Project Alfie

2012-02-26T12:47:00.000-05:00

Project Alfie is a English soul singer/ songwriter who is wildly reminiscent of a 1960's lounge singer (think Frank Sinatra or Sammy Davis, Jr.), but with a modern flare to it. He is heavily inspired by both the 60's and Hip Hop cultures and it shows in every facet of his brand. Taking from the Hip-Hop influence, he has created and released a self-titled mixtape in which he sampled various rappers including Nas, Kanye West and Jay-Z. His superb talent and hard work afforded him the rare opportunity to be featured on Universal Records' Compilation R&B Collection 2012. He is the first ever unsigned artist to be featured on the compilation. He recently returned home from New York City, where he worked with the Hitmen production team on his debut release album. He is also working on several tracks with Hip Hop artist Sway. This is not the last time you are going to be hearing from Project Alfie. I foresee 2012 is going to be his year. You can download the Project Alfie Mixtape here. Also, check out the official video for the track "Beggin", which samples Jay-Z's Dead Presidents, below.

S. Dot

2012-01-29T12:34:00.000-05:00

There aren't many artists who from South Carolina that are still relevant. I can immediately think of two, Blind Fury and Angie Stone. What South Carolina needs is an artist that can put the state on the map and keep it relevant. Richard "S. Dot" Steward could just be the one to do that. He has raw talent and can keep southern Hip Hop in the forefront. His mixtape 'Can't Sell Dope Forever', has a positive vibe, starting from the title, and it trickles down through every track. You aren't going to hear what has become the norm for rap from S. Dot. There is true depth in his rhymes and by listening to each song, you can feel his joys, his pains, his struggles and his determination.

The production on each track is pretty dope too. Each track reminds you of a different artist from a different region in the country. There's a West Coast infused track, a Southern, Louisiana early Cash Money or No Limit track (he is originally from Louisiana, so there's homage being paid) as well as an East Coast track. This guy is versatile and has nowhere to go but up. Check out his video for 'How U Luv Dat' below.

Mark my words, this guy is going to be a star! He has the look, the talent, he's the total package. An 18 year-old from Atlanta, he is just starting out in the business, but from the videos posted on his Youtube channel, he won't be unknown for long. He is being highly praised for his rendition of 'Player's Prayer' by Lloyd, and with good reason. His voice is easily comparable with Lloyd. He has done several other covers as well. He has a cover of Frank Ocean's 'Thinkin' Bout You', as well as 'How To Love' by Lil Wayne, which, in my opinion, was MUCH better than Lil Wayne's singing. I'm just saying. Check out his Youtube channel here. Please take a second to listen to the 'Player's Prayer' cover below, and don't forget this name. You'll regret it later if you do!

Kevin Ross

2012-01-16T19:14:00.001-05:00

Kevin Ross is a 24 year-old Washington, DC native singer who's on the come up. I chose him because he gives off a mature gentleman vibe, not the sexed up, disrespectful male perfumer that we have been forced to deal with over the years. He is a trained vocalist and performer, as well as a recent graduate of Berklee College of Music, with a degree in songwriting. He has been compared to legends like Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway, which is definitely a fair comparison.

He now lives in Atlanta, works as a songwriter, and has a publishing deal with Kon Live. Kevin has worked with artists like Jaime Foxx, Usher and Akon, and was named "Best New Artist" by AOL Music. He has also won the award for "Best Male Artist" at the 2009 DMV Entertainment Music Awards. Take a look at the video for his single "So Incredible" below.

Kris Lamans & Marva King

2012-01-11T09:24:00.000-05:00

I love when an artist from the past comes back and shows the young boys how it's done. This exactly what Kris Lamans, formally of The world-famous Platters, has done. His new single, "Close To You", is mature enough to capture the mature crowd, yet young-sounding enough to have the young crowd mentioning his name.

Since he parted from The Platters, Mr. Lamans has been busy. He has been directing and acting, starring in such films as "Melinda", "The Evil Altar", and "One of the Missing". He has also been a high school speech and drama teacher, as well as program director for Lamar University. Additionally, he is a former news and weather anchor for KBMT TV in Beaumont, TX. He has three companies he created under his belt as well. He has Focen Network, Inc., which is the main holding company for Kris Lamans Productions, LLC (home to numerous film and television projects) and Pearl Records. Named after his mother, it is currently home of artists Lisa Rine and Marva King. Obviously, the entertainment business has never been too far away from him! Take a second to listen to "Close To You" by clicking the link and downloading it here. Take a trip down memory lane and listen to The Platters perform "Unchained Melody":

From PRG/ Marvalous Works, comes Marva King. An actress and singer, best known for her role in the Tyler Perry's stage play Diary of a Mad Black Woman. She began singing gospel at the age of 13 in her hometown of Flint, Michigan. Since that time, she has worked with legends Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Chaka Kahn, Lenny Kravitz, Tupac Shakur and toured with Prince as a member of his New Power Generation. She has also released several albums and ep's. She debuted with the singles "Feels Right" and "Do You Want To Make Love" in 1981. Marva also released the album entitled "Do You Want To Make Love" in the same year. Throughout the 1980's and 1990's she released several albums and singles with the group Madagascar, Marva singing lead vocals. There have also been several albums and singles released post- Madagascar dating from the 1990's to today. With an incredible four-octave voice and look, she has released her latest single entitled "Steppin"featuring 90's singer Christopher Williams.

The song has the same feel-good step groove that was heard in the 2000's from R. Kelly with "Step In The Name of Love". In my opinion, this song is a classic and will be heard for years to come. To download "Steppin" click here. Listen to her perform one of her hits "Sistah" below.

Purple St. James (Yazarah)

2012-01-07T22:43:00.001-05:00

Yazarah is an eclectic singer/songwriter with her own production company who, in my opinion, can't be placed into a genre. Her sound is a mix between Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Solange, En Vogue and a few other people put together in this melting pot. Classically trained, Yazarah (born Dana Nicole Williams), sang backup for Erykah Badu on her Mama's Gun tour. She decided to leave the tour in 2001 to work on her own career. Since that time, she has performed with artists including Raheem Devaughn, Floetry, Rahsaan Paterson, Goapele and Chaka Kahn.

Every track that I have heard from the Washington, DC native has a good feel to it. There is a song for every mood, every person. Her voice is different from what you are used to hearing on the radio, and that's a great thing. She can best be described as a breath of fresh air for any music scene. Check out her video for "Love Come Save The Day" below or click here. There is also a video version of this song, however, I felt that she would make more of an impact with the acoustic version. Enjoy!

Bone Intell

2011-09-03T20:11:00.001-04:00

I can honestly say that Bone Intell is the last of a dying breed. He is really one of the very few people that I would say can bring real Hip Hop back. I don't mean the music only, but the culture in itself. Through his music, you can feel his passion for the art. It is refreshing to see someone who stays so true to himself without compromising his beliefs.

Originally from Buffalo, New York, Bone was born in the place Hip Hop originated from. He began rapping at the age of 12 and since then, has worked with acts such as Sonny Lewis, T-Pain, Koaz and Freddie Freeman to name a few. He's been on countless promotional tours, including DJ Kay Slay's Streetsweepers Sirius Satellite Radio Show. He continues to tour the Northeast region of the United States, as well as several countries worldwide. He has become a household name in those areas, and hopefully soon, he'll become a household name, period. Check out the video for his single "Body Language" below. Cherine

2011-04-29T23:25:00.000-04:00

Cherine Anderson is a Reggae artist originally from Kingston, Jamaica. The reason I chose to feature her is because although I have Caribbean blood running through my veins and I love my island and culture, I am not the biggest Reggae fan in the world. There are a few artists or songs that an grab my attention, and Cherine is one of them. When I heard her song "Rebel", I was instantly hooked. I can see this track becoming my new get-ready-for-the-club anthem. It is very mellow yet you can still get hyped to it. How many tracks do you know can do that?? She also gets massive respect from me because before she even put an album out, she collaborated on OFFICIAL remixes with industry legends such as Madonna, and get this... PAUL MCCARTNEY!!!! Please check her out ASAP. This girl needs to blow up in the states NOW! Check her out at http://www.reverbnation.com/cherineanderson. Check her video below for "Redemption Songs":

Struggle Since Turner Prince (SSTP) is a hiphop group from the Princeville and Tarboro areas in North Carolina. The group's name was derived from a freed slave name Richard Turner Prince who was born into slavery in 1843. Jarryd Fillmore

Jarryd Fillmore is one of my new favorites. He is an acoustic/ blues/ folk singer from Ontario, Canada. He has a very pure voice that doesn't need heavy background music, vocals and production. His guitar is the perfect match for his soothing voice.

On tracks like "Long Days and Longer Nights", the passion is felt from beginning to end. He reminds me of an early John Mayer. I could definitely see him covering some Ray Charles or Donny Hathaway. 7/27

2011-04-04T09:45:00.000-04:00

7/27 is a Hip Hop/ R&B duo representing Nashville, NC. They fuse a healthy blend of Neo Soul and real Hip Hop, which is such a rarity these days.

Young Nell (rapper), lists some of his influences as Big L, Cassidy and Nas. These influences can be heard throughout his verses. He's what the game has been missing for a while. He gets much respect from me for that. As for Kiarya B. (singer), she has an eclectic voice, that is able to adapt to any melody. She lists her influences as Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill and SWV, all very powerful voices.

Their current single "Disconnect", a track off of their promo LP entitled "Road to Success", was played on the Independent Spotlight on local radio station Foxy 99 and voted #1 requested song.

1 Adoff

2011-03-13T19:37:00.000-04:00

Harry Golden once said “The only thing that overcomes hard luck is hard work”, and this couldn’t be truer for Orlando, Florida native 1 Adoff. Raised in the Griffin Park Housing Projects, he was no stranger to violence and adversity. Between two jail stints, one lasted from 1990 to 2006, being sold dreams by multiple record labels would have been enough to discourage anyone. Yet through it all, he was able to release an album entitled “Shit Sho Shady” at the age of 18 and has subsequently created a collection of his music independently that have become street classics.

Now there is nowhere for this man to go but up. With some heavy hitters in the music industry like Jay Henchman, Bigga Rankin, Tony Neal of the Core DJ’s and J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League to name a few backing him up, 1 Adoff’s perseverance and drive are sure to pay off this time.

There is heavy anticipation for his latest album entitled Dopeboyz Motivation is scheduled for a release of March 20, 2011. If you can’t wait until then though, check out some of his earlier releases such as “Living In The Ghetto”, and “Housing Authority” available on http://www.reverbnation.com/#!/1adoff.

Willie J

2011-03-09T10:54:00.001-05:00

This is another one of the few indie artists who gets much respect from me. To date, his third mixtape, "Before My Heart Stops", has had over 900,000 downloads since his November 6, 2010 release. That's the epitome of hustle to me.
The Washington Park/ East Saint Louis, Illinois native came from a churchgoing family, where he developed a penchant for the drums, as well as songwriting and composing. He wrote his first song at 12, and subsequently caught the eye of two magazines for his percussion talents. Both 'Modern Drummer' and 'Drum Magazine' have done features on him.
Since that time, he has opened for artists ranging from Sean Paul of the Youngbloodz to New Edition. He has also opened for Marques Houston and Hip Hop legend DJ Quik at The House of Blues in Los Angeles.
In addition to his music, Willie J is also a published author. His book, "The Crying Songbird" has been said to be a positive influence on the inmates of Connecticut's prisons. He has been asked by these prisons to speak and spread the word of inspiration to inmates. His book is available in all major bookstores nationwide.
"Before My Heart Stops" as well as his two prior mixtapes, are available on http://www.coast2coastdjs.com/. Three of my favorite tracks from the mixtape, "Before My Heart Stops", "Comin' In", and "I'm Ready" are really worth the listen.

King Twins

2011-03-07T09:57:00.000-05:00

King Twins are a Charlotte duo that is ready to make a name for themselves in the southern rap game. Dice King and Duce King are very versatile in their rhymes. The track “Fam Love” samples Dionne Farris’ “Hopeless” melody. The music and their rhymes go together well. I can definitely seeing this song becoming an underground classic. Another track that I liked was “Like The Switch”. It sounds like Midwest rapper Huey spitting over a Dirty South beat, and once again, it works.

With two mixtapes (“Cookin’ Up Carols” and “Love Jones”) under their belts, they are gearing up to release “March Madness: Loaded 2 The Brim” soon. Please be on the lookout for these guys. They do not disappoint.

Both mixtapes are available on http://www.datpiff.com/. Follow them on Twitter: www.twitter.com/kingtwins

Prettier Than Matt

2011-03-04T12:44:00.001-05:00

This is Prettier than Matt. They are a kick ass folk/rock duo from Columbia, South Carolina that is taking the region by storm. Their covers of "Sittin On The (Dock of The Bay)" and "Dream A Little Dream", their original songs "Miss You" (which happens to be one of my personal favorites), and "No More Tears", are very classic and soothing. The main singer, Jessica Skinner, who also doubles on the ukulele, has a Mama Cass-like voice. There is an old soul in this Erskine College graduate's vocals. As for Jeff Pitts, he is the front man for the band Deleveled and shares vocals as well as guitarist of Prettier than Matt. He balances the group out well with his rock feel to Jessica's folk sound.

Currently, "No More Tears" can be heard on youtube, and "Miss You", which the video is being shot for, is available on itunes. They are currently working on their debut album, which has an expected release date of fourth quarter 2011. First Fall

2011-02-22T21:39:00.001-05:00

When I look for artists to write about, there are several components I look for. First, there has to be drive. I’m not going to help a musician who doesn’t help themselves. Next, I look for originality. Finally, I absolutely must see and hear talent. These guys have all of that and more. First Fall is a quintet representing Southern California. David Larrea, Joe Esparza, Gerardo Cisneros, Marvin Espinoza, and Adam Coronado are the members of the group that was founded in 2007. Since that time, they have performed at places like the Miami Music Festival in 2009 with RCA artists 2AM Club and Jared Evan and Los Angeles House of Blues on Sunset Boulevard.

One of the interesting things about First Fall is that their genre of music is really an undefined one. They infuse a very healthy blend of rock, alternative, blues and jazz. With an eclectic style, their debut EP, Tunnels, is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Adding a special touch, percussionist extraordinaire Alex Acuña, who is widely known for being a session player for major acts and was member of the 70’s jazz-fusion group Weather Report, was gracious enough to lend his talents as a special contribution to the EP. How awesome is that?!? The EP was mainly recorded at the Tabernacle Sound Lab, with fine tuning by producer Hugo Larrea and mixed by Tim Palmer, whose roster of collaborations include U2, Pearl Jam and Jason Mraz, as well as Grammy award winning mixer Benny Faccone, who has worked with Lou Rawls and Billy Paul, to name a few.

Tunnels is scheduled for a May release and will be available on the bands official site, as well as www.amazon.com, www.rhapsody.com and www.itunes.com. The video for their single “Inside Out,” produced by Antonio Lozano, is posted below; prepare to be blown away!

Afromotive is a self described multi-ethnic group from Asheville, NC. Their music infuses African and dance beats and forms an amazing sound. I must admit that I've never been a fan of African music, but these guys just might have changed my mind.

The song "Simbo" is rather infectious. The drum solo is absolutely AMAZING. While I'm not sure what the lyrics are, it really doesn't matter because the beat is awesome. The dejembe player in the group, Adama Dembele, is a thirty-third generation player and hails from Ivory Coast, West Africa.
