So.... the Birdy's going to get all sentimental and mushy for a moment, but I became the very happy owner of a beautiful piece of jewelry. No, no, don't start the wedding bells chiming, I was just very surprised by a heartfelt gift by Mister Magpie, and best of all, it wasn't for any reason, it was simply Just Because. And we're not into big-gesture gifts, so this was especially heartfelt, and he picked a piece from one of my favorite Seattle jewelry designers, Erin Jane.

I've been an admirer of Erin Jane Designs jewelry for a while. Her pieces are gorgeously simple with an organic, handmade feel to some of the asymmetrical pieces. The metals are often lightly burnished, giving them a warm glow, making them look soft and natural when worn. The way the gemstones are presented, they can range from bold to incredibly delicate and nuanced. I like that she uses a lot of recycled metals, which is so very mindful, and it's nice to get a sense that the materials have a little mileage on them. The pieces are elegantly singular and suitable for everyday wear. She has a website that explains her process and background and her online shop is through Etsy.

The piece that recently caught my eye was an emerald in a cushion setting of brushed recycled gold. It meant the world to me that Brock saw how much I liked it and it was such a completely wonderful surprise to now have it on my hand as I type. I've always meant to share how much I enjoy Erin Jane's jewelry, and now I have an extra-special reason, now that I'm wearing one of her treasures. If you're looking for a special bit of sparkle, take a look at her pieces, I hope her jewelry makes you as happy as it's made me: {1} Colombian Emerald Ring in 14k gold and brushed matte finish, {2} Chocolate diamond and 14k gold wedding band in matte finish, {3} Rose-cut Labradorite ring in 14k gold and sterling, {4} Carnelian free-form rose-cut ring in brushed 14k gold, {5} Rutilated Quartz teardrop earrings in 14k gold fill, {6} Silver and gold bar bracelet with green sapphires
My name is the Jaunty Magpie... and I'm addicted to coffee table books. In my collection of giant photo books too large for an average bookshelf height (yay, vertical stacking!), I have books about old clocks, food/cooking, t-shirts, x-ray art, unusual record album designs, even books that aren't even in English but the illustrations are gorgeous -- and now I have another one to add to my book-cave, Barbara Barry's Around Beauty.

I was very fortunate to be invited to an event at Bellevue Towers, where interior designer Barbara Barry's furnishings were displayed in one of the Tower's penthouses. It was showcasing her pieces at Maisins as well as promoting her book, Around Beauty, that came out late last year. It's a beautiful book full of incredible photography by David Meredith, reflecting Barry's elegant, calm interior design style. It's not just a photo book, Barry lists the things she considers when designing a space, like proportion and the harmony of objects, and her process for approaching a new design. She always has fresh flowers in her rooms, and they definitely add a touch of freshness and life to a space. She has a great quote in the book about how important she considers nature with the balance of a room's design: "In nature, nothing stands alone. The whole supports the parts and at the same time the parts support the whole. And they do it effortlessly."

Barbara Barry's design style is probably more formal than what I could maintain (have you seen my chaotic home??), but I still love looking through the different room designs, from dining areas to laundry rooms. I appreciate her taking on all living spaces, even the most practical ones, there's even a few photos of an enviably elegant linen closet. Interior design books have an added attraction because you're looking into another person's private space. Sure it's a very idealized look, but our inspiration should come from the very best. Barry's spaces are well designed but liveable. The photos look as though a person just momentarily left the room, as there are little signs of life to be seen, like an unfinished cup of tea or an artful scattering of jewelry and perfume on a dresser table.

Interior design books like these are a little like a trip to fantasy-land, you find yourself momentarily slipping into the notion of dwelling in one of these rooms. It makes you more mindful about your own living space, considering how a room gets transformed into a place you truly feel at home in.

Happy Birthday to Me, Happy Birthday to Me, Happy Birthday dear Maggie-Pie... Happy ALMOST Birthday to Me. Let's just call it my Birthday Week, as it's not important what day I turn the dial on another year come and gone.

No spectacular Jaunty plans, although I do hope that I can take my actual birthday off. It's the promise I always make to myself every year that I inevitably break, to take my birthdate off. But when it's the middle of the week, or in my case, I'll be heading on vacation soon, it's too easy to just treat it like any other day. But we shall see...

The thing I love about having a birthday is the little things. Maybe I can sleep in a little longer -- the Mister can make me coffee that morning and feed the dog! And who doesn't love the free scoop of ice cream at 31 Flavors that we always looked forward to at every birthday? In a social media-riddled universe of self-obsession, sometimes what makes your special day so special is how quiet and unassuming it can be, focusing on only the things that make you happy. In my case, it will be spread across the week, so I look forward to ice cream scoops, sleeping in a little later, and maybe a stroll through my favorite shop for something special. Sure, we can do these things any day, but when it's your birthday, it feels like your own personal holiday.

There's no words that can ever explain or make sense of yesterday's tragedy at the Boston Marathon. Even as more facts are revealed from the information/misinformation overload that went on all through Monday, it will never truly make sense, so to be honest, I don't even bother trying to discern any scrap of logic in that chaos. But that doesn't mean sitting in sadness -- don't give in to anger or despair, let's get up and do something about it. Let's help where we can!

We can't predict the evil deeds of others, and we can't always prevent bad things from happening, but we can perform heroic acts in our own little ways, for a community in need and in your own city. Donate to aid groups in Boston and national groups like the Red Cross, who are assisting the recovery efforts. Emergency centers and blood banks are always in need of volunteers, donations and supplies -- do what you can in your own community so that your area is prepared, and that includes your police and fire departments. Support the first responders who run towards the danger and are heroes every day. There's been a lot of terrifying and overly-graphic images of injured victims of the Boston Marathon bombings -- this is traumatic for everyone. Check in on loved ones, offer a kind gesture. One can never be reminded too often that there are many good-hearted souls out there, and for that, hope will never be truly lost.

It sounds so cheesy and corny, but it's when we lose our compassion and desire to help -- that's when the bad guys win. Unthinkable tragedies are reminders that we should all strive towards a bravery of heart and soul, and never allow despair to set in.

I gave myself a little treat over the weekend, I spent a couple of hours wandering through the latest exhibitions at the Bellevue Arts Museum and, as always, was delighted, surprised and drawn into the visual language of art. I went in to peruse one particular exhibit, and found myself spending time on all the floors, exploring everything, which is the best possible way to spend a day at the museum.

I initially went into BAM to check out the Maneki Neko exhibit, presenting all the different ways the "lucky cat" statue with the raised paw you often see at Japanese restaurants is portrayed. It's a personal collection of maneki neko statues, along with interpretive pieces by Northwest artists. I grew up with the lucky, beckoning cat, either seeing it as decoration in homes, usually given as housewarming gifts, or given in the form of coin banks, since the figure is a representation of good fortune. It was a really beautiful and diverse collection, pieces that were unique from what we've seen before, but still the familiar cat with his same paw gesture.

The exhibitions that ended up taking most of my time were the Zoom. Italian design and photography of Aldo and Marirosa Ballo and Love Me Tender, which is a collection of multiple artists who used actual currency to create their two and three dimensional pieces. I was completely taken in by the Love Me Tender collection -- working with actual money, both paper and coins, plays with the notion of art with intrinsic value, but also a statement about the fluctuation of that currency, since its value is fleeting. The artwork ranges from humorous and whimsical, to serious political statements. I was particularly excited to see pieces by JSG Boggs, an artist who has been making hand-drawn depictions of US currency for years, but he doesn't pass them off as counterfeit notes. Boggs makes it clear they are works of art, which he trades for goods and services, which given his level of fame, the pieces are worth more than what he traded them for. His work is as much visual art as performance, in that the transaction becomes part of the realization of the piece -- I've been a longtime fan of his work, so it was wonderful to see his pieces up close and be able to examine them. All the pieces in Love Me Tender are striking -- it really deserves a good hour's worth of time to begin to absorb both the meaning and handiwork of all the artists' work.

I took an equal amount of time admiring the design and photography of the Ballo exhibit. Sleek, modern and purposeful, you can't deny the aesthetic influence of Italian product and furniture design. The collection is a shuffling of beautiful prints, vintage magazine spreads featuring the Ballo pieces, and original furniture and objects shown individually or in beautifully simple room displays. I couldn't help but think about the series Mad Men. I realize the series is no longer in its sleek 60s-era aesthetic, but being surrounded by such clean, linear design, especially with so many magazine layouts on display, I kept expecting Don Draper would walk in at any second and light up a cigarette. Admiring all the beautifully functional pieces, it makes you more aware of your living space and how when aesthetic and function are in balance, it makes a place as beautiful as it is liveable. Even if we all can't live in a perfectly-designed home or office, it's a collection that inspires a level of consideration in the objects we place around us.

Something else to consider -- I realized the next BAMignite art/afterhours party is coming up this Friday! The museum will stay open till midnight, there will be cocktails, music and a mingling atmosphere to explore the new exhibitions yourself. I've been to several of the BAMignite parties and it's a great way to experience the museum and the mood is energetic. Tickets are still available, so head to the website to make sure you have yours in time for Friday!

Jaunty Fine Print: images of art from the Bellevue Arts Museum

Say what you will about Facebook and social media, but I was so very inspired by the outpouring of visual support for equal marriage rights on people's profile photos over the last week. Who would have thought a little square could say such volumes? And more than anything else, I was inspired by the creativity people took in not only showing support, but personalizing their support, whether it's through pop culture memes, bacon and booze and the symbols of love. Cheers to you, everyone!

Apologies if I'm not linking/crediting/labeling who did what (feel free to call out credits in the comments area below) -- frankly, the problem with social media is its ease of sharing and re-sharing material -- the main point is, the degree of individuality over how this message of support is being expressed is as American as it gets. We are all Americans, we are all individuals. We came from different places, cultures and upbringing, and so it should be noted that when such singular voices act in solidarity over the support of something so simple as Equality, it's at least worth listening to the people telling their stories.

It's a little sad that equality has to be such a hard-won battle, but that doesn't mean it's not worth fighting for.

We read magazines and websites about trends and what the Next Big Thing is, but at the end of the day, the best recommendations always come from people you know. I was introduced to the beautiful handmade pieces of Omerica Organic by way of blogger friend, Rachael White, who just kicked off her tasty new blog, Set the Table. Check it out, if you haven't already given it a peek! I was immediately drawn in by Omerica Organic's beautiful use of wood in their jewelry and accessories. They really celebrate it as a material, it's not used incidentally or as a texture backdrop to other materials, the beautiful wood grain is accentuated in each piece. It makes every item one of a kind. Even when the wood is colored, you don't forget what the piece was made from, and wood has a natural warmth and tactile quality as a material. As their website says: Wood is Good.

I also love their eco-mindfulness in the production of each custom made-to-order piece -- it's a cool workshop in Denver, Colorado, where the business practices include planting trees to offset their product consumption, they use recyclable packaging whenever possible, purchase wind energy for the workshop, use natural cleaning agents, and just do whatever they can to keep their carbon footprint as small as possible. Mother Nature would approve of these accessories.

I had to share some of the favorite items from their site -- there's a lot more, but these were the darlings that caught my Jaunty eye. The Bird pendant -- of course! How could I not adore that, in all its Put-a-Bird-on-it/Portlandia glory. Their pendants come in bronze or silver, and I think the bronze really highlights the wood, especially on the Reuseable coffee cup pendant, which makes me crave a latte every time I see it. The separate Lock and Key pendants are precious -- ideal for best friends or sweethearts. The wood rings are so simple and beautiful; they would be gorgeous if worn stacked, with different thicknesses. The belt buckle makes an eco-elegant statement, and I could see both ladies and fellas wearing it with ease. And the Snap Trap-designed plug -- that's just Seattle/video game geek perfect. I know so many gamer friends who would adore that. All the pieces strike a nice balance of sweetness and edginess. It's accessories and adornments for both men and women.

Definitely check out Omerica Organic's beautiful site to browse their other pieces, and definitely check out more details about the items listed here: {1} Lock pendant in bronze/Vera wood, {2}Key pendant in bronze/Pink Ivory wood, {3} Reusable pendant in bronze/Pink Ivory wood, {4} Initials pendant in silver/Osage Orange wood, {5}Bird pendant in bronze/cross grain Bloodwood, {6} Cocobolo buckle, {7} Ring, average band width in Wild Olive wood, {8} Snap Trap, limited edition plug with Pink Ivory, Osage Orange and Blue Mahoe wood inlays and etched details.
I know, the world has seriously gone awry, and the Jaunty Bird is at the crossroads of this What-the-What typhoon. Call it Downton Abbey withdrawal, but I had a funny thought while driving not long ago, a TV title mashup that came to me in a flash: Downton Archer. Could anything be more insane? I think not. I'm not as avid a fan of the adult-funny cartoon series Archer as the Mister is -- he loves it. I've seen a few episodes and I'm more in love with the overall look of the show, with its intentional retro style. But when I got the TV title mashup in my brain, I couldn't shake it and realized it would be the perfect art project to put together, because Downton Abbey and Archer couldn't be more diametrically opposed if you put them into separate alternate universes. Behold... the birth of a new, goofy meme....

I was fortunate to have a week of hurry-up-and-wait projects, where I'd be busy for a couple of hours, then long stretches of waiting for feedback where I'd have to be behind the computer, babysitting email. I figure, if I'm stuck here, I may as well be inspired by something. I actually plugged "Downton Archer" into search engines to make sure I wasn't just reinventing someone else's meme. Thankfully, while the term has been used on Tumblr accounts, where people take screencaps of both shows and just swap quotes to create hilarious incongruity, the image itself hadn't yet popped up on the search-engine-internet-space-verse. So I set to work gathering some reference photos and screencaps to recreate that iconic family/household portrait that continues to be updated for every Downton season, and recreating it in Archer-style. Full disclosure -- I was all ready to redraw the character heads, but pesky work email came in, so I used screencaps from Archer for the heads to save on time, plus they made for handy color reference. I did, however, redraw all the Downton bodies by hand, scanned it in, and cleaned up/colorized in Photoshop. I was able to Dr. Frankenstein the heads onto the bodies and took color and shading cues from Archer's palette to make it jive with some rather pale/bland Downton costumes.

And so here it is -- glorious Downton Archer, putting the "funk" in dysfunctional family/household dynamics. This is the simpler version without the abbey in the background -- that version is sitting pretty on my Facebook page. Because, really, when it comes to goofy art projects, it all comes down to working it into your Facebook page banner, right? Ah, the joys of too much time on one's hands and way too much coffee.

Spring Cleaning typically means getting rid of things, clearing out the cobwebs and throwing out all the junk that's been piling up since last spring -- which I am doing -- but this year, I'm also trying to mix some addition to the seasonal subtraction. Yes, tis the season to update the portfolio on the design/illustration/photo website.

Updating a work-related website is akin to self-inflicted root canals. Yes, it's that painful. And it's not like we don't enjoy what we do or really love the final product, it's going through the projects over the last few months (sometimes years), editing down to just a few meaningful favorites and making it all somehow come together on a website. Thankfully, with the ease of blog templates, I gave my design/illustration/photography site, DeniseSakaki.com a relatively painless overhaul with a very simple layout last year. Learning from many previous years of custom websites that are too complex for words, the greatest lesson was: SIMPLIFY. Even if it seems too plain, sometimes that stark white background with the work just speaking for itself is enough. Because it should speak for itself. You don't want the frame to overshadow the picture it's holding up, so in a mode of simplification and a philosophical mindset of Spring Cleaning, basic is just dandy.

What's also dandy is follow-through with regular updates on this marvelous concept of a simplified portfolio website. I finally gathered together some favorite projects throughout last year and added them as new work on my website. AMAZING -- someone give me a gold star for beating the Procrastination Monster! My design style tends to be fairly clean and uncluttered, especially for brand designs. Logos are meant to be distilled, clear communications of a business or service, and the design should reflect that without a lot of fuss. And it should function well -- be easy to work with, size up or down with no hassle, and depending on the subject matter, nothing too fidgety or overdone. I enjoyed working on photographer Valentina Vitols' studio logo. Photographer logos are wonderful to work on -- so clean and simple, since often times the logo becomes the watermark on their photographs, so you don't want it distracting from the image. The work is literally refreshing! I also have fun with illustration embellishments when the situation calls for it. Being able to work on a full seasonal family of logo designs for Woodinville Wine Country's different yearly events was particularly fun and colorful. Consumer/retail-facing design is a lot of fun to work with -- it's literally like a trip to Disneyland, which I know sounds strange, describing a day of work like that. But I really do enjoy my work and updating the portfolio is less about LOOK AT MEEEEEE! and more about being incredibly grateful for the chance to work on such fun projects.

So pardon this Bird's blatant feather-preening, but here's to the things that we're lucky to be a part of, the things that put a literal spring in our step!

Has this Bird just lost her mind?!! If you've been like a lot of people with the power of Netflix and the Internets, you've been watching the series, House of Cards, which is the only way you'll truly appreciate this completely irreverent, nonsensical illustration. It's one of the best things not on television right now, but thanks to new media and entertainment outlets like video streaming, House of Cards is gaining a lot of fans.

Despite the rather giggle-worthy illustration of this real-life water tower in Gaffney, South Carolina, the series is a cleverly scathing, harsh and brilliant look at politics in America. Which is interesting, since it's a remake of a British miniseries of the same name from 1990, which spawned two additional miniseries (To Play the King and The Final Cut) -- all were fantastic, and it was good to see the original UK showrunners were behind this remake.

The story of a Machiavellian politician and his equally clever and calculated wife's journey up the rungs of government is a tale that will never tarnish with age -- it's Shakespearean in its MacBeth-ness, just with a lot more f-bombs and nudity, thanks to the unrated wilds of Netflix-land. It shows politics in a jaded but likely realistic light -- you push bills and legislature under the guise of ideals that you know others will support, regardless if you give a damn, because at the end of the day, it's all acts of leverage. Each win equals a sturdy rung to support your upward journey towards ultimate power. In the wake of a real-life contentious presidential race, there's a bipartisan satisfaction in watching a series that is so brutally honest -- not specifically about politicians, but the human condition itself. In the end, there are people who count and those that don't, and it is a painful struggle to come to terms with the notion of relevancy.

Kevin Spacey is Francis "Frank" Underwood (the original was Francis Urquhart, maybe too exotic a name for a South Carolinian representative), the Majority Whip who literally has most of Washington DC yoked under his net of influence. Like the original series, he breaks the Fourth Wall, speaking directly to the audience, which is helpful for providing context in the fast paced world of politicians who so rarely mean what they say. The feudal push-pull of getting things done in DC is fascinating -- it's like if Heathers and Mean Girls ran government, as it's all about making promises and granting favors in return for loyalty. And even if politics isn't your cup of tea, the series is also about the changing face of media and how it so easily sways the court of public opinion to bypass logic and truth. Even in its overly-dramatized format, as you see traditional forms of journalism wither in the harsh light of social media, the irony isn't lost that you're watching a television series through a high speed internet connection, under no traditional network or cable channel. Netflix surely scored a win with this remake, making us all thankful that $8 a month is worth more than the annoying wealth of crappy grade-z movies no one's heard of on their streaming library.

So, why the Peachoid? It was one of the earlier episodes that took Frank Underwood back to his hometown of Gaffney, SC, to deal with the unfortunate death of a teenager texting while driving, making fun of the peach-topped water tower, and Underwood dealing with "small ball" crap to keep his voters happy. It was a storyline that could only exist in this American remake, painting a wonderfully sad and funny portrait of small-town America, while watching Underwood deftly neutralize an emotionally-charged mob. The juxtaposition of the loss of a young life with a hilariously bulbous water tower perfectly sums up House of Cards as a series -- politics and ambition may be deadly-serious things, but the way one achieves power is about as irreverent and mind-boggling as the Peachoid.

I eagerly await the second season of House of Cards, and will be rewatching the original series, just to relive the magic and fill the time before season two comes streaming through our internets.
We're technically still in the dearth of winter, but my Jaunty gaze can't help but wander towards pastel hues of Spring. Mint is one of the smartest colors I can think of. It's downright clever. A touch of seafoam, a hint of emerald, just a kiss of cream -- the range of mint green has more variety than you'd think.

And it's not just destined for Easter candies, it's gorgeously wearable and has that perfect balance of sweetness and prep. Worn as large, all-over pieces like a blouse or jacket, it's good to pick a shade of mint that won't wash out your skin tone. I've tried on beautiful mint overcoats and they turned me into Casper the Unfashionable Ghost -- back on the hanger those went. I do have a rich minty-emerald pair of pants that I love-love-love, and wearing it on the bottom half helps keep the color from clashing with skin tone and still makes an outfit oh-so-smart.

And mint accessories are the cat's pajamas (a saying I love as much as the color mint) -- gorgeous in jewelry form, it keeps a handbag looking fresh, and lightens the look of a large tote, which can sometimes drag you down in darker colors. Makeup is also a nice non-committal way to freshen up a look. It's a beautiful color on nails, just consider putting down an undercoat of opaque white, so that the minty hue can really stand out. I admit, the whole inspiration of this Minty Mood was a pair of mint loafers with silver tips by Dolce Vita. I'm completely in love with those shoes and it's on my wish list for spring. With a little luck, I'll give myself the retail nudge and get them when a treat-yo-self-worthy moment arrives, but until then, I'll find my calm in a sea of minty green...

Won't you be my Sweater Sweetheart Valentine? I know, it's not Valentine's Day anymore, but now that the flowers have wilted, the chocolate has been eaten (and regretted), where does that lovin' feeling go? How about something that's calorie-free and isn't shedding petals every ten seconds. I used to love patterned sweaters as a kid. Big shapes and patterns incorporated into the knitted weave -- loved 'em. And it wasn't even the Dr. Huxtable/insane pattern sweaters, I liked the simple, childish shapes of big hearts, stars and flowers, and I'm happy to say my childhood love has finally come 'round again! I've been admiring all the cute retro-styled sweaters, as well as ones with metallic threaded patterns. The look might be a little nerdy, but despite the Valentine sweetness, we're still in winter weather. Instead of being buried in drab, dark wool coats, put a little love in your heart... or just wear it on a sweater.
Valentine's Day is upon us! This Bird isn't much of a stickler for the hearts n' flowers stuff -- truthfully, I have a hard time taking a greeting card-invented holiday all that seriously, but I do appreciate the sentiment. It's a good idea to recognize a special someone in our life. But what's with the red rose fever?? It's the one day of the year that the price of roses triples, and as beautiful as they are, there are so many other gorgeous flowers out there that still say "I love and appreciate you," all the same.

I had to show off one of my favorite photos I took on a recent visit to Maui. Orchids are incredible flowers, no? Difficult to grow in colder climates, true, but what a showstopper. I haven't had the best of luck keeping these delicate beauties alive, but I do love them for their color, exotic and fluttery shape, and frankly, they give any ol' rose a run for its money! So as you're considering heart-shaped boxes of chocolates and wondering if that bouquet of roses is worth the holiday upcharge, take a stroll outside the Valentine's Day box and consider a living plant, something a recipient can enjoy and care for, much like a beloved relationship.

The Birdy wishes you all a very happy Valentine's Day -- you don't need a sweetheart to feel loved and appreciated, and don't be shy about letting someone else know they are loved and appreciated.
We're taught from a young age that "no" is something rude or negative. But I'd like to suggest something totally crazy and say it's probably the best thing that you can ever do for yourself. This blog promises Jaunty things, which covers a thankfully wide spectrum, from personal style, to art, to what makes a person happy, but at the root of all those nebulous posts is that it's all about choice. We choose our happiness. We make a decision over what we feel is best for us. But sometimes those choices are driven by too many good intentions and we all know what road that leads us to.

I had several different conversations with friends recently and the topic of being overly accommodating to others came up. Everyone said the same thing: they wished they could say no, but they felt cornered into saying yes. And boom, before you know it, someone's committed to a day of screaming children at a popular toy store, someone's making five hundred cupcakes for a party of strangers -- insert your Doh! moment here. It's a false courtesy, and more times than not, we feel obligated to say yes than the dreaded no. Everyone does it and no one wants to admit how tiring it can be because it's not like you're shoveling coal. We should be happy to do this stuff, right? It's good to help babysit, or run an errand for someone, to promise to be at an event or do something for a function -- we do this every day and it's the good and right thing to do, as long as we're in the right frame of mind, with the energy to actually accomplish what was promised. But we're never fortunate to be in a situation where we can focus on a single thing at a time. There's always something else going on in our own lives, it makes for added noise, but the part of you that learned to not say no inevitably says yes, and then you wonder why you're falling asleep at the computerrr.... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz - snort - WHAAAAH??

I know for myself, I'm trying to cut back on things this year. Say no to assignments that aren't worth the trouble. Try not to work so much that you forget when it was the last time you had a full night's sleep. Those are the obvious ones to Just Say No to, but the hidden pitfalls are the things that you actually want to do. It sounds crazy, refusing something you genuinely want, but that is an ocean of agreements that inevitably drowns us. Too many promises that a single person can't possibly keep, or the temptation of fun is just too great and you wear yourself out and get yourself sick -- that was me over the holidays. Being sick on Christmas was a reminder of when to step away from everyone else's needs and just focus on your own, so you don't wind up with something stupid like walking pneumonia. Unacceptable. It's a strange and selfish-sounding resolution, to fully embrace the Power of No, but when you think about it, Yes is the gift of time we give to others, but No can be the gift we ultimately give to ourselves, if it means we're putting our health and sanity first. So let us celebrate the luxury of saying "No" more often -- it's surprisingly liberating.

You know what this Sunday is....The drama! The anguish! The human experience boiled down to crucial moments, displayed on the television. Yeah, that's right, Downton Abbey! I know there's that other big Super Sunday event, the one with dudes running around a big field, chasing after a oblong-shaped ball that's called a pigskin, yet oddly covered in cowhide (no one questions this...?). Given last week's OMG-DID-YOU-SEE-WHAT-HAPPENED Downton episode, this Sunday, along with the whole upcoming season is fraught with anticipatory, yet overly-civilized drama. And we eat it up with a bouillabaisse spoon.

Yes, Downton Abbey just a big costume soap opera, but it's oddly addictive -- even Mr. Magpie is hooked and he's the one who suggested we watch it. Oh, Snap! This doodle was brought to you by my bored mind, on the back of some work note scratchpaper. I was clearly distracted with a mashup of Downtown and Superbowl Sunday, plus this hilarious video, which I think is an appropriate thing to share:

So get ready to get Down-ton this Super Sunday. Remember which spoon goes with which course, get them elbows off the table as you're eating your spicy hot wings in the most civilized way possible, and let us all pray like Tebow for the upstairs/downstairs souls that lurk within the halls of Downton Abbey! 37-23-42 - HIKE!

Jack Frost isn't just nipping at our noses -- he's taking a vicious chomp right out of our faces, it's so cold. They say you shouldn't grocery shop while you're hungry, and I think something similar could be said when you're looking for blog inspiration -- don't write a post while you're freezing to death. That is, unless you're in the Mood for some warm, cozy winter wearables. Despite a rare day of sunny weather, it is positively Ice Age-cold out there, so I can't help but let my mind wander towards fur collars, coats with layers of quilted downy feathers or hearty wool and leather. I want to be swaddled in loops of infinity scarves made of soft cashmere. I picture my head fully nestled in a hat with ear flaps. Let me wear nothing but lazy, slouchy cowl-neck sweaters with my most comfortable jeans or yoga pants. Clearly, this Bird is in a chilly winter state of mind, so let's bundle up together, shall we?
I think everyone should take a break from winter, right in its worst, most gloomy of months -- which is RIGHT NOW. I know, it sounds strange to go on a break right after taking time off for the holidays, that is, unless you were like this Bird who didn't take a long holiday break, knowing I'd be flying off for a week to soak up some sun for a few days. It's all give and take, that pesky thing called Life. I was puttering away on projects with loose ends while others were fa-la-la-ing it up and decking halls, knowing that when that the gloom of January came, I had a bright spot to look forward to, aka, A Real Freakin' Vacation. There's something oddly satisfying about sticking it to grumpy Old Man Winter in the coldest of months, heading to somewhere warm and the complete opposite of what home is. But the Birdie shall return, fear not. There's a whole year ahead and it's good sense to energize right at the start of it so that you feel ready to tackle on whatever 2013's got in store!

A very Jaunty friend mentioned the concept of Project 365 to me late in 2009, to take at least one photo a day for a single year. Fast forward three years and this crazy Bird has been taking and posting a photo a day on Flickr, which you can see on my account. The photo doesn't have to be a masterpiece, it can be done using a camera phone, it was a well-intentioned project to make participants be more aware of their present surroundings and capture a moment of their day.

It's become a regular part of my behavior, making sure I took at least one photo -- which isn't difficult given what I do and the ease of a handy camera phone. The last year has moved so quickly -- the fastest yet, I feel. I didn't realize I'd even been doing this for three years until I stopped to take a look at my own album to see the date stamp from 2010.

And that's when I made the decision: let Project 365 end for the Magpie. It's not because I don't enjoy it, or that it's lost its meaning. I continue to take photos and visually document things I love, but I felt like the exercise of documenting each day was something that wasn't as necessary anymore. I just had to look at my first photos taken in 2010 to go right back to what I was thinking and where I was in life. It was a big transitional period -- I was deciding to become a freelance everything -- graphic design, photography, illustration, writing. I didn't know how to go about anything, every day felt daunting and I had a surplus of time that quickly became filled with doubt and fear. But filling that space with beauty and inspiration helped remind me that the world will keep spinning through the good and bad days, so don't forget to take a moment to capture some part of that day. I feel like that lesson has taken hold enough to where the exercise of documenting a day just becomes another to-do on my list, and that somewhat negates the purpose of Project 365.

I looked through the last three years of daily photos and could remember something very specific about that day, something that could never have been completely captured in words. I can recall why each image was chosen and what I was doing, whether it was flying off on a trip or living in my own little world that day. There were bad days and good ones, even if the image didn't betray all the intimate details. It's a unique way to journal one's life by sharing everything, but keeping many things private. A picture tells a thousand words, and it will mean different things to people, so it tells its own story. I will still post images on the account periodically, it just won't be daily. It's just as meaningful to share one image that is significant, as it is to post hundreds that make up a whole year. I don't know if anyone else continues with Project 365, but I cheer you on if you're keeping up with it. I may return to it again, if the time feels right, but for now, I'm comfortable with taking 2013 one day at a time, photo or not.

Whew, let me catch my breath for a moment... Can you believe we've entered into another year? A fresh, shiny, new-car-smelling 2013 is upon us. And we're faced with an endless supply of options, adventures, decisions and promises for the next three-sixty-five and change.

It's daunting to consider all these possibilities ahead, but I have one item in particular that I had the pleasure of admiring over the holidays that I think is both fitting and fetching for a year ready to take flight. I was very lucky to meet boutique owner, style influencer, and author, Cameron Silver, at an event at Tiffany and Co. in December, presenting his new book, Decades: A Century of Fashion. He's the owner of a gorgeous boutique in Los Angeles, also called Decades, which speaks to his expertise and appreciation for mixing classic with modern. Vintage clothing paired with contemporary jewelry and accessories, ways to bring time periods together and reinvent new looks. Just because it's a new year doesn't mean we have to only look ahead -- sometimes a trip back in time will inspire where we will move forward.

Cameron Silver's book is an outstanding collection of fashion photography and portraits. I misspent many productive workdays dreamily paging through the different eras and I was very much in love with the 20s and 30s pieces. Periods where photography wasn't as prevalent as now are particularly stunning because the photos are a rare, beautiful look at a time that seems both far away but very familiar. We can recognize dress styles and shapes, details and accessories that we still see today, and that speaks to the timelessness of true style.

As you go through the the chronology of photographs, you start to see trends, like Hollywood stars becoming stylemakers, the evolution of silhouettes from pinched-in waists and full skirts, to more simplified, ultra-modern lines that almost erase gender. The book touches on the Reign of the Supermodel, hip-hop/street style -- many recent looks and trends that I definitely remember. And then it softly lands on present-day style, which is that many of the looks we find compelling now are ones that incorporate trends spanning those decades. Fashion is a form of history, one that we see every day and may not take the time to notice, but in the context of a book that views our wardrobe through a historic lens, an item that simply drapes on a hanger gains new relevance. So as we enter a new year, consider Decades a guide book to inspire for how we wish to present ourselves, moving forward.

Jaunty Fine Print: Photos from Cameron Silver's book, Decades: A Century of Fashion

A very Jaunty HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL! With any luck, you've made merry, said farewell to 2012 in style, and ready to face 2013 energized... and only slightly hung over. Wooho!!! (more aspirin, please)

I wanted to share this year's holiday card design, which I hope you like. The idea came to me one day, towards the end of summer, funny enough. I thought of snow globes and how they're like the captured dreams of places and things we all wish for. And they're always full of snow, hence the name -- but what do snowmen gaze at when looking at a snow globe? Surely, they must dream of tropical beaches and sunny skies, something that seems like a lofty, but I daresay not impossible goal.

Because nothing should be impossible, not during the beginning of a year when we are given the luxury of Dreaming Big! For generous souls who spread kindness to strangers. For the one time of year where children can believe in a little magic, and we're reminded of what that wonderful feeling was like. For wishes and dreams we can hope to fulfill in the new year.

Don't let that holiday goodwill fade away when the chill of January arrives -- keep that generous spirit warming your heart. And continue to be inspired, energized and excited with the Jaunty world around you to power you into this bright, shiny new year ahead!
Wishing everyone a very Happy Holidays with this Jaunty sparkly post! This Bird is in full Christmas mode, listening to Burl Ives' Holly Jolly Christmas, along with my whole playlist of seasonal music that as a rule, I only bust out as of December 1st. Take that, retailers who are decking the halls in October!

This year, I made it a point to not go completely off the rails for the holidays, taking on too many projects and not getting a chance to really enjoy the season. I wasn't burning the midnight oil on workstuff, I took time to visit with friends and see people I hadn't seen in forever. You get to the point where the holidays aren't about stuff wrapped in boxes and tied with bows, you want the gift of time, to reconnect and let the people in your life know how much they mean to you, whether it's over coffee, dinner or a cocktail or three. Martinis are full of love, don't you know?

And a new tradition of breaking tradition continued into this year -- last year I was so busy, I didn't have time to put up a tree. It broke my heart a little, as I always felt like it wasn't Christmas without a tree, but I was exhausted. The holidays were still plenty special and it was yet another reminder that the holidays are a state of mind. I didn't decorate a tree again this year. I knew if I didn't have that thing up by the first week of December, it wasn't going to happen. But I was going to be okay with that because I didn't need one tree, I had all the trees of Seattle and her surrounding cities. I made it a point to visit and admire as many decorated trees around the area as possible. The multiple trees of Chateau Ste. Michelle in Woodinville, downtown Bellevue's many trees in all their main squares, Kirkland's brightly-lit (and carol-singing) tree along the waterfront, Seattle's many trees in Westlake Center and Pike Place Market, even a beautifully chic Tiffany and Co tree decorated in just what Eartha Kitt purred about in Santa Baby.

And along the way of admiring trees, I didn't skimp on the extras -- the madness of the nightly marching band of Snowflake Lane, gingerbread villages in Seattle and Bellevue, holiday shopping through Pike Market's specialty shops, even a peppermint mocha with whipped cream and sprinkles. I'm redefining what Christmas means to me as an adult, which is less things, more experiences and immersing oneself in the sights, smells and yummy flavors of this festive time of year. We'll regret all those Chia Pets, Snuggies and Pajama Jeans six months from now, but enjoying a decorated town square on a chilly winter night will never lose its luster, at least not in my eyes.

And so this is my Christmas post -- it's what the holiday means to me, along with taking time when I have it. So in honor of that promise to myself, I'll leave this up from now until the new year. Because even a blogger needs a winter holiday, right? But fear not, the Magpie is all ready to return bright-eyed for 2013. Until then, please take the time to spend with your loved ones. The holidays are the one time of year where it feels a little easier to tell someone they're important to you, that you love them, and how thankful you are to have them in your life. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

Well? Did you survive the opening bell of the holiday season and strongarm some random stranger for that Tickle Me Elmo doll on Black Friday? Or did you avoid the shopping rush altogether and are starting to get a case of the cold sweats while looking at your gift list? Fear not! The Magpie is here to not only help you, but help you help the whole country, just by the simple look at a label. I'm talking about the label-consciousness that doesn't say whether or not something says Gucci or Louis Vuitton, it's the best possible name brand you can find: Made in the USA.

Don't roll your eyes thinking everyone's going to be stuck with Pyrex measuring cups (yes, it's an American company!). There are A LOT of domestic-made/manufactured products out there, and it's as easy as checking the labels. Granted, you can't get everything made in the US, but you can at least make it a point to be selective based on where an item is made, and make the choice to buy local. Even if it's a little shop that sells imported perfumes, that shopowner will be glad you made the purchase there, versus a big-box department store. With every dollar you spend for a local/American-made item, it's a way of investing in our own economy, our people, and a future aimed at growth.

It's so easy to find thoughtful and meaningful gifts that follow the Made in the USA/Shop Local ideal -- here are some tips and ideas:

Avoid the malls, stick to small neighborhood boutiques; there are always one-of-a-kind finds and sometimes if there's something you really want, the shop owner may be willing to work a deal.

You can type in "Made in the USA" or "Made in America" on large shopping websites like Amazon, and they have a wide selection of everything from home/kitchen goods to beauty products.

Buy gift cards from local restaurants or shops to give as gifts -- recipients can enjoy a favorite dish or be introduced to a new shop.
Look for craft shows, which are popular leading up to the holidays. It's not all lace doilies and creepy knitted dolls, you can find crowd-pleasing gifts like artisan foods, handmade soaps and candles and jewelry.

Shop online for handmade crafts at Etsy.com - you can narrow your search by local artists and find a ton of unique, beautiful gifts for others (or yourself). Make sure to shop and order early, since a lot of the items are on short supply or might need to be made.

Jaunty Fine Print: Graphic by Denise Sakaki, statistic from ABC News series Made in America

The Magpie was very honored to meet artist Nikki McClure at the recent BAM Ignite event at the Bellevue Arts Museum. She has a stunning exhibit, Nikki McClure: Cutting Her Own Path, on display until February 3 of next year at The Bellevue Arts Musuem, which I highly recommend going to see, if you live in the area. Chances are you've probably seen her incredible cut paper illustration on book and album covers, and my personal favorite, on children's books, which I think showcases her work marvelously. The dramatic contrast of the cut black paper against white or colored backgrounds lend themselves perfectly for children's books, and her work has such a narrative storytelling aspect.

If you see Nikki McClure's exhibit, you get a chance to see original work and by getting up close, you can see every slice that renders a single piece of paper into a delicate lattice portrait. Admiring that level of handcraft and skill makes me think of jade or bone sculptures, where intricate carvings are made from a single piece of material. And she has a display of her sketchbooks and watercolors, along with a box of used Xacto blades to get a sense of her process and what it takes to inspire and create such beautiful pieces. Also -- put it on your calendar, she's doing a reading at Bellevue Arts Museum on December 8th, from 1-1:30pm! Visit the museum's event page for more details.

If you don't live in the area, fear not! Her books are my Fancy recommendation for the holidays. For the art collector and appreciator, {4} Collect Raindrops is a collection of McClure's work. There are fun books like {3} Things to Make and Do, to inspire the artist in everyone with simple projects. For the family she has several children's books like {2} Mama, Is It Summer Yet, {1} All In a Day, or for the mom to-be, {5} The First 1000 Days. I love giving her books to friends with children because there is always an emphasis on being close with nature and the whole food movement. It introduces simple, healthy habits to children like the benefits of gardening, going to a farmers market and just being hands-on with what goes on their plate. She's also done the cover art for grown-up books like Manifestos on the Future of Food and Seed, a collection of essays about the sustainable food movement.

Art that speaks to body and soul, this is something this Bird can flap her wings about. The Birdy's final month-long ode to the cancelled-but-not-forgotten series Firefly is something that brings nerd-ness and style together in a single post. The look of Firefly was about as close to Steampunk as network television was going to get. It was somewhat ahead of its time, since the series came out ten years ago, prior to the level of recognition this Jules Verne-inspired costume obsession has today. Now, Steampunk has the cultural familiarity that brings to mind a quote from Triumph the Insult Dog, upon observing a fan's homemade costume: "Which of these buttons do I press to call your mom to pick you up?"

Jokes aside, it is a striking look that combines a bit of 1800s Jauntiness with a Western edge to rough it up a bit. While none of us are living in a sci-fi/western universe, having adventures on a spaceship, I found some lovely wearables that have the high drama with the fashion pedigree to match.

As in all style common sense rules -- don't wear all this at once or you really will look like a cos-play refugee begging to have your lunch money stolen. But the pieces on their own are beautiful with a tough edge, surely putting you in a stylishly fantastical Mood: {1} Trouve faux leather panel leggings, {2} Black and bronze buckled half boots by Laurence Dacade, {3} MCQ razor blade brass and leather cuff by Alexander McQueen, {4} Rockstud driving gloves by Valentino, {5} Old and New pocket watch necklace from ModCloth, {6} Ravel Hope leather boot with double buckle detail, {7} Washed leather fingerless gloves by Vince Camuto, {8} Wool felt coat with leather lapels by Salvatore Ferragamo, {9} Tailored cotton riding jacket in camel by Burberry, {10} Multistrap leather cuff bracelet by Leatherock
More Firefly Tenth Anniversary nerdery is afoot! I said I'd be doing a whole gorram month of Firefly-themed posts, and I meant it! Consider it a long overdue ode to the best damn sci-fi/western series ever (because there were so many before it...?), and simply because it's so close to the Magpie's heart. And I didn't have a blog in 2002. Ten years ago, the show would have been hitting a middle-point of its 14 episode run, vying for viewers during a month already fraught with holiday breaks, but still celebrating its survival of the initial Octagon of September network premieres. Much like settlers on a lonely plain, the show wouldn't survive the winter of December 2002, with its last episodes going unaired, but thankfully available on DVD, where it would see its full glory realized, post-mortem.

One of the main reasons why Firefly's cult status thrives after a decade is its writing. It was funny and with the typical Joss Whedon quirkiness, but it could turn suddenly and become sinister. And then before you know it, you're a little misty eyed because some personal nerve was touched. It was always about people and the need for camaraderie, set against the bleak, cold expanse of space. But space could be a comfort as well, a welcome escape, much like the open, unexplored plains of a young America. So, in that sense, Westerns and Sci-Fi aren't such strange bedfellows. And we'll just ignore that Cowboys and Aliens movie ever existed, shall we...?

I collected my favorite quotes from one of my favorite Big Damn Hero, Capt. Mal Reynolds, which I think perfectly captures the mix of humor and heart behind Firefly. Don't ask why, but I decided to illustrate him as a little LEGO figure, because Big Damn Hero translated perfectly to Little Damn Piece of Plastic. So let us give thanks to our favorite Big Damn Heroes, and the fact that Firefly continues to Keep on Flying in the hearts of fans, even after ten years.
