To limit concussions and other injuries, Texas is moving toward
limiting contact during football practice to 90 minutes per week.
You can read about that here.
It’s an interesting move coming from the state where high school
football is king and it shows how things are changing in the
sport.
The WIAA approved new rules for summer practices in the spring. It came in
response to an amendment that would ban helmets during the
offseason in an effort to eliminate contact and decrease
concussions.
I was at the WIAA winter coalition meeting in March where the
summer practice amendment was discussed. I heard some of the
discussion and the state coaches association knows change to their
sport is coming and they’re hoping to be out in front on the issue
before others change their sport for them.
It’s going to be interesting to see how this issue moves. If Texas
is willing to make these changes, it could just be the first domino
toward the rest of the states.
And if this is the way the sport is going, how will the sport
evolve? Will it change the on-field product? Will it dramatically
alter how many are injured in the sport? How will the higher levels
of the sport evolve?

There were so many records broken by West Sound track and field
athletes — and some I’m just catching up with — in the last few
weeks, I wanted to recap.
Let’s start with North Mason’s CJ Allen. He broke the Class 2A
state meet record and lowered his West Sound record in the 300
hurdles. Allen ran a 37.28 in Friday’s prelims. The old record was
37.79. It was also the best time in the state this season.
Allen broke the West Sound record earlier this season. It was held
by Central Kitsap’s Dom Demouchet at 37.82.
He was close to the West Sound record in the 110 hurdles. South
Kitsap’s Roger Cooper, who made to a couple NFL training camps
after a successful career at Montana State, holds the record at
14.14. Allen ran a 14.34.
Reagan Colyer broke her West Sound record in the 100 hurdles at
14.88 at districts. In the 300 hurdles, she was faster than the
Class 2A state meet record, but was second place. The 43.44 lowered
her own West Sound record of 43.56 set last season.
Central Kitsap’s Michael Thomas lowered his West Sound record in
the 400 with a 47.83. There’s been an assault on that record this
year as Thomas, Allen and South Kitsap’s LaForrest Church have all
beaten it.
The previous record was a hand-timed 49.0 (49.24 converted) set by
Jeff Ellison of East Bremerton in 1977 and Scott Christensen or
Port Angeles in 1966.
Church anchored South Kitsap’s 4×400 relay which broke the West
Sound record at 3:18.39 (along with Adam Gascoyne, Zach Sleigh and
Mason Villarma). A South Kitsap team from 1988 had run a 3:20.05.
Church (1:51.82) was also close to the 800 record.
Central Kitsap’s Rose Christen broke the West Sound record in the
800 at the district meet at 2:10.24. That breaks the record of Port
Angeles’ Penny Graves, who ran a 2:10.98 in 1983. She was also
close to the 1,600 record (4:53.91).
Central Kitsap (Destiny Dunbar, Keyera Gaulden, Kendra Fields,
Jasmine Leaptrot) broke the record in the 4×200 relay in 1:43.76 at
the Narrows League meet. It beat the Central Kitsap team that
posted a 1:43.82 in 1991.
Correction: This post originally indicated that CK’s had broken the
girls 4×100 relay record with a 48.88. North Kitsap still holds the
record with the 48.49 set two year ago.
Also, Olympic sprinter Zach Smith was omitted. Smith ran a 21.60 at
the state meet, one of three runners to go under the Class 2A state
meet time. Smith beat the 1978 record set by Bremerton’s Jerome
Walker. Walker ran a hand-time 21.6, which converts to a 21.9.
All told, that’s eight record broken this season.
Here’s a look at the updated West Sound record book:
