Tonight on The Jazz Show with Chris, we will be dedicating this episode to nothin' but those down and dirty blues and black history month. This episode is jam packed with some great tunes for you all and it is sure to make you want more of them blues.

On a side note, sorry i've been away for a while. It's been insane lately and I just needed a short break to catch my breath. We'll try to not let it happen again.

Tonight on The Jazz Show with Chris, we will be hosting a battle royale of some of the greatest big bands that have been created. It's going to be a fight where both teams come out swingin' and may the best band win.

On the line-up, we have a taste of the the old school:

We also have a taste of the new school:
Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band

we will talk briefly about each group and mostly let each band speak for themselves.

Be sure to listen in. This week we will be talking about the Drummer. If the bassist is the heartbeat, the pianist is the brain, the soloists are the voice, then the drummer is the legs that inspire the soloist to move along or relax.
We will be talking about four great drummers spanning the era from early jazz to the new kids. Warren "Baby" Dodds, Kenny Clarke, the late great Max Roach, Elvin Jones, and we will try to get a word or two from some local drummers. This will give you the opportunity to give you some sense of what it is to really be a jazz drummer and what kind of skill these great musicians have.

We will also be giving away tickets to the 1940s Radio Hour featuring the Pacific Jazz Ensemble.

So Check it out! It will be a great show!

So on last thursday's show I was totally wrong in making an educated guess about where Miss Ella Fitzgerald came from. So here's the facts:

In January 1935 Ella won the chance to perform for a week with the Tiny Bradshaw band at the Harlem Opera House. Ella met drummer and bandleader Chick Webb here for the first time. Webb had already hired male singer Charlie Linton to work with the band, and was, The New York Times later wrote, "reluctant to sign her....because she was gawky and unkempt, a diamond in the rough."[4] Webb offered Ella the opportunity to test with his band when they played a dance at Yale University. Despite the rough crowd, Ella was a great success, and Webb hired her to travel with the band for US$12.50 a week.
