1. whenever i'm commuting (and i don't happen to be asleep at the time, which is rare), i imagine passing vehicles as no bigger than my hand. it's kinda like that perspective trick of blotting out the sun with your thumb. then i imagine picking cars up and slamming them into each other, or throwing them (bloody people and all) into a mass of pedestrians. very therapeutic.

2. i can't play a song on the guitar if i'd already played it recently. so if anyone requests anything, that's fine, but if another wants to hear it again, so sorry. i call it 'videokeng walang ulitan'.

3. at least one day out of every week, nobody knows where i am or what i'm doing.

4. i'm always early. if there's someone i have to meet somewhere or there's an event i have to attend, i will normally be there at least an hour or two early, scouting the area and watching the people. in unfamiliar locations, that would mean three hours' headtime, or more. the only exception: work.

5. i know all the words to almost 100% of songs i like, and about 85% of songs i'm familiar with. i also can tell you who sang which particular song, about 7 times out of 10.

6. i love walking; it really clears my head. the farthest i've walked is home from roxas blvd (where the heritage hotel is), one night when it was very faintly drizzling. btw, i live in cavite, so it's a hell of a long walk.

what has made me very, very excited about this video is that the style of play very much coincides with how i've tried to play since learning the guitar about 12 or 13 years ago. most of the time, i don't have anyone to jam with, and so i resorted to solo arrangements. if i had only learned earlier that arranging for solo guitar could be taken to this extreme...

just recently i acquired this great software called Magic Workstation (you can find and download the software at the MWS website). what it does is provide an organizable inventory and non-automatic play environment for different collectible card games; you only have to provide the master card inventory and scanned card pics for the ccg game you want.

so anyway, i loaded up a magic: the gathering (hereafter termed as mtg) inventory, and started deckbuilding. it's a piece of mtg heaven, because now i don't have to worry about not having cards for my crazy deck ideas. true, i have a magic:online account, but MTGO doesn't cover cards from very old blocks, and my card inventory there is very small (because you STILL have to buy virtual cards from the store or from online sellers, and that's a hassle).

if you like playing with cardboard, there's also this option where you can print proxy cards (9 to a page). Alpha Black Lotus, here i come for yo skinny ass!

anyone want a copy? buzz me up, and prepare a blank dvd. the software itself is just 10mb and the mtg master base is less than 1mb, but the card pics are a whopping 2gb.

for my mtg-playing readers (do i even STILL have readers?), there's this legacy (that's type 1.5 for you oldies) deck that's now out, and due to lifting of some rules errata, is dangerously close to breaking the format entirely. it's called Hulk Flash, and is capable of performing turn-1 or turn-0 kills with regular consistency.

jamming on wednesday with my cousin, his girlfriend, and two other friends of theirs. i haven't met the bassist, but dj (the lead guitarist) is probably the best shredder i've met. he won an online competition sometime ago, where contestants have to submit an original instrumental rock composition. he introduced me to dream theater and liquid tension experiment (both are bands with john petrucci and mike portnoy in it), and i am so loving these 2.

anyway, we've tossed ideas back and forth about what direction the music should take, and so far the consensus has been to explore some styles and then figure out what we really want. we suggested one song each, and then play all those with a little modification to try and make them lean toward a particular sound. from what i've seen, i think the initial direction would tend more towards an alt-jazzy-blues-rock type mutant.

so here's what we're going to be practicing for wednesday just for kicks, and it is one weird fuck of a playlist:

i'm excited, though. i've seen janet (my cousin's gf) perform on a videoke once, and she has a nice high, adaptable voice. dj, the lead guitarist, is a competitive shredder, but doesn't sacrifice melody for speed. he's also great at modding styles; dj used to work for a music studio, recording songs for a company that makes videoke music with real-life instruments instead of midi compositions. my cousin erick's on the drums; i'm on rhythm.

so after a couple of misfire attempts, we finally got to see imago and sandwich live, at 70's bistro. jae, jam and i met at gateway for some dinner first. leks came later. funny thing, for a very huge imago fanboy, this would be ze first time i would see them perform live. my gut-butterflies were moving pretty nicely at this point.

imago performed first. set was mostly from blush, and their covers of spoliarium and ewan. tim was out sick, so raimund marasigan filled in on guitars and/or keyboards. i only then got to appreciate raims's skill; he practically bore a large brunt of the music on his shoulders, and some low-key electronica effects added a spiffy touch to imago's songs. maps and aia on short shorts! i could die now.

sandwich came next. i really hate to admit it, but from a musical standpoint, i enjoyed their performance better. raimund was not in hyper performance mode that night, but his electronica is awesome. they also put in some great covers from the cure, shifting back and forth between the covers and butterfly carnival and two trick pony. also notable was mong's long guitar solo for masilungan, which was simple enough but still fun to listen to.

i just noticed dacs's sidebar, featuring the millennium development goals videos in youtube. working for a public sector ngo, i of course have a deep awareness and immersion in the mdg's. it's nice to see people, especially the young ones, being still concerned about the world's progress, and still putting forth a stand (small though it may be) to achieve the world's goals.

an aside: i REALLY hope the convention has its share of cute zamboangeñas.

i am now in love with gimp.

i just discovered gimp's mathmap plugin while browsing for web dreck. basically what it does is alter the source image based on mathematical formulas you put in the expression box. think of it as putting an image on a cartesian plane, then applying transformations based on some function.

to illustrate: here is a 240 x 240 image of me holding up a cd (taken using a web cam). i desaturated the pic and fiddled around with the cd's color, also cropping out the middle in preparation for transparency. here it is, before the magic:

i then fired up mathmap and used a droste transformation (basically what it does is "unroll" the picture using a logarithmic function and then retwist it using a natural exponent). i now have this:

i enhanced the cd's leading edge to emphasize the spiral transformation. notice that the pic is unbroken throughout the entire spiral; if i had used a high-res image and used more time to manipulate stuff, i could have gotten an image that would be very trippy.

i did say i was now in love with gimp, right?

i was tasked to create an mtv for a convention. that means i'd also have to work on a musical score; luckily, we already have a confederation anthem, so all that i need to do is to rework it so that it becomes heavier and more anthemic.

with that in mind, i started close work on bands with grand, anthemic songs. not surprisingly, a week on those songs put me in a state of high euphoria. the goosebumps! the tears! i was ready to take on the world! and conquer it! and use ALL CAPS ON ANYTHING! AND LOTS OF EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!!!!!

and as far as anthems go, there are very few that evoke more from the human heart than u2's where the streets have no name.

"Where the Streets Have No Name" is more like the U2 of old than any of the other songs on the LP, because it's a sketch - I was just trying to sketch a location, maybe a spiritual location, maybe a romantic location.
I was trying to sketch a feeling. I often feel very claustrophobic in a city, a feeling of wanting to break out of that city and a feeling of wanting to go somewhere where the values of the city and the values of our society don't hold you down.
An interesting story that someone told me once is that in Belfast, by what street someone lives on you can tell not only their religion but tell how much money they're making - literally by which side of the road they live on, because the further up the hill the more expensive the houses become.

pathfinder vs. 300: a short review

because i don't like to add another glowing review of 300 to the blog world when there's so much of it already, i will then offer a comparison of 300 to another similar movie: pathfinder.

in 300 it has been said by some that real men talk only in fragments. i think pathfinder takes this advice pretty much to the extreme: the show runs pretty close to 2 hours, yet there are a lot of times when nobody has any dialogue for 20 freaking minutes at a time. really. the first line of script comes about 5-8 minutes into the movie, which is pretty late; for the rest of the film, dialogue occurs in short bursts, with a crapload of bland, generic war muzak in between. if you close your eyes, you'd think you were just listening to a soundtrack cd. pathfinder taught me that REAL, REAL men don't talk. at all.

another thing: nobody ever told me viking-speak sounds suspiciously like thinly disguised english.

on one film zack snyder shows us a fight scene (the first time the phalanx goes in action in 300) so powerful and riveting that it drove me to tears (and there are only a few films that can do that, but i won't embarass myself further by telling you which ones -- good thing i saw 300 alone the first time). on the other we have a film that has a total lack of emotional involvement with the viewer; during the entire film i was thinking, "holy hell, why is brendan fraser in a battle movie?"

pathfinder's american indian chick is better than the 300's chick (leonidas's wife). still not much shakes, though.

my favorite part of 300: the first confrontation between leonidas and xerxes (the "you must be xerxes" scene). if i wasn't too caught up with the greatness of the movie, i would have screamed with laughter at seeing xerxes. i fully expected the exchange to go as follows:

leonidas: "you... must be dhalsim."
xerxes: "YOGA FLAME!!"

i thought the collapsible archive in the blogger beta was pretty cool, so i decided to move up my template to the beta version.

unfortunately, it sucked.

not the archive widget, mind you, but the way betablogger prevents classic templates from being used. now, i've pretty much grown fond of this old template, and frankly, i don't have the time or inclination to modify a new one. so i reverted back to classic and used my old, funky black template.

as for beta, maybe i'll wait for blogger to provide backwards compatibility for old classic templates before i upgrade.

i've never played guitar hero, becuase i don't have a console. but a lot of my friends do, and they testify to it being one of THE great games of today. i saw a guy playing at sm north, however. it was pretty good, although the guitar itself looks like a kid's toy. the music selection is wack, though.

i would probably be more excited playing guitar hero, if we had a console here like THIS. man oh man, i want one of these!

loserpalooza

do any of you guys know somebody who went to the lovapalooza, just to watch the bands? well, i do -- i know a guy who went and did exactly that. this guy was a sore thumb, an island in a sea of cuddling, hugging couples.

yeah, yeah, we're all thinking the same thing. loser! pathetic! what a total wipeout of a dude right there!

here's a short first-hand account of lovapalooza - from a totally unencumbered, totally single point of view.

i arrived at the MOA around 1pm. the sun was out but it wasn't really hot because it's still half-past february. and it really was the coldest part of the year. i realized with some amusement that i was wearing my red RockEd shirt (the one with the "TAMA NA'NG PALUSOT" on the front), and you had to be wearing red if you wanted to go inside what they call the "kissing pit" inside the lovapalooza grounds. i had no real plans to be part of it, however; i went to MOA because i got burned watching denzel's dejavu recently, and wanted to catch a screening of brad pitt's babel.

after seeing the grounds, i saw that orange and lemons was going to be playing later, and so decided to watch the show. also i would really be a wuss if i didn't even try to remedy having no one to be with that day, so i went to seattle's best (the airconditioning is cool and there aren't too many people), and called up cess.

no soap.

i got myself a large coffee and a croissant and killed four hours reading a stephen king novel i brought, dialling cess's number every so often.

four hours and i still can't reach her.
she really must be turning off her phone for the whole february.

so it was night. the show was starting, although the actual kissing won't start until midnight, i think. there were already a lot of people strolling around. as expected, most people walked in pairs. i think i can classify the groups around the lovapalooza grounds pretty much like this: some families, a shitload of couples, groups of punks (you know the type --- black deftones or sex pistols shirt, anime-inspired hair, loose necktie, ball-hugging jeans, fake chuck taylors), security people, and me.

ONL is still great, and it was even better seeing them live. they also performed a couple of great covers: Pure Imagination and Close to You. there was also a laugh riot when clem said to the crowd, "oi, baka naman may mga wala pang partner diyan, kasi kami naghahanap pa rin eh. pero ayoko nung may balbas; allergic ako eh." there were a couple of minutes when their song was interrupted by these loud booms, and people forgot about ONL for awhile as they turned their heads to watch the fireworks (which the MOA has been putting out every saturday night).

after a while i felt it was pretty pathetic for me to be staying there, without any partner. kids selling these roses for Php25 apiece were continually going to me, probably on account of me also wearing red. and i very well can't buy any. so after their set played Hanggang Kailan, i decided to split the scene. another february day spent pretty much like every other february day i've had for a long time.

me, i'm gonna wash my red shirt and it use again on wednesday. and i'm gearing up to get flowers from dangwa early morning. you never know, i might catch her phone ringing.
