Duncan Rawlinson shot this photograph across Toronto’s Inner Harbour toward Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. A rippled sheet of altocumulus fills most of the frame, its rows of gray and blue-green cloud running all the way to the far shore. Beneath it, the island airport sits in a thin band: Air Canada Express turboprops at the terminal, the ferry at its dock, and hangars and service buildings along the runway apron. A single departing plane hangs in the upper left and gives the cloud sheet its scale. The water below picks up the same gray-green as the sky. It is an ordinary working corner of the harbour under a very unusual ceiling. Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this aerial view over the 1000 Islands region of Ontario, Canada. The image records the first snow of the year settling on mixed forest and open ground along a winding river. Rendered in black and white, the frame emphasizes the textural contrast between snow-dusted trees, bare riverside vegetation, and the smooth dark water cutting through the wooded terrain. Low cloud cover diffuses the light, creating even tones across the frame. The composition follows the river’s curve from foreground to distant shoreline, where a small community is visible. This photograph captures an early winter moment as the season arrives in eastern Ontario.

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this winter scene in the 1000 Islands region of Ontario, Canada. A single bare tree occupies a snow-covered field, its dark branches reaching upward against a pale, overcast sky. Behind it, a dense line of evergreens and leafless deciduous trees marks the edge of the field. The muted tones of gray, white, and soft blue define the cold afternoon. The composition centers on the solitary tree, emphasizing its isolation in the empty field. This photograph captures the spare beauty of rural Ontario in winter.

Beyond the bridge, ice covers the river in a pale sheet that runs toward the moonlit channel. Snow lines both shores and the cottage lights of Ivy Lea glint through the trees at left. The sky grades from the last warmth of sunset at the edges to deep blue overhead. Ivy Lea, Ontario, Canada.

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this winter scene in the Thousand Islands region of Ontario, Canada. A tall pine anchors the right foreground, its weathered trunk and rust-colored needles framing the view across calm water. Two small islands sit in the middle distance, each crowned with evergreens and a single red boathouse that contrasts with the snow-dusted ground. The water reflects the muted gray sky and the dark forms of the islands, creating a mirror-like surface broken only by faint ripples. Bare deciduous trees and snow-covered shorelines recede into the misty background, while a small sapling with copper leaves adds a warm accent to the lower center. The overcast light softens contrasts across the composition. The photograph captures the off-season in this archipelago, where boathouses and cottages rest dormant among the islands.

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this view at Curecanti National Recreation Area in Colorado. The Dillon Pinnacles rise sharply above the calm waters of Blue Mesa Reservoir, their deeply eroded volcanic spires catching afternoon light. Sparse vegetation clings to the rolling slopes below the formations, while the blue water reflects the clear sky. The wide composition captures the scale of the geology and the still reservoir. This scene documents the distinctive terrain of western Colorado, where ancient volcanic rock meets the state’s largest body of water.

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this tour vessel operating in the 1000 Islands region of Ontario, Canada. The white hull of the Thousand Islander IV displays the Gananoque Boat Line branding as it moves through calm water. Passengers fill the open upper deck and enclosed cabin below, while Canadian flags fly from the stern and bow. The forested shoreline of the archipelago forms a green backdrop under a partly cloudy sky. The boat’s wake spreads across the river’s surface, documenting a typical sightseeing cruise through this popular freshwater destination. The image records both the vessel’s design and its role in regional tourism along the St. Lawrence River.

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this aerial view over the Thousand Islands region of Ontario, Canada. A lone boat traces a clean wake across calm water, its path rippling outward in parallel lines that draw the eye through the frame. Small forested islands anchor the left side of the composition, their bare branches and dusted shorelines marking the early cold. The monochrome treatment emphasizes the tonal contrast between smooth water and textured landforms, while the distant archipelago fades into soft gray. The scene captures a late-autumn day on the St. Lawrence River.

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this small island in the 1000 Islands region of Ontario, Canada, on a misty autumn morning. A single deciduous tree displays warm orange and yellow foliage against the cool green backdrop of evergreens, while dense fog drifts across the water and obscures the surrounding forest. The mist isolates the island from its surroundings. The composition balances the warm tones of fall against the muted grays and greens of the fog-covered shoreline. This photograph captures the seasonal transition and the atmospheric conditions that define autumn mornings along the St. Lawrence River.

The monochrome treatment emphasizes the tonal contrast between dark earth, bright cloud breaks, and the textured middle gray of the distant forest. The panoramic format captures the scale of the rural scene and the weight of the approaching weather. Shot in Ontario, Canada, this image documents a moment of atmospheric tension over agricultural land.

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this aerial view of a private island home in the Thousand Islands, Ontario, Canada. The small forested island sits surrounded by clear river water, with a single residence visible among the dense green canopy. Rocky shoals and smaller islets dot the shallow water nearby, their submerged contours visible through the transparent surface. The overhead perspective reveals the compact scale of the property and its relationship to the surrounding archipelago. The blue-green water transitions from pale turquoise over the shoals to deeper tones in the open channel, characteristic of the St. Lawrence River system in this region. The composition captures the secluded character of island living in this distinctive freshwater archipelago.

White snow covers most of the island, contrasting with exposed rock and vegetation at the edges, while dark water surrounds the landmass. The overhead perspective shows the irregular shape of the snow cover and submerged rock formations visible through the clear water. Bare shrubs rise through the snow surface. White, gray, brown, and green tones define this late-winter scene in the freshwater archipelago.

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this cornfield from above, revealing the precise diagonal rows that define modern row-crop agriculture. The green plants form a repeating pattern across the frame, with subtle variations in tone marking the spacing between each planted line. Shot from a drone perspective, the image reduces the field to its essential geometry—parallel furrows that curve gently across the terrain. The even light brings out the texture of the crop canopy without strong shadows. This is a document of agricultural land use and the visual order imposed by planting machinery.

Shot by Duncan Rawlinson. Duncan Radwlinson photographed this black-and-white aerial view of the 1000 Islands region in Ontario, Canada. Dark water winds between snow-covered shores and small wooded islands, their conifers heavy with fresh accumulation. The monochrome rendering strips away color, leaving only frozen land, open channel, and winter-clad trees. Ice clings to the edges of the waterway while the center remains unfrozen, creating a natural corridor through the archipelago. The high vantage reveals the geographic structure, where narrow passages separate forested islets blanketed in white. Overcast light eliminates harsh shadows, producing even tones across the scene.
