Last Sunday saw the launch of our new Vintage Beauty School Masterclass, and whilst we knew it would involve a drop of fizz and some generous dabs of cold cream, it was also nice to see the sun make an appearance too. The last few classes have seen our dedicated attendees battle wind, rain and snow, so the sun was a welcome (and much wished for) addit

For this class we looked back at products to cleanse the skin that would have been used many years ago on a regular basis, and despite the fact that they may have fallen out of fashion, some familiar names and remedies are still available. Smells can be very powerful on the memory part of the brain, and there were several remarks around the room about being reminded of elderly relatives by the products we were using.

In preparation for cleansing, we taught the class how to tie a head scarf, and away we went. Thanks to everyone who got stuck in! Once cleansed and prepped, we took the class through a typical vintage inspired look, from foundation through to eyebrow shapes, and of course the all important red lipstick and winged eyeliner.

Learning how to master liquid eyeliner can take time, so as always our attendees left with work packs to remind them of what they learned in class. If you like the look of this class, then we’re holding another on July 28th, tickets are already available for purchase.

Despite popular demand, we’ve continued to keep these classes to a number where we feel that we can give you all get plenty of individual attention. Our classes are really hands on and very relaxed. We often have people come on their own and it’s not at all unknown to see people swapping names to be facebook friends at the end of the sessions! The size of the classes, does mean that places are strictly limited though, so we do advise booking early! More details on July’s class

If you can’t wait until July then the next class we have tickets available for is our 60s Chic class on June 30th. This is another first for us, we’ve been wanting to do a sixties class for quite some time, and here it is! We’ll take you through back combing and styles of the decade, whether you have longs locks like Bardot or a cute crop like Twiggy, the sixties could be the look for you. We’re also going to take you through a 60s makeup look, so there will be plenty of opportunity for you to explore this exciting decade, which continues to influence the large and the small screen, along with designers and the high street. More details on June’s Class

Tickets are already selling for both of these classes, so don’t leave it too long! All our classes include work packs for you to take home, free cake to nibble on and cloudy lemonade and juice served in vintage china. Also available if you’re feeling a little more decadent is fizz by the tea-cup!

If you’d like to keep up to date with all of our events, don’t forget you can sign up to our monthly newsletter. Once again, a big thank to Sunday’s attendees for making the end of the week so fun!

It’s almost time for the weekend! Something we thought you might like to explore if you get some time for fun and interesting things is the BBC archive of Hollywood Voices. We know gathering around the laptop isn’t quite the same as huddling around the wireless, but this is an amazing website , where you can hear interviews with the likes of Bette Davis, Buster Keaton, Joan Crawford and Ginger Rogers, and that’s just for starters! Some are just a few minutes, others last for over an hour, so easy to fit one in between tasks or settle down with an Easter egg or two…..

Firstly, a huge thanks to the attendees of this months class. This month saw the return of the ever popular Everyday Vintage Hair Masterclass, and over the space of a few hours we worked through various techniques including back combing and victory rolls before encouraging the class to put these techniques into practice to create a style. By the end of the class we had an array of looks including victory rolls, faux rolls and a really rather awesome beehive.

Hopefully our ticket holder Marlie won’t mind us sharing this picture that she tweeted after the class, but she really does look super cute with her victory rolls don’t you think?

The popularity of this class means that we will repeat it later in the year, so don’t worry if you feel you’ve missed out. Both of April’s classes have now sold out, and we’re taking May off due to the bank holiday, so although it feels a million miles away, we’ve announced June and July’s classes!

Join us in June for a class dedicated to 60s style, which is set to be a very popular look for 2013, so whether you’re a vintage lover or a fashionista this will be a fab class. This workshop will take place over 2 1/2 hours and we’ll cover colours and shades of 1960s make up and show you how to use liquid eyeliner for that beautiful 60s style. In this class we’ll also look at the hairstyles of the time and show you how to create a 60s inspired look. A great class for any hair length, whether you’ve long hair like Jean Shrimpton, a cute crop like Twiggy and every length in-between. Tickets cost £25 including refreshments. Purchase your tickets here

In July you can join us for the return of our Vintage Beauty School. This is one of the classes that we’re holding in April, but as it sold out more than two months in advance we thought we’d better bring it back asap! Over this 2 1/2 hour masterclass we’ll take you through a full vintage skin care routine, using cold cream to remove your make up and cleanse your skin. Then we’ll show you how to put it back on again, with us on hand to help you leave looking like a vintage goddess.

We’ll talk you through different techniques to achieve a perfect matte flawless base, groomed brows, catlike eye-liner flicks and immaculate, long-lasting red lips and take you through the different brow and lip shapes that were fashionable in different decades. Tickets cost £25 including refreshments Purchase tickets here

We do keep these classes small which means on the plus side, we can give you plenty of hands on help, the downside to the small class size is that places are strictly limited, and we’re flattered and astonished that not only are tickets selling out so fast but that people are travelling from all over the country to join us. Thank you!

We’d also just like to say a huge thank you to all that nominated and voted for us in the Vintage Norwich Awards. The winners will be announced as part of a glitzy award ceremony on March 11th. There are some tickets available to buy if you’d like to join in with the party, perhaps a perfect way to show off your Historical Sauce inspired style! Further details

You may remember that we blogged previously about being invited to Hunstanton library to give a talk and demonstration on the make up and hair styles of the 1940s, along with the effects of the war on women’s style. It went down a storm and the library service kindly asked us back, so last week we found ourselves at Great Yarmouth library, giving our talk to another room full of people interested in knowing more (and in some cases reminiscing ) about style and life for women in the 1940s.

The library really got in to the swing of the decade, by offering a special 1940s menu in the cafe and we can confirm that the spam sandwiches and the bread and butter pudding were both delicious! Once again the turn out was fantastic and the age group wide-ranging. We opened the floor up to questions both during and after the talk/demonstration, and with questions ranging from the history of mascara to where the Sauces get their clothes from, it was a really interesting session.

(Pictures courtesy of Great Yarmouth library)

With the Q&A over, we invited everyone to head to the back of the room where we had workstations set up to allow everyone to have a go at recreating some 1940s inspired style themselves. With very little encouragement needed at all from us, the back of the room soon became a place where vintage makeovers began to happen.

With all the Sauces on hand to help various techniques if needed, the ladies (of all ages) soon had a touch of vintage glamour to their look of the day. It was lovely seeing friends help each other, along with people who hadn’t met before come together and get creative! It was a great day, some rather wonderful hair was created and we’re pretty sure a few ladies fell back in love with lipstick too.

A big thank you to Great Yarmouth library and everyone that joined us on the day.

For this months masterclass we decided to bring some glamour from the 1920s to 2012, we think the twenties is a great look for the festive season. Our ticket holders took on the challenges of the Great British weather to join us last Sunday, and as always we were there to welcome them into the cosy surroundings of Olives, a beautiful old listed building on the corner of Elm Hill Norwich. The fridge was stocked with fizz and we had teapots of cool green tea so it wasn’t long before the attendees were all sitting comfortably and ready to begin.

Once again, we were joined by several people have been to our previous classes, so it was a lovely mix of familiar faces and new ones. For this class we looked at how to achieve a twenties inspired look that you could easily wear today, some ladies wanted to create dramatic evening looks, whilst others wanted a more muted finish. We discussed popular colours of the day for eye make up, and the all important very thin and rounded eyebrow shape.

With many beautiful ladies of the twenties being familiar names still today, Louise Brooks and Clara Bow were names that came up several times in conversation. When it came to the lips, we chatted about over drawing to create that classic cupid bow mouth shape. Over drawing always raises an eyebrow, as it feel like it’s something totally alien to man,y but as always us Historical Sauces got well and truly stuck in along with our ticket holders, so even the faint hearted had a helping hand and had us close by to chat through the process.

Following the make up session was a hair demonstration and we proved that twenties inspired hair is achievable on ALL lengths of hair. We looked at faux bobs, creating shape at the front of the hair and kiss curls. We also advised our ladies to go and raid their jewellery boxes for hair accessories, as beads and sparkly brooches gripped in to the hair make super stylish finishes to a twenties look and it was good to see people wanting to get straight in to action with some kirby grips to see what they could create on themselves.

After the masterclass, it was time for Sip and Shop and we were very pleased to have guest sellers Wake Up Little Susie and Sugar and Hatter join us for the evening. The cocktails certainly flowed and people streamed through the door, which was quite amazing as the weather was pretty atrocious that evening! However it was good to see that people will battle through wind and rain to come and join us for cocktails and some shopping!

We’ve two seasonal special Sip and Shops coming up next month, so do get your diaries out and keep these dates free. Each one will have different guest sellers so we hope this helps you with your Christmas shopping! All our sellers are small, local, independent businesses, so these events really are a fab way to shop local, whilst having the joy of a cocktail or two. We’re also happy to confirm that there will be 25% off drinks before 7pm, so what a great way to finish a day at work!

The first is Thurs Dec 13th 5:30 – 9pm and the next one is Thurs Dec 20th 5:30-9pm

See you there!

Visit our Facebook page for more photos from our events
