Dieting can be quite a task to take on. Starting a diet is the easy part, staying on the diet is nowhere near as easy. Dieting effectively not only requires discipline, it requires sustained motivation. Weight loss isn’t just going to happen. You have to work at it and stay motivated enough to reach your target weight. Here are five tips you can use to make sure you stick to your diet plan.

Finding the right fit

You need to determine what type of diet is best for you. It may take a couple of tries but don’t give up. There’s a diet out there with your name on it. Some diets restrict sugary foods, others restrict carbs while yet others concentrate on saturated and trans fats. Try different diets out and see which one you’re more comfortable with. When you find the right one you will know it. You will notice your energy level will increase, which in turn increases your will power to keep going.

Weight loss buddy

Enlist the help of a friend who may want to drop a few pounds as well. Two heads are always better than one. By having a weight loss buddy you will always have someone who will hold you accountable, and vice versa. You will have someone to share your triumphs with and keep your head up when you fail. Sometimes, this can make all the difference in the world.

Don’t beat yourself up

You may make mistakes occasionally. It is okay. Do not beat yourself up over it. You should just move on and try to do better. Nobody has ever gone on one diet, been successful and never needed to diet again. Dieting is a long journey filled with successes and failures. Learn to accept that it’s all a part of the journey.

Keeping your goals

Set realistic goals and go out and accomplish them. Don’t set goals that are far too hard to do. You’ll only set yourself up for failure and disappointment. Goals give you something to work toward, so set small goals and reach them every time. When you reach a goal go ahead and treat yourself. Go out and buy that dress, purse or shoes you’ve been wanting, you deserve it.

Keep track

Keep a log or journal of what you eat and how much physical activity you have done for the day. This will keep you motivated. By doing this you will learn what works for you and what doesn’t. It’s also an ideal way to see if you are making progress.

Losing weight isn’t easy. There’s so many diets out there that you don’t know which one works and which one doesn’t. The truth about diets is that none of them work in the long run. Sure you’ll lose a few pounds to start but will this be sustained weight loss? Unless you plan on following the diet the rest of your life, it’s not.

Rather than wasting money on a fad diet you should lose weight the natural way. You can lose weight naturally by making a few lifestyle changes, rather than taking drastic steps. When you do lose weight gradually, you will keep the weight off quite possibly for the rest of your life. Here are ten tips to help you lose weight the natural way.

Eat Smaller Portions

When fixing your plate, serve your food on a smaller plate. Naturally when we serve ourselves food we fill up the plate. Therefore, by serving yourself on a small plate you will eat smaller portions. Doing this will help you control the amount of food you consume.

Eat More Often

If you’re trying to lose weight you’d think you would want to eat less. But the correct formula is to eat less more often. Try and eat small portions throughout the day. A great way to eat more food is to snack on fruits and vegetables, rather than on junk food.

Substitute Food

When possible, substitute your food for a healthier alternative that tastes almost as good. One example is substituting butter for vegetable oil when cooking. Another is using a low fat or low sodium version of the same food.

Exercise

Get plenty of exercise because exercise is crucial with weight loss. The goal is to burn calories. So take a walk, take the stairs, jump up and down. It does not matter what you do as long as it is physical.

Weight Scale

Avoid weighing in every day. Weight fluctuates from day to day. Watching these fluctuations can cause discouragement if you work out and end up gaining a few pounds. It’s important to keep track of your progress, just as long as you don’t do it every day.

Eat Slowly

Do not rush through a meal. It takes a while for the brain to realize your stomach is full. So if you eat slowly, your brain can keep up. Also remember to chew your food good, as this helps with digestion.

Track Your Progress

Keep track of how well (or not well) you are doing during your weight loss journey. You can do this on a public blog, your facebook profile or in more private ways like a journal. It’s also a good idea to take pictures of yourself throughout the process.

Clean Out Your Kitchen

If you’ve got junk food in your kitchen, you’re going to eat it. The temptation is just too big to resist it. It may sit on your shelf for a day or two, but eventually you’re going to eat it. This is why you need to go through your kitchen and get rid of all things that are high in calories or fat. Replace those things with healthy addition like fruits, vegetables, and foods high in fiber. Obviously this is easier said than done, but if the fatty snacks are not there then you can’t mess up and eat them.

Eat Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. You’ve heard it before but it really is true. You have been asleep for hours and the body needs to refuel for the day. Skipping breakfast can cause you to eat more throughout the day. So have a good hearty breakfast so you won’t be eating junk food at night.

Don’t Give Up

If you slip, get up and try again. Do not give up and go back to old habits. You just pick right up where you left off. You’ve come too far to quit now.

Let’s face it, the gym is expensive. You can expect to shell out something in the neighborhood of $300 per year for a gym membership. For many this is an expense that cannot fit into their budget. So many people trying to lose weight forgo exercising altogether and just concentrate on eating healthy instead.

But exercising is just as important as dieting. Some people have no problem cutting back on the bad foods they eat but find it near impossible to hit the gym. Whether it’s because of the high cost of a gym membership or simply the lack of time. Well you don’t have to go to the gym to get a workout. This article will give you five exercises you can do outside of a gym. Keep in mind that after you read this, you will have no excuse to not exercise anymore.

Swimming

Summer will soon be upon us again and swimming is a great way to burn unwanted calories. Swimming is fun and seems less of workout because you actually want to do it. If you have an issue with not wanting to sweat, doing your exercises in the water can help with that.

If you swim the length of a full sized pool, going back and forth for one hour, you can burn 800 calories. Swimming is not only great for burning calories but it’s excellent for toning the body as well. Swimming provides full range of motion so all of your muscles get a workout.

Walking

Believe it or not walking is great way to exercise. You do not have to run, you don’t even have to power walk. You can walk at a steady yet brisk pace. You can burn up to 360 calories walking for an hour. Walking is also great for cardio and toning your muscles.

It is important to exercise every single day, even if it’s just a short walk with the dog outside. If you can’t find the time to go for a walk every day, park a bit further away in the parking lot at work, school or the grocery store. Those few extra steps every day really add up.

Dancing

Another fun way to exercise is to go dancing. You could go to a club or take some salsa dancing lessons if you chose too. Dancing for one hour can burn over 600 calories. The best part about dancing is it gives you a full body workout. You don’t even have to go out to do it. With some fun games on the Wii you can dance from the comfort of your own home.

Yoga

Yoga is an exercise that not only strengthens the body, but also the mind and soul. Yoga will give you great tone and better flexibility. You can burn up to 180 calories doing yoga. You could probably burn more depending on your level of training.

Hiking

Taking hikes brings you outdoors in fresh air with wonderful scenery. Taking in the great views will make you forget that you’re doing your workout. Taking a hike sure beats being trapped in a gym any day of the week. You can hike alone or bring a friend along with you. If you go with others, it makes it seems less like exercising and more like a fun activity. Go for a good one hour hike and you could burn off up to 350 calories.

Losing weight essentially boils down to calories. If you consume less calories than your body burns then you will lose weight. It takes 3,500 burned calories to equal one pound of weight loss. Now think of this, if you can eliminate 500 calories every day for 7 days, you will lose one pound per week. It might not sound like much, but imagine doing that for a whole year? There are 52 weeks in a year so that’s some serious weight loss if you can keep it up.

You might be thinking to yourself that if you can eliminate 500 calories per day then why not go for 1,000 per day. You’ll get to your goal quicker, after all. But it doesn’t work that way. Those who want results fast may get some quick weight loss, but it won’t be sustained weight loss.

If you were to begin a calorie-restrictive diet you would end up hungry and miserable in just a few days. It’s not possible to continue this pattern in the long term. Losing weight is supposed to be a rewarding experience that makes you feel good. So rather than cutting corners, lose weight the healthy way by following these 5 healthy weight loss tips.

1. Diet & Exercise

Don’t make it all about dieting. Sure, it’s great to cut back on late night snacks, but losing weight isn’t all about what you eat. You need to exercise while changing your eating habits. Doing both of these things is the key to losing weight in a healthy manner. When you eat less you are losing not only fat, but muscle as well. So don’t forget to take up walking or go for a jog or bike ride in addition to changing your eating habits.

2. Track Your Progress

It’s a great idea to take before, during and after pictures. Doing this will keep you motivated, especially if you see continued progress week after week. Better yet, post updates on your goals and weight on Facebook so your friends and family can keep you encouraged. Making your weight loss goals public is healthy because others can share their advice with you and warn you if you’re losing weight too quickly or over-exerting yourself. If you’re more of a private person, write down your short term goals, long term goals and results in a private journal.

3. Pace Yourself

You know how they say Rome wasn’t built in one day? They’re right. We all want to drop the pounds as fast as possible. But it is much better to lose a pound a week (or a month) than to lose 10 in one month. The reason is that if you go too quickly you’re going to quit because your body can’t take it anymore. The very next month you may find yourself gaining a lot more than the 10 pounds you lost. Rather than going “all out” with your dieting and exercise, make a lifestyle change that is not too drastic.

4. Moderation Is The Key

Everyone has a sweet tooth. There are some things that we may find impossible to give up. It can be a certain burger from a fast food restaurant nearby. It can be that late night snack that always leaves you feeling guilty after you eat it. It’s important not to completely eliminate these things that have so become a part of your daily life. Instead, gradually reduce the quantity and frequency of these naughty items you just can’t seem to quit having. Realize that, at least to start, eating these bad foods is acceptable in moderation.

5. Treat Yourself

Trying to lose weight can be taxing not only on the body but on the mind as well. There’s a whole host of emotions that people go through during their weight loss journey. There are the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. There are feelings of euphoria when you reach a milestone followed by feelings of guilt when you cheat on your plan. This is why you should reward yourself periodically throughout this journey. Buy yourself a present, take a mini-vacation off from work or go to a day spa. You deserve it.

People think that the key to weight loss is dieting and exercising. But I’m here to tell you that the key to weight loss is actually ambition and drive. You can’t lose weight (and keep it off) unless you continue to keep yourself motivated.

But just how can you keep yourself going when working out is so difficult and eating greasy foods is so easy. Read on for tips on how to keep yourself motivated and reach your weight loss goals.

Set Obtainable Goals

Goals are key to keep you motivated. You must remain realistic on this point. Most people will set goals that are over the top and they can not reach them. Keep your goals in your reach by setting only easily obtainable goals.

Safety In Numbers

Find someone to help you keep motivated. This is great for people who have the same goals. If you have a friend who is also looking to drop a few pounds you two should work out with each other.

Shout It out!

You reached a goal share it with people who care. You can Facebook or Tweet it. Every like or reply will help keep you motivated. You also have no idea the effect you may have on someone else who has the same goals as you.

Keep A Journal

Journaling is another good way to keep up your spirits. Right down what fitness routine you did and what you ate for the day. This will not only motivate yourself but you will find what works for you. Every time you have a success write it down (or blog about it).

Focus On The Positives

You may not reach every goal you set, but know that you are working on it. Stay positive. Don’t get down on yourself if you skip a few workouts or eat an unhealthy meal. Everybody has setbacks.

Treat Yourself!

If you reached a goal, treat yourself. You like shopping? Go out and buy yourself a new outfit. Do something that makes you feel good to reward yourself for your good behavior.

These are just a few things you can do to keep yourself motivated and keep your spirits up. You may not always reach every goal but it does not mean you can’t. It just may take a little more time. You should not give up. Keep in mind all the things above as motivation, and keep going until you reach your goal weight. You can do it.

If you’re fed up with your weight you may be willing to lose the weight at all costs. But there are healthy and unhealthy ways to lose weight. It is important you go about losing weight the proper and healthy way if you want to sustain your weight loss.

Sometimes, when people want to begin losing weight, they use crash diets or go mad on fitness. These methods are not healthy. You may lose a few pounds right away, but you will gain them back (and more) soon afterward. Here’s why you want to avoid these methods at all cost:

Avoid Crash Diets

Going on a crash diet typically consists of going on a diet that severely restricts your calories. These diets can cause you to have nutritional deficiencies in the long term. In the short term, sure you may lose a few pounds. But even if you think you’re losing weight and the diet is working, this surely will not last. It’s practically impossible to continue eating diet foods forever. Odds are that after you stop you’ll go on an eating binge and end up worse off than when you started dieting.

There are healthier ways to get down to your weight goal. You can begin by changing your diet gradually. You should start to monitor your calorie intake, rather than drastically reducing it. You see your body needs energy from the food, but at the same time energy can be taken from the fat already stored on your body. Work towards eating smaller portions in each meal. It will be hard, but try to cut down on the sweets. You can find healthier alternatives with fruits and other foods. Do not skip meals. It may seem like you’re doing yourself a favor and cutting more calories, but you will probably end up eating more at the next meal. In order to lose weight the healthy way you still must eat properly.

Avoid Over-Exercising

If you haven’t exercised in years it might not be the best idea to hit the gym and take an advanced workout class. Your body is not prepared for this, which could put too much strain on your body and cause you to injure yourself.

Rather than diving in head-first, take things slowly. Making small gradual changes really does impact your weight loss. I know most people are not gym people but there are plenty of other things you can do that does not require you to set foot in a gym. You can get your exercise in by swimming, you can go walk the dog or go cycling for 20 minutes several times a week. This way you can get some fresh air while doing your workout.

If you lose weight the right way. You will not only reach your goal weight but, you are building yourself a healthier body. You will be cutting down your risk of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. There are so many benefits from dropping weight, but you need to do it the right way, the healthy way.

You probably have a good idea of what it takes to lose weight, but implementing those good ideas can be problematic. One of the biggest pitfalls busy dieters face is the temptation to go for the quick and easy fast food dinner over a slower, but more nutritious home-cooked meal. Choosing healthy recipes that also let you have dinner on the table quickly keeps your diet on track.

Chicken is a staple in healthy recipes for good reason. It’s full of lean protein and provides about 100 calories per 4-ounce serving. Boneless, skinless chicken also cooks quickly when pounded thin. Heat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. As the oven heats, slice a large 8-ounce chicken breast in two and pound the pieces flat until they’re about half an inch thick. Dredge the chicken in a wash of skim milk and egg, then coat it with a mixture of bread crumbs, grated parmesan cheese and half a teaspoon of fresh garlic. Spread the chicken cutlets in a baking dish and pour a drizzle of olive oil over each piece to keep it flavorful and moist as it bakes. Your parmesan-crusted chicken will be ready in about 15 to 20 minutes.

That chicken isn’t dinner until you surround it with tasty side dishes. While your chicken cutlets bake, boil water for whole wheat pasta. You can open a jar and top it with a prepared tomato sauce, but making pasta primavera is a healthier option that’s almost as quick. As the pasta water comes to a boil, chop carrots, broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower or any other vegetable that piques your interest into bite-sized pieces. Dice half a medium yellow onion finely and sauté it in a tablespoon of olive oil until it’s translucent, then add the vegetables to the saucepan and cook them until they’re soft enough to suit your taste. Sprinkle on some salt and pepper. When the pasta’s cooked, drain it and add it to the vegetable mix in the saucepan. Stir in a tablespoon or two of grated parmesan cheese.

Serving any meal with a side salad boosts its nutritional value, but drenching salads in heavy cream dressings and showers of high-fat cheese can undo your diet. Roasted or pickled vegetables add flavor and crunch without many calories, so pile on the diced roasted peppers, tiny cornichon pickles, capers and corn relish. Choose vinaigrette dressings over sour cream dressings. If you can see through your dressing when you hold it to the light, it’s probably a good pick.

Once you have the basics of quick cooking down, you can vary the flavor profiles at will. For example, that pounded boneless chicken breast becomes the centerpiece of a Mexican-inspired meal if you swap the garlic and parmesan coating for cumin-infused cornmeal and serve it alongside brown rice cooked with tomatoes and peppers. Leave the chicken cutlets bare and baste them with a mixture of olive oil, lemon juice, yogurt and oregano for a Greek dish that goes beautifully with roasted vegetables and toasted pita.

No matter how you spice it, a diet-friendly dinner’s on the table in half an hour or less. That’s the kind of fast food that can make your diet a success.

You have the power to lose weight all on your own, without the need of spending a dime. In fact, you can even save a pretty penny too. All of those books on weight loss were created for one reason, to make money. All of those diets you’ve heard of (zone diet, south beach diet, atkins diet) were all created to make money. The workout videos you see on those late night infomercials were all created to make money. The exercise equipment you see on TV was also created to get money from your wallet.

As you can see, the weight loss industry is a billion dollar enterprise. The reality though is that real long lasting weight loss is all about eating healthy and exercising. If you can do both of those things you’ll be well on your way to losing weight and saving your money.

1. Plan Ahead – The best way to ensure that you won’t spend extra money on tempting junk food or sale items is to plan your meals ahead of time and make a list of the foods you need. You should also make sure to eat a meal or a snack before going to the grocery store so that your hunger won’t trick you into buying something extra or visiting all the sample stations.

2. Stock Up on Whole Grains – Grains such as rice, oatmeal, and pasta are inexpensive but pack lots of nutritional value. Make sure you buy whole grains that are the least processed, such as regular rather than instant oatmeal. These will have more fiber and vitamins.

3. Buy Produce In-Season – Eating lots of fruits and vegetables is part of a healthy diet, but these can often cost more if you don’t live in a warm climate year-round. Buying seasonal produce will cost less and taste better. For example, buy apples and squash in the fall and root vegetables like potatoes and carrots in the winter. When spring and summer come around, you can look forward to berries and leafy vegetables.

4. Freeze Meat for Later – Healthy, lean cuts of meat can often be more expensive than the fattier alternatives. However, when there’s a sale on meat there’s nothing wrong with buying in bulk and freezing some for later use.

5. Forget Microwave Dinners – Convenience meals are highly processed and don’t contain many nutrients. However, if you’re looking to save time, frozen fruits and vegetables are a great option that take little time to cook or incorporate into a dish. Contrary to popular belief, they can contain just as many nutrients as fresh produce, as long as they’re frozen right after picking.

6. Load up on Protein – Aside from meat, there are many sources of protein that are relatively inexpensive. Milk, eggs, ground turkey, cottage cheese, and canned tuna are all forms of protein that can easily work into a diet. Protein also helps with weight loss because your metabolism has to burn at a higher rate in order to digest it.

7. Lose the Bottles – You may have switched to drinking bottled water instead of soda. However, it’s much cheaper to buy a pitcher with a water filter and filter the water that comes out of your kitchen sink.

8. Add Beans – Like rice, dried beans are inexpensive and provide a fantastic source of protein and vitamins that can serve as the base for a variety of dishes.

9. Check the Cans – Buying canned foods is another cheap alternative to buying fresh. Make sure that foods you buy in a can are packed in juice and have low sodium contents.

10. Find Snack Alternatives – Instead of buying unhealthy snack foods like potato chips or Oreos, buy basic products that will make good snacks such as yogurt, apples, carrots, or nut mixes.
