In 1925, when he borrowed $500 from a friend to swing the purchase of a small retail store in Quincy Massachusetts; the primary feature of patent medicine stores in the 1920's was a soda fountain for mixing "medicinal" tonics and flavored syrups with carbonated water. Howard Johnson's soda fountain also served soft drinks concocted from flavored syrups, but his real love was ice cream. His store sold three flavors-vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry.

Experimenting with a hand-cranked freezer in the basement of the stor, Johnson came up with his own line of ice cream which, within years, made his soda fountain the most popular eatery in town. Adding hamburgers, hot dogs, and sandwiches to the menu, he converted the store into the world's first Howard Johnson's restaurant. In 1929, he opened another outlet with a deversified menu. But with the Great Depression, his plans for bold expansion in the food-service trade began to fode.

In 1935, Johnson conviced the owner of a restaurant in nearby Cape Cod to use the Howard Johnson name in return for a fee and an agreement to buy food and supplies from johnson.

Johnson had franchised 400 restaurants by 1954, when he entered the lodging trade franchising his first motor lodge in Savannah, Georgia.

In 1959, Johnson handed over the reins of his small business empire to his son, Howard Brennan Johnson, who overwaw the chain's operations until 1980 when the company was sold to British multinational, Imperial Group. The Hohnson family's company owned restaurants which are currently operated by Marriott Corporation, under "The Bob's Boy" trademark. The Howard Johnson lodging chain is franchised by Prime Motor Inns.

Hilton attended St. Michael's College and new Mexico School of Menes. he graduated in 1909. As a youth he met late-night trains stopping in San Antonio and escorted passengers to his guests. The room rate was a dollar per night, including meals.

Following a short period in business with his father; the 25-year-old Conrad went to work as a cashier in the New Mexico State Bank in San Antonio and eventually became the President of the bank. He served as a second lieutenant in World WarI.

In 1919, Hilton went to Cisco, with a intention of buying a bank. Instead, he ended up buying a hotel, the Mobley, which became the cornerstone of the Hilton hotel empire. In 1925, he set out to build a new hotel in Dallas, but ran out of money before construction was completed. When the project was finished, Hilton operated the establishment under a lease contract.

When the Depression struck, he had already acquired a modest chain of eight hotels in the Southwest. In a perion whin more than 80 percent of the nation's hotels went into bankruptcy, Hilton managed to hold on to five of his hotels by using profits from his oil lease investments.

In1939, Hilton began building new hotels, while setting out to acquire the most famous examples of America's "Golden Age of Hotels." In 1942 he acquired the Town House in Los Angelse and, a year later; the Roosevelt and Plaza hotels in New York City. He achieved his life long ambition of owning the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City.

In1946, he organized his chain of lodging establishments as the Hilton Hotel Corporation and in the succeeding years built luxury hotels around the world under the Hilton name. In 1954, he acquired controlling enterest of his primary management reins to his son, Barron Hilton, in1966, staying on as chairman of the board.

Conard Hilton's autobiography, "Be My Guest", was published in 1957. Wilson grew up during the Great Depression and was forced to leave high school; when his widowed mother lost her job. The enterprising youth acquired a popcorn vending machine on installments and rented space in the lobby of a local theatre. His business extended and rewarded him with good profit. Wilson reinvested his profits in a variety of vending machines, eventually acquiring a house, a jukebox distributorship and several theatres of his own.

After serving in the Air Transport Command during World War II, Wilson failed with a soft drink contract, before finally succeeding in the construction trade. In 1951, driving with his family on vacation from Tennessee to Washington D.C., he was displeased at his inability to find even a single motor inn with good sanitation and comfortable accommodation suitable for a vacationing family. Soon afterward, Wilson opened his own hotel outside Memphis. Catering to vacationing families, Wilson called his new establishment the Holiday Inn, after 1942.

In sharp contrast to other motor inns of the early 1950's the Holiday Inn included ample parking, televisions, phones, a swimming pool for guests and soft drink dispensers. Over the next few years, Wilson built three more hotels and, with an entrepreneur named Wallace Johnson, began franchising Holiday Inns a national level.

By 1959, the chain boasted a hundred hotels, most owned by doctors, lawyers and other financially capable investors. Wilson retired as chief executive in the franchise chain in 1979, after suffering a mild heart attack. Holiday Inns is still the world's largest lodging organization and one of the most recognizable franchise trademarks. It is estimated that 90% of the nation's travelers spend at least one night in Holiday Inn.
