This past Friday TweetDeck version 1.1 was released and it seems as if some of the kinks were never worked out of it before it was submitted to Apple. Namely constant crashing. The new update has been submitted to the App Store and hopefull should be live soon.

In a nutshell, it seems Apple is busy prepping a 2.8-inch (compared to the current 3.5-inch) version of the iPhone that will boast a new Qualcomm chip that will mean it will work globally on both UMTS 3G and CDMA mobile phone networks.

Said to be due to Verizon in Q3 of 2010, despite the operator’s continued iPhone bashing, the iPhone nano is said to be planned for worldwide distribution too - a single handset to all carriers, regardless of the tech of their network. AppleInsider’s source, OTR Global, says that Asustek subsidiary Pegatron will build the new hybrid phone devices for Apple rather than Hon Hai, the iPhone’s current manufacturer and that “Verizon and Apple have already hammered out an agreement to sell the new iPhone model within the year”.

Shazam Entertainment has just launched a new music identifying app for the iPhone titled Shazam Encore, which is now available in the App Store for $4.99, and as a result of this, the free Shazam iPhone app has been crippled to only allow you to identify up to five songs per month.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the move to a paid version simply had to be done thanks to a slumping economy. Shazam Entertainment’s chief executive Andrew Fisher stated that the company just wasn’t making enough off of in-app advertisements and iTunes downloads to sustain its current business model.

Mr. Fisher says mobile advertising was one of the first victims of the recession, and he doesn’t expect ad rates to bounce to levels to sustain free apps for at least two years.

Fisher further backed up that statement by saying the company makes most of its money by selling the app to paying customers on other platforms or through deals with wireless carriers. But Shazam Entertainment isn’t just limiting its free app to get customers to pay for Encore, they are also trying to sweeten the deal by adding features to the paid version.

Shazam Encore contains all of the free version’s features, such as the ability to share tags through a variety of services and purchase music directly through iTunes, but it also features a new interface, many speed improvements, music recommendations, hot and popular music charts, the ability to search for music by artist, album, or track, a drive and tag mode that makes it easier to discover music while the device is docked, and, of course, unlimited song tagging.

What do you folks think? Are the new features, improved speed, and improved interface enough to get you to drop $4.99 on what could be considered a novelty app? Or are you just going to stick with the free version since you get five tags per month anyway? [via appadvice]

Domino’s Pizza have launched their Australian iPhone App this week, allowing customers on a friday night who are too out of it to make a phone call, simply use their iPhone and order at their leisure. We tested the app extensively this weekend, and yes, it works, and it actually works very VERY well.

Want an iPhone app business without all the boring hassle of actually programming and releasing iPhone apps? Boy, does Brice Milliorn have a deal for you!

He’s auctioning off his iPhone app business, which he says has 87 different apps for sale, over on eBay. Milliorn says he started out developing apps on his own, but the business is just too big for him to keep up so he’s selling all of the apps and their rights, all of the source code, and technical support for two months to transition everything over to the new owner. He doesn’t specifically say that he’ll transfer the developer account on Apple’s App Store to your name (he says he’ll send over a DVD with the source code and transfer “the whole kit and caboodle” to you), but we presume that’s what will happen — of course if you go for it, you’re doing this at your own risk.

What will a burgeoning App Store business, complete with apps like iSexyRef and Swine Flu cost you? Just a cool $100 grand. That’s the starting bid in the eBay auction, which has just over a week left and no bids as of this writing.

There are certainly less expensive ways to get started selling apps on the store. It only costs $100 to register in Apple’s Developer Program for a year, and then you just need to find a developer you can pay — or even do it yourself with a helper service).

A report by OTR Global says Apple will launch a new ‘worldmode’ iPhone in Q3 2010 with a smaller 2.8″ screen. The report which was provided to AppleInsider cites sources in the Taiwan handset supply chain.

It claims that Apple has contracted Asustek subsidiary Pegatron to build a new hybrid phone which will work will all global handset carriers whether UMTS or CDMA. Apparently the phone will gain compatibility with CDMA2000 networks (including Verizon) while still keeping compatibility with UMTS 3G networks using a new hybrid chip produced by Qualcomm. The phone is also said to have a smaller 2.8″ screen. Interestingly, in June, 2008 component photos of a smaller 2.8″ screen were posted by iLounge.

A Taiwanese company claimed they were going to be used in an upcoming iPhone. The OTR report also claims that despite Verizon’s ad campaign that attacked Apple the company did manage to hammer out an agreement with Apple to sell the iPhone within the year.

RadioShack has announced that they will carry the iPhone in stores beginning later this month

These additional outlets will provide Apple with a greater retail presence during the holidays and perhaps easy the burden off the very busy Apple Stores.

A highly reliable source has informed me that Apple has built some prototypes of the next gen iPhone with an RFID reader built in and they have seen it in action. So its not full NFC but its a start for real service discovery and I’m told that the reaction was very positive that we can expect this in the next gen iPhone.

iControlPad, a physical control pad in the works for the iPhone has received a huge design change according to the creators. In February a test run of the originally designed prototypes shipped.

Feedback suggested that the design work but needed to be altered for each iPhone model, the controls were a bit cramped and the unit was quite large to carry. We were not 100% happy with this. If we are going to do this we want to do it right. As some of you know we have access to the parts used on the openPandora handheld - which has dual analogue nubs.

A sleepless night then resulted a huge design change.

1. Download BlackRa1n for either Mac or PC here
2. Plug in your iPhone  
3. Run BlackRa1n
   
4. Hit the “Make it rain” button to jailbreak your iPhone. Your iPhone 3GS will almost immediately reset, and will soon display a picture of iPhone hacker Geohot. The entire process should take about 45-60 seconds. Do not interrupt this process by unplugging the cable or tinkering with your iPhone.
5. Once your iPhone has fully booted: Congratulations! Your iPhone is now jailbroken.
6. Look for the Blackra1n icon on your iPhone’s homescreen. Open the Blackra1n app
7. Tap the label that reads “sn0w”, then hit the Install button in the upper right. This will unlock your phone for use on any SIM-compatible carrier, and reenable the IPCC hack required to enable tethering.. This part should take about 30 seconds.
8. Once the unlock is complete, open Safari. Navigate to:
http://m.peacefulinsanity.com/Tether.mobileconfig
9. Hit the “Install” button in the upper right. Confirm the resulting prompt, alerting you that the file has not been signed. Allow the IPCC file to install, which will take about 10 seconds.
10. Close Safari. Hold the sleep and home button until your iPhone resets. This reboot may take a bit longer than normal.
11. When your iPhone resets, go into Settings > General > Network > Internet Tethering. If you can successfully switch the “Internet Tethering” slider to “On”: Congratulations! Everything seems to have worked as expected.  
12. From here, tethering is a matter of following the on-screen instructions. Enjoy your jailbroken, tetherable iPhone 3G/3GS on OS 3.1/3.1.2! If you’ve gotten this far, we’d recommend installing Cydia (just open up blackra1n and tap the Cydia label). You should also consider allowing Cydia to record the signature hashes of your device once installed; be it that Apple patches this exploit in the next release, you’ll most likely need those to get back to a jailbroken state.

Google Wave promises to be the ‘next big thing’ in communication, and collaborations online, like we really need ANOTHER way to talk to our friends online. Anyway, Google seem to think that even though they own Orkut, a relatively average Social Network site, they also should have a similar sort of thing for business users. Adding realtime playback of conversations, or ‘waves’, Google Wave is essentially a better version of Basecamp and Campfire from 37 Signals. We’ve been using it with a limited number of users, and in it’s current alpha stage, no one is overly impressed. Maybe when it comes in to beta, or in to 1.0 official release, there will be more features that will make Google Wave an essential tool for everyone.

Waveboard is the ‘first’ Google Wave app for iPhone, that has been launched alongside their desktop client for Mac. However, both the iPhone app and the Desktop app seem to just be apps that pull the Google Wave website in to an app window, making it look like a ‘real’ app, however they are just wrapping the website essentially.

One of the (two) selling points on the app is: “Use this tool to get Google Wave on your springboard screen. “… Ummm… if you hit the ‘+’ button in Safari, you can also do that (for free!) with a the official Google Wave icon too.

Ultimately, is this worth $1.19? not really in our opinion. You can get exactly the same features AND LOOK AND FEEL simply by heading to safari, and hitting up wave.google.com.

VERDICT: 30% - Use the web app that is FREE from Google.

CNet have tried to be all controversial with this article this week, stating the iPhone is the worst phonecall making phone ever. Here’s their comments:

CNet UK has written an article concluding that the iPhone is the worst phone in the world.

That’s right, we said it — and we’re not taking it back. The iPhone may be the greatest handheld surfing device ever to rock the mobile Web, and a fabulous media player to boot. It may be the highest-rated mobile phone on CNET UK, rocking the pockets of half of our crack editorial team. It’s certainly the touchscreen face that launched a thousand apps. But as an actual call-making phone, it’s rubbish, and we aim to prove it.

The article praises the iPhone for being the best handheld computer there is; however, goes on to describe how it fails when it comes to call quality, dropped calls and data gaps, receiving calls, heat, and battery life. Many of these same criticisms have been leveled against the iPhone in American although its usually AT&T that takes the blame. Interestingly the article mentions a report in Ny Teknik that claims the most likely cause of the 3G problems is defective adjustments between the antenna and an amplifier that captures very weak signals from it.

We don’t seem to have any more troubles with lost calls compared with any of the other phone brands… Maybe CNet simply have bad reception in their offices… lol.

A Dutch hackers has shown the simplicity of an iPhone hack. Countless numbers of jailbroken devices were hacked by using a port scanning technique along with some networking smarts. After the guy gained access he saw that the jailbroken devices had unchanged root passwords along with SSH enabled. If you were hacked the following message popped up on your screen:

“If you don’t pay, it’s fine by me, but remember, the way I got access to your iPhone can be used by thousands of others-they can send text messages from your number (like I did), use it to call or record your calls, and actually whatever they want, even use it for their hacking activities! I can assure you, I have no intention of harming you or whatever, but, some hackers do! It’s just my advice to secure your phone.”

No harm was done, as he promises. He just wanted to teach people a lesson. When I read this I immediately disabled SSH on my jailbroken iPhone 3GS. Luckily I change my password every now and then. The App Store contains more than enough GPS-enabled vehicle locating apps, but Intridea’s new Car Finder iPhone app utilizes augmented reality to help you remember where your vehicle is parked, which makes finding it a more entertaining experience. Car Finder is extremely easy to use. Just launch the app and tap the button located at the bottom of the screen to mark your current position.

The app uses a GPS signal to pinpoint your location, so make sure your signal strength is at least decent. If it isn’t, the app will inform you of this and you can check to see just how accurate your location is in meters in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.

When you mark your position, you can give it a name and add info to help you remember the general vicinity of where you are parked, but it isn’t required. After you are all set up, just walk away and go do your deeds. When it’s time to locate your vehicle again, launch the app and the augmented reality overlay will have a red arrow pointing in the direction of your car. If the car icon isn’t in view, just turn and follow the arrow until it is. Car Finder will show you the distance to your parking spot in real-time.

Car Finder’s accuracy depends heavily on your GPS signal, so use with caution. The iPhone 3GS is the only device supported by Car Finder since it requires GPS and a compass to do all of the tracking. Car Finder is available in the App Store for $.99.

With more and more companies launching iPhone apps in parallel to their printed or TV campaigns it looks like the App Store definitely entered marketers’ tool kits. Pizza Hut, trusting the App Store promotion power, made its own iPhone app that lets you order Pizza directly from your iPhone with a 20% rebate and well, it paid off. In only three months since its launch, Pizza Hut app already generated $1 million in sales, exceeding all their expectations. Bernard Acoca, senior director of digital marketing for Pizza Hut told MobileMarketer:

We always saw a steady level of growth with our mobile business via our WAP site, but to be candid it wasn’t the explosive level of growth we’ve seen with the iPhone app. IPhone applications capture consumers’ imagination in a way that WAP sites simply can’t do, so the decision to expand to the iPhone was as good one for us.

Last month a SIM card tray turned up claiming to be for the next version of the iPhone. Today a midboard for the fourth gen iPhone has tipped up. It’s hard to say if these are legit products or nothing more than a way to get attention. The company promises pics of the back cover for the fourth gen iPhone soon.

China Unicom has reported that a paltry 5,000 new subscribers is all that has purchased the iPhone in China since it launched last week. That is really no surprise considering that the official iPhone costs more than grey market devices available in the country with more features. Intel has released an official comment on the issue that some users are reporting with certain Intel-based systems not synchronizing the iPhone with the latest iTunes version.

Intel says that it believes the problem to be with BIOS or system configuration, but it is still investigating.

Theiphoneblog reports:

Orange UK is set to break O2’s iPhone exclusivity… if not their price points with theannouncement of their pay monthly, pay as you go, and for business plans.

What did we notice off the top? Depending on how much you pay on contract or up front, your iPhone hardware cost can go down to as little as free or climb to as much as £539 for an iPhone 3GS on PAYG. (Also, PAYG plans named Monkey, Dolphin, Canary, Racoon, and Camel? Where’s John Cleese to “spokesperson” that when you need him…)

Unlimited internet and Wi-Fi, however, carry a “fair usage policy of 750MB/month” proviso, which looks rather pathetic next to unofficial US caps of 5GB. Good on them for not hiding it, but placing that paltry figure anywhere close to “unlimited” probably means they shouldn’t use “unlimited” to begin with.

Not much in terms of cutting O2’s pricing though. Maybe Vodafone will feel a bit more daring?

Flurry have conducted a survey to find out how many people use an app from than 100 times in a month, now lets get this clear… that is just 3 times a day… Seriously… how does using an app 3 times a day qualify you as ‘an addict’… So if I make 5 phone calls, and send 10 SMS a day, that means I’ve used two apps a total of 15 times already. The figure for app addicts should be way more like 50 times a day… for those people who check facebook constantly, or who Twitter every aspect of their life. This survey, is really pointless, and I’m now not sure why I’ve reported it.

Blackra1n comes out tomorrow, and we’ve got hold of a sneak peak of the new screenshot.

The screen shot shows an iPhone using T-Mobile, the two installer packages available; Cydia and Rock, as well as the talked-about unlock blacksn0w. Curiously missing from the screen is the third installer we usually see: Icy. Geohot intentionally left the third installer behind and asked his Twitter followers if anyone will “really miss Icy?”

“two things about the support email, it only speaks english and it doesn’t have a beta or the source code or untetheredeness… oh and they also don’t know anything about unannounced features or what i do in my spare time…. last thing, blackra1n.support cannot change the release date, it’s 4 freaking days away, be patient.”

According to MobileCrunch, the state of New York has enacted a 100 percent ban on texting while driving. So whether you are new to driving, a bus driver, or a seasoned veteran, police officers can now issue you a fine of up to $150 for driving while typing on your mobile device. New York is not the first state to enact such a ban, actually not even close; but what is fairly unique to New York’s ban is that it is a secondary enforcement law, which means you can’t be pulled over just for texting. An officer must have a primary reason, such as speeding or swerving, to pull you over, and then if they discover that you have been texting while driving they can issue you a fine.

Many other states in the U.S. with similar bans allow officers to pull you over simply for texting while driving. In other news, the New York Times recently did a study which revealed that about 97 percent of Americans believe texting while driving should be illegal. To take it one step further, 50 percent of those polled stated that the punishment for texting while driving should be as severe as drunk driving.

AppAdvice report this news: iPhone’s inability to read Flash is an ever going story between Apple and Adobe. Originally due to Flash Player eating up too much resources it slowly became a little bit of a tension point between the two big companies. Adobe announced many times being ready for the iPhone and having betas already running but Apple never went Adobe’s way. The story continues now with Adobe adopting a new “passive-aggressive” position as Engadget calls it. If you go to Adobe’s Flash Player download page from your iPhone you’ll be getting a nice little explanation about the state of the issue, it might seem a little straight forward but come on Apple, why can’t we have Flash?

BeeJive IM for iPhone and iPod touch has just gone 3.1 and now includes group chats (on IM services that support the feature, AIM, Yahoo!, GTalk, MSN), and meta chats (allows you to merge contacts with multiple IM services into a consolidated stream — So Bob’s AIM and Bob’s Gtalk just show up under Bob).

Flurry, the San Francisco-based mobile analytics company that told us about app addiction earlier today came up with some interesting new App Store charts. They’ve been watching the number of newly accepted apps to the App Store since its launch and the proportions really didn’t change much for over a year, games were always the number one category. Surprisingly the tendency suddenly changed this September, the amount of newly released Ebooks started to rise and quickly overtook games in the App Store. It looks like Book Editors are porting their entire catalogs to the iPhone, exactly what happened with Game Editors a year ago:

In October, one out of every five new apps launching in the iPhone has been a book. Publishers of all kinds, from small ones like Your Mobile Apps to mega-publishers like Softbank, are porting existing IP into the App Store at record rates. [...] we observed that during the month of August 1% of the entire U.S. population was already reading a book on the iPhone. Now, with books shipping in droves, we are seeing the supply-side explode.
