The Season Has Finally Begun ...

The 2010/11 campaign for Manchester United officially began a few days ago with the first preseason match vs Glasgow Celtic that took place in Toronto's Rogers Centre. It was the first leg of their North American Tour following their arrival in Chicago for training and the official launch of the new 2010/11 Home Kit.
The match results were typical for preseason as the regulars were given some time to regain their fitness levels and many of the youngsters were also given run-outs to try and prove that they are ready. It was an entertaining match, as exciting as a preseason match can be, with United coming out victors 3-1 (Berbatov, Welbeck, Cleverly) and there some impressive showings by a few players, such as newly acquired Chris Smalling who despite giving up the penalty showed a lot of promise. I could go on about the match however I lack the needed analytical skills sufficient to satisfy myself and those football supporters who may read this. Will leave the breakdown to others with more knowledge and expertise.

Would really like to focus the rest of my post on the new home kit and the mixed reviews I've heard and read about it. Here's a video (see above) that tries to capture the spirit that the players need for preseason and during the long season where we'll attempt to regain what's ours from Chelsea, the Barclay's Premier League Trophy. I like the new look, especially the retro look with the collar. This season begins the first year with a new sponsor Aon (as anything related to AIG just brings a negative image to the club). Granted Aon is another American sponsor that the hated American owners, the Glazers, negotiated with however if I remember correctly the last time we changed shirt sponsors the following season we regained the league trophy back from Chelsea. Can history repeat itself? United always likes to set a new precedent and remake history, so it won't surprise if it's repeated in 2010/11.

There are many supporters that refuse to buy any merchandise as they feel the money will line the pockets of our greedy owners instead of being directly used to enhance the club. According to BBC report: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/1005794.stm the club receive a set fee from Nike each year regardless of total shirt sales. So, with this one argument will not purchasing the new kit influence the Glazers' departure, probably not. Now as many will say and as Tim Ashmore concludes in his blog http://unitedkits.blogspot.com/ that "boycotting shirts will have any effect at all other than to save the would-be customer £40 or so. Ultimately, do what you think is best for your club and for yourself." On that note is where I stand, everyone will make their own decision but ultimately we all want Manchester United Football Club to succeed on the pitch bringing home as much silverware as possible furthering our already legendary status as the Greatest Football Club in the World.

While I agree with almost all of the arguments and can understand/accept their opinions of boycotting the new kit, I personally hope to purchase one myself as I really fancy the new look. Currently in my possession are three kits, the every-unpopular 2005/06 blue away, the 2007/08 black away, and the "Inspired by Greatness" 2008/09 blue third kit. It's been awhile since my last purchase and I'd love to have another one to wear on match days besides the oversized 08/09 kit I've worn the last two seasons.

2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ Semi-finals

So it has come down to the final three in the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™. Today was the first match pitting the last remaining South American hope for a Finals berth, in Uruguay, after heavyweights Brazil and Argentina dramatically crashed out in the Quarter-finals over the weekend. The Netherlands played to 1-1 at HT then the Oranje scored in rapid succession with goals from Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben to make it 3-1. The Churrúas managed to pull one back in ET but it was little to late as they failed to advance cementing the fact that the World Champion will hail from Europe, arguably the strongest footballing region in the world.

Tomorrow the other Semi-final between Germany and Spain will be, as the English like to call it, "a real cracker!" Germany dismantled what many thought was the true South American world-class side, Argentina, led by the iconic-legend Diego Maradona. The Germans led by Thomas Müller and Miroslav Klose showed the world who the real world-class side was as they ripped apart the Argentine defensive back four. Spain's hard-fought win over South American surprise Paraguay was, by many accounts a bore-fest until David Villa's impressive form during the World Cup™ shown through as he picked up his fifth goal tying him with Wesley Sneijder as top scorers of the tournament.

When the United States and England both crashed out of the tournament in the Round of 16 the Netherlands became my favorite to win. The Oranje have a history with Manchester United with three players having played or currently playing with them. Jaap Stam was the first followed by one of my favorites Ruud van Nistelrooy and of course arguably one of the greatest and current United goalkeeper, Edwin van der Sar. Favorite New TV Show: The Good Guys

Throughout the last month 24 FOX teased its viewers with a new show called The Good Guys that would make its debut in June. The previews looked interesting so I checked it out and it turned out to be absolutely hilarious. It stars West Wing alum Bradley Whitford as old-school detective Dan Stark and Colin Hanks as by-the-book detective Jack Bailey who are assigned routine investigations in an attempt to prevent Detective Stark from further embarrassing the Dallas Police Department. These "routine" cases more often than not turned into full-blown ones which would elicit both scolding and praise from Assistant District Attorney Liz Traynor (former girlfriend of Jack) and their Lieutenant Ana Ruiz for their unorthodox police tactics. I love the dry, witty humor and the out-of-sequence film-making reminiscent of a JJ Abrams film. With my luck the show will be cancelled and Dan and his mustache will not live on.

USA Advances to Round of 16 in a Thriller

Having come into the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ ranked 14th in the World and drawn into a relatively tough Group C consisting of 8th ranked England and Slovenia, Algeria ranked 25th and 30th respectively. Many believed the Americans had a great chance to advance to the Round of 16 if they continued their great play exhibited through qualifying. Their path however would be anything but easy. What occurred over the course of the Group Stages would go down as perhaps one of the defining moments in United States soccer history.

The first Group C match was against England which was their first head-to-head meeting in World Cup play since the Miracle Match of 1950 FIFA World Cup™ held in Belo Horizonte, Brazil where the Americans shocked the world defeating the mighty British 1-0. This match was expected to be evenly matched unlike the one 50 years ago.

The English by far were the better side at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in the first half however despite their dominance the Americans managed to level before HT after a huge gaffe by the English keeper Robert Green. Clint Dempsey's relatively easy shot on goal rebounded off Green's hands and trickled over the line into goal. The Americans came out with more passion and grit and was the better side in the second half and gained a little respect for holding the English at bay settling for a 1-1 draw.

The second match in Group C was against Slovenia at Ellis Park. Controversy was never far away when the Americans graced the pitch during the World Cup. This match was a prime example of that due to another dubious call that influenced the outcome of the game. Looking at the first half statistics one would wonder how the Slovenians with only two shots on goal would have a 2 nil lead. Each were defensive lapses as Slovenia took advantage of too much space at the back for the first and executed a superb counterattack to double their lead. The American's defense was an Achilles heal that many felt would be their undoing in South Africa.

Yet despite the two goal deficit the Americans came out on the attack in the second half once again dominating. With a few changes they scored from Landon Donovan and Michael Bradley to level the match with ten minutes remaining. Almost five minutes later Maurice Edu and all of world thought the Americans had made an improbable comeback when the go-ahead goal smashed into the back of the net however to everyone's astonishment and utter bewilderment the blind ref from Mali refused to let it stand as he wrongly thought a American player was offside.

No arguing or diplomacy mattered as the goal was officially ruled out. Despite the blind refs inability to see what everyone else in the world saw the Americans managed to earn another important point with a hard fought draw. Using the angst and ire from that match the Americans would use the controversy to spur them on into the final deciding match against the Algerians. Win they advanced to the Round of 16 and top the Group, draw things would be complicated, and lose they would go home wondering what could have been.

What happened in the final match at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria was one of the most dramatic, exhilarating moments in American sports history. Algeria just as they had done earlier to stymie the English couple days earlier put up an incredible defensive-minded match. Statistically the match was even with several chances having gone awry for the Algerians in the first half. The Americans seized upon the momentum from the first half and piled on the pressure. It was just a matter of time before there was a breakthrough goal. The FIFA-lead controversy would once again rear it's ugly head with another phantom offside rule that canceled out another superb goal, this time by Clint Dempsey. The Americans had so many chances that they could not capitalize on and any other day they may have seen one or two goals. Frustration crept in amongst the supporters around the world and probably the players as well when the score remained 0-0 with the match nearing the 90 minute mark and ET having been announced.

Just when it looked like all was lost and the Americans would earn another draw and probably head home defeated a last gasp counterattack broke down the staunch Algerian defense. With Jozy Altidore on the right flank using his pace to his advantage he sent in a cross to the center hoping a teammate could get on the end of it to score. It appeared the Algerian keeper had snuffed out the danger however he was only able to block the ball and in so doing it rebounded into Landon Donovan's path who instinctively smashed it into the back of the net! Pandemonium erupted throughout the stadium and everywhere else in the world where American supporters were watching. Euphoria and tears of joy were evident after Donovan's remarkable winning goal saw the Americans top the Group and move on to face Ghana in the Round of 16 on Saturday June 26th.

With their exhilarating 91st minute goal by now legendary US sporting hero Landon Donovan that win over Algeria set several historical milestones.

It is definitely a sign that the new campaign is getting closer. The way last season ended being so close to the title but falling just short has brought the desire for more Premier League Football to the forefront. In my mind club football > international competitions, period.

The Kid: Ken Griffey, Jr. - Saviour of Mariners' Baseball

A few days have passed sine the Seattle Mariners icon, George Kenneth Griffey, Jr. retired from Major League Baseball - an announcement coming exactly twenty-three years to the day of his being chosen as the first overall pick in the 1987 MLB Draft. Hard to imagine it has been more than twenty years since he donned the M's cap. So much has happened with the organization during his two decades in the game.

Many already knew of his potential for greatness, some even saying he could be a future hall-of-famer. He definitely had great baseball lineage as his father, Ken Griffey, Sr., was a member of the vaunted Big Red Machine. Griffey grew up in the Cincinnati Reds' clubhouse during his father's years there and witnessed The Great Eight: Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Tony Perez, George Foster, Cesar Geronimo, Ken Griffey, Sr., and Dave Concepcion lead the Reds to back-to-back World Series Championships in 1975-76.

Baseball in Seattle prior to Griffey's arrival was not exciting. The M's were never a contending team and therefore attendance at games were low. This would all change in 1989 when Griffey finally made his MLB debut. Ironically the very thing that fans lacked, excitement, passion, a real desire to go the ballpark he brought in abundance during his eleven years as a Mariner. That infectious attitude was evident in everything that he did. His batting practices especially were a joy to watch as he brought a kid-like approach to the game.

He loved to wear his hat turned backwards and always goofed around - he just plain enjoyed the game of baseball. That aspect was one of the many things that endeared him to the city and his fans. Everyone wanted to see their new favorite baseball son, The Kid. Win or lose everyone knew you did not leave early until after Griffey's last at bat because if you did you could miss one of his patented towering HRs into the right-field upper deck bleachers of the Kingdome.

After several years of mediocrity and the baseball-killing strike of 1994 many doubted whether or not the sport could make a comeback. When the next season rolled around Mariners and Ken Griffey helped lead the way back. After all the blood, sweat, and tears the word playoffs actually meant something in Seattle! It was a time of true excitement and immeasurable joy and when the dust finally settled baseball in Seattle would never be the same again ...

The Anticipation for 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™

There is less than a week left until the first matches commence in the most popular sporting tournament in the world, The 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™. The excitement has reached a crescendo as each qualified nation are finalizing their preparations for the month-long tournament that will determine the Champions of the World!
Citizens of the thirty-two nations place their collective hearts and minds into the skilled hands or more literally the feet of their respective national teams. Even in the United States where football/soccer is still not the most popular sport the excitement is more evident than in years past.

Every four years all countries have high expectations that this will be their time, their year and they will witness history as the World Cup Trophy is raised by their new national heroes. For three long years prior to the World Cup each national team goes through a qualifying process and once they accomplish that each coach has to make agonizing decisions of trimming their respective squads from a preliminary thirty-man to the final twenty-three. There is much fanfare in the media including both controversy and disappointment for players and supporters alike. The disappointment of being cut after years of blood, sweat and tears can be heartbreaking but nothing can be worse than picking up an unwanted injury that would have an effect on whether that particular player could represent their country on the world stage.

Injuries of course are part of the sport and they happen at inopportune times however it appears in this World Cup year the bad luck has occurred more frequently to many more high-profile players. There are several players where injury quickly knocked them out of competing in South Africa for the respective countries. David Beckham tore his Achilles tendon while playing with Italian club side AC Milan on March 14th ruling him out until year's end. He was aiming to be the first Englishmen to play in four World Cups. Charlie Davies, a young American was seriously hurt in a near fatal car accident in October of 2009 and after months of intense rehabilitation had planned to return to his club team Sochaux of French Ligue 1 to complete any last rehab in hopes of being cleared medically and therefore be included in the thirty-man preliminary squad. He was not cleared and will miss the World Cup.

Another long-term injured player from England is Owen Hargreaves. He had been hampered with knee problems for years and after his transfer to Manchester United in 2007 and a full season of first team football needed double-knee surgery. He has yet to gain full fitness for his club which means he too will miss playing in South Africa. More recently Michael Ballack, captain of Germany, tore ligaments in his right ankle while playing with English side Chelsea in the FA Cup Final 2010 in May. The injury was severe enough that he will be unable to play for his country. A month later American Jozy Altidore sprained his right ankle in a training session however early reports are he will be fit enough to compete in their opening match against England on June 12th.

Other players were not as fortunate as Altidore such and Andrea Pirlo of Italy who suffered a calf injury during an international friendly against Mexico on June 2nd and will most likely miss helping Italy defend the title. The injured have kept piling up as the days crept closer to June 11th. Two other high-profile captains, England's Rio Ferdinand and Ivory Coast's Didier Drogba suffered terrible injuries both on Friday June 4th. During training Ferdinand hurt his knee which turned out to be knee ligament damage that will rule him out of action for a month or more. Drogba dislocated his right elbow during an international friendly against Japan. Both of these injuries will keep them from leading their fellow teammates out in hopes of winning the Trophy. While writing this news came early this morning that the Netherlands' Arjen Robben was removed from their international friendly against Hungary with a hamstring problem that may rule him out or at best limit his participation in South Africa.

FIFA must do something about this injury epidemic. As stated earlier injuries are a part of the sport however this year and the months and weeks leading up to 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ the injuries have occurred at an alarming rate. Throughout each players' respective seasons they have been run to the breaking point domestically, internationally, and in other competitions. They are in top form and probably a lot more fit than most of the world however they rarely have time to rest their bodies and heal from playing for nine months at such a high level. The weeks leading up to the World Cup should be a time of preparation however questions need to be asked regarding the need to play actual friendly matches where injury is more likely to occur. I am looking forward to an exciting tournament and hope both the United States and England have a very strong showing in addition to every Manchester United player that proudly represents their respective country in South Africa.

Superbike World Championship 2010

On Monday, May 31st we were off to the races! My brother who works for Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah had two tickets to the HANNspree FIM Superbike World Championship 2010. We had never been out to the racetrack since it opened in 2006. We are normally not race fans but thought we would try it out especially since our son Joshua loves Lightning McQueen from Disney-Pixar's Cars. To say that he liked is an understatement ... he absolutely LOVED it! We have a video showing how much he enjoyed every minute of it! He is so cute

Memorial Day 2010 - Dishwasher Edition

Memorial Day Weekend 2010 started differently than any other in recent memory. In years past we would take it easy on Saturday and attend church on Sunday per our usual routine. Then on Monday maybe attend the Annual Smith Family Potluck in Salt Lake City. However our plans changed when our dishwasher having died a slow and gruesome death a few days earlier destroying several of our dishes and utensils in the process. It became very apparent that a new one was needed.

We thought the long holiday would be perfect opportunity to buy a new one as there were sure to be holiday sales throughout the valley. After researching a bit my wife Emily found the best deal at Sears so we packed up the kids first thing Saturday morning and headed to make our purchase. Little did we know that this would be the beginning of a very long day as we had no idea what lay in store for us!

Upon our arrival with the store just opening knowing that the installation would not be done by professionals we were anxious to find an associate or Blue Appliance Crew to assist us so we could get on our way and begin the process of installing our new dishwasher. Our little plan went terribly awry when there was no Blue Crew Member to be found! After what seemed like a half and hour of waiting and trying to contain the impatient children, Lissa and Joshua, someone arrived. We quickly chose the model and style that fit our budget. We purchased it and brought it home eager to get started.

As soon as we put the kids down for their nap we began removing our old dishwasher. The removal process seemed to us like it would be rather simple, however due to our small kitchen and the location it took much longer than expected. Once removed we discovered we were missing a couple pieces of hardware and therefore needed to take several trips to the Home Depot and Lowe's before we finally were able to successfully proceed. The day grew longer as we still did not have it installed and with the two-year olds up their presence only compounded the situation. Just as we were nearing completion after hooking up the electricity, the water intake hose, and drain hose we discovered after turning on the water that it still leaked. Since we lacked a good amount of space as well as the water intake hose being too short taking the dishwasher in and out was very difficult.

Finally what we had to do was unhook the hose from the wall under the sink to fully tighten the other end attached to the dishwasher. We went through this agonizing process three or four times as we still couldn't stop the leak. As night fell and after nine long hours we finally had no leakage and it appeared that everything was working correctly, so we completed the installation by attaching it to the counter and putting it through some preset rinses as instructed. We were relieved the process was over and we could rest our sore and weary bodies and enjoy the rest of the holiday weekend recovering.

Memorial Day 2010

Memorial Day is a special time of year as it allows for each of us to commemorate all the American soldiers who died while in military service protecting the country they love and the citizens they swore to protect. The Stars & Stripes are flown proudly and it is also a time of reflection as friends and loved ones visit cemeteries and memorials. I am forever indebted to those who did not return home, who were not able to be reunited with their families and loved ones, as most were young and full of life when they died serving our country.

When My Love for Everything Man United Began

I readily admit the beginning of my support for Manchester United began not too long ago. My younger brother, a ten-year veteran supporter of the Red Devils, first introduced me to them. He lived in Argentina during the 1998 FIFA World Cup France™ and caught the love for the "beautiful game" while there. He witnessed firsthand Argentina and England's match that saw them The Three Lions eventually losing in penalty kicks to La Albiceleste after a scoreless draw in regular time. He recalls the travesty of David Beckham being sent off via Simeone's theatrics and upon his arrival home his new found love for football flourished. That incident with Beckham had peaked his interest becoming a catalyst for his future support of The Greatest Club in the World, Manchester United.

For awhile I noticed he was religiously following a sport that was not of much interest to me. The only time I watched soccer was during the World Cup where the US Soccer Team would compete. I would get caught up in the media hype then be let down once I realized our nation's team was not even close to being in the same class as the rest of the world. One day he mentioned that he followed two club teams, Boca Juniors from Argentina and an English team named Manchester United. I had heard of United but there was very little coverage of soccer/football on ESPN at the time. He showed me a few United match highlights that included many of the greats. There was one new player, a Dutchman named Ruud van Nistelrooy, whose talent and skill intrigued me. There was one match in particular where the former PSV Eindhoven man became famous in my eyes and just as my brother's love for United began with Beckham mine started with van Nistelrooy following this infamous post-match incident.

During the 2003-04 English Premier League Season Manchester United and their hated title rivals Arsenal Gunners met and battled to a scoreless draw. Tensions are always high when these two clubs meet with many matches seemingly ending in controversy. This match nicknamed by the press as the "Battle of Old Trafford," hostility was especially high. Upon viewing the highlights and witnessing the unmitigated post-match abuse of van Nistelrooy by the cowardly Arsenal players: Martin Keown, Lauren, Ray Parlour, Ashley Cole and Kolo Touré following his unfortunate penalty kick miss in extra-time. The post-match fracas started a chain reaction that forever cemented my undying love and support for everything Man United and conversely Arsenal forever my disdain!

While no player is bigger than the club, van Nistelrooy for awhile took on legendary status. Also, during this period I realized United was more than just a football club; it had rich history with legendary players who had proudly worn the colors and graced the pitch, some of them even giving their own lives for the cause. Men like Duncan Edwards, Roger Byrne, Sir Bobby Charlton, Dennis Law, George Best, Steve Bruce, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, and David Beckham, Roy Keane, and Ole Gunnar Solskjær. Obviously the current crop of players, legends in their own right, such as Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Christiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and many others still attempting to make a name for themselves.

Unfortunately the great Ruud van Nistelrooy would let me down as he throught he was bigger than the club. At Man United this was a sure sign of trouble as no one crossed the Gaffer, Sir Alex Ferguson. The situation could not be resolved so many believed SAF made the correct decision by selling him to the infamous Spanish giants, Real Madrid, who United had previously dealt with when David Beckham was sold to them following the 2002-03 season. His departure required some adjustments but like all United supporters know it was soon apparent that Ruud's departure was a blessing in disguise as more glory arrived to Old Trafford in the following years with the rise of Christiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Co. leading the charge. The following years brought a UEFA Champions League trophy, FIFA Club World Championship and most importantly three more Premier League titles which allowed United to equal the Liverpool's record of eighteen with the most in English first division football.

Now any who have read this having been born United supporters might easily pigeon-hole me as a typical Yankee glory-hunter and would probably be right, however, my counterargument would be that the season I began following were the quieter years for United as they had not won the league since Beckham's departure with the only silverware being the Carling League Cup. So if I was a true glory-hunter why would I choose to follow them prior to them hauling in a bunch of accolades and titles which didn't arrive until the 2006-07 season? My personal history of supporting teams is honorable as most if not all the those I follow the period of support has now reached at least a decade or more. In baseball I have followed both the Atlanta Braves and Seattle Mariners since I was in elementary school. BYU college football my other love began while in my teenage years. I could go on and on. One has to start somewhere and so this where my journey began. Once I begin supporting a team my loyalty never wavers and they have my undying support through thick and thin. So, this my friends is the origin of my support for Manchester United. Glory, Glory Man United!!

UEFA Champions League Final Madrid 2010

To make things simple, I don't give flying flip who wins tomorrow in the UEFA Champions League Final 2010. We made Bayern Munich look silly and were sufferers of a little bit of bad luck when Wayne Rooney injured ligaments in his ankle and never fully recovered. Inter Milan is definitely the better side and should win plus they knocked out The Rent Boys (Chelsea) which deserves praise whenever that feat is accomplished. Want it to be all over so the footballing world's focus will turn to more important things, the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ then more importantly the Manchester United North American Tour 2010 in preparation for the beginning of the 2010/11 EPL Campaign.

Man United Football Withdrawal

It hasn't been two weeks since Manchester United's 2009-10 campaign ended and I'm dying for some more football. The way the last few weeks of the season ended left me unfulfilled. All the critics and pundits predicted that the club would suffer for selling Christiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid and not resigning Carlos Tevez.

Well Wayne Rooney almost single-handedly quieted all the skeptics as he scored 34 goals in all competitions before he was unlucky and injured his ankle during the most important two-week period of the campaign. The season was somewhat successful as we did finish only one point behind eventual league and FA Cup winners Chelsea. While we did defend the Carling Cup the real silverware however eluded us i.e. Barclay's Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and The FA Cup Trophies.

Here's to hoping management and Sir Alex Ferguson realizes the club needs a couple reinforcements so we can strengthen what we currently have (an already strong team) and truly challenge in all competitions. Our options appear to be plentiful however with the club in debt up to our ears from the irresponsible and greedy owners, the American Glazer brothers, all us supporters are very skeptical about the ability to bring in important reinforcements that will help take back what's ours from Chelsea, the EPL Trophy, that is currently on loan for a year in London at Stamford Bridge. Also, just as important is our advancement in Europe as our showing was a big disappointment despite our strong play in the 2010 Champions League quarter-finals against German Champions and strong European rival Bayern Munich.

Another TV season is winding down with all the shows airing their finales these past two weeks. When May comes around I'm already looking forward to the fall for the continuation of each series especially if there is a cliffhanger. Unfortunately each good thing has to have an end and such is the case this year, as I have to say goodbye, unwillingly, to some of my favorite long-running series.

Been introduced to some new shows such as NCIS: LA, The Middle, Modern Family (will have to post about these them later), and Miami Medical which have been pleasantly enjoyable. Each have stepped it up a notch especially 24, CSI: NY, Survivor: Heroes vs Villains, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Smallville, and Cold Case. Even American Idol, which started out slowly and at times was underwhelming has excelled as the Finale edges closer.

After eight action packed-thrilled seasons of 24, Jack Bauer and Co. has been canceled leaving a huge hole in my future Monday nights however a planned movie will allow me to have something to look forward to after next Monday's series finale concludes.

Monk has finally ended after a glorious and hilarious filled eight seasons. Who knew that the Italian taxi-driver from Wings would end up with this kind of success. I am definitely looking forward to when we can finally finish watching the final five or six episodes (thank you DVR) and discover the mystery as to who killed his beloved Trudy.

Seven seasons appear to be the limit for the CBS' crime drama Cold Case. Each Sunday another case brought out the detective in me as I tried to figure out who the killer was each time. Each season has delivered and I am very disappointed that it's time has come. We're lucky to have it spared one final season as it was due to leave alongside Without A Trace last year. I'm sure Lilly Rush and Co. will continue to solve the needed cold cases when they go off the air.

Miami Medical wasn't even given a fair shot and the news it won't be renewed leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. Most everything that CBS puts out does well.

Smallville will be around for one more "super" season, their tenth overall. Clark Kent hopefully will be allowed to don the cape and Red and Blue of the Man of Steel leaving the show as Superman on the ultimate high (no pun intended) although I'm not holding my breath. I've enjoyed the ride and no doubt believe it will go out with a bang.

Can Blogging Be Time Consuming?

Multi-year Recap, Part I ...

Well, it's been nearly three years since my last post. Pretty pathetic if you ask me ... but you can't dwell on the past you have to move and look forward, so here I am. A lot has occurred so I'll do my best to summarize in as little space as possible.

The most important event if you've read my recent (2007) posts is that were successful in getting pregnant and now have two healthy children. Lissa and Joshua were born February 28, 2008. They are healthy and happy two-year old twins that we love and adore. If you follow my wife's blog: The Smith Symphony you'll get an in depth view of our life with them.

In others aspects of our lives we've had changes as well. Emily chose to quit her job teaching at Mt. Nebo Junior High to be a stay-at-home mom. It was difficult leaving but the kids come first. We enjoyed having her at home immensely but like all things it too had to come to an end. This past year she returned to the workforce and was hired to be Springville High School's new band director. This new responsibility brought different challenges than her previous teaching at the junior high/middle school level .. that of marching band. After a long school year which is about over she's made the decision to move on and just last week Emily received the news she'd been waiting for ... she was hired by Mapleton Junior High as their new band director. The strains and stresses of high school were just too much so we're hoping this new job will allow for more time with the kids.

There were changes for me as well in my employment. After two years working as a temp for SOS Staffing at Nu Skin Enterprises, Inc., I was officially hired as a Product Inspector in April of 2008. I stopped going to school when Lissa and Joshua arrived and began working full-time. Eventually (can't recall when) but the opportunity arose for me to switch from working the day shift to the swing shift. I received an increase in pay and I have been able to spend the day with the kids which has been great.

Well, it's time to catch up on some TV ....

The Lord Works In Mysterious Ways, Part I . . .

I'm really not sure where to begin in tyring to describe the last few days events. I guess the best place to start is the beginning. Following the miraculous and marvelous news regarding Emily's positive pregnancy tests something occurred at work that only added to already happy news. The news came to us that Pam, our current team leader at Nu Skin has accepted a new position within the department and will be moving on as soon as her replacement is hired and trained. Now, you maybe wondering how this affects me deserves to be included in a blog post, right? Well, the reason is simple. The past few months I have been given more responsibility and on many occassions took over for Pam when she had the day off or called in sick. This allowed me to learn on-the-fly what it took to run a team. To my surprise I handled it almost seamlessly. Each time I gained in both experience and confidence. These new-found feelings regarding myself helped me to come to the conclusion that I could actually be a team leader and therefore began talk of actually applying for the position.

The Lord truly works in mysterious ways and knows exactly when and how He feels we should experience His incalculable blessings. These past three years leading up to this particular time, so far as been worth it!! Of all the heartache and hours upon hours of misery and complete sadness we have now been blessed with a successful Invitro fertilization (IVF) and have received postiive pregnancy results. These results are well beyond anything we could have even imagined as we have been used to numerous failures. This is truly a joyous time and will always be remembered!! I am so grateful and indebted to the Lord for his patience with us and allowing us this opportunity to bring a sweet spirit into our home. I will continue to pray fervently that Emily's prenancy will progress healthily and result in the intended outcome. I am also forever grateful for loving parents and family from both sides who have sacrificed so much for us to be where we are. I will never ever be able to repay them.

I've decided to post once again after an extremely long hiatus. No, I have not dropped the ball completely but have been extremely busy with work and everyday life and put this on the back burner ... until now!! The reason, BYU Football kickoffs in 20 days, 17 hrs, and less than 17 min. Sept. 1st will be the day that they begin their defense as reigning Mountain West Conference Champions as they open the 2007 season hosting the Pac-10's Arizona Wildcats!!!!!! A day filled with high expectations as they have "Raised the Bar." Rah, Rah, Rah, Rah, Rah ... Goooooo Cougars!!

Also, today officially was the opening of the 2007/08 English Premier League!! Manchester United kicks off tomorrow morning, 9 AM MT vs. the Reading Royals at Old Trafford. They will be defending their EPL Championship in hopes of attaining an unprecedented 17th League Title!! Glory, Glory, Man Utd!!!

2004 Journal Entry

I found an interesting journal entry in one of my Word docs and would like to post them here. As you'll see they were dated in February of 2004 before I was married. It is interesting how things have changed and at the same time stayed the same. Well without further adieu:

February 15, 2004

What an interesting day I had today. It was not a typical Sabbath. Every six months we have Stake Conference and our time had come for that very meeting. The session was excellent. The speakers were very inspired, I recall the first counselor speaking on forgiveness and how it is a commandment to forgive others when we they have wronged us. An important point that I especially remember was, “not forgiving others only hurts the individual unwilling to forgive.” How true that is. I have experienced that very thing and continue to struggle with it. The rest of the day went just fine. I had my weekly PPI with Bishop Fehlberg what a tremendous help he’s been in my life. I know he’s been called of God and leads the Cascade Center Ward according to how the Lord wishes it to be led. Having been in the ward for so many years, he is the second bishop to serve but I’ll save those thoughts and feelings for another time.

Now for some trivial thoughts that have been on my mind these lasts couple of days. First, I despise how Major League Baseball is run. It can no longer fan friendly, unless you live in New York. What has just occurred will go down in history as one of the biggest travesties in sports. One of the best players in the game today, Alex Rodriguez, was traded from the lowly Texas Rangers to the Yankees, a team that will go down in history as the “Evil Empire” for its ability to buy anyone and anything and not let any of the 29 others teams have a chance at winning. Now one may say they haven’t won a World Series since 2000 but a better rebuttal would be if they win, again they will have won the World Series 27 teams, yes that’s 27 times more than 98% of all the Major League teams. Competitive balance doesn’t exist and will never occur as long as George Steinbrenner is allowed to rule the league with his checkbook. Next to the Players Association, another evil entity that is probably the strongest in the world. Unions are good for business but probably only half the times are they fair and equitable. How this organization has the last word on anything, which occurs, is beyond me. Knowing a little about the history of MLB I can see where unions were needed but they have outlived their existence. By now I’m sure you’re thinking I need to get a grip and I probably do to some extent, however, if you think this is bad trying talking to a Red Sox or a Chicago Cubs fan.

Before you think I’m obsessed with many worldly things, I have been doing some adjusting of my past habits of staying up too late. By turning the TV off 11:00 and being in bed no later than midnight, I have found this be successful so far and can feel the habit slowly being broken. I know that with the Lord’s help I will be able to continue to endure and soon make it a good habit, which will allow for more freedom in my life. Right now, it has given the extra time to write down my thoughts here. This part of my life has been off and on. I know writing in our personal journals is a commandment; however, I have for so many years omitted it from my life and I vow to not let it happen again. I pray for the strength to remember to make it part of my daily routine before I retire for the night. I definitely beats sitting in front of the TV until the wee hours of the morning. It one of many steps I am taking and will continue to take to make sure I am doing all I can to be worthy of all the blessings that the Lord sees fit to bestow upon me such as an eternal companion, and the ultimate blessing of salvation in His kingdom.

February 16, 2004

Today was President’s Day, a day off from the rigors of school but also a day which there was a necessity, work. I currently work at Macey’s Food and Drug in Pleasant Grove. I work in the butcher block back in the store’s Meat Department. I have been working there since August of 2002. My work is enjoyable and my fellow employees make work pleasant. I especially enjoy my interaction with a wonderful deaf man, James Killoran. While I am no way fluent in Sign Language, we are able to communicate. He is very skilled at being able to communicate with everyone; however, it sure helps when I have a tiny bit of background in Sign. For this very purpose, I took a beginning sign language course last semester in order to increase my level of proficiency. It is amazing despite our language barrier we can carry on conversations like any other. It might take extra work but it is sure worth the effort. I am grateful for my association and friendship with him. He truly makes work the best.

Before I went to work, I spent the day enjoying the fact that school was out. While I should have caught up on my reading, instead I treated myself to a movie and lunch. Prior to that, however, I made sure to study the scriptures. This is something which I have promised myself that I would continue to do until it became second nature. So far, I am doing excellent. I now need to work on the problem of studying on the weekends as well. Of all the days, Sundays should be the most intense. As the day went on, I went to the theater and watched an excellent movie, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. It starred Russell Crowe and Paul Betany in a period piece during the Napoleonic wars, with the majority of the film taking place on the water. Crowe was captain of a vessel that was off the coasts of South America, chasing and being chased by French privateers. Privateers are mercenaries hired by a country, given their particular flag, and set out to wreak havoc on the enemy, usually completely obliterating the vessel or ship. It was extremely profitable for them because not only were they paid by the country they were aligned with they also kept whatever spoils were available. Afterwards I ate lunch at Pizza Hut, excellent food but horrible for my body, another thing I am trying unsuccessfully to curb, my diet of junk.

After work, I came directly home and proceeded to watch the BYU vs. Colorado St. basketball game that was one by BYU 79-76. A well fought road win, their second consecutive one. That was the highlight on the sports front. Unfortunately, ARod’s repulsive trade from the Rangers to Yankees was signed off by MLB’s Commissioner Bud “The Little Weasel” Selig. And to make matters worse the “Evil Empire” continues to throw money around like it was candy at a parade are on the verge of signing a future Hall of Fame pitcher fresh off an incredible stint with the Atlanta Braves, Greg Maddux. With the inability and the unwillingness of many of players to sign with other teams who wish to employ them the Yankees casually stroll in flash the cash and continue to create controversy with every breath all the while every other team and specifically every fan outside of New York swearing under their collective breaths. When will this madness ever end? I think it would take a miracle the stop the money mongering Steinbrenner from buying up every All-Star player. I think the only thing stopping him is there are just nine positions on a baseball team with a few bench players and relief pitchers. I am seriously at the point where there is no longer fun waiting for Spring Training when no serious-minded baseball person knows the Yankees are unstoppable. Believe me I have thought about the saying that is commonly used in sports and in fact contributes to almost all the players on that hideous Yankees roster, “if you can’t beat ‘em join ‘em.” If it weren’t for my incessant vitriol for George Steinbrenner and the Yankees, I would do just that. For all those of my progenitors who may be reading this, don’t worry I need this space to give vent to my feelings. While it doesn’t change one thing, it helps to release some anger and resentment. I promise in the future to have different aspects of my life recorded. Until then, I hope every player on the Yankees roster has their worst year, a miracle does occur, and the Yankees fail to win the World Series for the fourth consecutive year!

February 17, 2004

How my feelings of angst have been kindled since my last entry. While I am still disgusted in how business is run in professional baseball, I am consigned to the fact that I can still enjoy rooting for the Yankees to LOSE. I have also realized that there are definitely more important things to concern myself with such as getting my sorry self back to the temple. I have, for the last few months found reasons and excuses not to attend the House of the Lord. Today in my Doctrine & Covenants class we were discussing Zion and how to achieve that perfect state of the pure in heart. Many things that I am currently doing well are stepping-stones for bigger and better things. My troubles and trials need extra attention, meaning I need more than prayer and scripture study. The Spirit touched me deeply in that class when my teacher, Sister Christensen once again challenged us to attend the temple in whatever capacity. I am promising myself and the Lord that my temple attendance will increase. If for some reason I cannot attend a session I will at least be on the holy grounds. I am in the need of all the assistance the Lord can spare. I know through his Son and the power of the Atonement anything and everything is possible. I prayer for success in all I do. The Church is true and I am truly blessed to be a member of the Lord’s kingdom here on earth.

Contemplations

Our vacation to Washington, D.C., Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Chicago has, as previously mentioned, given me a newfound respect and heartfelt appreciation for our nation’s history. For one interested in US History and Political Science it was crucial I go back East to see the places that represent our past. I thought about many things yesterday while at work, one of them being the opportunity to walk where famous historical figures lived and walked themselves so many years ago; to see, touch, and smell pure history. It is extremely difficult to express in words or comprehend the full meaning of it all. We truly have an amazing history! I am privileged and honored to step foot on hallowed and sacred ground as we visited Arlington National Cemetery, the Civil War Battlefields of Antietam and Gettysburg, and the National War Veterans Memorials. We also walked through Ford’s Theatre and toured The House Where Lincoln Died, in addition to the Capitol where upon entering the Old Senate Chamber I experienced a profound feeling of respect and humility. Within that room many incredible historical events occurred.

I was overtaken with a sense of pride in our nation for we in just a short amount of time have accomplished a great deal. Who would have thought the American Colonies would become the United States of America, a country that 99.9% of the world’s nations look to as an example of democracy. Our past is unbelievable and instills a sense of deep contemplation; I even commented to Emily that in several locations I felt that the history was “so thick it could be cut with a knife!” Those days combined with the many others I have and will write about will remain with me for the rest of my life. I am extremely grateful and feel privileged to have been born into this great nation; to be considered a citizen of the United States of America . . . land of the free and home of brave!

While most of our time was spent visiting D.C. and the surrounding areas, we did have time to develop a stronger relationship with Matt, Shelly, and Ellie Astle. We owe them a debt of gratitude for allowing us to spend such a long time there. I miss our daily association and being adored by our cute niece, Ellie. She is such a sweetie. I will always remember waking up to her running and dancing, as well as her calling us “Na-non” and “Emmy.” Matt and Shelly are doing and excellent job as parents and we hope to be able to emulate their exceptional parental example someday.

Future Persian Gulf War Veterans Memorial?

For those who may or not know, Emily and I just returned from our unbelievable trip to D.C. While there we visited many things, one of them was the war memorials along the Mall. I have had much to think about today and was contemplating whether one day there would be a Gulf War Memorial somewhere along the [National] Mall. I would love to hear what each of you have to say about this, so if you have time please will you let me know how you feel?

I proposed that question, grammatically incorrect, to all of my brothers and sister, my parents, as well as Emily my wife, and sister-in-law Lissa and Shelly and her husband Matt. I wanted to see if either of them had an opinion and if so gather their thoughts for my Blog. Here are some of the first responses:

Mike Smith: “Any significant/prolonged military engagement should have a memorial in my opinion. My guess is they’ll eventually erect one for the Gulf War (1st and 2nd) once time passes and the voice of opposition cools … much like what happened with the Vietnam Memorial.”

Dad Smith: “It depends on weather we pull out before the job is completed. If the Democrats really wanted us to withdraw, now then why not cut off the funds? They are (some Republicans as well) making these moves purely for political reasons. If Iraq turns into a form of democracy that is friendly to the West then there should be one for memorial for both wars.”
