Sivakumar Thyagarajan works in the Cloud Application Foundation group at Oracle India. He leads the Connector Specification (JSR-322 ) in the Java EE 7 Platform.

He has led the development of Contexts and Dependency Injection(CDI), Connectors and JMS integration modules in Project GlassFish, Sun Java System Application Server, and the J2EE SDK. He has been involved with the GlassFish project ( http://www.glassfish.org) since inception, and has worked extensively on Java EE based distributed enterprise application design and development. Nigel Deakin is the Specification Lead for JSR 343, Java Message Service 2.0. He is a Principal Member of Technical Staff at Oracle. In addition to his responsibilities for leading the next versions of the JMS specification, he is a member of Oracle's JMS development team, working on Open Message Queue and the GlassFish application server. Prior to joining Oracle, Nigel worked for Sun Microsystems, SeeBeyond, SpiritSoft, and GemStone Systems on a variety of JMS and Java EE products. Nigel has spoken recently at JavaOne in San Francisco, USA, and at Devoxx in Antwerp, Belgium. He is based in Cambridge, UK.

Dr. Santiago Pericas-Geertsen is a Principal Member of Technical Staff in the Sun Glassfish organization at Oracle. He is an architect and technical lead in the Avatar project at Oracle. Within the JCP program, Santiago is a Spec Lead for JSR 339: JAX-RS 2.0 The Java API for RESTful Web Services. While at Sun Microsystems, Santiago was a tech lead for the Glassfish Mobility Platform, a developer and lead in the Fast Web Services project and a participant, and editor, in World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) initiatives including the XML Binary Characterization working group (WG) and the W3C Efficient XML Interchange WG. In addition, Santiago was a Project Management Committee (PMC) member at the Apache Software Foundation representing the Xalan/XSLTC project, and one of the original Sun Microsystems developers of XSLTC, the compiling version of the Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations now part of the JDK.

Anthony Lai is a principal member of the Oracle technical staff and a developer in the J2EE Connector Architecture area of Oracle Application Server Containers of J2EE. Anthony is also a member of the expert committee for the J2EE Connector Architecture 1.5 specification (JSR 112) and the specification lead for JSR 236 Concurrency Utilities for Java EE.

I think requiring signing applets is the right path. It's a little harder to developers? It's their (well, our) job to understand and handle this kind of thing, not the users'.

I have one question, though:

Currently, when we sign an applet, it can run outside the sandbox (that means, it could read and/or write to any file the current user has access to, run native commands with Runtime.exec(), etc.). I think it asks for permission, but I think it's almost a given that now, when you accept to run a signed applet, you're authorising it to run outside the sandbox (otherwise, there would be little incentive to sign it in the first place) and do whatever it wants to your computer.

If all applets now will require signing and user approval to run, how can the user differentiate a sandboxed applet from a run-as-admin (windows users almost always are admin) applet?

Signing in the past was only done for apps that were going to request elevated permissions. Today all apps need to be signed, but signing doesn't equated to elevated permissions. The user gets different informational prompts for sandboxed vs. privileged apps, and the app developer is is control of whether the app runs inside the sandbox (for now).

Terrence Barr is a Senior Technologist and Principal Product Manager for Oracle’s small embedded Java Products. He has a broad development and architectural experience on mobile and embedded systems and platforms including industrial control systems, multiprocessor architectures, implementation and optimization of virtual machines, byte code hardware acceleration, advanced client-side and mobile applications, scalable client-server architectures, and more. Lately, he has been driving key aspects of the embedded Java strategy and product roadmap and is responsible for one of Oracle’s embedded Java product lines. He participates in industry organizations and standards bodies, have authored or co-authored a number of papers in the U.S. and Europe, and speak frequently at events around the world.

Chris Vignola works for the IBM AIM Software organization and is the lead architect for WebSphere Systems Management. He is also the spec lead for JSR 352 Batch Applications for the Java Platform. He was formerly the WebSphere Batch Technology Chief Architect. He has over 28 years industry experience in architecture and development of software systems, including WebSphere Extended Deployment, WebSphere Application Server, and the MVS operating system. Chris lead architecture and design for the operational facilities of MVS Sysplex, was a charter member of the WebSphere Application Server for z/OS team, specializing in EJB container and systems management components, and more recently lead the WebSphere Compute Grid development team.

Chris speaks English and Spanish fluently, lives in NY state, and enjoys his family, skiing, hiking, and fishing when not fully immersed in delivering industry-changing technology.

Mark Heckler is an Oracle ACS Java/Middleware/Core Tech Engineer with development experience in numerous environments. He has worked for and with key players in the manufacturing, emerging markets, retail, medical, telecom, and financial industries to develop and deliver critical capabilities on time and on budget. Currently, he works primarily with large government customers using Java throughout the stack and across the enterprise. He also participates in open-source development at every opportunity, being a JFXtras project committer and developer of DialogFX, MonologFX, and various other projects. When Mark isn't working with Java, he enjoys writing about his experiences at the Java Jungle website (https://blogs.oracle.com/javajungle/).

Mark lives with his very understanding wife, three kids, and dog in the St. Louis, MO area.

Ashwin Rao is Group Product Manager for NetBeans with the Oracle Developer Tools organization, based in Melbourne. Rao began his career 15 years ago as a developer in the defense industry, working on developing real-time software for command and control systems. He was at Sun prior to its 2010 acquisition by Oracle. Before that, Rao held various technical positions at Baan, a Netherlands-based ERP software provider, including developer / team lead on the R&D team, working on next-generation ERP platform and tools. He has presented at a number of conferences, including JavaOne and other developer-related events.

Kirk Pepperdine has been working in high performance and distributed computing for nearly 20 years. His focus has primarily been on performance, working on architecting, developing, and tuning applications running on Cray and other high performance computing platforms.

Kirk now specialises in Java, where he works in all aspects of performance and tuning in each phase of a project life cycle. Author, speaker, consultant, Kirk was recognised as a Java Champion in 2006 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Java community. Kirk holds a diploma in Biochemistry from Algonquin College and a BA in Math from Carleton University.

Emmanuel Bernard is data platform architect at JBoss by Red Hat and member of the Hibernate team. Emmanuel has lead the JPA implementation of Hibernate. Stephen Colebourne is a Java Champion and JavaOne Rock Star speaker. He has been working with Java since version 1.0 and contributing to open source software since 2000. He has made major contributions to Apache Commons and created the Joda open source projects including Joda-Time. He blogs on Java topics and is a frequent conference speaker, including Devoxx and JavaOne. He is currently co-spec lead on JSR-310 and a contributor to discussions on language change such as Project Coin and Lambda.

Nurturing developer communities is a personal passion, and Bruno worked actively with Java, NetBeans, Open Solaris, OFBiz, and many other open source communities. As founder and coordinator of SouJava (The Java Users Society), one of the world's largest Java User Groups, Bruno leaded the expansion of the Java movement in Brazil. Founder of the Worldwide Java User Groups Community, Bruno helped the creation and organization of hundreds of JUGs worldwide. A Java Developer since the early days, Bruno participated in some of the largest Java projects in Brazil.

Fabiane Nardon is a computer scientist who is passionate about creating software that will positively change the world we live in. She was the architect of the Brazilian Healthcare Information System, considered the largest JavaEE application in the world and winner of the 2005 Duke's Choice Award. She leaded several communities, including the JavaTools Community at java.net, where 800+ open source projects were born. She is a frequent speaker at conferences in Brazil and abroad, including JavaOne, OSCON, Jfokus, JustJava and more. She’s also the author of several technical articles and member of the program committee of several conferences as JavaOne, OSCON, TDC. She was chosen a Java Champion by Sun Microsystems as a recognition of her contribution to the Java ecosystem. Currently, she works as a tools expert at ToolsCloud and in companies she co-founded, where she is helping to shape new disruptive Internet based services.

Pete Muir is leading the CDI 1.1 specification, and work on JBoss Developer Framework, a set of tutorials and examples for all JBoss users. Previously, Pete has worked on Infinispan and I led the Seam and Weld projects, and is a founder of the Arquillian project. Pete has worked on a number of specifications including JSF 2.0, AtInject and Java EE 7. Pete is a regular speaker at JUGs and conferences such as JavaOne, Devoxx, JAX, JavaBlend, JSFDays, JBoss World, Red Hat Developer Day and JUDCon.

Pete is currently employed by Red Hat Inc. working on JBoss open source projects. Before working for Red Hat, Pete used and contributed to Seam whilst working at a UK based staffing agency as IT Development Manager.

Patrick Curran is Chair of the Java Community Process organization. In this role he oversees the activities of the JCP's Program Management Office including evolving the process and the organization, managing its membership, guiding specification leads and experts through the process, chairing Executive Committee meetings, and managing theJCP.org web site.

Patrick has worked in the software industry for more than 25 years, and at Sun and then Oracle for 20 years. He has a long-standing record in conformance testing, and before joining the JCP he led the Java Conformance Engineering team in Sun's Client Software Group. He was also chair of Sun's Conformance Council, which was responsible for defining Sun's policies and strategies around Java conformance and compatibility.

Patrick has participated actively in several consortia and communities including theW3C (as a member of the Quality Assurance Working Group and co-chair of the Quality Assurance Interest Group), andOASIS (as co-chair of the Test Assertions Guidelines Technical Committee). Patrick's blog ishere

Heather VanCura manages the JCP Program Office and is responsible for the day-to-day nurturing, support, and leadership of the community. She oversees the JCP.org web site, JSR management and posting, community building, events, marketing, communications, and growth of the membership through new members and renewals. Heather has a front row seat for studying trends within the community and recommending changes. Several changes to the program in recent years have included enabling broader participation, increased transparency and agility in JSR development.

When Heather joined the PMO staff in a community building marketing manager role for the JCP program, she was responsible for establishing the JCP brand logo programs, the JCP.org site, and engaging the community in online surveys and usability studies. She also developed marketing reward programs, campaigns, sponsorships, and events for the JCP program, including the community gathering at the annual JavaOne Conference.

Before arriving at the JCP community in 2000, Heather worked with various technology companies. Heather enjoys speaking at conferences, such as Devoxx, Java Zone, and the JavaOne Conferences. She maintains the JCP Blog, Twitter feed (@jcp_org) and Facebook page. Heather resides in the San Francisco Bay Area, California USA.

Mark Reinhold is Chief Architect of the Java Platform Group at Oracle, where he works on the Java Platform, Standard Edition, and OpenJDK. His past contributions to the platform include character-stream readers and writers, reference objects, shutdown hooks, the NIO high-performance I/O APIs, library generification, and service loaders. Mark was the lead engineer for the 1.2 and 5.0 releases and the specification lead for Java SE 6. He is currently leading the Jigsaw and JDK 7 Projects in the OpenJDK Community. Mark holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In this interview he discusses the future of Java Platform with regards to Jigsaw, Lambda, and Nashorn components as well as the OpenJDK community.

Stephan Janssen is a serial entrepreneur that has founded several successful organizations such as the Belgian Java User Group (BeJUG) in 1996, JCS Int. in 1998, JavaPolis in 2002 and now Parleys.com in 2006. He has been using Java since its early releases in 1995 with experience of developing and implementing real world Java solutions in the finance and manufacturing industries. Today Stephan is the CTO of the Java Competence Center at RealDolmen. He was selected by BEA Systems as the first European (independent) BEA Technical Director. He has also been recognized by the Server Side as one of the 54 Who is Who in Enterprise Java 2004. Sun has recognized in 2005 his efforts for the Java Community and has engaged him in the Java Champion project. He has spoken at numerous Java and JUG conferences around the world.
