Review

Story

Irendri (Lakshmi Manchu) is a witch who takes over the world from her place - Angarajyam. Moksha (Baby Harshita) is a small girl who has special divine powers. Yodha (Siddharth) is a blind warrior. Irendri wants to kill Moksha and Yodha is entrusted with the job of gaurding Moksha. The rest of the story is all about how Moksha gets rid of Irendri with the help of Yodha. There is also a love story for Yodha.

Artists Performance

It is virtually impossible for any young hero in Telugu cinema to accept a blind man’s role. Siddharth is very brave to brace this character that flows with the narration of the movie. Siddharth is fabulous. Shruti Hassan is glamorous with her exotic looks. However, it is Lakshmi Manchu who steals the show. Her make-up, dialogue delivery and screen presence is terrific. Baby Harshita is impressive with her work. Ravi Babu is nice as the lieutenant of witch with the funny oneliner ‘nimma daanimma’. Brahmanandam and Ali have a few funny scenes.

Technical departments

Story - screenplay - direction: Story of the film is like Chandamama katha (fairy tale). The director didn’t succumb to the commercial trap and narrated it in a way it should be. Prakash Kovelamudi is excellent with visuals and presentation. He is highly imaginative. He introduced all the characters excellently. However, the movie has only one orientation throughout the movie - witch seeking the kid. A couple of secrets revealed in the second half are interesting. But, he couldn’t get the emotions strong enough on the screen to rise the tempo.

Other departments: Songs are composed by 4 different music directors and all the songs are good. Background music composed by Salim Sulaiman is excellent. Visuals in this movie are of extraordinary quality. It is the result of collective team work by the cinematographer (Sounder Rajan) and visual effects team (Firefly). There are many visual effects that doesn’t appear like effects to naked eyes. There are graphics worth 72 minutes in this movie (half of the total runtime). Art direction by Bhupesh Bhupathi is superb. The costumes, make-up and get-ups are of top-notch. Dialogues by T Rajasimha are pretty good and they might sound odd for the regular moviegoers because the dialogues were written in pristine Telugu though he used contemporary cheap words like jaffa. Production values of the movie are humongous. Disney has made sure that their first Indian production is at par with their Hollywood projects in terms of technical and production values.

Analysis: When was the last time we have the hero playing the role of a blind man? When was the last time a Telugu movie had a young woman as a villain? Anaganaga O Dheerudu is a brave attempt that defies many stereotypes and cliches of Telugu cinema. But at the same time, it is extremely important for any director to get the emotions flared up at the crux moments. Prakash Kovelamudi who stuck with the script made sure that the story is narrated like a fairy tale, but he couldn't get the right emotions/tempo (suspense or utkantha) towards the climax of the movie. The plus points of the movie are extraordinary visuals, lead performances (especially Lakshmi Manchu) and classic style of story-telling. The negative point of the movie is the lack of emotional depth/connect. On a whole, Anaganaga O Dheerudu is a universal movie that aims at kids in the family and the kid inside you.

Vedam to be remade in Tamil

Nagarjuna’s cameo in Vijayendra Prasad film

Annapurna Studios is going to produce writer Vijayendra Prasad’s next directorial venture. It is a period story based in a Telangana village. Nagarjuna will be playing a cameo in this movie. There will be two fights for Nagarjuna’s character and these fights will be choreographed by SS Rajamouli. SS Rajamouli is the son of Vijayendra Prasad who gave stories for all his blockbusters except Maryada Ramanna. Manoj Manchu’s latest film Jhummandi Naadam is going to release on 1st July. Lakshmi Manchu is officially producing this movie for the first time. The press meet was attended by Mohan Babu, Manoj Manchu, Lakshmi Manchu, Tapsee, K Raghavendra Rao and Ashok.

Mohan Babu said, “Lakshmi Prasanna Pictures banner was launched in Vijaya Gardens, Chennai and It was launched by NTR. Dasari Padma lighted the lights. My first film was launched in Tirupati and Chandra Babu Naidu sounded the clapboard. I produced Major Chandrakath film with my favourite hero NTR in 1992. Lakshmi Prasanna sounded the clapboard for Major Chandrakanth and Chandra Babu Naidu switched on the camera. NTR nominated be to Rajyasabha. It all happened because of my discipline and sincerity. K Raghavendra Rao directed Alludu Garu as his first film on our banner. I produced 56 films so there. There were record breaking movies as well as unsuccessful films. Recently Dasari said that I am the only actor who produced so many films in the history of India. It is truth, indeed.”

“K Raghavendra Rao is directing a film in our banner after a gap of 14 years. It is every actor’s dream to act in K Raghavendra Rao’s movies. K Raghavendra Rao brings stardom to actors. I was a zero before Alludu garu and he made me hero with that movie. I am not doing many films these days. I am concentrating more on my educational institute as I want to serve people. Lakshmi Prasanna is turning full-fledged producer with this movie and I wish that audiences will bless her with the success.”

“There are nine songs in the movie and all are good. K Raghavendra Rao gives lot of comfort and peace to the producer he is working for. I am like a financier. Producer Lakshmi and executive producer Ashok did budgeting for the movie and K Raghavendra Rao completed the budget within the limit. He said that we should spend as per the market limit of hero. I wanted to spend more, but K Raghavendra Rao didn’t want it.”

“Manoj has been growing his stature as an actor from Nenu Meeku Telusa movie. He succeeded in all movies since then. He is also working with outside producers. We want to release the movie on 1st July. It will be the biggest release in the career of Manoj in terms of number of prints. It was my daughter who selected the heroine Tapsee. K Raghavendra Rao endorsed her. She is a disciplined girl and she is like our family member. I was the one who took legend NTR to Shirdi for the first time. We presented him with a big Shirdi Sai Baba’s idol at that time. We went to Shirdi recently and I presented K Raghavendra Rao with another idol of Sai Baba.”

Producer Lakshmi Manchu said, “I would like to thank my father for guiding me during the production of Jhummandi Naadam. K Raghavendra Rao used to ask me for my opinion even though a director of his stature doesn’t need. It gave me great experience and I learnt a lot as a producer because it is directed by K Raghavendra Rao. I am acting in his son Prakash’s movie. I want to thank Manoj Manchu as well. K Raghavenda Rao used to say ‘Veedu Samanyudu Kaadu’ whenever Manoj enacts a scene in the sets. I also contemplated on using it as title of this movie. The combination of K Raghavendra Rao and Mohan Babu is a reputed one. I am happy to introduce a talented artist like Tapsee as heroine through this movie. My mom used to get home food whenever I wanted it. I want to thank media for supporting us throughout. I will continue doing good movies in the future as well.”

Tapsee said, “I am happy to make my debut with this movie and I want to thank Mohan Babu for making me feel like his family member. I love listening to the songs of Jhummandi Naadam and I listened to them innumerable times. I want to thank K Raghavendra Rao for giving us such a great music. I leant a lot about acting from K Raghavendra Rao. Producer Lakshmi treated me well and Manoj cooperated a lot during the shoot. S Gopal Reddy has shown me really beautiful on the screen.”

Manoj Manchu said, “I feel fortunate to act in the direction of K Raghavendra Rao. He is like a God and its very comfortable working in his direction. Keeravani and S Gopal Reddy’s work is going to be really good. I worked under the direction of K Raghvendra Rao along with my father in Major Chandrakanth movie. I was tensed to work with my father in this movie, but Raghavendra Rao gave me lot of confidence. It would be better if I tell something good about the movie after the release.”

Thunder in Merupu’s shooting

Chennai is famous for water scarcity. You can see scores of people with buckets and pots fighting for water. But in the case of director Dharani, the same water has become the enemy. He had to stop the shooting of Ram Charan Teja’s ‘Merupu’ for a couple of days due to heavy rains. The specially laid set in B & C Mills in Chennai is looking deserted with this decision and one wonders what Kajal is doing in this unofficial vacation. It’s expected that the shooting might restart after a week.

Subhapradam hits music stands on June 20th

Producers Hari Gopala Krishna Murthy and Sheela Neela Tilak claims, “though the film has Vishwanath’s mark, the audience will also see a different Naresh in this film.
