How-to: Make Custom IPhone Ringtones Without Paying Apple $$$s

Make Custom iPhone Ringtones for Free

So you bought an iPhone. You love the phone and all its features, but wish you didn't have to pay for your songs twice to get a ringtone. There are plenty of songs in your music library, but no way to make ringtones from any of them. Or is there? Actually, with a little bit of trickery (nothing illegal), you can create ringtones from any one of your non-DRM songs in your iTunes library easily and for free. This works on both Mac and Windows PCs.

*Please note: There may be differences among all the possible combinations of iTunes versions and operating system versions (see Tips for a way to work around the syncing issues).

Instructions:

Open iTunes.

Find the song that you want to make into a ringtone.

Listen to the song and find the part of it you want to use. The chorus may be a good place to start.

Write down the start and stop times of the clip.

Right-click the song and select "Get Info."

Click the "Options" tab.

Type in the start time of your ringtone in the text box next to "Start Time" in the minutes:seconds (i.e., 2:01) format.

Type in the end time of your ringtone in the text box next to "Stop Time." Make sure the ringtone is no more than 40 seconds long.

Click "OK."

Right-click your song again and select "Convert Selection to AAC." Wait for iTunes to convert your song. It will create a duplicate version.

Right-click the ringtone and select "Delete."

Click on the "Keep Files" button.

Find the file. It's usually in your User folder under "Music > iTunes > iTunes Music" and under the band's name. It will have an extension of m4a.

Replace the m4a extension of your ringtone with m4r. You can either double-click slowly to rename your file, or right-click and select "Get Info" on a Mac or "Rename" on a Windows PC.

Click "Use .m4r" or the PC equivalent when the system warns you that the change may affect the use of your file.

Double-click the ringtone file. ITunes will automatically add it to your ringtones folder in your iTunes Music Library.

Connect your iPhone and sync your ringtones.

NetTalk iPhone app offers free US/Canada calls

netTalk, a VoIP service provider, has released an app offering free calls to the U.S. and Canada on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. netTALK is known for its DUO product, a device that transforms your broadband internet connection into a phone line allowing you to use a traditional phone connected to your router or to your computer via USB to make phone calls, which was released earlier this year. The free netTALK app hit the App Store this week and works on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch running iOS 3.1 or higher.

netTALK promises that low-cost international calling is coming soon. Users of the company’s DUO product will also be able to link their DUO phone number to the app in order to receive calls through it.

Using the app requires you to sign up for a free netTALK account – you’re directed to Safari to create it and you’ll receive an email with a verification link to activate your account. Once this is done, you can make free calls at will through the app. In-call options include speakerphone and mute as well as a call recording option. Recorded calls can be accessed within the app via the call history list in the Recents tab.

We tested netTALK briefly on our iPhone 4 and iPad on both Wi-Fi and 3G networks and the app works generally as expected though call quality wasn’t perfect. Note that calls made using the netTALK app will show up as “unknown” or an unidentifiable number through Caller ID on the receiving end.

App review: Google Latitude iPhone App

Google Latitude has been available for the iPhone since July 2009 but only as a web app instead of a native iOS application. Now, after briefly appearing in the App Store last week, and being quickly pulled, the iOS Latitude app is finally available in all its glory.

Version 2.0.0.346 of the app – a slightly odd version number for a new application, revealing how long it took for the app to be ready for prime time or for Apple to approve it – brings exactly what you would expect: it displays a map telling you where your friends are.

The app requires iOS 4.0 or later and works on the third and fourth generation of iPod touch, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4.0, as well as iPad.

App review: Adobe Photoshop.com Mobile for iPhone

We all know the iPhone camera isn't the best, we also know that chances are you take pictures that are good, but maybe need a little help on the improving side. Yep, there is an app for that. But has the imaging software company cracked it, or is this one Adobe app you shouldn't bother to download?

Available for the iPhone, the app is currently free, however isn't available in other countries like the UK. You can however get it on Windows Phone handsets.

Fire it up and you are presented with three main options: edit a photo, view your online Photoshop.com gallery and upload your images to the service.

Opt for the editing process and you can either select a photo from your camera roll or take a fresh photo to then edit. Once you've got your photo loaded you can then start manipulating it. There are a plethora of options from cropping (1:1, 3:4, 4:3 ratios or custom) to rotating your image to flipping horizontally or vertically.

But it's not just about cropping out the random dude in your photo, Exposure, Saturation, Tint and Black & White are also available to you. All the editing features are controlled via your finger simply by moving it from one side of the screen to the other. The editing process is incredibly easy and luckily Adobe has thought to add a numbering or colouring system to each editing filter so you can achieve the same settings each time on different pictures. You can't punch that in as a number, but at least you can replicate it.

All that's good, but where would a photo editor be without the ability to create crazy image effects? Here you get a range of them. Two - Sketch and Soft Focus - will actually change the image drastically, with the Sketch option making it look like a drawing. The other photo effects are based on colour washes, most of which are fun rather than useful. We can't really see you wanting to "Rainbow" or "Pop" many pictures (see images for example), however used on the right photo and Black & White, Warm Vintage, and Vignette Blur could be very handy.

Once you've created and edited your work of art you can then save it to your Camera Roll as a new image or chose to upload it to Photoshop.com, Adobe's picture service. As you would expect the app gives you access to that space so you can view images stored on the service and you get 2GB free with the option to add more storage at a price.

Uploading is simple but limited as you can only upload your image to the Photoshop.com service. There is no social networking functionality, no Flickr support, no Facebook support, no nothing. It's a shame because if you want to do upload anywhere else you have to come out of that app and then start up another app (i.e., Facebook) to get the job done. It's no biggie, but it would have been nice to have been able to do it from the one application.

With live access to your Photoshop.com galleries you can then bore the world with your favourite images from the palm of your hand and you can play albums and images as a slideshow, but you can't play it back to music or anything.

On the PC or Mac you can access the site via a standard browser.

Verdict

The Photoshop Mobile for iPhone app is impressive when it comes to editing your images, especially as it is free.

The big catch is that it is isolated to the one service, something that makes this more of an advert for Photoshop.com rather than an all powerful imaging app that will make you dump all the others you've downloaded on your phone.

If that doesn't bother you and you just want a basic image editor with some fun features then you might as well give it a spin, after all it's not going to cost you anything.

App review: TomTom for iPhone v1.3 with HDTraffic review

We aren't normally in the game of reviewing software revisions for an iPhone app, after all, there is no point wasting your time to tell you about some bug fixes or stability updates ... snooze.

So why are you reading? Because TomTom for iPhone v1.3 is actually a major overhaul that sees a number of new features added, that in turn has a massive difference on how the software works and what is now offered.

There are two key new elements to the software: Google Local Search and HD Traffic.

Both have been ported from the company's line of dedicated personal navigation devices (Rather geekily called PNDs). Local Search as the name suggests allows you to search Google within the app and then have that address automatically set as a navigation point.

Search near me, search in a city, search near home or search near a destination are all available and it certainly saves you a lot of time jumping between the iPhone's browser and the TomTom for iPhone app.

The search interface is simple to use and you see the relevant information like the address, where it is on the map, and a phone number for you to press to ring. Any additional information is also shown on a separate connected page.

Where Local Search comes in handy is when you are looking for a specific hotel, restaurant or car dealership for example, as chances are, Google knows where it is. As we've said, Local Search is just one of the big hitters here for version 1.3, however it's also the one that's free.

HD Traffic, TomTom's fantastic traffic service that, through a number of different methods, monitors road usage and can then help you avoid traffic jams altogether, is now included. We say included, however you will have to pay for the service with an in-app payment.

The service, which will be based on users opting in to a subscription model, will come in daily, weekly, monthly and yearly packages with drivers able to buy the extra feature via the app to use straight away. Handy if stuck in a jam.

Once you've opted to go HD Traffic then the app gets to work making sure you are not going to get stuck in a jam. Like other HD Traffic ready devices in the TomTom range, a ruler on the right-hand side of the screen shows possible trouble spots on your journey and then gives you the option to avoid.

In practice and it's a system that works, and works well making this a necessity for all driving trips, and not just the ones where you don't know where you are going.

But wait, there's more.

Elsewhere music playback, which was added to version 1.2, will now fade in and out when instructions are given enabling you to hear what's going on.

Other features include automatic day/night mode based on sunrise/sunset times rather than actual light available, and of course the promise of the latest map data from TomTom owned Tele Atlas.

Disappointingly the company's successful Mapshare service that allows you to make and submit changes to the mapping data hasn't made it to this version. Let's hope for that next time.

Hoping to emulate Google Maps, TomTom has also introduced a pinch to zoom feature that lets you zoom out of where you are so you can see the surrounding map by pinching your fingers on the screen. It's something that up until now hasn't been possible and something most people believe would be.

Sounds great until you have a go. While the pinch to zoom works, you can't drag the map around the screen as pressing on the map launches the menu system. You might be able to pinch "out", but that's not much use if you can't re-centre your map.

App review: Dropbox - online back up of all your files!

For the geeky, sharing files with the world or other devices is all done via the FTP that you've got for your website or blog. It involves a stack of complicated codes, faffing around with FTP software and generally an interest in computers and the way the Internet works to get it to go. For the rest of us, there is dropbox.

Available for the Mac and PC (the iPhone has an app, and access though a mobile page is also offered) the concept is that it is a centralised folder that you have on all your computers or devices that allows you to automatically see what is in that folder be it on your work or home computer.

Sign up for an account, install the software and you can then instantly share documents, photos -pretty much all files - as long as they are in the that Dropbox folder. Within the folder itself can be further folders and better still you can give public or selected access to those folders if you want.

What it means for example is that if you save all your documents to that folder whenever you make a change and then save it, it is automatically updated on all your computers rather than just the one you are working on. In turn this means the hassle of transferring it to a USB drive or CD to then take home or in to the office doesn't exist.

Clever huh?

On the Mac the whole system is as if it isn't there. In fact the only way you'll know you've got it installed is the appearance of a Dropbox icon on the menu bar at the top of the screen and a folder that you can drop stuff into on your desktop.

Clicking on the icon in the menu bar gives you direct access to your Dropbox folder, tells you how much storage you've got left (in percentage form) and what the recently changed files are. Unfortunately it doesn't change colour to show you that a file has been changed - something that would have been nice if you were working with others on a number of files - but it's no deal breaker.

While the system is likely to help you if work from home or need to share photos with the family across different computers, where we can really see the success is in the ability to share folders with others.

A quick invite to a folder and companies could easy share work projects without having to email large files around. In our tests we were able to share large (100MB +) documents within the team easily and quickly (based on internet connection).

If you aren't fussed about private access to certain people you've invited there is a "Public" folder that allows you to dump files in and then dish out a URL to anyone. (As an aside, PR reading this review, this is a perfect way to share pictures and press releases with journalists.)

As we mentioned there is an iPhone app as well that allows you to access all the files on the system. We had no trouble viewing word documents or images and you can upload from the iPhone as well, handy if you need to share a picture without docking or emailing the photo.

Of course you might not be at your iPhone or your computer with the software installed. Don't panic, Dropbox appears to have thought of that too. Connected to the whole system is a simple website that once logged in allows you to view files you've got stored, view recent activity, and organise your sharing options.

It's basic, but it does mean that if you are at a random computer, be it in an internet café or someone's office you can still access the files.

It's free, so how can the company survive?

Well it comes down to the amount of storage you want. The basic or standard package, which is free, gives you 2GB of storage. That storage is upgradable either via paying cash or signing up friends (although that will only give you a maximum further 1GB).

The quickest way to get more storage space is to pay. Part with $8.99 a month and you can upgrade that storage quota to 50GB, opt for $19.99 a month and it jumps to the Pro 100 account that gives you, you guessed it 100GB of online storage to store your stuff, more than enough for most people.

1) Facebook

Unsurprising to find the ridiculously well visited social network and internet phenomenon at number one of the all time free apps for iPhone. All the same, it is an incredibly well put together piece of software with the last upgrade offering a great GUI incorporating a photos carousel and the ever increasing Facebook Places functionality. If you don't have it already, you probably don't have an iPhone. Free

2) eBay

Oddly, it's possibly not the best application for accessing this institution of an online auction website but it certainly does the trick. You can use the app for all the features you'd need off the top of your head, including monitoring your auctions, your watched items and your messaging centre as well. Free

3) Google Mobile

Google Mobile is the app that lets you experience some of those nice bits of software that Google made specially for Android but on the iPhone instead. New to the party is Google Goggles which sits alongside the Google Voice Search, Contact Search and some good old fashioned internet search as well. You can get round most of this with what's already on iOS but it's not quite the same. Free

4) Shazam

Around since the days when you actually had to dial numbers of an over the phone service, Shazam is still rocking it out on the iPhone. Yes, there are probably other bits of music recognition software out there these days but it's still done using one of the best systems around. The biggest improvement and change from the good old days is probably the way you can tag an organise the tracks you discover. Much better than when you had to scribble it down on a piece of paper. Free

5) Google Earth

What can often feel like a bit of a luxury on your desktop actually works out as a superb way to pass the time on the iPhone. Google Earth lets you travel from one side of the world to the other and all with the swish of your finger. Unlike Google Maps, you don't need a connection to be able to use it and it offers a much more flexible, geographic view of our planet and all that's there. Free

6) Skype

It's taken a while for Skype to turn up on the iPhone in full but it's just about made it. There's always been the chat element but, thanks to the front facing camera on the iPhone 4, you can now use the Skype app to make video calls over 3G or Wi-Fi. What that's going to cost you in data over mobile broadband is another thing though. Free

7) Movies by Flixter

Movies by Flixter, with Rotten Tomatoes is your one stop shop for heading out to the cinema or catching a film at home. It'll bring you cinema times and locations, lists of new release films and DVDs, film reviews courtesy of Rotten Tomatoes, show you trailers and even allow you to rent or but movies straight to your device. If you're into film and you watch them regularly, then this is the app to have. Free

8) Paper Toss

There had to be space somewhere for the original finger flicker and No.8 on the all time most downloaded free apps list is that place. What's great about this time wasting classic is that it actually depicts time wasting. It's all about chucking a screwed up piece of paper into a rubbish bin on the other side of a room. It's office basketball and just the kind of game you can imagine as the afternoon's activity at certain public companies. Still awesome. Free

9) Bump

Bump made its name as the app that was responsible for the 1 billionth download from the App Store and is an ever-so-slightly pointless but quite socially amusing way of transferring information from one phone to another by, essentially, bumping one handset into another. You can share music, photos, messages, videos, locations, calendar events, become Facebook friends and pretty much anything else you want. What's quite nice about it is that it's done privately via its own Bump internet servers.

10) Sky News

Quite a coup for Sky to get its news app onto this list but its managed it. One of the reasons might be that it's actually a really good app. It allows you to watch Sky News live over 3G or Wi-Fi as well as bring you stories from the UK, the world, stories on showbiz, sport and a weather forecast as well. Covers pretty much all the news you'd want to consume while on the hoof. Free

1) Angry Birds

More of a phenomenon than an app, Angry Birds was the stand out iPhone software story from 2010. It's spawned cuddly toys, comedy sketch videos, cakes, ginergbread houses, LEGO and iPhone accessories as well. If you haven't played it, it's all about a bunch of birds so incensed at having their eggs stolen by some pigs that they're willing to catapult themselves at their enemy to get them back. And please, don't ask us why the pigs green. We don't know. 59p

2) Doodle Jump

Doodle Jump, or Doodle Jump - BE WARNED: Insanely Addictive! to give it its full title, was the Angry Birds before Angry Birds turned up. It's still a great game as you guide Doodle the Doodler up and up and up the screen with the help of jet packs, propeller hats, rockets and all sorts and all by just using the accelerometer in your phone to steer him left and right. 59p

3) WhatsApp Messenger

If you haven't heard of WhatsApp Messenger, it's probably because you're on a contract with plenty of text messages. Its a service that turns all your chat, text, MMS and all that jazz into something that takes place over your data connection, be it 3G or Wi-Fi. As a result, there's not hidden costs, no international charges and no need to start adding buddies. It just uses your contacts book. 59p

4) Tap Tap Revenge 3

Guitar Hero/Rock Band but actually quite good on your phone. That's what Tap Tap Revenge 3 is all about. You don't have to try to cram your whole hand onto your mobile screen. It's just a case of tapping out some classics with three of your fingers. There's also a decent live chat system if you happen to have a connection. It's since been surpassed by Tap Tap Revenge 4 but not in terms of the stats. 59p

5) Pocket God

God games haven't been a particularly well catered for market on the iPhone. Whether it's because it's hard to fit the large scope of the concept onto a small screen or because Pocket God has already cleaned up is hard to tell. The game gets round the size issue by breaking the whole experience into mini episodes and by keeping enough humour to make the whole thing light. Well worth a play. 59p

6) Tunein Radion

Pretty much the best radio app out there, Tunein Radio allows you to access to all local AM and FM stations and with a seriously good interface as well. You can pause and rewind live transmissions up to 30 minutes back and use it to play MP3 and AAC files in the background while using other apps like Safari. It uses the RadioTime directory which offers around 40,000 shows and stations to choose from. 59p

7) Flight Control

Flight Control is a weirdly addictive game where you have to guide a constant stream of air traffic safely down onto the runway without crashing them into one another. All you need to do is swipe your finger around the phone screen to indicate the path you'd like each one to take. Naturally, the action gets faster and more furious as you get through the levels. Do real air traffic controllers play this? 59p

8) Bejeweled 2 + Blitz

Matching up different coloured shapes so that you clear them off the screen has never been so much fun. Well, apart from Tetris, of course, and all sorts of other similar games on the theme. All the same, Bejeweled 2 is the current puzzle app of choice and brings you all sorts of little boosts and bonuses as well as the Blitz version of the game which lets you play it over Facebook. 59p

9) Traffic Rush

Essentially the same theory as Flight Control but coming from the other direction is the success story that is Traffic Rush. Where the former is all about the path of movement, this one is all about the speed things happen. The idea is slow down and speed up cars at a crossroads junction to make sure they don't smash into each other and keep the traffic running smoothly. 59p

10) Tap Tap Revenge 2.6

Hmm, well, we reckon you've got a pretty good idea about this one given that we talked about its bigger brother just up there a few paragraphs. Naturally, there's no point in downloading this version especially as the most recent game in the series is actually free as well. All the same, if you really must it's 59p.

“Bubble Ball” by 14 year iPhone app developer tops Apple’s free games list

Giving seasoned iPhone app developers a serious run for their money, Robert Nay, a 14 year old whiz kid has created an iPhone application named “Bubble Ball” that has topped the Apple’s iTunes store for free games list.

Nay’s application has registered 2 million downloads to become one of the hottest free iPhone apps across the globe. The game has replaced “Angry Birds” from the top place in the store.

Robert Nay who conceptualized and programmed the game is an eighth grader living in Spanish Fork, Utah, and had created his first website while he was studying in third grade. The iOS version of the game was launched on December 29 and since then its popularity among the iphone users has been sky-rocketing.

Trapster - The iPhone App Warns You of Cops in the Area (5 Star ★★★★★)

Do you live in fear of speeding tickets? I no longer drive, but when I did, they were the bane of my existence. Too bad I wasn't a driver in the time of the iPhone, becauseTrapster is the latest app that I'm declaring brilliant.

With this free app, the theory is that you, as the driver (though I'd make the person riding shotgun do it for safety's sake), will just tap the app's map (which is following you via GPS) to report a cop car hiding out with his radar gun.

Reported cop car/radar gun sightings go to a database, which alerts other drivers with the app in the area that they should watch out. Verrrry sneaky.

Top iPhone apps that will let you call for FREE (VoIP)

Having an iPhone is nice and all, but calling isn't always free. Then there are those with other iOS devices, such as the iPad and the iPod Touch, both of those devices can be made into a phone if you'd like, thanks to some great VOIP apps that make free calling possible.

Have a look at the currently-available Apps that allow you to make VOIP calls on your iOS device:

1) Viber - Free Phone Calls

This a cool little App that's popular right now. Viber doesn't require you to create an account, doesn't need you to create a username or hand over a credit card number. The only catch is that to call someone, they must also have Viber. It creates an identity with your current number and only uses your minutes if the other user doesn't happen to have the App. Other highlights include the fact that it doesn't have Ads and that you can call anyone in the world so long as they use the same software.

This is one of our favorite Apps for VOIP calling. It's functional, and allows for free VOIP calling in the US and Canada. You also get push notifications when you receive a call. We haven't tried the international calls, but the developers claim it's cheap. Users can choose to use the paid service, the difference being a 30 second ad at the start of a phone call.

TruPhone is another VOIP app. The App Store page says that users can pay $12.95 per month to make unlimited calls to 38 countries, and mobile phones in nine countries. You can also call other Truphone, Skype and Gtalk users for Free over wifi.

Line2 is another popular App for VOIP calling. This one also adds unlimited SMS. It's free for the first 30 days, then costs $9.95 per month. It's nice in that it adds a second number to your iPhone. This can be useful if you want to have a phone number dedicated to work, business, etc. It's also cool that you can cancel with no penalties. They bill your card directly rather than your iTunes account.

5) Fring

Fring is a sweet App for those wanting to do video chat over a wifi connection. What's best about is that unlike FaceTime, it will allow you to chat with your Android friends as well. It's one of our favorite of the video chat-type Apps, simply because it works with devices other than the iPhone (such as the iPod Touch and the iPad, which reports say will add a FaceTime camera with the iPad 2).

6) Skype

Skype is always the obvious answer for VOIP calling. To be honest, we think the App is okay in comparison to what's out there, but its true value lies in its popularity. Skype is available for the major operating systems as well as mobiles. Even my mom (who is by no means the tech-type) has a Skype account. Because it's so widely used, it makes it easy to contact friends and family. In our case, some of the iSmashPhone staff keeps in touch over Skype, just because it allows us to interact directly, or call each other when something is easier to communicate through speech rather than through instant message.

Jailbreaking has gone into the cloud. Visit the Jailbreakme.com website on your iOS device, slide the big button on the front page (which cheekily mimics Apple’s slide-to-unlock button) and you’re done. It’s that easy. It works for iPhones (including the iPhone 4) and also iPads running iOS 3.2.1.
Jailbreaking – the unlocking of an iPhone or iPad to allow access to the file system and install any app you like – used to be done via your computer with a downloaded program. You’d plug in the iDevice and work from there. It was easy, but this is easier still. No doubt the US federal regulators’ recent ruling that jailbreaking is legal has emboldened the hackers: Apple can’t have the site taken down now, after all.
The cat and mouse game that is jailbreaking is not over, though: Just because unlocking your iPhone is now legal doesn’t mean Apple has to support it. The hack works through a PDF exploit in Mobile Safari. Comex, a member of the iPhone Dev Team (the jailbreaking people), uses Safari’s PDF decoder to run the code. Because Safari automatically opens PDFs, the jailbreak code is run. Expect Apple to close this hole in an update, if only for security purposes.
So how does it work? That depends. Our own Brian X Chen unlocked his iPhone 4 with no problems. He reverted almost immediately because Cydia, the unofficial App Store, has almost nothing in it that is optimized for the retina display. OThers have reported that FaceTime and MMS are broken. Currently, my 3G iPad is stuck in an endless loop and cannot get past the boot screen showing a single, lonely silver Apple. Needless to say, you should back up before trying this, and be aware that you are visiting a website that is doing some rather scary things to your iDevice.

Google Releases New Google Places App for IPhone

Google continued its recent trend of iOS app releases on Wednesday by introducing Google Places for iPhone and iPod touch.

Google Places is an app for discovering new places around you, rating your experiences, and sharing it all with friends. It looks like Google tore its place discovery feature out of Google Maps and sprinkled in some social elements in order to take on the likes of Yelp, Gowalla, Foursquare, and others.

The app offers nine icon slots of customizable, quick-access search categories such as "restaurants," "coffee," and "attractions." Google urges users to swap in their favorite types of destinations to make it easier to find the right spot while on-the-go.

You can also visit google.com/hotpot in a desktop browser to use some of Google Places's features, such as adding friends and rating places you've been to. This helps Hotpot--Google's name for its new personalized recommendation engine--to provide better results based not just on where you go, but the places your friends visit as well.

After slowing down its iOS releases following the Google Voice app removal episode, Google's gone on a bit of an App Store stocking spree lately. Last November it released its official Google Voice app and updated Google Docs to be editable on iPhone and iPad, then released an official app for Google Latitude, its location-based social network, in December.

Like the rest of Google's consumer products, Google Places is free. It requires an iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 3.0 or later.

Bridging the Camera and Facebook

Facebook's social networking service is built not just by its ability to comment and message other friends, but really the way that profiles can be built around uploaded and tagged photos. Here you provide a visual network between friends where each event is captured and then shared in a true social networking environment. Now that the smartphone has brought a digital camera into the pockets of so many Facebook users, the rate at which you can take a photo and then get it onto Facebook is increasing exponentially. With the Facebook iPhone app you have the ability to link together the iPhone's camera and your Facebook account by uploading directly from your iPhone. Here is a look at how to upload photos from the iPhone to Facebook easily.

The iPhone Facebook Upload Process

The easiest way to begin to upload photos from the iPhone to Facebook is to take a photo so that it will be saved onto the Camera Roll. You could also try to do a screenshot from an app in your iPhone or you can save a picture from your Safari web browser.

Open up the Facebook iPhone app, head to the nine paneled section, and then select Photos. Once your different photo albums become available go into one of them. The Mobile Uploads album tends to be the standard, but you can also build on other albums that are in your Facebook account. When you do open it you will see that there is a button in the upper right hand corner with a camera image in it. Press this button and you will get a prompt that asks you either to Take Photo or Choose From Library. You will want to select Choose From Library to select the image that you already captured, unless you want one spontaneously. This will open up your iPhone's Photo Albums, and you can then go to your Camera Roll, Photo Library, or anywhere else you have available to you. Find the photo you want, choose it, and then select the blue Upload button in the lower right hand corner. This will then automatically upload the photo from your iPhone to your Facebook account in that album.

If you want to upload photos from your iPhone to Facebook into a new album you can do this by creating a new album right from the start of the upload process. Back in the Photos main page where you choose albums you will need to press the "+" button in the upper right hand corner. Here you will add a name, location, and description for the new album you are creating. You can then upload photos from your iPhone to this new Facebook album.

Troubleshooting

Issues that could arise when you are uploading photos from the iPhone to Facebook are usually related either to errors in the Facebook iPhone app or your internet connection itself. If you find that the Facebook iPhone app is closing at some point during the process, or that you receive an error message, the first thing to try is to uninstall and reinstall the Facebook iPhone app. If your iPhone Facebook app is not up to date then an update is going to be in order, so it may be worth observing incremental updates if you plan on uploading photos from your iPhone to Facebook regularly.

Second to this, you may need to troubleshoot an interruption in the iPhone photo upload process by checking your internet connection. First, you should check out your service for the area. Try to switch to an available Wi-Fi network for a better upload speed and reliable upload rate. Uploading a single photo from the iPhone to Facebook should be very quick and if it takes more than a few seconds then this is an indication that there is some kind of interference.

iPhone 4 Features

The iPhone 4 features can be divided up into five headings - Facetime, Retina Display, Multi-tasking, HD Recording and Editing, and a 5MP Camera with LED Flash. These features are what Apple is using to market the latest version of one of their most celebrated products and these features will also be the reason why you want to have an iPhone 4. Let's take a closer and look at what each of these features has to offer.

Facetime - The iPhone 4 will have a front-facing camera which will make video conferencing finally a reality for the iPhone platform. What's good about the cameras is that you can use both of them for video calling or what Apple calls "Facetime." So, you can either let the person you are talking to see your face or switch to the back camera to let that person see what's around you. While this may seem a welcome improvement to the iPhone 3GS, there is one caveat here - Facetime will only work on an iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 basis.

Retina Display - To put it bluntly, Retina display is Apple's counter to their rivals AMOLED (or Super AMOLED) displays. According to Apple, it's a huge improvement from the iPhone 3GS display capability. It's the sharpest, most vibrant display resolution for the iPhone yet. As such the iPhone 4 will display text in books, web pages, and email crisply no matter what the size is. Of course, it follows that photos and movies will be displayed stunningly as well. Thanks to the iPhone 4 display's high pixel density which is so high that individual pixels are indistinguishable.

Multi-tasking - What can we say? This is one of the most wanted features of the iPhone 4 especially since rival smartphones already offer it. Finally, Apple is bringing multi-tasking to the iPhone 4. With multi-tasking you can switch between running apps without needing to restart each app, receive voice calls while keeping an app open, listen to music, keep GPS running all the time, and of course, complete tasks in the background.

HD Video Recording and Editing - Move over Flip camcorder and the likes, for here comes Apple's take on the handy and mobile video camcorder market. iPhone 4 will let you shoot, edit and share 720p HD video at 30fps. Even more fun is the fact that you don't have to download your video to your Mac anymore for editing purposes. You can edit it right on youriPhone using the upcoming iMovie app for iPhone. Now, this is one feature that will surely make you want the iPhone 4.

5-MP Camera with LED Flash - 5-megapixel may not be that high, especially since some smartphones already offer 8-MP cameras, but hey, it's a big improvement from the Phone 3GS 3.2MP camera, right? To be honest the first time I had my iPhone 3G, the first thing that made me fall in love with it was the elegant design and well crafted form factor of the phone. Stainless Steel Band - Let's see, made from alloy, forged to five times stronger than steel, impressive structural rigidity, and thin and refined design - I told you the iPhone's design is a result of great craftmanship, right?

Gyro + Accelerometer - If the iPhone 3G and 3GS accelerometer blew you away the first time, this time around it's even better with the addition of what Apple calls "GYRO." It's a built-in 3-axis gyroscope which, when combined with the accelerometer, provides advanced motion sensing such as full acceleration, full 3D attitude and rotation rate. Should you get the iPhone 4? That depends on several factors. First, if you're an iPhone user since the first generation that means you're probably a loyal iPhone user. And there's no doubt that you'll be getting the iPhone 4. In fact, you must have pre-ordered it already and be eagerly awaiting June 24th. If that's the case, I envy you.

If you're not an iPhone early adopter and skipped the iPhone 3G and 3GS waiting for the ultimate iPhone version - this is it. Here's the most advanced iPhone that you've been waiting for. Don't even start telling me that you'd wait for the updated version of iPhone 4 later on. I'm pretty sure that if that's the case, you won't be using an iPhone anymore.

Bottomline is - the iPhone 4 is a great smartphone, worthy of the Apple brand. And because of this Apple branding the iPhone 4 can compete with other smartphones which are far more advanced technically speaking. Yes, I agree with you iPhone haters but this will not prevent me from wanting (and for sure I'm going to have) the iPhone 4. It's the greatest iPhone that Apple has made so far. Loosely defined Social Networking sites function as an online community of users, and depending on the site in particular, can be grouped with common interests, friends, sharing information and any interaction you can have with others online.

Facebook

Initially intended for college students it is estimated that over 500 million people are now on Facebook, and if you're reading this I'd guess you are one of them. The app itself is easy to navigate, gives you most of the features from the site but could do with some improvement in terms of chat. Twitter

Now there aren't many people who haven't heard of Twitter. With the press it gets from celebrities 'tweeting' their responses to the media and world events, it has to be one of the most infamous forms of social networking. The way it works is you create an account which takes about a minute and your username will have '@' before it, for example @redhourben is Ben Stiller. You can then start tweeting, or writing your thoughts, opinions, what you're doing and so on in the form of a micro blog of 140 characters. Meebo sets the standard for consolidating your chat services. It supports Facebook, AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), Yahoo! To use simply create an account which takes a matter of seconds and just input your usernames for the social networking accounts you use.

It has an easy to navigate interface, the three main pages are Buddies, Chat and Accounts. To start a conversation you just tap the name and begin, a definite plus is the addition of the landscape keyboard. With all the major networks covered, the only omission is Skype which is not ideal, but when you have everything else for free it's hard to not love this app!

LinkedIn, used by professionals is a business oriented social network and has in the region of 80 million users worldwide. With its very recent bug fixes it now has even better ease of use and the crashing problem seems to have been resolved.

Windows Live Messenger

Windows Live Messenger is jam packed with features which make this app one of the top free social networking iPhone apps to have. Firstly you have the options to check your hotmail and IM your friend's lists in real time from WLM and Yahoo! Messenger with the option to appear as available, busy, away or offline. You can also view photos and comment on status updates from Windows Live, Facebook and MySpace and see what your friends are sharing on other sites such as YouTube and Flickr. Another great advance in the IM world of social networking is Fring. Integrating Google Talk, MSN/WLM, Yahoo! Messenger, Facebook, AIM Twitter and SIP so all your contacts are accessible in one place, with the added feature of easy to use 2-way video chat to any other fringsters.

The only gripe after the latest update seems to be not being able to chat in landscape mode, but if you're used to the iPhone keyboard this shouldn't bother you.

Yahoo! Messenger

As we couldn't choose between Fring and Yahoo! Messenger we had to include this great free iPhone app. Yahoo! Messenger already has a huge following and we can see why. With one to one streamed live video calls, being able to access another app with this running in the background, free SMS messages along with the standard IM, push notifications, sharing photos, adding WLM to your buddy list, checking Yahoo! email and use of emoticons, Yahoo! is definitely at the top of its game in the IM stakes.

The ease of use adds to the attractiveness of this IM app which can do much more.

Skout Dating

Most of the dating apps out there may be free to download, but then you'll be hit with costly memberships when you want to make contact with another single. Skout Dating is different, apart from being free there are almost one million members and it's growing by the day. Simply create your account and start chatting. It will tell you who is in a nearby radius to you and you can chat, share pictures, send egifts, get push notifications, and see who thinks you're 'hot'.

Overall, for a free iPhone app this is as feature rich as most paid dating sites and definitely worth a try!

Bump

No top free iPhone applications list is complete without Bump. Again, a slightly different approach to social networking where you can actually share with your friends your photos, music, contacts and calendar events (iOS4 only) and become friends on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. You can pick what information to send over so if you have any private things just remember not to include them in the bump! Whoever you share your information with will also need to have Bump installed on their iPhone but once the data is selected the process is simple.

iPhone 4 - The smart phone gets smarter with "Find My iPhone"

Find My iPhone is now free for anyone with an iPhone 4, iPad, or 4th generation iPod touch (iOS 4.2 required).* Just sign in with your Apple ID on your qualifying device and turn on Find My iPhone to enable your device to be located. Then use the same account to enable Find My iPhone on your other iOS 4.2 devices including iPhone 3G, 3GS, or iPod touch (2nd generation or later). Find My iPhone is also included in the paid MobileMe subscription.

If you lose your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch while on the go, simply install the Find My iPhone app on another iOS device, launch it, and sign in with your Apple ID (Find My iPhone must already be configured on the missing device).

You’ll see your device’s location on a map and you can choose to have it display a message or play a sound, remotely lock the device, or wipe it to permanently delete all of your data if you think that it won’t be returned. For added security, the app will automatically sign you out after 15 minutes, or you can manually sign out at any time.

iMovie for iPhone is the official Apple application that lets iPhone users record and edit high-definition video to publish directly to YouTube or send via MMS and e-mail.

The application, available for $4.99, is simple to use and yet surprisingly feature-rich for something on a mobile device.
