Always on the search for a new signature scent, I realized recently that I craved something just slightly out of my comfort zone. I'm constantly evolving, so why aren't my fragrance choices?

As a kid, despite being born without a sweet tooth, I was fascinated by Astronaut Ice Cream. GUCCI Bloom Eau de Parfume - Tickled Pink

Bold floral notes hit you right out of the gate. But it's not your usual on-the-nose blossoms that've been remixed for years. This is completely new and innovative.

Tuberose harvested from India delivers sweet, complex and exotic notes while Jasmine takes on a completely new identity, thanks to "an exclusive method of co-extraction" of the bud, releasing a redolence of fresh green and petal.

Held on the 18th floor of the Intercontinental Hotel in partnership with with Entertainment One's TIFF Lounge, the suites were abuzz with celebrities, media and influencers getting ready. Audrey Hyams Romoff, president and owner of OverCat, understands that we're on the go non-stop for ten days and not having to fuss over makeup, hair and nails ourselves isn't just a huge help and timesaver, but a much-need, much-appreciated pampering during one of the most frenzied times of year.

- Solid Gold

Sophie Evans isn't just a tanner to the stars (Sophie Turner, Hugh Jackman, Margot Robbie, Victoria Beckham, Bella Hadid, Kate Moss, to name just a few) for red carpets - Oscars, Emmys, you name it. She's been seeing my naked bod for years now and never snickers or points out my flaws. She only exudes warmth and love, and well, when you're stripped down to a single pair of thin, barely-there paper panties, it's everything. She's also kind enough to add contouring, giving me a lovely six-pack and adding definition where there is only jelly. In other words, she's kindness from head to toe, without a single judgmental bone in her body. She also happens to be damn funny, smart, and beautiful, to boot, and the best tanner in the biz.

This was the first lie-down sesh I’d done with her (Usually it’s done in a tent with a spray gun). As you can imagine, I love talking with Sophie. She travels a ton and always has interesting tales to tell. We talk about food, film, fashion, politics - the whole gamut. So we’re talking away, catching up, when all of a sudden I feel sandpaper rip up and down my leg. Holy #%@! Sophie zips an exfoliator up and down my gams while describing the latest doc that’s captured her attention. It’s all very quick, just a few seconds long, and then on goes the sumptuous tanner.

She’s decided to go pretty dark this time around since I don’t have much of a tan going. She deep dives, getting right in between my toes (thankfully she thinks my feet are very soft), under my arms, all around my Kardarshian-sized backside, and ahem, 'round the front. It's a dirty job, but boy does she do it well. The deep colour is brown, never orange, and nary a streak anywhere. It's also not going to disappear overnight, so I've got about five days to rock this bronzed bod. I'll be up to here in sequin dresses and strappy heels covering TIFF events for the next week, so you best believe I'll be showing this golden glow off.

I look like I just got back from a long vacay in Barbados. Gorgeous.

As always, Sophie's made me look and feel like a million bucks. She is simply the best, inside and out.

- All That Glitters is Gold

As you know Stila is one of my favourite cosmetic lines of all-time (see below for my recommendations), so getting a pro to apply the glowy products properly is very exciting for me, as I'm so bad at it. I wouldn't ever go near anything glitter on my own. Quel désastre.

Isabel begins with my beloved Stay All Day 10-in-1 HD Beauty Balm. When I remark on how much I love it and have relied on it for years, she recommends I try it in a different shade. Mind blown. Of course, how could I not see it? This is just one of the many reasons makeup artists are so vital. In addition to learning where to set blush on my cheeks (I have a weird Scandinavian mug that unless a professional wields the brush,I seem to appear in 2D), she set me straight on a bazillion things I was doing wrong. She is one of the many MUAs who works in-store at beautyBOUTIQUE by Shoppers Drug Mart, so go get yourself a makeover. The tutorial alone with change everything, not to mention you look so good, date night just got moved up to mid-week.

She covers me in Kitten everything because it delivers a delicious, warm and inviting lustre instead of disorienting, bewildering unicorn/disco ball glare: Heaven's Hue Highlighter applied with Wonder Brush, and new product Magnificent Metals Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow in Kitten Karma, which is the best glitter shadow I’ve ever tried.

Lips get Stay all Day Liquid Lipstick in Fiore, which later people deem "my" colour.

I pass on getting DUO lashes. Because I wear glasses, I always feel like it's a lot of effort for something that won't get noticed. But she convinces me otherwise. Isabel wears specs too (so similar to mine, with her blonde hair and light eyes, we could be mistaken for sisters). She applies them with ease and covers them in HUGE Extreme Lash Mascara to really amp things up. She was right. I never wear them IRL, but wow - I could get used to this. They look completely natural but with added emphasis. Think: padded bra for the eyes. Oomph.

I haven't been able to see much without my glasses, so I put them on for the final reveal. It's astonishing the difference a professional makes. I am not just camera ready, and not just HD either, but 4K close-up primed and prepped. I close my eyes and say a small prayer: If I'm ever going to run into an ex, please let it be today.

I realize I forgot to put on perfume before I left the house. I wear perfume every day so I feel naked without it. She takes me over to a display of Gucci Bloom Eau de Parfum, spins me around, and spritzes away. Heavenly doesn't begin to cover it (Stay tuned for a closer look soon).

We take cute selfies in an adjacent room, then I head over to hair and nails. I may be leaving soon, but the tips she gave me are for LIFE. Thank you Isabel, for upping my game.

- Tressed for Success

Anna styled my hair last year and made me feel like a ROCKSTAR, so of course I couldn’t wait to put myself in her hands. Added bonus: she’s great to talk to as she’s also a MUA and food-obsessed.

She decides to go in softer direction this year - sweeping, tousled layers that fall gently around my face. Sigh. I look like royalty with a teeny bit of edge. Love. It. And she did it in just minutes.

- Nailed It

Melissa is a very in-demand nail artist in the city. She works at a salon in the east end, and is called on to do big runway shows and magazine shoots. Anyone who’s anyone sees her. She also happens to be a hoot. Spending time with Melissa is like catching up with an old friend you haven't seen for awhile - it's non-stop talking, laughing and commiserating.

Roughly 80 per cent of the crowd's choosing pastels, but I am looking for something more dramatic. Plus, I've been knee-deep in pale, confectionary hues these past few months. I could do with a change.

She chooses a dark red and it’s the best manicure I’ve ever had. She also manages to do it in less than 20 minutes. And here’s the thing - my nails were in the worst shape of my life. For the last few months, they’d cracked, peeled and basically fallen apart despite various lotions, oils, serums, and intensive repair systems. And yet, in Melissa's hand, they were the picture of perfection. To say that she works miracles is an understatement.

If you've been reading the knack for awhile, you'll know I'm obsessed with all things Australia. Everything - their clothes, food, wine, architecture, TV shows, stationery, decor, lifestyle, and of course skincare. In fact, no one does skincare better because they put such an emphasis on all-natural - and almost always organic - ingredients and never forgets powerful sun protection either, at no added cost.

When I stumbled across Eco Tan online, I knew I'd discovered something big.

- Eco by Sonya Driver Coconut Deodorant

Coconut oil deodorant? Genius! After all, coconut oil is a natural skin softener and has antibiotics built right in.

It's not often that a natural deodorant comes in a roll-on (sticks are more common), so application couldn't be faster or easier - just one swipe'll do it. Lightweight and invisible, you'll forget you've even got it on.

The warm, unisex coconut oil scent - created with coconut, chamomile and lavender essential oils - is pleasing and only noticeable when first applied.

Free of synthetic ingredients, parabens and aluminium, the formula allows toxins to be released naturally, instead of harmfully blocking them, making it ideal for those with sensitive skin.

And it works. There are however, a few things to be aware of:

- Thanks to organic corn flour, you'll stay dry and fresh, but so if you're looking for something to stop the sweat, this isn't it. Don't confuse it for antiperspirant.

- Speaking of sweat, I tried it out at the gym. Whether I'm hitting the mat, weights, or machines, I go hard: wring-out-the-Lycra hard. It did not work for me in this scenario. I found out the hard way while in line ay the grocery store after a particularly intense sesh. I was red-faced for more reasons than one. But that's on me. I pushed too far, too hard, too fast.

Bonus #1: For those of us whose wardrobes are rooted in inky tones, you don't have to worry about white smears or smudges. Sweeet.

Bonus #2: It doesn't sting when applied after shaving. Even sweeter.

- Eco Tan Cacao Tanning Mousse

I've tested a ton of self-tanners (being so pale, it's a must) and I've never had one like this before. This the first one featuring aloe vera. You know how good your skin feels when you slather it straight on? Expect that same nourishing experience, even though you eventually wash it off in the shower. Trust me, that pampered, soft, smooth skin isn't going anywhere.

There are two choices of level of tan:

1. One hour delivers a medium to deep shade
2. Four hours gets you dark just-come-back-from-holiday colour.

I tried the express one hour first. Directions: Apply, wait one hour, then shower to reveal a deep bronze colour. Using a self-tanning mitt, application could not have been easier. Seriously, I am so pale that any mishaps definitely show, but the thin lotion went on like a dream. As light as air, it dries quickly with the slightest tacky feel for a little bit, then evaporates - whoosh. It took mere seconds.

After an hour, I hopped in the shower. Towelling off afterwards, there was nary an orange streak on any my fluffy white towels. Well, surely the sheets would be a mess by tomorrow or the next day. That's just part of do-it-yourself temporary lotions. But not a trace. Impressive doesn't even begin to cover it.

My new sun-kissed glow makes such a difference to my toothpaste-coloured complexion and overall well-being. There's just something about a bit of "sun" that makes you look and feel better. And all without any harmful UVA/UVB rays to boot.

Cacao Tanning Mousse also boasts the best scent EVER - warm mocha with a hint of caramel, and not the slightest bit sweet. It's almost impossible to not get a whiff of "self-tanner smell" these days, but Eco's Tan's not having any of it. Instead, enjoy the tropical warmth of cacao, coffee, blood orange, grapefruit, ginger and mandarin. You can practically feel the warm sun on your shoulders, soft sand beneath your feet.

Now I just have to figure out a time to apply it and wait 4-6 hours for a deep tan. because going into winter with dark golden limbs? That's the stuff dreams are made of.

Niki Kingsmill Fine Art & Illustration - Down to a Fine Art

Last year for my birthday, my best friend Zoe gave me one of the best cards ever - a stunning watercolour of a tropical, yet still sophisticated cocktail. Needless to say, I hugged her until she couldn't breathe, and then promptly framed and hung the pretty print.

What's more remarkable however, is I've been a fan of Niki Kingsmill's incredible fine art and illustration for years and Z. had no idea.

Niki's propensity for food and drink items of course instantly captured my heart. But her other subjects - house portraits, household items and iconic objects (Moka Pot, Converse, Chanel Bottle, Pink Satin Heels, Kitchen Aid Mixer and Ball Mason Jar) - are just as compelling. I mean, I've been obsessed with Lee Broom Lighting and his Clear Crystal Bulb for years, and she captured it perfectly.

Her gentle watercolours are realistic with just a smidge of whimsy added. There's a sentimentality to her work (Blanket, Cozy Cat, and Paint My Canada, for example), and often humour, like Oh, Baby! Nice Buns, and Holiday Spam cards/prints, making them ideal presents.

And check out her amazing renditions of Frida Khalo and Vincent Van Gogh. So cool and modern, the young 'uns will think they're relations!

Niki's got an eye for detail too. Her exquisite pen work can be seen in pieces such as Motorcycles the Octopus.

As someone who sends cards as much as humanly possible, I've already hand-selected a bunch for friends, fam and colleagues. Prints too. Greeting cards are left blank inside, so you can personalize them to the person and occasion. Prints (available in 8"x10" and 11"x14") are accompanied with backboard to keep them sturdy and flat. The 120lb silk-coated stock paper Niki uses has a lovely weight and finish, and everything's printed and assembled in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

TIFF 2017 Survival Guide - The Essentials

Whether you're a film lover, fashionista or press like me, the next 10 days can be brutal. Especially if you're covering TIFF and TFW - Toronto Fashion Week.

Since I've been at this for years, I've come to count on a little survival kit that helps get me through the early mornings and late nights (one party invite lists the arrival time at 11:59pm because that's just how Harvey Weinstein, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland, Nicholas Hoult, Katherine Waterston, et al. roll.

I thought I'd share it to help first timers (or those just generally already wrung out by the frenzy that the beginning of September) get through. It also works for any type of short travel, long day, etc.

Here's what you need:

- Water, Coconut Water, etc.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. All this running around, sitting in bone dry rooms sucks the life outta you, including any moisture, so glug back as much water as you can.

This will also benefit you with all those cocktails, extended 4am calls, and endless glasses of champers you down at the bar while voraciously scanning the room for Charlie Hunnam.

- Portable snacks

Despite being a full-time restaurant writer, it seems I've barely eaten and the week's just getting started. Any kind of nuts are great, energy bars, coconut chips, that kind of thing [I scarfed down the bag of Hungry Buddha Coconut Chips I found in my Bask-It-Style by GLO Communications bag from their media event this week. Not only are the freakin' delicious (I had Cheeky Chocolate), half the bag is only 120 calories, so when I polished off the whole thing, I didn't feel so bad. And, it got me through the entire day (dinner didn't happen 'til 10pm)].

I don't recommend produce as you are going to be jostled and jammed in all types of crowds. Hand-held foods that you can eat while on the move or standing are good too. Hot dogs, pizza and other fast food are bound to happen, so don't freak out that you can't down a salad while crossing town. You will get back on track. In ten days or so.

- Comfortable shoes

This one's a biggie, so pay attention. No matter how long you think you can withstand wearing your heals, think again. Like a 9-hour wedding celebration, you're going to be on your feet longer than you think. You'll also walk farther than you plan, so bring along a pair you can actually wear when you're not taking a selfie with Idris Eldra, Allison Janney, or Ruth Wilson.

- As many phones as you can get your hands on

I'm serious. Hundo p serious. On a regular day i charge my iPhone two to three times, my laptop at least twice, and my iPad once. And that barely gets me by. How the hell am I supposed to keep it on lock all day? You don't want to have the opportunity to get a pic with Jason Sudeikis or Jennifer Lawrence and have your phone die. Crumple.

Just as important - make sure to bring the coordinating cables and chargers for each. You're gonna need 'em.

-Tissues

In case you're stuck in a cold room and your nose starts to run. In case you need to blot your makeup. In case you catch a sad flick. Trust me, they'll always come in handy.

And it's amazing to be able to offer one to someone in need. "Here you go, Julianne Moore."

-Duffle/tote bag

Whatever kind of bag is up to you - just make sure it's super light and can hold a lot. You never know what people are going to give you and now you've got somewhere to put your sweater/jacket if it gets too hot (and you thought a SoulCycle class made you sweat). Lifesaver.

- Travel wallet (or something for passes, tickets, booklets, receipts, and other assorted paper you'll be loaded down with)

You know those wallets the size of Montana meant to keep your passport and tix in? They're perfect for the full on day you're about to have, where you have to show credentials to everyone a thousand times. Sure you're wearing a badge, but trust me, this will make the whole process as efficient and smooth as checking in can be.

- Business cards

A couple of years ago, someone told me they were done and I was idiotic for still using them, but I'm telling you - it's the fastest way to give your number to someone and everyone still does it. I was at a fashion show yesterday and not one person asked for my IG handle, but everyone wanted a card.

If you have 'em, stock up. If you don't, get some this minute. And believe me, they don't have to be pricey or on expensive paper- yesterday a publisher (he works in paper!) took my card and said, "Wow, fancy," while obsessively caressing it.

- Gum/mints

Because if you mowed down on a hot dog before showtime, and you find yourself face to face with director Luca Guadagnino, you don't want to be the one he refers to later as "the one that smelled like sauerkraut."

- Breathe

I see so many people completely lose it by day two. Take a moment to remember:

- how cool it is to be here

- how fortunate that this is considered a "work" day for you

- this is so much fun, no matter how much running around or lack of sleep takes place.

You already know the story - I've been colouring/bleaching my locks for decades now. So long in fact, even my family forgets I'm not a natural blonde.

I've never seen or used a more bizarre looking tool in my life than the Ashley Black FasciaBlaster.

The arm's length hard plastic white rod, with beautiful coppery dipped ends, is lined in what appears to be four old-fashioned faucets (the four-pronged kind usually found on old porcelain sinks and clawfoot tubs).

What do you do with it exactly? Take the rod and rub the faucet-like claws across your skin to break up fascia - your body’s connective tissue. There are actually four types of fascia in that gorgeous bod of yours, and this is the only self-treatment handheld tool designed to tackle them all.

Vivacious founder, inventor and fascia expert Ashley Black recommends that you oil up before hand, and I couldn't agree more. It will slide as smooth as silk, instead of scraping and bumping across your skin like an army Jeep off-roading. And body lotion doesn't work nearly as well.

As per the instructions you should see an red blotch on your skin after use. Trust me, this is a good thing.

Jewelicious, Inc. - You've Gotta Have Faith

Sometimes an object is bigger than it appears.

That's what happened when I first discovered Jewelicious, Inc. Instead of everyday, ho-hum jewelry slipping out of the pretty envelope, strong messages from a strong woman appeared, and I was forever changed.

First I noticed the striking lines and superior quality of the pieces. Then I became aware of something else. The statement bangle made me feel powerful and yet simultaneously protected somehow.
