is Olympian Blue. This is a blend of cobalt and sapphire tones. When you think of the fall season, you may be thinking of warm colors such as French Roast, which is a rich coffee colored brown, or Rhubarb which is reddish orange in color. If you want a not so warm color, you may want to try colors like Rose Smoke, Titanium , Sea Fog, or Whitecap Gray All of these colors, are considered to be neutral.

Professional Organization: The Dramatists Guild

Professional organizations do not always get the credit they deserve. Employers do not care for them because they resemble unions. Employees are wary of joining them because they see little or no advantage of being a member. However, being apart of these organizations could be beneficial in professional matters that turn into legal matters. For example, the teacher organization NEA, gives their members one million dollars of legal coverage.

As an up and coming playwright, I have researched several professional associations that I have considered joining. The professional association that I am most interested in being apart of is The Dramatists Guild. The Dramatists Guild was founded over 80 years ago, and is the only association that advances the interests of playwrights, composers, lyricists, and librettists, writing for the living stage. What is appealing about the Dramatists Guild, is that they protect both artistic and economic integrity. I feel confident when making transactions with intellectual property (plays, movie scripts, etc.) that the Dramatists Guild will help to guide and protect me through that process.

The Dramatists Guild offers a variety of events and education such as: Friday Night Footlights and the Director/Dramatists Exchange.

Acting as healing

Patsy Rodenburg, is a voice and acting coach, and has worked with some of the world's leading actors. She was named as TED.com 's best of the web, in March, 2010, for her speech "Why I do theater".

In her speech, "Why I do theater" Patsy Rodenburg, shares a lot of knowledge with her audience. She talks about how the actor should "be in the present, be engaged, be in the moment, and be connected ." She also states that: "playwrights and actors are needed more than any other time, because they are the healers of society, and have witnessed the truth." Rodenburg goes on to share with her audience a story about an encounter with a man she met in Australia. He tells Patsy Rodenburg, that he and his wife didn’t like theater. The reason they did not like theater was because they saw a play called The Women of Troy. There was an actress who made a sound that was very embarrassing. The sound was made because she loss her son. It was the same sound that he made, when it was discovered that his daughter, a year later, had been raped and murdered. It was that actress that he didn’t like, because she played with truth and feeling.

Patsy Rodenburg’s speech helped me to develop a deeper understanding of her topic: “Why I do theater”. As a director, I will be sure that potential actors are able to relate to that character and play it truthfully. When an actor is able to relate to the people that are viewing a production, they are able to connect with them. In turn, sometimes the audience will not like a certain character that the actor plays. This only means the actor has played it truthfully. Playwrights have a calling, and that is to help hurting people through their productions. It is also to reveal the truth. Rodenburg says in her speech that playwrights are the healers of society. This is true. Sometimes, if you try to share the truth with someone verbally they will not listen. But if it is performed on stage, or in a film, and it is acted out truthfully then people are not as reluctant to listen and take it in the truth that applies to them. Rodenburg has given me clarity on why I am called to be a playwright and screenwriter. People are hungry for the truth and search for it in plays, television, and film.

Are there role models in the entertainment industry for our young girls?

We see them just about everywhere. From the check out lane, on the cover of magazines (usually dressed scantily clad) to inviting them into our homes weekly by viewing their reality shows. We see them on the shows tossing foul language and insults to other cast members. Fighting. Pulling off wigs and hair pieces. Frivolously spending money. Just what am I speaking of? The images of negative role models. Just take a look at the latest issue of Vibe Magazine. Can we truly say, that these are the role models that we want our young girls to look up to?

Just what is a role model? A role model is defined as someone you admire, and seek to imitate. I wouldn't want MY daughters looking up to any of the women that are on the cover of the latest issue of Vibe Magazine. Needless to say, these women do not fit the image of a positive role model. My question is, are there role models in the entertainment industry that our young girls can look up to? The answer is yes. But they are few and far between.

Here are some women that I would prefer my daughters to look up to and imitate.

Jamie Grace
Jamie Grace is a contemporary Christian artist. She not only inspires others through song, but she also inspires others with her powerful testimony. She also battles Tourette's Syndrome. She encourages other youth that may be battling with Tourette's Syndrome or any other adversity in life.

Keshia Knight-Pulliam
Keshia Knight-Pulliam, is an actress who starred as Rudy Huxtable on the The Cosby Show. She currently stars on Tyler Perry's House of Payne. She also has an organization called Kamp Kizzy,

"Keshia felt compelled to establish a non-profit foundation such as Kamp Kizzy, to empower the spirits of young girls".

Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift is a country singer, and also known as "America's Sweetheart". Even though she was interrupted during her MTV's Video Music Awards moment by Kanye West, she handled the situation with style and grace. Handling situations with style and grace, is something that is rarely ever seen by women within the entertainment industry.

Anjelah Johnson
Anjelah Johnson is a comedian that performs profanity free stand-up. She was also featured on Mad TV, and was best known for her character Bon Qui Qui.

I am glad there are still some positive role models in the entertainment industry for young girls. These women have managed to gain success in their various fields and still keep a positive image. They are to be commended!

Can people with special needs break into the entertainment industry?

About three years ago, I found out that there was a possibility that my unborn daughter could be born with Downs Syndrome. I decided not to allow the doctors to run any tests, because there were too many risks. On May 7th, 2010, I went into labor. I didn't have a lot of amniotic fluid when my water broke. When my daughter Milan was born, I knew just by looking at her that she had Downs Syndrome. At first, I felt hopeless. One of the things that discouraged me about having a child with Downs Syndrome, is that I thought my dreams of going into the field of Entertainment wouldn't come true. In my mind, I thought that I would be taking care of a sick child 24 hours a day. Not only was I wrong, but seeing my daughter make progress, is a part of what inspired me to pursue the field of entertainment by enrolling into Full Sail University. In fact, I have discovered several opportunities for children like Milan to get involved in entertainment.

Getting a Child with Special Needs into the Entertainment Industry

Many people have stated that I should get my children into acting. I had no idea where to begin with Milan, since she was a child with special needs. I slowly began researching and have stumbled upon many websites that cater to children with special needs. This is information taken directly from these organizations’ blogs and websites.

Down Syndrome in Arts and Media, is located in North Hollywood, CA. It is an online service that locates talent with developmental disabilities. Gail Williamson, is the Director.

Y Pierre Works

Located in Atlanta, GA, Yvonne Pierre is a writer, director, producer and advocate. Yvonne is a devoted mom of two boys. Yvonne Pierre writes productions that inspire, inform and uplift. Yvonne’s youngest son was diagnosed with Down syndrome after birth and she has redirected her attention and primary efforts towards the special needs community. Yvonne Pierre has written a production called THEN YOU STAND. This story is about a newlywed couple, who is excited about their first child. Then, they find out that their unborn child is diagnosed with a disability that leads them to question their faith. My Review Of The Film The Courageous Movie

When you think of the word courageous what comes to mind? Maybe words like strength and honor come to mind. What about husband and father?

Courageous, was released in theaters on September 30th, 2011. It was written, directed and produced by brothers Steven and Alex Kendrick. This film has excellent cinematography and is action packed with plenty of humor.

The Courageous Movie is about five fathers who commit to remain faithful to their families when faced with adversity. Even though the message of Courageous is serious, the use of comic relief makes the film easy to watch. Alex Kendrick gave an outstanding performance as Adam, a forty-something police officer who is suddenly hit with the death of his daughter. This movie contains suspense, romance, and drama. These key ingredients along with a powerful message to fathers and families make this movie a must see!

Christian films can sometimes get a bad rap from the general public. Christian movies are stereotyped, often accused of having bad acting, judgmental story lines and overall poor quality. The Kendrick brothers, however, once again provide a quality product for all to enjoy.
