Apparently, this week was full of people disclosing stupid things in the tech world. This one comes from the National Archives and Records Administration. They have “misplaced” aka “lost” a 2TB external hard drive that has confidential information from the White House during the Clinton administration. You read that right 2 terabytes, confidential info, White House, all in the same sentence. The drive had social security numbers, names, phone numbers, Secret Service and White House operating procedures, and even images of PC used in the White House. To top it all off, the drive was unencrypted and they don’t really know exactly how many records were “misplaced”.
I sure hope that other areas of the US Government take better steps to ensure they know where data is being kept, where those devices are whether they be drives, CDs, DVDs, or tapes, and at least encrypts them. I’m not a security expert in the computer field by any means, but I can think of TrueCrypt, Rohos, Windows Encryption, and BitLocker, just to name 4 ways to encrypt data. Sure, they may each have weaknesses, but it’s at least a start and they are all either free or come bundled with a Microsoft OS. I’m sure the government could use some of my tax dollars to purchase some high end encryption software. If not, at least buy a video camera to put at each exit and require all bags and purses to be checked like you do at the airports. We pay TSA agents around the country to make sure bad things don’t get brought onto planes. Couldn’t we do the same thing to make sure no storage devices enter or exit a government building without some kind of authorization?
I came across this tech story during the week about the owner of an RV company that overstepped his bounds. His first mistake was not providing a laptop to his sales manager. However, it doesn’t stop there. When the sales manager went looking for another job because he didn’t get the raise he was promised, his boss (because he had not left yet) decided to take his laptop…his personal laptop! Can you say theft? Then, in a brief moment of stupidity, his boss erased the hard drive!!! As a result, the sales manager sued his former boss, who got bought out by a bigger company and is being awarded $17.5 million dollars. $17.5 MILLION DOLLARS. I doubt the company will have staff use personal laptops for company work, and I would hope that they would think twice about stealing a personal laptop and erasing the files again.
This is too cool. It is a little old (April 17th), but I’m trying to catch up on e-mail. The FBI is using spyware to track down bomb threats and other criminal acts. It is nice to see that the FBI is making some progress in cyber warfare even if it is against what is probably the low tier hacking groups. I can only imagine that experienced hackers wouldn’t be foold by this. You can read the entire article on CNet by clicking here.
If you visit my site regularly, let’s face it, you are one of the few. You may have also noticed that I updated the theme and changed things up a bit on the main page of the domain www.davidhibler.com. I didn’t like having to add links to each site to reference the other sites I host here, so I decided to list them all on the main page. More changes will be coming soon, but I wanted to get the new design up and make minor changes instead of waiting until I had it all finished. I’m a perfectionist and had most of this ready on January 1st. I put it off for 2 months trying to get everything done and it is just taking too long.
