I am the first to confess, I know nothing about ladies skin care, makeup and cosmetics! Nevertheless, when thrown this challenge, I thought it would be another nifty idea to learn something new, as I love to consistently evolve in keeping with the times. So I agreed, and they sent me two things, a pdf catalogue (which had very little text and the pictures were pretty low res) with a one page text file (word file that had only 300 words) all the way via my dropbox from Singapore. They rest they said, was up to my imagination …. but little did they know, I could be extremely flighty and nonsensical when it comes to my imagination …….. You can view their website here.

Some excuses I have heard before,

• We’re too small, we can’t afford it.
• I just need something that works.
• I love having a webmail with easy access worldwide.
• It connects easily to my smartphone.
• We have no clue as how to create our own email address.

Well, I got news for you guys, all the above is easily configured with/without your own email or web server! People can spend a couple of hundred on company formation, office furniture and even take our classified ads to recruit staff, but you can’t afford a little more for your own domain and email server? It does not make sense. Ok, even if you are really on a meagre budget, and your company is really small, you can still register a domain and use Google Standard Apps, which offers free email service using your very own domain instead of a gmail extension. Sure, you will need to do additional settings, but it’s not rocket science. Just make sure that your domain registrar gives you access to DNS Management.

Surprisingly, I get funny looks from head to toe, when I introduce my company as The Lab Ratz [I couldn't be bothered cause it was intentional]. In fact, I know a lot of people who refuse to get on board the internet, even though it is now been the norm for a couple of years. It’s good to have confidence in your own company, but I feel it’s prudent to have a vision of the future. I don’t deny that you may be a successful entrepreneur, currently, with a few companies at the back of your hand but trouble starts when you begin your expansion plans, so please be weary the next time you pass out your business card to someone else using your usual @gmail / @yahoo / @hotmail, as they may not be impressed. I don’t think you need me to remind you how important branding is ….

In 2011, I got a call from Pretty In White, who now wanted to focus on images and pictorials, partly inspired by their photography partner Jenny Sun. It is with that in mind, I opted for a full screen website with plenty of options for pictures. I was a little worried about loading times, but with a few tweaks, it worked pretty well. View the full site here.

One of the main points when formulating a website is sufficient information. So when I was approached by a printer to formulate their website, I was very surprised to find that they were more concerned with the present, and not looking at the long term. They did have loads of printed materials, but since I could not use most of it (due to lack of consent from their clients), I opted for a one page website that showcased their general services.
