Well currently Apple and AT&T have banned this feature, due to what they call ‘bandwidth issues’…

We would all love to be able to stream video from the iPhone directly over 3G to our friends and family, basically in an iChat or Skype video sort of manner. AT&T have kicked up a fuss and basically Apple have banned this feature from upcoming app Qik to keep AT&T happy.

iTwitter unexpectedly beat out Twittelator, Tweetie, Twitterrific, Tweetdeck, Twitterfon and all the other major iPhone Twitter apps to become the first true Push-enabled Twitter client on iPhone. iTwitter pushes mentions and direct messages.

However, there is a catch and it’s a big one. Push notifications are only received if the other person is using iTwitter too. So basically, its not that useful.

At the last minute, Facebook have announced just before release of Facebook 3.0 for iPhone, that the latest revision of the killer app will include Video Uploads on the iPhone 3GS. No more news than that right now, but this is the first app that has been announced to use the Video API, so it will be interesting to see how it all goes!

The first ever iPhone 3GS jailbreak application has finally been released by long-time Apple hacker, George Hotz. It’s currently Windows-only (7 not supported), the latest iTunes installed, and an iPhone 3GS with the 3.0 firmware.

To get started right now, go to purplera1n.com. Download it. Make sure you have windows (but not 7), the latest iTunes installed, and an iPhone 3GS with 3.0 firmware. Connect your iPhone normally. Click “make it ra1n”. Wait. On bootup, run Freeze, the purplera1n installer app. Hopefully you’ll figure out what to do from there. Best tutorial gets linked to from purplera1n site. This tool is beta. Make sure to have everything backed up before running. Also if Cydia doesn’t show up after running Freeze, reboot.

Despite the fact it doesn’t unlock the iPhone 3GS, it still jailbreaks it so that unofficial third-party apps can be installed and enjoyed on your new iPhone 3GS. The jailbreak for Mac is coming soon.

UPDATE #1: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Mac OS X - ALL SUPPORTED NOW

UPDATE #2: We’ve jailbroken our 3GS successfully and in literally 2 minutes with this process, there are no awkward IPSW files to deal with, simply open the app and hit the button. The longest part of the jailbreak is waiting for the iPhone to reboot.

Since the release of the original iPhone in 2007, Apple’s smartphone has been on a steady climb upwards, taking huge chunks of the U.S. mobile phone market and giving even the BlackBerry a run for its money. The arrival of the iPhone 3G S and the $99 iPhone only bring Apple one step closer to market domination.

Abroad though, the story has been more difficult to decipher. In an April piece, Wired’s Brian Chen stated that the Japanese hated the iPhone, which sparked a big debate over the iPhone’s appeal (and the piece’s accuracy). Now though, a new survey paints a drastically different story: the iPhone is now the #1 and #2 best selling smartphone in Japan.

This was reported BEFORE the 3GS release, it will be interesting to see how the new iPhone affects these facts.

A leaked memo from AT&T to staff:

“iLaunch day 2009 was one for the record books, as AT&T customers scrambled to get their hands on the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet.

Here’s a look at some of the milestones we achieved:

• Best-ever sales day in our retail stores
• Second-largest traffic day in our retail stores
• Most transactions processed via our IT systems in a single day
• Most upgrade eligibility checks in a single day
• Largest order day in att.com history
• Largest features sales day in att.com history

On this year’s launch day, iPhone sales exceeded sales recorded on 2008’s iPhone launch day, Black Friday 2008 and Dec. 26, 2008 — all heavy-volume sales days. In fact, this year we surpassed 2008’s launch day sales at about noon Central time, and sustained our previous peak hour record, also set in 2008, for 11 straight hours.

A major vulnerability in how the iPhone handles SMS has been found by security researcher Charlie Miller. During a presentation at the SyScan conference in Singapore, Miller announced the vunerability and warned of its capabilities.

“The SMS vulnerability allows an attacker to run software code on the phone that is sent by SMS over a mobile operator’s network. The malicious code could include commands to monitor the location of the phone using GPS, turn on the phone’s microphone to eavesdrop on conversations, or make the phone join a distributed denial of service attack or a botnet.”

According to HotHardware, Miller has made an arrangement with Apple giving them until the Black Hat USA expo in Las Vegas to fix the issue. Apple says they will have a fix ready “later this month.”

Imagine being able to have your iPhone flip from Ringer to Silent the minute the GPS notices you are at work. Well along with a slew of other patents today, Apple have patented this sort of technology. This is particularly handy, if the iPhone knows you are running, and so diverts all your calls to voicemail, until you slow to a walking pace. We’re not sure when this will surface but it will be very nice to have your iPhone react to your surroundings like that. Stay tuned.

Apple has published a very interesting patent application in which they explore how to provide a Karaoke experience on the iPhone. Not only would users be able to sing along with their favorite songs, but Apple wants to give real-time feedback to singers letting them know how they are doing.

Rolando 2 improves upon the existing Rolando formula by adding a “2.5D” display system which provides a 3D-looking environment to travel across. Beyond just this aesthetic change, the game also introduces a number of new characters, skills, weapons/vehicles and puzzles throughout the game’s 46 levels. The game shares the same basic controls as the original game with tilt movements to roll the Rolandos and swipe controls to jump.

Are you fed up with typing in your favourite websites in to the small Safari bar on your iPhone? There is a simple way to gain easy access to your favourite websites quickly, and here’s how.

1. Navigate to your favourite website
2. Touch the “+” icon at the bottom of the screen
3. Touch “Add to Home Screen”
4. Enter a name for your shortcut
5. Voilá… you now have created your own icon that will open Safari and your favourite site with just one click.

One of the most addictive games on iPhone is now two player, simply both have the app on your iPhone and you can play head to head and help land all those aircrafts in a ridiculously small airport. Just when you thought this game couldn’t get any more fun, it does.

We tested the load times of the iPhone 3GS vs the iPhone 3G. Apple have been banging on about how much faster the iPhone 3GS is, but is it really worth the $1000 for the 7.2mbps 3G connection. The video certainly reveals that the iPhone 3GS now boasts download speeds that are close to broadband speeds. (Ironically, iPhone User Guide took longer to load on the Mac than the iPhone, but we’re blaming that on the lame internet in our office!)

So in our test (we ran this test at least 3 times to make sure it wasn’t some weird anomaly with the mobile networks) we found the iPhone 3GS to be 2.5x faster when it comes downloading over the cellular network.

*Obviously we were running this test on two different networks, but in all our previous tests we’ve found both networks to run at almost exactly the same speed.

In a statement on the company’s website the operator says:

“iPhone 3GS is currently out of stock: Due to the phenomenal demand for the new iPhone 3GS, we’ve temporarily run out of stock online, over the phone and in our retail stores”.

O2 says that it expects additional stock of the new iPhone 3GS to be available online, over the phone and in their retail stores at the end of this week. As a consolation, the operator says that the iPhone 3G 8GB model is still currently available. However, the news comes as many customers are complaining that the white version of the new handset is already starting to discolour over time due to heat issues.

• Updated modem firmware to 5.08.01
• Improvements to OpenGL and Quartz
• APIs to allow third party apps to access videos and edit them

A new version of Facebook for iPhone OS 3.0 is coming very soon with 15 major improvements including Events, according to developer Joe Hewitt.

Firemint have posted this on their blog. Firemint are the makers of Real Racing on the iPhone.

Real Racing has up to six cars on the track at any one time. Since the game uses a high fidelity physics engine, adding cars is a good test for pushing the hardware. We started our tech demo with 8 cars on the track, then 10, 12, 16 and 20, and the 3GS still didn’t break a sweat. We finally stopped when we got to 40 cars on the track at the same time, still with no perceptible drop in frame rate. We think the results are mind blowing.

Edovia has announced that Rocket Taxi has shipped and is now available on the App Store. Rocket Taxi, uses the device’s Location Services to find nearby taxi companies. The new 2.0 versions has several improvements such as faster results and better overall performance.

Search has been extended to taxi companies and the biggest new feature is the new map system that is powered by Apple’s MapKit. This new map is far more precise than on the older version and lets the user interact with it. Moreover, i addition to the estimated fare, Rocket Taxi 2.0 now shows you the best route between your starting and destination points.

“Rocket Taxi has been a hit since it’s release and we’re very happy to release this new version. With the new integrated map, the app is a lot more useful and when Apple announced MapKit, we were quickly at work to improve our best selling app”, said Luc Vandal, founder of Edovia Inc. “We have also fixed a lot of bugs and polished the overall user experience and feel that the app is very solid and a must have update.”

Remember the Milk, a to do list and task management application, is adding iPhone Push Notifications.

We’ve also snuck in one much-requested bonus feature: Push Notifications. For those not familiar with this new feature in iPhone OS 3.0, the Apple Push Notification service allows RTM to send instant task reminder alerts to your device.

After updating and launching the RTM app, you’ll be prompted to allow Push Notifications for RTM: Once allowed, RTM will start sending reminders to your device via the Push Notification service.

Apple has told news agencies that Steve Jobs is now back at work.

“Steve Jobs is back to work. He is at Apple a few days a week and working from home the other days,” Apple spokesman Steve Dowling said. “We’re glad to have him back.” It was recently confirmed that Steve Jobs underwent a liver transplant at the Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute.

They say Mr. Jobs is now recovering well and has an excellent prognosis. “It should give investors confidence in Apple’s three-to- five year road map,” said Gene Munster, an analyst with Piper Jaffray & Co. “Having Steve Jobs back means they got the visionary back.”
