The Hockey Show - Episode 735

TeebzPR@gmail.com (Teebz) — Thu, 22 Oct 2026 14:30:00 -0500

The Hockey Show, Canada's only campus-produced radio show that strictly talks hockey, is back tonight with all the host seats filled as Sophie returns from conquering the universe, Jason checks in after adventuring this past week, and Teebz is... well, he's there too. All in all, it's going to be a busy show that will see the main story likely spark fires in listeners because it certainly does in our hosts. That story and a few other discussions are ready for banter tonight, so make sure you're ready for The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!

Tonight, Teebz, Jason, and Sophie will take a long look at the recent news coming out about sports betting in Canada and how it's affecting people in the two places where online sportsbooks are legal in Ontario and Alberta. There will be a lot of information and discussion on this, but the hosts will also discuss PWHL team names and the four unnamed teams who have their names, Brady Tkachuk being welcomed back to Ottawa, Connor Hellebuyck's treatment if or when he returns to Winnipeg, a unique set of games in the ECHL that should be explored by other leagues, something about events happening in Winnipeg this weekend, and anything else we can squeeze into the hour. It's an episode that rattles some cages and has lots of discussion as the three hosts get into all the topics tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!

If you live outside Winnipeg and want to listen, we have options! The UMFM website's streaming player works well if you want to listen online. We also recommend Radio Garden if you need an easy-to-use online stream. If you're more of an app person, we recommend you use the TuneIn app found on the App Store or Google Play Store.

The Hockey Show - Episode 734

TeebzPR@gmail.com (Teebz) — Thu, 15 Oct 2026 09:00:00 -0500

The Hockey Show, Canada's only campus-produced radio show that strictly talks hockey, is back with our two usual gunslingers as Sophie is already booked as she tries to take over the world. That leaves our two opinionated hosts to discuss a number of hockey topics from this past week, and they may even chat about something fun as well! What may that be, you ask? Well, you're going to have to find a seat, a radio or internet-connected device, and tune into The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!

Tonight, Teebz and Jason will look at what seems to be a "canary in the coalmine" situation when it comes to the Vegas Golden Knights' sellout streak ending. There are lots of reasons for it, but the comments on one blog along with comments collected by the author might surprise you when it comes to why Vegas saw a pile of empty seats last Thursday. Beyond that, our hosts will chat about a coach being dismissed, the continued misuse of public funds to help billionaires, a significant drop in fans in one market, and something big happening in the Winnipeg market near the end of October! It's going to be a busy show with lots of chatter, so make sure you're ready for the discussion on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!

If you live outside Winnipeg and want to listen, we have options! The UMFM website's streaming player works well if you want to listen online. HBIC's New Direction

TeebzPR@gmail.com (Teebz) — Fri, 9 Oct 2026 20:00:00 -0500

As we got closer to the number shown in the picture to the left, it's hard to believe that I've written this many articles here on HBIC. I often wonder how I've attracted 22 million hits on this page, but it seems like I've written a few articles that were read by people on this planet and that's not lost on me as I write this final daily entry. I'm one of the few independent bloggers who is still writing on a daily basis, but all good things do come to an end. HBIC will persist, but it will exist in a new format beyond today.

Blocking off free time to commit to writing HBIC was something that I always tried to do, and I'm grateful that people took the time to read the articles I've written to an extent that I cannot say "thank you" enough. I'm not here to do a top-ten list or anything, but I'm proud of the research and collaboration that went into articles like "Where The Shirts Have No Names", "Benny, Mick E., and Icy?", and other articles where good people like Rob Ullman and Fiona Quinn have given me story ideas. Not everything comes from this writer's noggin.

I certainly haven't avoided trouble when it came to what I wrote as I was threatened by a handful of organizations with some sort of legal action for what I wrote, but, thankfully, cooler heads prevailed and the threat of lawsuits remained as threats. The University of Lethbridge was none too pleased about my "Extinction Of The Pronghorns" article nor the "Hiding The Real Message" follow-up article, but they seemed to get over their anger. There were things said during negotations between the Manitoba Bisons and UMFM that ended a partnership in "The Art Of Negotiation?", and The Hockey Show and UMFM were threatened with a lawsuit if we reported about a major incident that happened on campus that we investigated.

Speaking of The Hockey Show, that will continue and I'll still post show previews here on HBIC as we push forward with some fun radio opportunities. Teebz's Book Club will take advantage of having more time when it comes to reading hockey literature, and there are a ton of books that I want to cross off the "To Read" list. More than anything, though, I want to get out to rinks more often and watch hockey. I honestly don't care if it's TimBits hockey or NHL hockey, live hockey is certainly better when one is watching in the arena.

On that note, expect us to have a lot of fun calling games at the Female World Sport School Challenge this November, we'll get out to call a handful of sledge hockey games alongside the great people from Sledge Hockey Manitoba, and we'll work with the Balmoral Hall Blazers to schedule a few broadcasts of their games as well. We're always looking for fun games and events to call, so feel free to reach out if you want UMFM at your event! We'll try to make it happen!

I want to be clear: HBIC isn't going away. There just won't be daily posts any longer. I'll still have a voice on here when it comes to covering big stories, looking at hockey history, and posting fun articles like "Musicians in Jerseys", but I want to use my time more effectively for me. Besides, there are 7000 articles on this site, and I don't know if anyone has read them all. For all the ones you have read, though, thank you. You made the last two decades worth it.

This isn't good-bye as much as it is "see you soon". Whenever that is.

Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!

The Hockey Show, Canada's only campus-produced radio show that strictly talks hockey, is back in the UMFM studio tonight as we get set for another big show. Assuming we get through that discussion, we'll also chat about something that hasn't happened for nearly forty years, the new NHL equipment rules and Trevor Zegras' tuck, the new NHL Board of Governors leadership, an NHL player with some artistic talent, and how CBC can make the PWHL better by doing what it always did best. The Hockey Show - Episode 729

TeebzPR@gmail.com (Teebz) — Thu, 10 Sep 2026 13:00:00 -0500

The Hockey Show, Canada's only campus-produced radio show that strictly talks hockey, remains out of the studio for another week, albeit for an entirely different reason. We had fun at the Hockey For All Centre last week as we chatted with Winnipeg Ice head coach Eugene Kaminsky, and this week sees us chatting with another incredible hockey mind and awesome person as we tackle a subject most seem to avoid! Who did we chat with and what's the subject? All that is answered tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!

Tonight, Teebz and Jason chat with author Daniel Gawthrop about his new book, Cutting Edge: Hockey as Queer Culture, and all of the topics he covered while getting his thoughts and a better understanding from his experiences about how the hockey world can be better place for everyone. They look at a very famous, historical hockey player whose past seems to indicate that he was the first gay hockey superstar, chat about making the game better for the LGBTQ+ community and for kids so that more people can be included in the "hockey is for everyone" statement, and discuss some of the ongoing realities that all of Daniel, the Cutting Edges Hockey team and association, and hockey in general faces with respect to making everyone feel welcome. It was an incredible chat with Daniel that gave Teebs and Jason new perspectives, and we need to thank Daniel for being so open and honest with us! Thanks again, Daniel!

On top of that, the interview ran for about 75 minutes, meaning that we had to cut some topics out of the interview just to fit into the time window, but Daniel kept giving us such interesting thoughts that it was hard not learn more from him! We'll post an hour of the chat tonight in giving you all of the best parts of the interview, so open your mind and tune into The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!

TeebzPR@gmail.com (Teebz) — Thu, 3 Sep 2026 13:00:00 -0500

The Hockey Show, Canada's only campus-produced radio show that strictly talks hockey, has escaped! Our hosts will be out in the community tonight as they make a trip down to the Hockey For All Centre in west Winnipeg to check out an intriguing matchup between the ACHA's University of Jamestown Jimmies and the MFHL's Winnipeg Ice! As far as we can tell, this will be the Ice's first dance with a university team, so this could be fun as the hosts will look for interviews post-game in between talking about hockey! It's the first show out of the studios in a while, so join us down at the Hockey For All Centre for the game and the The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!

Some will say the image to the left is an accurate description of our two hosts, but Teebz and Jason will make their way down to the Hockey For All Centre where they'll set up the remote gear and chat about the ongoing insanity at Rogers Communications with respect to Elliotte Friedman and Kevin Bieksa potentially being gone from their broadcasts. They'll also talk about the recent shutdown of Victory+ and how the broadcasting landscape has changed in hockey. They'll also update everyone on the score in the game between the Jimmies and Ice, and they'll see if they can flag down a few players and/or coaches for an interview on the show tonight. It's always fun heading out to a rink for a live show where we can meet talented people, so make sure you're tuned into The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!

A Short Road Trip

TeebzPR@gmail.com (Teebz) — Sun, 30 Aug 2026 21:00:00 -0500

I won't be doing much on the hockey front today thanks to being in a vehicle for eight hours, but that's life when it comes to work responsibilities. I have a scheduled visit with a branch I never get to see enough, so I'll be working the next few days out of town as I try to get all of their technological issues solved. That being said, I felt like I was an F-Zero racer from the classic SNES game while driving in my new vehicle with all its bells and whistles, so the drive today was pretty comfortable. Like any drive, though, there are some people who don't seem to understand the basic rules of the road, but those people were thankfully few and far between. Needless to say, I arrived at my destination as planned, and the ride was smooth-sailing for the majority of the concrete journey.

What made the second half of the journey that much more enjoyable is that I was able to tune into the local professional baseball radio broadcast as I drove thanks to the magic of cell phones and the internet. Despite being some four hours away from the ballpark, I was able to tune in and hear the call clearly thanks to the station's internet broadcast. As such, I didn't miss a pitch despite being a considerable distance from the station's broadcasting range.

This isn't any sort of new revelation, you're saying, and I completely understand that. However, it does bring to light the importance of radio broadcasts when it comes to professional sports teams as there's no way I could tune into the video broadcast while driving. Normally, I would watch the game if I wasn't working at the ballpark, but today's excursion to a far-off location made that impossible.

With the improvements in technology and advancements made to stream audio better, it doesn't matter where you in the world now when it comes to listening to your favorite team's radio broadcast. Radio has always been free outside of satellite radio, and most teams have opted to have a local station broadcast its games to its immediate market so its fanbase can listen whenever they're playing.

That's a smart decision for people who may be bustling around cities and towns where the broadcast signal reaches, but it made it hard for people to listen before streaming audio on the internet became a thing. Today, there are no limits when listening from faraway places, and my example today is an important reason why hockey teams still need radio: they can reach ANY market with that broadcast!

With Rogers deciding to scrap their sports radio stations in both Vancouver and Calgary, there was an immediate backlash towards Rogers before the Flames signed a deal with Corus-owned QR Calgary 770AM and the Canucks moved to Rogers-owned KiSS Throwbacks at 104.9 FM. Those broadcasts will still allow fans to hear their favorite teams, but the fact that Rogers continues to disrupt something that was working well over a profit statement held by shareholders is something I'll never understand. Radio is a proven and valuable asset!

Had radio died with the rise of the internet as some predicted, there would have been no way for me to have listened to the game pitch-by-pitch as I did today. There's likely no way that a lot of sports fans who have moved outside the broadcast range of their favorite team's radio signal would be able to consume that content. Yet not one person to whom I have spoken about this very topic has ever said, "Having a radio broadcast of that game is a stupid idea."

I won't lie in telling you that I listen to games from all over the place in the winter when I'm driving. I can usually be found listening to a Fort Wayne Komets game or a Pittsburgh Penguins game - two teams whose schedules rarely cross with Winnipeg - as I'm driving around on a winter's evening, and the end result is that I miss nothing from those games by tuning in via streaming audio. It's an awesome thing to be able to catch broadcasts from anywhere, and I'm grateful that I'm able to do so. As a driver, I respect the power of radio.

I need to go through and update some of the links on these, but, if you want to listen to your favorite hockey team while travelling, there are resources right here on HBIC for that. I have a whole page dedicated to NHL teams' radio broadcasts, another for AHL teams' broadcasts, and a third for ECHL teams' broadcasts. Find your team(s), save their radio links, and you're set for in-vehicle hockey broadcasts from your favorite teams! How awesome is that?

If you needed a reason as to why I love radio, it's this reason. Yes, it's an outlet for a lot of hockey chatter between Jason and I, but the fact that we can reach ears around the globe is one of the main reasons I love it. When Canada West fans crashed the server in 2018 during the Canada West Final between Saskatchewan and Manitoba by tuning in from all over the planet, that was a watershed moment for me. I knew we were reaching people with our goofy broadcasts, but people were also responding by tuning in to hear us call games.

Whether it was grandparents in Florida who could listen for free or Albertans listening while tweeting at us, we had expanded UMFM's borders from a campus radio station to something much bigger. The flip side, though, was that people were able to tune in and hear the game in its entirety for free from two guys who loved calling the game, had a passion for women's hockey and the players on the ice, and understood that many fans wanted inexpensive coverage.

Listening to the baseball game as I drove gave me a lot to think about when it came to Rogers' recent decisions, and it's renewed my passion for having radio as a vital and important medium for sports. My hope is that you feel the same about your radio broadcasts, and I'd urge you to support your local radio station that broadcasts your favorite team(s), especially if you live outside their broadcast map.

It's still free and it's still totally accessible as it should be. All you need is a radio or an internet-connected device to tune in!

Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!

The Hockey Show, Canada's only campus-produced radio show that strictly talks hockey, is back in the confines of the UMFM studios for another show this evening, but we won't be joined by Montreal Victoire defender Kati Tabin as she's far too busy to make an appearance. If you're attending her camp, have a great time, but we'll focus on some bigger stories tonight as the world of hockey has some good, some not-so-good, and some absolute treachery happening in it over the last week. There's a pile of stuff to chat about this evening, so settle in for another examination of the game and all its connections on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!

They won't be looking for a dolphin like the pet detective shown, but Teebz and Jason will look at the newest gambling-trend-turned-investment-tool with which the financial world is hoping to capitalize. Beyond that madness, they'll discuss Rogers canning the HNiC Punjabi broadcasts, the OHL cracking down on fighting again, Jeff Skinner's new home, Fort Wayne's incredible jerseys, a pro ball player, championships in three leagues, there's finally a name and logo for one team, and whatever else comes across the desk at our hosts. There's lots to discuss tonight on the show, so settle in for an hour of hockey opinions and thoughts on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!

Reading The Manual

TeebzPR@gmail.com (Teebz) — Tue, 18 Aug 2026 20:00:00 -0500

For the last couple of weeks, I've been spending a lot of time reading about, researching, and narrowing down my options for a new HBIC mobile, and my choice of the vehicle you see to the left is a good one! Jokes aside, I didn't buy that car, but I did take possession of a new vehicle today so anyone who knew my old vehicle will likely need to get used to this new one parked in my driveway. Being that I like to know everything about expensive purchases I make, I'm going to spend the evening reading the manuals that came with the vehicle.

No, I'm not listing what I purchased here, but I assure you that this blog contributed nothing to the purchase. What I can tell you, though, is that there is more technology in this car than I've ever had in a vehicle, so I need to figure out what everything does, how it all connects through my phone, and whether or not satellite radio is necessary in this new vehicle. I'm leaning towards no, but we'll see.

I've listened to the NHL Network radio channel they have on SiriusXM and I'm often wondering why I'm listening. There isn't a show on there that is "must-hear radio", so that's one reason I may scrap the subscription. Add in the fact that Howard Stern is dropping to one show per week according to a Page Six report, the playlists for the music stations rarely change, and I have no need for Pitbull's channel, Kelly Clarkson's channel, The Beatles' channel, Alex Cooper's music, Bruce Springsteen's channel, Pearl Jam's channel, the Grateful Dead channel, and so on. No, I'm not staying for Andy Cohen either.

I might show my age here, but I would load up my iPod Nano with all my favorite music and listen to it for hours on road trips. Unless there was something specific on satellite radio that I wanted to hear, there really wasn't a need to have it. I'll admit that I've enjoyed the Howard Stern Show over the years and used it to the listen to the Blue Jays' run to the World Series last season when I was travelling for work, but more commercials on channels and less and less variation is making it hard to justify the cost of satellite radio at this point.

I'll evaluate thst decision moving forward, but, being that the hockey stories are few and far between right now, I'm going to spend this evening getting smarter about all this connected technology so I can have the full experience with my vehicle. According to the first few pages that I've read, Apple's Siri might be useful if it's integrated with the car's technology! See? I learned something already!

Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!

Another Dumb Idea

TeebzPR@gmail.com (Teebz) — Wed, 29 Jul 2026 21:30:00 -0500

As a guy who watched a hockey team make the inexplicable decision to simply walk away from a radio contract that had brought the team some popularity in its market, it was hard to understand what the Columbus Blue Jackets were trying to achieve by not renewing the contract of radio play-by-play broadcaster Bob McElligott. McElligott had 17 years of experience calling games on the radio, and he was a trusted voice for Blue Jackets fans. Starting this season, that voice will be absent as the team looks to simulcast its TV broadcast on the radio which may lead to no radio in the future.

As per the announcement today, "all Blue Jackets game broadcasts will be simulcast across television and radio platforms, allowing fans to experience the same live game coverage whether watching on television or listening on the radio". Steve Mears and Jody Shelley will be calling the action on both mediums now, but this idea seems to forget that these two mediums are significantly different in how the actual broadcasts sound. TV is not radio, so this could go poorly.

As you likely know from watching hockey on TV, the action on the TV doesn't always have to be described because you, as the viewer, can see it. It's part of the reason why every ticket to a game doesn't come with a guy who sits besides you and describes the action. You're able to process what's happening on the ice because you can see it, and the TV broadcast will call the play and fill in the analysis gaps.

You don't get that same benefit with radio because there is no visual component. The audio hardly lends itself to knowing what's happening on the ice, so the radio play-by-play person does a lot more talking to describe what's happening on the ice at all times. There's a signficant difference in how the game sounds when there are big gaps between plays called on radio whereas TV can handle that with its visuals. That's why TV-to-radio simulcasts don't work.

If the Columbus Blue Jackets are letting Bob McElligott as a cost-cutting move, there are likely hundreds of other things they could have done to save a few bucks because there is no way their product will sound better on the radio by using the TV broadcast as its play-by-play. No longer will be there be different analysis done by different people because the single broadcast removes those other voices who bring a different perspective and different experiences to the game. Losing those voices doesn't make the game better.

My hope is that Bob McElligott gets picked up by another team because he was very good at his job. For the handful of games that I heard him call, he was always professional, sounded well-prepared, and called the game with passion. Wherever he lands, he'll bring those traits to his new job, but I really hope he finds his way back to a hockey broadcast booth. His talents make the game sound great!

Oscar Wilde wrote in The Picture of Dorian Gray, "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." It appears that the Columbus Blue Jackets are fully prepared to test that famous quotation this season.

Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!

The Hockey Show - Episode 716

TeebzPR@gmail.com (Teebz) — Thu, 11 Jun 2026 09:00:00 -0500

The Hockey Show, Canada's only campus-produced radio show that strictly talks hockey, is operating a little shorthanded today as Jason will join us from Montreal after flying out for the Scintillation conference! He'll be a busy man on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday so we'll get him ready to chat by having him join by phone once he's settled in the "Paris of North America". We have some interesting stories to go over tonight, and we may even squeeze in an exit interview if everything works out in our favour! Will that happen? You'll have to find out tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!

Tonight on the program, Teebz and Jason will look to have Travis (Montreal) on for his exit interview as we get closer to the NHL season ending. Once we get through that fun, our hosts will take a look at the Dallas Stars' arena situation and how they're doing things down in Texas, they'll discuss the USHL expansion a little more, look into the Baton Rouge Zydeco who have all sorts of problems, and we'll address the elephant in the room when it comes to the Edmonton Oilers. It should be a solid show with some strong opinions and thoughts on these topics, so clear your evening schedule for hockey talk tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!

The Hockey Show, Canada's only campus-produced radio show that strictly talks hockey, is doing a little clean-up tonight as there are a pile of stories that we said we'd tackle on previous shows and never got around to discussing. With hockey news seemingly being hot off the presses each week, things change quickly when deciding what topics to cover. Add in the fun we've had meeting and chatting with some of the great contestants on Survivor: NHL Playoffs and it makes some of the stories far less important. However, they still need to be discussed at some point, so our hosts will engage in a little housekeeping tonight and get all of these random stories off the books! We're going all over the place with stories tonight on The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT!

Tonight, Teebz and Jason will flip a coin over who sends Buffalo home after scheduling conflicts with Fiona prevented us from chatting with her. Tyler will drop in for an exit inverview for the Colorado Avalanche. Travis is off on an adventure, so he gets to skip Montreal's exit interview tonight, but he's clearing his schedule for next week. After those get done, our hosts will begin the housekeeping with a discussion about Hockey Canada's women's program making changes, an old ECHL team is new again, a discussion on the Hamilton Hammers, the USHL expanding, the Dallas Stars trying to bully their way to a new arena, the 2026 Spengler Cup schedule, and anything else we may have missed from our notes over the past few weeks. It's another busy show with lots to discuss, so lock in tonight for The Hockey Show at 5:30pm CT on one of 101.5 FM, Channel 718 on MTS TV, or via UMFM.com!
