Duncan Rawlinson photographed this multi-level parking structure, documenting the stacked infrastructure of urban vehicle processing. Bright yellow and orange toll kiosks stand against gray concrete barriers and glass elevator enclosures, forming a study in industrial color contrast. HVAC units and ventilation equipment occupy the rooftop plane, while metal conduit and structural columns define the middle ground. The composition reveals the overlapping geometry of utilitarian architecture, where payment systems, climate control, and vertical circulation compress into a single frame. Concrete surfaces show weathering and use, grounding the technical apparatus in the everyday wear of city life.

Duncan Rawlinson photographed Bonnie View Island from the water, with the Canadian span of the Thousand Islands Bridge rising above the tree line. The private cottage sits among pines and hardwoods on the rocky shoreline of the St. Lawrence River, its multi-level deck and boathouse facing open water. The green steel towers and suspension cables of the international bridge cut across a clear blue sky. Flags mark the residence, and the scene illustrates the blend of residential island architecture and cross-border infrastructure typical of the 1000 Islands region of Ontario.

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this working waterfront at Rockport, Ontario, where Andress Boat Works operates as both a gas dock and ice cream shop. The pale blue building with white trim sits directly on the water, its green-and-white striped awning sheltering the entrance. A Canadian flag flies from the roof while boaters and visitors move across the wooden docks where rental boats and small craft are moored. Trees in full summer leaf rise behind the structure, framing the scene against an overcast sky. The photograph documents the blend of marine service and casual commerce typical of rural Ontario lake communities, where a single business anchors both practical boating needs and leisure.

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this lakeside service building at Andress Boat Works in Rockport, Ontario, surrounded by mature shade trees. The white structure with its dark roof sits at the water’s edge, serving as both a gas dock and ice cream shop for boaters and visitors. A yellow umbrella marks the outdoor seating area on the wooden deck, while a pontoon boat drifts in the calm water beyond. Dappled sunlight filters through the canopy, casting soft shadows across the mown grass sloping toward the shore. The far shore stretches low and wooded beneath a partly cloudy sky. This view shows a functional piece of small-town waterfront infrastructure, the kind of unpretentious stop where people fuel up and take a break between rides on the lake.

Bare trees stand along the shoreline, their tan branches contrasting with the white ground cover. Grays, whites, and soft blues dominate the cold-weather scene.
Duncan Rawlinson photographed this panoramic view during the May 2024 geomagnetic storm, when auroras became visible across much of Ontario. Green and pink curtains of light arc across the night sky above a calm lake, their colors reflected in the still water below. A wooden dock extends into the frame from the left, anchoring the composition, while distant shoreline lights mark the far bank. Stars fill the gaps between the shifting bands of color. The photograph records a rare intensity of aurora borealis at mid-latitudes, a brief atmospheric event that drew observers across the province to their nearest dark-sky vantage points.

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this scene in Toronto, Ontario, capturing the abstract patterns formed by snow accumulation along dark channels. The monochrome treatment emphasizes the contrast between the textured white drifts and the smooth dark surfaces beneath. Curves and irregular shapes fill the frame, creating a composition that suggests natural flow frozen in time. The overhead perspective flattens the space, allowing shadows to define each contour. Fine granular detail along the edges of the snow adds tactile interest to the otherwise minimal scene. This photograph transforms a simple winter surface into a study of form, tone, and texture.

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this view of a bare tree silhouetted against a deep teal sky streaked with the northern lights. A faint arc of aurora borealis sweeps diagonally across the upper right, contrasting with the scattered starfield. The tree’s branches catch warm light, standing out against the cool atmospheric tones. The photograph balances natural detail in the foreground with the movement of the aurora overhead. This image captures the intersection of terrestrial form and auroral display, recorded during a geomagnetic event in May 2024. The composition emphasizes the scale and clarity of the night sky while grounding the scene in the texture of the leafless canopy.

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this winter forest scene in the 1000 Islands region of Ontario, Canada. Fresh snow blankets the ground and clings to every branch, creating a high-contrast monochrome composition. Dark tree trunks rise from a floor of snow-covered rocks and fallen timber, their bark standing out against the white coating. The mix of deciduous and conifer branches forms overlapping depths that recede into soft focus. Muted gray tones dominate, punctuated by the deep blacks of exposed bark and stone. The frame captures the still density of a northeastern hardwood forest after a heavy snowfall, with no trails or structures visible.

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this lake freighter navigating the St. Lawrence River near Alexandria Bay, New York. The massive self-unloader CSL Laurentien dominates the frame, its rust-red hull and white superstructure rising above the water as a small inflatable boat crosses in the foreground. Spray kicks from the bow where the vessel meets the current. Warm evening light falls across the scene, softening the industrial lines of the ship and the wooded shoreline behind. The size differential between the commercial carrier and the recreational craft underscores the working character of this busy waterway. Muted tones and haze give the photograph a documentary quality.

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this view of the Thousand Islands Bridge spanning the St. Lawrence River between Ontario and New York. The long exposure technique smooths the water into a glassy plane that mirrors the bridge’s illuminated cables and towers. Soft overcast light blankets the scene as dusk settles over the wooded islands. The green suspension towers anchor the composition while their reflections trace vertical lines across the calm surface. Rocky shoreline in the foreground provides scale and texture against the engineered span. This photograph captures a still moment of infrastructure and nature coexisting in the 1000 Islands region of eastern Ontario.

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this aerial view of a small island surrounded by ice and open water in the 1000 Islands region of Ontario, Canada. The wooded outcrop holds a mix of conifers and bare deciduous trees, their browns and greens contrasting against the white ice and deep blue of the unfrozen channel. Waterfowl gather along the rocky shoreline and drift across the water, taking advantage of the open passage. Snow blankets the frozen sections, and the elevated perspective reveals the shapes carved by ice and current. The scene documents the transition zone where winter’s grip meets flowing water, a characteristic feature of the St. Lawrence River system.

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this stone castle from above in the 1000 Islands region of Ontario, Canada. The structure features red clay tile roofs, multiple turrets, and walls built from locally quarried stone. Mature trees frame the building on three sides, while open lawn and the St. Lawrence River stretch beyond. The elevated perspective reveals the castle’s footprint, its courtyard entry, and the relationship between the historic masonry and the natural shoreline setting. Afternoon light picks out texture in the stonework and defines the geometry of the rooflines against the water.

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this aerial view of Pike Island in the 1000 Islands region of Ontario, Canada. The small island sits locked in winter ice, its snow-covered shoreline traced by dark open water along the edges. A modest cottage and several outbuildings occupy the center, surrounded by bare deciduous trees that cast long shadows across the white ground. The frozen river extends in all directions, its surface textured by wind and varying ice thickness. Whites, grays, and pale blues dominate the cold-weather scene, while the island’s isolation becomes more pronounced in the quiet of the frozen river.

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this small island near Tar Island in the 1000 Islands region of Ontario, Canada during October 2025. The aerial view reveals a rocky granite outcrop crowned with trees displaying fall colors—bright chartreuse and rust tones against the deep blue water of the St. Lawrence River. Aquatic vegetation floats in a dense patch near the island’s base, while a second smaller island sits in the distance. Late afternoon light brings out the texture in the exposed rock and the rippled water surface. This documents seasonal transition in the freshwater archipelago of eastern Ontario.

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this winter scene in the 1000 Islands region of Ontario, Canada. Fresh snow traces the curved branches of a small shrub in the foreground, while dried marsh reeds and grasses stretch across the middle ground in shades of tan and rust. The overcast December light softens the entire frame, blending white snow, brown vegetation, and distant bare trees into a study of seasonal change. The composition leads from the sculptural foreground branches through the textured field to the tree line beyond. This photograph captures the understated character of a cold day in this rural marsh setting, where winter has just begun to settle over the area.

The monochrome image presents a church facade where icicles hang from the roofline above a pointed arch window. Snow blankets the dark roof and clings to bare tree branches visible at the top of the frame. The horizontal lap siding creates a repeating pattern across the white wall, punctuated by the vertical thrust of the Gothic window. The composition contrasts the architectural geometry with accumulated winter ice and snow.

Duncan Rawlinson created this abstract image using artificial intelligence to explore motion and color in floral forms. Red and white flowers appear to sweep diagonally across a soft gray-green backdrop, their petals stretched into streaks of coral, red, and cream. The motion effect transforms the flowers into bands of color that radiate from a darker cluster at the left, suggesting movement frozen mid-sweep. Green stems and foliage blur into horizontal lines that reinforce the directional pull. The muted background keeps attention on the flowers themselves, where the contrast of sharp and smeared edges creates a sense of speed. This AI-generated artwork balances recognizable floral elements with abstraction, offering a contemporary take on botanical subjects through digital techniques.

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this wide view over the Thousand Islands region of Ontario, Canada, in spring 2025. A dense layer of fog blankets the river, obscuring much of the water and leaving only the dark silhouettes of islands visible above the white. A ship moves slowly through the fog, its presence marked by the faint sound of its horn as it navigates the channels. The soft morning light reveals a blue-gray sky above, while the forested shores and scattered islands stretch across the frame. The composition emphasizes the scale and stillness of the region, with the fog adding depth and atmosphere to the scene.
