There’s no better way to view 4th of July fireworks than from the deck of your boat. The view is great, the show is reflected on the water, and you’re boating. Here are four tips for enjoying fireworks by boat in 2013.

1. Make sure your running and anchor lights are working properly, and that you have all the required safety equipment aboard.

2. Get to your anchorage early, downwind of the show, if possible. Anchored upwind, you may not be able to hear the full sonic power of the fireworks.

3. Don’t let the kids or landlubbers play with flashlights, and don’t use your spotlight to “see if that’s Billy’s boat over there.” Doing so can ruin night vision.

4. Take your time leaving the event. Let all the revelers get going before weighing anchor.

Find fireworks across the country to view by boat here.

Here are some tips that will make your day on the water safe and enjoyable for all the pet participants.

PFD’S (Personal Flotation Device). If your dog falls overboard, will he/she be able to avoid exhaustion or hypothermia before they can be retrieved? Believe it or not, PFD’s are made just for dogs and may be purchased all the major marine vendors. Make sure the PFD fits securely and allow your dog to practice swimming while wearing it. If your dog has never worn a PFD they may be resistant to it at first. Give them time to get acquainted with it before actually getting on the boat.

FRESH DRINKING WATER. Always have enough fresh drinking water available for your dog. Canines lose fair amounts of body fluid when they pant, so be sure to keep them hydrated. While moving and bouncing boats may not be the most practical place for a dog bowl, an alternative it to allow your dog to drink out of a sports bottle, which are less messy and you can squirt water right into their mouth.

SUN AND HEAT. Excessive sun exposure can cause heat problems for animals. Just as with humans, they include sun stroke, heat cramps, and heat exhaustion. Providing a shaded are for your pet is a good idea. Again, give them plenty of water. Let them take a dip in the water to cool them down if necessary. Boat surfaces, such as fiberglass, can get extremely hot in the sun. Dogs absorb heat through the pads on their feet so be sure to protect them.

RELIEVING THEIR BLADDER. If your boat surface allows, try to train your dog to go to the bathroom in a specific spot. This eliminates stepping in surprises and you can easily wipe it clean. Obviously, if your boat flooring is carpet the first suggestion isn’t ideal. If this is the case, be sure to allow your dog to go ashore so they can do their business.

THE INEXPERIENCED BOATING DOG. If you’ve never brought your dog out on a boat, don’t assume they will enjoy boating. They often prefer still and stable surfaces. A day or so before you plan on taking your dog boating, allow them to get acquainted with the boat while it is still on the trailer or at dock. This is also a good time to let them wear their PFD for the first time. Your next step is to crank the engine since it may be an unfamiliar sound to your dog.

Make your first outing on the water a short one just to allow your pet to get acclimated to boat movement. Humans get seasick so there is no reason to think your pet will not do the same.

Getting in and out of a kayak is probably what most beginners fear the most. It can be awkward and challenging but here’s how to do it with ease. The key is keeping your weight low and centered.

At the dock -

Untie the kayak and keep the line in your hand.

In shallow water you can lift your paddle vertically – set one end into the bottom of the water snug against the kayak side steady it. If you’re in deeper water lay your paddle within reach and you’ll use the dock edge to steady you.

Sit on the dock edge dangling your legs over and balance the cockpit edge with your feet to line up your entry position – drop the tie line into the cockpit.

Using the dock edge to steady you, swing one foot then quickly the other into the center of the cockpit – quickly crouch down – then sit.

Take your paddle in your hand, rest it across the cockpit and adjust the tie line so it won’t drag when you paddle.

Upon return, exiting is basically the same in reverse

See a video of dock entry tips

At the water’s edge -

Place your paddle shaft behind (or in front) of the cockpit opening, across the deck

Holding the paddle shaft in place, gently lean on one side to let that paddle blade rest on the ground – this will keep the kayak from wobbling

Using the paddle shaft to steady you – quickly enter the center of the cockpit – crouch – then sit

Then use your paddle to give you a shove off

Again, getting out is the same in reverse.

TIP: In shallow water, you can lift your paddle vertically, (as described above) setting one end on solid ground snug against the kayak side to steady it. Keeping your weight in the center – use the paddle shaft as a “crutch” to enter and exit.

It can be confusing making sense of the many “best places to retire” lists out there. In fact, it’s probably best to eye these lists with extreme skepticism.

The way these lists are graded often misses the point: They don’t tell you much about what your life would be like if you lived there, because there’s just too much about your life they can’t possibly know or take into consideration. Plus, a lot of what’s desirable is completely subjective. One person’s tranquil small town might make another go stir-crazy, while someone from Texas might shiver just at the thought of moving to Maine.

“What we really want people to think about is, how is their home designed? Is their community going to be able to support them?” says Amy Levner, manager of livable communities at AARP.

A number of factors should be considered: Community, Taxes, Cost of living, Healthcare, Public transportation, & Social networks. For details on each one of these, see the full article here.

To figure out if a community will be a good fit for you, consider talking to the locals. Older folks in particular who already live in the place you’re thinking about moving to can be a great resource. Depending on your hobbies and interests, reach out to a local church, synagogue, activity, or business-focused group you might like to be a part of and press current members for honest assessments of the area. Check local media websites and see if there are groups or events where newcomers can forge new social connections.

As it turns out, nearly 90% of us stay put after retirement. And for the ones who do move, the most common reason is to be closer to their grandkids and family. So go ahead and look at those lists if you want to see how where you’re living stacks up, but don’t stress out about finding the “perfect” retirement community. You might already be living there.

There’s nothing worse that diving off your dock and emerging from the lake looking like Sigmund the Sea Monster (I’m dating myself). Here’s a simple but effective solution to control aquatic vegetation for your lakeshore.

The WeedShear Pond and Lake Weed Cutter! A unique design with 49″ wide razor blade edges for cutting the ALL aquatic vegetation.

The Lake and Pond Weed Shear has a uniquely designed shape that allows you to throw it from the dock, shore or boat, let it sink to the bottom and retrieve it back with the 30′ rope. The handle comes in 3 pieces totaling 9′. It comes with a hand sharpener to keep the tool effective. $144.99 (Shipping costs range $10-$20 U.S. $25 Canada).

Remember, most invasive aquatic weeds spread by fragmentation. Small loose fragments of the plant will sink to the bottom and re-root. So be sure to RAKE ALL WEED FRAGMENTS from your shoreline…or your problem will only get worse!

Get the most out of your lakefront Property! You can learn more, watch videos and order the product from Weeder’sDigest.com.
