A film was made based on his book and in 2011 he gave a TED talk about he experiences with role playing games in the classroom. Watching this video on the thirty plus years that he has been using interactive games to teach, I can't help but to feel like I missed out in my own education; I would have loved to play this game as a fourth grader. Even now, I am tempted to use one of those role playing games and see what I can learn. Enjoy!

The cost of the training program is about $400.00 for one year, includes 44 modules and is available in Spanish, Portuguese, French and Mandarin. Since it was the Mexican government paying the bill, I took the course in Spanish. It was a wonderful opportunity that I put to good use as I was starting up my small, eco-business.

Now, I am back at Harvard, so to say, taking the Harvard Edx computer science class taught by David Malan, called CS50x. A perfect example of a massive open online courses, the class started in October 2012 and ends in April 2013. I am just one of the thousands of students who have enrolled world wide, so far there are 155,000 students enrolled in the course according to Harvard Magazine, http://harvardmagazine.com/2012/11/classroom-in-the-cloud

I have been working on my very first assignment, to create a program using Scratch, scratch.mit.edu. While the students at Harvard take advantage of in person walk throughs and office hours, Edx students have recorded walk throughs and access to chat rooms and online support groups. I am also fortunate enough to have friend Mark Emmer mentor my computer science learning in lieu of the in person support that on campus students receive. Mark has also enrolled in the course, to help me through the weeks ahead.
With so many ideologies, religions, ways of thinking, someone's hero can be another person's nemesis. The media plays a large role in the way people percieve who is a hero and who is a criminal. A current example of this hero/nemesis identity placed on one person: Julian Assange. Julian Assange is the founder of wikileaks.org and at the center of much contraversy as to the role of media in international politics and the world in general. Here is a video of a recent discussion between Julian Assage, philosopher Slavoj Zizek and American journalist, Amy Goodman at the Frontline Club in London.

What do you think about the role of journalists in today's world and how does that role relate to what "we" consider to be a hero? Leave your comments below!

“They indicated that improving mathematics and science education ranked next to national security…”

This is my contribution.

Open education as a movement has been principally motivated by true humanists; individuals who strive for the betterment of themselves and their fellows. It is an egalitarian based concept: provide access to education for even those who can't afford it. The followers of the Church of Later Day Saints have for years used educational projects as "a way for virtually everyone to help provide education for those without resources, enabling them to rise out of poverty." (Carmack, J.) Open education takes these types of religiously motivated projects a step further. Open education provides education for all regardless of religious believes or affiliations. It is still limited in the sense that many of the open education resources are not available in a variety of languages (many of the largest projects are in English) but the idea of education as a human right is at the heart of the movement. As Tomaskevi points out "problems in guaranteeing free and compulsory education all children revolve around funding" and money and the lack of it continues to be an issue even when education is "free" on the Internet.
Freeing educational resources from the constraints of financial limitations is idealistic for sure, just as providing free education is idealistic but this is the heart open education. Open education is also for some the "key to enabling other innovations and catalyzing improvements in the quality, accountability, affordability and accessibility of higher education." (Wiley, D.)
There is no question that deficiencies exist in education the world over. The open education movement can be (and is trying to be) a cure for these deficiencies. Outside of the developed countries where open education is being pioneered, it can be difficult for someone to understand the motivations behind the open education movement. The reason is simple: cultural perspective. In Latin America open education is limited to what other countries "export" to the region and it is a precious few who are familiar with the concept. Regardless open education continues to be a movement fueled by those who want to make the world a better place. And this, in my book, makes the entire journey worth while.
On this first quest of the Introduction to Open Education, we have been asked to right a brief post on the history of the movement of open education.
The concept of open education is essentially the long fought battle of freedom vs. control. Access to education (and knowledge) has been an age old tug of war in every human culture and society. Often controlled and manipulated by the few, open education resource "movement" is yet another attempt to free education from class or religious constraints.
With that said, I consulted the following sources as I began this quest for a historical background on Open Education:
Giving Knowledge for Free: The Emergence of Open Educational Resources
Open Educational Resources- Opportunities and Challenges for Higher Education
OER Handbook for Educators
These aforementioned texts show how open educational resources are a part of an educational evolution. From the ancient Greek Lyceum, to independent learning methods where the figure of the student is replaced and becomes an active participant in the creation of his/her knowledge acquisition, how we educated and are educated is limited only by our own imaginations. It seems clear to me that the history of open education is only a chapter in a much bigger book of how humans learn and teach; a book of educational history. The methods are essentially the same; it is the tools that change. Instead of going to a school to hear a teacher lecture, you go to your computer and interact with peers and educators and begin to acquire the knowledge that interests you. Sadly though, as history has often shown us, education is reserved for those who have the economic possibilities to access it. Open educational resources are all good and well, and how they have come about is fascinating, but what does all this mean to those who don't have a computer let alone electricity in their homes or communities? I live in what first world countries call "a developing country" and the reality is that many people are lacking the basics and the basics are still needed in order to use open educational resources. If history repeats itself, as I sadly think it will, open educational resources will be like a mirage in the dessert for so many individuals. A glimmering view of what they need but in reality a stark empty space of what they don't have.
