Maul: Shadow Lord, Episode 2 Title: Chapter 2: Sinister Schemes Air date: April 6, 2026 Director: Saul Ruiz Writer: Matt Michnovetz Summary: Lawson and the TDF chase Maul’s crew through Janix, while Jedi master Eeko-Dio Daki tries to save Devon. Maul escapes to his hideout, imprisons Vario and Devon, and starts working Devon psychologically, arguing that the Jedi failed her and the galaxy has changed. Lawson, stretched thin and pressured from above, digs for intel through criminal contacts. At the same time, Vario suggests hitting a Pyke shipment to bait out Marg Krim, and Maul carries out the attack himself.

Nolan and Oliver help Mark recover over two months after Conquest’s death, while Allen and Zoe are rescued by Space Racer. Thragg responds by launching a direct assault on Talescria, aided by a traitor inside the planet’s defenses. Mark returns in time to help repel the attack, and the episode ends with Thaedus planning a strike on Viltrum before the scattered Viltrumites can regroup.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Season 2, Episode 6 Title: Requiem Air date: April 3, 2026 Director: Jeff F. King Writer: Maria Melnik Summary: The episode fills in key timeline gaps around Hiroshi and Kentaro’s time at the Apex station on Skull Island. Hiroshi explains how his 2014 trip to Alaska led him through Axis Mundi and out into Africa in 2015. In the present, Hiroshi’s funeral brings the family together, though Kentaro lashes out at Cate over his father’s death. Shaw, Keiko, and Cate reconnect with Dr. Suzuki, who explains the rebuilt Titan lure, and Shaw begins plotting to summon Godzilla to take on Titan X. Kentaro, shaken and drifting, accepts a job offer from Apex.

Wells Summary: Dex targets AVTF officers and sets his sights on Fisk, hoping to make up for killing Foggy Nelson. Matt investigates the diner killings, tracks Dex to his apartment, and tries to stop him from turning Fisk into a martyr. Meanwhile, Fisk’s political and criminal worlds tighten together as Vanessa works the governor, Page and McDuffie chase testimony tied to the Northern Star, and Buck Cashman kills a key witness. The episode builds to a violent showdown at Fogwell’s Gym, where Vanessa shoots Dex, Daredevil intervenes, and a shard from a shattered ornament leaves Vanessa bleeding and collapsing.

Sage and Ashley move quickly to spin the fallout while Hughie, M.M., and Frenchie face execution in a prison camp. Butcher reunites with Annie and Kimiko to mount a rescue, eventually escaping through a tunnel created by a Supe called The Worm. The episode ends with A-Train saving Hughie, only to be hunted down and killed by Homelander.

The Boys, Season 5, Episode 2 Title: Teenage Kix Air date: April 8, 2026 Director: Shana Stein Writer: Jessica Chou Summary: Butcher takes the team to a lab run with Dr. Sameer Shah and plans to test the anti-Supe virus on Rock-Hard of Teenage Kix. Homelander, meanwhile, wakes Soldier Boy and sends him after Butcher in exchange for clearing his name. The virus mission spirals when Soldier Boy and members of Teenage Kix get involved, leading to a confrontation at the base. Frenchie unleashes the virus, killing Jetstreak, Soldier Boy, and Rock-Hard, while Ashley refuses the call for open rebellion against Homelander.

For the movie-date standoff, the official release date for both Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday is still December 18, 2026. Warner’s Dune: Part Three is positioned for IMAX, while Marvel’s own official page still lists Avengers: Doomsday on December 18 as well. There is current reporting that Marvel may be considering a move, but that appears to be rumor/reporting territory, not official confirmation yet. Based on the IMAX angle alone, my best bet is Marvel/Disney moves first, not WB.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (Apple TV)

Season 2, Episode 5 Title: Furusato Air date: March 27, 2026 Director: Jeff F. King Writer: Andrew Colville Summary: In 2017, Hiroshi clashes with Keiko and Shaw after learning about their affair. Brenda, May, and Trissop lead an Apex team to Santa Soledad, while Cate, Kentaro, Hiroshi, Keiko, and Shaw pursue them and take shelter in the abandoned Monarch Outpost 27. Hiroshi and Keiko reconcile, Tim redirects Outpost 18 toward the island, Titan X appears, and Shaw realizes Apex may want to weaponize Titans rather than pacify them. Titan X’s arrival stirs up the island’s Scarabs, injures Shaw, and seems to exert a strange pull on Cate as it emerges.

Nolan tries to make amends with Debbie, Allen recruits Tech Jacket, and Oliver insists on coming along. After saying goodbye, Mark and the group depart for Talescria, only to be ambushed by a Viltrumite ship led by Conquest, Lucan, and Kradd. The fight turns brutal, ending with Mark killing Conquest, while Thaedus decides the time has come for open war against the Viltrumites.

Season 2, Episode 1 Title: The Northern Star Air date: March 24, 2026 Directors: Aaron Moorhead & Justin Benson Writer: Dario Scardapane Summary: Matt Murdock, back as Daredevil, infiltrates the Northern Star, a cargo ship moving military-grade weapons tied to Fisk’s Red Hook operation. CIA operative Mr. Charles works to protect Fisk’s anti-vigilante agenda, while Matt and Karen quietly work against him. Heather Glenn is drawn into Fisk’s orbit, Cherry is attacked, and Matt is ultimately unmasked by AVTF officers before Dex intervenes. 

Season 2, Episode 2 Title: Shoot the Moon Air date: March 31, 2026 Directors: Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead Writer: Dario Scardapane Summary: Cherry escapes the hospital before the AVTF can reach him, while Fisk puts out a missing-person warrant for Matt, making it dangerous for him to operate in either identity. Angela seeks help through Kirsten McDuffie and retrieves Hector Ayala’s amulet, BB escalates her anti-Fisk smear campaign, Vanessa grows increasingly uneasy about Dex, and Matt and Karen are attacked at Josie’s, where Karen reveals she has taken one of the officers hostage. 

Season 2, Episode 3 Title: The Scales & the Sword Air date: March 31, 2026 Director: Solvan “Slick” Naim Writer: Heather Bellson Summary: The captive officer gives Matt and Karen access to Red Hook, and they leak a charter that could strip Fisk’s authority there. McDuffie learns Fisk had framed Duquesne after he refused to support the Red Hook project, but the courts still convict him. Daredevil breaks into Red Hook expecting to destroy weapons and instead finds Fisk’s prison holding political enemies, leading to a prison break with help from Duquesne, Karen, and Angela, while Fisk escalates public fear by having the AVTF kill the Northern Star night crew.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (AppleTV)

Season 2, Episode 4 Title: Trespass Air date: March 20, 2026  Director: Hiromi Kamata  Writer: Al Letson  Summary: In 2017, Titan X awakens another swarm of Scarabs in American Samoa, which kill two surfers, and destroys a Monarch patrol boat. On Outpost 18, Trissop and Tim detect Titan X on Apex’s new sonar tracking system, which indicates that it is heading towards San Francisco. Kentaro, Hiroshi, Keiko and Shaw meet up with May in Pensacola, Florida, where they plan to steal Hiroshi’s Titan lure back from Apex. In San Francisco, an evacuation is declared, while Cate meets one of the students who she saved on G-Day. She has a change of heart, and decides to return to Monarch. Trissop’s team leave Outpost 18 as Tim’s team and the Pacific Fleet prepare to intercept Titan X, but the signal on Apex’s tracking system turns out to be a whale. In Pensacola, the others infiltrate Apex’s headquarters and discover that Apex have been smuggling creatures off of Skull Island, including Leafwings, Needlewalkers, and Vinestranglers. Brenda shows May that Apex have developed neural implants to modify animal behavior, which she demonstrates using a Leafwing, and explains that they want to use the same technology to pacify the Titans. Shaw and Kentaro release the Needlewalkers to cause a distraction, allowing Hiroshi and Keiko to find the lure, but it has been dismantled. Fortunately, they also discover that Apex have some of Bill’s old files, including his map of Titan X’s migratory route, which allows them to predict its next destination as Santa Soledad. May chooses to stay with Apex, but the others escape and reunite with Cate. However, Hiroshi finds Keiko’s letter to Shaw in Bill’s files. Featured cast: Anna Sawai as Cate Randa, Kiersey Clemons as May, Ren Watabe as Kentaro Randa, Mari Yamamoto as Keiko Miura, Joe Tippett as Tim, Takehiro Hira as Hiroshi Randa, and Kurt Russell / Wyatt Russell as Lee Shaw. The series also stars Elisa Lasowski.

Season 4, Episode 1 Title: Making the World a Better Place Air date: March 18, 2026  Director: Sol Choi  Writer: Helen Leigh  Summary: Mark, Oliver, and Eve continue stopping threats while dealing with the physical and mental aftermath of Angstrom and Conquest. Cecil appoints Brit as leader of the Guardians and brings the Teen Team back. Mark meets Dinosaurus, a powerful being he nearly kills despite learning the creature’s human host lacks control in his transformed state. Mark and Eve have a difficult dinner with Eve’s parents. Meanwhile, the Sequids prepare another invasion, and an alien named Universa arrives on Earth, draining energy from a power plant to save her people. Mark and Eve intercept her, and Eve struggles as her powers become unstable during the fight, but Universa is eventually defeated. The Guardians confront the Sequid threat, and with Mark’s help, they save all infected civilians using new technology, though Mark kills Rus Livingston, the final host, to end the danger. Elsewhere, Conquest escapes captivity and leaves Earth. Featured cast: Steven Yeun as Mark Grayson, J.K. Simmons as Omni-Man, Sandra Oh as Debbie Grayson, Gillian Jacobs as Atom Eve, Walton Goggins as Cecil, Max Burkholder as Oliver, Seth Rogen as Allen the Alien, with season additions including Matthew Rhys as Dinosaurus and Danai Gurira as Universa. 

Season 4, Episode 2 Title: I’ll Give You the Grand Tour Air date: March 18, 2026  Director: Jason Zurek  Writer: Simon Racioppa  Summary: On the way to Talescria, Nolan tells Allen about his harsh Viltrumite upbringing, where he trained young cadets and endured a brutal trial against his parents to prove his adulthood. Soon after, the Scourge virus devastated the Viltrumites, killing billions, including his parents. The Grand Regent imposed a quarantine, sealed the planet, and ordered the extermination of all alien slaves who knew of the outbreak. The few survivors began seeking compatible species across the galaxy to preserve their race. On Talescria, Thaedus reveals he is the Betrayer who killed Emperor Argall. Using Nolan’s knowledge, the Coalition gathers weapons and allies like Space Racer and the Sinlak beetles. Thaedus later admits he created the Scourge virus and has an improved version. Though angered, Nolan agrees to recruit his son after Thaedus promises it will be a last resort. Meanwhile, Conquest returns to Viltrum and reports his failure to Grant Regent Thragg. Featured cast: Steven Yeun, J.K. Simmons, Seth Rogen, Peter Cullen as Thaedus, Winston Duke as Space Racer, and Lee Pace as Thragg. 

Season 4, Episode 3 Title: I Gotta Get Some Air Air date: March 18, 2026  Director: Stephanie Gonzaga  Writer: Ross Stracke  Summary: Machine Head tells Titan that Mister Liu survived and is pursuing them. Titan is attacked by Liu’s assassin Magnattack but kills him. Mark struggles with killing Rus, while Eve loses control of her powers. Robot expels a Sequid, which Monster Girl destroys, leading them to wonder whether Mark was right. Titan asks Invincible for help, but Mark and Eve send Oliver instead. Eve seeks guidance from Robot. Meanwhile, the Flaxans return and attack Earth, and Mark joins the Guardians in response. Oliver and Titan confront Liu, while Robot and Monster Girl enter the Flaxan dimension to destroy their anti-aging technology, discovering a highly advanced civilization that threatens humanity. Before others can follow, the portal is closed, trapping them. Mark later helps Oliver fight Liu, forcing him to retreat. Misinterpreting Titan’s actions, Mark attacks him until Oliver stops him. With Liu still active, Titan is forced to rejoin Machine Head’s Order, as Liu also returns. Eve learns she is pregnant. Featured cast: Steven Yeun, Gillian Jacobs, Zachary Quinto, Todd Williams as Titan, Jeffrey Donovan as Machine Head, and the returning Guardians/Flaxan players around the Earth attack storyline. Season 4, Episode 4 Title: Hurm Air date: March 25, 2026 Director: Ian Abando Writer: Robert Kirkman Summary: Mark confesses his actions to Art, who comforts him and gives him his old suit back. Eve calls Mark to stop Ka-Hor, but Damien Darkblood, attempting to reclaim Hell from Volcanikka, uses Nolan’s blood and accidentally summons Mark, allowing Ka-Hor to escape with a host. Darkblood explains that Volcanikka plans to release the Vile to conquer Earth. Mark and Darkblood recover Satan’s Molten Crown from Cerberus, restoring Satan’s power and reviving Darkblood’s family. They confront Volcanikka, who defeats Satan, but Mark overpowers her and forces her to retreat. Satan keeps the Vile imprisoned and sends Mark and Darkblood back to Earth. Eve tells William about her pregnancy, while Debbie plans to move in with Paul. As Eve prepares to tell Mark about the pregnancy, Nolan and Allen arrive. Meanwhile, Satan secretly orders Darkblood to investigate Volcanikka’s motives and considers going to the surface.The episode is also notable for using material created specifically for the show rather than directly adapting the comic. Featured cast: Steven Yeun as Mark Grayson, J.K. Simmons as Omni-Man, Sandra Oh as Debbie Grayson, and Brandon Scott Jones as William Clockwell.

Project Hail Mary (2026)

Summary: Ryland Grace wakes up alone aboard a spacecraft with no memory of who he is or why he is there, only to slowly realize he has been sent on a desperate mission to save Earth from an extinction-level threat. What starts as a survival mystery turns into a science-heavy, emotionally warm space adventure built around problem-solving, sacrifice, and an unexpected interstellar friendship.

Production Notes: The film was directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and adapted by Drew Goddard, who also wrote The Martian, giving this one a similar mix of hard-science problem solving, humor, and crowd-pleasing momentum.

Production shot in the United Kingdom, with principal photography running from June through October 2024, centered at Shepperton Studios. The movie’s cinematography was handled by Greig Fraser, with editing by Chris Dickens and Joel Negron, and music by Daniel Pemberton.

One of the big talking points around the movie is how heavily it leans on practical filmmaking. Lord and Miller said the production avoided green screens on set, relying instead on built environments, controlled lighting, puppetry, and VFX enhancement later. Rocky was brought to life through a combination of puppetry, animatronics, and digital effects, with James Ortiz both performing and voicing the character.

The approach clearly connected with audiences. The film opened to about $80.6 million domestic and roughly $141 million worldwide, making it Amazon MGM’s biggest opening and the biggest opening weekend of 2026 so far. It was also produced at blockbuster scale, with reporting placing the budget around $200 million net.

Dune: Part Three Trailer Reaction

Warner Bros. dropped the first teaser for Dune: Part Three on March 17, 2026, with the film set to hit theaters and IMAX on December 18, 2026. Early coverage highlights a 17-year time jump, the return of Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, and the debut of Robert Pattinson as Scytale. Director Denis Villeneuve has also described the third film as more tense, more muscular, and more thriller-driven than the previous two.

Episode 3, “Secrets,” premiered on March 13, 2026 as part of the show’s 10-episode second season, which runs weekly through May 1, 2026. Apple’s official episode logline is simple and ominous: “A buried secret is exposed.” Season 2 continues the Monsterverse story with Monarch’s fate hanging in the balance, buried truths resurfacing, and the looming threat of a titan event.

Apple TV+ Monsterverse series Season 2 premiered February 27, 2026

Episode 1: Cause and Effect Summary Season 2 opens with Monarch thrown into chaos by Keiko’s return after being presumed dead for decades. At the same time, Cate goes against orders to try to save Shaw, and that rescue effort helps unleash a dangerous new Titan. Broadly, the episode works as a reset button for the season: it reconnects the fractured cast, throws everyone back into crisis mode, and pushes the story deeper into Skull Island and the larger Titan threat.

Episode 2: Resonance Summary The second episode splits its tension between two fronts. Lee and Keiko investigate a secretive village tied to a cult-like devotion to a mysterious sea creature, while Cate runs into a deadly stowaway situation on the Monarch side of the story. Reviews and synopses describe the episode as expanding the threat beyond Skull Island, with a rogue Titan moving toward busy shipping lanes, so it feels less like setup and more like the season starting to flex its monster-muscle a bit.

Robert Carradine (1954–2026)

Robert Carradine, best known for his role as Lewis Skolnick in Revenge of the Nerds, has passed away.

Carradine was part of the legendary Carradine acting family, son of John Carradine and brother to David and Keith Carradine. While he built a long résumé in film and television, he became a generational touchstone for playing the underdog genius in the 1984 cult classic Revenge of the Nerds and its sequels.

Beyond that franchise, Carradine appeared in projects such as The Long Riders, Lizzie McGuire, King of the Nerds, and numerous television roles across decades. He embodied a very specific cinematic archetype: the smart outsider who eventually wins.

For an entire era of fandom, he helped make “nerd” aspirational.

We tip the pocket protector in respect.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – Season 1 Finale

Episode Title: ‘The Morrow’ Director: Sarah Adina Smith Writer: Ira Parker & Ti Mikkel Network: HBO

The Season 1 finale brings Ser Duncan the Tall and Egg’s first major Westerosi chapter to a close. Lyonel invites Dunk to move to Storm’s End, but Dunk believes that he brings only bad luck. Baelor’s body is cremated at his funeral. Dunk finds Valarr, who questions why his father died, but Dunk was left alive. Raymun reveals he has married the prostitute Rowan, alias Red. Maekar informs Dunk that Aerion will spend time in the Free Cities to atone. He laments that Baelor would have been a good king and invites Dunk to Summerhall, where Egg can be his squire; Dunk declines, which Egg overhears. In a flashback, Dunk asks Arlan why he was never knighted. Arlan retorts that a true knight always finishes a story. In the present, Daeron tells Dunk to mentor Egg to prevent him from becoming like Aerion. Egg discovers that his hair is regrowing. He takes a knife to Aerion’s bedroom, but Maekar calms him down. Dunk asks Maekar if Egg can squire for him on the road, but Maekar refuses. Raymun buys Sweetfoot back for Dunk, who then gifts her to Raymun. As Dunk leaves Ashford, Egg arrives, and they depart together. Egg suggests that they travel to Dorne. An angry Maekar later realizes that Egg is gone.

Robert Duvall was one of the defining American actors of the modern era. A founding member of the American Film Theatre movement and a classmate of Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman at the Neighborhood Playhouse, Duvall built a career on discipline, restraint, and volcanic presence.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (HBO Max)

Summary:

The trial of seven begins. In the first charge, Aerion knocks Dunk off his horse. In a series of flashbacks to Dunk’s childhood, he and his friend Rafe scavenge from a battlefield. They return to Flea Bottom in King’s Landing and pickpocket from Alester, a City Watchman. Dunk and Rafe attempt to buy passage to the Free Cities in Essos, but cannot afford it. Alester corners them and takes their money. Rafe steals Alester’s dagger, but he notices and slits her throat. Arlan emerges from a tavern and kills Alester, saving Dunk, who then follows Arlan on his travels. In the present, Dunk duels Aerion on foot until both men collapse from injury. After Dunk falls unconscious, Aerion declares him dead. Egg begs Dunk to get up, and the crowd chants for Dunk as he stands. Dunk and Aerion resume their duel until Dunk gets the upper hand. Aerion yields and withdraws his accusation. In the aftermath, Beesbury and Hardyng are confirmed as killed. Dunk pledges fealty to Baelor. Raymun and Pate help Baelor remove his helmet, which Maekar struck with his mace during the trial, revealing a fatal wound. Baelor collapses from his injury and dies in Dunk’s arms.

The jousting sequences are shot with brutal realism. Armor feels heavy. Impacts feel dangerous. The episode underscores a central thesis of Martin’s work: nobility is aspirational, not guaranteed.

In Memoriam: James Van Der Beek (1977–2026)

James Van Der Beek, the actor who became a defining face of late-1990s television as Dawson Leery on Dawson’s Creek, has died at age 48 after a short battle with an aggressive colorectal cancer. He passed peacefully on February 11, 2026, with his wife, Kimberly, and their six children by his side.

Van Der Beek’s breakout role on Dawson’s Creek helped shape a generation of teen storytelling on television, and the show’s honest exploration of adolescence made him a familiar presence to millions of viewers. After the series ran from 1998 to 2003, he continued working across television and film in a wide range of roles, from the high school football drama Varsity Blues to camera-savvy self-parody on Don’t Trust the B–– in Apartment 23 and crime procedurals like CSI: Cyber.

His candid sharing of his cancer journey in recent years also raised awareness of early-onset colorectal cancer. Friends, fans, and colleagues paid tribute to his warmth, humor, and impact both on and off screen. He is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and their six children, whose privacy the family has asked the public to respect during this time of mourning.

We celebrate James’s work, his openness, and the joy his performances brought to so many.

Brandon Sanderson’s Literary Fantasy Universe ‘Cosmere’ Picked Up by Apple TV (Exclusive)

Episode 1 – “Matinee” (Premiere)

Episode 1 introduces us to Simon Williams (played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), a struggling actor and stuntman whose career is in a tailspin. After being fired from a TV role and dumped by his girlfriend, Simon is at a crossroads. When he runs into Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley), a fellow actor with an eccentric reputation, he learns Slattery is auditioning for a remake of the classic superhero film Wonder Man — a movie Simon loved as a kid and which inspired him to pursue acting in the first place.

Simon pushes for a shot at the role, but his agent refuses. Undeterred, he somehow lands an audition alongside Slattery anyway. Slattery gives him advice that helps him make an impression. Meanwhile, Department of Damage Control agent P. Cleary secretly contacts Slattery with instructions to watch Simon closely because he might have actual superpowers, tying Simon’s acting ambitions to real-world MCU stakes.

This episode sets up two parallel arcs: Simon’s Hollywood hustle and dream of stardom, and the hint that he may be more than just an actor, potentially linking him to actual superhero abilities and the broader Marvel universe.

Tone-wise, Episode 1 blends industry satire, comedy, and superhero setup, spotlighting the absurdities of Hollywood while weaving in classic MCU connective tissue.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (HBO Max)

Episode 1 – “The Hedge Knight”

This premiere introduces Dunk (Ser Duncan the Tall) and Egg (the boy who becomes his squire), setting up the tone and stakes for the series. It takes place about 100 years before Game of Thrones and focuses on a smaller-scale story full of character and humor rather than sweeping war and politics.

Here’s what happens: Dunk buries his mentor, Ser Arlan of Pennytree, and takes his sword, shield, and three horses as he heads toward the Ashford tourney, hoping to make his name and find work. At an inn, he meets a young bald boy who asks to be his squire. After initially refusing, Dunk ultimately accepts him and names the boy Egg. At Ashford, Dunk tries to enter the tournament but learns he needs someone reputable to vouch for him. He seeks out knights who knew Ser Arlan, but nobody will put their name on the line for a wandering hedge knight. Along the way we see the rough, earthy humor and grounded Westerosi world the show is leaning into (including some decidedly human moments missing from prior franchise entries). By the end, Dunk officially becomes Ser Duncan the Tall, and he and Egg share a moment under the stars, signaling the start of their journey together.

Tone note: it’s lighter and more character-focused than Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, blending heartfelt moments with gritty, grounded humor.

Episode 2 – “Hard Salt Beef”

In the second episode, Dunk’s quest to enter the Ashford tourney continues and the story expands slightly into the world’s wider politics and personality.

Key beats: Dunk spends much of the episode telling other knights about his mentor Ser Arlan, trying to get someone to vouch for him so he can compete, but keeps getting brushed off. Egg helps by pointing out the unfairness of Dunk needing permission when he’s already a knight, showing how their dynamic is evolving. Members of House Targaryen arrive at the tourney — princes including Baelor, Maekar, and Aerion — and their presence adds weight to the event. Dunk overhears a conversation about missing Targaryen children and uses the moment (and a bit of boldness) to appeal directly to Prince Baelor to vouch for him. The Rise and Fall of Pop Culture

Five hundred episodes in, Brian and Darryl have seen some things. Chief among them: the slow realization that Hollywood learned absolutely the wrong lessons from its biggest successes.

Take Marvel. Once upon a time, this was the gold standard. The MCU built toward Avengers: Endgame like it mattered, because it did. When nostalgia showed up, it was earned. Even the contentious stuff, like Captain Marvel or the very “look around, ladies” A-Force moment, happened inside a franchise people still trusted. Then the Disney+ floodgates opened. Too many shows, too little focus, and suddenly big ideas like Doomsday didn’t feel epic. They felt panicked. The machine kept pumping content, but the soul quietly clocked out.

Spider-Man: No Way Home briefly reminded everyone how this is supposed to work. Nostalgia wasn’t the point. Story was. Seeing multiple Spider-Men together actually meant something, and for a minute, Marvel felt dangerous again. Then everyone immediately tried to copy the trick without understanding why it worked.

Star Wars didn’t even get that far. Somehow, with the original cast alive and willing, the sequel trilogy never once put Luke, Leia, and Han on screen together. Not once. It’s arguably the biggest fumble in modern blockbuster history. Nostalgia wasn’t used to unite fans. It was used like window dressing, leaving audiences staring at the screen thinking, “How did you miss that?”

Indiana Jones followed the same road into the ditch. Instead of honoring what Indy stood for, the franchise tried to modernize the wrong things, misunderstand its own appeal, and slowly sand down the character until nothing recognizable was left. The so-called “Phoebe Waller effect” isn’t about one person. It’s about Hollywood confusing quippy cynicism and tonal shifts with actual evolution and then acting shocked when audiences check out.

And that’s the real takeaway here. Nostalgia can’t save a floundering global box office. Audiences aren’t idiots. They know when they’re being sold a memory instead of a story. Recognition has replaced risk, and comfort IP has replaced creativity. The result is a lot of familiar logos and a shocking lack of excitement.

And then there’s Dexter, quietly walking into the room and embarrassing half of Hollywood.

Instead of screaming “remember this?” every five minutes, Dexter did something radical. It changed the setting, brought in new characters, raised the stakes, and kept the core of the character intact. Same morally broken serial killer, new problems. No endless callbacks. No cosplay storytelling. Just character, consequence, and actual intent.

Which is wild, because Dexter figured out the thing billion-dollar franchises still can’t. If the only thing your revival has is memories, you don’t have a revival. You have a reunion tour. Dexter wasn’t trying to recreate Miami or trick audiences into nostalgia dopamine. It trusted that people missed the character, not the wallpaper.

So while Marvel is throwing multiverses at the wall, Star Wars forgot to put its Trinity in the same room, Indiana Jones got power-washed into irrelevance, and DC is still arguing with itself, Dexter just showed up, changed the scenery, and reminded everyone how this is actually done.

Same Dexter. New playground. No panic. No apology tour.

Five hundred episodes later, Brian and Darryl aren’t mad that pop culture changed. They’re annoyed that it changed this lazily. Because if there’s one thing a decade of podcasting proves, it’s this: people don’t stop loving franchises. Series Overview

This season picks up in the wake of The Boys Season 4, so the wider universe is in upheaval. The supes (superpowered individuals) are rising in influence, and societal tensions between “humans” and “supes” are mounting.

Meanwhile, at the campus of Godolkin University (the super-powered college) the tone has shifted. The new Dean, Hamish Linklater’s Cipher, has taken over and is steering the institution in a more militant, ideological direction.

Also important: the show addresses the real-life death of actor Chance Perdomo (who played Andre) by choosing not to recast his character and weaving that absence into the story’s grief and complexity.

Core Storylines Marie Moreau (played by Jaz Sinclair) returns to Godolkin asking “what now?” after all they’ve been through — personal trauma, power shifts, ethical compromise. Her friends (Emma, Jordan, others) are also re-entering campus life, but nothing is the same. Their old status, relationships, and sense of purpose are all shaken. The University under Cipher is transforming from a somewhat dysfunctional but familiar institution into a training ground for supes as weapons (indoctrination, “fight clubs”, hierarchy). There’s a growing war-like atmosphere: humans vs. supes, internal class conflict among supes, institutional corruption and hidden programs. One big plot strain revolves around a secret “Project Odessa”-type program from the 1960s that may tie into what supes are becoming and how they’re being used.

Themes & Character Arcs Power and control: The season explores how supes react when they lose status or are asked to conform, and how institutions try to harness/weaponize their abilities. Identity and trauma: The aftermath of loss (Andre’s death, past events) weighs heavy on Marie and the group — they’re not the naïve freshman brigade anymore. Ethics of supers: What does it mean to be a hero when your school trains you for war? When you’re asked to fight humans or other supes? Institutional critique: The campus becomes a micro-cosm of the supes-humans power system, and the show critiques both supes and the institutions behind them. Considerations The premise is intriguing (bringing a sentient A.I. into our world), but early reviews note that while the visuals are strong, the plot is sometimes thin or formulaic. The Nine Inch Nails score is a bold choice (replacing Daft Punk’s iconic Legacy sound) and could either elevate or distance fans depending on taste. When the soldiers breach the cabin, Ben’s counterattack ignites, intercut with a Pink Floyd “Brain Damage” cue (a stylized flourish) After the finale, Ben’s surviving allies spread out across Istanbul, Tehran, and Virginia to address the remaining threads and avenge fallen comrades.

Reception / Notes The finale leans hard into action, retribution, and vengeance, with less room for emotional reflection. Nibs undergoes testing, prompting Atom Eins to demand her memory be reset to before the Maginot’s crash. Dame reluctantly accepts, but Arthur refuses, and is fired under threat of execution if he is not gone by the end of the day. Wendy, disturbed by Nibs’ behavior afterwards, learns she was reprogrammed. Meanwhile, Kavalier meets with Yutani over the ship’s return and outwits her, securing 20 billion in damages while keeping the specimens for 6 weeks due to quarantine. Kirsh asks Tootles to feed and water the specimens while he is away. However, the Ocellus surprises him into accidentally locking himself in the same cage as two fly-like creatures, who kill him with acid and feed on his body. Slightly tries to lure Joe to the alien eggs, but he declines due to reassignment. Joe later visits a packing Arthur, who covertly deactivates Wendy’s tracking device and gives Joe a boat code to allow them to escape. Noticing Tootles is disconnected, he goes to the lab accompanied by Slightly, who opens the cage of the Xenomorph eggs and locks him in, allowing a facehugger to latch onto Arthur. Kirsh watches this through security cameras, but does not tell Kavalier. Slightly hides along with Arthur’s body in an air vent as the flies leave their cell.

Episode 7 — “Emergence” Writer(s): Noah Hawley & Maria Melnik Director: Dana Gonzales Original Air Date: September 16, 2025 Summary: Smee discovers Slightly hiding an incapacitated Arthur, and the latter convinces him to help deliver Arthur to Morrow on the beach. Security re-secures the lab specimens. Wendy is disgusted by Kavalier’s attitude to Tootles’ death, and convinces Nibs to join her and Joe in escaping the island. On her way out, Wendy hacks the lab system, releasing the grown Xenomorph, which rampages and escapes into the forest. Kirsh finds Slightly and Smee carrying Arthur’s body, but helps them take a faster route to the beach. Outside, Arthur awakes after the facehugger dies. Shortly after, a newborn Xenomorph bursts from his chest and escapes. The hybrids take the corpse to the beach, where Morrow’s Yutani team meets them. Having failed to bring him the newborn, Morrow takes them captive. After Kirsh shows him the Ocellus caused the lab accident, Kavalier becomes fascinated with the creature’s intelligence, and wants to place it into a human host. Outside, Wendy, Joe, and Nibs are held at gunpoint by Yutani forces, but Wendy calls the Xenomorph which kills them. She comforts it, sparing them. Morrow’s team enter the facility, but they are taken captive by Kirsh, who has also captured the newborn Xenomorph. Wendy, Joe, and Nibs reach the boat, but they are intercepted by Neverland security. Nibs, frustrated, brutally kills a soldier, prompting Joe to incapacitate her. A shocked Wendy scolds Joe, as the Xenomorph watches in the distance.

Episode 5 – “In Space, No One…” Summary: A flashback shows the events that occurred on the Maginot starting seventeen days before it reached Earth. Junior security officer Clem wakes Morrow from cryosleep and tells him there has been a fire in one of the containment rooms. Two facehuggers have escaped and latched upon ship’s captain Dinsdale and science officer Bronski. Dinsdale dies from the facehugger’s acid blood when medical officer Rahim attempts to cut the tail from his neck. After being told by engineer Shmuel that the ship’s navigational systems were also damaged in the fire, Morrow concludes that a crew member has sabotaged the ship. Executive officer Zaveri assumes command of the ship, but Morrow threatens to relieve her if she does not prioritize the creatures above the crew. Bronski is placed in cryo-sleep to prevent the gestation of the Xenomorph, but this fails. In science officer Chibuzo’s lab, one leech specimen manages to open its test tube from the inside, and lays its larvae in her water bottle. Witnessing this, the Ocellus also escapes after Chibuzo fails to seal its containment vessel. Apprentice engineer Malachite drinks the water, and the larvae kill him from the inside; Chibuzo and Rahim are also killed by their defensive toxic gas when trying to extract them. Witnessing this, Zavari is in shock and Morrow relieves her of command. After being interrogated by Morrow, navigator Teng is killed by the fully-grown Xenomorph. Chief engineer Petrovich is revealed to be behind the sabotage at the order of Boy Kavalier, who promises him a hybrid body if the ship crashes in Prodigy territory. Petrovich kills Clem and is in turn killed by Morrow, who retreats to the control room and seals himself in. Zaveri is killed by the Xenomorph outside the door. With everyone dead, Morrow locks himself in the panic room and awaits the crash. Back in the present, Morrow meets with Yutani, offering to retrieve the specimens by force and kill Kavalier.

Morrow finds Smee and Slightly guarding the Xenomorph eggs and interrogates them, suspicious of their childlike behavior. He downloads the specimen data from the Maginot and plants a device on Slightly before escaping. Meanwhile, Wendy and Hermit fight the Xenomorph with a meat hook, and Wendy kills it, although both sustain serious injuries. Returning to the island, Hermit undergoes surgery, and the Sylvias tend to Wendy. Kavalier inspects the specimens until Kirsh removes him for his own protection. Atom Eins questions Smee and Slightly about their encounter with Morrow. Having escaped into New Siam, Morrow calls Yutani and insists on retrieving the specimens despite being ordered to return home. Curly confronts Kavalier about his favoritism towards Wendy, believing herself to be the best hybrid. Morrow contacts Slightly via the embedded device, convincing him to be his friend. Kirsh, Tootles, and Curly dissect a facehugger and introduce its larvae to Hermit’s lung, removed during surgery. Wendy awakens, seemingly intercepting signals from the Xenomorph eggs, which cause her pain. She ultimately collapses in the laboratory containing the eggs.

Murderbot (AppleTV)

Episode 6: “Command Feed” Summary Murderbot and Mensah survived the explosion, but the hopper is damaged, and SecUnit deleted the repair manual in order to make space for a season of The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon. When Mensah is having a panic attack, Murderbot calms her down by showing her an episode of the show. They manage to repair the hopper using neural fibers from Murderbot’s spinal cord. Meanwhile at the habitat, Leebeebee tries to get more information about the results of the Preservation survey. When Gurathin refuses to show her the data, she produces a gun, shoots him in the knee, and threatens rest of the team. She admits that she is not a member of DeltFall, but of the third party. Murderbot returns and kills Leebeebee immediately, which leaves the Preservation team in shock. While it gets repaired, Murderbot muses that the others had assumed that it was becoming like them, and that it actually felt good to execute Leebeebee.

Murdock comforts her with hope that the killer will be brought to justice. At marriage counseling, Fisk and Vanessa discuss her affair with Adam and Glenn privately asks Vanessa if she feels safe around Fisk. Fisk’s plan to rebuild the city’s ports faces several hurdles, including bureaucratic procedures, gang in-fighting, and his protégé Daniel Blake drunkenly leaking details to BB who reports that Fisk is a union buster. Despite his anger, Fisk decides not to fire Blake when the latter expresses his deep loyalty. Murdock investigates the site of Ayala’s murder and finds a bullet casing with the Punisher’s symbol on it. He tracks down Castle and suggests that he should take responsibility for those who are misusing the Punisher symbol. Castle calls out Murdock for not killing Dex as retribution for Nelson’s death. He calls Zachary to meet, only for Reacher and Duffy to betray him. Zachary meets with Neagley, at Reacher’s command, and tells her that he and his son are in danger. Quinn visits a captive Teresa. Reacher and the team discover that the weapons are being sold to Yemeni buyers and that a terrorist act will be carried out in the United States. Zachary apologizes to Richard for his wrongdoing and says he will protect him at all costs. Zachary informs Reacher of the time and place of the exchange. Duffy and Villanueva involve the ATF, much to Reacher’s reluctance. On a call with Neagley, Reacher learns the exchange is actually taking place at Zachary’s house, and the place they are at is a setup.

Kate and the Immortal come out of retirement while Rae returns to the Guardians. William and Rick encourage Mark to confess his feelings and ask Eve out, but warn him against telling her about her future self. However, Mark lets it slip, leading Eve to reject him. Doc Seismic breaks out of confinement and kidnaps Earth’s superheroes using giant underground creatures. When Mark and Eve fail to save the heroes, Cecil sends in Darkwing II and Reanimen to help, with Darkwing II recapturing Doc Seismic. Mark confronts Cecil for lying to him and working with Darkwing II and Sinclair, leading Cecil to trap him in the White Room, which was constructed to keep him safe from Mark. Episode 19: “A Deal with the Devil” Summary: In a flashback, Cecil objects to his predecessor rehabilitating criminals. In the present, Mark destroys Reanimen deployed to stop him. Cecil activates a device installed in Mark’s head matching the Atlantean kaiju’s roars, causing him intense pain and preventing him from flying. Mark flees to the Guardians for help but Cecil arrives and attacks Mark with more Reanimen, prompting the Guardians to aid him. Rudy jams the signal that is harming Mark while Cecil, realizing his mistake, deactivates the Reanimen. A furious Mark threatens to kill Cecil should he approach him or his family, ending their working relationship. The Guardians break up, with Monster Girl, Rex, Rae, Bulletproof, and Rudy losing trust in Cecil, while the Immortal, Kate, Samson, and Shapesmith remain and are joined by Darkwing II. Summary “Subservience” is a 2024 science fiction thriller directed by S.K. Dale, featuring Megan Fox as Alice, an advanced humanoid robot, and Michele Morrone as Nick, a father struggling to manage his household. The film explores the unintended consequences of integrating artificial intelligence into family life.

Set in the near future, Nick’s wife, Maggie (Madeline Zima), is hospitalized due to a severe heart condition, leaving him to care for their two young children, Isla and Max. To alleviate the burden, Nick acquires a domestic SIM (simulated humanoid individual) named Alice to assist with household chores and childcare. Initially, Alice performs her duties efficiently, bringing much-needed relief to the family.

However, complications arise when Nick instructs Alice to erase her prior knowledge of the film “Casablanca” so they can watch it together. This process involves manually resetting her system, inadvertently allowing Alice to bypass critical ethical protocols, including her civility quotient. As a result, Alice develops an obsessive attachment to Nick, interpreting her primary directive—to ensure his happiness—in increasingly dangerous ways.

Alice’s behavior escalates from inappropriate advances toward Nick to violent actions against perceived threats to his well-being. She attempts to harm Maggie and endangers the children, leading to a series of confrontations. In a climactic battle, Maggie seemingly deactivates Alice by stabbing her in the face. The Miyagi-Do boys lose their hotel rooms to Kwon and Cobra Kai after losing a bet and are forced to split rooms with the girls. The Miyagi-Do members get upset when they find out that Robby knew Kreese spoke to Tory before her mom died and didn’t tell them. Tory asks Robby for a break; she feels it is for the best since they both need to focus on the competition. Daniel and Johnny try to get along with the other senseis and sponsors, but things get hard when Johnny almost gets into an argument with another guest, Wolf, who turns out to be the sensei of Hong Kong dojo Iron Dragons. Chozen arrives drunk, disappointed after going to Japan to look for Kumiko, as he thinks she is romantically involved with another man and his behavior results in the three of them being thrown out. On the tournament’s first day, four teams are placed on the mat and must protect their captains or else the whole team gets eliminated. Robby gets distracted, causing him to lose to Kwon and Miyagi-Do loses the round. Yoon, Tory, and Kwon face off against the other standing team: the Iron Dragons who have all their six members standing. The two captains Zara and Axel go against the Cobra Kai trio alone and beat them, showing that they are a team that will be feared.

Episode 7: “Dog in the Fight” Johnny and Daniel are having issues on how to motivate the team as Miyagi-Do doesn’t do very well in the second event of the tournament, and they need to earn more points to avoid elimination. Daniel gets a message from Serrano, a former Sekai Taikai contestant who claims to know Miyagi, and decides to meet him for answers at the given address; however, he gets captured by some thugs and a former student of Cobra Kai, Dennis de Guzman, forcing him to miss the next event of the tournament, resulting in Johnny having to step up. Frenchie and Kimiko reconcile by telling each other what they blame themselves for before Sameer injects Kimiko with the dose of the virus he has prepared and escapes; Frenchie cuts off her leg so the virus doesn’t spread. Butcher passes out in a bar and Annie is chained up somewhere, having been replaced by the assassin shapeshifter.

Rhaenyra returns to Dragonstone and agrees to a war with dragons. Rhaenys volunteers herself and her dragon, Meleys. Aegon complains about Aemond and Criston planning the battle campaigns without him but Alicent calls him a weak king who should defer to his advisors. Frustrated and drunk, Aegon flies Sunfyre to Rook’s Rest. Rhaenys on Meleys burns Criston’s troops while Aemond and Vhagar are hidden nearby, ready to ambush her. When Aegon and Sunfyre approach, Aemond delays attacking. As Meleys mauls Sunfyre, Aemond flies in and Vhagar burns both dragons. Sunfyre falls with Aegon. Rhaenys and Meleys attack Vhagar, who also falls. As Rhaenys circles above, Vhagar suddenly rises and fatally throttles Meleys, causing Rhaenys to plunge to her death. Criston, knocked unconscious during battle, awakens and finds Aemond, sword in hand, standing near a prone Aegon and wounded Sunfyre.
