Wood Burning kits are inexpensive and supply you everything you need to create a really neat gift in time for Mother's Day. Wood Burning Kits will come with a few pieces of wood plaques, stencils and the wood burning gun needed to create a one of a kind gift. If you like, you can use or create your own stencil on wood pieces that are also available in the craft section.

I found this neat keepsake card /photo box and used a picture of my son to create a gift for my Mother-in-law for Mother's Day.

In addition to the picture that I used of my son, I found a neat stencil also in the craft section to create the boots and the stars. I copied the picture of my son and used the copy to trace the picture onto the wood box. Once I was done burning in all of the parts, I then used a light stain on the edges, the back and the inside of the box. After the stain dried, I then used a water based acrylic clear coat with a satin finish.

This box was a lot of fun to make and my Mother-in-Law loved it. Total cost was about $28 dollars including the wood burning kit which I have been able to use for several years since to create more fun projects and special gifts!! The entire project only took a few hours, I did let the stain dry for approximately two hours and the clear coat to dry and set over night. I used a light piece of sand paper to smooth the clear coat then wiped with a damp cloth to create the finished effect.

Handmade Gifts From the Heart

There are lots of creative ways to show someone you care and a new trend is the art of #wood burning. Wood burning is an easy skill that with a little practice can turn into a fun hobby.

There are several ways you can create special wood gifts, memory boxes, decorative plaques, custom portraits and hundreds of other creative ideas made from wood.

How to Make a Wood Burned Plaque

Tools And Instructions:

Clear Coat - Satin Spray

Paint Brush

Thin Cloth

You will want to find a stencil or picture that you would like to make as a personalized gift. You can choose from many ideas that will be a personalized gift for that special someone. You can find stencils online or make your own from a picture of any kind.

Make your stencil to fit the size of your basswood plaque, you can download and print stencils easily if you have access to a printer and a computer.

Choose your wood plaque, basswood is the easiest wood to burn. Above plaque is a 5" x 7" piece of Basswood with a staggered edge. You will want to sand your plaque and make it as smooth as possible. Make sure after sanding that you remove the sawdust with a paint brush or a damp towel.

Apply stain to the back and the border of your plaque. You will want to use a thin cloth to apply stain and rub it in. Sometimes using a small paint brush on the edge lets you apply the stain much easier then you can blend and work it into the wood with the cloth. Once you have achieved the level of stain you desire, inspect the raw front surface of your wood and use a piece of light grade sand paper to remove any excess of stain that may have gotten onto the front surface of your plaque. Remove sawdust after sanding.

Cut your stencil and a piece of graphite paper to the size of wood plaque if necessary and tape them onto the wood. Use your pencil to trace and outline the stencil. Remove the stencil and graphite paper and inspect your template. If it appears to dark and heavy use a light grade of sand paper or the eraser to smooth and lighten the tracing lines. Remove sawdust and eraser debris.

Set your wood burning pen to the recommended setting. Some wood burning pens only have one setting. Use the small pen type of tip for outlining and darker border lines for your picture and the shading tip for filling in these areas once outlined. (Wood burning pens and kits can be found online and in retail or craft stores) Check the heat of the pen on a scrap piece of wood to make sure it is not too hot and ready to start burning your plaque.

Burn outlines first then shade the stencil to match the picture. You can practice various techniques on your scrap wood, such as a line technique as used on the feathers in the picture above. I used the line technique to shade the feathers, drawing my pen from the shaft to the outer edge of the feather to create the effect of the feather hairs. When shading open areas you can use the line technique in a uniform pattern or a circle shading technique for lighter areas.

Once you have completed your picture you can go back over lines to darken them or use small bits of sandpaper to smooth rough lines or erase areas that you do not like and re-burn them. Use the light sand paper to remove any of the graphite lines or pencil lines that are still visible and smooth the surface. Remove any sawdust.

Prepare your clear coat as instructed and provide your work area with proper ventilation. You can use any brand of clear coat product you are familiar with or prefer. There are spray brands and brands you will need to apply with a brush. You will need to apply a few coats, you must make sure that each coat is dry and lightly sanded before applying the next and to follow the instructions specific to the clear coat you are using. I recommend a satin finish and not a high gloss. A high gloss will hide your fine lines and details in reflection making the picture seemed warped or unfinished. A very light sanding is recommended once the last coat is completely dry.

A super easy #handmade gift has just been created for your special someone. You can choose to add a picture hanging bracket on the back of the plaque or use a display stand. Do not wrap your gift until you are sure the clear coat is permanent and completely dry.

This Memory Box of Alex was made of a Pinewood Box, small. It has two compartments inside with black felt lining. Portraits on wood, gives us special gifts for friends and family using wood burning art.

The love of pyrography is a fun and exciting art, something like painting with fire. Although we have modernized our techniques significantly, it still brings a bit of power to ones center when creating, using a natural element. Not only is it fun but very rewarding. When making portraits on wood it seems as an artist that I become one with the piece. I have done several portrait pieces, some even in duplicate, and each piece is rewarding as you study your subject and bring their image to life from a piece of wood using fire and heat.
It takes an amazing amount of patience to burn your image, unlike drawing or painting where you are transferring your medium directly, in wood burning art, you are drawing the image out of the wood it seems. As you burn the surface, darkening the wood, the wood gives - through grain and texture to produce a beautiful portrait on wood. Even when duplicating a piece which I love to do, each piece is very different and as unique as the wood itself. When using the technique of pyrography you are applying heat, and as the wood burns you move along slowly creating lines, shadows and textures. You can use different tips, and heat ranges to adjust to the differences in wood to create your piece. This can be time consuming, depending on the types of wood and tools used to achieve the desired effects..
Portraits on wood offer a special challenge as well, it can seem that you are not only duplicating a persons image but you also want to capture their personality. Shadow and texture building in wood burning art is key to building that image and creating the personality behind the image. Adding background effects can enhance an image as well as add a bit to the piece and the portraits uniqueness.
Gifts made from wood burning art, can be very special, and enhance a design or home decor style. They can be rugged in style, made from found wood, or processed wood. The bark can be intact for a natural effect, or you can use pieces that have been rounded, squared and smoothed and varying in shape and size. Many like a stained frame on wood surfaces, as well as the bark frame.
I have done several portraits of families, children, grandchildren, parents, pets, people on motorcycles, deer hunter portraits with their kills and even portraits of those who have passed on. In each one, these portraits on wood, were special and unique to those who had commissioned my work, and those receiving the items as gifts. I have seen my portraits bring tears and smiles to those who have chosen to honor my skill and work.

Geronimo, Pyrography on Wood

Native American Art, and pyrography on wood can be a beautiful combination. The Knothole is featuring its first in a series of 4, of Great American Indian Chiefs. Highlighting the Native American Era, and its rich history is Geronimo, the first in the artists Great Chiefs Series. Geronimo is featured on a basswood plaque with bark. Using the art of pyrography the famous image of Geronimo kneeling with rifle in 1887 is burned into the wooden plaque.

A serene portrait of an American legend and great warrior, Geronimo was a leader of the Chiricahua Apache Indian tribe in times of war against the white settlers and against Mexico, fiercely protecting his people and land. He was known among the white settlers as "The worst Indian who ever lived", because of his ruthlessness in battle and the ability to escape each capture. One of his more famous escapes is known today and you can visit Geronimo's Cave in New Mexico where his magickal escape occurred.

This basswood plaque is approximately 8" x 9" inches and is finished with the bark intact. An acrylic clear is used to fix the surface of the pyrogrpahy wood art, and secures bark to keep from flaking. The clear is a satin smooth finish, and highlights the pyrographic detail of the piece with a low gloss appearance.

Pyrography on Wood - Harley Eagle Logo

Pyrography is the art of burning, and several materials can be used. I prefer wood, and Basswood has been my chosen medium lately. Here you can see a Basswood plaque, featuring a Harley Davidson Eagle Logo. The wood piece, is made to hang diagonally. Using this plaque was easy and minimal preparation was needed. I sanded the piece with a light grit sandpaper, and the edges. Then with a paint brush I removed the sawdust, wiped with a damp towel and drew the eagle. I then painted the edges black, and applied a light orange wash to the face of the wood, but not over the eagle. A few hours to dry and I was ready to burn. This Eagle probably in total prep took 3 to 4 hours. After burning I used colored pencil to high-light the color areas of the piece. Then using an acrylic clear, smooth satin finish grade, I coated the piece 3 separate times with a light sand between the first 2. This piece is an original by the artist using the Harley Logo, and will not be duplicated for sale. This one piece is available now at Ebay.....so bid now before it's too late!

If you like the piece it can be customized to your preference using different types of wood plaques, boxes or plates. This piece would make a lovely wall decoration and can be made into a candle holder or a coat hook could also be attached. A lovely coat rack of 4 to 6 plaques assembled on the wall, with the same logo, varying logos, or even logos with other pictures completing a Harley theme can be commissioned. Each piece will be unique and made for each customer only to their specifications.

Festive Holiday Treats

Spice up the Holidays with Festive Treats
For the usual Holiday feast there are several spins we can add to our festive menus to create healthy and warming dishes. Also preparing healthy and light snacks and salads to compliment our meals or snacks will help keep the "Holiday Bulge" to a minimum.

Festive Guacamole Dip is a wonderful and pretty addition of a bright green and tasty enjoyment. Avocados are packed with wonderful nutrients and healthy fats that are wonderful for skin and health. Your family and guests will never know what a health packed punch you have added to the party. All they will know is how great it tastes!

Festive Guacamole Dip

Prep time: 20 min.

Refrigerate for 1 to 2 hours before serving

Use within 2 days (Avocados will begin to brown, causing your dip to look rather drab. It is best to serve this dip the same day)
You will need a mixing bowl, cutting board, scissors, knife, spoon, and food processor.

Oils and lime juice are drizzled over avocados and green onions and herbs to help process these easily. Use lime juice sparingly until you create the taste desired. You can use regular oil such as soybean or olive but the prepared submarine oil with herbs and vinegar really give this dip the secret kick your friends will be raving about.

Wash all vegetables thoroughly

3 Avocados
1 to 2 vine ripe tomatoes(depending on size, 1 medium is best)
3 to 5 green onions
1 cup cut cilantro
1/2 yellow bell pepper
1/2 tsp salt
lime juice
submarine oil(found in the deli isle at your local grocer or market)
jalapeno optional (recommend pickled jalapeno slices)

Start with preparing avocados, cut in half and remove pitts. Scoop avocado from skin and place in processor. Drizzle a little of the oil over avocados to help aid in consistency for processing. Remove from processor. Cut green onions with scissors, about inch long chunks into the processor. Cut cilantro with scissors into your cup, crush down a bit to get a good cup. Add cilantro to onions, drizzle with oils and process. Make sure your pieces are processed well, and add to avocado. Next core and quarter your tomato and bell pepper. Place in processor, here you can add your jalapeno also. I like to use hot pickled jalapeno slices and I add approximately 3 to 5 slices. Drizzle with a light amount of lime juice. Once these are processed add to avocado mixture and stir. Add salt and more herbed oil and lime juice to taste. Stir well, and you can mash any avocado chunks easily with a fork.

Refrigerate for at least 1 to 2 hours before serving. This let the herbs and vegetable infuse the mixture.

You can serve the dip alone, as a garnish or as a salad pictured above. This is a great and easy recipe. The refreshing guacamole dip is very versatile and the recipe is easy to prepare and alter to your preferred tastes.

Hello Everyone!!

Are we full of Holiday Cheer yet?

Well hopefully for some of we have began shopping for the holidayas Christmas is right around the corner:) I got the store up and running just in time to take christmas orders, so you'll have to check it out!

I can't wait for Black Friday, as I have never been brave enough to go but my Girlfriend Amy talke me into going this year with her and her sister......so wish me luck and I hope I don't get into any fights...lol. I think I'm past that by now...but you never know:)

Well in closing hope this finds all of you well, and spread some cheer this Holiday as we all have a lot to be thankful for!!
