Part 2 of the visit Publisher Wade Ramsey and I paid to the Confederate Motor Company HQ in Birmingham AL, not long ago. Confederate President Matt Chambers was super gracious and gave us a tour of the facility and of the machines in the shop.

Visit to Confederate Motor Company HQ

Publisher Wade Ramsey and I paid a visit to the Confederate Motor Company HQ in Birmingham AL, not long ago. Confederate President Matt Chambers was super gracious and gave us a tour of the facility and of the machines in the shop. The visit was a good time, an eye opening experience and very informative insofar as Matt sharing his philosophy behind his innovative design and use of materials.

For a gear head who has watched Confederate from a distance, always considering them “unobtanium”, it was refreshing to learn that these machines deliver quite the value. I am not sure if I’d just jump on one of these machines and head cross country, but for what they are – they are tops. Made in America is also a points earner, and so we say check out Confederate Motor Company.

I will be posting select images of the machines and the shop over the next few days.

I hope you enjoy this peek behind the scenes at Confederate.

Since next Wednesday is Veteran’s Day I thought do something different for YOU BE THE JUDGE! I am giving you a look at a couple iconic bikes from WWII. The first is Larry Davidson’s ‘45 45 WLA. Tens of thousands of these were used by GIs in all theaters of the war. The second is an Indian Scout owned by a beautiful elderly lady near Clarion, Pennsylvania. Both of these bikes are part of the military motorcycling heritage. Thanks to the Vets who rode them and the people who have restored them.

For all you lovers of the classic Brit bikes here’s some news for you. The Norton marque has been resurrected by Stuart Garner at his Donington Park facility near Birmingham, England. But they are not your fathers’ old “Snortin” Nortons. These new Commando 961 SEs have been built from the ground up. The first 200 2010 Commando 961 SE models will have carbon fiber wheels with Brembro brakes and Ohlin suspension.

Of those first 200 bikes only 50 are being imported into the US by South Bay Norton in Lomita, California, the exclusive US Norton dealership. All of the 150 British bikes are spoken for. To get an up close look at the new Nortons you can see them at the International Motorcycle Show in Long Beach on December 4-6. Or you can look at www.nortonmotorcycle.com .

The Buffalo Chip On Car Crazy

The legendary Buffalo Chip in Sturgis will be featured at 11 PM November 9th on the Monday edition of Car Crazy. Car Crazy is a motorsports themed show hosted by Barry Mequiar of Mequiar Products. The show visited the Chip during the Sturgis Rally. Mequiar, who is passionate about cars, interviewed Buffalo Chip owner Rod Woodruff and found out about the passion motorcyclists have about their machines.

R.I.P. “Bo” Bodine

I was talking to Bill Bomberger yesterday after I dropped my bike off at New Castle Harley-Davidson. After our state of the industry talk he mentioned that he was bummed out because of the sudden passing last week of “Bo” Bodine. I was shocked because I hadn’t heard the news.

“Bo” was the first racer on the New Castles Race Team (which IronWorks partially sponsored) to reach the podium. He raced for Bill on 883s and Buells in AMA and NASB sanctioned races. He was a charismatic fun loving guy that both the fans and his fellow competitors liked being around plus he was well respected as a tough racer on the track. Brian “Bo” Bodine was 39 years old when he passed away. We’ll miss ya “Bo”.
