Now this right here is what the world needs to be hearing on the commercial radio dial coming out of ATL. F.U.P.M. aka Fuck You Pay Me aka Stat Quo and Bobby Creekwater have been in the lab working on a new project. In case you forgot, Both emcees were signed to Eminem’s Shady Records imprint but never released albums. I always supported Stat Quo and felt he had what it takes to be the next big voice to be heard coming out of ATL. The homie Bobby Creek I’ve known since high school, and always proud of his movements as well as his consistency. So I’ve really liked the few collab records I’ve heard from these guys. Can’t wait to hear as well as see how the world responds to F.U.P.M. In the meantime check out their latest video for the song “Alright, Alright.”

One of my favorite songs from Pharoahe’s last album “W.A.R. (We Are Renegades) finally gets a visual. Check out the new video for “Still Standing” featuring Mela Machinko & Jill Scott.

On “Still Standing” Pharoahe raps about his on going battle with chronic asthma since childhood. A few years ago I found out how serious Pharoahe’s condition was. I went to a show he was supposed to be performing at, but he never took the stage. The word spread around that he suffered a serious asthma attack and was going to be un-able to perform. It’s very amazing as well that Pharoahe who has incredible breath control on the mic suffers from asthma.

“Still Standing” is an inspiring message for anyone going through something tough. No matter how rough it gets, don’t ever let life knock you down, you gotta keep standing tall! Check out the new video for yourself.

Art: Kaws Exhibit At High Museum Of Art (Atlanta)

Kaws is in ATL and he brought a LOT of art with him. A few months back I heard the news that Kaws would be coming to Atlanta to showcase his art. Not everybody you hear the words Kaws, Atlanta, and Museum in the same sentence, so I knew this would be an event not to miss.

If live in Atlanta and have been on Peachtree Street you may have noticed the 30 foot Kaws companion (passing through) statue. Kaws is holding a lecture this evening at 6pm (which has been sold out for a while) followed by the opening night party, which gives people a sneak peak at the exhibit before it officially launches this Friday. If your in ATL and into art this will be the place to be tonight.

KAWS started out as a grafitti artist. After moving to New York in the 90s, he made his mark (literally) by subverting imagery on billboards, bus shelters and phone booths. As KAWS popularity skyrocketed, his altered ads became wanted items. Through all of his projects, KAWS has successfully blurred the line between fine art and mass-produced merchandise. He uses his products to allow his imagery to infiltrate a larger audience than that of the fine art world. The artist is currently an active member in both the commercial and fine art communities.

Mixtape Mondays: Beatz & Lyrics 2 Go Mixtape

It’s finally here. The Beatz & Lyrics 2 Go project was recorded during the 7th annual A3C Hip Hop Festival (Oct 2011). The project was recorded between the on-site Unique Squared mobile tour bus as well as Salem Psalms studio. The process is the same every year. Emcees are sought after, they come through the lab in their downtime, you listen to beats (which you don’t know who the producer is) and you select one based on what you hear. You may end up choosing a production from someone you know, or you could end up working with a producer you’ve never heard of.

The project involves 35 MCs, 17 producers, 13 visual artists, four DJs, four videographers, three sound engineers, two executive producers, and a photographer. Besides the actual mixtape, they’ve produced accompanying artwork, an interactive photo flipbook (below), and an eventual documentary of the making of Beatz & Lyrics 2 Go: Vol. 2.

What’s also really FRESH, is that every song on the project was given the single treatment with it’s own artwork, clean, dirty, and instrumental. You can check me out on the song “Like You” along with 4-Ize and Headkrack. The track is produced by Illastrate.

Fresh Produce: Nike Black History Month 2012 Collection

I just got a chance to check out some pieces from the Nike Black History Month 2012 collection. I’m not quite sure how long Nike has been releasing product in celebration of BHM, but the first item I remember noticing is the Red/Black/Green Air Force One Low from 2006 that was never sold and only given to key influencers/tastemakers within the African American community. Since then I’ve been keeping an eye out, and every year Nike releases some great product that always tells a great story as well.

This year, Nike Sportswear and Nike Basketball are releasing limited-edition footwear and apparel that celebrates the achievements and pioneering spirit of three teams: the 1996 USA Basketball Women’s team, 2002 Brazil Men’s Soccer team and the 2008 Kenyan Long-Distance Running team. All three leave a legacy of greatness and continue to inspire and uplift their communities.

Lecture: Masters At Work RBMA San Fran 2012

Kenny Dope and Little Louie Vegas aka Masters At Work are like the Outkast of house music. Very different personalities, but the one thing they share in common is their love for making and playing music.

I got a chance to meet Masters At Work during the Red Bulll Music Academy activities in San Fran. I caught a picture with both Kenny Dope and Little Louie Vega but it near impossible to get a pic with both of them in it.

Their name says it all – Masters At Work. ‘Little’ Louie Vega and Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez celebrate 20 years together, channeling dance music down new paths with their inventive production style and imaginative feel for different musical forms. The two native New Yorkers have amassed an overwhelming body of work including hundreds of original productions and defiantly mix everything they can find – house, hip hop, funk, disco, Latin, African and jazz – into a universal groove. Food: Heinz Gets New Ketchup Packaging

Heinz unveils the new “Dip & Squeeze” ketchup packet. If you live in the south and have visited a Chick-Fil-A lately you have noticed the new ketchup packets, shaped like an actual ketchup bottle. This is Heinz new to go ketchup packaging, made so you can either dip into the ketchup or squeeze it out like you did in the past with the old packets. The new packaging is designed to be less messy and also provides you with 3 times more ketchup than the traditional packets. I’ve been fortunate to test these things out, the good people at Heinz hit me off with a LOT of samples. So much in fact friends in Atlanta are starting to call me the Ketchup King! HA.

Look for the new “Dip & Squeeze” packets to hit more restaurants as well as grocery stores in the near future.

I was on hand to witness history a few weeks ago in San Francisco. Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia reunited during a few days of Red Bull Music Academy events to highlight the Academy being in New York City this fall. As a BIG fan of the radio show, I was honored to hear stories of the show’s creation, what artist stretch & bob thought were going to be large and in charge, etc.

Dave Chapelle was in the building, a snapped a quick pic of him (Dave doesn’t really like taking pictures) on stage with Bobbito, then I danced until my clothes were sweated out and my knee was killing me! Bet you didn’t know Red Bull had a music academy or a radio station… doing BIG things. The station is CRAZY too. The Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito Show is the best hip hop radio show of all time, period. Broadcasting out of Columbia University’s WKCR every Thursday night from 1am to 5am between 1990 and 1998, Adrian “Stretch Armstrong” Bartos and Robert “Bobbito” Garcia launched the career of countless MC’s from the East coast, including Nas, The Notorious B.I.G, Big Pun, and Busta Rhymes to name but a few. With their witty commentary, razor-sharp mixing skills and obsessive passion for unearthing the next freshest beat and rhyme in the universe, they had fans around the world on lock and inspired generations of radio hosts to come. Big L and Jay-Z freestyling back to back? Check. Dubplates cut from demo tapes at Sugar Minott’s Brooklyn studio? Check. Legendary on-air phone calls with aspiring rappers? Check. The Red Bull Music Academy has toured the world for the past 15 years hitting spots like Rome, Seattle, Toronto, Melbourne, London, Barcelona, Madrid, etc. This year the Red Bull Music Academy will be bringing it back to the U.S. to be hosted in New York City this fall.

The Red Bull Music Academy is open to artists of all genres, musicians, producers, instrumentalists, engineers, DJ’s, etc. Every year 60 people are chosen from around the world to attend the academy. The goal is find musicians who are working to change the musical landscape of today as well as the future. News: The Kaos Effect Says Rest In Peace To Don Cornelius

DAMN! I must say I was in total SHOCK this morning when I woke up hearing the news that Soul Train founder and one of the coolest brothers on earth Mr. Don Cornelius was no longer with us. I was even more Shocked to hear that he took his own life. A 75 year old rich black man committing suicide? Doesn’t really sound right too me.

I hope Don is resting in peace, and we’ll send prayers to all his friends and fam. I’m honored to be a young brotha who got the chance to catch Soul Train while Don Cornelius was still hosting in the late 80′s/early 90′s. Check out this clip of Don putting the moves on Mary Wilson and then hitting the Soul Train line.

A true pioneer and visionary. He put African-Americans on TV and never sold out the culture. He created jobs, as well as memories that still live on 30 years later. He is the reason we still do the Soul Train line at every Wedding and Family Reunion today. We will never forget what you did for us Don. Until we see you again… Wish you much Love… Peace… And SOUL!!! R.I.P.

Last we spoke I told you I was headed to San Francisco (The Bay) for the Red Bull Music Academy 2012 meet up. This is where all the Mr/Ms X’s (Red Bull Music Academy Ambassadors) meet up, learn what’s happening for the year, network, as well as get a taste of what the Academy is like.

On my first night in Cisco, I got the chance to witness saxophonist Gary Bartz perform live at Yoshi’s. As soon as I walked into the spot I met Aloe Blacc who’s music I’ve really been enjoying lately. As I’m chilling by the bar none other than Kool Bob Love, Bobbito Garcia himself pops up.

Yoshi’s a fly sushi spot that hosts Jazz musicians in the front, but they also have an auditorium in the rear of the building. I had NO idea.

Once the show started you had Gary Bartz on the Sax and vocals. In addition, he had a Pianist who was getting BUSY, a drummer who kept it in the pocket and a bassist who kept the grooves thick as gravy. If that wasn’t enough singers Bilal and Aloe Blacc were special guests, who performed covers of some of Gary’s hits as well as Stevie Wonder covers, and some of their own material. Bilal lost a few cool points reading the lyrics to Stevie Wonder’s “You Will Know” but he made up for it later in the show. Aloe Blacc covered Gary’s “Celestial Blues” which was absolutely AMAZING! The three ended up on stage together at one point covering Coltrane’s “Love Supreme.” The show was CRAZY! I’m truly blessed to say I got a chance to witness that live.

The next day I got a chance to meet Gary Bartz and hear him speak about the history of his music, how he feels about Hip Hop artists sampling his music, as well as why he HATES the word “Jazz.” Check it out for your self. Shouts to Chairman Mao who conducted the interview.

ALSO.. In case you didn’t know the Red Bull Music Academy will be in New York City (NYC) this fall. The Red Bull Music Academy is open to ALL musicians, artists, DJ’s, producers, engineers, etc. It’s like a two week musical workshop where some of the coolest artists from around the world meet up, work on music together, network, as well as witness some amazing performances, and lectures. The applications will be available this Thursday, February 2nd. I’ll be sure to keep you posted on how you can get in where you fit in.

Video: Young Lyxx & Skyzoo “You Ain’t Heard” Behind The Scenes

Back around Thanksgiving the homie Skyzoo was in ATL. He rocked a show at Club 529 but earlier that day I saw tweets about him being in the Stankonia Studios (Outkast/Atlanta) working with Young Lyxx on something… What is done in the studio dark… shall come to light (at least you hope it works out like that HA). Looks like the two teamed up on a track called “You Ain’t Heard.” Here’s some behind the footage of the two recording the track. Video work by Cam Kirk, although I’m not sure who produced this track.

It’s interesting to see both emcees type / spit rhymes off their mobile phones. I wonder how this has affected the sales of Mead Composition Notebooks as it seems the ways of the rhyme book are going extinct… Check it out.

What’s really good party people. I recently made a trip out to the Bay Area to the great city of San Francisco. If you took New York City from the east coast and put it in California, added some mountains, some palm trees, and a BUNCH of hills… San Francisco is what you would get. I really had a good time out that way, and luckily I was able to take a few pictures to share from my travels. Things I saw: The Bay Bridge, Alcatraz Island (from afar), Hills, Haight & Ashbury (Birthplace of Hippies & Ben&Jerrys), random Year Of The Dragon things in Chinatown, and I even saw Dave Chapelle (no picture though).

I was in the Bay for Red Bull Music Academy meetings, and events. Saw shows with Gary Bartz, Bilal, Aloe Blacc, Blu & Exile, Stretch & Bobbito, and Masters At Work. I’ll be posting more pics in other posts, but for now check these out.

Today is January 10th which can only mean one thing! The “Executive Suite” album is here and available for FREE download.

A few months back I was reached out to by Kareem Fort to be interviewed for his DEMO’s documentary which is about independent artists. Afterwards I was approached about jumping on this record with Chaundon which was to be featured on the Demo’s movie soundtrack. Events: Señor Kaos & Ultra Beast Invade Birmingham

This past Friday night (Jan 6th), me, 4-ize and the Bodega Brovas trooped out to Birmingham, Alabama for a live performance at the Bottle Tree Cafe. Shouts to the good folks at Lobotomix for holding us down and making sure things were straight. The Bottle Tree is a real nice venue that serves as restaurant int the day / venue at night. As far as the food goes the sweet potato french fries were jamming. As far as the venue goes the space is nice and the sound was crispy!

Me and 4-Ize performed a special Ultra Beast set which we rocked for about 40 minutes. I ran thru some of the records from “The Kaos Effect” and he ran through some joints from his latest project “Attack Of The Sea Monkeys,” before we linked later in the set to knock out collab records. Shouts to all the ladies who came out, and to the two young ladies who kept buying us shots of Jaegermeister like they were trying to get us pregnant. HA.

(Backstory): A couple songs into the set 4-Ize announced on the mic “I need somebody to bring me some Jaegermeister!” Like 3 minutes later we were being handed two shots, and I thought that was it. 5 minutes later the young ladies come back with more shots, 10 minutes go buy and more shots!
