However, their record, strong passing attack, running game, solid offensive line and hard-nose defense negates the notion that they don't belong. They do, and God bless Notre Dame this Saturday evening.

Now, what do the lads from South Bend have to offer the hosts from Palo Alto, California?

--A severely wounded running attack.

--A not-mobile quarterback, who is prone to mistakes.

--Receivers who will be covered by 8-9 defenders.

--A defense that does not handle the passing game very well (talk to Matt Barkley).

--Kickers who always give position advantage to returners.

--A coach who has become very conservative in play-calling.
The Irish need to have an up-temporunning attack and a passing game that is without turnovers. If the defense can raise hell at Mr. Luck,ND will win this game.

E-Mail from Miss Irish/Indiana: Should Mike Floyd be a first team All-American?

The Irish Brogue: He certainly should get top consideration. He is a great "good-hands-man." who runs excellent routes and blocks very well. A real asset to any team, including an NFL one. We are of the mind that Tyler Eifert should be a very strong candidate for tight-end AA honors.

We close today with a comment about the BC game this weekend. Their offense is no match for the Irish defense and their defense, with the exception of Luke Kuechley, can't stand up to the Irish offense. Or, so it all seems. However, the lads from Chestnut Hill have shown some real sparks from time to time this season, and a victory over the hated South Benders would virtually erase all their losses. But, what the hell, that ain't going to happen. The Irish in a rout.

It was clear from the ND-USC game that Brian Kelly is no Lane Kiffin when it comes to offensive play-calling and Bob Diaco very definitely is no Monte Kiffin as a caller of defensive formations.

This annual contest, billed as a "rivalry", has become pretty much of a revolt by the Trojans.

Some Southern Cal players accused the no-so-fighting Irish as quitters as the game wound down; pretty damn embarrassing. However, they didn't quit---they just didn't show up to play bigtime college ball---and.once again, Kelly and his coaches had no Adjustments made on either side of the ball when needed. They should be ashamed for the debacle. This was a coaches loss!!

It was clear to all in the stands and watching the tube that ND's secondary played too deep---thus, USC ran the ball right down ND's throat or completed short ones time and again. Where the hell where the adjustments?

And, why couldn't the Irish run the ball? Hell, you could see that Jonas Gray was ready to do the needful.

Why could'nt a way be found (once again) to get the ball to Michael Floyd?

And, why is Tommy Rees the starting QB when he can't throw the long one and has tunnel vision for the short one? He looks one way, never scanning the field. And, he gets excellent pass blocking.

Is it unreasonable that Kelly should not be calling the plays and that Diaco should be moved aside? The defense was porous and shabby throughout. No adjustments.

This was a big game in prime time with the Irish a 9-point favorite (what a joke) and all they offered the roaring crowd was vanilla with a scent of road kill.

Nothing more to be said about that game. There was a shit storm in South Bend once again.

Notre Dame needs to win the next four games, which they are expected to do (please tell Navy and Wake Forest to do what messrs. Kelly, Diaco and Swarbrick so desire).

That would make them 8-3 going into the last game against an outstanding Stanford team with a lot of Luck.

Lots of luck, ND!

Now, on to USC. A win here will put ND in the top teams' roster and give them the momentum to finish in a BCS Bowl, and, who knows, a victory along the way over Stanford. Shut down Matt Barkley, Woods and Tyler and down go the Trojans. Their defense can't stop the Irish offense. Barkley's the Key!!

On the other hand, a loss to the Men of Troy could mean deflated egos and attitude, as well as losses to the Cardinal, a very good Wake Forest, and perhaps Navy. The Sun Bowl would them beckon.

Why the Las Vegas oddsmakers have given The Fighting Irish an 8.5 point spread challenges betting logic, but, what the hell, here's a Century Note to back it. Our preference is still to wager at thoroughbred race tracks---like Churchill Downs for the upcoming Breeder's Cup Classic: Go Uncle Mo!!

Notre Dame is pretty healthy going into the night game. And, with a relatively proven Andrew Hendrix as a sometime package passer/runner, the Irish should fare well on offense, heralded by Michael Floyd, Tyler Eifert, Cierre Wood and Jonas Gray along with improving Tommy Rees. Hopefully, the defense (especially the secondary) is up to pre-AFA standard, and the damn special teams start performing BCS caliber or at least above average.

This is the defining game for the Lads of South Bend.....and for coach Kelly, as well.

Notre Dame is going to have its hands (and feet) full of it this Saturday at South Bend, trying to snare Falcons on the ground and in the air. This should be the toughest test for the Fighting Irish to date.

As of this game, Bob Diaco and his defense have not shown all that well against option quarterbacks, especially those who can run and pass.....and have their wits about them!!

It will take an aggressive and highly disciplined defense in the trenches, at linebackers, and in the secondary to contain and beat the Falcons. Win there and the game is victory number 4, because the defense of the AFA is certainly nothing for the cadets to write home about---and the Irish offense has become praiseworthy, almost "letter-perfect" by backs---Cierre Wood and Jonas Gray.

When the Lads from Leprechaunville are efficient, they can play with anyone in the country.

E-Mail from Irish Miss/Indiana: Am I mistaken that the special teams of Notre Dame have been mediocre to inferior? I have been very depressed by their over-all showing to this point on the schedule/
The Irish Brogue: Mediocre is pretty close. With the exception of the touchdown run by George Atkinson, runbacks on kickoffs are below average and the blocking has been poor. John "fair-catch" Goodman has been somewhat of an embarrassment in "returning" (are you kidding?) punts. Speaking of punts, our little guy is not like his father or uncle in getting the ball down the field. His punts, for the most part, have been failed ones, if you will. Our other kicker, Kyle Brindza, has shown no consistentcy to get the ball in the end zone. It seems like he's aiming for the 15-yard line. Special teams will make the difference as the schedule enfolds, for better or for worse. No prediction from this corner.

It's going to be one helluva game this weekend---expect a high score (preferably by Notre Dame)

For the record, they are full of shit! (As it were).

It should be clear to all that Notre Dame's coming tests will probably be decided in the fourth quarter.....and that includes the one with the Purdue Boilermakers, who really should not be much of a challenge.

The Fighting Irish, for whatever reason, just don't build bigtime leads and go into the 4th quarter, indeed, the last minutes, with the notion that this game is in the bag. Adjustments, adjustments.

Yes, they are a very good 2-2 team. But, 2-2 nevertheless.

And, yes, there is something wrong with Tommy Rees and the way he handles his quarterbacking duties.
He has no speed, no elusiveness, doesn't scan the field before passing, and frankly, isn't very strong.
But, by God, he is 6-1 as a starter! Ya gotta go with him.

We do wish that Kelly would have found a way to get the ball to Michael Floyd against Pitt. He never made that adjustment. Don't know why. It raises the same question why Diaco was never able to adjust to and stop Denard Robinson from beating ND again. Don't know why. We have to worry about Air Force and Navy.

Adjusting to their adjustments.

The Irish defense, nonetheless, is bordering on superb, and the line play of Lynch and Tuitt is only going to get better. It is reallly tough to run against ND and the pass rush is getting better. Pass defense is still the proverbial "work in progress."

Adjustments, adjustments---so far lacking in some elements of the game on both sides of the ball.
Correct this omission and the Irish are on their way to a BCS bowl.

E-Mail of the Week, From Jim/Missouri:
"I believe that the Irish should be in a conference---and someday they may be forced into one. The right conference IMO is the Big 12, with the following teams: Bring back Texas A&M; Texas, Baylor, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, dear Missouri, BYU, and yes, Notre Dame. What a strong league in all sports, especially football. Step Aside SEC."

Purdue will be looking to knock off the Irish, a much better team, but the Boilermakers will turn some new pages from their offense and defense playbooks. They will be tenacious under the lights.

Adjust to their adjustments, coach Kelly.
Pitt On Prowl---No Growl

Observation: Notre Dame's defense against the heralded running game of Michigan State was outstanding; a sight to see. The Spartan's backs almost had a higher number of attempts than yards gained.

But, it was the rather poor showing by MSU's QB, Kirk Cousins, arguably one of the best passers in the country, who was hit, hurried, harassed time and again by ND's Aaron Lynch---the spectacular freshmen who is going to be a real nemesis to opposing signal callers. He was a difference-maker.

It was a Big Win. And, it was needed. This Fighting Irish team is still prone to turnovers and penalties, yet a very talented bunch of veterans and underclassmen, who, when efficient on both sides of the ball, can beat anyone. Are you listening Stanford?

Las Vegas oddsmakers sure-as-hell have a lot of confidence in ND, despite their record and opponent.
(That certainly helped our wallets).

E-Mail From Mike/New York: I remain unconvinced that Tommy Rees is the Man. He has more turnovers than the the rest of the team combined. He can't seem to leave the pocket. He throws interceptions. He fumbles. What's Dayne Crist' future?
The Irish Brogue: Actually, he did scamper (for his life) a few times against MSU. He'll become more mobile and more accurate---and watch his back. I hope Dayne sticks around until he gets that coveted
ND degree, then moves on next year to a good team that needs a quarterback. He is a good guy. Hopefully, he'll get a shot at the NFL.

Instant Analysis: Pittsburgh, pulling a fast one on the Big East with a forthcoming jump to the ACC, will also try to pull out all the stops against the Irish on Saturday at a ghastly noon kick-off. This should be a "yawner." NDs defense is on a tear and Pitt's erratic offense shouldn't be a match. If the offense can play four quarters without a plethora of turnovers (i.e., more than one), rack up victory number 2. It's good to hear that Robby Toma might get a shot at returning punts. The Panther's growing pains under a new coach are little to growl about...yet! Todd Graham (formerly of Tulsa) will make Pitt bigtime in future years.

E-Mail from Jack/Ohio: How come Davaris Daniels has not seen the field? Theo Riddick has yet to shine.
The Irish Brogue: If he is up to it physically, look for a pass or two his way against Pitt. You're right, Theo has not lived up to hype and potential so far.

20-Second Editorial: The Fighting Irish "front Office" and NBC-Tv were bombarded with angry calls from many viewers who were upset with Coach Brian Kelly's sideline rantings recently. To them we say, "get a life." He has every right to chew the butts of his free full-scholarship players when such ass ripping merits.

E-Mail From Casper/South Dakota: Notre Dame is a nervous team--shaky and without a killer's confidence--playing not to win but rather not to lose. Therefore 0-2; miscues notwithstanding. This is the major problem with the football program, and has been for years. When this attitude/strategy ends so too will the win/loss column.

E-Mail from Fred/Iowa: Tommy Rees seems to be stuck in the pocket, almost immobile, with eyes
(nearly) open only for Michael Floyd. How can you or the opponent miss them? I like the kid and wish him well, but he does the Irish no service with tunnel vision and an immovable body. He is no dual threat and I believe that is contrary to Brian Kelly's spread offense QB. Wherefore art thou, Golson?

E-Mail From Helen/Indiana: Swagger! Notre Dame comes up empty in this category. The one important element that could make a real difference to the rest of the season and beyond is a belief in oneself and the team as a whole that turns into an energy and attitude. When it's there, it can be seen and it can be felt by everyone including the opposing team in the form of a fear factor. Where is the Irish Swagger? It hasn't been seen in a long while. This team needs to reclaim their lost enthusiasm, their lost passion to win--their lost swagger and make it anew.

E-Mail from Robert/Maryland: We know that turnovers, penalties, and a defensive stand that didn't materialize when needed were the keys to two ND losses against teams they should have beaten. It has been a painful---and ugly--start. If the Fighting Irish can't turn the tables on ranked Michigan State, I see a 7-5 season once again. I do hope Kelly will give Golson a shot, Rees is too predictable and immobile; Also Tuitt and Lynch rushing MSU's gifted passer.

E-Mail from Angelo/California: I have been in need of some seriously good comedy. Thank you Notre Dame for providing no short supply of hysterical laughter; exactly what I needed. I will continue to tune in, ready for a fresh batch of continuous laughs. Hey, Fighting Irish, your script is right on cue. Do you guys rehearse this every-Saturday routine? If you all keep these "comedic sketches" up, a standing ovation is in order. I'll be watching.

INSTANT EDITORIAL: The Fighting Irish had Michigan State on the ropes last season, until Coach D'Antonio snookered them with a fake punt for a touchdown and the victory. There can be no turnovers, no penalties, no lapses by the defense against this veteran and well-mentored Spartan team. Correct these deficiencies and mount a pass rush that matters---and the lads from South Bend get their first win of the season. A big win!

--Gary Gray was awful. Why wasn't he pulled after the second touchdown he lost to a Wolverine receiver?

--The Irish pass rush was anemic in the second half. Once again ND launched Denard Robinson into the Heisman mix. Two years in a row. God Bless 'em (so says the Michigan QB).

--When it mattered, at least six times, Brian Kelly's play-calling for rushes played right into the hands of Michigan's defensive front. Cierre Wood always went right, and they were waiting for him. A loss!

--Greg Mattison ousted Bob Diaco for DC game ball. Mattison made adjustments in the second half; Diaco didn't. Very troubling. Also, let's get off the Manti Teo bandwagon. At this point he is nowhere near being an All-American.

--ND's receivers are coming around very effectively, and Tommy Rees is (slowly) shaping up, turnovers notwithstanding. I'm sure he is aware that his costly miscues along with GGray's convulsive coverage cost Notre Dame the game.

--The offensive line impressed....somewhat....sometimes. Defensive secondary: F grade. (Thirty seconds to go, ND's got the lead, UM has 80 yards. Messrs Gray et al watched them score rather easily).

--Regardless of where the Fighting Irish play---away or at home--Touchdown Jesus should be renamed
Turnover Jesus. Nine so far in two games. Way to go Irish!

--I guess some would argue that Notre Dame is the best 0-2 team in the nation.

--I am not one of them. The games are too painful to watch over-all. The Lads from South Bend are not closers and cannot hold a lead with gusto. You just can't trust them, with or without the ball. In effect, they are not a very good (or well-coached) team.

--Hello, Mr. Robinson. Goodnight and goodbye, Mr. Robinson. Please join the NFL.
Do you really believe this team can challenge for a BCS bowl after watching last Saturday's debacle?
The Irish Brogue: Fortunately, we didn't put our money where our mouth was jabbering. Look at the stats, ND was far superior to USF. The Irish shed their gameface for a shameface. Five turnovers and those ridiculous penalties. The Michigan/Michigan State games are pivotal for a BCS launch. 10..9..8.....

E-Mail From AJP/Chicago: What can the Irish do to end their consistently unlucky ways?
The Irish Brogue: Pray, pray, pray. Be that as it may,. it does appear that, despite who the coach is or what season it is, ND has been both inconsistent and unlucky (did you notice that BJDaniels fumbled and the ball mysteriously bounced into his hands?). We now know that the "Luck of the Irish" is generally bad if the USF game is any indicator. Work, work, work at holding onto the ball (JGray and Theo Riddick, e.g.) and stop, stop, stop those absolutely ludicrous penalties (are you hearing HSmith?). They have got to step up to their hype, experience, and talent.

E-Mail From Sammy/Salt Lake City: In light of NDs struggles, especially in South Bend, is it just me or are the Fighting Irish at a disadvantage playing at home?
The Irish Brogue: Yes. Look at the stats. Over recent years the Irish have a losing record at home. I can't imagine what Rockne, Leahy, and Ara are thinking. It is painful and embarrassing. But they don't deserve those boos from the student section when the going gets tough. Thank God for a more sympathetic Subway Alumni!

E-Mail From Donald/Orlando: I think ND needs a new look. Keep the helmets of course, but change the uniforms. What do you think?
The Irish Brogue: I agree. Most apologists for the current uniforms play the "tradition" card. Bullshit.
Hell yes, green jerseys with names on the back for openers. Whatever after that. I am no fashion plate like the Under Armour guy who does the Maryland uniforms!!

E-Mail from Augustus/Phoenix: I don't see the "helpless hands" Notre Dame beating Michigan at Ann Arbor under the lights before 100,000 howling Wolverines. Show me that I'm wrong.
The Irish Brogue: Hey, Augustus, we're the same folks who had ND by 17 over USF. I do believe this:
If the Irish contain Denard Robinson, the lads will win going away.

Would this torturous game ever end? It finally did, hours later, and the only smiling faces were those of the University of South Florida players, fans and coach Skip Holtz......and his father.

(Geezus, was that the smiling face of CharlieWeis in my morning burnt toast?).

We all know the final score, which in effect was signaled early by the meat-hook hands of Jonas Gray, who coughed up the ball, two yards from a touchdown and into the hands of a Bull defensive player, who scored a TD at the other endzone.

No recovery or revenge from the lads of South Bend. Only more chaos...and, admittedly bad luck.

Once again, ND proved that they cannot beat a team they should beat. And, they should have whipped USF handily. Comeon, let's face it. The Bulls are a Good team, not a Very good team, certainly not a Great team. Looks at the stats: 3 yards a carry rushing; 7 yards for every pass thrown by BJ Daniels.
They only scored one offensive touchdown, and their total yards of 254 dismally compared with ND's 508 total. I would not put money on USF to win the Big East title.

What the hell is going on with Notre Dame?

Actually we know. They just don't live up to their billing or hype.

Guys who were expected to perform well, performed poorly over-all: messrs. Crist, Riddick, TJJones, Turk, G/JGray, Ruffer, for example. The Irish mounted one good pass rush against a very average line and QB; Manti Teo and his LB corps were out to lunch/dinner on short pass coverage most of the afternoon and evening; and, Harrison Smith was back to making bone-headed penalties that cost the Irish.

Thank you Michael Floyd, Cierre Wood (when you weren't tired), Tyler Eifert...and, by God, Tommy Rees. You guys came to play. And, damn it, over-all NDs defense did okay, but didn't garner many losses and only one bonafide turnover. Bennett Jackson was the star of the Special Teams defense.

It was troubling to watch Theo Riddick mishandle and nearly mishandle evey punt that came his way.
This young man rides the fear train back there. Better to have John "Faircatch" Goodman at the helm
(or, what about Toma).

I really feel sorry for Dayne Crist, who, when the chips are down, just doesn't step up.  You could see by his expression with the Irish trailing.  He, too, was aboard the fear train.  Same look last year. God love him;
perhaps a transfer for one more year to a Division 1-A school would help launch him into an NFL tryout.

I don't know if the Irish will come out of this disaster (I'm not even sure if the Pope is Catholic anymore)
with a new determination and "focus." They'll certainly need their best game---if they have one--to beat the Wolverines of the University of Michigan, a much better team than USF. Make no mistake.

No more wishful thinking or score predictions from this corner in favor of the Fighting Irish.

I would rather take my chances with the Breeder's Cup Classic. The odds are better.
They've had five of these tests on the road and have won four. Whipping some damn good teams.

They won't be scared by the fervor of the multitude of Notre Dame fans in the stands this Saturday. This is an excellent team, squad, coaching staff and a coach who has been there before....many times, watching his old man take the Fighting Irish to new heights in college polls and a national championship to boot.

That was then, and this is now for Skip Holtz, and he faces an uphill battle against a seasoned and talented
team on both sides of the ball. His team has been picked by many analyst to win the Big East Conference; a few believe USF can beat ND.

Forget it!

The Fighting Irish have not been the same since Lou Holtz was the mentor. But that has changed.....finally.
Brian Kelly has a team that has all the strengths (except at punt returning, which is a big question) needed to compete for a BCS bowl and, indeed, the national championship.

They have an outstanding coach and staff, in sync and with teaching skills that have been lacking during the previous umpteen years. The players, many are multi-talented Freshmen, know their positions well, the nuances, and the attitude to excell and even get better---not fading in the stretch and losing to teams they should have beaten.

These lads will come to play to the end, every game---never bowing down or out.

Please be assured.

Cheer, cheer for ol Notre Dame.

You won't be disappointed.

E-Mail from Jack/Massachusetts: I believe Manti Teo and Michael Floyd will be strong first team All-American candidates. What say you?
Irish Brogue: Agreed. Don't count out Zach Martin and Harrison Smith. Braxton Cave also shows well on the AA tote board.
There have been a handful to date, with some very serious--Cam Roberson--to pings with pain for the likes of Mike Ragone (so what else is new). And, Mike Golic's broken arm a few days ago. Coach Brian Kelly doesn't play the "don't bang each other so hard" game that ended up backfiring on Charlie Weis. Thank you, BK. But, we all know the positions that are critical to the Irish winning a Leprechaun's share of games without the sound of "snap, crackle, and pop" bringing down (and out) an ND blue chip starter, especially in the offensive backfield. Keep your eye on the ball, faithful, but if you hear that sound, close your eyes and pray that you know what!

E-MAILS:

(From John, Delaware): You guys have thumped the tub of Dayne Crist since he signed on as a Freshman. He hasn't shown that well, IMO, and was bested by Tommy Rees last season as NDs stretch run will show. Why should he start over TR?

(The Irish Brogue): He has the better arm, especially for long-distance tosses to Michael Floyd. A real sleeper could be Terry's son---Conor Hanratty.

INSTANT EDITORIAL: There's a another big scandal, the biggest ever actually, of hurricane force descending on the University of Miami campus--specifically its football field and basketball court. This wicked wind has a real bad odor and the smell permeates Coral Gables. It is just too damn bad that Al Golden, the brand new football coach and Tom Larranaga, the equally new basketball coach have to work through the stink. The U deserves to be punished big time; messrs. Golden and Larranaga, both of high character and integrity, deserve better.

ANALYSIS APROPOS---USF GAME: A very strong Notre Dame veteran defense goes against a questionable University of South Florida offense. A better-than-average USF defense goes against an ND offense that has a top veteran offensive line, questions at QB and RB, and no problems at WR. Put all these factors together: The Fighting Irish by 17.

---ScottB

An observer at the Irish camp opener was heard to say, "thank God for Robby Toma. At least there's one guy I can relate to in size."

Actually, there are others, but not many.

There was a crowd of linemen--Louis Nix, Stephon Tuitt, Zach Martin, Tate Nichols among them. I swear that a Kodiak bear could have been lost in the shuffle. Standing tall and wide, indeed!

Look, the guys on both sides of the immediate line are not only big ("huge" is a better word), they have the strength to go along with it, and speed we haven't seen for a long time for offensive and defensive lineman. Don't shortchange their smarts either.

Barring injuries, we all know who they are: Dever and Martin, Robinson and probably Nuss, and Cave. The back-ups are sterling, led by Lombard and Watt. And, by God, Mike Golic is looking good at center.

He probably won't play, like ever, but the Florida ladder, Bruce Heggie, is now an O-lineman. Good luck to a nice kid. Unfortunately, it looks like he'll letter four years as a Scout teamster.....unless!

KLM, Johnson will be bookends to Nix, who is rounding into shape and athleticism at 330 pounds. Also known as "Irish Chocolate," large Louie should be a premier nose tackle for years to come.(Let's not forget Freshmen Lynch and Tuitt. They have the size and skill to do the needful, as well).

I don't think it's tilting at windmills, but the O and D lines will play significant and consistent roles, respectively, in making the rushing and passing game a helluva lot better than in the past several years and making it very difficult for opponents to run and pass effectively.

Dayne Crist and Cierre Wood, Manti Teo and Harrison Smith---your jobs have become easier with the bulk, brawn and brains up front.

It's hard to believe, but Leon Hart, George Connor, Ziggy Czarobski, would look like boys among men, matching their size and date of play against Martin, Nix et al of this year's Fighting Irish.

Let's see if they can match them in poll rankings.

It also can be said that Notre Dame faithful should never look back in anger, but keep a positive eye on the football season ahead.

It has been many, many years---but, by God, tiz true, tiz true, tiz true for the 2011 schedule.

Hell with the guarded optimism. The time is now. Listen, you can hear the echoes. Tradition is off hold and back as a staple.

Stop worrying about the 2012 recruiting class. It will be a good one. Has there ever been a better bunch of rookies than those who will be in uniform this year?

Stop worrying about who is going to call signals for the Fighting Irish. It will be Dayne Crist and he will do just fine, thank you.

All the pieces are in place (except a good punt returner) on both sides of the line. We all know who the stellars are supposed to be---there's a lot of 'em---led by Michael Floyd on offense and Manti Teo on Defense. And, there will be some breakout players, such as freshman Davaris Daniels and reverse-role guys: Bennett Jackson and Austin Collingsworth. Watch Christian Lombard when he's in there; a future All-American.

We've had seven months of speculation, repetition, damnation (recalling Charlie Weis), and now: expectation

Let's get on with our lives, which is to say, The September Song.

Notre Dame's first game against the University of South Florida may be its toughest test.

The Bulls come off strong wins against Miami and Clemson, both on the road, and have one of the country's top QBs in BJ Daniels, numero kicker in Maikon Bonani, all-everything candidate senior cornerback Quentin Washington and offensive guard Jeremiah Warren.

Please don't forget the massive lineman Danous Estenor, who just this summer, lifted a Cadillac Esplanade off a pinned guy in Florida. "Excuse me, sir, I thought you were a water buffalo!"

Most analysts believe that the USF Bulls will compete with West Virginia for the Big East title. They are going to be tough under Skip Holtz.

Not to worry.

The Irish will be favored and unlike past years, ND will win the games they are supposed to win and possibly every contest on the schedule. They are that good and their coaching staff is even better.

Look, fall camp is ready to begin. Injuries will dictate changes in the depth chart that is forged in our memories from Brian Kelly's earlier prognostications, and those put forth in Lindys, Athlon, and Sporting News.

It's Johnny Lujack and Company time once again. Spell tradition with a capital T.

                                                              xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

----ScottB Views: 548
THE IRISH BROGUE

The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, underdogs by less than a touchdown, view the Hurricanes as a tough foe to defend, as well as pass against---and, for good reason, Miami does both very well. But, as the past three games show, so does UND. This should be a test of wills and turnovers, and hopefully a nice kick or two by David Ruffer to help put the W with the lads from South Bend.

Coach Brian Kelly's minions welcome the contest as another opening and another close---something the Irish have been doing very well of late.

It's all about the "lead" as far as the Irish are concerned: Gain it, grab it, hold it, close it, win it. Not a bad mantra, and one that ND has been adhering to in the last stages of the schedule with the hope it continues in the Sun Bowl.

Young Mr. Tommy Rees will have to be at his best against Miami's elite pass defenders: no tracking a single receiver with fixed eyes, and also showing some adept body movement like spread QBs should have. "Show us you can run, Tommy-boy." He'll have targets--Floyd, Riddick and Eifert in their best condition, along with Jones and Toma--not to mention frosh Dan Smith for the first time. These are all good hands men!

Give that damn ball to Robert Hughes and let him run for daylight---here, there, and everywhere. He told us he wants to finish his career reminiscent of the ND "big load," Jerome Bettis. Of course, Cierre Wood has to step up from the git-go.

Passing, catching, and running with effectiveness will overwhelm an otherwise solid Miami---but, occasionally shaky---defense.

Ian Williams is back in the fold and ready to display his grunt-and-push prowess for the last time, especially for NFL scouts.

Over-all the Irish defense has come on strong and there is no reason to believe that Te'o, BSmith, HSmith, Gray, and those other secondary anchors won't be struttin' their stuff and keeping their eyes open for some errant passes from an erratic and undisciplined Hurricane QB.

This is a Notre Dame team that is showing upward and onward movement for the 2011 campaign that lies ahead--God, look who's coming back, coming in--and a win in the Sun Bowl is the moment and the momentum to stir the echoes of past glory for future big-time BCS success.

Gain it, grab it, hold it, close it, win it.

Notre Dame: 30
         Miami: 17

Harriet Ward Beecher wrote that "it is defeat that turns bone to flint; it is defeat that turns gristle to muscle; it is defeat that makes men invincible."

And, apparently that was Notre Dame football going into the Utah game and it would seem that the coaches and players decided that the Beecher diddy was bull dump. Winning is much better. And so they did. The Irish also showed pride, passion, and purpose--long-missing from their portfolio.

Now to the business at hand. Talk about legends and legacies..

New York City.

Yankee Stadium.

The Black Knights of the Hudson

The Green-Clad Fighting Irish.

The Birth of the Subway Alumni.

There may be no Lujacks, Connors, Harts, Davis', Blanchards, and Galiffas---certainly no Rockne's and "win one for the Gipper" from earlier tests on the original playing field.

But, a lot is on the line as Notre Dame and Army renew the Big Apple rivalry. The cadets look to a solid bowl with close-out victories over the Irish and Navy, giving them an 8-4 record. It's been a long time since the West Pointers have enjoyed eight wins. As for the Irish, a win puts them in a bowl game (and a final victory over USC gives them a "respectable" 7-5 slate).

Can they defend with discipline and drive the triple option, which heretofore has been a mystery unsolved by the Irish. Bob Diaco's reputation---and perhaps job is on the line. Can Schwenke and Shembo--ND's most aggressive and dynamic defenders---learn how to handle the Army offense on short notice? On the other side of the ball, can frosh QB Rees light up the nighttime sky with an aerial display? Can Kelly out-coach a very good Cadet mentor?

We think that Yes answers those and other pertinent questions.

Notre Dame: 31
           Army: 10
The Utes having been eaten alive by the Horned Frogs of Texas Christian University last week and the Fighting Irish desperately trying to become bowl eligible and showing little reason why they should be.

Utah has shown a lot of pride over the past few years under one of the best coaches nobody has ever hear of: Kyle Whittingham (although, Urban Meyer certainly remembers him). Some folks think that the Utes' weaknesses were exposed by TCU, but don't count on it, especially if you are rooting for ND, whose myriad weaknesses on both sides of the ball have been exposed by teams not in the same league with the boys from Fort Worth.

At the moment, Notre Dame's player-performance has shown little pride...or passion, and am not sure about purpose, either.

Yet, this could all change this weekend with an aggressive showing and victory against a ranked team, also putting the Irish on a strong route to a bowl game in "who cares where" and the 15 practices it represents, not to mention what could end up being a winning season.

The Notre Dame-Utah game, when you start throwing numbers around, can be the turning point, the turn-around, a true test of pride. Do the Fighting Irish have what it takes? Let's find out.

Tune in Saturday.

--ScottB
THE IRISH BROGUE

Brian Kelly allows as how Notre Dame must win two out of the next three games to be bowl-eligible at
6-6. Yes, coach, we know that.

But which two teams will the Irish beat: Utah and Army, Utah and USC, Army and USC?

We believe that foolish, flopped pass Kelly called for a coffin corner TD, said bye-bye to a bowl game and probably a winning season or a six-draw. I mean Tulsa, for crissakes, they lost to Tulsa.

There is no reason to believe, based on what we have seen on the gridiron so far, that ND can beat Utah or USC and let's face it, if Duke can whip Navy, then Army can throttle the Irish. We may be lookin' at 4-8.

And, that realistic prospect breaks our hearts, just like Kelly and his lads from South Bend have been doing most of this season, especially in the clutch when the game is on the line.

Watching ND's ground game is more or less boring than observing your daughter playing 'Chutes and Ladders' (when is mom coming home?). Wherefore Art Thou, Johnny Lattner?

It was sad to see Crist go down, but honestly, did the Irish have a big void because of it? Methinks not. Rees is probably a better spread QB and he performed rather admirably coming in cold turkey.

No, it matters not that the freshman is at the helm or injuries abound. It's something else. A team that is waiting to be defined as a winner when it's as a loser they are more definable. What the hell has happened to Notre Dame tradition, Irish pride?

Adrian Cuff, up in the stands and surrounded by several Irish faithful, said that in the closing seconds as ND moved the ball to the 20 yard line, there wasn't one fan who thought they could pull the game out, despite the momentum and a very good field goal kicker in the wings. That, my friends, is the lack of confidence there is in this team and this coach. Pretty damn sad. Notre Dame stadium has become HeartBreak City.

If you want to refocus your attention during this coming bye week, watch the Breeder's Cup Classic.
There you will see a true champion, a real competitor, a clutch closer: Zenyatta.

Coach Brian Kelly owes the Notre Dame faithful an apology for one of the worst showings by an Irish football team in this century. Hell, this wasn't a battle on the high seas with anchors away. This was New Jersey, for crissakes, and the Midshipmen flushed ND down a toilet bowl that was temporarily called the Meadowlands.

We warned the ND Nation that "The Mids Will Get ND If They Don't Watch Out."

We did, admittedly, soften that concern late in the week when Kelly let it be known far and wide that his Lads from South Bend have been working on stopping Navy's triple option for several weeks. Not to worry.

They were, he boasted, prepared for the creative, disciplined offense of the U.S. Naval Academy alright---they just weren't prepared to stop it. And, especially no back-up plan to halt the Middies back-up fullback, who ran amok all afternoon.

Let's face it: The Fighting Irish were exposed in the Meadowlands, in front of 80,000 spectators, most of whom were Notre Dames fans, the subway alumni of New Jersey and New York.

What an embarrassment! Navy with it's one goat, ND's football team with several.

We couldn't wait to get as far away from the stink left by the Notre Dame defense and the pathetic performance of Dayne Crist, who just may not be the right QB for the spread offense. And, as for the Kelly spread, make mine mustard. At least there's a bite to it.

The whole ugly experience was best summed up, but not short, by Jersey City native, Brendan M, a subway alum who has followed Notre Dame football for 60 years:

"First I want to point out that I had been looking forward to this game for a long time. I had my whole game plan mapped out months in advance. I knew I would get up early and put on my ND cap and my ND shirt. I would immediately go straight to Dunkin' Donuts and get my Pumpkin Coffee and then thereafter, along the way to my subway stop, I knew I would have one hell of a big smile on my face. Why? I am Notre Dame dammit! This was my time to show up and wake up the echoes. My time to show my allegiance. I already knew how I would walk into the new Meadowlands stadium with that slow cock walk, slight grin on my face as I make my way to my seat. I have come to conquer! I have made it this far and there is no way anything will stop me now! I would look out onto the field knowing that I am of one with all of my ND brethren and all of the ND faithful. I would stare out into the blue sky knowing that what makes a Notre Dame fan different than any other is.....PASSION. A very special kind of passion.

"I discovered yesterday, as I stood in my seat after the game was over, that ND players and coaches are supposed to be fans too, not just players and coaches. I discovered that that is exactly what is missing and what has been missing for a very long time. It's as if my Notre Dame men just show up, strap on the gear and they have done their job. Where has the passion gone?! 60 years ago this was not the case, men went to Notre Dame because they had the passion to be there. They didn't need to make a top 5 visit list. They didn't need to visit Notre Dame, they just knew it was the tiny little Catholic school where they would be, because they wanted to be there, they had the passion to be there.

"Passion, passion, passion. Where has it gone? Yesterday, the Irish had none except from all the Irish fans like me. My hat is off to Navy. They had their passion and they were fun to watch. Their passion showed not just in score but in their play after play after play. Notre Dame passion.....How can a tiny little Catholic school be the most popular college football team and have the biggest fan base (except maybe for Zenyatta) in what may be all of sports? It's called passion, it's called passion. When that tiny little Catholic school gets back to finding theirs, when the players and coaches become the fan, not just a player, not just a coach, then it will show in score and play after play after play. And it will be fun, so very fun to watch.

"At least after the game was over, I could still take my cock walk over to the Meadowlands race track. With the races set to begin soon there, it was the 7th race at Belmont Park I had been thinking about for several weeks called the Sleepy Hollow and a certain horse named Bandbox. I knew that Bandbox would win, this horse is special, he has passion. A certain kind of passion. So, via simulcast and with PASSION, I put all I had on Bandbox to win and I keyed Bandbox in exactas, trifectas, and superfectas. Passion can take you to the winners circle as it did for me and Bandbox yesterday."

We don't know about the rest of you Notre Dame diehards, but we learned once again that over-all the Irish made a poor showing, with the exception of Michael Floyd, against a team that came in lacking in all aspects of the game. And, to think there were Orange Bowl officials in the stands. Apparently, their plane had to land in Indiana for a layover and there was no Indy500.

The Irish also were consistent in making another "no-name" QB into a "big-game" Slinger at least in the first half. Thanks to a poor pass rush, once again, and poor coverage by the secondary, once again, the Broncos were, in effect, unloading on ND's anticipated game-ending victory parade thru the tunnel.. The half-time headline could have read: "Shit Storm Brewing in South Bend---Broncos Crapping on Irish Defense."

Somehow, Coach Brian Kelly ripped into his players at half-time, cut out their yellow bellies and pissed in the holes, otherwise he got the defense ready to play in the second half with some "steam"...and they did. The players went to the locker room sporting a 4-3 winning record.

Come Satuday at High Noon, the Fighting Irish will try to figure out the triple option of the Midshipmen of the Naval Academy, something they haven't done very well over the past four games, although winning a couple. Coach Unpronounceable will have the Middies ready to kick leprechaun ass, you can bet on that. This is a tough team and effective in the rock and roll offense. It will be interesting to see if the Irish are wide awake at 12pm EST.

Other than the obvious that Notre Dame must contain the triple offense with a full-alert, bend-but-don't-break defense, Dayne Crist must sink the Navy with long bombs to Floyd (if he plays), early and often, and pinpointers to Eifert and Kamara (not below them or behind them).Pass up and at Jones, long and short. The Irish will not need a high-octane rushing attack to beat the Mids. Cierre Wood can keep them honest.

There is no need to worry about the Navy's somewhat secret weapon, the Forward Pass. ND will have next week to worry about that scheme when they face the almost one-dimensional offense of Tulsa University---pass on nearly every down. It doesn't matter if it is complete, incomplete, or intercepted.

If Notre Dame comes to play effectively for two full halves, Navy should go down by four touchdowns.
We shall see, what we shall see, and what we really learned from the WMU game.

And, of course, thank God for David Ruffer, who continues his record streak of field goals. Talk about performing like a champion!

(By the way, when will we see "full go" second half offensive output compared to the current "slow go" showing?). The scoreboard was made to have points put upon it, Coach Kelly.

The Fighting Irish should win the next three games, Western Michigan, Navy, and Tulsa, although don't expect to see wide victory margins. Notre Dame started a "tradition" a few years ago by winning (and losing) very close games, and that probably won't change much, if at all! And, the WMU Broncos have a pretty decent aerial attack that will challenge the Irish tepid pass rush and erratic defensive backfield. The loss of Kyle Rudolph for the rest of the season will hurt.

We asked our large cadre of e-mailers (not commenters) to grade Notre Dame at mid-season. Here's how it fleshed out as an over-all grade, with some collective opinions and/or notes:

Passing: C+ Crist improving, but still too many costly passing decisions.
Rushing: C Allen not yet consistent, and Wood still can't break 'em.
OffLine: C+ Better than last year's edition, improving. Martin is a real comer.
Receiving: C+ Riddick is terrific, Floyd and Jones need to get open more. Where is Kamara?

Offense Over-all: C+

Pass Defense: C- Front Three were given near failing grades, as were Neal and Slaughter.
Run Defense: C+ Ian Williams got a few "pats," as did Calabrese and Shembo.
Secondary : C Gray and Blanton stood out, Walls, up and down. Smith, mostly up.
Def Line: : C- Williams had his moments. EJohnson, a loafer and soft.
Linebackers : C+ Manti Te'o not yet living up to hype. Calabrese & Shembo, thumbs-up.

Defense Over-all: C

Punts: C- Turk seems to be finally coming around.

Field-Goals: A+ When does Ruffer get a scholarship?

Returns: D Goodman, good hands, no moves or speed; Jackson, wait and see.

Over-all Team Grade: C

Coach Kelly still believes The Fighting Irish are a "work in progress" and that may be true at this half-point in the schedule. With six games remaining, the Irish passing attack and defense against the pass must shed the 'new boys on the block' image and show they can compete with anyone in the air and in the trenches. That's when we all will know that Kelly-style progress works.

--ScottB
THE IRISH BROGUE

After Kelly was shown multiple times dressing down his players during the Boston College game, individually and collectively, you can bet the camera and the booth conversation will be on the Irish coach and his demeaner after a failed play. It was a joy, in our opinion, to see BK going ballistic, almost near cardiac arrest. There was no polite, calm chat like, "Hi, Mr. Ruffer, could you in the future kick the ball so our opponent can gather it in on the playing field. He looks pained because you opted to sail it wide left to the water boy standing out of bounds."

And, keep your eye on Wannstedt, whose going to get the same treatment from an equal opportunity camera, hoping he can one-up Kelly's homicidal tendencies with some major blasts to his players' ears. Stay Tuned. There will be two contests in South Bend saturday. There are no manners in mentoring!
The other, featuring two teams still struggling to be taken seriously as good football squads. Notre Dame showed signs of improvement, but not enough to place big bucks in favor of the Irish. If Dayne Crist really wants to get on Brian Kelly's good side and not the butt of his outrage on the sidelines, the young signal-caller will be in sync with his receivers. He's had five games to make the adjustments. It's time.

Also, The pass defense, especially at the line of scrimmage, needs to shut down an opponent's aerial game, once and for all. Prince Shembo looks to be a great grunt needed to rush the passer, something Ethan Johnson and Kapron Lewis-Moore seem shy at doing. There is absolutely no punch to Ethan.

Pitt, which was supposed to have perched in the Top 25 and run away with the Big East Title, has been sluggish over-all, although showing signs of a volatile running game---something the Irish have proved they can stop effectively. Frank Cigarette (or something like that) is the Panther offensive coordinator, who loves to have his charges in a full-battle-mode for rushing yards. We don't blame him, since the passing game is so-so, that is to say: so, so mediocre. If the Irish can't contain QB Tiny Sunset (or whatever his names are), then not only will they have blown running the table set for five (games), ND has some real problems the rest of the way, especially with two of the last three--and one of those is not Army!

The Pitt game is the season "Definer."

Watch the camera pan to Kelly. He sure as hell is not running a Confessional on the sidelines, so don't expect to hear absolutions when he is face-to-face with a player. It's more like judgement at an Inquisition, "shut up and say one-hundred Our Father's, fifty Hail Mary's, and get your ass out of my sight."

Now that's a coach who wants to win.
