I’m heading off to Pasco, the site of the state cross country meet. It should be a big year for local runners, as I pointed out in this story. Besides Kitsap dominance, there’s another interesting story line coming out of Pasco. This could be the end of Spokane’s run. Teams from the Greater Spokane League have won the team title (and most of the individual titles) in the big-school meet every year since 1988. Jackson of Mill Creek is No. 1 in the nation. Ferris of Spokane is No. 9. Should be quite a showdown.

The West Central District Class 3A/2A/1A swimming and diving meets, as well as the SeaKing District 2 meet, are Friday and Saturday.

The 2A/1A meet is in our own backyard at Olympic High School on Saturday only. The meet includes teams from North Mason, Kingston, Klahowya, Port Townsend and Sequim from the Olympic League; and Eatonville, Fife and Steilacoom from the Nisqually League. It begins at 10 a.m. with the swimming prelims, diving finals at 12:30 p.m. and swim finals at 4 p.m.

North Mason’s Kimberly Wascher won a state title in the backstroke as a sophomore and would like to add another title in her final year. She has already qualified for state in the back, and is the top seed. Wascher is also the top seed in the 50 free and qualified for state.

The top two finishers earn automatic allocations to state.

Admission for adults and students without ASB cards is $7, senior citizens $5, and elementary-age children are $4.

For the 3A WCD meet, you’ll have to head a bit further to Renton and Hazen pool. The meet begins Friday at 10 a.m. with the diving prelims, and 5 p.m. for swim prelims. Saturday’s finals are at 3 p.m. Olympic League teams include Bremerton, Olympic, North Kitsap and Port Angeles, as well as teams from the South Puget Sound League, Seamount and Western Cascade.

The top six finishers earn berths to state. Local swimmers that should do very well include Bethany Aban of North Kitsap, who is seeded second in the 100-yard butterfly, and is third heading into the 100 breaststroke. Jordan LaHaie and Danielle Nelson of Olympic could also factor into their respective events as well.

Admission for adults and students without ASB cards is $7, students with cards, senior citizens and children under 12 are $4.

Bainbridge will be at the SeaKing meet Friday and Saturday. The diving prelims are at Juanita HS Friday at 10 a.m., while the swim prelims are at Mary Wayte Pool at Mercer Island at 4:30 p.m. Saturday’s fnals are at 5:30 p.m. at Mercer Island.

The top four earn automatic berths to state.

The state swimming and diving meet is Nov. 13-14 at King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
