This month, we’re visiting the land of India: Kashmir, to be exact, where we hear the story of The Cat Who Became a Queen.

The story of an animal getting married to a human is not only one you find in India, although this one, as you hear it, you’ll find is wonderfully detailed and very Indian indeed.

These kinds of stories are called “animal bride” stories – another example is “East O’ the Sun and West O’ the Moon,” a very famous tale. Another “animal bride” tale that you’ve probably heard of is “Beauty and the Beast.”

So now you know what KIND of tale that is. See how smart you are?

At the end, you’ll hear one of Elizabeth’s newest songs, also based on something old: a Mother Goose rhyme. The song is based on Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary. Bet you find it “quite contrary” to your expectations, though: it’s a real rock and roller.

Have a great one. See you soon!

On this month’s Inkless Tales Podcast for Kids, we have a retelling of a traditional Zulu folktale: Where Stories Come From.

This is a special kind of folk tale, called a “pour quoi” (poor-KWAH) myth, which means “why?” It’s called that because it’s a story which explains something. In this tale, of course, it’s the story of all stories. I’m betting you’ll love it.

Following up on that, I discovered a fabulous new word in Swahili: furaha. It means “happy.” So I wrote a song about it, and I added that song to this podcast, too. I hope it makes YOU happy to hear it.

This year, my goal is to try to tell more stories from all over the world, since Inkless Tales gets so many visitors from all over the world. Next month: a tale from India. I think you’ll enjoy that one, too.

Thanks for listening.

Your friend,

Elizabeth Williams Bushey
