The event is a "pitch free" environment, so there is no hard sell to buy products or courses, at least on the first two days.  By day three, some of the presenters are allowed to pitch products and services, but in a non-intrusive way.  There is no hard sell, just soft sells if you are interested in a product. So, what inside information did I learn being a speaker this year?  What tips would I only share with members of the Internet Time Machine? 1. The next 18-24 months is all about WEBINARS.  That is the new hot phrase and buzz word in the IM space. Since the long tail sales page is dying, and now the video sales page is slowly giving less and less results, the next logical step in getting someone to "like, know, or trust" you, is a webinar.  For those that don't know, a webinar can be a live or recorded presentation, lasting between 45 minutes and 90 minutes, where you listen to audio and have a visual presentation as well.  This could be a slide show presentation or a live software demonstration.  The conversion rates on webinars are MUCH HIGHER than sales pages and even videos.  Why?  If you can get a person to listen to you, and get to "know" you over 90 minutes, the chances they buy are much greater than if they just read a sales page.  The moderator can control the offers, the bonuses, and sales techniques much more acutely on a webinar as well.   WEBINARS The webinar itself is fairly easy to do yourself as services like gotowebinar or gotomeeting make it almost fool proof to set up your webinar, get the links to email people, and to run your webinar, whether it is live or recorded.  Affiliates like webinar's because they convert well to sales, and the tracking is very easy with the unique links that the gotowebinar and gotomeeting software generate.  I can think of at least 8-10 "How To Do Great Webinars" type courses that are already out there or plan on launching. This is just the type of the iceberg.  There are plans for at least 10 more "how to make money with webinar" products coming out. The opportunity I see for this niche, ISN'T in the IM niche, but taking the webinar technology to "real" businesses that are starving for content and user interaction.  I think selling a full webinar service to offline and legit online companies is a niche that no one is talking about.  Have a webinar series devoted to each person in management sharing their business philosophy. Send out the recordings to employees and customers. Have the webinar transcribed (super cheap) and release it in text format as in interview on their sites.  Maybe a press release is in order when the president or CEO of the company is interviewed. Just something to think about. APPS The actual app presentation left a bit to be desired at Underground 7, but don't let the presentation fool you from the point.  APPS are big and getting bigger, BUT they are now being used in lead generation and other tactical and practical areas of business.  The latest idea is to add a "nag" button to your app. This is the screen that comes up and asks the person if they would like to upgrade from the fee version to the paid version.  Well, that screen and the text on it can be use to ask any question and when the person hits the "yes" or "no" button, it can redirect them to a website or optin form.  So, if you have an APP and wanted a "nag" screen to say "Would You Like Our Free Tip Sheet" or "Would You Like Our Free Report on SEO" or something like that, the user can hit "yes" and be taken to a mobile ready optin form. Very sneaky and a nice way to build a list through mobile traffic. THE DEATH OF THE IM SPACE The more you listen the more you hear of gurus and famous IM marketers dying to leave the industry. I was curious as to why so many "successful lifestyle millionaires" where saying the IM space is dead and don't bother with it as a niche.  Two main reasons came out through my hours of talks. 1. The biz opp offer area has ruined the IM space.  The super-scammy work at home offers have blurred the lines (at least to regulators and Google) between legit IM marketing courses and ideas and scammy ripoff artists.  The IM space is now being lumped in with the scam biz opp area and Google doesn't like either one and neither does the Federal government.  One prominent industry leader told me, "What the biz opp offer is promising to do for $27, it would take me $3,000 of coaching to get that real results, so why would anyone chose me over the $27 fake product." 2. English affiliate marketing - Believe it or not the affiliate marketers in the US are crying foul at their counterparts in England.  The US marketers claims that because we have the FTC over here, and that the FTC is now cracking down on the IM space, that the products and claims of IM marketers in the US are more realistic with the products now.  (IE, not fake and crazy promises, or at least more controlled).  With no FTC equivalent in England, the English products and marketers have taken the claims of their products and promises on what they can do to a whole new level of absurdity.  The US marketers feel they are ruining the industry for all, forcing a government step in as complaints mount, and they will cause a restructure of the industry sooner rather than later. Other notes...   If you are in to domain flipping or domaining, as it is called, check out Chad Fulkering at ecorp.com.  They are set to release a software that drops a website on your URL's that are in your portfolio so that they can be optimized to get Google Adwords traffic on day 1 while you wait to sell them. It is a turnkey solution for people that buy 10-20-50 domains at a time and just want to drop a site on each one to start getting traffic. Checkout Matt Mickiewicz, of Flippa and 99 Designs fame, new website, learnable.com that launched this week. It is a platform for schools, teaches, or anyone to run an online teaching system for very short money.  Matt is continually one step ahead of markets and this learnable website is one of his most exciting projects. Facebook traffic seems to convert to webinars better than websites or optin forms. Seems most of the success right now is sending Facebook traffic to a webinar signup page, then sell them from there. The marketing alert came in on the morning of January 5, 2011.  The phrase moving up the charts had gone from #5,000 to #145 in a matter of months.  The phrase is "storage facility auctions". This sudden surge usually corresponds with a major press or public display like Oprah talking about it, or Obama buying one.  This time the surge is related to a TV show on Spike TV called "Auctions Hunters".  This niche show, as I mention in the video, is like watching a car accident.  Once you see 5 minutes, you are hooked. It is the appeal of "lost treasure" or "one man's trash is another man's treasure". Currently this one phrase has 50,000 searches per month and it can build a list of people who are looking to make money, a very good thing for future products related to Internet marketing. The niche revolves around the idea that once a client stops paying his or her self storage bill, a process begins to take possession of the unit.  If the owner doesn't come forward at some point, it is fair game to be auctioned off to the public.  This is where the show picks up.  The bidding is done in front of the unit and it is an old fashion auction.  You are allowed to look in the unit, but you can't go it or touch anything. So if there are blankets or sheets covering things, you need to do your best guess work on what the unit contains and what it could be worth. The need for information around this niche product is huge right now.  Demand is growing, and it is like having the first Ebay guide out there.  This is Ebay for the neighborhood. So why isn't the Internet Time Machine bubbling with FOREX ideas?  Very simply, the demand is very high (as we can see from above), but the supply is also very high.  So we don't have an area of high demand and low supply.  We only usually see half of our equation in this area, so we don't jump. Until now. First, let's go over a little background information.  China, which is still a communist country, is very quickly becoming an economic superpower. Not only are they the biggest exporter in the world (most of the stuff we buy is made there), they are now becoming one of the biggest importers in the world as well.  This is due to the population growth and the fastest growing middle class and millionaire classes in the history of the planet. China, because the still export so much more than the import, has a net trade surplus every month.  By surplus, we mean billions of dollars each month ends up coming into China compared to what goes out. Up until this last economic downturn, China would usually invest their surplus in the sovereign debt of their trading partners.  This means they would by government backed bonds from the US, Germany, England, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and other countries.  Why do this?  One, it kept the coffers fill at their trading partners so they could continue to buy, and two, it kept interest rates low in those countries so consumers could spend more on their credit cards and get access to low interest loans...in order to get more money to spend, hence the debt problems Americans in general found themselves in this past 24 months. Lets fast forward to present day, China owns tons and tons of bonds issued by the US government, Germany, Japan, and everyone else.   They see all these governments issuing new debt to cover all the old debt and it makes them a little nervous.  As government's issue more and more debt, the rates go up on the debt because buyers want more return for their investment in case that government can't pay it back.   China already bought and owns tons of this debt and doesn't like to see their earlier investment losing value, so they are start thinking, "Maybe with the dollar, euro, mark, and yen starting to be less valuable with each new currency printed, maybe our currency the yuan, should become the world's currency, or at least a major player." One problem, China doesn't let any of its currency out into the world, it is only allowed to be held in mainland China banks. Until about a few months ago. China has recently allowed its currency to be traded "off shore", meaning it can be held in banks and offshore accounts in Singapore.  I know what you are thinking, "What do I care?".  This now opens up the yuan, the Chinese currency, to the FOREX trading desks.  If you can buy and sell yuan at will without the permission of the Chinese government, then you have a massive tidal wave of interest coming.  Check out this quote from a recent Wall Street Journal article. "Only months after the offshore market’s launch, banks in Hong Kong are rolling out the financial infrastructure associated with major currencies, including FOREX options, an instrument used by companies to guard against future exchange rate movements. Their onshore counterparts have already been waiting five years to be allowed to trade options and yet still have no idea when Beijing might give the go-ahead." And this quote from a recent article as well.. "As a result, the yuan pool has grown quickly. According to data from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, yuan deposits in Hong Kong grew 45.4% in October from the month before to 217.1 billion. The pile-up is causing headaches. Given very limited avenues for funds outside of China – yuan or otherwise – to be invested in China’s mainland capital market, overseas holders of yuan are crying out for somewhere to park their money. And while the issuance of yuan-denominated bonds in Hong Kong is starting to pick up pace, there’s still much more demand for yuan assets than there is supply.   So here we are in a situation, NOW...where we have big demand and low supply, in an incredibly hot market.  The Chinese are slowly letting their currency "float" and there are millions of hungry investors and companies that want to know how to trade it and how to invest in it. The sudden rise of the iPhone brought smartphones to consumer awareness in America and opened a new chapter in High Tech, with a tidal wave of hardware and software innovations cascading one after the other, triggering a complete rewriting of the strategic balance amongst High Tech companies all over the world and the markets they serve. They are a known quantity in Spain – serial entrepreneurs who have worked together before, and are either running their own companies or serve as senior officers in public companies that provide IT equipment, software, reverse logistics and services to customers in Spain, Portugal and Latin America.” ITM: “Why would anyone have the slightest interest in your products over those from Sony, Apple, Toshiba or any of a number of other big, worldwide manufacturers?” PG: “We entered this endeavor knowing that we could not immediately challenge such companies from the outset, and we don’t need to. As 2011 approaches, internet marketers and niche website owners need to adjust their business pages for the coming changes. As an alternative, set up Light Box, or a similar program that will be embedded on all your pages, but NOT your homepage.  Have a user give you information in exchange for value on all your other web pages, just not the homepage.  Create an optin in order for the user to read your posts or see your articles, not to just get to your site.   #2. Add the Facebook "Like" Button - We cannot harp on this one enough.  Bing is already using LIKES as part of their algorithm and when Facebook releases their own search engine, LIKES will be a big part of how results are dictated. Adding LIKES to your page is like getting links, only 20 years ago.  LIKES that are added today, will have greater value in 3 years than LIKES added then.  Why?  Because by then, just like link farms were created, people will figure out how to create LIKE farms and try to beat the system.  It is cyclical, so it will happen.  Add that LIKE button today!   #1. Optin with zip code - The value of the zip code is becoming more and more evident as companies like Groupon and social medial coupon companies hit valuations of $300 billion dollars. No longer is "just a list" or "a sales funnel of emails" going to cut it.  You must get zip codes as well.  This will create a whole new set of unique marketing and money making opportunities as you send out local offers and affiliate offers. Imagine how much more valuable your list would be to local businesses if you could break it out by zip codes and offer them chances to mail to them.    What if you could offer them a "no cost proposition" where you just shared the revenue you brought in?  Would every business in the world say "yes"? The sticky part of LinkedIN is that it also has a social network element as well, where you can list your connections (think "friends" in Facebook) and see other people's connections. In true "7 Degrees of Kevin Bacon" you can see how far away you are from someone in the business world.  This can be especially valuable when trying to get a job. What we have learned about this niche marketing idea is that the Internet Time Machine has tracked over 120 keyphrases that show strong demand around the word "LinkedIN", yet don't have very many organic or PPC results.  When we see 5-10 phrases in one area of strong demand and low supply we get excited, so this just tells us how BIG LinkedIn is getting and how much more growth there is ahead for it. Create a FourSquare Tip Sheet or Guide - This is a huge opportunity for some fast moving Internet marketing professional.  The tips sheet would be easy to create, could be given away for free in exchange for an email address, and it could help build a monster list of people who use FourSquare.  Make sure you collect a zip code with the email as this will be key to segmenting the list later on.  Once you have an email address with zip code you can now market that list to every business or restaurant in that zip code.   2. Build a Big List - FourSquare uses have one big "tell" in their game, they let you know where they are as they play.  That is huge information as you can now market that list to businesses and restaurants in those areas.  For example, if you are a business owner and you get these two offers, which on is more appealing? "Hi, this is John from the Yellowpages, would you like to take out a $500 half page listing with us?"   or   "Hi, this is Curt from IM marketing, we have a list of 5,000 Foursquare users who eat at restaurants within 5 blocks of your business, how would you like to send out a coupon or offer to them and I only get a % of what comes in from that offer, it is risk free for you?" Who do you think gets the sale?   3.  Craft Your Own Offers - The list is geographic based, but that doesn't mean you don't have a list of mobile niche users that are into gps, friend locations, and sharing information.  What if you sent out affiliate offers for your own income.  Would this list be up for an affiliate link to sign up for a dating site?  How about a DJ service, or maybe a taxi service.
