The Heretics recorded Goat Milk Fudge in 1992 at the studio owned by Robbie from The Goo Goo Dolls which was released by Repulsion Records. The Heretics still write music today and rumor has it that there could be new material coming out soon. Josh and I talk about gear and recording as well as his love for his Laney tube amp.

The JimmyFro Indie-Music Podcast is a showcase for independent artists both local and global with favoritism to Youngstown Warren NE Ohio artists. I hope that it will also be a network pool and tool for artists that are trying to make a mark in the local music scene if not the secular music industry. The show can also serve as a Consumer Reports reference for artists to know which Venue’s take care of musicians and which ones may not. Check out the JimmyFroShow Youtube Channel also and subscribe for the FREE podcast @iTunes store.

Darling Waste began in Cleveland, Ohio. Chasing the dream to New York City, Darling Waste evolved into a 5-piece "mobile rock unit" and hit the road. After eight years, over 600 DIY shows in 11 countries, & an incomprehensible number of miles & hours spent wearing out 10 vans, the band has built a fiercely loyal army of devoted fans. After selling close to 11,000 records without a record label or distribution, the industry has also taken note. The band's music has been featured on MTV, VH1, Showtime and Miramax distributed films, and has been played in rotation on over 100 radio stations internationally.

These accomplishments are a direct result of Darling Waste spending years paying their dues: battling the elements, stints of homelessness, instrument thefts and broken hands, feet and jaws while playing self-booked tours of basements, VFW halls, and dimly lit clubs. The release of Darling Waste's critically acclaimed 2009 album " I Am Born" saw the band nominated for a British Music Week Award & invited to the Brighton Music Awards, where they were co-presenters with Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin and Roger Daltrey of The Who. The single "Changing of the Seasons" became the band's biggest song to date, earning a spot in Alternative Addiction's Top 100 Romantic Singles of all time. Darling Waste's 2012 international release "Good and Bad Angels", takes their signature blend of introspective, honest lyrics and piano-driven indie rock to new emotional heights. This emotional intensity can be heard in the album's singles, “When The Ball Drops (Or Nua Lang Syne)” and “Please Lie To Me”, songs that show the members of Darling Waste are proud to wear their hearts on their sleeves.

Darling Waste's music and lyrics come across best during the band's dynamic live show where the line between artist and fan becomes blurred. It is this connection that manifests itself in fans bringing homemade shirts & signs to the concert or sharing a post show meal with the band. Dozens of fans have gone as far as having the bands logo tattooed on them as a sign of permanent devotion, proving there is no such thing as a casual Darling Waste fan.

The band's working class mentality, dynamic live show, and fan connection have afforded Darling Waste opportunities to play several UK festivals and share the stage with Blink 182, Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, Bayside, Dashboard Confessional, Saliva, Yellowcard, Saves the Day, Something Corporate, Secondhand Serenade, Aiden, Kill Hannah, and many others.

I enjoyed talking with Shiloh and Paul. They were incredibly kind and appreciative about the experience. This band is studio ready and I understand they're are shopping for the right studio as we speak (type.) The recorded performances came out well and I really really like the songs; especially "Pull of the Moon." Please go to iTunes store and SUBSCRIBE for free.

Self-described "Post-Hardcore" band Sun Fights Shade from Vermillion Ohio performs a few songs and talks about their music. SFS has played the Cleveland Music Festival and will be performing at the Breakout Fest. Click HERE for info. Their music has teeth and balls to contend with. It's impossible to listen to songs like "All Aboard" and not headbang. They've got the chops and the crunch to check the hardcore box and in many aspects the Metal box as well. I appreciate their sense of humor also and how it diversifies the Sun Fights Shade product and I'm excited to hear how new vocalist Zac Angney effects the band's sound.

These guys drove all the way from Vermillion Ohio, (near Sandusky) to be on the podcast and that in concert with their subbing in of the lyric JIMMY FRO SHOW!!! into their own song..totally impressed me and encouraged me. They're going to be around for a while because they're confident but wise, and not afraid to listen to different perspectives. Due to time limitations I was not able to mic my house kit for a full drum sound, and for that I sincerely apologize to the band. I hope they'll come back and do a Live at Daryl's House kinda think some time in the future.

The band will be performing at the Grog Shop in Cleveland on Sunday Feb 24th 2013 with the Cardboard Cutouts. (also featured on the Jfro Show) Check our Youtube page and SUBSCRIBE to see a Video Performance by Sun Fights Shade. Please SUBSCRIBE AT itunes to get all episodes FREE.

Jimmy Taylor, in addition to being the percussionist from The HappyMon Band, is a jack of many trades and hobbies. He's played drums for SIDESHOW, Mellowcrash, VIRGIN, Pegasus, and currently plays percussion for the HAPPY MON BAND, standing up. That's right, he plays a modified kit standing..up. Where as Dave Mathews or the Buffet band utilizes a drummer and 2 auxiliary percussionists, Jimmy plays all parts at once. His drum kit (see above)has been featured in MODERN DRUMMER. From the MD article: "..when I first joined the band the leader demanded that I stand up and play like a percussionist. I accepted the challenge and removed my hi-hat and added congas in their place.

"It definitely opened my eyes to learning new techniques to cover critical percussion parts and the drumset while standing."

Although we couldn't fit everything on the podcast, Jim mentioned Rich Hall and his wife and co-leader of HappyMon Beth Hall, who is a fine vocalist. Her heroes are Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin and does them both well. Bassist Greg Possey, the band's MVP doubles as a stage manager, mechanic, carpenter, electrician, and all around maintenance man. Greg and Rich built most of their stage props and stage set. Greg is also the band's expert truck driver; getting the band to each gig safely and on time.
.
Check out the Happy Mon Band.

Check out more vintage photos above while you listen. (click on to enlarge)

Many folks know Jim because of he does a monthly beer tasting at Michael Charles Beer & Wines on Elm Rd in Warren. Go here to here his other beer tasting podcast session. Jimmy showed me how to tune toms and avoid "sympathetic" snare sounds. He's an incredibly thorough man who can talk intelligently about anything. Great guy great drummer, great fan of music, and I'm glad I glad I met him.

There was a point when we were playing tunes for one another like high-school kids shuffling through record collections, talking about each other's podcast, and I said to Jim
"Ya know.. we're doing the same thing."

I feel a new friendship hatched and I look forward to crossing our rock laser streams to forge a more perfect bolt of support for Youngstown, Ohio, PA independent music.

Dolfish along with the band Poison Control Center is on the Afternoon Records Label. Although his music may not be fitting or engineered for accessible indie pop or indie rock radio, if you like the band Wheatus, you will like the quirky high octave vocals of the artist this is Dolfish. Whereas songs like "Your love is bummin me out" begs to be on the soundtrack of every teen mall-rat memory, the song "Grownups" is more emotional sonic art and his melodic cadence or lack there-of is made up of lyrics with each word going rhythmically rogue from the word it followed. His music is personal and would lend itself nicely to a dramatic musical.

I found Max to be down to earth, experienced, and enjoyable to talk to. There's a lot to learn from his thoughts and tour-story reflections. Please head over to afternoon records and pick up his new LP "I'd rather disappear than stay the same." Check out his website HERE.

The clip from the song "Grownups" was borrowed from Daytrotter.com. Please go to Daytrotter and check out the entire DOLFISH feature @daytrotter.
