August 18th info

It's the final day of the 2011 SCCY CNE Job Fair - and the CNE officially opens in just two days!

Before I get the info on who is attending the job fair, I would like to thank all of you who have read and commented on my posts - I really appreciate it! I hope I was able to provide some great insider info on how to land a CNE job. And feel free to let me know what your experiences have been like - whether positive (I got the job!) or negative (I waited for 8 hours and didn't get an interview!).

As for today's employer list, there's just one employer scheduled to attend but it's still worthwhile to venture down to the Dufferin Gates.

At the moment, only Frontier Foods will be at the job fair from 10:00am to 12:00pm and they are looking to hire Counter Attendants. Although the schedule I have says that they are interviewing pre-screened candidates, you may want to head down there on the off-chance they have an extra interview spot or two.

But more importantly, if you go, you might also be able to walk around the CNE and speak with vendors directly who may need to hire additional staff. If you do decide to do this, read my post on how to find a job with the CNE for tips on how to uncover hidden CNE vendor jobs.

And yes, it's been successful - I've heard from a number of readers that they've scored last-minute jobs with CNE vendors. One in particular managed to land a $15/hr job helping a vendor set-up - not bad for spending a few hours walking around the CNE grounds!

If you're planning on attending the SCCY CNE Job Fair, here are some things to keep in mind:

1.) Take public transit. If going by the TTC, take the subway to Dufferin station and then take the 29 Dufferin bus southbound to the "Dufferin Gate Loop" stop. If you're going by GO Train, take the Lakeshore West train to Exhibition GO Station. After exiting the station, walk west along Manitoba Drive to Saskatchewan Road. Continue to walk west along Saskatchewan Road and then head north on Dufferin Street.

2.) Get your resume and cover letter ready. Download the free cover letter and resume templates I've developed. And if you need help, job fair staff will be on hand each day to help you tailor your resume and cover letter for the job(s) you want.

3.) Bring photo ID with you in case you get an on-the-spot job offer.

4.) Dress professionally - khakis or dress pants and a button shirt are perfect. And bring a sweater or rain jacket because the weather near the lake can change quickly.

5.) Arrive early to register for an interview slot because the job fair works on a first come, first served basis. Employers have a limited number of interview slots and the slots for the popular jobs fill quickly. According to some reports, students are lining up at 7am to secure an interview spot - so arrive early or you may be disappointed!

6.) After registering for an interview, stay close to the job fair area and don't leave. You may lose your spot if the job fair staff call you name and you don't show up.

7.) Bring activities like games, cards, or a book, along with drinks and snacks since the job fair is in an area where there isn't much going on.

8.) Have fun!

For more information, contact the SCCY - Dufferin Mall staff at 416 583 4849 or sign up for email updates with manal.hossain@servicecanada.gc.ca.

Good luck - and again, thank you for reading and commenting! :-)
August 16th info

It's Day 7 of the SCCY CNE Job Fair and we're approaching the finish line - in just 4 days the CNE will officially open. And although the job fair is more than half over, you can still find some interesting positions with employers looking to make last-minute additions to their teams.

Here is an up-to-date list of the employers scheduled to attend the SCCY CNE Job Fair - being held at the Dufferin Gates - on August 15:

The Canadian Midway will be at the job fair from 10:00am to 12:00pm and they are looking to hire approximately 50 Ride Attendants. And please note, because this tends to be a popular job, I recommend that you head down to the job fair as early was possible - I heard that some people started lining up at 6am and I've heard from others that the spent hours in line, only to be told that all the jobs were filled.

Daddy Mike's Funnel Cake will be at the job fair from 10:00am to 1:00pm and they are looking to hire 3 Servers.

And if you're looking for a full- or part-time job once the CNE ends and have you a food handling and/or SmartServe certificate, check out the 10 different jobs available with Centerplate. They will be at the job fair from 10:00am to 4:00pm.
August 15th info

Okay, so week two of the SCCY CNE Job Fair is upon us and there are still some great CNE jobs available. And because there are more than 150 vacancies available, you'll want to head down to the Dufferin Gates, located at 10 Dufferin Street, really early.

Here is an up-to-date list of the employers scheduled to attend the SCCY CNE Job Fair on August 15:

Sodexowill be at the job fair from 11:00am to 1:00pm and they are looking to hire 6 Order Pickers and Deliverers.

The Canadian Midway will be at the job fair from 11:00am to 2:00pm and they are looking to hire approximately 100 to 150 Ticket Sellers to work the midway games. And please note, because this tends to be a popular job, get down to the job fair as early was possible - I heard that some people started lining up at 6am and on a day when 150 jobs are available, you're bound to get lots and lots of job seekers.

You're probably thinking your out of luck, right?!

Well not so fast ... there are some unadvertised CNE jobs and read on for some insider tips on how you can tap into those last-minute CNE jobs!

First of all, there's still 4 days of hiring left during the annual SCCY CNE Job Fair. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of next week all have multiple employers scheduled to attend and conduct on-the-spot interviews.

You'll also want to head down because the organizers of the CNE job fair sometimes get last-minute employers who show up unannounced. In fact, 5 years ago when I was involved in organizing the event, we had multiple employers show up at the last-minute and hire more than 40 students. Of course, there's no guarantee this will happen, but you can hope right?

Another good reason to head down to the CNE job fair this week - you can often talk to employers directly.

Since the CNE grounds are open, you can walk around and talk to the people setting up their booths or stalls for the CNE. And doing that can sometimes lead to a job offer.

I recommend doing this because some employers don't participate in the CNE job fair as they don't know what their hiring needs are. But then they realize, usually a few days before the CNE begins, that they need more staff.

If you do decide to do this, I recommend that you make a generic resume that's full of the common skills that CNE employers look for:

- Communication and interpersonal skills
- Teamwork skills
- Able to make fast, quick, and accurate calculations
- Skilled at multitasking
- Customer service skills
- Food handling experience
- Visual merchandising experience
- Maturity
- Responsibility
- Reliability
- Flexible availability and can work a variety of shifts
- Able to take direction and follow instructions
- Quick learner
- Professional appearance
- Courteous and respectful

These skills, regardless of the job you are applying for, are definite assets and are the hidden soft skills that all CNE employers look for.

And remember, if you're going at it alone, go during the day, be safe and aware of your surroundings, and if a situation doesn't feel right, leave immediately.

Making a few bucks isn't worth compromising your safety!

Good luck!
And if you're looking for a full- or part-time job once the CNE ends and have you a food handling and/or SmartServe certificate, check out the 10 different jobs available with Centerplate. They will be at the job fair from 12:00pm to 3:00pm.

Good luck - and remember to come back later for an updated list of employers attending tomorrow!

Good luck - and remember to come back later for an updated list of employers attending tomorrow!

Update #1

Okay, the wait is finally over.

That's right - today I'm talking about what so many people have emailed me about - the annual Service Canada CNE Job Fair!

If you've never heard of the job fair, here's the Coles Notes version. Each year, staff from the Service Canada Centre for Youth in Dufferin Mall organize a job fair that attracts a range of employers that operate during the CNE. And because of the size and duration of the CNE, these employers need to fill hundreds of full-time and part-time CNE jobs and hence the reason for the job fair.

This year, the SCCY CNE Job Fair will run from Monday, August 8th through until Wednesday, August 17th. Each day, the job fair begins at 10:00am and will last until approximately 4:00pm. And just like last year, the 2011 Service Canada CNE Job Fair will take place at the Dufferin Gates, which are located at 10 Dufferin Street.

The best way to get to the job fair is via public transit.

TTC: Take the subway to Dufferin station and then take the 29 Dufferin bus southbound and exit at 'Dufferin Gate Loop'.

Go Transit: Take the Lakeshore West train to Exhibition Go Station. After exiting the station, walk west along Manitoba Drive to Saskatchewan Road. Continue to walk west until you reach Dufferin Street and then walk north.

To get ready for the CNE job fair, here's what I recommend doing:

1.) Visit the Service Canada Student Job Bank to find a list of the companies looking to recruit at the job fair. Some, but not all, of the positions are listed.

INSIDER TIP: Check out my blog each day during this year's CNE job fair because I'll be updating the employer list on a daily basis.

2.) Get your resume and cover letter ready. If you don't already have one, download my free cover letter and resume templates. These templates are already properly formatted and all you have to do is input your information.

Also, check out my tips on creating an eye-catching cover letter and a resume that stands out from the crowd

And don't worry - if you can't get a resume or cover letter done in time, there will be staff on hand during the job fair that will be able to help you create one.

3.) Arrive early! The job fair works on a first come, first served basis. Employers have a limited number of interviews they are going to do and you have to register to take part. And although the job fair officially begins at 10:00am, some people will arrive early to line up so they can register for the employers they really want to work for. Get there early so you aren't disappointed!

4.) Dress professionally! I recommend business casual - khakis or dress pants and a button shirt are perfect. And consider what they weather will be like - a sweater or rain jacket could be necessary since the temperature can fluctuate quickly.

5.) Bring photo ID with you. You never know - you may get an on-the-spot job offer and you will want to be prepared.

6.) After registering for an interview, do not leave! You may lose your spot and your chance to impress the hiring manager. Stay close by since staff will call your name to let you know that your interview is coming up.

7.) Bring activities - like games, cards, or a book - along with drinks and snacks since the job fair is in an area where there isn't much going on.

8.) Remember to have fun!

For more information, contact the SCCY - Dufferin Mall staff at 416 583 4849 or sign up for email updates with manal[-dot-]hossain[-at-]servicecanada.gc.ca.

Good luck - and remember to come back each day for an updated list of employers attending the CNE job fair!

Work the CNE with Maple Lodge

Okay, so July is almost over - gosh, where did it go? - and that means the CNE is inching ever closer to opening. And just like in years past, I'll be highlighting some of the full-time and part-time opportunities offered by businesses and organizations that operate during the CNE.

Earlier today, I was on the Service Canada Student/Youth Job Bank and I came across one of the first (of many) CNE job ads. The job ad is for an opportunity to join Maple Lodge Farms as a Food Demonstrator.

Here are some key facts about the job:

- # of vacancies: 12

- Salary: $11.50/hour

- Anticipated start date: August 14, 2011

- Location: CNE grounds in Toronto

- Duties: marketing and promoting items to customers; completing sales transactions

To apply for this job, send your cover letter and resume to the attention of "Mr. John Botelho" and apply via fax (905 455 8378) or email (jbotelho@maplelodgefarms.com).

You can also apply in person, between 9am and 5pm, at Maple Lodge located at 8301 Winston Churchill Blvd., Brampton, Ontario, L6Y 0A2.

Good luck!
Promotions jobs with Mosaic

A while ago, I featured a variety of full- and part-time jobs with Consumer Impact Marketing, a provider of in-person/experimental marketing and sales management services in Canada.

Recently, my brother completed some contract work with Mosaic XM, another in-person/experimental brand marketing company in Canada. Like CIM, Mosaic is always looking to hire outgoing, personable, and professional people for temporary part- and full-time jobs promoting the latest products and services across Canada.

And so today, I thought I'd highlight the interesting opportunities available with Mosaic, what the Mosaic recruitment process involves, and how to make yourself stand out from other applicants.

To give you a sense of what Mosaic XM does, here's a small blurb from their website.

With over 20 years of success throughout North America, Mosaic is the clear leader in outsourced in-field services. More than that, however, we are leaders in the new reality of consumer-centric marketing. We execute 1000's of consumer events every year at retail locations, community events, or other targeted locations. All of this activity is seamlessly linked to a brand's overarching media strategy and delivered by trained Mosaic brand ambassadors.

If working for Mosaic sounds like the perfect job for you, you'll have to apply online as Mosaic accepts online applications. You can access a full list of available opportunities by visiting the Mosaic Job Portal and once you find a job that interests you, click on the "Apply Now" button.

Generally speaking, this is how Mosaic's recruitment strategy works. First you create a profile where you list your skills and experience as they relate to the job you are applying for. If you happen to be a good fit, you'll likely be called for a telephone screening interview. If you're successful at that, you'll proceed to the next step - the group interview. Sometimes there will be an additional in-person interview and other times not - it depends on the client and the urgency to staff the position.

Take note that the compensation varies depending on the client and the project. And some contracts will last a day or two, others longer - again, this depends on the client and the job you applied for.

For further information on the recruitment process, visit Mosaic's FAQ section

First of all, thank you to everyone that reads my blog. I can't believe it but in August, I'll have been doing this for 4 years - it seems like just yesterday that I put up a short article on how to I found one of my first jobs.

Anyway, this is just a quick update - I've now officially changed my blog title to "The Hiring Hotline"! And I've got a new URL - www.thehiringhotline.com

Why the change ... well, long story short, I was getting tired of explaining to potential employers that "The Job Jumper" was a satirical play on the move from full-time permanent positions to contract work. So after doing some research, I settled on "The Hiring Hotline" - a name that reflects that I talk about job search strategies while also highlighting interesting job opportunities for students and youth.

So please share the link - www.thehiringhotline.com - with anybody that might find what I write about helpful. And don't forget, you can always get in touch with me by email at andrew[-at-]thehiringhotline[-dot-]com.

Cheers,

Andrew
CNE Casino hiring underway

As I talked about in a recent post on summer jobs with the CNE, not only are there job opportunities with the CNE itself, but the businesses and organizations that take part in the Ex also hire.

And recently, the Service Canada Student/Youth Job Bank featured three opportunities to join the CNE's Casino at The Better Living Centre.

Job title: Casino Gambling Dealer
Salary: $10.25/hr + tips
Special note: The CNE Casino intends to hire all successful graduates who apply for and receive a valid Ontario Gaming License.

Job title: Cashier
Number of vacancies: 20
Salary: $10.25/hr + tips
Duties: distributes money to gaming guests via conversion of coins, tokens and gaming chips into currency; protects company assets while dealing with the public; maintains all funds entrusted on assigned shift

Job title: Security Officer
Number of vacancies: 100
Salary: $11/hr
Duties: ensures safety and emergency procedures are followed; protects a particular area (e.g. observation and reporting); drafts reports dealing with internal, criminal, or injury-related matters

To apply for any of these three opportunities, you must apply in person, between 12:00 and 9:00pm, at:

195 Princes Boulevard
Toronto, Ontario, M6K 3C3

Here's a map in case you aren't familiar with the area:

Although the job ads make no explicit mention of any particular age, my guess is that you need to be over 18 or 19 years of age as that is how old you must be in order to purchase lottery tickets and enter a casino respectively.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to contact the CNE Casino by e-mail

Good luck!
CNE jobs update #2

Okay, first of all, my apologies for not updating my blog a lot over the past three(!) weeks. I've been working with some readers in developing their summer job search strategies. And I'm also looking at re-branding and re-developing my blog - stay tuned for details on that.

Anyways, here is my first (of many!) posts that relate to summer jobs with the CNE - and today, I'm focusing on the CNE jobs that the CNE itself is responsible for recruiting.

According to the CNE Jobs site, the only way you can apply for a summer job with the 2011 CNE is to apply online. Unlike in past years, the CNE Recruitment Team will not be organizing a CNE Job Fair. I'm not sure why - personally I think a job fair is the best recruitment strategy for amusement parks - but then again, last year's job fair was really well attended and putting together a great job fair takes time, money, and resources.

So instead this year, those looking for a summer job with the CNE must apply online.

Now, first things first. As with many other companies and organizations, the CNE has chosen to use the Taleo Talent Management system - a system my longtime readers know that I'm not too keen on. Thankfully, the CNE's job application is quite simple and shouldn't present any problems.

When you visit the CNE Jobs site, you'll find the following list of general/generic CNE jobs:

Attraction Services - Job #CNE100

Audit Services - Job #CNE101

Cleaning Services - Job #CNE102

Supervisory Services - Job #CNE103

Vehicle Drivers - Job #CNE104

Visitor Services - Job #CNE105

Under each of these general jobs are specific summer job opportunities available with the CNE. You'll have to click each one to find out what specific job(s) fall under which general job. You can also use the links on the left-hand side of the page which will give you more information about each job.

Once you find a job you'd like to apply for, you must click on the "Apply Now" button found at the bottom of the job ad and then register by choosing a username and password. Then you will directed to the 2011 CNE Job Application.

The application form itself is quite simple and you will have to upload a cover letter and resume after answering some pre-screening questions.

INSIDER'S TIP: To ensure that you think about each of your answers, I recommend starting the application and then copying and pasting the screening questions into an MS Word document. Then you can take a few moments to review each question carefully before making your decision.

Make sure you press "SAVE & CONTINUE" after each page. If you don't, you will lose your work. And don't use the "Back" button on your browser - it really messes with the Taleo system and you'll lose your work.

And one last thing, if you want to apply for multiple jobs that fall under different general job categories (e.g. a job under the Cleaning Services and a job under the Audit Services category), you must apply twice. However, the good thing about this year's CNE Job Application Form is that you can apply for up to three related positions on each application - so might as well list three and increase your chances of securing a summer job with the 2011 CNE.

Good luck!
Tips for landing a retail summer job

With June is quickly coming to a close, more and more high school students are slowly waking up the realization that the summer job season is in full swing - and if they don't act quickly, they'll be left behind. But don't despair - if you haven't found anything yet, keep looking because there are still many summer jobs available and looking to be filled.

One sector that tends to attract high school students and is still hiring is the retail industry. With flexible working hours, an indoor/AC-controlled environment, staff perks, and the possibility to work in the same place as your friends, it's no wonder why so many high school students hope to find a summer retail job.

But how can you find that perfect retail summer job?

Easy! Just follow these five steps to finding a perfect retail summer job ...

1. Plan your strategy.

Don't just print off 25 resumes and hand them out randomly - hiring managers can easily spot who is doing this and your resume will likely end up in the 'NO' pile. Instead, create a list of stores you want to work at using the mall's website or the free mall maps given to mall visitors. This will help you track the stores you are interested in, if they are hiring, where you've dropped off a resume, and who you need to follow up with.

INSIDER TIP: Ever notice that many stores no longer have "Hiring Now" signs in their window? That's because malls typically have dedicated sections on their websites where they list employment opportunities. For examples, see the 'Jobs' section on the Pickering Town Centre website or on the Fairview Mall website. If you want a retail job this summer, this is one of the first places you should look.

2. Revamp your resume and cover letter

Ensure you have a top-notch and targeted <a href="http://thejobjumper.blogspot.com/2007/11/basics-creating-resume.html"target="_blank">retail resume and cover letter ready.

INSIDER TIP: If you've never worked before, use a functional resume to highlight key retail skills (e.g. communication, customer service, and math skills) and desirable personality attributes (e.g. responsibility and reliability). If you have worked, use a combination resume as it will allow you to highlight both your skills and relevant experience.

3. Complete an application form

If required by the store, ensure that you have completed an application form. There's nothing worse than walking into a store, speaking with a hiring manager, and finding out that s/he will not accept your resume because you need to complete an application form. Make sure you've got all three documents and put them in the following order - application form, cover letter, resume.

INSIDER TIP: Pay close attention to the some of the tricky and off-beat questions that are commonly found on application forms. They are designed to trip up potential applicants, so be on the lookout and know how to answer them properly.

4. Personalize your application.

Visit the mall and personally deliver your cover letter, resume, and application form to the manager at a time when the store isn't as busy. That means you shouldn't attempt to hand out your resume at 6pm on a Friday night. Instead, opt for a Tuesday or Wednesday morning as store managers tend to be less busy and more open to having a brief chat about employment opportunities.

INSIDER TIP: Do the numbers 110 and 435 mean anything to you? Well they do to some hiring managers! 110 is the number often assigned to resumes that are going to the "NO" pile as the numbers (110) almost make the word "NO" - just add a diagonal line to make the 'N'. Conversely, 435 are resumes going to "YES" pile as these numbers spell the word "YES" - 4 for the 'Y', 3 is a backwards 'E', and 5 for 'S'.

5. Be prepared for an on-the-spot interview. Sometimes the manager has enough time to sit down for a quick chat and you should be ready.

INSIDER TIP: Follow up, follow up, follow up! I cannot stress this enough! Ensure that you touch base with hiring managers after you've spoken with them. It reinforces your commitment and desire to get the job - as well, it can also alert you to any issues with your application (e.g. one of your references hasn't returned the manager's phone call.

Good luck!

At first, I thought each of the jobs was with the same employer, but upon review, I noticed that they were being advertised by HospitalityServe.com, a website that targets those looking for employment in the restaurant industry. Think of it as a Workopolis or Monster - only specifically geared towards the restaurant industry.

Personally, I've always been a fan of websites that focus on recruiting for specific industries because they tend to have more in-depth listings than general job websites. One of my favourite job websites was the now-defunct JobLoft.com because it had tons of listings and focused on the exact industries that students tend to gravitate to - retail, restaurant, and promotions/in-person marketing.

If you're looking for a summer job in the restaurant industry, definitely check out the listings on HospitalityServe.com. The website itself is easy to use - just select the location and type of position you are looking for.

If you find a job you would like to apply for, you can apply using their website, but I would caution against it - nothing against the website itself, but the restaurant industry is based on in-person experiences and thus, I recommend applying in-person during a quiet period (e.g. between the lunch and dinner rush - from about 2pm to 4pm is best).

As with any other job, having a resume and cover letter is key. If you don't have one, download some of the free cover letter and resume templates that I've developed.

And one last thing - if you really want to work in the restaurant industry, I recommend getting SmartServe certification. It's an easy, 4-hour online course that teaches you about how to serve alcohol responsibly. Although it's not 100% mandatory, you might as well pay the $45 and do it - it will definitely make you more marketable to prospective employers.

Good luck!

CNE jobs update

Over the past two weeks, I've received a good 30 to 40 emails from readers wondering what's going on with recruiting for Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) jobs this year. After all, by this time last year, the CNE had already set a date for its yearly CNE Summer Job Fair - but this year, nothing's been set yet.

So what gives?

Well at this point, nobody really knows.

According to the CNE's job website, the CNE's Recruitment Team is in the process of developing a new online application form. I've been checking the website periodically and the new application form still isn't available.

In the meantime, if you are planning on applying for a summer job with the CNE, start your preparation now. First, check out the list below for a complete listing of the summer jobs that the CNE's Recruitment Team are looking to fill:
Tractor/Sani-Van Helper

Keep in mind that this list only contains the summer jobs offered by the CNE itself - there are hundreds of jobs offered by exhibitors, midway/games operators, and food/beverage providers that will be filled closer to when the CNE begins. Often, these CNE jobs are advertised on the Service Canada Job Bank and/or during the yearly Service Canada Centre for Youth CNE Job Fair. Keep checking back here for details when they become available.

One last thing, if you don't have a resume and cover letter, take the time to create one. I've uploaded tons of free resume and cover letter templates that can be changed based on the job(s) you are interested in.

For employers, SCCY staff offer a range of services, including:

- Listing job openings for free on the national student job bank
Another City of Toronto summer job

Each year, the one question I'm asked most often is "How can I get a summer job with the government?". And each year, my answer is the same - "You have to start looking in January or even earlier because the government tends to hire and firm up it's summer students early".

But this year, it's been different. Based on what I've seen, given the economic strain that governments at all levels find themselves facing, I'm noticing that more and more are hiring later - perhaps a sign that they, like the private sector, are waiting to confirm budgets and hiring needs before recruiting.

And so today, I'm highlighting a summer job opportunity with the City of Toronto - one that I expected would've been posted earlier in the year. But regardless, it's still a great opportunity to gain valuable work experience in the public sector while earning a decent salary.

Job Title:Summer Student Clerical 2nd Year
File Reference #: 11SUM30
Job status: Temporary - approx. 4 months
Salary: $16.26 per hour

Major Responsibilities:

- Assists in clerical tasks as they relate to the administrative and financial responsibilities of the program area
- Performs computer related tasks such as data entry in SAP, Excel spreadsheets, Word documents, Work Management system (Hansen) etc.
- Responds to enquiries, files, and photocopies
- Provides backup and support to Administrative Assistants and Support Assistants
- Responds to inquiries/complaints made in person by telephone or in writing
- Operates office equipment and computers utilizing a variety of software packages

Key Qualifications:

1. Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of a post secondary degree or diploma program in business studies or other related program area.
2. Strong computer skills including experience in the use of Microsoft Office (i.e. MS Word Excel, PowerPoint).
3. Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
4. Very good interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact with staff and clients in an efficient and diplomatic manner, both in person and over the phone.
5. Excellent organizational skills.
6. Interpersonal skills to work effectively as a member of a team
7. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
8. Ability to work under time constraints and meet deadlines.

Note: The applicant pool from this job posting may be used for similar summer job opportunities in various divisions.

To apply for this summer job opportunity with the City of Toronto, you must complete the City of Toronto Summer Job Application Form. This form can be found at the bottom the job ad - just click the blue "Apply for this position" button.

In addition to your personal details, you will need to cut and paste your resume and cover letter into the appropriate section of the application form.

INSIDER'S TIP: Because the City of Toronto uses Resumix to collect resumes, you must ensure that you have a well-formatted and keyword-heavy electronic resume and cover letter. Also, make sure that you format your resume correctly since special fonts and characters will not show up properly.

To really make your application stand out, read a previous post I wrote on how to analyze job ads for specific keywords - I used a City of Toronto advertisement as an example and I recommend reading it before completing your application.

One last thing, the deadline for applications is tomorrow, May 24, 2011.

Good luck!
Ontario Place still hiring

Okay, so it's May and you could be thinking "Oh my gosh, it's so late. There aren't any jobs left!" Well not to worry ... even though it's May, there's still some really interesting summer job opportunities available - like the summer jobs with the Art Gallery of Ontario that I talked about in my last post.

But if working in an art gallery isn't your thing, then take a look at the summer jobs with Ontario Place. And recently, Ontario Place announced that it will offer free admission and an extended summer season - that's definitely a good sign that Ontario Place will be looking to hire additional staff.

As with all other theme parks, there's a range of summer jobs with Ontario Place that are currently being advertised. For a complete list, check out the Ontario Place Job Book.

To apply for a summer job with Ontario Place, complete the Ontario Place Summer Employment Application Form. You don't need a resume or cover letter, but you do have to enter details from your work, volunteer, and education experience. Also, you need to select at least two jobs you want to apply for - to a maximum of 3 - hence why you need to read and review the job book.

And take note - the application form does include a section with a mandatory behavioural-type question, "Please describe what you would do if you encountered a customer who was complaining of poor service." Definitely take a few moments to craft a good response to this question.

INSIDER'S TIP: For this question, make sure you talk about key cornerstones of good customer service - listening to the customer, paraphrasing their concerns, working efficiently to deal with their concerns, relaying messages to immediate supervisors, etc. If you find it easier, take a specific situation and discuss what you would do in that situation - for example, a customer complaining about the price they were charged for a drink.

Job fair this Friday!

If you're free this coming Friday (May 6th) and you're still looking for a summer job, you'll want to consider checking out the annual summer job fair organized by two Toronto City Councillors, Michael Thompson and Glenn de Baeremaeker.

Held every year in May, this summer job fair provides a great opportunity to tap into last-minute summer jobs while also offering an opportunity to explore and learn about potential career paths.

This year the job fair will take place at the Scarborough Civic Centre on Friday, May 6, 2011 from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

There are many employers scheduled to attend, including:

- RBC
- Sunlife
- Toronto Zoo
- Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment
- CIBC
- UPS Canada

Located at 150 Borough Drive, it's pretty much right across from the TTC and GO Bus stations at Scarborough Town Centre.

INSIDER'S TIP: If you don't have a Social Insurance Number, give yourself some extra time before the job fair begins and visit the
Scarborough Service Canada Centre. Since you're a quick 2 minute walk from the office, bring along the required primary piece of identification and apply in person. It only takes a few minutes and you'll need it once you start working.

For more information on the upcoming job fair, visit Councillor Michael Thompson's website.

If you do decide to go, make sure you've got an outstanding resume and cover letter that highlights your experience and skills. If you don't have a resume or cover letter, download the resume and cover letter templates I've developed.

Have fun - and good luck!
