The sun is shining, Nas is 3 for 3 (nasty, the don, daughters) with new album singles… I think it’s safe to say Escobar season has officially returned.

Check out Nas on the cover of the new Complex Magazine which hits newsstands on June 5th. This summer Complex Mag is celebrating their 10th anniversary 2002-2012… Man 10 years went fast. I think I may still have the first issue of Complex Mag (which featured Nas on it) somewhere around here.

Don’t forget Nas’ new album “Life Is Good” is dropping on July 17th. The summer just got that much better!!!

While most Hypebeast are camping out for re-issued Jordans and waiting on an official date to for the Air Yeezy 2 these babies here have had me salivating since these pics hit the net a few days back.

I’m a big fan of the Nike Air Trainer 1 and the Nike Air Safari 87 so when I saw these I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. Looks like the Trainer and the Safari are being dubbed as the “Safari Pack,” but no word yet on if they will be sold as a pack, or an official release date.

Rest In Peace Adam Yauch Aka MCA (Beastie Boys)

Got the sad news over the weekend MCA from the Beastie Boys has passed away at 47 from cancer. MCA directed many of the Beastie’s videos under the pseudonym Nathaniel Hornblower including my favorite “Intergalactic.” He was also the co-founder of the Milarepa Fund, which supported the Tibetan Independence movement and put on a series of benefit concerts for the cause. In 2008 he made a documentary about high school basketball players, entitled Gunnin’ for that No. 1 Spot.

It’s sad we’ve lost yet another Hip Hop legend, and we’re losing too many, too fast. Recently the NY Knicks and Mets showed respect to MCA during their home games. The other night all the Mets players came out to the different Beastie Boy songs… Even though MCA is gone his activism, and music he recorded as a member of the Beastie Boys will never be forgotten.

I recently caught this mix from DJ Z-Trip where he remixed a lot of BB material. Check it out. R.I.P. MCA. You fought for your right to party now it’s our turn.

DOIN’ IT IN THE PARK: PICK-UP BASKETBALL, NYC explores the definition, history, culture and social impact of New York’s summer b-ball scene, widely recognized as the worldwide “Mecca” of the sport.

In New York City, pick-up basketball is not just a sport. It is a way of life. There are 700+ outdoor courts, and an estimated 500,000 players, the most loyal of which approach the game as a religion, and the playground as their church.

“You can play high school or college for four years. You can play Pro for a decade. You can play pick-up … for life.”

DOIN’ IT IN THE PARK: PICK-UP BASKETBALL, NYC lovingly uncovers this movement through the voices of playground legends, NBA athletes, and most importantly the common ballplayer who all day looks forward to calling “next” game at their local schoolyard.

Co-directors Bobbito Garcia and Kevin Couliau visited 180 courts throughout NYC’s five boroughs to create their debut documentary. They traveled to a majority of the locations by bicycle, carrying camera equipment and a ball in their backpacks. Nas is officially 3 for 3. Late last year he hit us with Nasty with matching video. Then popped up on the “Ghetto Dreams” track with Common (not even counting that one), Dropped “The Don” on us over a month ago, and just a few days ago released the track “Daughters” after his 17 year old daughter posted a picture of a box of condoms on her Instagram. Nas is definitely speaking for all the fathers out there raising young girls into women.

All this is gearing up for Nas’ new album (his 10th album) entitled “Life Is Good” which drops on July 17th. Looks like it’s going to be a long hot summer.

Tomorrow night, Jay Z’s longtime engineer and DJ, Young Guru will be in ATL. There will be a Question & Answer session hosted by Maurice Garland starting at 7pm. Music fans will get the chance to ask Young Guru questions and get inside the mind of Young Guru for two hours. If I was an upcoming engineer, I would want to know just how YG met Jay and became his longtime musical engineer as well as DJ. There’s always a story behind the story.

After the Q&A Young Guru will be hitting the turntables and the party rocking begins.

Last night I got the chance to catch VH1′s Nas Behind The Music special. If you missed it, catch it right here. Follow the journey of Nasty Nas from Queensbridge NYC to Hip Hop Icon.

I’ve been a fan of Nas since day one and still own my copy of Illmatic on cassette tape. I won’t even sit here and lie though, there were Nas songs as well as whole albums that I disliked. There was a time when Nas was straying all the way left from “Nasty” and making jiggy radio friendly cuts which seemed in an effort to keep up with Puff/Big and Jay Z who were repping nyc and also selling millions of records. Just when I would lose faith though, there would be some unreleased track or something from a mixtape I would hear that I thought was downright amazing. All in all, It’s great to see Nas 18 years after his debut still relevant, and making music on his own terms.

I’ve only had to chance to connect with Nas ONCE and it was in passing. I gave him a pound, and told I would love to hear the finished version of “Life Is Like A Dice Game” if it existed. He looked at me chuckled, said “word,” and that was it.

Salute to Nasty Nas, and looking forward to seeing what his 10th album (Life Is Good) has in tour for us. Escobar Season Returns…

I’ve Got Mail Part 12: Señor Kaos Gets A Nike+ Fuel Band

Can you believe it’s been about two years since I’ve done a “I’ve Got Mail” post? Me neither.

Launched on January 19th, and available for sale on Feburary 22nd, 2012, The Nike+ Fuel Band is a bracelet that measures your activity and turns it into a measurement called “Nike Fuel.” In addition to Nike Fuel the device also shows you the time, steps taken, and calories burned with the touch of a button. Connect the device to your computer via USB cable adjust your settings, set a goal, snap it on your arm and your ready to rock. The Fuel Band is set by your height and weight as well as what type of activity you will be conducting.

The device syncs with the Nike+ website so you can track your progress, compare with the Nike+ community and get extra motivation. Sync it wirelessly through Bluetooth to a free mobile app, or via your computer’s USB port (which allows you to charge it, too).

When this Fuel Band was released it was only available at two Nike retail locations in New York City creating a frenzy online to purchase the device. Since it was produced in limited quantities, the Fuel Band sold out instantly as soon as restocked shipments was announced.

So that explains why here it is in April and I’m just now receiving one. If you were at SXSW this year you may have stopped by the Nike Fuel Band compound where a pop up shop was created to sell the bands, which then granted you access to get in the spot. From what I hear there was all sorts of activities from a dunk contest, to meet & greets, to some crazy performances during the evening.

The tagline for the Nike+ Fuel Band is “Make It Count” #MakeItCount. That means whether you’re walking, running, dancing, biking, working out, playing basketball, running for the subway, stay active and make it count. I’m with that and I’ve come up with my own tagline for the Fuel Band:

“Nike+ Fuel Band: Cause bringing light skin brothas back in style #Counts.” … HA. I can’t wait to rock my fuel band at my next show to see how many fuel points I rack up.

Events: Nike Better World With Jason Lester @ Nike Running Lenox

On March 19th, 2012 ultra endurance athlete Jason Lester left New York City with one thing on his mind… making it a better world through sport.

Jason Lester has made the commitment to run/bike from New York City to Eugene, Oregon a journey that will take him 102 days and 4,800 miles to complete. Along the way he’s stopping at Nike Retail Stores, sharing how sport inspires hope, instills discipline, raises confidence and rallies communities.

This past Friday, April 13th, Jason Lester made a stop in Hotlanta to visit the Nike Running Store at Lenox Mall. On his way in he was joined by the Cross Country teams of local Atlanta Sutton Middle School and Cross Keys High School. Over 50 young runners met Jason at the 1.82 mile mark on Peachtree Street to greet him with a lil southern hospitality and welcome him to ATL.

As he ran into the mall he was greeted by Atlanta Falcons cheerleaders, Freddy The Falcon (Atlanta Falcons Mascot), Skyhawk (Atlanta Hawks Stunt Mascot), students from the Ryan Cameron Foundation, as well as the staff of the Nike Running Store at Lenox. Signs were made to wave, and noise was made to praise Jason for making his 1,000 mile journey from nyc to atl.

Inside the store, Jason shared his story including losing his right arm in a hit & run car accident as well as his father to a heart attack at 12 years old. He let the audience know that only you can write your destiny, no one else can write it for you. He also spoke about his passion for sport, doing good with a vengeance, how many Nike Fuel points he’s earned so far, and left the city of Atlanta with inspiration and motivation to keep going.

As a Nike Better World Ambassador, I was honored to get a chance to conduct some of the Q&A with Jason as well as share a poem I wrote about his travels entitled “Better Journey.”

The event was truly amazing. On Saturday morning I ran with the Nike Team 1.82 miles south on Peachtree Street to send Jason off. I must say my runners knee kicked in and my knees were SHOT, but it hurt so good to be apart of a once in a lifetime experience. Tupacs Back!!!? Hologram 2 Pac Performing At 2012 Coachella (Full Video)

Sooooo it’s Sunday night and my interview on WRAS 88.5 (Georgia State University College Radio) has just aired. I’m responding to text from a few friends who checked out the interview. I’m feeling a little restless so I lay down but don’t go to sleep.

Earlier in the day I caught some of the Coachella Music Festival which was actually streaming on a You Tube channel. I wathced Santigold’s set (which I liked) and ended up getting back to work eventually.

But the thing I really wanted to catch, along with thousands of other Hip Hop fans, was Snoop & Dre reuniting on stage together after several years. There was even rumored to be a Nate Dogg appearance in the form of a hologram on several songs. Nate Dogg coming back to life in the form of a hologram to croon the hooks on several hits. This was Do Not Miss viewing!

I ended up falling asleep for a few hours so I missed the set. When I awoke about 4am which was 1am Cali time, I checked my Twitter timeline to my surprise EVERYBODY is talking about Tupac’s performance. WHAT? Pac has been gone 16 years, so imagine my surprise when I see his name along with that he just rocked the stage. I immediately cruised the net for any footage of this that may be available, and within maybe 30 minutes I caught some footage taken from a cell phone where you really couldn’t tell if this was a hologram of Pac or an impostor.

It wouldn’t be till about 9 this morning before I caught some better footage (see video below). When I caught this video it was sitting at like 301 views. Several hours later it’s at 600 thousand plus.

My first thought? I thought it was INCREDIBLE how real it looked. The 3D, the way he moved around the stage, the dancing, etc all looked so REAL. I could only imagine someone in the crowd who was drunk or high watching that and tripping out. ESPECIALLY when Pac says “What Up Coachella.” Now that was a lil crossing the line. HA. It’s one thing to bring Pac back for us to remember him and his music. It’s another to make us feel like he’s REALLY there in the present.

I saw Jazzy Jeff tweet that this was something Dr. Dre had been planning for a long time, and word is it was commissioned with Afeni Shakur’s blessing (I hope so).

I’m surprised Puffy didn’t think of this first. I wonder what will happen next. Will the hologram of Tupac go on a world tour to sold out arenas worldwide? Will we see other artists brought back from the dead to perform live one more time? Michael Jackson, Elvis, Biggie, Big Pun, etc. … I hope not.

While I was very surprised and excited to see this video today, I hope it doesn’t start a trend. In the meantime while this joint is still available on You Tube check it out…

Event: Red Bull Music Academy x Akai MPC Renaissance Workshop

On Friday April 2nd, I hosted the Red Bull Music Academy x Akai MPC workshop to showcase the new Akai Pro MPC Renaissance. This also served as an opportunity for Atlanta artists to turn in their applications for the 2012 Red Bull Music Academy. It all took place at Tree Sounds Studios with special guest Dan Gill (Akai), Sean C (Producer, Hitmen), and some of ATL’s emerging producers including: DJ Burn One, DJ Pocket, Salem Psalms, Herobust, Groove Chambers, Morgan The Mexican, etc.

The MPC Renaissance is Akai’s new drum machine / work station that has NOT been released for public purchase yet. This event served as a great opportunity for music gear heads to check out the latest and greatest. Even those not into making beats such as myself could learn a new trick or two.

The next day there was a private session held at Patchwerk Studios with the Big Boy producers: Don Cannon, Brian Michael Cox, Jazze Pha, Etc. Producers seem to be pretty excited about the MPC Renaissance. Akai has officially changed the way users will connect with the MPC, now lets see if producers use this device to create a new musical landscape that we can connect with. The future awaits.

My guess is you’ll see the Renaissance make an appearance at the 2012 Red Bull Music Academy sessions in New York City this fall as well.

In 2010 I was invited into the studio to work on a verse for The Constellations single “We’re Here To Save The Day” from their debut album “Southern Gothic.” I was excited for the opportunity and had a great experience writing/recording the track.

However due to music industry politics Virgin Records decided they wanted Asher Roth on the record instead of me, and my version was scrapped and has never seen the light of day.

I’ve held on this song for over 2 years now, while it’s been collecting dust on a random flash drive. The song went on to be a success appearing on television and video games since its release. The time has come for me to liberate the music. I’m making it available as a free download for all my fans today.

Going through my vault, I realized I have a LOT of songs/verses that were recorded (some for me… some for others) that have never been heard. Many of them have interesting stories behind them as well. Maybe this music will find a home on a project one day… but as long as they find a home on your computer/iPod/MP3 Player, I’m just as happy.
