Joe Cardamone got interviewed by Alice Magazine recently. It’s actually a really good interview, and worth checking out. Plus, there’s a really good quote that I particularly relished in which the Mighty Joe articulated that he associates himself with those who inspire him. Almost like every healthy relationship…

That’s the only way someone’s really included is, like, if they’re invested in a way that makes us feel like they’re invested in themselves and what they’re doing at the same kind of level that we are. And that’s the gatekeeper I guess.

As someone who has been a massive fan of The Icarus Line since THAT 5K Kerrang review, what can’t be emphasized enough is just how much of an impact Aaron North had whilst he was in the band – whether it be through Buddyhead or via his own numerous interviews that he conducted over the years. At the same time, Aaron also held a no holds barred approach towards his own stage performances, and this was adequately summarised by his unashamed attempt in “liberating” a guitar that supposedly once belonged to Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Of course, and despite the heady heights which Aaron Icarus reached during his 20’s, it was interesting to see how Aaron also came to emulate the same tragic flight trajectory of Icarus, with his 30’s signalling his own “sad descent… to nowhere“.

Nowadays, Aaron maintains a low profile and does comedy gigs on occasion. He also maintains an Instagram account, although his internet activity suggests that he isn’t at all interested in being an “influencer” to the same extent that he was when he was associated with Buddyhead. He’s also not interested in wanting to speak to a lot of people (as stated by Travis Keller – his one-time Buddyhead associate – in his ‘This Was The Scene’ interview at 51:34 timestamp). And I also found this to be the case when I tried to interview him a few weeks back. In any case, here is my “interview” with him… Enjoy!

Growing up, how were you introduced to rock music, and what made you pick up the guitar (as opposed to any other instrument)? How did your friends and family react to this, as well as your plans on becoming a musician?

I don’t know how to answer that honestly considering it was never a goal or “plan” of mine. My brother is a musician. He went to UCLA and majored in music. He performs and teaches. Still does. I’m sure at some point, considering they helped pay for his education, it was discussed with family members, etc. In my case, I was just jumping in shitty vans to make loud noises in front of confused strangers. I can’t read music… couldn’t if my life depended on it. I never took lessons or made attempts to become more “musician-like”… whatever that means. I picked up a guitar when I was 14 because it was enjoyable to me. My parents listened to a lot of rock n’ roll while I was growing up. They had a sizable record collection. All the big rock “standards” at that time… Beatles, Stones, Doors, Zeppelin, etc. A lot of Motown stuff as well.

To me, you’ll always be one of The Icarus Line’s greatest members. What does your stint within the band represent for you, and what is your proudest moment within The Icarus Line?

I’m proud of what we did as a band. I’m proud of the records we made. I don’t have an opinion on the records those guys made after I quit because I’ve never heard any of them.

As documented by LA Weekly, you were able to reconcile any differences between yourself and Alvin Deguzman prior to his passing. What is your favourite memory of your friend that you would like to share?

I wasn’t aware of having any differences with Al.

If it weren’t for being a musician, what career path would you have taken? At the same time, what made you decide to embark on pursuing standup comedy?

I don’t really know how to answer your questions about “career paths” or “the music industry”, etc. I haven’t played music in over a decade. When I did, it wasn’t because I was trying to make a career out of it. I played in bands when it was enjoyable and stopped whenever it wasn’t. I never made any decisions based on how they’d affect me financially. If my goal had been to “make it” as a “professional musician”, I wouldn’t have turned down offers to play with the Marilyn Manson’s, Queens Of The Stone Age’s, Chris Cornell’s, etc. As different as it is, my approach to standup is no different. I’m not trying to make a career out of it or appeal to everybody.

What are your future plans? Will you ever consider releasing an autobiography, getting back into the music industry, a possible reunion with any of your Buddyhead / Icarus Line, Nine Inch Nails, Jubilee cohorts, or starting another webzine etc?

No…

When I said I didn’t understand or agree with the premise of some of your questions… I get the impression that your viewpoint on what you’re asking me about is skewed. Or just plain wrong. I feel like most of the information you’ve based certain opinions on is hogwash. Anything concerning my departure from The Icarus Line would be included. The story those guys have believed and perpetuated over time is that I quit The Icarus Line so that I could go join Nine Inch Nails and make a lot of money and be famous or some horseshit. Couldn’t be further from the truth. I suppose that would soften the blow for them, or make it easier for them to understand why I left or something? Naw… in the weeks after quitting the band I was furiously filling out job applications for nearby fast-food restaurants. The truth was that I quit because I didn’t like some of the people I was in a band with anymore, and would have rather flipped burgers to pay my rent than have to stand next to them on stage even one more time. The Nails thing happened some time later and had nothing to do with any of that. Anyhoo, post whatever ya want. Stay outta trouble.

It must be stated that Aaron declined to answer any more of my questions, even though it was never my intention to slight him. I just wanted to know more about the person behind the guitar. At the same time, I never intended to dismiss his foray into “punk” as being some sort of “career move”.

I did try to rectify this by redrafting my questions (which you can read below), but Aaron didn’t want to participate any further.

You were really outspoken during your 20’s and had an acute understanding of how the music industry operated back then. What was the biggest lesson that you’ve ever learned during your time within the music industry, and what advice would you give to musicians starting out today – especially with the music industry being so different to what it was like in your heyday?

Now that you’ve hit middle age, what are the biggest lessons that life has ever imparted on you?

Growing up, you’ve often mentioned that you were inspired by bands such as Guns N Roses as well as Black Flag. Who would you regard as being your heroes and role-models now?

Aside from your venture in stand-up comedy, what are your future plans?

Finally, and when this is all over, how would you like to be remembered? What would you like your legacy to be?

Even if Don Devore’s stay within The Icarus Line was relatively brief, he still managed to contribute towards what many consider to be the band’s magnum opus (Penance Soiree). And whilst he would eventually exit the band after the release of Black Lives At The Golden Coast, a lot of people considered him to be part of the band’s classic lineup. Still, all things must come to an end eventually. And since then, Don’s done other things since, and is currently part of the duo that is Collapsing Scenery.

Growing up, what were your formative years like, and how were you introduced to the world of rock music? What made you decide to become a musician?

Following a five alarm house fire which completely destroyed my family’s seven bedroom Victorian house in North East Philadelphia, I was introduced to the guitar by one of my mother’s short lived boyfriends named Chick – a Vietnam vet liberal type, who was very strange to have around. He played guitar and he knew I had an interest in playing guitar. He had me answer an ad in the paper where someone was giving away a Gibson 1970 ES335 only to someone who really wanted it. I was already into punk at this point but when I called them and he asked me what music I was into, I said “music on the radio”. He didn’t give it to me, and I learned a lesson as an artist then about being true to myself.

An acoustic guitar showed up in my life and I would play with a quarter to get a distorted sound like the records my older brother listened to – Minor Threat and the Fall, etc – before I knew what an electric guitar sounded like. And it didn’t take long for me to figure out that I didn’t have a choice in being a musician or not.

Formative shows:
Drexel University 1994 – Fugazi and Bikini Kill (age 12/13, had to sneak out of the house)
Chocadaro 1995 – Spiritualized (Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space tour [only live lineup that mattered])
Haverford College 1995 – Stereolab (oddly enough they showed me how heavy a band could be)
Philadelphia 13thand South Street 1997 – Nation of Ulysses and Circus Lupis (right before they went on, cops showed up on horses and a riot began – I saw the rescheduled show a week later)
Middlesex Community College 1997 – Born Against
Berlin 1998 – Love Parade (where to start, Berlin in general)

List of formative bands I was in:
Disregard
Frail
Switched On
Mandela Strike Force (which turned into Ink and Dagger)

You were in The Icarus Line between the years 2003 – 2006, and played on Penance Soiree, Black Presents, and Black Lives At The Golden Coast. What is your proudest memory of this period, and if you could do it all over again, what would you do differently?

There was short lived period where the band slayed after the release of Penance Soiree. I developed a relationship with Los Angeles during these years that developed into a huge part of my life. Alvin, Captain, Joe, Aaron, Monica – when everybody was healthy and coherent, it was a pretty incredible crew to be around. The tour with Primal Scream – the Manny and Kevin Shields lineup – was a privilege to be involved with on a daily basis. But as a much beloved author of this crew fondly said: “No regrets, no reunions”.

What’s your favourite memory of Alvin Deguzman that you’d like to share?

Alvin was easily the most dependable person involved in the band. A total sweetheart that just wanted to please and be involved and be part of the gang. When his inhibitions were lifted by not mimicking parts, he had a strength in his wrist and hands that was fascinating to watch.

You started out in 1993 in the straight edge hardcore band, Frail. Given that you were only around 15 at the time, and now that you’re about 40, how do you think you’ve evolved musically over the years?

Incredibly – every year that goes by is another year that it intensifies. I’m lucky enough to have another 40 years to develop even further. The specifics within that are so numerous it’s hard to pinpoint. I’ve never for one second stopped being a professional artist, constantly developing.

According to Wikipaedia, you’ve been associated with 14 musical acts. What’s the main reason for such a high number? And going forward, which band would you most like to work with and why?

Because I’ve been very fortunate I will hopefully work with a lot more. That number 14 is off by many.

How do you think the musical climate has changed over the years – particularly for underground rock bands? At the same time, what tips would you give to musicians and bands starting out today?

I don’t think much. Some people would say technology changed everything but I don’t think so. If you take it outside of traditional rock music there would be a lot I could say. But I don’t take traditional rock music itself seriously because there aren’t many serious rock musicians – with a few exceptions.

Tips to musicians? As I often say about most of my artistic counterparts in Los Angeles, or anywhere for that matter, you have to have a style before you can have any fashion. And if you don’t, there’s no hiding it.

Now that you’re practically middle age, what’s the biggest lesson that life has ever taught you?

It took me till my late 20’s before I learned how to clean. And a lot of things came with that.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time, and when it’s all over, what kind of a legacy would you like to leave?

Hopefully 10 years further than I was 10 years before. And I’m not talking legacies yet.

Thank you!
The post Interview with Don Devore first appeared on The Icarus Line.

Travis Keller is releasing a new zine next week called Stay Alive. He’s also looking to release a “Best of Buddyhead” book, as detailed via his really good interview with Illustrious Words. Hopefully the book lives up to expectations and is in the same league as We Owe You Nothing: “Punk Planet” – the Collected Interviews.

Knocked it halfway up onto the curb, and then split. Hit and run. I actually feel sorry for whoever it is, because they obviously have no idea how good my lawyer is. His name is Jack Doff, and he’ll have this whole thing sorted in a snap. If any of you are on the lookout for a helping hand in this field, I strongly recommend Jack. Anyone who’s ever hired him will tell you the same thing, “Don’t get screwed, get Jack Doff.” Honestly, my entire life has changed since I got Jack Doff.

After Don Devore’s exit from The Icarus Line, Jason DeCorse was drafted in, and worked with the new configuration of the band between the years 2007 – 2012. Whilst only appearing on one studio album, the band’s fourth – Wildlife, Jason DeCorse (along with fellow guitarist James Striff) took the band in a more blues-orientated direction. With the band now dissolved, I got to ask Mr DeCorse on his time within the band, as well as what he intends to do next. Enjoy!

Given your Quechan Indian Nation heritage, and having read Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee (Dee Brown), how has your ancestry affected your world view – not only in helping you to formulate your identity to become the man that you are, but also in helping you reconcile your views in a predominantly Western world?

It would be ignorant of me not to acknowledge my Western side. This mix makes me who I am.

How were you introduced to rock music, and what made you decide to become a musician? At the same time, what made you consider the guitar as your primary instrument of choice? How did your friends and family react to your decision? And if you weren’t a guitarist, what other artistic pursuit would you have considered pursuing professionally?

My parents were playing records and doing drugs and going to rock concerts before and after I was around. I started with the trombone at 10. Guitars were already around the house… If not guitar, I would have wanted to breakdance.

You’ve been associated with several bands over the course of your lifetime. What band / album would you recommend that fans of The Icarus Line should check out? Why?

Greyhound Soul from Tucson, Arizona. I’ve been with these guys since 1994. Like Joe Cardamone, Joe Peno of Greyhound Soul is unique and one of a kind. As a frontman, he’s kind of like a Johnny Cash or Neil Young.

You’ve performed and recorded with a number of notable musicians, but which eminent musical artist would you most like to collaborate with and why?

I would love to work with Joe Cardamone again. We always had great chemistry.

What is your fondest memory of Alvin Deguzman?

Alvin got lost in France once whilst driving two hours in the wrong direction. I was asleep in the back. Joe was so mad we were lost, and couldn’t stand the fact that I was sleeping through it. “Someone wake up the Indian”…

What is your favourite region that you have ever toured and what was it about the place that made it so memorable? At the same time, what is the most outrageous thing you have ever experienced whilst on the road?

I loved touring England with The Icarus Line. People loved coming to check us out. Lots of friends in the UK. All the outrageous stuff would have Jeff Watson in it.

What is your most memorable experience within The Icarus Line? At the same time, how do you think you were able to leave your stamp on The Icarus Line whilst also contributing towards the band’s legacy?

I have so many memories of The Icarus Line… I really don’t have a favorite… I had the best time every time! I think I was around when the band sounded at its best. I wish I could write as prolifically as Joe.

You’re a music teacher at the Rockacademy. As a proficient guitarist, what tips would you give to someone who is thinking of learning guitar?

My tips for guitar? Have fun doing it – get lost in it. You should love music rather than trying to figure it out.

A lot of people are lamenting the state of the music industry and are arguing that rock music is dead. At the same time, musicians such as Joe Cardamone and John Frusciante have shied away from rock music, and are opting for a sound that veers more towards electronica. What is your take on the state of rock music today, the scene itself, and how these fit within the context of the internet as well as the industry as a whole? What advice would you give to musicians and bands starting out within the context of this?

Music is a tough business to crack. There are so many bands, it’s hard to tell what’s special. Right now, we are in uncharted territory…

What are your future plans, and musically speaking, what else do you have in the pipeline?

My daughter is 8 years old, and I am expecting a boy in March. Currently, I’m making a funk album.
The post Interview with Jason DeCorse first appeared on The Icarus Line.

Another week, and another scenester update. So here goes…

Joe Cardamone has added a few more dates to his European excursion. His tour dates are now as follows:
08 Nov – 11 Nov – Le Guess Who? 2018, Utrecht (Netherlands)
17 Nov – The Joiners, Southampton (UK) *main support to The Primitives
18 Nov – Shacklewell Arms, London (UK)
19 Nov – Supersonic, Paris (France)

Travis Keller recently wrote for Kerrang, and got to reminisce about certain photos that were featured in his recently released Past Lives photo zine. You can check out the full article here.

Don Devore (as part of his band, Collapsing Scenery) will be playing the following dates in the USA:
08 Nov – H0L0, New York (US)
09 Nov – Ortlieb’s, Philadelphia (US)

Collapsing Scenery also released a new video recently, which got a write-up at Galore. You can check it out below:

This might be a bit of a slight oldie, but Michael Grodner (director of The Icarus Line Must Die) gave a fairly comprehensive interview with Popcorn Talk. Check out what he had to say below:
