At times, I’ve realized
that I’m not getting any younger. I have to leave the matchbox behind. I’ve
come to think choosing the sapling of significance over the seedling of youth. This
year, I’ll be turning my quarter-life. On a personal level, this year is still
characterized as a walkway to a career goal. I’m not saying that I’m up for
this rat race. On a positive note, I’m pursuing my master’s degree because of
my passion for learning. That is, I’m still gradually working on my way towards
my pursuit of significance. I’m very lucky that I’ve come this far.

Apparently, there’s
always a reason to be grateful for. There’s yet no initial plan on how I’ll be
going to celebrate my 25th birthday this July 29th. But, one thing
is for sure is that I have to thank Him for sparing me this wonderful life I’m
living for. Thank You, Oh God, for all the blessings which have filled the
lapses of my humanity. With gladness, I’m also grateful, Dear Lord, for the
adversities You laid down the road. They made me feel so much better each day
after getting them over.

Getting old is an
indelible ink that always haunts the midlife—or quarter-life to the
extent—scenarios. It’s a sort of a last string which a person has to strum
regardless of how he bitterly feels about its sound resonated. I’ve come to the
point believing that age is just a number. But, I don’t want to make further
cover ups just to show how Death becomes so unwelcome by the time he shall
have knocked at my doors in his own time. In my age, I’m no longer at ease.

I’ve been torn by my
silly thoughts and wild imaginations. Things, perhaps, fall apart, even if how
my “All is well” outlook in life works in its own ways. What’s clear to me now
is that I have to devour my youth I once wasted. What the hell is the meaning
of this urge to go to places I’ve never been to? To think that traveling around
is my only way to keep things fall into place and to discover such spot in this
world to call my own.

Hey, fellas! I’m
turning 25. And, I’m proud to say that I’ve come this far. Am I good enough? Am
I following the path my destiny keeps on telling me? How far should I keep
going the extra mile? How long does it take for me to live in order to look for
teachable moments? Is all worth living for?

“The answer, my friend”
Bob Dylan declared, “is blowing in the wind. It is blowing in the wind.” But
for me, the answer is not blowing in the wind. It is being a star guiding me to
keep moving forward. It is somewhat like a star which led the three kings to
find the newly-born Jesus in Bethlehem.

Dusty roads. Noise
pollution resonating. People working. An exhausting day. That’s what I observed
in the cityscapes before I rewarded my self for an island adventure.

A day after the
official end of the school year, I, together with my outdoor adventurist
colleagues, was off to Bucas Grande Island for an island hopping. It seemed
more of a self-treat than a summer getaway. After such exhausting school year,
it was such a perfect time to reward ourselves. And, to engage in nature as a
reward was really fun.

There was this
magical appeal within me the time I set foot to the boat from our jump off
point in Hayanggabon, Claver bound to Sohoton Cove in Bucas Grande Island. I’ve
had this natural phobia riding in a boat in vast seawater. The idea of a
matchbox floating in a wide and deep ocean tattooed on my mind. And, a
half-hour perching in the seawater was like a way to a dungeon. But at least,
the feeling of excitement and the anticipation of a great island experience waiting
ahead of us temporarily eased the tension inside me.

Lush islands. Cupcake-like
islets. Pristine beaches. Blue waters. Cool see breeze. Welcoming folks. Mouth-watering
seafood. Magical inland waters. Challenging trails. Colorful corals underneath.
These are the nature wonders seen by my naked eyes. Momentarily, it’s as if I
were in Wonderland.

I caught myself
amazed by these magical creations of Mother Nature—God’s masterpieces on that
note. It’s the bizarre Sohoton Cove which captured something different on me. It’s,
indeed, Bucas Grande’s most precious jewel. That feeling when I became
speechless seeing the beautifully-carved limestones and other rock formations,
serene waters, the nature-fashioned stalactites and stalagmites.

Perhaps, the most
challenging part of that island adventure was that when we had a trail in a
small cave, immersed ourselves with bats taking rests in the canopy of
beautiful stalactites, and ended up taking a plunge into the cool waters. After
that interesting jump from a cliff off for a plunge, fear of heights and second
thoughts were all paid off. It’s replaced with a big smile painted from
overcoming such challenge.

As the day came to a
close, we let all our connections to and engagements in nature go to our
treasure chest of fond memories as we took rest in native cottages by the
tranquil beach facing the mining hub of Taganito in the northeastern tip of
Mindanao.

We left the place
the following day, but the magical trails printed on our memories have continued
to scribble pages of amazement. I know that a day is not enough to discover all
the hidden jewels of Sohoton Cove. But, I sincerely thank God for giving us the
opportunity being connected to and engaged in in His wonderful creations in
such a way.

Serenity. Enchantment.
Peace of mind. That’s what I brought with me upon arriving in the sprawling
metropolis of Surigao. At the end of the day, I didn’t mind what I observed
about the cityscapes prior to our island hopping. For I believe that, it’s how
I look at things that really matters. And, it really does.

body is like a temple. It is the core of all our senses. It is a gift endowed
by God to us as a symbol of His generosity and divine might. God is the main
source of power for our body to function in its own ways.

Human beings as we are, we seem to forget the value of this divine present by disregarding
the fact that it is just lent to us. As a lender, we have to see to it that we
have to give extra care in preserving the value of this gift.

However,
many become engrossed in gratifying their human desires at the expense of their
own temple. Many puff up cigars as a stress relief. They seem to welcome
nicotine gradually narrowing down their life span. Some dig in food not minding
the threats of heart attack, stroke, hypertension, and other cardiovascular
diseases. A number of workaholics bury their heads before the computer monitor
and end up to skipping meals, among others. There are many factors to look
into, but the common denominator is that, in a way, they forget the undefined
price tag of their body.

This
blog entry has nothing to do with such didactic reminder from a non-life coach
like me. It’s just that we have to be responsible enough in doing our part to
look after our body and to preserve our human form. Valuing what God has given
to us is a noble responsibility we have to learn by the heart. It is a gesture
of showing respect to our Maker, and paying tribute to His masterpiece.

That
is, we must come to think of that we’re not the owner of this wonderful temple
entrusted to us. Our role, therefore, is to nurture such gift through any possible means
we can.

Thus,
keep your body in shape. Shape up. Stretch your muscles as you do to your nerves
and tissues. Sweat it out. Tone down your vices, or better to forget them. We’re
given less than 80 to 100 years to do our part in nurturing such endowment. If
we hit it right, that life span is already enough.

TEN YEARS

Ten years. For all these years, the Surigao State College of Technology's Sadjao Surigao Dance Theater has been delivering exquisite performances and culture-oriented acts. Its latest offer for Surigaonon theater lovers was its very own concert, Diyes, as the culminating activity and the highlight of the Physical Education Festival and National Arts Month.

Diyes, as the word reveals, is a special tribute for the Sadjao Surigao Dance Theater's significant contributions in promoting cultural awareness, valuing Surigao's historical soil and contributing to the city's brand management locally and abroad.

The showcase of talents among SSSCTian performing artists was a way of giving it back to the 'madlang people' for the never-ending support and acceptance. The group is, in a way or another, very thankful for subscribing to their meaningful and character-defining performances.

On the show itself, I have to give a score of 9.5 out of 10. The performers gave out their very best in portraying realities about life through melodic and harmonious patterns, plus the commendable acting performances. The show somehow left the audience bewitched by such dose of realities seen before their very eyes. At the end of the show, as I heard some feedbacks, many had made it real to drive home the message. And, as far as my synapses and dendrites are concerned, I observed that people seemed to want for more after the curtain call.

In my point of view, to sum up the show, it simply called for unity amidst diversity. Whoever we are, whatever what we have achieved, whatever we believe in, there is unity attached to ourselves. And, that's what we have to celebrate.

The Sadjao Surigao Dance Theater has made extraordinary stories for a decade. My sincere commendation to those who have worked hard behind our eyes can see to make the group a training ground for future total performing artists. To those people who have made the show possible, thank you so much for such reality-biting and life-changing acts and performances. Recognition and frustration have come and gone by storms. But, the group still stands firm and remains resilient.

Diyes has certainly opened possibilities that, indeed, there is life in moving to the rhythm of music. It's a cause for celebration.

BEFORE OUR VERY EYES

calling is to truly see ourselves in the image of other people and to reveal something
about ourselves in places significant to us. And, one effective way to do that
is to practice the art of observing until it becomes our second nature to watch
and to learn something about ourselves in front of others.

For instance, when we see
someone effectively performs on stage and perfectly conveys the message through acting, it somehow motivates us to see ourselves on that performer’s shoes. It’s
as if we also like to take ourselves for a try in an acting performance. And,
that’s the power of keen observation. It inexplicably drives us to seeing the
reality beyond our naked eyes can see.

The most challenging part in practicing
the art of keen observation is to filter what we observe. As a keen observer, we should know the difference between what is essential and what is not, universal
right from relative wrong, among others. People always ask, “Why did he
behave like that?” “Why did he do that?” The answer is, “Listen up. Shut up.
Observe. Verify.” Many advantages exist in
observing. In fact, we can discover the person more at our own means, explore places
in our own compass, verify situations considered to be vital in seeking for
knowledge and truth.

From above, our Earth looks like
a huge brilliant blue ball. Our universe is so vast and mysterious extending to
the edge of nowhere. As observers who are beginning to love the act, we are always surprised
how tiny we really are. But at least, through observation, we will somehow know fraction of who we really are, and we will discover what we all have at the end of each day.

Learning the art of keen
observation is not measured “by the numbers.” It’s not how many things we have
discovered firsthand. It’s not how many places we have become familiar about.
It’s not how many people we have skinned out. At the end of the day, the
ultimate benefit of being a keen observer is to know exactly who we are and to
discover where our spot in this world may be.

Learning how to see wonders and
realities everyday is self-fulfilling. By observing, we will be able to see
larger amounts of details about life and death—in the context of dullness,
negative vibes, sadness, stagnation, among others.

Keep observing. It’s our first
step to learn. It’s fun to observe life. It’s true that the more we know, the
more that we don’t know. That is, we have to take a step back a moment from our scope
and realize that we have all the opportunities in this world to add something to our prior
knowledge and to enjoy life in general. We have to cultivate an interest in finding out more about everything
around us. We just have to be patient to wait for a good answer.

Above all, Have Fun!

SILENT HERO

I love my father. I really
love him so much.

My father is just a typical subsistence farmer.
He is not a teacher by profession, but he is a book
himself. He has taught me to appreciate life wherever my feet would take me
away. My father simply reminds me of redemption and vindication.

Way back in elementary years,
I could still vividly reminisce how my father used to wake me up every day to
pray with him. I really lap up his persistence in reciting the holy rosary. I
have not known somebody else who is so persistent in praying other than him.

Here came the
character-defining moment of my well-being. My father didn’t bother to attend
my elementary graduation. Despite such milestone, he just spent
this precious time of mine plowing in the farm. I was clueless his reason of
not showing up such momentous affair. I was then an honor graduate that any
parents would have to be proud of. During the ceremony, it really hurt when all
of the graduates hugged and thanked to their parents along with music of
gratitude. I held back my tears, but I cried inside.

My father was not fond of attending
PTA meetings and parent-teachers conferences. It took me a long time to
appreciate his presence in my high school graduation. I was quite flattered
when he donned me my medals off the stage. In time, I seemed to appreciate him
by such gesture.

Since my father could not
able to send me to college, I decided to work in a department store for my plan
of pursuing college. With God’s guidance, I was able to enroll in Education the
following year. Being away from my father and other siblings was never that
easy. I was fighting homesickness. But, I overcome it through time. Through the
help of my other siblings, I earned Education degree with flying colors. It
took me some times celebrating
the state of my euphoria. Finally, my father’s presence and
moral support during my college graduation was his best present I have had ever
received. My father’s gesture of donning to me my medals was really such a
significant turning point of my well-being.

My father doesn’t have the
luxuries in the world, but he has provided me with everything through his
persistent prayers which, as it turned out, have worked in mysterious ways.
This pushes me to achieve something I want in life. He is my great white hope,
my ultimate role model. For in the end, the ultimate reason why I pursued
college is to show appreciation on how he has brought us up. This is
my gesture of giving it back.

What all we’ve been through
pays off. Since my mother’s demise when I was still in second grade, my father
has become an epitome to keep moving forward. My father remains more than a
priest, a monk, a doctor, a
counselor, a mentor, a book, and so on.

That is, I love my father.
After all, he is my life’s silent hero. For if it wasn’t for him, I would never
be who I am today.

For the Roman Catholics, today is Ash
Wednesday. This day, many faithful Catholics flocked to the church for that
smudging of ashes in their forehead. Way back from the first clear evidence of
Ash Wednesday around 960 AD, this tradition signals the beginning of the Lenten
season in the liturgical calendar.

The popularity of smudging our
forehead with ashes during Ash Wednesday seems so evident in the Philippines,
being the only Catholic country in Asia.

In the New Testament, Jesus refers to
the use of ashes as a sign of repentance. That is, as the season of Lent
begins, we have to submit ourselves to God and do the act of repentance. We are
all humans. We are all vulnerable to sins. We all have sins. But, the most
important thing there is that we have all the chances to ask for forgiveness
while we are still alive. God is our merciful Father. So, it is impossible for
Him not to lend His ears for our sincere apologies.

On a lighter note, today seems the day
made for seeing old good friends. It is queer to think how this day happened
such way. I happened to see some of my old friends in Surigao Education Center,
to wit: Tiyan, Albot, Butitay, Lady Gaga, Maam Edith, Teacher Rey, Teacher
Jubie Pongcol, that professor in chemistry, and a parent of a Montessori pupil
two years ago.

It shows how people, in this little
city of Surigao in the northeastern tip of Mindanao, become so close to each
other. That is, seeing my old friends made this day a bit special to me. Perhaps,
God just showed me the sign to ask for forgiveness for all my shortcomings
against my old friends (I know there is…hehe). On that note, from the innermost
part of my heart, I do ask for forgiveness. Please accept my sincere apologies.
And, I know that I’m not all alone here. Many people who have done something
which hurt others may find this day the perfect time to ask for sorry. I know
that some seem to find sorry as the hardest word. But, just keep it a try. Once
you are used to saying it sincerely, it’s not anymore hard for you to say so
all over and over again.

After all, forgiveness always finds
its way to someone’s heart. Once it has found its place, it acquires its own citizenship.
Gradually, it softens the hard spot of someone’s heart, and it resides inside
the heart in its very own time.

Oh well, how lucky I am being
lightened up by this smudging of ashes in my forehead. By joining such liturgical
tradition, I saw forgiveness in the different light. By wearing that smudge
faithfully all day long, I know that I carry Jesus Christ with me. I carry Him
here in my heart.

LOVE, PASSION, ETC.

Before I begin, I want to share with you this wonderful sky at high noon I captured after I'd met a high school couple.

When there is love,
there is passion.

There was nothing
grand happened to me on Valentine’s Day. It was just a typical day for me,
except that something unexpected came out unnoticed. And, I would not anymore
lay down the details (shrugging off that invasion
of privacy…hehe).

Well, my attention for
almost a couple of months has focused on blogging. It is an unusual thing to me
for becoming such a blog freak these days after several months of hibernation. I
usually spend my free time enhancing my own blogs, blog-hopping, and other
related stuffs.

Right now, I’m in that
feeling when someone is really motivated to do something and to end up each day
somewhat fulfilled. The good thing about it is that I love writing, which makes
blogging more interesting. My blogs have become my outlet of self-expression.
This is my way of giving voice to my personal take on anything I find
significant.

I believe that, when
someone puts his heart into something, there is love creating its own strings. It
is such that someone doesn’t have to be romantically involved with somebody
else for him to give out love and to feel it in return. Love is made from
anything worth-doing. In my case, I love what I’m doing these days. Period.

Lastly, I ended up my
Valentine’s Day in the company of good friends and new acquaintances. We took
dinner and shared laughter together in the round table barbecue party. That is,
in this love season, it’s just coincidental how I rekindle my love for
blogging. On one hand, it can be just nothing to someone else (kevs!), but this motivating point of my
life is the result of how love really works in mysterious ways.

Indeed, I’m very
grateful for this love blossomed from the passion I’ve made.

Before I forget, I want to share with you again this romantic sunset I captured on Valentine's Day as the sun started to set in giving way for lovers to enjoy the darkness. :)

That feeling when an
inspiring movie made you smile. That moment wherein you are carried away by
such weighty and inspiring lines thrown away between two leading characters
during the movie’s climax. That situation when you think of the movie as an
eye-opener on your part as a person and as a lover. That feeling when you just
can’t help but analyze the line “God made me love you.” That scenario where you
unintentionally skipped meal just to spend your lunch time watching a full romantic
movie. That feeling when you internalize movie lines like this one: "God is
writing our own love story."

And, all of these
happened when I was watching a Bollywood movie, “Match Made By God” (Rab Ne
Bana Di Jodi, 2008), on the very first day of the English Days celebration of
Surigao State College of Technology on February 2nd at the Academic
Center.

It is very unusual for
me to be completely carried away by a single movie. Typically, I could feel
some sparks flying on romantic movies like Titanic, A Crazy Little Thing Called
Love, among others. Or, it’s me be amazed by sci-fi movies like Avatar, Star
Wars Series, Extra-Terrestrial, Transformers, etc. But, this Indian movie is
totally different on me. It made me stuck in the moment, as if I’m all alone at
the top of the hill facing before a scenery of the blue sea in the distance and
the lush vegetation when I’m going to turn my head back.

Watching the movie was
as if I were on my most relaxing day. You know, that moment when you draw
almost all your emotions, letting them all out once and for all. And, after
which, it’s the new you in the making.

The moment I was done
with the movie viewing, I was walking on my way home with gladness and cheers. The
movie really brought me to the sweet valley of realities about love. I dare say
that love—in its general sense—is the ultimate reason why we are still alive. It
is our anchor in living our individuality in the hands of time. Furthermore, it
made me realize that true love does not exist because we create them. True love
comes to us because God has paved the way for us to find it. So, when we love
the person, we don’t have to reflect on his imperfections and look over his
real best self. For in the end, God has perfectly matched that person to us.

It’s not going to be
that perfect in the process, but God has reassured us that the reason we have
to experience some sort of ‘zigzags’ in a relationship is that He wants us to
learn lessons in the process. And, such learnings would become our treasure
chest of living a life anchored on love.

After all, I really
affirm that God is the One writing our very own love story. With gladness, we
just have to surrender it all to Him.

Internet is a free enterprise. Within the domains
of this worldwide web, we can teach minds, touch hearts and transform lives.
Indeed, the sense of accountability seems so essential for netizens like us.
We’re being technopreneurs in the making considering that we trade ideas,
subscribe products or services online, among others.

Anybody from all ages can freely use the internet.
There are kids who enjoy playing online games. There are oldies who take time
enjoying the advantage of social networks as replacement for circles of friends
reunions. There are virtual stage parents who keep fraction of their time
following the tracks of their tech savvy children through the latter’s likes,
status, comments, tweets, and other digital trails in various internet
applications. Above all, there is this generation of young Filipino netizens
age ten to thirtysomething who take the lion’s share in the breakdown of
internet users in the country.

Knowing such wide and diverse audience, it is very
important for a typical blogger or internet user to take his full
responsibility. He must think twice before he has to post any update to his
accounts in social networking or microblogging sites. That is, it is crucial to
remember this: Do not post anything which will cause regrets later.

Our posts are magnified a thousand times. We should
bear in mind that we are so lucky living in a society with so much respect on
democracy and human rights. We have such democracy in using the internet as a
tool for learning and self-improvement. Apparently, it is not such right
wherein we are bound to hurt other people or to provoke anger or dispute. Along
with this freedom is the responsibility left to ourselves. This responsibility
keeps us being grounded in making digital prints which defy the norms of
internet protocols and societal standards.

In this generation where the momentum of social media is so much influential, it is very important to subscribe anything on the
internet which has anchored to the canons of good taste. As internet users, we
must think twice before we click. That is, we should put it into our heart and
mind that we may not become vulnerable to internet risks if we keep fraction of
our time to think twice. Our vulnerability to the downside of internet and
social media inches closer towards us when we care for ourselves and others at
the very least.

We are living in this Google generation—the
generation which has introduced the world to the height of digital age. We are
living in a society of tech savvy netizens who make the country a walking
distance in just a couple of streets over.

Going back to the family being the smallest
institution of our society, we have to picture out ourselves in the image of
family members who enjoy freedom with responsibility.

If
being a responsible netizens starts from our hearts nurtured in a family who
values sense of accountability, we ourselves seem to benefit the most being an
effective technopreneurs in this free enterprise—the internet.

Humility is a precious gift from God. It is the power to see things through the eyes of a layman. Regardless of what we have in life and for who we are as persons, we have to cling to this humility cycle. After all, God is humility Himself. He humbled Himself to save us.

Now, if Jesus did, why couldn't we? We really have to be humble. It is not an obligation considering that we have this free will. But at least, we really have to work hard in order to project a life that is towered by humility.

God doesn't want us to embrace pride. Sometimes, this pride brings us to the edge of undesirable circumstances. God has His rulings. Yet, we let ourselves fall into pride's shoulders. It's what we have to do in our life that counts in the end, however. Though God has to expose us to the shoulders of pride, He precisely opposes pride as our anchor to live life once and for all.

That is, as humans as we are, we have to see things in the eyes of a humble creatures. If we take shelter in the canopy of humility, chances are we become the lamps that God wants us to be--lamps that light everyone's world. In that sense, our lives would become an epitome of individuality strengthened by the grandest force of nature--humility.

Be humble. We have to be humble. For in the end, Jesus Christ is humility Himself.

AVENUE FOR ESTABLISHING OUR SOCIAL IDENTITY

"Facebook has changed our social DNA," Time Magazine. In the momentum of social media, we are now able to create our social identity on the web.

Social networking and microblogging sites like Facebook and Twitter continue to set trends in the present status quo. These sites become an avenue for us to establish our own name online. Facebook is now replacing class reunions. By just having an account, we can follow the digital footprints of our close friends, among others. Twitter documents the timeline of what's going on in our lives. It nudges us to share our Twitter-shortened piece of mind on random things which may become our treasure chest of our feelings and experiences.

Keeping in touch to each other is apparently becoming frequent and a privilege. Communication of friends becomes online in nature. Despite the distance, friendship still flourishes down the road. Being away from each other is not anymore a missing scenario.

On one hand, this momentum of social media gives us such break to reach others, even those whom we don't know. This is the good thing about the internet. If you think your mingling with others is not enough, here comes the way of reaching a wide and diverse audience.

It sounds heartwarming if we can receive positive comments from netizens that we don't know. It somehow boosts our self-confidence to do more sharing on the web. This is good if we advocate something online or we want to share something which is worth-spending for someone's precious time.

However, in the course of doing so, we can't avoid internet prints which defy the norms of 'what is wrong' and 'what is right' based on our concepts of morality and culture. Furthermore, it's a fact that we are in charge of setting our own identity--be it online or not. That is, we have all the options to choose how the way these sites make us achieve such social identity projection.

That is, privacy is a crucial thing in social media. And, this privacy relies on us on to what extent we have to share ourselves online. For instance, we can choose who can view our photos, profiles, and other personal data entries.

The impact of social media has really come this far. It provides us the sense of belongingness on the web. It takes us to the edge of social upheaval. After all, social media, I might add, has really changed our social DNA. Such change now depends on the matter of change for the better or change for the worse.
Two days after the nation celebrated the Feast of the Black Nazarene. Millions of devotees of the Black Nazarene were flocking to the Mini Basilica of the Black Nazarene or the Quiapo Church to take glimpse and to commune to the centuries-old icon. The feast extended to some parts of the country with the Black Nazarene being their patron.

The highlight of the celebration was the 22-hour procession wherein devotees and other faithful Catholics inched closer to the miraculous icon, to touch His holiness. Others have said that the image could heal the broken heart, the hopeless soul, and could bring light to the darkness side of life.

The procession is the obvious portrayal on how faithful Filipinos are. In this tradition of Thanksgiving, Filipinos show their being resilient. For all such hertaches that poverty brings, for all such hopelessness that nature's wrath lays down the road, for all such gestures of giving up caused by life's imperfections, here is the way of trusting it all to Jesus in the image of the Black Nazarene.

Despite such challenges faced by some of our Filipino countrymen caused by nature's wrath, there's still hope beaming in in the distance.

The procession, passing through the streets in the Manila metropolis, lasted for 22 hours before it headed back to Quiapo Church. It's almost a day of sincere devotion.

Faith, for many Filipinos, is a strong desire to keep going. It keeps Filipinos to the standpoint of resilience and courage. This long tradition of celebrating the Feast of the Black Nazarene is a way of giving it back. It is paying tribute to the Great Provider. For all such sacrifices, it's all worth it. It's all worth it for Him. After all, He is the way, the truth, and the life.

ENGAGE IN

In the very early morning, I have been able to feed my mind about healthy thoughts and a dose of inspiration.

According to John C. Maxwell, the author of the bestselling book Today Matters, "It's a fact that you become more like the people you spend time with. If you desire to increase your faith, spend time with others who exercise theirs. Learn from them. Find out how they think."

The statement hit me to the bones. It's as if reminding me to live with a company worth to keep. I aspire to live in the principle of building relationships based on trust and respect. In my 24 years of existence, I do believe that man is a social animal. We really need others to live.

But, such notion doesn't stop there. We need others but we have to be very careful in choosing people whom we want to spend our time with. Ideally, it's good to keep a company of brilliant people who think outside the box. It's a good opportunity for us to learn many new things from them. As the saying goes, "Birds of the same feather flock together." On one hand, it's better to keep fraction of our time to engage in people who inspire us to live according to God's purpose. They are these people who value faith. They are those who live God's words through their actions. In short, they are men for others.

Everyone of us wants to live a life based on better relationships and financial security. But, it doesn't necessarily mean that we have to compare ourselves with others. As Desiderata stresses it out," If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself." Furthermore, it is very difficult to live entangled on the desire to live like what others do.

In fact, the most important discovery in life is to find ourselves down the road. By the time we find ourselves, our true identity, we are able to sketch a character based on our aspirations to live by.

Our ultimate ordeal is to be men for others. Being men for others nudges us to get to know ourselves better. Once we do, everything else follows. To engage in service for others by spending our time with them, it becomes a lifetime significance.

For in the end, the fact that we become more like the people we spend time with reminds us to really engage in...

DIGITAL LITERACY

The world now becomes a global village.
With just a click of our fingertips, we can get bits of information we
want to know with so much ease. The internet becomes an indispensable
tool in gathering and acquiring information of almost everything under
the sun.

This world wide web brings forth the dawn of information and digital age. And, along with such digital age is the emergence of the essentials of digital literacy.

In
the context of education, digital literacy is a new venture for
educators to follow. In this generation made closer by social media and online
communication, the need to get acquainted with this digital literacy is
a must. This is where every educator must respond to the needs and
demands of societal change in terms of technology advancements.

In
our country, however, the concept of digital literacy is still raw.
Being a third world country, digital divide in the Philippines is so
apparent. Only few privileged learners could maximize the use of these digital devices.
Though information and communication technology has been integrated in
the basic education curriculum, majority of our young learners are still
in the process of catching up things as far as digital literacy is
concerned.

Accordingly,
thorough acceptance of this new norm in literacy is somewhat hard to
grasp about considering the situation of such marginalized learners. The
modern convenience brought about by these digital devices is not
completely viable in the present status quo.

Furthermore, digital divide
is not only confined between the privileged and the marginalized
learners. It could be seen to some extent in the teacher-learner
relationship. So, in the educative process, there's really a gap between
these teachers who are still practicing and using traditional means and
these tech savvy youngsters.

Nowadays,
young learners tend to be more knowledgeable about such trending
digital devices than adults do. More so, there are those digital natives
who are growing up along with the convenience that these latest
technologies bring to people. That is, for the educators, it would
really mean that more effort should be made in order to gradually bridge
this gap.

Teachers must see to it that they have to use technology
as means to a desired end, not an end itself. They must promote this
new generation learning atmosphere anchored on personalized learning
experiences, rather than focusing on using technology as the end tool
for learning.

In this world of twitter-shortened information labeling, digital literacy
becomes an advantage, especially among teachers and other stakeholders
in the educative process. For the teachers to keep pace with these trendings, they must embrace the idea of using technology as an opportunity to maximize personalized paths of learning.

Along with such promising future of digital literacy in the Philippines accounted for its tech savvy netizens, teachers must have at least exposed this new generation of learners to the culture of global innovation as to education and learning.

These innovative paths of learning doesn't have to be a threat for information overload
on the part of the learners. For the teachers, this is more on
connecting and engaging to the learners as to ways they best learn.

For
in the end, the ultimate goal of modern education is this connection or
engagement among our teachers and learners. Whatever means and
innovations being used to achieve this desired goal is a reflection of
how digital literacy becomes an effective avenue for learning.

In
retrospect, despite such apparent digital divide, teachers themselves
should bear in mind that digital literacy is achievable by purpose.
After all, the free will to introduce digital literacy to this new generation of learners what matters the most.

The discovery of a new planet, Kepler 22-b, brings
forth the high noon of space revolution. It has paved way to the gradual
discoveries of the vast universe. Scientists believe that life exists in this
water-covered planet with a surface temperature of more or less 22* Celsius. As
to the possibilities that life’s existing in this new planet, scientists hope
for more discoveries in the future that would open doors for humans to get a
closer look of the huge universe.

This newly-discovered planet orbits a huge star in
the habitable zone Kepler system. It takes 290 days or one year for the planet
to complete an orbit, closer to Earth’s 365.

This phenomenal discovery discloses the mysteries
of our universe. This is another milestone for human’s history in the making.
Aside from the scientists themselves, every human being must take part to
celebrate this breakthrough in space exploration. These discoveries push us
forward to the future of space invasion beyond imagination.

That is, fill your mind and soul with exultation as
you look over this phenomenal discovery. Celebrate the thought that we, Earth’s
inhabitants, are not all alone. There may be a population or community of living
things or other beings somewhere else in the universe.

So much has been discovered from planets to
galaxies and other heavenly bodies, but humans are still looking forward for
more. As the song goes, “Let’s get physical.” In the context of space exploration,
let’s work hand in hand to unleash the physical face of our universe.

The discovery of Kepler 22-b takes us to the door
of unlimited possibilities that our mysterious universe has still a lot to
offer in store.

Family stories around reconciliation, bondings, conflicts, among others, are just so special to me. I adore families. I celebrate family joys, teamwork, and reunions. I empathize family conflicts and misunderstandings. It's just that such stuffs mean to me a lot. Perhaps I've just missed my mother so much. And, I've longed for motherly love.

Tonight's episode of ABS-CBN's teleserye, 100 Days To Heaven, portrays the reconciliation of Toy Company's CEO Ana Manalastas and her only daughter, Sophia. Frankly, the lines exchanged by the two hit me to the bones. It reminds me of my mother again. The episode reminds me of Morrie in Mitch Albom's "Tuesdays With Morrie." As paraphrased, we really have to say words of love and to do deeds of affection to our loved ones. It's because time is precious. What we have today being with our family may turn out different by tomorrow. That is, the bottomline is that we have to show our love right here, right NOW. We cannot set our own time being on hold. We live in this world uncertain about ours and anybody else's time.

Also, it is supposedly a good act to say sorry for those people whom we hurt with our profane words and inconsiderate actions. It's because the gesture of demonstrating your love and asking for an apology to people whom we have met on our way is far better than tomorrow's regrets. As much as possible, we have to avoid phrases like "If I could turn back the time..."

For instance, Charice poured her heart out upon the unexpected demise of her father, Ricky Pempengco. A certain Angel Capili allegedly stabbed Mr. Pempengco to death near a sari-sari store in Parañaque City. The suspect is now under the custody of Parañaque City Police while the investigation of the case is still going on.

In the recent ANC interview of Charice by Karen Davila, the young world singing sensation felt sad about the suspect's testimony of self-defense.

"Sa ngayon, hindi ko pa matanggap ang ginawa miya sa daddy ko. Gusto ko siyang makulong habambuhay," she said. Charice and her father didn't have much time seeing each other. It's allegedly because of family conflicts.

In retrospect, whatever Charice has to say about her longing for her father's presence and affection would go to no avail for her dad would no longer answer back such gestures of love to his daughter. On one hand, Sophia should not harden much her heart. She has to forgive Ana. She has to forget what Ana had done wrong on her, if there's any. After all, we all have mistakes in life. So, it would be inappropriate to point on other's shortcomings.

Our interpretation of mistakes may vary as to culture. That is, culture is relative. But, one thing remains a universal truth--everybody makes a mistake.

Lastly, my mother passed on when I was still a second grader. I have no more time to say how much I love and miss her. Yet, I have all the time in the world to show my love and affection to people whom she left behind. I still have my father, my three sisters and my brother.. Instead of focusing my attention to things that I and my mother could no longer do, I have to stick to the idea that my family on the corner is ready to back me up no matter what.

Now is the time that I can share my warmth to my loved ones. I have to usher them to the journey of forming such pieces of our life's exciting and mind-boggling puzzle.

For in the end, beyond such happy moments and imperfections I have seen in family relationships lies the truth that life is really spelled as T-I-M-E. How I wish I have enough time being with my mother again. :)

100% SMOKE-FREE METRO MANILA BY 2012

The World Health Organization (WHO) marks May 31st as the World No Tobacco Day.

In the Philippines, this day seems to be a red-letter day especially for smokers. That is, on the eve of World No Tobacco Day, the Metro Manila Development Authority has to enforce this "100% Smoke-Free Metro Manila By 2012." This is the environmental campaign which bans smoking in public such as parks, markets, bus terminals, airports, seaports, among others.

Smoking is a dangerous thing. It is a passe, but we have to look it that way. You are on your way to ruining yourself once you have to try smoking. Statistics show that smoking is one of the major causes of deaths among Filipinos. The WHO backs it up by declaring that smoking increases the figures of dying youngsters worldwide. These figures seem to be enough proofs that smoking doesn't give you any good. Interestingly, these figures of passive smoking victims tend to level off. That is, even if you don't smoke, you are prone to second-hand smoking which causes some respiratory and other form of diseases. As innocent as you are, you are still a victim.

On that note, at least, you have it tried. And, as far as "pakikisama" is concerned, you are said to be good enough. Historically, puffing up cigarettes is a culture that Filipinos have copied from Spaniards. It is one symbolic means of being that "tunay na lalaki." It is a way of doing "pakikisama." It is an effective escape from boredom and pressures.

Today is the beginning of the enforcement of no-smoking ban. The MMDA traffic enforcers, local government health and sanitation officers, together with the members of the Philippine National Police, would round up the entire Metro Manila. If you are caught smoking, these local health officers would impose a fine of Php500.00 for first offense for puffing up a cigarette in public. In ways that you can't afford paying off the fine, you have to render an 8-hour community service as arranged by the MMDA authorities.

As noted, this environmental campaign is a part of the anti-tobacco use program funded by the New York-based Bloomberg Philanthropies. This two-year agreement for "Enforcement of a 100-percent Smoke-free Environment Policy in Metro Manila" was signed by the then MMDA Chair Oscar Inocentes and the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, or the Union, in the first quarter of 2010.

This campaign attracts the Union, a France-based nonprofit scientific organization promoting lung health worldwide. That is, the Union has endorsed the program of the MMDA to Bloomberg Philanthropies, a charitable institution of American billionaire entrepreneur-turned-New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg. Accordingly, the Bloomberg Philanthropies has approved the Php9.5 million grant to finance the said environmental campaign.

This 100% smoke-free Metro Manila by 2012 environmental campaign has such a noble purpose. After all, it does jut intensify the implementation of laws as provided for in the Republic Act No. 9211, otherwise known as the Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003.

We just hope that the implementation of this environmental campaign would never go to no avail after World No Tobacco Day. For in the end, we, Filipinos, are just here to cooperate.

ON BEING SUCH A SPACE GENIUS

If I were to ask about what subjects do I really miss, it would be astronomy and astrology.

As a person, I'm really crazy about space, sky, stars, moon, the universe, the heavenly bodies, and anything related to them. Studying these things make me such a true-blue learner. I don't find any boredom flipping off the pages of any book about such topics.

I'm nut when I could hear anything about space. It's my dream to see planets through my naked eyes, but i could only see Venus for that. For the other planets, I have to use telescopes.

It would be a good experience, if not the best, having this star or sky gazing at night. For me, this hobby makes me relieved from any problem that comes along my way. Simply watching and gazing these stars makes me feel that life is really such wonderful.

We're here in the world for a reason. We should value what God has given to us. If only God would let me to make a wish, it would be a travel in space with Him. Seeing His lovely creations is such a great honor.

Stars, most often, egg me on to dream big. They are there in the sky sparkling and glittering for us to see that life is made with choices. Therefore, we have the freedom to choose between what's good for us, what's right from wrong, what's the best over the typical thing. You know...choices that make us keep going. After all, we have that freewill.

The moon, in its own bets, opens many miracles at night if moon basking is your thing. It's moonlight beams all over the Earth trying to figure out how lovely are God's creations in halfway round the world.

The moonlight that shines every corner of the other side of the Earth is telling us that there is time for miracles. Miracles which explain how wonderful life would be. How wonderful that we have got this life to live for! How wonderful that we have these people to love for! How wonderful that we have these bountiful and beautiful works of nature worth caring and preserving for. For in the end, the gesture of taking breaths to catch up life is a huge blessing. I bet we have still some more...

Oh, God! Thank you for such insurmountable blessings.

It's a sort of book that I couldn't simply put down after I'd read the synopsis. Well, as it turned out, nothing really lasts forever except love.

What we have right now does not guarantee that it would somehow bring us to the realm of everlasting life. Career. Family. Friends. Money. Possessions. Price Tag. All these would have come to the point of leaving us empty-handed. For what remains to be enduring at hands of time is the soul--the soul that gratifies the thirst of humanity, but obeys the divine truth of love.

It is a symbolic and implicit truth that love is really what all that matters. Sidney Sheldon brings in the life of three woman physicians who have been through the tests of time. Behind the glory of their astounding success in their career, something pulls them back down because of the definition of wrong circumstance.

After all, their lives could be summed up as astonishing especially Kat Hunter's. Their experiences simply stand as the building blocks of how powerful and excellent doctors they have become.

Ans, so to our lives, what we have experienced--whether good or bad--actually tells us the notion of "there's glory in everything we've been through." The glory of standing still despite such adversities encountered. The glory of declaring before the world: "Oh, men! I have been through it."

And, the common denominator why we are still up today behind such inevitable rays of time is love. Love for ourselves. Love for our individuality. Love for our fellows. Love for Him. That is, the reason that nothing really lasts forever is the truth that love is, indeed, what all that matters.

Outside love, nothing lives.

DUMAGUETE CITY: From An Art Aficionado and Culture Advocate's Point of View

BELFRY

I was in awe the first time I saw this belfry. It's somewhat old for a layman's view, but it is very rich as culture and art is concerned.

The first time I set foot in Dumaguete, I directly went to this place at Sta. Catalina de Alejandria Cathedral. I lit a candle and prayed sincerely that I may be in good hands in this total strange place for me.

Historically, the belfry was used as signal for Dumagueteños that there were some pirates and conquerors who were going to land in the place.

STA. CATALINA DE ALEJANDRIA CATHEDRAL

It is a 17th century stone church and taunted to be the oldest stone church in Negros Island. I like the facade of the cathedral and the whole pastoral compound including a convent and some houses for clergymen. The facade makes the cathedral more inviting.

RIZAL BOULEVARD

The ambiance and the atmosphere of Rizal Boulevard is so impressive--lamp posts, benches, baywalk, acacia trees, among others. It is a little escape from the bustling downtown Dumaguete. It is safe there because one way is intended for walking and the other is for vehicles, actually a national highway.

The center island where acacia trees flaunt their shades is perfect for picnic and contemplation. I have observed some families would just roll their mat out in the lawn and bring with them some food. And, it's a picnic in the picture.

As to safety, police visibility is obvious. There is nothing to worry about. Police would roam around every now and then for security check.

On the other end of the Boulevard is the place for tempora, fish ball, balot, among others. Foodies would somehow gratify their gastronomic desires upon trying it there. Almost every night which the time I used to roam around, many people have to take hefty and small meals in the balot area. I could also see many people do jogging and brisk walking. In the distance, you could see the Siquijor Island and Cebu Province.

On the other end is the Zone Therapy and Curie Massage. I have had long observations there. For only Php50.00, you would somehow feel spa experience which is said to be expensive. By observing, I bet I now know how to do a massage therapy. And, I believe my father would really like it if I have him reflexed.

It's safe also for kids because you could still see and set foot to the sand when it's low tide compared to Surigao wherein it is high tide all year round. That's why, it's not child-friendly.

Plus, the live band would surely resonate your senses while taking relaxation. The other side is the Rizal Avenue with array of establishments like hotels, bars, offices, among others. During weekends and Fridays, live bands play music where people could freely see and listen to.

Even if you spend your whole night here, I bet it's more rewarding than getting drunk somewhere else.

QUEZON PARK

It is equivalent to Luneta in Surigao. I bet both are the same. They only differ in structure. The presence of playgrounds, kiosk, walkways, monuments are the same in Surigao's Luneta. As to size, they are almost equal. I do think so.

AQUINO FREEDOM PARK

This is what I call the perfect place for a date. I bet this is the most romantic place in Dumaguete so far. This is where I've spent most of my free time. The presence of big trees makes your stay in the park. The green lawn and the shrine-like structure seem so inviting to the eyes. I really like it here always. The walkway is perfect for 'Holding Hands While Walking.' Plus, it's too clean here. You could barely see the green lawn all over the place. If you're in the center viewing the park, you're somewhat entering the Buckingham Palace. It's the capitol of Negros Oriental in the distance. It's like a White House. In front of the capitol is the fountain with colorful LED lights, plus the solar panel.

I really like the structure of the park. In every pathway, you could just relax. In every corner, it's perfect for 'in the pensive mood.' It's also perfect for dating because it's somehow exclusive. As to safety, there are security guards who are doing security check routine. The border of the park is flanked with acacia trees adding a perfect romantic picture of the place.

At night, it's good for stargazing and moon basking. It's cool because you could barely see the sky. The silence could just make you cry.

Why The Human Vibe Rater?

I started this blog in the late third quarter of 2010. With hopes of sustaining my interest on writing, I made this blog to somehow motivate me to always write in white heat.

Don't be fooled by the name itself! I'm neither a spy nor a weirdo. I named it The Human Vibe Rater in as much as I always pay close attention to things and to people. Most often, I silently read someone's personality on my own through his words and actions, and I observe keenly the atmosphere or the general vibe of any place that my feet would take me away.

Aside from personal entries, my goal for this blog is to share my personal take on random subjects I observe. It is not merely being able to share my ideas but to create an online atmosphere that is something significant, inspiring and innovative. Most of all, as a blogger, it is my way to mobilize myself to promote the art of keen observation as our first step to learn.

This is a lifestyle blog wherein I will share the perks of being a keen observer--a human vibe rater on that note. Who knows? The hours I've spent in observing may answer some of my questions about humanity and the universe being left unanswered.

Leading a country of trendsetters, the Aquino administration
is firm to pose change to the challenge and questions of transparent governance
anchored on political agenda for the common good.

Being an advocate of education himself, P-Noy sets
a 10-point agenda for basic education to carry out the administration’s promise
of change-for-the-better-oriented and transparent governance. In living such
tagline: “Kung walang corrupt, walang mahirap,” such agenda have to be
magnified a thousand times as it has been going through down the road.

The first of President Benigno Aquino’s 10-point
agenda for basic education is the expansion of the basic education to a 12-year
cycle or better known as the enhanced K+12. Since DepEd’s announcement about
this proposed K+12, this attempt has stirred a lot of debate among education stakeholders
and other institutions in the society.

This radical change to be implemented by DepEd is
to visualize the Philippine educational system as a dynamic, learner-centered
and purpose-driven. Basically, the highlight of this change is the addition of
two more years in the basic education system. This new curriculum will be
implemented by the school year 2012-2013. Apparently, the basic education
system of the Philippines follows the K+6+4+2 pattern comprising a universal
kindergarten, six-year elementary, four-year junior high school, and two-year
senior high school.

As to purpose, the enhanced K+12 is envisioned to
decongest the present overcrowded curriculum. This overcrowding results to “Information
overload” on the part of our young Filipino learners.

The 2010 Ramon Magsaysay award-winning physicists
Bernidos have disclosed that the curriculum must be enhanced as to quality, not
on the quantity. That is, the Bernidos suggested for curricular programs that
cater the needs and demands of the society. New programs should be introduced,
and those unnecessary electives should be eliminated. Furthermore, curriculum
planners must have it secured that learners should be exposed to this “laboratory
of life” by formulating curricular programs that enhance the functional
literacy and practical competencies of the learners. This full responsibility lies
to our teachers who take a lion’s share in this curriculum-implementing body.

In the course of proposing this change in the basic
education, many good and not-so-good points (pros and cons) have emerged in
different forms and sizes, to wit:

a. This
K+12 is necessary to keep pace with other countries in terms of the number of
years of the pre-university education system;

b. There
is a need to decongest the curriculum by strengthening the “necessary” and
eliminating the “unnecessary”;

c. The
low achievement test scores among our students in international competitions,
particularly in trends in Science and Mathematics, suggest a need to review the
curriculum;

d. This
proposal eats up a lion’s share in our national budget. The DepEd should see to
it that every centavo allocated for these agenda be spent wisely;

e. It
would be another burden for most parents to send their students to school for
two more years;

f. Graduates in the 10-year pre-university
education cycle are not that ready for the world of work;

g. Diploma
earned after senior high school is not that inviting for employers considering
the increasing figures of the “unemployed” and the “underemployed”;

h. And,
many others.

Through our DepEd led by Sec. Armin Luistro, our government
takes us to a glimpse of ideal society inhabited by the “intellectually-elite”
who are going to propel forward our knowledge-based economy to its place in the
world arena.

Anyway, there’s no harm in trying. For as long as
there’s political will backed up with collective support among our education
stakeholders, this enhanced K+12 basic education program is going to be a risk
worth-taking.

THE SELF-CONFESSED QUEUE

It’s your turn. You’re
up. You’re next. It’s your time. These are words resonate in my patience the
most.

My life is evolving
around the word TIME. For this reason, I do believe that life is really spelled
as T-I-M-E. I keep fraction of my hours a day to really look over the things I’ve
done for the whole day. This is a sort of daily accounting as to how I made my
thoughts, how I react to random things, and what I value more.

Time, for me,
defines my total well-being. I’ve been through many glitches, and I surrender it
all to time. Though I consider one experience a bummer, there’s always a soft
spot of my heart which keeps on telling me that everything is going to be
alright. That is, I take pleasure submitting myself to the hands of time. For I
believe, time is kept by our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Behind such little successes
I’ve achieved and little things I’ve engaged in down the road is the
significance I value more. That is, the thought of seeing the bright side of
every endeavor I’ve made really gives me the clue to step up the ladder. Each
time I spend on things that really matter speaks my true and best self. Time I
squandered on wrong people is the moment which I’ve become discerning about the
significance of seizing in the moment.

In the course of
living a life anchored on ginormous respect towards time itself, I dare say
that what we, people, need is just a little patience. Despite the gesture of
rushing things out, there’s still a shining shield telling us that everything happens
for a reason in its own time.

All we have to do is
to extend a little respect on the timekeeper, Himself. There’s a good thing in
waiting. Whether you like it or not, you cannot dictate each second to move for
your desired direction. For in the end, we are all passers-by.

I’ve been through many
faces of challenges. I’ve been through many shapes of happy and sad moments. I’ve
been through different sizes of achievements and opportunities. I’ve been
through ups and downs in my own little ways. What keeps telling me to be
patient is the bright spot of my heart draped with so much respect on the time
and on the Timekeeper. For submitting yourself to Him is the last solace you
can achieve.

After all, we’re all
in this world within our time allotment. We are all passers-by. We live in a
temporary biological clock. What matters most is the virtue of waiting coupled
with deeds taking shelter in a healthy disposition.

I’m a self-confessed
queue. I do wait for my turn. I do fall in line. I do respect delayed answers.
I do understand questions left unanswered. What’s important is that I live life
at my best.
