July Question: Backup Bike?

As most of you know I’ve been without my bike for over a year now as we are doing a makeover on it. In the past I had my 1988 FLHTC as a “back-up” bike. When something would happen to the bike that I was riding I’d pull out the trusty old back-up, change oil, put air in the tires, charge the battery and away I’d go. But after selling my 1996 FLHTCUI and wrecking my 2006 FLHTC, the old ‘88 became my primary bike, again. Now after the renovation is complete I plan on getting another back-up bike. I don’t plan on getting caught bikeless again!

As you can see I’ve had 3 full dressed baggers as my rides. Now I’m thinking that I might start looking for either an older used Road King or Heritage Softail. I got loaned one of each to ride last year and both were decent riders and a little sportier than my full dresser. My favorites a new Street Glide and Cross Bones are out of my price range.

My question to you is; Do you have a “Back-up Bike”? If you don’t and you had the where-with-all to buy one would you buy the exact same model that you already have, something similiar or something totally different? Inquiring minds want to know.

Laconia Bike Week Reports

A couple of friends of IronWorks, Richard Coon and Thomas Taylor out of Birmingham, Alabama just got back from spending a week at the Laconia Bike Week festivities up in New Hampshire. They shared some pictures they took and reported that they had a grand time even though the weather didn’t co-operate until near the end of the week. Hey, what’s Laconia without a little (?) rain? Every time I’ve gone it’s rained.

Even with the occasional inclement weather Laconia is one of the best places to have a rally. If you can pull yourself away from the happenings at Weirs Beach you get to see some great scenery. You ride around one mountain and there’s a quaint village nestled alongside a beautiful lake, around the next mountain another beautiful lake and this repeats itself all day long.

When you stop for some grub the people are so friendly. Plus for breakfast you get real maple syrup with your pancakes and a blind dog could find a place with great chowder for lunch. Laconia is one of my favorite places to ride and visit. We will post some of the pics Richard and Thomas shared with us later on. Thanks guys!

Motorcycle Safety Recall

The NHTSA reports that Royal Enfield is recalling nearly 200 of it’s 2009 motorcycles. Those bikes are equiped with the EFI unit construction engine. The recall is due to a lubrication problem that could cause the third gear to gall on the clutch shaft. This could cause the gear to seize on the shaft which could potentially make the rear wheel lock up. To fix the problem, a new replacement gear and clutch shaft will be installed, free of charge. Pittsburgh Motorcycle Cops Celebrate

On Friday, June 26th a bunch of current and former Motorcycle Patrolmen from the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police gathered for a special celebration. This marks the 100th year of the Pittsburgh Motorcycle Unit. The unit was formed in 1909 with the purchase of 5 Harley-Davidson motorcycles. They showed what they could do that first year by patrolling the streets during a street car strike and the 1909 World Series. They also may have given William Howard Taft the first Presidential motorcycle escort that year.

Currently there are over two dozen members of the Motorcycle Unit including one member who is the third generation of his family to ride in it. The current Pittsburgh Chief-of-Police is a former member of the unit. Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Police Motorcycle Unit for serving and protecting the city on their Harleys for 100 years. Pittsburgh has used Harley-Davidson Police Motorcycles for every one of those 100 years which may be a record.
