New Music: Spree Wilson & The Flush – “Life In Technicolor” EP

Spree Wilson and The Flush? I know what you’re thinking, sounds like a band right? Wrong. Spree Wilson is actually a emcee/singer/songwritter – let’s just say artist for all intents and purposes, and The Flush is a team of producers, both representing ATL. Well I just got my hands on this 6 track EP, released for free download, and it’s definitely worth checking out.

Reminds me of what they were playing in ATL when I moved here in the 90′s.

I’ve known Spree for some years now. I honestly can’t even remember how or where we originally met, we both were just always in the same places at the same time. Well, maybe not exactly. Spree definitely spent a lot more time in the studio than me, Working with the likes of Esthero, Dallas Austin, Novel and a host of others over the years.

News: Beastie Boy MCA Gets His Own Park In Brooklyn

Adam Yauch better known around the world as MCA from the Beastie Boys passed away one year ago (tomorrow) after fighting a battle with cancer for 3 years.

Today in Brooklyn Heights (Brooklyn, NY) Palmetto Playground was renamed to Adam Yauch Park after MCA. As Hip Hop started out in the parks of New York City it’s pretty amazing to have a park named a rapper, especially in a fancy place like Brooklyn Heights. Would be great to see this open the door to other dedications, maybe we’ll see a Scott La Rock park in the Bronx? Who knows.

News: The Roots “Things Fall Apart” LP Goes Platinum

The Legendary Roots Crew have been in the game for 20 years now. Before appearing on television nightly with Jimmy Fallon, The Roots toured endlessly around the world doing something close to 200 shows a year. In between hitting the road hard, the crew always found time to hit the studio to work on 10 albums.

14 years after releasing “Things Fall Apart” in 1999 The Roots Crew finally have a platinum album after their belt. Pretty amazing considering in 20 years, I can only remember one song “You Got Me” feat. Badu receiving any airplay on commercial radio.

I still have my copy of “Things Fall Apart” with the same cover art pictured above. Here’s some more info about the project.

The February, 1999 MCA Records release boasted two singles, including the Grammy Award-winning “You Got Me” featuring Erykah Badu and Eve, along with “The Next Movement,” which featured DJ Jazzy Jeff, along with The Jazzyfatnastees. The mainstream breakthrough LP from The Roots included extensive production from then-member Scott Storch and contributions from J Dilla (as Jay Dee). Guest emcees included Common, Mos Def, Beanie Sigel and Roots Crew mainstay affiliate Dice Raw.

Upon release, Things Fall Apart, which had five different album covers, debuted at #4. The other Roots album plaque belongs to 2002′s Phrenology, which is certified gold.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE ROOTS… Proof that if you keep building things don’t always fall apart.

Music: Jay Z & Common – Open Letter Part 2

Got a chance to check the Jay Z “Open Letter” joint about a week ago along with everyone else. I don’t keep up with the news much, so I didn’t even know Jay or the President were in Cuba, I mean it’s not like they brought a brotha no cigars back or nothing. HA.

I heard a lot of different feedback about it. I personally liked it. I didn’t dig too deep into it, hearing Jay talk his ish (which is what he does best) is alright with me.

I must say though I was SUPER surprised when I saw Common jump on this track for a lil remix action. Shouts to J. Period for coming through on this one. From the man who truthfully wants to rhyme like Common Sense, you’d think we would of heard something with these two in the past 10 years. I guess this is a good start though. Hopefully it leads to an official collaboration. Until then… Y’all gone learn today!

And it looks like I’m gone learn today too. The man who fought so hard to bring the Nets to Brooklyn is selling his portion of ownership in the team? Interested to see how this will play out. Until then, enjoy the music.

Congratulations: Public Enemy Inducted To Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Tonight

Salute to Chuck D, Professor Griff, Flavor Flav, Terminator X and the big homie DJ Lord. Tonight Hip Hop legends Public Enemy were inducted into the 28th Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Salute to Public Enemy for always making music true to their hearts. PE has never compromised their thoughts, ideas, and sound and it’s great to see them still able to tour the world to packed shows bringing the noise.

And to think back in the day, record labels, media, and many more said that Hip Hop would not last and it just a passing fad. Now it’s in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame with Beastie Boys, Run Dmc, Grandmaster Flash & Furious Five and now Public Enemy.

Listen to Chuck drop some jewels last year, after inducting Beastie Boys into the HOF.

I’ll be performing live on Tuesday April 30th at the Beat Society ATL edition. It’s going down at Xcess Ultra Lounge on Spring & 3rd. Also featuring performances by Torae, Rock Most, and a special guest.

Beat Society is the original showcase dedicated to the fine art of beat making. Producers on hand for the evening will be Kuddie Fresh, Ill Gainez, Brain Storm and Philly’s Own Hezekiah. DJ Sonny James on the wheels and Dres The Beatnik on the hosting duties. It’s also an 18 and up event for all my young heads. See you there. DOUG ANDERSON IS A BEAST!!! Nuff Said. He beasted the dunk contest so bad this year, they don’t even show the other dunks in the highlights. “Don’t believe me just watch!”

Thursday night at GA Tech’s newly opened Basketball stadium, Detroit’s Doug Anderson astounded the crowd with an amazing mix of dunks. Add on too that, HE DID NOT MISS ONE DUNK!! Truly, this was better than the NBA Slam Dunk contest. Can’t wait for D.A. to get drafted so we can see him light it up for All Star Weekend. Also check the footwork, Anderson rocks Jordan Cement 3 Retro’s for the occasion. The same kicks MJ won his 2nd slam dunk title in Chicago wearing over “The Human Highlight Film” Dominique.

This kicks off NCAA Final Four Weekend in ATL. Tons of concerts, games, and festivities. What you planning on getting into?

Well it’s almost April and it’s freezing cold in most of the U.S. No worries, here’s some new heat just in time to kick off your weekend.

I recently teamed up with long-time friend and fellow ATL Emcee/DJ/Producer Yamin Semali (Clan Destined) for a special remix. The track “Never Leave” along with it’s amazing video have been taking the internet and streets by storm. Infectious melodies, hard hitting drums, and clever lyrics are hard to deny.

I’ve known Yamin since we were both teenagers making a name for ourselves in the ATL underground Hip Hop scene. He’s an amazing artist, and it’s always a honor and a pleasure to work on music with someone who truly care’s about their craft.

News: Nike Basketball Now Open In Lenox Mall (ATL)

Nike just opened it’s first basketball brand experience retail space in ATL. Formerly the Nike Running Store in Lenox Mall, the store is now called “Nike Basketball” and opens just in time for March Madness and the 2013 Final Four which will be held in Atlanta next month. The space officially opened on March 15th with re-stocks of the Jordan Fire Red 5, Fighter Jet Foamposite, Jordan Thunder IV’s. News of the store opening spread quickly around the internet and by Friday morning nearly 100 people where lined up at it’s doors get a glimpse of the sight as well as to see what product would be in stock.

In addition to footwear, the store also carries plenty of Nike basketball college apparel, signature athlete footwear & apparel, a Nike I.D. studio where consumers can customize then order products, and even a Fuelband station in the center of the store. One of the things I thought was really cool is the wall when you enter the store. It’s shows you a history of Nike Basketball and does a great job of celebrating where the brand has been. When you reach the end of the wall it says “Create Your Future” and the world of Nike Basketball is at your palms. There’s also a chandelier made of Nike Basketballs hanging from the ceiling.

If you’re in Atlanta or planning to make a trip here in the near future, definitely stop by Nike Basketball in Lenox Mall to check it out. Basketball Never Stops!

Events: Prince & A Tribe Called Quest Secret Show @ SXSW

YEP! You read that right.

The South By Southwest (SXSW) music conference always has a few major surprises, but this year fans will get a rare treat as the legendary Prince is slated to headline an exclusive concert. This Saturday (March 16), Prince will close out Samsung’s SXSW festival and bringing along Hip-Hop legends A Tribe Called Quest for the ride, too.

The event is taking place at La Zona Rosa in downtown Austin as part of an innovative marketing strategy from Samsung. A randomly selected group of 250 Samsung users that participate in the tech company’s “Samsung Galaxy Experience” at the festival will get a chance to witness the iconic musician live. Attendees who have the coveted (and expensive) Platinum and Music badges for the festival will also gain exclusive entry to the private party.

CRAZY right?

Word is Prince will also be accompanied by a 22-piece band and will have a special stage remolded just for his show. Also hearing the rumble of Tribe on the road later this spring as they join the massive lineup for Yahoo’s On The Road tour featuring Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z, Frank Ocean, Nas and plenty others.

Looks like I’m gonna miss the show in Austin, but I’ll be looking forward to catching the Yahoo show for sure. Looks like brands are upping their budgets again. Let’s see what’s happens in 2013.

Movies To Check For: Iceberg Slim “Portrait Of A Pimp”

Been a minute since I left you with a movie to check for. Just found out, there’s a documentary about legendary pimp & author Iceberg Slim being shown in Atlanta. Directed by Jorge Hinojosa and produced by Ice T the film features interviews from Katt Williams, Birdman, Chris Rock, Snoop Dogg, Quincy Jones, and more.

There will be a screening via Atlanta Film Festival for the film this Tuesday 3.19 @ Plaza Theater on Ponce De Leon Ave. Check the flyer below for all the info.

Latest video from ATL emcee, DJ, and producer Rock Most. Track is called “Kill The Feed” and also features ATL’s own dynamic duo Clan Destined.

While this track appears on his last project “Rise And Shine,” Rock Most will be releasing a new EP entitled “RMFM – The Spring Collection” on April 3rd. f you’re in the city of Atlanta you can catch Rock Most DJing at the Glenwood (East Atlanta) on 3.22 and catch him perform at his annual Birthday Bash concert on Friday April 5th @ 529 EAV.
