Outsourcing the website

In an effort to continuously improve the website, I've started to outsource certain elements of the website. In fact many of features are already outsourced, features such as: The login system, which is provided by OpenID. The feedback system is running at UserVoice. This blog, and the recently added calendar, is provided by Google.
...And Google is one of those third-party providers I intend to heavily rely on. So far I've found great use for both Google Docs (for walkthroughs etc.) and Google Reader (for feeds), which I'm currently working on integrating into the website.

The main three services (games, video and flash) are remaining under my full control, but I'm fiddling with outsourcing the news system to a blogger.

Please comment on this with your thoughts. Do you like it? Do you dislike it?

The Hentai Shag went back on-line yesterday. This time with a brand new design, which should help things along a bit, as opposed to the old not-design design...

Anyway, The site doesn't work much different than the old one, apart from the (as explained before (read previous post))login system which is now OpenID.
You are perfectly able to browse the site without logging in, however, getting ed2k/torrent links for the games and downloading the flash, requires you to login.
Logging in also eases the commenting process, as you no longer have to fill out the name and email field.
Apart from that, it's just as it used to be, just in a new wrapper.

TODO list:
• When logging in and out, return to the page you came from.
• Fix minor design flaws.
• ALOT of backend optimizing.

...Wow if I had a penny for every time I've predicted the death of this project, I'd have...well...three pennies, but that's beside the point.

The point is; I've found a free host which meets the requirements of the site, now all I�??ve got to do is; finnish it up and publicize it.
The site has undergone a minor diet, cutting out everything unnecessary; leaving only what is essential and important.

This means; there are only 4 major sections: The news section, flash section, video section and game section, which is all that is needed.

The new Diet version doesn't include features such as: Forums, user sections, reviews or links as these are considered unnecessary. Furthermore features such as commenting and rating on videos and flash have been removed to keep the site as light (lite) as possible. Commenting on the news is still available, in fact, it's endorsed.

Seeing as how the login system was linked to the phpBB board, which is now not included, on the previous (full) version of the site, a new login system has been implanted: OpenID. A simple and easy way of logging in to any site supporting it.
What is OpenID? Read all about it at the following address: http://openid.net/what/.

Also a new service has been affiliated with the site. Introducing UserVoice, a feedback system which allows you to post about suggestions, bugs, ideas, you name it you can post it. I'd prefer if you'd use this system to everything site related and the blog for everything else (short comments, quick questions etc.). The link is http://hentaishag.uservoice.com/.

So when will the new version become available?
Well, it's hard to say, might be in a week, and might be in a month, it all depends on how much work I put into it and how much needs to be fixed before it's ready.

90% pure pwnage (updated)

...And by that I mean, 90% pure CSS/div layout.
A lot of sleepless nights, homework undone and banging of head on the wall, has now resulted in this CSS/div layout. It has been a battle getting rid of tables, seeing as how the whole design and layout was built on tables, it had pretty much infiltrated every corner of the site.
But now they are 90% gone. Of course the goal is a 100% table less layout, but that's not gonna happen as of yet, I'll keep improving though.

Noticeable changes:
None!

[UPDATE]
I've fixed various pages, which were affected by this recent update.
Mainly those who use 1024x768 and below (which I strongly dis encourage) have noted that some elements have been out-of-place, this has not been corrected.

User panel updated

I've made some minor modifications to the user panel so it would be included into the site more.
Now, if/whenever you add a game either your wish list or game list, you will do so via the user panel. Likewise, if you want to view/delete from your lists, this is also done in the user panel.
Another small feature, is the ability to view the comments you've made on news entries, if you've ever done so.

The plan is to clean up the user panel, remove the "site tools" and replace it with something a bit more useful. Any ideas you might have (which isn't possible through phpbb) are welcome.

Refurbishing the website

I've started to refurbish the website, or rather parts of it.
This is not a new design or a re-design, it is just a replacement of already existing elements.
First off is the game section. The biggest change here, aside from the visual aspect of it, is that you can now view each entry without having to log in. If you want the links, however, you still need to log in.

Next up will be changing the flash and video sections.

As this is still fresh off the table, there might be some minor errors, if you find one, do not hesitate to report it, either on the forum or as a comment here, or even send me an email, it's up to you.

So enjoy the "new" sections, and keep a lookout for more.

As you may or may not know, a while ago I added the possibility to rate and comment on videos and flash.

Now I'm not saying you have to comment on every single entry, however, rating them is more important to me.
It's a very simple, standard X out of 5 star vote.

Just a couple of small things I've added over the weekend.

I've added a Gravatar script to all comment posts. This means everyone get a unique avatar based on an md5 hash of your email. Of course, you don't have to post your email, in which case you will get a default random avatar. If you have an account at Gravatar, your chosen avatar will now be displayed a long side your comment.

Another thing I've updated, is the font page. Aside from showing recently added media and news, now it'll also be showing: Blog updates, recent forum topics and a (wannabe) fancy link tag system; the more popular they are the bigger they'll display.

The reason for putting all this on the front page, is that I eventually wanna get rid of the right sidebar, which is currently visible from the news page, as the only place on the whole site. The reason it was there in the first place was due to it being the front page, prior to the now existing one.

I'll keep updating as I go along and find new cool things to add/replace/improve etc.

Test projects

I've opened up for two new test projects, which, hopefully, will result in either of them being used (or maybe both?).

The first project is a wiki. Still not quite sure what to do with it. However, one option was to move the entire game database over to the wiki.
This will not only add a lot more options, but also make it more efficient, in the sense that users would be able to directly contribute.

The second project I had in mind, was an imageboard.

More digestible

In an attempt to further enhance the functionality of the site, I've updates the video and flash sections.
Instead of the old, temporary, index where every entry was visible, you are now met with a more digestible first-hand glance.
The new index is build up of three main elements: The search, the 4 most recent- and the 4 most popular entries.
Very simple, yet very effective.
You are, of course, still able to browse through all the entries as before, by simply following the related link.

This time I've managed not to cram everything into one small space though.

I'm not quite sure how the layout should be, and right now, it is simply a tryout sample.

If you check out the flash and video sections, you'll notice the layout is a bit different than it usually is.
That's because I've made a grid view instead of the boring old list view.
Now I've only just finished it yesterday, and there are still some bugs to fix, but overall it's a working page.
I'm still fiddeling with limiting the number of entries per page, which should be done next week or something.

If you do find any bugs, you are welcome to report them, either just comment here, or go to the forum or mail me, whatever you fancy.

User panel

If you haven't noticed it yet, a new user panel have been created.
Currently it only features an overview of you options of the site, including you game/wish list of course (if you use those).

In the future, I hope to add more features. However, since the site is more or less married to PHPBB3, many of those features are already available in the through the forum. Therefore, I'm planning on some new stuff to add.

So keep an eye out, or you might miss something...

Front page sux

Basically i get kinda fed up with the front page. Thought i was a nice idea in the beginning, but the load-time of it, is simply sky-rocketing, and I wanted to cram too much information into one spot. So now it's gone as the default page, you can still find it here, if you feel the need to look at it.

So what's next?
Just finished upgrading all the code, replacing old outdated html (<b></b><i></i><font></font> ... etc.) with CSS. I also incorporated some <div></div> instead of tables, my plan is to replace all tables, but that's gonna take awhile, and exams are coming up, so it won't be right now.

I might make another front page, one that is more dynamic.
I'm a Google-whore, so it'll probably be a bundle of Google gadgets or Yahoo! UI stuff...we'll see

News are slow at the moment and not a lot is happening, but keep an eye on the game DB, 'cause games might just be added without any announcement, Japanese-language games at least.

I'll figure out more later...

Minor down time

I only recently checked back today, after being away for the weekend, and found the site inaccessable.
No need to worry though, it's only a password problem, which I'm retriving right now.
I should have it back up and running before the end of today.

If you feel the site is getting a bit crambed, you're correct, it seems there aren't any space left for all the features I want to add, so they're simply just thrown in the top. I'll see what I can sort out later.

Nearing Completion

After many hours of work re-creating, improving and adding new stuff, the site is finally nearing it's completion.

I've managed to re-design it to a state of somewhat sadisfaction, I'm not a designer, mind you, so this is my best shot. The structure remains the same as I see as the most optimal for the site, it's just the colours and stuff that has changed.
Anyway, I'm still testing and re-coding some bits, and I've done, and still doing, a lot of cleaning up to the backend codes, which, in theory, should make the site run a bit smoother.

But all in all, if everything goes according to plan and if I spend the right amount of time on it, the site should be back up sometime next month. This is only an estimate, of course, so please don't kill me if it get's further delayed.

A Little Update

I've managed to salvage a fair bit of what has been lost.
The backup I've been working on is SO old, many of the updates I had to make were so extensive, it has taken me loads of hours, trying to piece it all together again.
But, I've successeded!...on most accounts, anyway.
First of all, I've switched to PHPBB3, then I've brought back all the features, which vanished previously.
All that needs doing now, is a lot of tweeking, and hopefully a new design, but we'll see about that later...

I'll keep you posted, about the progress.

Everything is gone...Gone into nowhere!
And it's all due to the fuck-ups at fuitadnet! They deleted EVERYTHING!
Now there're probably some wise-asses out there going: "well that's what happens when you don't back everything up".
True, but I don't wanna hear about it.

So here's the deal:
I still have a fairly recent backup from around mid-January, and I have been wanting to switch to phpbb 3, so it might be an opportunity to do that now.
But it won't be anytime soon! In fact it probably won't be on this side of the summer.
So if you wanna be kept updated, keep an eye on this blog...

The Future

You might not know it by the rather slow news updates, but I'm constantly upgrading the site, making it more resourceful, efficient, available and up-to-date.

Throughout the years, the site has developed quite a lot, from being just another half-underground site where a small group of lurkers would roam, to large scale site as it is today...with a larger group of lurkers roaming around.

My current problem with the site, is the lack of news sources. A fair amount of my news scouts have vanished over time, leaving me having to do all the dirty work by myself. Not that I mind, it just get trivial and tiresome at times.

Website-wise, always making new additions and incorporating as much of the web as possible. However, this creates another problem for me, which is a problem I've always had: Wanting to cram everything into one space. Hence the main page.
The bottom is a mess and the top just looks awful. But that's to be sorted out on another occation.

The newest addition to the site, is a Google API (I love these, saves me a lot of time not coding it myself). It's an ajax feed fetcher, which displays the RSS feeds from the RSS section of the site...Well some of them, they weren't all working with the API, so I simply left those out.
I think it's handy, gives you a quick overview of whats happening elsewhere.

A future addition will be a video section.
As much as it will allow me, I'll try to fetch a fair number of Youtube.com videos as well as those available on porntube.com/pornotube.com.
I've already made a template for the section, now all I need to do, is finding a way to neatly display the many videos. Youtube will be fairly easy as Google have made an API for that purpose alone.

As you know, the site is currently located on a subdomain, kindly donated by a friend of mine. If you've been here long enough, you'd know that we used to be on http://www.hentaishag.net, but that one expired because of some hosting issues (they wouldn't release the domain because I dumped them...). Now the domain is taken by some advertisement company for porn or whatever. It's been like that for about 1½ years and I can't get a hold of it, and even if I could I'd be paying overprice.

So I'm currently looking around for some cheap TDL's. Right now .info is only like $2. But I'll figure it out sooner or later.

Anyway, that's pretty much what's going on right now.

The quest for more

In my epic journey to constantly perfect the website, I often come across myself, trying to solve some stupid problem, which often has a simple solution, had I given each a fair chance.
But if it is too messy, or too difficult to overview, I discard it instantly, even though it may have been just exactly what I was looking for.

Here's an example:
On the main page, there is a little block to the right, wherein blog entries of the current month is displayed. That worked to the extent of satisfaction.
The way it was done, was a rather, well lets be honest, shitty way.
By simply indexing the folder, in which the blog entries lay, determined by the current month through a variable, the individual files were linked to.
However, this block was usually empty, because I rarely blog about the site, or blog at all for that matter, therefore I decided it would be better to display the 5 previous posts.

But how was I to go about this, using my existing script? Well I couldn't, it would be too much work, for such a small task.
After banging my head against the wall for about 5-10 minutes, I thought "hmm...why not parse the headlines from the RSS feed, which comes along with blogger".
Alright, a firm solution, "I've done it before, I can do it again. I'll just copy over my already existing RSS parser script and add my RSS url from blogger, easy as that!" I said to my self.

But there was one problem...It wasn't an RSS feed...it was an Atom feed, which my ever-so-cleaverly-constructed-script wasn't capable of parsing.
"Dammit, fuck and shit" I then thought, and not necessarily in that order.

So on I went to the only friend a geek has got...Google...
Since I know absolutely next to nothing about how an Atom feed is constructed, I began my search for an already constructed php acript. Yes, I am lazy...shoot me.
Simply searching and finding what you need instantly is easier said than done.
First you gotta narrow down your search, so you only get the results you need. The only problem is; getting too precise about things, will leave you with no results. So then you gotta widen you search, thereby getting results you don't need, but yet have to browse through, just to make sure you don't need them.
This is very time-consuming, and it's a tedious process, which took me many hours.

Then finally, you think you got just exactly what you've been searching for, but then you find out after clicking through a million pages just to download the damn script, that it's written in either ASP or Python...well...fan-fucking-tastik...here I am, running PHP only, which also happened to be specified in my search, and you give me this shit? Fuck you...I ain't scared of you motherufckers!

Anyway, after searching long enough, I finally found a script I could modify to my liking, and...well you can see the results for yourself on the main page . thank you NotePage.

I'm always on the look out for new elements to add to the website. Just the other day I was browsing through the Google Code website, and found this little nifty newsbar written in JS and AJAX, and thought "Hey why not add this to the site, only with hentai related keywords", and so I did. Now the only problem is; Google doesn't index a lot of site, or rather NEWSsites, who run a lot of articles on hentai associated matters.
But I took the chance anyway, hoping I could add more sites...somewhere.

Also not too long ago, I became obsessed with social linking, and sites where you are able to bookmark websites and feeds alike.
But as I said, I'm constantly on for lookout for new things to add. My question is then: When is enough, enough? When do I need to stop? My own answer: I don't know...

If you have any cool features, addons, elements etc. you would like to see on this site, then by all means go ahead and post them here.
Likewise, if you think the site has had about all it can take, or you wanna see some things removed, post here as well.

If all goes according to plan, I'll blog again in 6 to 8 months time ;)

The Hentai Shag is back!

As you can read on the front page of the site, The Hentai Shag is finally back!

Not a lot has changed since last you visited, only some minor backend things have been corrected, such as invalid news ID's are no longer available for viewing.

In addition, some minor cosmetic things have been addressed as well. These are mainly very small changes, which you may not notice, such as text colour and the likes.

Some images have been removed from the header and the translation links/images from the footer as well. This is to reduce the overall load time of the site.

The game database has also been updated with all new games by Peach Princess.

I have currently no plans of adding any Japanese games to the database, but I might change my mind, depending on the amount released on the ed2k network, while I have been absent.

A whole new thing to the site, is the flash section. This section will collect various hentai flash animations from around the web. This section has only just been launched today, but should be fully working nonetheless.

It has been a while since I last touched upon PHP, or web coding in general. But I feel as though I should get back into the game.

I haven't been totally gone from the scene though. For a brief period of time, right after I shut the site down, I went over to HentaiShare, where I was assigned the post of handling all ed2k matters, including the release of games on the network.
However, this only lasted for a month or two, as I had many things on my hands, at the time.

Aside from being the "ed2k guy", I became a moderator (apparently...).
Though I am rarely to be seen posting, I lurk behind the scene, deleting any SPAM post, which may occur.
Fortunately the amount of SPAM posts have been reduced to a near 0%, thanks to the work of DeathMarine.

As time went by, the ed2k section of the board got deleted due to inactivity. I wasn't planning on using it anyway, as I had no ambitions of releasing anything on the network.
Nonetheless, I felt I needed to start a project. And why not take off where I left things?

The Hentai Shag was the perfect project for me.
Not only did it pose a challenge strictly coding wise, but also keeping my hobby alive, which is essentially why I reopened the site.

As you may have noticed, the site is no longer on its old domain (http://www.hentaishag.net).
As I let it expire sometime back in August, shortly after some advertisement company took it over and are not displaying unrelated ads.
I am currently unable to take the domain back, as it would mean paying double the price, merely to backorder it.
Even if I did backorder it, I probably wouldn't be able to get it back until sometime next September, which is why I really don't bother doing it.

But now that the site is back, I'm looking forward to once again spread the news from the hentai world, out to you people.

game DB OMG

Yeah...so...what started out as some 'minor' updating of the game database, has turned into some major restorations instead.
Many of the things are on the admin side, its basically stuff that helps me keep the DB neat and clean. But all that's stuff is boring, so I won't go into that.

The one major change on the user side, is the ed2k links, they have undergone a little change...know the ed2k mod for phpbb? You know the one that make the ed2k links 'clickable' ???

Yeah well I *cough*stole*cough* that and applied it to the game database, so now you're able to see the size of the link as well as how many sources by clicking the little image next to the link.
Now...many of the links looks a bit messy, that basically due to the filename...nothing I can do...so bear with me on that one...
Here's my pledge to all who release games on the ed2k network...or any other network for that matter. KEEP YOUR FILE NAMES CLEAN!!!!

I have begun the work on the Japanese section of the game database. I have worked my way through # to C.

I have tried my best to find info on the game, mostly getchu links.

Unfortunately, there are a few games, which information are well hidden, or non-existing. So this mean there are still some that do not have any info, nor any image.

I still need to find descriptions/reviews for some of the games. This is something I have not yet begun searching for, but I will try to find something for every game, at least a few lines ;)

I'm hungry now�?�maybe I�??ll work on it some more tonight, or maybe I�??ll wait till tomorrow.
