If you’re in the market for a Kindle Cover make sure you check out the Cole Haan Kindle Covers. Most of them have either a 4 or 5 star rating from purchasers. Go here to check out the Cole Haan Covers: Cole Haan Kindle Covers

I purchased the Amazon Kindle Leather Cover for myself for my Kindle 2 and I had an M-Edge cover for my Kindle 1 but I’m seriously thinking about getting a Cole Haan cover once I purchase my next Kindle (or maybe I’ll just get another cover for my Kindle 2).

Anyway, check out the Cole Haan Kindle Covers and I’m sure you’ll be happy with what you see.

I chose to get the Amazon Kindle DX Leather Cover (same as I bought for the Kindle 2).

I like the fact that it latches right to the Kindle DX so there’s almost zero chance that it will come apart. I also liked that way that my Kindle 2 cover felt in my hands and this cover feels basically the same way. The leather is not the greatest looking quality of leather that I’ve ever seen but I’m still very happy with the Amazon Cover.

There are a lot of other great covers available such as the M-Edge Covers and the Neoprene Covers so even if you’re not a fan of the Amazon cover there’s plenty more styles and colors to choose from.

One of the biggest expenses of going to college is the way overpriced textbooksthat you’re required to purchase. I’ve always had a problem with this, mainly because the publishers know that you must buy the book so they just charge an outrageous amount for the book. I always tried to get used books but this didn’t always work out because the publishers would come out with new editions almost every year which would make the used books obsolete. So what are we to do to save money on textbooks?

At first glance it seems as though the Kindle DX for $489 is just another huge college expense and what’s the point of spending so much just to have an electronic reader for college.

The reality is that the books that you can buy for your Kindle DX are at a significant savings from the prices that you would pay at the college bookstore - anywhere from 10 - 15% savings - most of the major textbook publishers are signed up with Amazon. This may not seem like a lot but with some books well over $100 you could be saving $20 to $30 per book. These savings can add up very quickly and over the course of four years of college not only pay for the Kindle DX but you can probably even come out ahead in the end.

For those of you that think the $489 is pretty steep you can always hold out a little while and purchase a used DX. And if you’re just not sold on the whole idea of electronic readers for school you can save quite a bit just by getting your textbooks from Amazon. Go here to find good deals on textbooks: Good deals on textbooks

Good news for iPhone Kindle App users. Version 1.1 has now been released by Amazon with a few cool new features. To update to version 1.1 all you need to do is go to the app store and you can update there. Here is a run down of some of the new features on version 1.1.

Amazon has launched a iPhone optimized version of the Kindle Store. This has been integrated into the application.

You can turn pages by tapping the screen.

There are now three different color schemes which should make reading on the iPhone a little bit easier on you eyes since the iPhone is back lit and does not use the e-ink technology. You can use different background and text colors. For instance, you can use white text on black background or grey text on white background.

You can now zoom in and pan images

You can read your books in landscape now - just tilt your iPhone. You can lock in portrait or landscape using the padlock icon in the lower right.

These are all nice improvements that we’re glad to see. I’ll let you know of any future Kindle iPhone app updates so stay tuned.

This review is based on information about the Kindle DX that is currently available. This newest Kindle will ship during the summer (no date yet update: Kindle DX started to ship on 6/10/09) and will cost $489. Pre-order the Kindle DX here - it will be available on a first come, first serve basis.

The Kindle DX will come in very handy for those that like to read newspapers on their Kindle’s since it has a 9.7 inch screen compared to the 6 inch screen of the Kindle 2. It will also be nice for students for reading textbooks and also has built-in PDF support. If you’re looking for something more compact and are just interested in reading paperbacks electronically, the Kindle 2 is still your best bet.

Here are the positives for the Kindle DX:

Very slim - just 1/3 of an inch, about the same size as most magazines.

Large 9.7 inch e-ink screen with 16 shades of gray for crisper pictures - good for newspapers and textbooks.

Built in PDF reader - a big improvement over the first two Kindles

Read to Me - this is nice as long as the authors leave this feature available

Still a huge selection of books - over 275,000 just from Amazon plus over 1 million from other sources.

3G wireless network lets you download books anywhere. No monthly fees and no searching for wi-fi hot spots.

Full image zoom. Images can be zoomed to the full 9.7 inch size of the screen.

Adjustable text size which is nice for those that like larger or smaller text.

You can read for days without recharging. Just remember to turn off the wireless feature when you’re not using it and you’ll be able to read for a longer period of time without recharging.

Magazines, newspapers and popular blogs are all available and much easier to read now with the larger screen.

Search feature. This allows you to search for any text within a book, your library, the Kindle store or on the web.

You can download over 60,000 audio book titles including best sellers.

Auto rotating screen - a nice new feature that allows you to rotate from portrait to landscape which is nice for reading graphs, charts, maps, etc.

Large amount of storage - you can now hold up to 3,500 books on the Kindle DX.

Built in dictionary and wikipedia access.

Many of the major textbook publishers on now going to make their books available on Kindle.

Pre-order the Kindle DX here

There are quite a few pros for the Kindle DX and it looks like it is going to be a good device for those who could use some of it’s new features but there are also some cons too.

Kindle DX cons:

The price. $489 is a lot of money for most of us and quite an increase over the $359 price tag for the Kindle 2 which, by the way, is one of the reasons that many people haven’t purchased any Kindle so far.

No color. This may or may not be a con since the e-ink technology may not work well with a color screen. I do like how easy e-ink is on the eyes but it would also be nice to be able to view pictures in color.

Still no folders. Not sure what the problem is here. This is one of the biggest negatives of all of the Kindles and it is one of the features that users want the most but Amazon still hasn’t addressed this issue.

No touch screen. Once again, this may or may not be a negative based on the fact that e-ink and touch screen technology aren’t compatible yet. As already mentioned, I do like the e-ink but touch screen would also be nice so hopefully they’re working on a way to combine the two technologies.

While the large 9.7 inch screen is nice it makes the device itself rather large and cumbersome - not the easiest thing to carry around and store.

We finally have all the winners for the April Kindle Cover contest/drawings. Sorry that it’s taken so long to get this posted this month but between myself being very busy with the kids and potential contest winners not getting back in touch with me I’m getting this post out a few days later than normal.

So, here are the contest winners for April:

Gina from New Hampshire and David from New York were the winners of the M-edge/$50 gift card drawings and they both chose the $50 gift cards.

Yin from Florida and Pat from New York were the winners of the Bobarra Kindle covers.

Don’t forget the rules for the May contest have changed a little bit so go here to see what you need to do to win this months contest: New Contest Rules

Once again here’s the reason that I’ve changed the rules up a little bit. This is from the April Newsletter:
“Just to let you know, I’m doing this for a couple of reasons. Number one, I think it’s more fair to give regular readers and visitors a better chance to win the contest. Two, I just didn’t like the fact that the winner was chosen by luck.”

So, you will have to do a little bit of work to win the contest but it’s not much at all. Don’t forget to keep checking if the trivia questions have been posted - so far I haven’t posted one yet this month but I have a feeling that one may be coming soon.
