It looks like we'll have some Survivor: NHL Playoffs eliminations next week unless something dramatic happens in those playoff series, so be ready for the first wave of contestants who will make their home from Survivor Island. Beyond that, our hosts have a pile of hockey news to discuss, so make sure you're ready to go tonight for The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!

Tonight, Teebz and Jason will likely spend a lot of time dissecting the words spoken by the man to the left at his season-ending press conference among the topics they discuss. There will be some chatter about cronyism in the KHL, some trademarked names for an AHL team, some European league winners, a quick AIHL update, a sledge hockey update, a Survivor: NHL Playoffs prizing update, a couple of quick hits about UMFM's Pledge-O-Rama that begins tomorrow, and we'll go over Kevin Cheveldayoff's words with a fine-toothed comb. It will be a busy hour of hockey chatter, so snuggle up to your radio or internet-streaming device tonight for The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!

If you live outside Winnipeg and want to listen, we have options! The UMFM website's streaming player works well if you want to listen online. We also recommend Radio Garden if you need an easy-to-use online stream. If you're more of an app person, we recommend you use the TuneIn app found on the App Store or Google Play Store.

If you have questions, you can email all show queries and comments to hockeyshow@umfm.com! Tweet me anytime with questions you may have by hitting me up at @TeebzHBIC on Twitter! I'm here to listen to you, so make your voice heard! And because both Teebz and Jason are on the butterfly app where things are less noisy, you can find Teebz here and Jason here on Bluesky!

Tonight, Teebz and Jason chat bad hirings, bad names, big winners, Australian fun, sledge developments, Survivor updates, pledge drives, lots of verbal diarrhea, and much more exclusively on 101.5 UMFM and on the UMFM.com web stream!

Ok, maybe we're overselling that a wee bit, but tonight is the only night where you can enter Survivor: NHL Playoffs to be part of the fun! Sixteen teams have already clinched playoff spots with most of the matchups for the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs being set, sixteen entrants will get into the Survivor pool tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!

Tonight, Teebz and Jason will be looking for entrants who want into the 2026 edition of Survivor: NHL Playoffs! The rules and information you need about the contest is here, and tonight is when we get sixteen people to choose numbers to find out which team is assigned to each entrant! As numbers start to be removed from the board, the chances of landing a top-seeded team may increase or decrease depending on which teams remain so you're going to have to weigh the odds if you want one of the superpowers. What I can tell you is that if you call between 5:30pm and 6:30 CT at (204) 269-8636, your chances of getting into the Survivor: NHL Playoffs contest will never be better! Settle in, tune into the show, and get your phone out tonight for Survivor: NHL Playoffs on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!

If you live outside Winnipeg and want to participate, you're still welcome to enter the contest! The UMFM website's online streaming player works well if you want to listen online. We also recommend Radio Garden if you need an easy-to-use online stream. If you're more of an app person, we recommend you use the TuneIn app found on the App Store or Google Play Store. It's a solid app.

If you have questions, you can email all show queries and comments to hockeyshow@umfm.com! Tweet me anytime with questions you may have by hitting me up at @TeebzHBIC on Twitter! I'm here to listen to you, so make your voice heard!
Tonight, Teebz and Jason take calls from sixteen people to get them registered for the 2026 edition of Survivor: NHL Playoffs heard on The Hockey Show exclusively on 101.5 UMFM and on the UMFM.com web stream!
If you listened last week, our hosts got part-way through one interview while not having enough time to play the second, so they'll clear those off the docket tonight. There's also leagues that are wrapping up which need some discussion and some news from other leagues that will generate chatter. There will be lots of wrapping up tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!

From there, they discuss John Tortorella replacing Bruce Cassidy in Las Vegas, the Toronto Maple Leafs dismissing GM Brad Treliving, the Montreal Canadiens being in a weird broadcasting situation, and they'll go over all the results from Europe where professional seasons are wrapping up this month. There's even announcements for the next two shows! It's going to be a busy hour on the program tonight, so get your ears perked up for The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!

Tonight, Teebz and Jason chat more PWHL, coaching changes, management changes, broadcasting changes, European leagues, future shows, and much more exclusively on 101.5 UMFM and on the UMFM.com web stream!
This time of year is where the grass starts to turn green, the leaves start budding on trees, the ice and snow recede to places no one needs to think about until October, but it's also the month where the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs begin. With the latter event about to settle into life on April 18, The Hockey Show is preparing for another postseason of fun where 16 listeners get a shot at claiming the title of "champion"!

We've been teasing and promoting Survivor: NHL Playoffs on The Hockey Show, so we'll re-plant the flag on the beach that says Survivor's NHL Island is open for business once again this year! As we've been talking about on the radio show over the last couple of weeks, our take on a Survivor contest is returning to the airwaves again as we look to crown a winner, award prizes to worthy competitors, and bestow fame and glory on the final entrant standing as The Hockey Show's 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs survivor!

It's pretty clear that UMFM owns no island in a tropical climate nor a boat that will get you there, and our annual show budget of $0.00 says Jason and I will never get to broadcast from an island in the south Pacific. However, if you're aware of the Survivor pools that are run, our contest is based on the same idea where you randomly pick a name of one of the contestants, and that person on Survivor is your person for the run of the show. If he or she is voted off the island, the game for you is over. In our contest, though, we put our own twist on the game so it becomes much more hockey-centric.

Jason and I are seeking sixteen people to call The Hockey Show on April 16, 2025 where each of those callers will choose a number from 1 to 16. Each of those sixteen numbers will have a corresponding NHL playoff team assigned to it randomly. Whatever number you've chosen will reveal your team for the playoffs, and that team becomes YOUR team in a similar random fashion to Survivor pools. All you have to do is be near your phone that evening between 5:30pm and 6:30pm Central Time, call us, and choose one of the numbers on the board to find out what playoff team you'll be rooting for in the playoffs!

If you need a real-world example of how this works, let's say that Jason were to call in and choose #6. We'll flip that card over to reveal that #6 has the Dallas Stars under it. Officially, Jason's team becomes the Stars until they're eliminated or they win, and card #6 is no longer available as a choice for the next callers. Jason will hopefully be cheering as a Stars fan this spring until they're done playing.

Following Jason's call, let's say that I call in next and select #13 as my number, revealing the Carolina Hurricanes. Carolina would become my team until they're eliminated or they win, and card #13 is no longer available as a choice for the next callers. Wash, rinse, repeat until there are no numbers and teams remaining. Easy, right?

If you think you're up for this, you'll need to have your radio tuned to The Hockey Show on April 16 and have your phone close to you. Before you commit, though, what we haven't told you yet is that there's a twist in all of this radio fun. And this twist is where things get crazy fun for everyone involved because you participate!

Just when you think you're out, you're still in the contest until "Tribal Council". You may be wondering how a radio show does "Tribal Council", but we already know your team was eliminated so you've technically been voted off Survivor's NHL Island. However, every episode of Survivor ends with the contestant voted off doing their exit interview, and that's precisely what you will do: you'll deliver an exit interview for your team! We'll call you, set up the quick two- or three-minute chat about your team, and then you're officially done with the contest and sent off the island. Easy-peasy, right?

Some of you may worry about talking on the radio, but I assure you it's just like talking on the phone. In other words, don't think we're going to make it sound weird or anything. But knowing that this is going to happen, what might you say? You're free to talk about how you're disappointed that a specific player didn't show up in the playoffs or how you never thought there would be an upset this early or how you're just lucky that your chosen team made the playoffs. Or you can be like Jacob and talk about your team embarrassed you.

While the CBS version of Survivor promises a big cash prize and whole bunch of prizes from sponsors - both of which The Hockey Show doesn't have - we will be offering up some prizing that aligns with our lack of CBS's budget. There will be some smaller prizes handed out as "challenge prizes" much like the network reality show does, and those challenges that all teams can win in the contest are as follows:

First shutout recorded in the playoffs.

First hat trick recorded in the playoffs.

First goaltender point recorded in the playoffs.

First team eliminated from the playoffs.

First to advance from the second round to the third round.

First team to score seven goals in one game in the playoffs.

First upset of the playoffs.

The first team that accomplishes any of these challenge goals will earn their Survivor player a corresponding prize! We have various hockey books and other assorted smaller prizes to be won this year, but you'll need to earn them through the challenges above. Any prizes won through these challenges will be handed out chronologically while supplies last in the order they were completed! Teams can also earn more than one prize in this challenge part of the contest, so choose wisely when it comes to the randomly-distributed teams! Or choose your favorite number. Either strategy works in this contest!

Just like the TV show, we do offer prizes for the finalists! The grand prize winner who captures the Survivor crown will take home their choice of an NHL jersey plus a few additional prizes! The finalist will get a jersey not chosen by the winner as a runner-up prize, so you're going home with a prize as long as your team makes it through three rounds which is pretty awesome! This year's two jerseys are a 2018-21 Pittsburgh Penguins alternate jersey and a 2021-24 Washington Capitals alternate jersey, so the winner may have a difficult choice to make when it comes to which jersey he/she takes home!

As a new wrinkle to this year's contest, The Hockey Show will also be asking if you plan on supporting UMFM's Pledge-O-Rama event that runs between April 24 at 6:30pm until 8:00pm on May 1. For anyone who enters the Survivor: NHL Playoffs contest AND donates to Pledge-O-Rama, we'll put you into an additional draw for even more prizes! You help us, we'll reward you - it's that simple.

I should also be upfront and inform you that we have some requirements that need to be met before you can participate. The good news is we won't need a medical team available like CBS does for their version of Survivor, but we do have a few must-have REQUIREMENTS for anyone to participate. They include:

You must call into the show on Thursday, April 16 between 5:30pm and whenever we fill all the spots in the contest. If all 16 spots aren't filled within the hour, Jason and I will get creative to fill the empty spots. Don't complain - you had an hour to make one phone call!

You must have a phone number and an email address. If you're calling us, I'm pretty sure you have at least one of these already. If you have neither, are you even alive?

A desire to watch your chosen team's progress in the NHL Playoffs. You don't need to follow them religiously, but it's better to know something if/when your team is eliminated.

Beyond that, this is a fun contest meant for laughter with a few rewards for those who get lucky. It's not to be taken seriously in any way, and it's a nice way for us to reward our loyal listeners with some free gear. If this has enticed you to listen for the first time or come back to the show after not listening, welcome to the show and here's hoping you get into the contest! Just remember, though, that if your team gets bounced, we're calling you for that exit interview. If that scares you in any way, work through that fear... or just win!

Be ready, folks, because this contest always is fun for everyone involved. Like CBS' Survivor, only one person can be crowned as "survivor" in this contest, and we're ready to kick things off on April 16! Here's hoping you'll call in for the best radio contest in hockey!

Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!

The Hockey Show - Episode 705

The Hockey Show, Canada's only campus-produced radio show that strictly talks hockey, is back tonight with a full recap show of some of the events that happened last weekend in Elmira, in Halifax, and in Winnipeg. Honestly, it was a busy weekend of hockey action in those three cities, and our hosts will try to bring everyone up to speed on what happened in those cities. Frankly, it was a very entertaining weekend of hockey no matter which event one focused on, so we'll look at the two tournaments that determined university supremacy and the big game tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!
They'll have thoughts, opinions, and discussion about each of the events including who won, who didn't win, and all of the incredible action seen from the two National Championships before spending a larger amount of time discussing the PWHL's arrival in Winnipeg, the viability of the PWHL in Winnipeg, and the results from that game. As a bonus, Teebz sat down with both Kendra Woodland and Kaitlyn Ross of the Ottawa Charge to chat about their careers, so don't miss those! There's lots to discuss, so tune in tonight to The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!
Our guest is well-versed in the game of hockey, and her experiences with both the ECHL's Fort Wayne Komets and ACHA's Indiana Tech Warriors has led to her going to school to get even more knowledge on the game. Tonight, it's excited to welcome back Fiona Quinn who will give us some insight on ECHL news, Komets news, Warriors news, and more stories from her spot in the pressbox tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!
And yes, we ask about the sweater she's wearing in the photo as well because, frankly, that's AWESOME! Everything appeared to be heading towards that fate until I received an email today that changed my schedule and could add a lot of fun to the upcoming weekend. I'll still be watching games, but I'll also be attending a game and chatting with players thanks to receiving some media credentials today!

I applied a long time ago to the PWHL to see if we could bring The Hockey Show down to the practices that the Montreal Victoire and the Ottawa Charge would hold here in Winnipeg as part of the PWHL's Takeover Tour. I had followed up emails that went unanswered, and I figured that our application had likely been rejected with a number of media outlets potentially competing for radio broadcast rights.

UMFM wasn't looking for that nor does the station possess the financial backing to bid on those rights, but Jason and I figured that The Hockey Show could bring its unique interview style to the PWHL if we were granted access. After all, we had a blast talking to Savannah Harmon when she skated with Ottawa, we had too many laughs with Logan Angers after she was drafted, and we had a great chat with author and CBC reporter Karissa Donkin about lots of PWHL news and topics. Surely, there had to be room for The Hockey Show at the Winnipeg stop of the PWHL's Takeover Tour, right?

Consider me surprised this afternoon when an email landed in my inbox stating that The Hockey Show would be involved as Jason and I received media credentials for all of the weekend's activities hosted by the PWHL! That's not to say we fit in at all the activities, but we're going to work on getting at least one interview with a player!

Friday night will also see me attend a workshop held by the Ottawa Charge where interested parties can interact with a panel of people from the Charge regarding meaningful career paths in sports, insider knowledge, and forging real connections with professionals working in the PWHL. I have lots of questions for the panel that reportedly includes Charge GM Mike Hirshfeld and Charge Hockey Operations Director Olivia Giardetti, so hopefully there will be a good discussion!

That doesn't mean that I won't still have my phone or laptop nearby so I can keep tabs on what's happening in Elmira and Halifax, but it's pretty exciting to be included in one of the bigger hockey events to visit Winnipeg in the last number of years. At no point did I think Winnipeg would be a landing spot for the PWHL despite the strong women's hockey market in the city, but clearly I thought wrong.

Considering that we've had the privilege of calling the Female World Sport School Challenge thanks to Balmoral Hall School, the Cross Border Classic thanks to Sledge Hockey Manitoba and Team Manitoba parahockey, and now we get to chat with PWHL players and sit in the pressbox for their game, I'd say The Hockey Show is feeling very humbled and extremely grateful for these opportunities.

I'll do my best this weekend to keep the blog updated with U SPORTS women's hockey information, but things may be posted a little later than usual depending on where I am during the day or evening thanks to this media access we've been granted. Both Jason and I are excited to forge a few friendships with PWHL players where possible, and we'll look to have some exclusive coverage on The Hockey Show in the coming weeks! It'll be a busy weekend, but it will be worth it!

Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!

The Hockey Show - Episode 703

The Hockey Show, Canada's only campus-produced radio show that strictly talks hockey, hits the UMFM airwaves tonight once again as we settle in for some more hockey talk. From there, the two hosts discuss the Paralympics and Canada's chances at a para ice hockey gold medal, Matthew Tkachuk being the dumbest hockey player alive, the PWHL's struggles in Ottawa, the Ottawa Senators earning a draft pick back, the DEL with great numbers, players going pro, and more! It's another busy show with a lot to go over from all variations of hockey being played across the globe, so make sure you tune in tonight for The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!
It's been a busy week with playoffs starting, teams pushing for playoff spots, and teams loading up for playoff runs, so we'll talk about a lot of that stuff tonight with a few more stories mixed in. We'll be all over the map as we discuss all sorts of stories tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!
They discuss the Cross Border Classic sledge hockey series happening at the Hockey For All Centre this weekend that you should attend, they take a look at the Canada West semifinals which have given us the finalists and Canada West's teams for the National Championships, and they discuss all the non-deadline trades that have happened so far. On top of that, there will be stories about North Dakota going green, Troy Ryan looking for a change, James Hardie's incredible adventure, Maryville University stepping up, and a legend stepped away from the game. It's going to be a busy hour, so settle in for The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!
I'm not sure I've ever felt as less excited for hockey as I was last night with NHL players being back on the ice after what we witnessed in Milano-Cortina, but it's going to be hard for the NHL to replicate the hockey we witnessed in Italy. That being said, we have lots to go over and discuss tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!
This may be a heated discussion as our hosts discuss the optics of appearing at the White House while playing for a Canadian team, the lack of respect shown to the US women's team, and the extra honour bestowed upon Connor Hellebuyck before looking at the NHL returning to TV and just how bad those broadcasts look, the Olympic injuries seen and why some owners may think twice about sending players, the Canada West men's and women's semifinal series, and there's a big weekend of sledge hockey coming up that needs to be highlighted! It should be a feisty show tonight with everything on the agenda, so make sure you're ready for The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!
There aren't many weekly shows that have lasted as long as this hour has, but we're climbing the rungs of history at UMFM. When you consider that The Simpsons has been on the air for 37 seasons and only have 805 episodes to their name, we must be holding our own in the hockey chatter realm. In all honesty, though, we are grateful and thankful for each and every person who has tuned in for a segment or a season or the entire run of shows, and we're hoping to deliver another good one today! Buckle up because we have a couple of great guests joining us tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!
We'll talk to them about being selected as the netminders for Team Manitoba, how they got into sledge hockey, their other pursuits, the upcoming Cross Border Classic, the Olympics, the Paralympics, and more! This show should be a beauty with medals on the line in Italy and two great guests who love the game of hockey in Paul and Jon, so hunker down around the radio for The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!
We saw the Canadian women stumble in their quest for gold, the Canadian men start their quest for gold, and a few other storylines that have emerged in hockey and other sports that are worthy of discussion. What shouldn't be forgotten is that even small mistakes in a competition can effect the outcome of the event, and that's why the Olympics are about the best athletes being the most prepared for these events. We'll jump into the stories, news, and chatter from Italy tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!
Beyond that, they'll also discuss the injury to Marie-Philip Poulin, Team Canada's start at the men's hockey event, why trying to find highlights and clips of the game is next to impossible, an athlete who was sent home despite some hypocrisy, how Olympic goalies are dealing with new equipment, and a cool moment from one US team on the ice. It should be a full sixty-minutes of Olympic chatter, so get settled in for The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!
Our hosts are back in the UMFM studios tonight where they'll be talking about the big tournament over in Italy among the discussion tonight as the latest version of the games becomes the first Winter Olympiad to be co-hosted by two cities! Beyond that, they also discuss Gavin McKenna's legal troubles from one dumb move, the reason for delaying the Canada-Finland game today and how that's affecting the men's team, a forgotten name signing a contract in the ECHL, the dissolution of the Washington Post's sports department, and the two stoat mascots above in Tina and Milo! Obviously, our hosts had a blast seeing some of the best women's hockey action this province has to offer at the 2026 Female World Sport School Challenge, and they'll wrap up that experience with some well-deserved thank-yous, a recap of what happened, and a discussion on where the tournament may go from here. And then they'll talk other hockey stuff too! It's a fun episode with looks at hockey from across the globe tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!
Beyond that discussion, they'll also chat about the results and who finished where, highlights for each of the two radio voices, and where they may see the tournament going in 2027. They'll also discuss a former Bisons coach getting the bump to head coach in another league, an SDHL team that is making a hard decision on its future, the KHL being the KHL with some of the news coming out of that league, and there's an exciting development coming out of the University of Waterloo about concussion detection! It should be an interesting show based on those stories and more, so make sure you're listening tonight to The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!
Live radio has a certain unpredictability to it that is unlike anything else except for live television, and it's that unpredictability that makes covering events a bit of a thrill. It is with great honour that UMFM has been invited to cover the 2026 Female World Sport School Challenge once again, and we are proud to working with the great people at Balmoral Hall School to bring these broadcasts to hockey fans once again! That will all happen this weekend, so let's see why you may want to tune in or watch in-person at the Hockey For All Centre in Winnipeg!

As you you may recall from past tournaments, this tournament was always run by the St. Mary's Academy Flames. After they decided to cut their prep hockey program, the tournament was in jeopardy of being eliminated from the hockey scene, but Balmoral Hall School stepped in to fill the void left by the Flames' absence. That effort will see the tournament continue this weekend from January 22-25 as nine teams battle for the gold medal and bragging rights!

This year's tournament will have a very local flavour as all nine teams are from Manitoba. There were a number of non-Manitoba AAA and CSSHL teams that couldn't squeeze the tournament into their schedules, but they have expressed interest in participating next season. That being said, Balmoral Hall decided to make this year's event into a showcase of the best women's hockey this province has to offer as six MFHL teams and all three Manitoba-based CSSHL teams will participate! If you wanted a best-on-best format, you got it!

UMFM will be broadcasting from the PCL Arena once again this year, and that gives us the honour of calling nine FWSSC games. All games being broadcast can be heard on the UMFM Second Stream internet stream beginning Thursday afternoon while your favorite programming continues on the 101.5 FM frequency. We are excited for the action, so here are the games you'll hear:

2:15pm January 22 - Balmoral Hall vs. Winnipeg Avros

7:30pm January 22 - Interlake Lightning vs. Pilot Mound

9:00am January 23 - Winnipeg Ice vs. Pilot Mound

5:00pm January 23 - Balmoral Hall vs. Westman Wildcats

9:15am January 24 - Interlake Lightning vs. Winnipeg Ice

2:05pm Janaury 24 - Pilot Mound vs. Pembina Valley Hawks

5:30pm January 24 - SKILLS COMPETITION!

9:00am January 25 - Championship semifinal

11:30am January 25 - 5th-place game

2:00pm January 25 - FWSSC Gold Medal Game

In total, there will be nine games plus the special event on Saturday night that will be broadcast via the UMFM Second Stream, so you shouldn't have any excuse when it comes to catching a few games as any internet-connected device can carry the broadcasts. Even if you can't get to the Hockey For All Centre, UMFM will make sure you have a window into the best women's hockey tournament in the province!

You may have noticed the words "SKILLS COMPETITION!" above. Balmoral Hall decided that they wanted to put their own stamp on the 2026 Female World Sport School Challenge with something a little different, so they're going to run a skills competition where girls from all nine teams will get a shot to show off their dangles, clap-bombs, snipes, and saves! UMFM will pull off some magic by moving rinks with all of our equipment, but we're going to bring you the 2026 FWSSC Skills Competition in full with a pile of interviews and chatter as we cover the event and see which players make their marks!

What's not on the broadcast schedule above is Thursday night's episode of The Hockey Show which will also take place at the 2026 Female World Sport School Challenge as Jason and I broadcast the show live from the rink prior to the 7:30pm game between the Interlake Lightning and Pilot Mound Buffaloes. There likely will be a few players who pop by for a chat, we'll get everyone updated on the afternoon games, and we'll chat about some hockey stories before the evening game, so make sure you stick around for that!

If you're planning on coming to a game or are on the fence about going, let me give you one little push: admission to all games and the skills competition is absolutely FREE! Thanks to the generosity of Patrick and Carla Rae who are part of the tournament's incredible sponsors, they have covered the costs of any and all admission costs for the tournament so that all fans can attend and catch the fantastic hockey action all weekend no matter what game you want see!

At the end of the day, there are a pile of women who will be playing this weekend who are heading off to post-secondary institutions on both sides of the border. There will be even more whose performances this weekend and this season will set themselves up for the same opportunities. This is the tournament where all of Aerin Frankel, Jade Iginla, Sarah Potomak, Halli Krzyzaniak, Hannah Miller, and Logan Angers showed their skills before playing on international and professional stages. Perhaps the next potential stars of women's hockey will be showcasing their skills in west Winnipeg this weekend?

The Female World Sport School Challenge is always a weekend of incredible hockey in which UMFM is honoured to included. I have no doubt that Balmoral Hall School and the Balmoral Hall Blazers are going to host an incredible tournament, and I'm excited to watch and call some incredible games between the best teams that Manitoba has to offer. If you can make it down to the Hockey For All Centre, please come and watch. If you can't be at the rinks this weekend, we'll keep you up to speed on what's happening at the 2026 Female World Sport School Challenge on the UMFM Second Stream.

There usually isn't a lot to be excited about when it comes to hockey in late January, but the 2026 Female World Sport School Challenge has been circled on the UMFM calendar for a while. We're grateful for Balmoral Hall's invitation to be part of the event again this year, and we're proud to be broadcasting the 2026 Female World Sport School Challenge for all to hear! See you at the rink this weekend!
The 2026 Female World Sport School Challenge is happening from January 22-25 at the Hockey For All Centre in west Winnipeg, and the Balmoral Hall Blazers are hosting the event this year as it's going to a smaller, all-Manitoba format in their first year of hosting. As such, there will be bragging rights on the line for all nine teams at the event, and we'll hear if the host team's coach is ready for the challenge tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!
Aaron has been coaching in Manitoba at a high level for a number of years despite his youthful appearance, so we'll find out how he got into coaching, hear about some of his experiences, discuss the age-old boys-vs-girls question when it comes to coaching, and get the necessary information about Balmoral Hall's chances next week and into the CSSHL playoffs as we have some fun getting to know Aaron tonight! I'm sure he's going to have some good insight into the tournament as well, so we'll get all of that info out of him and more tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!
I know I've had the privilege of covering the World Deaf Ice Hockey Championship back in 2009 and there have been a handful of US-based teams who have played at the Female World Sport School Challenge, but I've never been involved in a series of games between a US-based team and a Canadian-based team. It appears that will be something I can cross off the ol' HBIC Bucket List because that will happen in March while accomplishing another first for both HBIC and UMFM! It is an honour that we were asked to participate in this event, so I'm clearing a weekend for the 2026, and possibly the first annual, Cross Border Classic!

UMFM has carried men's and women's hockey before, but this sledge hockey series will be a first for the radio station as the Manitoba Provincial Parahockey team will take the ice on March 6-8 to square off against the Minnesota Wild Sled Hockey team at the Hockey For All Centre in a three-game series! UMFM will be on-site to call all three games for anyone who wants to tune in from either side of the border as the UMFM Second Stream will bring listeners all the action!

Team Manitoba head coach McKenna Wild sent me information and a poster for the event, but I made a few adjustments to her work!

Having had McKenna in the UMFM studios before the holdiays, I know she's very excited for her team to take the ice against the Minnesota Wild Sled Team, so I expect Team Manitoba to be locked in by March. After watching their practice in early December, I can tell you Manitoba's athletes were flying all over the ice so I'm hoping that boundless energy is carried forward to the first weekend in March!

The license plates in the province may say "Friendly Manitoba", but I know there's a lot of pride on this Manitoba side when it comes to competing with the Minnesota Wild team. Of course, we're hoping to see lots of people at the games at the Hockey For All Centre (HFAC), and this would be a great way for everyone to come and see some of the best parahockey players from both Manitoba and Minnesota showing off their skills and abilities! If you haven't watched a parahockey game before in any manner, this is where you should be booking those days at the HFAC to come and watch the Cross Border Classic. Come and cheer on the Manitoba Express as they'll be looking for victories against the Wild!

You may have noticed that there are sponsorship opportunities available for this series, and Sledge Hockey Manitoba is looking for sponsors of all shapes and sizes! You don't need a six- or seven-digit marketing budget to help them make this weekend memorable, so get in touch with me using the "Contact Me" option at the top of the page and we'll put you in touch with the right people. Honestly, even a donation of time or products would help Sledge Hockey Manitoba in a major way, so if you want to help... please get in touch!

We know that one team in this province already has a healthy rivalry with a Minnesota Wild team, and it's time to establish another fun and friendly rivalry between two good hockey teams. Circle March 6-8 on your calendar, hop in the car, and come see the best parahockey players from Manitoba and Minnesota clash at the Hockey For All Centre for bragging rights in the 2026 Cross Border Classic!
There's a lot to discuss about Canada's finish, the overall attendance at the tournament, and why this tournament seems to be on the decline, but our hosts will take a shot at all of that tonight in a conversation that is sure to stir up some emotions and chatter among listeners. In short, it should be a good show with lively discussion once more tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!
After that conversation, our hosts look at the attendance problems that are becoming more apparent with every passing tournament, they have some Spengler Cup news, they discuss jerseys and capitalism, there's another outdoor game in 2027, and there was a player who passed away yesterday whose NHL record will likely never be touched. It should be a show filled with discussion and maybe a few fireworks as we dig into Canadian culture tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!

If you're more of an app person, we recommend you use the TuneIn app found on the App Store or Google Play Store.

If you have questions, you can email all show queries and comments to hockeyshow@umfm.com!
Tonight, Teebz and Jason talk bad systems, bad attendance, improving tournaments, bad jerseys, good jerseys, bad events, unbreakable records, and much more exclusively on 101.5 UMFM and on the UMFM.com web stream!
While the World Junior Championship continues, our two hosts don't make one mention of it tonight as they opt to focus on other stories that make for lively discussion. You may be thinking, "What else could they be discussing?" which is why you should be tuning in to hear the show. We have lots to go over from the hockey world, so kick back, settle in, and let us stir up the debate tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!
They also chat about Canada's disappointing finish at the Spengler Cup and why this seems to be happening more frequently, the success of the US Collegiate Selects team at the Spengler Cup, the madness surrounding the Allen Americans in two different stories, and how the ECHL is back to work with games played last night. Of course, we're happy to have listeners tuning in as we wish everyone a Happy New Year, but we'll tackle all those topics above tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!
There are two major tournaments starting tomorrow, so there will need to be some discussion on those tournaments and some of the details baked into them. There's also a very good chance that a North American hockey league will pause games tomorrow due to CBA negotiations falling apart, so our hosts have lots to talk about on this Christmas Day. We don't expect you to cut out of family dinner, but if you're waiting for it to hit the table, turn the radio on, tune in, and listen to some hockey chatter tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!
Following that, they focus on the finances of the World Junior Championship when it comes to where the money goes, the Spengler Cup rosters and players you may recognize from the other teams, and they talk about the potential ECHL strike that seems almost certain to begin tomorrow on Boxing Day. For a fun and festive day, there are some serious topics to be discussed, so make sure you settle in around the radio or internet device tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!

Tonight, Teebz and Jason chat song importance, big money, shared profits, European hockey, familiar names, failing negotiations, potential strikes, and much more exclusively on 101.5 UMFM and on the UMFM.com web stream!
Since then, it feels like I've been chasing my tail in trying to ensure plans are still on, coming up with contingency plans, and figuring out whether traveling to anywhere is worth the effort. The good news is that we figured it all out by 3pm CT today - yes, we cut it close! - but we'll be talking hockey tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!
With Teebz and Jason settled at their humble abodes, they discuss the 2028 World Junior Championship location that was named this week, the ridiculous saga into which the EIHL's Fife Flyers have gotten themselves, a similar situation with the EIHL's Sheffield Steelers, an interesting study was done on youth hockey helmets, and there was a massive trade in the NHL. All of these topics are examined tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!
There will be some good hockey talk as they have a pile of stuff to go over from the last four weeks of shows where guests appeared, so it will be more of a rapid fire show tonight as our hosts try to get everyone caught up on all the news locally, nationally, and internationally that may have been missed! It will feel like a sprint for 60 minutes, so make sure you're ready tonight for The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!
We'll take care to have meaningful discussions, but lingering chatter may not be an option tonight. Among the many topics tonight will be Teebz's visit to the Team Manitoba Sledge Hockey practice, Ryan Kesler's legal troubles, the St. Louis Blues signing an alleged predator, Carla MacLeod being in the biggest fight of her life, a special goal scored in Indianapolis at the end of November, the Olympics have an apparent arena problem, the IIHF imposes an Olympic-sized rule, and much more as we go through as many important and relevant hockey stories that need further discussion. It's going to be a fast-paced show with some hard discussions once again tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!
It's the perfect season for hockey around these parts, and we're going to talk to a guest tonight whose experiences have taken her from player to coach to advocate, and we'll hear about some of the challenges she faces in building provincial and national team programs. Did we mention she's a fantastically awesome person too? We'll chat about all of that stuff and much more with one of this country's best coaches when it comes to parahockey tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!
McKenna spends her workdays as a Recreational Facilitator for Manitoba Possible, but her nights and weekends see her on the ice as the head coach, director, and everything in between for the Manitoba provincial sledge hockey team. We'll chat about her time playing hockey, some of the challenges that the provincial team faces, some of the achievements they've made, growing the game both provincially and nationally, some upcoming events, and more! It should be a fantastic show as we learn about the provincial and national sledge hockey programs from McKenna Wild, head coach of Team Manitoba, tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!

Tonight, Teebz and Jason sit down with McKenna Wild to discuss her hockey career, switching over to sledge hockey, coaching, building teams, accessibility and advocacy, and much more exclusively on 101.5 UMFM and on the UMFM.com web stream!
