Traffic Sgt R. Lawhead explains that on Thursday, March 11, 2010, at about 12:06 AM a uniformed patrol officer from the San Bernardino Police Department attempted to make a traffic enforcement stop on a motorcycle in the area of West 16th Street and North E Street in San Bernardino. When the officer activated his emergency lights, the motorcyclist failed to stop and accelerated away at a high rate of speed.

According to witnesses, as the motorcyclist went westbound on West Highland Avenue at North H Street, he appeared to be traveling in excess of 100 MPH when he lost control of his motorcycle and struck the north curb of West Highland Avenue. The motorcyclist was ejected from the motorcycle and suffered major injuries. Paramedics from the San Bernardino City Fire Department responded to the scene and provided emergency medical aid. They pronouced the motorcyclist dead-at-the-scene.

The motorcyclist is not being identified at this time pending notification of his next-of-kin. It is believed that the motorcyclist had outstanding warrants for his arrest and was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.

The San Bernardino Police Department’s Traffic Unit is investigating this collision, and is asking anyone with information about this collision to call 909-384-5735 or the Police Department’s 24-hour Hotline 909-384-5656.

On Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at approximately 8:45 PM, San Bernardino County Sheriff Deputies from the West Foothill Station responded to the 17800 block of Otilla Street in Bloomington after receiving a 9-1-1 call reporting an unknown medical problem. Upon arrival, Deputies found Damian and Margarita Herrera in the home; both suffering from gunshot wounds. Damian was dead at the scene. Margarita was alive and taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Fontana.

The Herrera’s 4 children/step-children, ages 12, 9, 6 and 5, and two unrelated tenants were in the home when the shooting occurred. Because of the circumstances, a Sheriff’s homicide team responded to assist with the investigation.

Detectives have determined Damian & Margarita Herrera had been involved in a domestic dispute during which, Damian would leave for short periods of time, each time he returned, the dispute would continue. As the couple was arguing in one part of the house, the children and the two other residents in other parts of the house heard gunshots and discovered Damian and Margarita down, suffering from gunshot wounds. It appears Damien shot Margarita and then himself. Damien died as a result of the self inflicted gun shot wound. Margarita is listed in critical condition at ARMC. The children were not physically harmed and have been released to family members.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information can call Detective Scott Landen or Sergeant Frank Bell at (909) 387-3589. Callers who wish to remain anonymous can call WETip at (800) 78-CRIME (782-7463).

A fugitive parolee wanted in connection with a March 6 home invasion robbery in Redlands was tracked down in Yucaipa Tuesday afternoon by members of the Redlands Police Department’s Multiple Enforcement Team and ultimately connected to another home invasion robbery, residential burglary, attempted carjacking, two armed robberies and a vehicle pursuit.

James Jesse Sult, 25, was taken into custody at a home in the 12000 block of 18th Street in Yucaipa at about 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 9. He was found in possession of a loaded firearm, heroin, methamphetamine and keys to a nearby stolen vehicle that had been taken during a residential burglary in Redlands last week.

In addition to the burglary in the 1500 block of Margit Street and residential robbery in the 900 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, both on March 6, Sult was linked to the Feb. 21 home invasion robbery in the 500 block of Lantern Crest, an attempted carjacking at Lugonia Avenue and Wabash Avenue March 2, two armed robberies of a Circle K and Valero gas station in Mentone, and a vehicle pursuit with Sheriff’s deputies in the stolen car.

MET officers initially identified Sult as a suspect in the March 6 residential robbery in the 900 block of East Pennsylvania Avenue. The robber entered an open garage door at about 1 a.m. and held up four people in the garage at gunpoint, leaving with cash. MET officers who had contacted Sult in the neighborhood earlier in the evening were able to match his description to the victims’ depiction of the robber.

On Sunday, Feb. 21, two residents in the 500 block of Lantern Crest Drive were held up at gunpoint by a man who entered the home through an unlocked rear door. The robber took cash and prescription medications before shutting the residents in a closet and fleeing the residence.

On March 2, a man was held up at gunpoint at Wabash and Lugonia by a suspect who attempted to steal the victim’s car. The would-be carjacker left when he was unable to start the vehicle.

Sult was arrested for residential robbery, residential burglary, attempted carjacking and parole violation. He was transported to the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino.

Redlands Police Chief Jim Bueermann praised the determined police work of MET officers who identified Sult as the suspect, tracked him down and ultimately connected him to a rash of potentially violent crime over the two-week span.

“This was good, basic heads-up police work,” said Bueermann. “Neighborhood contacts lead to solid intelligence; persistent investigation tracks down the fugitive suspect and good follow-up ties the bad guy to a number of additional crimes not just in our City but in the county as well.”

Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Redlands Police Dispatch at (909) 798-7681. Anonymous tips can be provided by texting 274637 using the keyword “REDTIP.”

The San Bernardino Police Department conducted a DUI/Driver License checkpoint in the 1300 Block of S. E Street from 6:00 PM to 11:30 PM on Friday, March 5, 2010. During the checkpoint, 412 vehicles were screened and 1 person was given field sobriety tests. 1 person was arrested for Driving Under the Influence, 2 people were arrested for outstanding warrants and 31 people were issued citations for various violations. 3 citations were issued for driving on a suspended or revoked license and 10 citations were issued to drivers who did not have a valid license. 10 vehicles were impounded. Of those, 8 were impounded for 30 days.

This program was part of San Bernardino Police Departments ongoing efforts to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes and to ensure that drivers have a valid license. DUI checkpoints are conducted to educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving while identifying offenders and getting them off the street.

All too often, members of our community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by impaired drivers. A major component of these checkpoints is to increase awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and to encourage sober designated drivers. DUI/Driver License Checkpoints have proven to be an effective method of achieving this goal. By publicizing these enforcement and education efforts, the San Bernardino Police Department believes motorists can be deterred from drinking and driving.

Our objective is to send a clear message to those who are considering driving a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol and/or drugs – Drunk Driving, Over the Limit, Under Arrest. The public is encouraged to help keep roadways safe. Report Drunk Drivers, Call 911.

Funding for this operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
