Spring NHS Induction Welcomes Seven New Members

Seven students were inducted as the newest members of the Heritage Academy Chapter of the National Honor Society at a Thursday evening candlelight ceremony. Colby Burke, Kelly Dodd, Braden Donayre, Caroline Latessa, Nailah Lester, Scarlett Walston and Rebecca Warth joined current members in pledging themselves to seek truth, hold scholarly habits, engage in worthy service, and lead in things that advance the well-being of all. Alex Shattuck, Brittnee Kratochvil, Nicole Okada, Gavan Roth delivered readings at the ceremony to enlighten the audience on the four pillars of the National Honor Society: Character, Scholarship, Service, and Leadership. Nate Anderson performed a personal reading related to the meaning of honor. Congratulations to all!

"The Mask" Honors International Prom Court

"The Mask", theme for the 2012 Heritage High School Prom, featured an international royalty court amidst a Mardi Gras atmostphere at beautiful Shipyard Beach Club. King Raimondo Franchi, and Prince Andreas Bacchi hail from Italy, while Queen Kate Alty comes from Canada, and Princess Kelly Dodd is American. Congratulations to all involved for a successful evening of good friends, great music, and fun.

President's Volunteer Service Award Goes to Nicholas Wheeler

For his exemplary community service, Nicholas Wheeler, Grade 8, has been selected to receive President Barack Obama's Volunteer Service Award. The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was presented by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Barack Obama. Nicholas participated in the Spirit of Community program this year as a representative of Heritage Academy and Beaufort County, SC. Recipients of this award vividly demonstrate that young people across America are making remarkable contributions to the health and vitality of their communities. These honorees practice a lesson we hope all young people, as well as adults, will emulate. Congratulations, Nicholas!

PM Golfer Phyllis Tang is Student of the Month

Kevin Ying Awarded SOM for Tolerance

Middle schooler Kevin Ying was selected by the faculty as January's Student of the Month for demonstrating the Heritage Honor Code qualities of a "tolerant" student and friend. His acceptance and understanding of different viewpoints and ideas is remarkable and earned him this award. Both teachers and students applaud Kevin. Way to go!

Keith Techasith Honored as Student of the Month

This week, teachers selected Keith Techasith as winner of the January Student of the Month Award for the virtue of "Tolerance". Keith exhibits an open mind and is understanding of everyone's ideas in the classroom as well as socially in the halls and off campus. "Fill the Van and Drive Out Hunger"

Heritage students moved full-speed ahead in a philanthropic effort to fill a mini-van with canned foodstuffs which helped to re-stock the shelves at the Deep Well Project in time for Thanksgiving. They successfully partnered with the other local businesses along New Orleans Road to collect nearly 400 pounds of canned goods-- enough to fill the van. The food drive will be followed by a "Toys for Tots" holiday toy drive in December. When it comes to putting others' needs first, Heritage students lead the way.

Heritage's 4 NCAA Early Signers

Four students signed early NCAA commitment agreements today for collegiate play in golf and tennis. Ashley Kitchen will play tennis on the University of Maryland team, and Katie Hoch is committed to join the Badgers tennis line-up at the University of Wisconsin. Laura Restrepo is will play golf at the University of Louisville, and Nicole Okada will swing into action with the ladies golfers at the University of Northern Colorado. These students earned a spot on the team of their choice school. Today's early signing indicates athletic excellence buttressed by a successful academic record. It means that these students have been identified by the coaches at a particular college or university and that they want this student to play for their team. By offering an early contract, which includes major scholarship dollars, the colleges are assured of the talents of an individual athlete for their team. This honor is the result of long-term commitment and planning on the part of the student and his or her family. The many years of discipline and involvement are rewarded when a scholar-athlete qualifies for a college team. Heritage is so proud to be the academic complement to such outstanding athletic prowess, and even more proud of our early signers today! Go Bears, Terrapins, Cardinals, and Badgers! Bravo!!

Students Take First Place Honors at Statewide Student Art Competition

Pailin Ruttanasupagid and Adam Augustin placed first in their respective grade divisions (9-10 and 7-8) at the 2011 Statewide SCISA Student Art Competition in Columbia, SC this past Friday. Both students entered intricately detailed and executed black/white pen and ink drawings. Among the hundreds of student entries, these two captured the experienced eyes of the art judges in this juried art show. Congratulations to you both on your outstanding talents in art! Bravo!!

"Doing the Right Thing" Has Its Reward

These young men were noticed by the faculty as two students who continuously demonstrate ethical behavior in and out of class, who know right from wrong and make the right decision each time they are faced with a dilemma. Marine Biologists Take to the Marsh

The marine biology class at Heritage Academy visited the marine estuary at Harbor Town. Students kayaked through the mud flats, salt marsh and Calibogue sound and discovered “the low country.” This term refers to an estuary with its numerous species of plants, birds, fish, predators and primary producers. An estuary is where the sea meets fresh water and our student experienced the turbulence of the sound and the calmness of the salt marsh.

Heritage students donned as much pink as they could to honor friends and family impacted by the disease of breast cancer and to visually demonstrate support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Students proudly competed for prizes by wearing as much pink as their wardrobes allowed. Winners included Soo Jin Lim, Keith Techasith, Sun Wongwaiwate, and Irisa Wong.

"Una visita a un restaurante atentico Mexicano con especialidades de la casa." The Spanish 4 senoritas and classmate Senor Braden Donayre, photographer, put their language acquisition into action on their first field trip. This one took them to an authentic Mexican restaurant where they sampled the specialties of the house. Their time at the local establishment was designed by teacher Mary Tuchscherer to be an experiential education adventure with all activity and interaction conducted in the Spanish language.

This month class officers were elected for the morning and afternoon sessions. In the AM session, seniors elected Raimondo Franchi as president, Gavan Roth as vice-president, and Phillip Talieh as treasurer. In the PM session, president elect is Nate Anderson; Jasper Volver is veep, and Julia Shin is treasurer. The Junior class officers are (AM) President Kelly Dodd, Vice-President Barbara Rodriquez, Treasurer Emily Hammond, and Secretary Tiffany Dorau. In the PM program elected were President Paige Cappelli, Vice-President Matt Rushton, Treasurer Spencer Woolfolk, and Secretary Renato Bordes. Sophomores in the AM program elected as president Andrew Goedde, as veep Alex Shattuck, as treasurer Bria Sanders, and as secretary Merritt Wilburn. Phyllis Tang and Irisa Wong are president and vice-president of the PM sophomore class. Freshmen elected Charles McCallum as president, Lohith Ramaraju as vice-president, and Veronica Vetesnik as treasurer. Congratulations to these student leaders of Heritage Academy!

Psychology Class Joins Memory Matters

Nicholas Wheeler: A Winning Ecologist

Middle School's Nicholas Wheeler, a 2011 winner of the US Achievement Academy Scholarship, is continuing his focus on "Helping Kids Help the Environment" by donating his $200 cash award to the Coastal Discovery Museum to pay for supplies for a new project at the museum utilizing the hidden artistic talents of the museum's Diamondback Terrapin, Myrtle the Turtle. With the Ace Basin environment and water ecology as his passion, Nicholas is a long-time volunteer naturalist at CDM and works with the museum directors to create and provide educational outreach programs to the community and visitors. Nicholas is spearheading a Kids' Beach Clean-Up October 8, 2011, at Mitchellville Beach Park on HHI. Come join in the fun!

National Merit Scholarship Finalist Brian White

Congratulations to Brian White! Today the National Merit Scholarship winners were announced, and Brian was named a National Merit Finalist for his outstanding academic achievement. With that coveted honor comes a monetary award of $2500 toward his tuition at Princeton University next fall.

Brian was chosen from a pool of more than 15,000 outstanding Finalists in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program. As award winner, he was judged among all finalists in the state to possess the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, according the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Middle School students will sit for one-hour math and English quarter assessments on May 23rd and for one-hour science and social studies quarter assessments on May 24th.
High School students are required to sit for exams at least 90 minutes. Extra time is allowed only for students with written and approved extended time accommodations.
All high school students should expect to remain in the classroom the entire two hour period. Students may bring reading material and are expected to remain quiet for the duration of the exam period.
Students are responsible to arrange through Residential Instructors/Houseparents/Parents transportation to-and-from exams.

Fall Semester 2011-2012 begins August 15^th.

Spirit Week Twin Day: Double the Pleasure, Double the Fun

"Twosday," April 5, brought "double the pleasure, double the fun" as it marked the second day of Spirit Week - Twin Day. The halls were alive with chipmunks, puppies, sparkling shoes, argyle socks, and a colorful array of clothing as students matched up as perfect twins. A contest was held during second and fifth blocks to determine the Best Dressed Twins. All Twin Day participants were given a vote to select the winner. The winners of the morning session were Davis Keough and Matt Moucharafieh, who displayed their swag with their multi-colored polka dot golf pants. The morning session Honorable Mention Twins were Chris Magi and Keanu Hasmana who must have made a stop at the newly opened Tanger Outlets this weekend to purchase their stylish attire. Dreammakers! Sleep-In at Heritage

Beginning the week with a dream, PJ Day commenced the first day of Spirit Week at Heritage Academy. Students gathered in the school library dressed in pajamas and brought their pillows, blankets, and stuffed animals to participate in a Sleep-In, a 15-minute power nap during first block. At the end of their Sleep-In, morning students also enjoyed a breakfast of bagels with cream cheese. Stuffed animals accompanied many students, but Ms. Hamilton’s dog, Bella, sported her dreamy fashion flare. What better way to spend a Monday morning? Please take the time to view the photos attached.
